FROM THE EDITOR It's so good to be back. All of us at Outdoor Sports Guide hope you've stayed safe and healthy during our publishing pause, and we're so grateful for your continued support during these uncertain times. As we planned our 21st annual Keeper issue in February, we couldn't have imagined the lockdowns, race cancellations, and economic downturn that awaited us in March. And while the immediate future of racing and large gatherings is uncertain, this Keeper issue features stories fit for our "new normal" world. From how to train while social distancing to virtual races you can run while supporting local businesses, this issue is different than usual—but so worth the read. Our Keeper calendar typically features 700+ races and events, but due to the coronavirus outbreak, all spring events were canceled or rescheduled. With Utah cautiously reopening, we're publishing a reduced calendar with updates to in-person and virtual events. While the information is accurate at press time, please visit sportsguidemag.com for updates. See you outside—from a safe distance of course.

TRAINING GOES VIRTUAL

Running and Cycling Meet Virtual Reality with Zwift

By Heather C. Hamblin Images courtesy of Zwift

Train from home with Zwift.

Indoor running and cycling training is going digital thanks to Zwift, an app that incorporates virtual reality in your day-to-day fitness experience. Unfortunately, you’ll still have to do the cardio work yourself, but Zwift lets you inject a virtual element into your training, bringing you new scenery, data tracking, and a community of other athletes for friendly competition and company. (A bonus if you’re trying to avoid illness but miss the community of training with others.)

treadmills, runners can simply wear a cadence tracker, which typically clips onto the laces of your shoes to track your speed, distance, and cadence. Zwift works with many different brands of cadence trackers; one of the least expensive options is their own, the Zwift RunPod at $39.99. Its NPE Runn Tracker device makes any treadmill smart, by hooking to the side of your treadmill and measuring speed from your treadmill belt.

After initial beta testing in 2014, Zwift’s popularity exploded. Users, often called “Zwifters,” can run or bike all over the world from the comfort of their own home or the gym. The app also connects users to other popular training apps, such as Strava and TrainingPeaks, where you can upload and share your Zwift rides, races, and runs.

For Cyclists Cyclists will need their bike and a trainer. Trainers sit on the ground and connect to the back axle of the bike. The most basic trainers cost around $50, while a smart trainer that automatically adjusts resistance and measures speed, power, and distance can run well over $1000. Once in the app, you can acquire different Zwift bikes to maximize your performance on whatever virtual terrain you choose. It's just like choosing between Yoshi on a motorcycle or Bowser in a flame runner on Mario Kart.

How Does It Work? New users get a seven-day free trial of the Zwift app, after which the subscription fee is $14.99 per month, but you will need some gear. In addition to a bike for cyclists, or a treadmill for runners, there's specific equipment Zwift. First, you need a device to connect to the Zwift app. The most popular device to use is an Apple iPad, but the app also works on PCs, Macs, iPhones, Apple TV, Android phones, and tablets.

Once you have all your tech set, you’re ready to go. In the app, create your own avatar and choose your training adventure. Users can select a structured workout—some are as little as 30 minutes— like a customized training plan created by coaches, a race or competition, or a free ride/run. Track your distance, speed, and other stats to drive your own progress, or just go for distance and enjoy the virtual scenery.

For Runners After that, runners must have a device for tracking their runs. Many smart treadmills with Bluetooth capability connect directly with the Zwift app, making that a very easy option. For all other

Location, Location One of the most compelling aspects of the Zwift app is the various locations you can visit in your virtual training world. Run or bike in New York City, London, Innsbruck, Yorkshire, Richmond, Bologna, Crit City, or

Group runs and rides are structured for athletes to go at their own pace, or push hard to beat others competing from all over the world. The ability to connect with others offers support and motivation without ever leaving your house. Zwift truly ups the ante on indoor training, especially when the weather is less than fair. It can be used by any ability, from beginner to Tour de France athlete, and is available to you any time of day, whether you have hours to train or are fitting in a workout between work, making dinner, or picking the kids up from soccer practice. In an increasingly virtual world, Zwift is on its way to being the best way to train indoors.

