PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE As I sit and write this report we have yet another standstill in harvest. The first half of 2016 started well with little snow and ideal seeding conditions, we were even worrying if there would be enough growth and grass for our pastures. Mid June came and it hasn’t stopped raining yet. Many areas in the province have received 150% of normal precipitation which is great for pastures but not so good for making hay. Anyway, there should be plentiful feed resources for the livestock industry this year. It has been a busy summer with 4-H achievements, summer fairs and junior activities. Hopefully you were able to attend some of these events to support or learn more about Limousin cattle. All facets of the industry have been busy as well with field days, demonstrations and meetings. At a recent Manitoba Beef & Forage Initiative Field Day, the Manitoba Minister of Agriculture stated that he wished for the number of Manitoba cattle to increase from 485,000 to 750,000. Which is a lofty challenge for the Manitoba Beef Industry. Let’s hope Limousin cattle can be a large component of this increase as the breed can offer increased yields and carcass cut ability, two areas that have been decreasing in the last decade. As fall approaches we start to think about livestock prices and trends. We have seen a marked downturn in the cattle futures and auction market returns this year. Many producers are going to be very disappointed with the

prices they receive for their calves this fall which is because feedlots have suffered heavy losses in the last half of 2015 and to date in 2016. Maybe if they had been feeding cattle that yielded and produced more meat they wouldn’t have incurred such heavy losses. JUST A THOUGHT!

With regards to the fall show and sale season, the Manitoba Limousin Association is proud and pleased to host the Canadian Limousin Association National Show and National Advantage Sale held in conjunction with the Manitoba AgEx Show. This national event will be held on October 28, 2016 with the show starting at 10:00 a.m. and the sale at 7:00 p.m. Be sure to attend this prestigious event as some of the finest Limousin cattle from Western Canada will be in Brandon at the Keystone Centre. Lauren and I were able to attend the International Limousin Congress in Ireland from August 20-27, 2016. What a beautiful country, there is green grass everywhere. Limousin have the largest numbers of beef cattle in Ireland and are the breed of choice for A.I. in the dairy herd. Although the Irish Limousin are different in size and stature than North American cattle, they are an impressive example of Limousin cattle. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Ireland with farm tours and county fairs with great experiences in Irish culture and hospitality. Even the Guinness was great! Bill Campbell President, MLA

Real Cattle – Real World – Real Results Opinions that Matter C attle Buyer: Last fall when we sold our calves, an experienced order buyer asked the manager where those calves came from.

He couldn’t believe the thickness, the docility and the hair coat of our group. When he sees the number of calves that he does, that’s a compliment.

B utCher: This summer, a butcher chose our 4-H steer on carcass potential and the fact that he had purchased a 4-H steer out of our program almost 30 years ago and it had been the best carcass he had ever seen. He spoke of both of these carcasses with absolute passion - taste fat, not waste fat. He is amazed with the tenderness of those steaks!

In the spring of 1972, B ob and Joyce were approached by John O wen of Calgar y to consider being an agent for his Livestock Insurance Company. This was the time of large numbers of cattle being impor ted from Europe and they needed to be insured by the Canadian owners while in quarantine. We accepted his offer and star ted Stockman’s Agencies and commenced insuring the impor t cattle mainly Simmental, Charolais, Limousin and Maine Anjou. This initiated the development of selling insurance across Manitoba star ting with Bar 5 Simmental sales with other larger sales including the Brandon Winter Fair bull sale of 350 plus bulls and the Manitoba Bull Test Stations with over 300 bulls. Today the trend has changed to mostly private sales for breeders of various breeds, consignment sales, private sales, 4-H B eef Clubs ,etc insuring mainly for mor talit y , transpor tation and loss of ser vice policies. D uring the mid 70’s, there was a great deal of interest in Llamas and Ostriches which added to our business along with a number of horses. We are licensed to sell all species of livestock . In 1985, Lois McR ae (our daughter) joined Stockman’s Agencies and travels to most of the sales and events. Joyce Gordon continues to work at a few sales and follows up on paper work at home. In 2013, Stockman’s Agencies was changed to our new company name of Keystone Livestock S er vices. We are agents for Canadian Farm Insurance out of S askatoon and under writers are Lloyd’s of London. Joyce and Lois love the livestock industr y and appreciate all the business we have received in the past and look for ward to many more years of marketing livestock insurance for our past and new valued clients. Celebrating 44 years in the livestock Insurance business.
