SCREAM MAGAZINE ANALYSIS The layout of SCREAM magazine is very conventional and follows most of magazines conventions; The mast head “SCREAM” is located directly below the top of the magazine, following the rule of thirds there is also a selling line just bellow “Blood Guts, Gore & More! . Anchorage text accompanies the main image, on the left hand side there are multiple sell lines accompanied by graphics, with also additional sell lines of There is also the bar code price and issue number in their convention locations. The Mast head of SCREAM is very iconic and symbolic of the horror genre this is reflected by the blood dripping from the typography and the red fill which often symbolizes danger and injury. The typography for every SCREAM magazine is the same but it always has a different theme much like how EMPIRE or SHOCK HORROR does its very conventional but it is a very interesting way of keeping the audience interested in the product and it also makes the magazine topical due to the appropriate title style. The selling line is “Blood,Guts,Gore & More” it’s a very memorable selling line due to its rhyme length and alliteration you could easily remember the magazine by the selling line, if you didn’t know what the magazine was about it easily sums it up here therefore letting the reader know what genre the magazine is about without opening the magazine this is essential in shops. The house style of the magazine is red, yellow and white, this house style is often the same colour scheme in many horror movie posters, and the colours also contrast with each other leaving each word and image easily distinct. The house style also matches the image which makes it aesthetically pleasing. The
colours in the magazine colour strongly connote Horror, especially with the blood splatters and the dripping blood. There are different contrasting fonts used on the cover which much like the colours reflect fonts used in horror movie posters, the fonts give the magazine and official yet casual look to it and make it feel very informative and fun. The main image is simple and effective, it’s a mid shot/close up of just a skull but the skull still has eyes, this is very spooky and freaky it’s bound to unnerve the audience, if you a big fan of horror which is exactly who this magazine target audience is, you will be defiantly inclined to read on. The image is a official poster from the movie evil dead two which is a direct link the anchorage text. The sell lines are catchy and short this accompanied by the small images makes them an easy peak as into what is inside so even if you don’t like the feature or the magazine itself you still might be attracted by what else is going on. It’s typical for a film magazine to mention stars and films and this is no exception. The sell lines down the bottom of the page easily show the versatility in the product and mention things such as games and reviews which are not expected from the typical magazine making it all the more interesting to an audience. The anchorage text is a slight alteration from the original poster type, the original had a yellow border had yellow round this they probably did this so people wouldn’t get the brands mixed up also it shows variation rather than the masthead looking exactly like the anchorage text.