She received a bachelor’s degree in English literature and Italian language from the University of Utah and works for Uof U Health. In her free time, you can find her traveling, cooking, practicing yoga, rock climbing, or exploring the hiking trails and ski runs in her native state.

STAY HEALTHY; KEEP TRAINING Train with people around the world, without the fear of catching a virus or cold, with Zwift. Whether you’re feeling sick or want to avoid the spread of germs, you can stay home and still keep up with your group training or racing. “Zwift shows how technology can be used to ride and run to further your training and racing while coming together with a global community that matches where you are in terms of fitness, time, and location. The community also helps to push fitness forward, from group workouts to races, so users can ride and run alone or enjoy being with others from across the world.” -Craig Taylor, Director of Growth Marketing, Running & Triathlon at Zwift

the importance of cross-training with yoga By Julia Partain

Now that your calendar is filled with virtual and rescheduled races, it’s time to start thinking about training. Whether you're new to competing or tackling new distances, everyone can benefit from cross-training with yoga. As you tick up your mileage, it’s important to supplement your preferred activity or sport with yoga to boost flexibility, core strength, and stability. It also helps to improve your range of motion and joint mobility. Mentally, yoga helps create a heightened level of focus and awareness during training and racing. This mental training teaches athletes to perform more effectively during a race staying focused on form, learning how to deal with negative thoughts, and working through unexpected distractions. Here are some yoga tips and stretches for runners, cyclists, and swimmers to incorporate into your workout routine for the most successful (and injury-free) race season yet. Yoga for Runners From dodging rocks and roots on the trail to repetitive pounding on concrete or asphalt, running of all varieties can create tightness in the same areas of the body: calves, quads, hamstrings, IT bands, and hips. A simple yoga routine loosens tight spots, strengthens weak spots, and makes you a better, less injury-prone runner. Standing poses improve balance, coordination, and encourage the development of even strength throughout the leg. The more you can strengthen all the muscles around your joints, the less vulnerable those areas are to injury. Additionally, the core strength 8«

you gain from yoga gives you strong abdominal and back muscles, keeping your torso upright and your pelvis in healthy alignment, allowing you to move more efficiently. Yoga for Cyclists Cycling is a powerful sport, executed in a fixed position—often for hours at a time. After a long ride, most riders experience stiff legs. Inflexible leg muscles can be the cause of many adverse conditions, including IT band, lower back and knee pain, along with overall decreased range of motion. Through the practice of yoga, cyclists can decrease muscular imbalances, which improves riding abilities and reduces injury. Yoga builds strength in the leg and glutes while cultivating flexibility in the hip flexors. This translates to a more fluid stroke and stride plus reduced stress on your back. Yoga for Swimmers Mix up your dryland training and improve balance, alignment, and breathing with yoga. Yoga offers flexibility, improves range of motion, and helps swimmers build muscle strength. The breath awareness from yoga translates well into swimming, since movements are synchronized with your breath in both yoga and swimming. Yoga poses use the force of gravity on body weight to increase muscle and bone strength. While swimming takes the pull of gravity away, yoga helps put it back in to keep the body balanced and strong. The focus of yoga for swimmers is on the shoulders, hip flexors, hamstrings, feet, and ankles. ¦¦¦

