Contents page analysis 2

Masthead • The masthead (CONTENTS) is a red font its rather bold and its white inside. It has the subheading above it of EMPIRE. • The mast head connotes exclusiveness and formality, it is in the style of a old cinema sign this helps the audience identify with the magazine and it also identifies what the magazine genre is. • The red grabs your attention which is important on a contents page because when someone wants to find something specific they go to the contents page. • The sub title is a house style of the magazine and it there to remind you what magazine you are reading, it's a way of making people do more social interaction. • The masthead is bellow the image this connotes that the celeb is bigger that the title, this is appropriate because empire says that they don’t need to show off there name to be big and popular. • The background is very effective with the title it makes the masthead much more obvious.

Image • The image is of Matt Smith swivelling round with a white shirt, and a black duffel coat. • Matt Smith has his iconic hair cut this connotes that the article is going to be either about Doctor Who or about himself, this appeals to the target audience because a big section of empire is about TV not just film. • His pose is fabulous, and snazzy its there to connote his Broadway career and it also appeals to the target audiences, who would probably want to dress smarter and differently from the mainstreamers. This also suggests that It is there to appeal to the more aspirers and successors that read it rather than the mainstreamers. • The text in the image is typed around the image this connotes that the image is the most important and powerful thing on the page, it also connotes the magazine it self, empire mostly doesn’t try to cover up the fact there interviews are exclusive they like to show off that they are the biggest film magazine around and that they can have any star they want.

Articles • The articles are all features on this first page, written in a italic font for the numbers and the same font as the mast head for the titles of the articles. • The articles are all features because they are trying to make the reader, read the big news. They are also there because EMPIRE wants to flaunt there fame, showing that they have the biggest people in the business • The Matt Smith article relates to the image, thus making the image appropriate. • The use of the same style for the numbers and text connotes that they are sticking to a house style because the border is the same, even though its not bold the font stands out and you can quite clearly read what number it is, they have also saved on space for the image by making the font thinner. • The use of the same style font of the mast head for the article titles, is effective because it makes the titles stand out, It also makes the sense of exclusivity and style present thought the page rather than just on the title, it adds colour to an other wise black and white bland scene, this also makes it stand out.
