PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE President’s Report
Bill Campbell
As I sit and write this President’s report we are having a break from seeding operations with rain (not enough) and cold temperatures (freezing). I hope that everyone’s calving season has been successful and your breeding plans are coming together. Bull sale season is nearing completion and hopefully you were able to source the genetics you wanted. The results for the Douglas Bull Test were impressive with Limousin being the high selling breeds of 8 breeds with a $4,636.00 average, $650.00 higher than the next closest breed average. Congratulations to the consignors at Douglas. The weather continues to be a topic of discussion with a milder winter, less snowfall and less spring moisture. Hopefully we will get the forages to start growing for pasture and hay fields. Too bad we can’t even out the last few years of excess moisture to being production cycles closer to normal or average. The weather and beef prices have a lot of similarities. Too little then too high and then too little! We have seen beef prices fall about 30% from 2014-2015. Most beef producers would have only had the opportunity to cash in on the ‘good times’ once as cows only calve once a year. Very few producers would have had the chance to catch the high prices for 2 calf crops. Feedlots complain about losing $250.00-$300.00 per head on cattle bought in the third quarter of 2015. Maybe they are feeding the wrong type of cattle. No feed efficiency and no yield will bring you those types of returns. Limousin is the answer to both of these problems. Hopefully industry leaders will be able to provide the right incentives to correct certain problems the beef industry has directed itself into. The summer will be busy for many Limousin enthusiasts with the Provincial Show in Lundar June 10 and 11th. Many 4-H shows and Achievements will be happening over the next 2 months. If you get an opportunity, attend one in your local area and show your support for our youth. Manitoba Beef Round Up will be held in Neepawa on July 29-31st. This is a great event for Manitoba youth to learn to showcase their talents. Encourage your local beef enthusiasts to attend this event. They won’t be disappointed. Plans are continuing for the National Show at Ag-Ex. Stay tuned for more details. If you wish to support this event contact Mark Angus or myself. Good luck this summer. May your grass grow tall and your calves weigh heavy this fall. ‘Til next time. Bill Campbell

What an adventure Mother Nature has taken us on this spring! ‘Sprinter ’ for what seemed like forever, too wet, too dry and now back into a wet weather pattern. It is shaping up to be an exciting year! The MB Limousin Summer Show in Lundar, MB will start the season and as many summers go in Manitoba, there are several great fairs to attend and Jackpot classes to enter. Take the opportunity to check on the Limousin classes. The National Limousin Events will be held in Brandon this fall, mark you calendar to bring cattle out for this event, or plan to attend to view your next genetic purchase decisions in person. Mark your calendars for the MB Limousin Advantage Sale in December. May you all have an abundance of good grass, sunshine and good health. Suggestions, creative ideas, and constructive criticisms are always welcomed. Respectfully, Cher yl Quote of the Day