Finding Balance

If you’re sufficiently convinced to give yoga a whirl, here are a few simple asanas (poses) to get you started. Downward-Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana) Begin on your hands and knees. Align wrists under shoulders and knees under hips. Spread fingers and press into palms. Tuck toes and lift knees off the floor. Gently try to straighten legs and raise hips into an inverted V. Breathe deeply for 10 breaths. As your muscles relax, try to straighten legs more and sink heels toward the mat. Benefits: Stretches hamstrings, calves and foot arches, and strengthens shoulders. Low Lunge (Anjaneyasana) From Downward Dog, step right foot forward between your hands. Lower left knee and, keeping the right knee over right ankle, slide the left knee back. Turn the top of your left foot to the floor and lift your torso upright. Then sweep your arms out to the sides and up overhead. Drop your tailbone toward the floor and look up. Hold for 10 breaths, release, and repeat on the other side. Benefits: Stretches hip flexors; strengthens hamstrings and quads. Standing Forward Bend (Uttanasana) Stand with feet parallel, hip-width distance apart. Gently bend over your legs, pulling abs in and bending slightly at knees. Grab opposite elbows and hang. Hold for 10 breaths and release. Benefits: Stretches hamstrings and shoulders. Legs Up the Wall (Viparita Karani) Sidle up beside an open wall space with your hips as close to the base of the wall as is comfortable. Swing legs up the wall and lie

back. Rest here anywhere from 10 breaths to 10 minutes. Benefits: Relieves tension in legs, feet, and back while stretching hamstrings and glutes. Reclining Hand-to-Big-Toe (Supta Padangusthasana) Lie on your back with both legs extended. Bend right knee, loop a yoga strap (or dog leash or belt) around the arch of the right foot and hold both ends of the strap with your right hand. Try to straighten your right leg. Your hamstring relaxes, try to gently pull it toward you, feeling a good stretch down the back of the thigh. Hold for 10 breaths and repeat on the other leg. Benefits: Stretches hamstrings. Bow Pose (Dhanurasana) Start by lying face down on the mat. Bend knees backwards and gently grab your ankles. Hold your ankles by pressing the feet into the palms. Ensure your knees are kept hip-width apart. Pull your chest off the mat. Hold for five breaths, slowly come down, and repeat three times. Benefits: Opens and stretches the front of the body; strengthens the back muscles and rotator cuff. LEVELING UP Preparing for Your First Half or Full Marathon

Photo: Image licensed by Ingram Image

By Coach Lora Erickson

You’ve dabbled in short-distance events and are thinking about going big for your next race. Here’s what you need to know when training for a half or full marathon: Increase Your Training Volume It may seem obvious, but as you increase your race distance, your training volume will need to go up. It’s important to understand that you need to make time to train more, which includes the all-important weekly long run. Long runs can start around eight miles and build to 12 miles or more for a half marathon. Marathons require long preparatory runs that build up from 10 miles to a few 20 or 22 milers. As far as weekly miles, it’s common for novice runners to run 20–35 miles a week while training to finish a half marathon and 35–50 miles a week for a marathon. Build up to this mileage slowly to prevent injury; three to five runs a week is sufficient. Allow Time for Your Body to Adapt to Training Most running injuries occur from doing too much too soon. It’s essential to allow your body to adapt to the increased volume and intensity over time. For each athlete, this time may be different depending on your experience, but generally, less experienced runners need to build up miles over 6–8 months to do a marathon. Even for intermediate runners who have experienced a few half marathons, I suggest at least 4–6 months to build up to a full marathon. Follow the 10% rule: increasing total weekly volume no more than 10% each week. If you’re a new runner who has done a few 5K or 10K events and want to do a half marathon, I suggest taking two to three months to allow your body to adapt. This adjustment period helps prevent injuries. 10«

Training

Be Committed and Allow Proper Recovery During my time coaching, I’ve seen more success with athletes who understand and commit to the training, including recovery time. Training for extended events not only takes more time to run more miles, but also requires more sleep, more time to stretch and foam roll, and taking ice baths. You may need to discipline yourself to get up early to train and will be putting more miles on your shoes more quickly, requiring you to replace them more often. Running in good shoes will help you stay injury-free, but know that each pair will last 300–500 miles at the most. Listen to Your Body As your training volume goes up, so does the risk of injury. It’s important to listen to your body. If you’ve been running long enough, you’ve probably heard this phrase before, but what does it mean? Soreness and pain are part of training, but when is it too much? I teach my athletes to ask these questions to differentiate pain/soreness from injury: • • • •

Is the pain on one side or both? Is the pain sharp or just a dull ache? Is it getting better or worse over time or during a run? Does the pain come and go?

