Happy New Years!!! It has been a cold winter and it was super cold at the AGM. I would like to thank everyone who attended the meeting. Thank you to Anne BurnetBurgess for making the trip down, Brad Hockridge for agreeing to become our newest board member and for everyone else who agreed to stay on the board. We still have a position open for anyone interested. Congratulations to Poplar Stock Farms for being awarded with the Limousin Ambassador Award. Some of the highlights of the AGM consisted of Jaymarandy being presented with the Elite Dam Award, Anne gave an overview of what and where the breed is and is going. We are opening more classes at the MLE if anyone is interested in finding out more can talk to Mark Angus. A couple of board members will be attending Beef Seminars in early January. And we have set a sale date for the fall. Calving season is in full swing for some producers and I wish them the best of luck. And a speedy recovery for Lawrence Daniel. Till we meet again…. Jay-Dean

Oppor tunity is k nock ing! Limousin is #1 for yield and feed efficienc y, they have the ability to add yield without tak ing away marbling, easy calving, color compatible to all breeds. These traits will help make uniform pack ages of calves no matter what your cow herd dynamics are. Manitoba Limousin Breeders have worked hard building on these strengths as well as improved scrotal measurements and disposition in their cattle. Well muscled cattle are exac tly what the consumer is demanding and this is the force be hind what feedlot, pack ing plant and retail buyers are look ing for. Did your previous calf crop meet the grade? Whether you feed your calves out yourself or want to market them to someone else they will need to be able to develop into thick , high yielding carcasses. That doesn’t magically happen with just feed, they need a good genetic base to give them the oppor tunity to per form efficiently and be what the market demands. Give your herd the oppor tunity to move you ahead. Add Efficient, well muscled Limousin bulls to your bull power. Limousin is the Carcass Breed. A new era of information technology and new risk insurance programs will put us on a level playing field across western Canada. Consumers are becoming more educated on their pro tein choices. Limousin genetics provide cattle producers the advantage over other ‘meat ’ to be raised environmentally sustainable and ‘additive’ free. I t ’s the right choice, make it yours!

Nomination Report
Welcome to Brad Hockridge to the Manitoba Limousin Association Board of Directors. Brad and his family own and operate Hockridge Farms. They are a third and fourth generation cattle farm with over 25 years in the Limousin business. Their first involvement with this cattle breed was with the purchase of a bull to cross with their mainly Hereford cow herd. They were so impressed with the breed that they made the decision to get more involved and in 1982/83 became members of the Canadian Limousin Association and the Manitoba Limousin Association. Through purchasing Limousin bred cows and through Artificial insemination they improved their genetics and increased their size to over 100 registered cows and up to 600 commercial cows. Their herd is both red and black in color and mainly polled. They sell yearling and two year old bulls and bred heifers off the farm. Calves are sold through the local auction mart but also sold through internet sales. Cattle are raised on pasture, hay and silage including corn, barley, alfalfa and fall rye in the winter months. The herd is on a mineral program and are on a complete herd health program and hormone free. Sample of the bull offering at Hockridge Farms.

Feeding Cattle in Cold Weather When Environment Canada issues a Wind Chill Warning most of us would prefer to hide in our warm houses and not venture outside. Of course, most of us don’t really have a choice in the matter but we can at least dress for the weather. We’ve evolved to use our brain to adapt to unsavoury conditions; other animals have evolved to adapt as well but it doesn’t involve several pounds of goose down and twenty layers of synthetic fibers. Beef cattle, for instance, are relatively unchanged from their wild ancestors in their ability to tolerate cold conditions however even these animals need help to survive severe cold. Like other endotherms (a.k.a. “warm bloods”), cattle use their metabolism to regulate their body temperature. As such there is a range of temperatures, Thermal Neutral Zone, in which they are able to regulate their body temperature without expending very much energy to do so. The low end of the TNZ is bordered by a Lower Critical Temperature (LCT), which changes depending on the condition of the animal’s coat (Table 1). Cattle that encounter temperatures below their LCT will begin to use energy in an effort to stay warm. These animals will eat more feed because digestion creates heat, but they will be using that extra energy to stay warm. Cattle are just as affected by wind as we are, and this must be considered when assessing cold stress (effective temperature, Table 2). Cattle have evolve to acclimatize to winter by growing thicker coats, increasing their metabolic rate and increasing feed intake by up to 30%. This acclimatization occurs when temperatures consistently fall below the LCT and lasts all winter regardless of temperature changes. This adaptation increases the challenge of feeding beef because the higher feed intake results in higher rates of passage, meaning that the digestibility of the consumed feed decreases. So not only are they requiring more energy to stay warm and maintain body condition but they are getting less energy from the feed they are eating. Allen Rawluk, EMF Nutrition’s Beef Team Leader, states that, “ At -30 a mature cow will need : 5 lbs more grain, or 7 lbs quality hay, or 15 lbs of silage, over and above her regular ration, just to maintain her condition. At -40 a mature cow will need: 10 lbs more grain, or 15 lbs quality hay, or 30 lbs of silage, over and above her regular ration, just to maintain her condition.” Allen’s suggestions are to assess the cows with your hands, feel their condition, because a full coat can hide condition loss. When temperatures continue to plummet and as hay quality decreases over the winter, cattle can lose the ability to increase feed intake enough to meet their energy requirements Table 1. Lower Critical Temperature EMF Nutrition has several nutritional options to help cattle make it based on coat type Coat °C through the deep freeze. For more info on nutritional strategies to Summer coat or wet coat 15 counteract cold stress in beef, contact Allen Rawluk, 204-768-0313 or Fall coat 7 arawluk@emf-nutrition.com.
