ALPINE BOTANIC CITY Zermatt, Switzerland 46.0207° N, 7.7491° E 5th Year Project / MArch Part 2 Merit Tutor / Mark Smout , Laura Allen

The project surrounds by the utopian discussion of how landscape and built environment in the future can provide an environmentally harmonious world for the human and nature under the circumstance that the relationship in between human being and nature is extremely sensitive nowadays because of climate change. The site of the project specifically has been chosen at Zermatt where is confronting climate change and the critical sustainable environment under mass tourism. based on the concept of board game I created, I argue the priority of new development at Zermatt should primary respond to the changing environment at the Alps, and it can be identified the changing vegetation pattern at the Alps. Thus, I propose a greenhouse landscape that can conserve the local woods and authentic rare flora.

1. 3. 2. Based on the scientific research, the vegetation could be replaced by tropical plants or the species that can grow in the higher temperature environment., thus, it can be argued that the green house will stand as an ecological museum containing disappeared authentic landscape and climate of Zermatt. The project provides key essential programmes for botanic project and focuses on the intimacy in between the conserved alpine plants and visitors. The composition and curation of each cultivation beds are aiming to provide a world that people can immerse and surrounded by the delicacy of alpine rarities. The greenhouse serves as an architectural scale capsule containing authentic alpine climate and allows the delicacy of alpine plants to colonise over the tourist area of Zermatt and become a crystal city that replace the existing resort landscape. 1. T h e p ro j e c t d e m o n s t r a t e s a p e r s o n a l c r a f t i n g methodology while developing in the first phase of my project which can demonstrate the communication of intimacy with landscape reality in design by playing around the geographic map and multiply with architectural modelling methods, such as hatching, contouring, prototyping and material articulating. The technique is applied to create the element set of the board game which is a conceptual project based on barter lifestyle in response to the critical environment under mass tourism and local climate change.

The making of glacier is folding up 4 wings of the flat seeted roof. Each wings will be folded up and stick to the trapezoidal tongues in the centre of the roof sheet.

B. C. A.

A. Chill Ice House / Toronto, Otario, Canada B. Energy cube used in the game for trading glacier property. The pattern is inspired by the flow pattern of alps glacier. The design of this house element is an expression about the speculative vernacular architecture of zermatt can be made with glacical material. However, the cost and sustainability is the issue.

C. Glacier Roof.

ASSEMBLING INSTRUCTION

The house is a combination of two parts. The making of two parts is identical as what diagram has shown. Remember cut the join seam of each fragment, which allows you combine half of house with other kind of house elements.

2-A The pattern represent clay-made architecture is arrayed brick slabs. The brick pattern is can be used to express different meaning that architecture would like to deliver to publics. In associate wih the geological section which represent the composition of clay level, the design of the clay elements resonate the conversation of intricate quality of the material before and after the making process.

B. C. A.

A. Kunstmuseum by Christ & Gantenbein / Basel, Switzerland. B. Energy cube used in the game for trading clay Brick property. C. Brick Roof.

The pattern is inspired by geographic drawing which using symbols and colour to demonstrate the section of topographies. The specific pattern used in this game element is the one for representing clay or soil in geographic context.

2-B

2-A

2-B

The crafting of clay roof element is joining three pieces into a three dimensional geometry. The roof is seperated into outer shell, core and the bottom slab. The way of making please follow the instruction of the diagram. The best quality of making is give a light slice on the folding line.

Situating in north east London, the project stands as an landscapereserve archive for conserving and exhbiting the disappeared wild landscape in London Greenbelt. The project represent reflection from human angle on mass-housing development and urbanisation. In order to create well-regulated indoor environment for restored landscape artefacts, the main structure of the archive is using rammed earth mixed with concrete shell technology to achieve the ideal. The project brings together the topics including cultural conservation, community narrative and playfulness for showcase facility in design. The project also looked at the emergent structural technology of concrete frame structure and its combination with earthen building elements.

Passive way to bring in the air from outdoor will increase the humidity in the workshop. As the result, dehumidifer is required to regulate the humidity. 6. SYNC / SINK CITY Mai-Liao, Yunlin County, Taiwan 23.7485° N, 120.2563° E 5th Year Project / BArch Tutor / Jerry Hsiao

Focusing on researching the land sunsidence crisis at the west coast of Tawian, the project proposed a utopian scenerio which aims to preserve the original life pattern in a landscape of tower structures. 'Tower-ising' the township of Mailio is the key concept to serve the fishery industry popuated coastal areas of Taiwan. The new towship will be sitted on a resilient infrastructure to constantly adapt the building structures with earth surface and sea levels. Insdie the towers, new water recycle and treatment stategy has been intorduced to sustain the native fishery industry and other habitable area. The narrative of the city also has been developed further to resonate the book ' Smart City' by Anthony M. Townsend, which is looking at how emergent communication and delivery technologies can provide a new Synchronization in between economy, ecology and cultural activities

Indicated in the statistic report by Nasa, the sea level will rise 4.7 meter in 2050 by global warming. Taiwan as known as an island state located at Pacific Ocean Area, which is also in the crisis of national land decrement. The project is located at Mailiao Township in Yunlin County, Taiwan, where is the first to bear the brunt of crisis. According to the analysis of Mailiao, the land subsidence has been increasing the speed of national land decrement in the reason of private wells construction to keep the vigorousness of aquaculture leading to over ground water consumption. However, everything can be traced back to the inefficient water resource distribution and unsustainable usage. The township is composed of three individual industries landscapes, which is aquaculture farm, industrial island by sea reclamation and agriculture field. The proposal focuses on how to come up with a sustainable living space for local residents and further development of local industries transforming into a new industrial chains. Complexing the features of industries, soil consistency and aqua system, in conclusion a sustainable utilizing circulation of water has to be established bringing up with a new settlement pattern to face the crisis.

The industry tower is programmed with residential space for native people and potential foreign population, intelligently managed aquaculture modules and research facilities for governmental organizations and private corporation. From top to the bottom and inside to outside of tower, a cycling self-circulation water system service the different functional spaces in the building. Decreasing the proportion of water utilization supplied from dam, the living system relies on the recycled water ,which is purified from wasted water of tower to 85~90% of purity water. There are mechanical rooms of physical, chemical and biological inserted around the wetland on the ground, and water will be released into the wetland dissolving oxygen to approach the purity. Fresh water will be transported to the industry tower in opposite side and return to the aquaculture system and residential system. When transporting fresh water, the wasted water evacuation process will be active ,and sustainably repeating the circulation. The redundant water will be reserved in the conservation modules and waits for the next purification process.

TONJI GATEWAY Huang-Pu, Shanghai, China 31.2627° N, 121.4599° E 4th Year Project / BArch Tutor / Ercu Gorgul

Sitting in north west Shanghai, the scheme of the project is to propose a mix-use campus for Tonji University including offices, boutique hotel, design labs and commercial retails. The concept of planning strategy is providing a dynamic landscape at podium level with sunken space and lifted green space. Above podium is 26 storeys office towers and boutique hotels, which provides a 'gate' image for the new campus of Tonji University.