Pain on one side can indicate a muscular imbalance or a potential injury. Often running on busy roads can lead to this and cause injuries, meaning a change of terrain could be needed. If the pain is sharp, sudden, or persists, go to a sports medicine doctor. It’s always a good idea to talk to your doctor about your plans before running or starting a training program. It’s not worth pushing through pain and ending up having a lingering injury that can put you out for months.

Common running injuries include: shin splints, IT band syndrome, plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, runners’ knee (Chondromalacia), and stress fractures. Most of these are overtraining injuries, so do some research and understand the signs and symptoms to avoid these pitfalls. Ease into training properly, and take time off for recovery to avoid most of these.

many runners toe the line, knowing nothing about the race they plan to run. As a coach, the training I provide my athletes reflects conditions they’ll face on race day. If it’s mainly downhill, or hilly, your training should reflect that. If you’re running a trail race versus a road race, you’ll want to do the bulk of your training on trails. If this is your first long-distance event, start with a milder road half or full marathon over a trail event. Generally, trail races are more challenging than road races, requiring different shoes and for you to bring fuel and hydration supplies along. Hire a Coach I’ve always preached, “You don’t know what you don’t know.” It’s valuable to have an outside perspective, especially for your first long event like a marathon. Sometimes it’s hard to see what you need in training when you’re fatigued or tired, which often happens as training volume increases. A coach can provide valuable insight, structure, advice, nutrition suggestions, and motivation for their athletes. Coached athletes usually experience less injury and are more likely to achieve their goals.

Find the Right Race There are many things to consider when choosing a race: the location, cost, and terrain. The factor that impacts training the most is terrain. Most race websites have race route maps and elevation profiles to review. Over the years, I’ve been surprised by how

Fall Races to Start Training for Now

Ogden Marathon 2018

The 2020 racing season is unlike any other. Whether you’d planned to check the Boston Marathon off your bucket list or were ready to run the Salt Lake Marathon, COVID-19 put a wrench in race plans with all spring races canceled, delayed, or turned virtual.

Hollow State Park followed by a 112-mile bike showcasing views of St. George and the red rocks of the Southwest. The race wraps up with a 26.2-mile run with city and desert views. Looking for training guidance for this tough race? Join a global community of athletes for coach-led online training, virtual race competitions, and celebrations at ironmanvirtualclub.com.

While many local races have been scrapped entirely for 2020, other favorites are delayed until fall. When (and if) these planned races go on, we imagine they’ll be different than years past. Expect fewer participants, more waves of racers, hand sanitizer stations, and no race afterparties—just to name a few potential changes.

XTERRA SPRINT TRIATHLON AND TRAIL RACES September 19–20 Dip your toes in the triathlon waters without committing to the full distance at this sprint XTERRA race at Snowbasin Resort near Ogden. Held in conjunction with the XTERRA USA Championship event, amateurs and teams are welcome to compete. As a team or individual, race 750M swim, 19KM mountain bike, and 5K trail run at this off-road mountain event. Race entry includes an event t-shirt and post-race refreshments. USAT license required and a single-day license can be purchased for $15 at registration. Trail run 21K, 10K, 5K, and 5X5 TEAM Relay on Sunday.

While we can’t promise what these runs will look like come race day, we know simply signing up and prepping is one way to amp up your training. Here are a few rescheduled races to add to your fall racing calendar: IRONMAN NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP ST. Packet pickup available on race day or Wednesday, September 30 at Salt Lake Running Company. Visit girlsontherunutah.org for more information about participating as a Running Buddy. GEAR FOR RACING SAFELY Running in groups will be different for the foreseeable future, and though you already know to pack your running shoes and water bottle for a race, you may need special post-pandemic race gear. Pack these items along to stay safe while you run with others: Face Mask: Running in a face mask can be challenging for breathing, but consider wearing one at the race start and finish area when social distancing can’t be maintained. Hand Sanitizer: Bring a small bottle of hand sanitizer along to ensure your hands are germ-free when washing isn’t an option. Gloves: Non-medical running gloves don’t offer guaranteed virus protection, but they’ll remind you not to touch your face and reduce your contact with contaminated surfaces. Snacks: Don’t count on food during or after the race. Bring GU packets and snacks to keep yourself going. Be your own support system and carry water instead of using aid stations. By Connie Lewis

