Welcome to the 2016 Herd Sire Edition of the News & Views.

Firstly I would like to thank the Board of Directors for electing me President of the Manitoba Limousin Association. Also thank you to everyone who attended the AGM on January 9, 2016 in Brandon. It was an informative meeting with an active discussion about the Board’s activities in 2015.

The 2015 livestock production year ended on an abrupt down turn after record prices in the last quarter of 2014 and first ¾ of 2015. This comes after the industry was led to believe this upturn was to last for 3-4 years. So much for the expert’s wisdom and advice, maybe we should listen to the people who have more ‘skin’ and ‘money’ in the production of livestock. With this reality check more moderate returns for producers will be the norm. This will mean that production practises will pay more attention to detail and the type of cattle produced will more closely scrutinized. This should turn out well for Limousin as they produce more lean meat yield and are more feed efficient than most other breeds of beef cattle. This will still require more selection pressure to produce the right kind of seed stock for tomorrow’s demands. To advance the Limousin breed will require more data collection to prove we are superior in these important economic traits.

I challenge all producers, commercial and purebred; to gather more information about the product they are selling.

Commercial producers should find out where their calves went when they were sold, what feedlot bought them and finally, did they go east or west or south. Did that feedlot make money with them, and if not, why. Purebred producers need to find out from their customers if their purchases were successful and if not, why. The new CLA tagging program will be a great benefit to help identify Limousin sired calves. Let’s make sure they are all worthy of being called a Limo.

Another program that will be a great benefit to producers is the BIXS program. With a little effort you will be able to track your cattle’s performance right through to harvest. You will be surprised how your Limo’s will stack up against the industry averages. This could be your marketing advantage.

Manitoba will have a busy year again in 2016. There will be private treaty bull sales as well as Douglas Bull Test Sale on April 2, 2016. We will be having our annual Summer Show once more. Watch for details. This fall we will be hosting the National Show & Sale at Ag-Ex in Brandon. We may not have the largest number of cattle at the National but we can guarantee you the best facilities and greatest accommodations in Canada with the Keystone Centre in Brandon. Previous Nationals have also proved that you can have a pretty good time in Brandon as well! Watch for more details, we will keep you posted.

Good luck with calving in ’16 and hopefully I will catch you down the road sometime soon. If you have concerns please give me call. I love to talk cows and the livestock industry.

Congratulations, Maplehurst Farms Maplehurst Farms has been in the family since 1888 and is currently operated by Ken, Bob and family. It consists of 800 acres of native pasture, 800 acres of grain and hay land and 300 acres of rented hay land.

Just like many other beef producers we tried several exotic breeds on our British based cow herd before we decided on Limousin. They even added some muscle to our Holstein cross calves. We were so impressed with the breed that we became lifetime members in the CLA in 1978.

Our herd consists of about 170 head of PB and commercial cows. The heifers are kept at home in the summer on rotationally grazed tame pasture and the cow herd spends the summer on native pasture. In October the calves are weaned and are backgrounded until spring before being sold. The cows are fed on pasture near the yard until mid-January before being brought into the yard to calve.

In the past bulls have been marketed off the farm and through Bull Test Stations at Gunton and Douglas. Females have been sold through the Treasure Chest Sale and the Manitoba Limousin Advantage Sale.

Over the years the kids have shown several Grand and Reserve Grand Champion steers in 4-H and many Grand and Reserve Carcases in the Portage Interclub. All steers shown are home grown.

Since the dairy herd was sold in 2013, there is more time to attend shows in the summer and Manitoba Ag Ex in the fall.

Ken and Bob have both spent time as directors on the MLA Board. Bob and Tim are presently directors.

He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren.

Mike lived doing what he dreamed of and loved farming. In 1967, he bought his homestead where Faye and him still resided.

In 1968, he married his love of his life, Faye and started a family. He took great pride in teaching his children and grandchildren about the land and raising livestock.

Mike believed in hard work and family were what life was made for. He did both of these with all his heart.