There is a rhythm to training. What seems hard at first becomes more than habit the more you do it. At some point, you reach a place where you can’t imagine missing a day of training at the gym. But suddenly everything came to a halt, altering your usual training routine. Coronavirus closed gyms for nearly two months, and while many are now open with social distancing rules in place, you may still be hesitant to one. Are there other ways to train and be safe? The answer is yes. Denise Druce has been a fitness instructor, student, and now instructor of instructors for 40 years. For 20 of those years, she’s owned and operated health clubs with her husband, Michael Druce. “I’ve worn spandex to work every day, making a living out of doing what I love and keeping people healthy,” Denise says.

Stay Fit, But Stay Solo How to Keep Training While Social Distancing

During the last 20 years, she’s gravitated to yoga, finding it a good workout for “an aging body.” She trains yoga teachers through her school, Yoga Assets. A lifelong learner, Denise figures she’s earned every single industry certification—along with working with thousands of people over the years. Denise sees the current social distancing regulations as a chance to try new things and make new healthy habits. “Go to bed at a decent hour, wake up at a decent hour, eat healthier, and try some of the things you always wished you had time to try,” she says. Staying active can also help manage stress, which can be a killer. “Whatever is happening with the body’s immune system, stress makes it worse,” Denise says. “A strong immune system comes from working out.” So what are some of the options? A great place to start is going outside. Just breathing the fresh air instead of the stale air in your cooped up spaces at home can make a difference. Go for a walk, a jog, a run, or a hike. Bonus: take your dog along. Michael loves the Stairmaster at the gym but found an alternative at Sugar House Park. He takes a spin around the park and then sprints up the hills to get the same workout as when he’s on the Stairmaster. He also stops and does some pushups, sit-ups, and pull-ups. Many local parks have built-in fitness trails with equipment to work your whole body. Be sure to sanitize any park equipment you use. If the weather keeps you home, Denise suggests breaking out old exercise equipment that’s just gathering dust. Pull out the treadmills, the bands you bought on TV, the kettlebells, and get to work. There are plenty of free online platforms, apps, or YouTube videos if you want to follow along with an instructor. “Since you are home anyway, now is the time to dedicate to those workouts people always say they don’t have time for,” says Denise. “No more excuses.”

¦¦¦

There’s also an at-home solution for instructors. Denise didn’t want to miss out on teaching so did something Micahel had been urging her to for years. She set up an online class on Zoom and teaches people all over the company who join on their computers or phones. She can fill 100 spots each session, and all she has to do is set up a webcam and microphone. Zoom allows participants to comment, and unless they black out their screen, she can see everyone’s face a la a Brady Bunch-style. Even during a pandemic, there are still opportunities to stay healthy, continue to train, and stay active. Just step outside your door, and remember the six-foot rule. An Explosive Run to the Top

Utahn Grayson Murphy Dominates on Trails and Roads By Connie Lewis

If it seems like world-class runner Grayson Murphy came out of nowhere on the pro running scene, it’s because she did. Grayson grew up playing soccer and ran only for condition, until joining the Santa Clara University track and cross country teams during her sophomore year. “I experienced a very explosive rise to the top,” says Grayson, “going from being the worst on the team to the best,” and soon found that she enjoyed running. Given her relatively short time in the racing scene, Grayson has racked up some impressive wins. At her first post-collegiate race, the 2018 USATF Outdoor Championships, she finished seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. In her first two professional road races — the Deseret News 10K and the Great Cow Harbor 10K in Northport, New York—she took second place. In 2019, Grayson won the World Mountain Running Championships in Argentina then a week later the XTERRA Trail Run Championship Half Marathon in Hawaii. Collegiate Career So how did she start winning competitive races so quickly? It all started in college. Grayson spent two years at Santa Clara before transferring to the University of Utah for a better program. Since she was already competing, the U couldn’t recruit her. So she contacted them, got a release from Santa Clara, and found that Utah was not only willing to make a place for her on the team, but would give her a scholarship too. By her graduation in 2018, Grayson racked up an impressive array of running accolades: All American in cross country, All American for indoor track in the 3K and 5K, and All American in outdoor track for 18«

steeplechase. She accomplished it all while earning her degree in civil engineering—though she does it more as a hobby than a career. Returning to Utah After graduation, Grayson signed with Northern Arizona Elite (NAZ Elite), sponsored by HOKA. She moved to Flagstaff and trained there for a year until she realized she wasn’t enjoying the team or the training style. She missed running Salt Lake City’s trails and competing solely on roads. Grayson was homesick too, and decided to move back home to Utah in June 2019. “I was missing my family, my friends, and my boyfriend,” she says. Upon returning to Utah, she embraced trail running and signed up for her first off-road race. Grayson toed the line of the Cirque Series’ Brighton race in June 2019, and struggled with running at the high altitude and snowy conditions. Despite having to walk some of the course, she came in second place to Olympian Morgan Arritola. While it was challenging, Grayson loved the experience and signed up for more difficult races. Things started rolling from there, and she won the 2019 at Hobbler Creek Half Marathon, Cirque SeriesSun Valley, and the Huntsville Half Marathon. Saucony Comes Calling In August 2019 at the brutal Bridger Ridge Run trail race in Bozeman, Montana, Grayson came in second place with a time of 3 hours 41 minutes, but she and the first-place finisher broke the long-standing course record. However, it was September’s USATF Mountain Running Championships that changed her professional running fate. Grayson knew it was a risky career move to go forward with no ¦¦¦

sponsorship and no team, but after winning the USATF Mountain Running Championships, she qualified for Team USA and sponsorship offers rolled in. While she and her agent spoke to several companies before the race, it was running shoe and apparel company Saucony that came through with the best offer. Besides her sponsorship, Grayson earns prize money from races plus bonuses from Saucony if she places in an agreed-upon race. But she runs for fun too, and recently ran and won the Antelope Island 25K, even though it wasn’t eligible for the Saucony bonus. Her favorite win so far was running the World Championship in Patagonia in November 2019. She raced the 14.7K race in 1:15:20 and took first by 21 seconds. Overall, Grayson loves her blossoming running career. “I am grateful for the chance for full-time sponsorship. My main job can be running. I don’t have to have side jobs; I can focus on running and enjoying it without worrying about how to pay the bills,” she says. “It is not common in the running world and I don’t take it for granted. I have friends who would kill to have what I have.” But she doesn’t do it alone. Technically, Grayson is an independent runner who works with a coach, and hers is Boulder, Coloradobased David Roche—who trains mountain trail runners nationally and internationally. However, all her coached training is done remotely. Roche writes her training and she then reports back to him by text or email on

how the sessions went. “At this point, I don’t need someone to watch me run,” Grayson says. Looking to the Future Grayson plans to race on trails and roads in 2020 and is focusing on races that are 10K or longer on both surfaces. She likes mixing it up to prevent boredom, and her long-term goal is to qualify for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. As for what it takes to become an international competitor, Grayson generally runs 70 miles a week, averaging about 10 miles a day. She does two strength sessions at the gym and will sometimes take an easy day of cross training if she is particularly tired. Early in the season she runs once a day, but later in the season she runs twice a day. Her advice for those who’d like to follow in her running shoes? “Don’t try and do it all at once. It is a process,” Grayson says. “Enjoy the process of getting there as much as getting the wins. And be patient.”

When this unique bike shop closed its doors, it seemed like the end of an era. But with a boost from a big name in cycling, it’s reopened to bring its “concierge” concept to one of the hottest biking spots in the Mountain West.

REINVENTING RENTALS PARK CITY BIKE DEMOS’ SECOND ACT

By Molly Andersen It started with a bread truck and a dream. In 2014, Andre Shoumatoff took two former delivery vans, filled them with bikes, tools, and knowledgeable staff, and began delivering rental bikes to Park City visitors at their hotels or chosen trailheads. Soon, though, Andre realized an unexpected side effect of the personal service he was providing, with carefully selected and fitted bikes for every customer. After a day-long ride, about one in eight customers wanted to purchase the bikes they’d tried out. After establishing a solid footing in Park City, Andre began dreaming of establishing a more permanent presence. In 2016, Park City Bike Demos opened its brick-and-mortar location. The bread trucks, though, weren’t going anywhere; staff still delivered bikes straight to customers so they could to take a spin. Soon, the shop became a vital part of Park City’s cycling community. Groups of all ages and backgrounds were invited to call it home, including the Utah High School Racing League, the largest NICA racing program in the country. But in an era of spiking rents and cutthroat online competition, keeping a physical store open proved an ongoing struggle. “Some ideas we thought were good didn’t really work,” says marketing

director Zak Ricklefs. “We had to keep so many bikes in inventory that the space felt more like a warehouse than a shop. Plus, the business is tough under any circumstances. Bike shops have low margins and one in 17 closes every year.” In August 2018, the crew called it quits, shuttering the shop and preparing—they thought— to abandon a dream. Then an unexpected source offered to breathe new life into the business. Robert DeMartini, former CEO of New Balance and current CEO of USA Cycling, bought Park City Bike Demos, reopening the shop’s doors in February 2019 with a commitment to the original concept. That concept: concierge-style service with a friendly, helpful attitude, is still at the core of Park City Bike Demos’ business. “It’s shocking how many people report bad customer service experiences at bike shops,” Zak says. “Someone who’s the president of IMBA and beat Lance in the Leadville 100 could walk into a bike shop in Steamboat, and someone there will belittle him.” Walk into Park City Bike Demos’ shop, though, and you’ll find a much different experience. The lights are kept low, the music high, the coffee fresh. “We like to keep it a little dark and sexy,” Andre

says. Models from high-end builders like Felt and Devinci are posed like modern sculptures in the uncluttered space. Though any shop will let you take a quick spin, Park City Bike Demos encourages you to lean into the experience. The Demo Center is at the heart of their business model. Here, you can check out a bike (or two... or four...) for a whole day and take it to the trails. Try out different styles of bike, from 29er to townie to e-bike. Up to $500 in rental fees can be used as a credit toward a bike purchase for six months from the date of your test ride. Or, if you fall in love with a bike, it’s easy to take your new objet d’amour home right away —they’ll even ship it home for you. The Demo Center’s location is perfect for trying out your new wheels. It’s a 10-minute ride from the easy trails of Round Valley or the double black diamond trails of Park City Mountain Resort. “You don’t even need a bike rack on your car,” Zak says. If you’re short on time or itching to hit singletrack, you can skip the shop altogether. Park City Bike Demos still maintains the fleet of trucks the business was built on. Their driver/mechanics will meet you at the trailhead or anywhere around town to get your rental perfectly fitted to your size and style. (Plus, they always bring bumping tunes and cold beers along with them.) But it’s after the sale is made that Park City Bike Demos’ conciergestyle service comes into play. “We don’t believe in the ‘one and done’ sale,” Zak says. “We provide multiple service days for every

customer to emulate that first-day experience.” You can stop by for a tune-up or a components upgrade, and enjoy an espresso drink while chatting with local cyclists. Or, for some big-screen inspiration, catch a broadcast of the Giro d’Italia, the Tour of Utah, or another cycling event in the Demo Center’s media area. F. Scott Fitzgerald once wrote, “There are no second acts in American lives.” That’s certainly not true for this all-American bike store, which has managed to both reinvent itself and stay true to its original vision. On your next trip to Park City, consider treating yourself to a handselected, custom-fitted ride... and enjoy the sense of community this unique shop has created while you’re there.
