Dimension humaine Si l’aérospatial reste l’activité phare deToulouse et sa région,d’autres talents,plus discrets,se font une place au soleil ! En témoignent le succès de l’Économie Sociale et Solidaire (ESS) en Occitanie (voir page 24).Cette nouvelle vision de l’économie, humaine, solidaire et responsable, portée par les associations, coopératives et mutuelles, est en plein essor. Elle a déjà créé 211 800 emplois, soit 16 % de l’emploi privé (+6 points sur la moyenne nationale).Autre exemple, du côté des arts cette fois, où l’on se distingue dans un domaine inattendu, le cirque (voir page 37). Avec des pôles de haut niveau et plus de 200 compagnies professionnelles en activité (soit près du tiers de celles recensées en France,leader européen),notre région est n° 1 du cirque contemporain en Europe ! Enfin, mais ça vous le savez peut-être déjà, les tables de grands Chefs abondent en Pyrénées-Méditerranée (voir page 30).Ils puisent leurs inspirations dans les innombrables richesses de terroirs gourmands qu’ils illuminent de leur étoiles Michelin.A chaque fois, c’est la dimension humaine qui fait la différence !

The human dimension While aerospace remains the Toulouse region’s flagship industry, other more discreet talents are also forging a place in the sun! One example is the social and solidarity economy in Occitanie (see page 24). This new vision of the economy – people-oriented, focusing on solidarity and responsibility, promoted by non-profit associations and cooperatives – is booming. It has already created 211,800 jobs, accounting for 16 percent of private employment (6 points above the national average). Another example is in the arts, where the region

stands out in a surprising area – the circus (see page 37). With top-level training establishments and over 200 professional troupes (nearly one third of those in France), our region is number one for contemporary circus in Europe! Finally, as you may already know, great chefs abound in the PyreneesMediterranean area (see page 30). They draw inspiration from the countless gourmet products of the terroirs that they illuminate with their Michelin stars. In each case, the human dimension makes the difference!

The 7th Festival des Étoiles et des Ailes, returns November 10-12, to Cité de l’Espace, Toulouse. Un Totem de la recherche, à Montaudran

L’imposant immeuble qui émerge au bord du périphérique sud de Toulouse, sur l’Aerospace Campus de Montaudran, est le « Totem » de la recherche de la filière aérospatiale. Cet ensemble (baptisé B 612 en clin d’œil au « Petit Prince ») de 24 500 m² pour 65,3 M€, a été conçu par le cabinet toulousain Kardham (Cardete et Huet). Il accueillera principalement l’IRT Saint-Exupéry (250 chercheurs) et le pôle mondial Aerospace Valley en 2018.

Research Totem in Montaudran

The imposing building now emerging near the south bypass of Toulouse, on the Montaudran Aerospace Campus represents an aerospace research «totem pole.» This complex (christened B 612, like the Little Prince’s planet) covering 24,500 m² at a cost of €65.3 M, designed by the French firm Kardham (Cardete and Huet), will primarily house IRT Saint-Exupéry (250 researchers) and the Aerospace Valley Competitiveness Cluster in 2018.

Ethics Village, biotope near the airport

Ethics Village is a one-of-a-kind link between business incubators and full autonomy. This «biotope» enables some fifteen start-ups to make the most of all the know-how of the Ethics consulting group (110 consultants) which launched this original initiative from its new headquarters in Blagnac, near the airport. The accepted start-ups will benefit from the philosophy of the Ethics Group which promotes the Good Company movement for virtuous and agile management. [ UPDATE ] L’Occitanie booste les start-up du tourisme

L’Open Tourisme Lab est le premier accélérateur de start-up dédié à l’innovation touristique. Lancé par la Région Occitanie et installé à Nîmes (Gard), c’est une composante du « Cap sur l’innovation touristique » qu’elle s’est fixé. Au 1er trimestre 2018, douze premières jeunes pousses déjà « viables » intégreront le Lab. Parallèlement se met en place le nouveau Comité régional du Tourisme (CRT) Occitanie, présent sur Toulouse et Montpellier. Il devra contribuer à « faire entrer l’Occitanie dans le Top 10 des régions touristiques d’Europe », selon la présidente de Région, Carole Delga (elle est actuellement 11e).

Occitanie boosts tourism start-ups

The Open Tourism Lab is the first start-up accelerator dedicated to innovative tourism. Launched by the Occitanie Region in Nîmes, Gard Department, it is a component of the Cap sur l’innovation Touristique program. In the first quarter of 2018, twelve healthy young companies will join the lab. Simultaneously the new Occitanie regional tourism committee is setting up in Toulouse and Montpellier. The Open Tourism Lab will contribute to «…bringing Occitanie into the top 10 of Europe’s tourist regions (currently 11th),« according to the President of the Region, Carole Delga.

Vin de Cahors

Une grande soufflerie pour réduire le bruit des avions L’Isae-Supaero vient d’inaugurer la plus grande soufflerie universitaire au monde sur son campus toulousain. Avec cet équipement de 9 M€, la grande école toulousaine d’ingénierie aérospatiale se hisse parmi les tout premiers centres mondiaux de recherche fondamentale en aéroacoustique. L’objectif est de réduire le bruit des avions en phase d’approche en testant des éléments jusqu’à 300 km/h, tels que les ailes ou les trains d’atterrissage.

Large wind tunnel to reduce aircraft noise

ISAE-SupAero has just inaugurated the largest university wind tunnel in the world on the Toulouse campus. The aerospace engineering school will leverage these €9-million facilities to become one the world’s leading centers of basic research in aeroacoustics. The goal is to reduce aircraft noise during the approach phase by testing components, such as wings or landing gear, at up to 300 km/h.

Toulouse’s touristic appeal has been confirmed. Thanks to a campaign of TV commercials with the message «Toulouse has everything,« attendance jumped in July and August: up 40% at Cité de l’Espace, up 20% for the Petit Train, Bateaux Toulousains and the Citytour bus, up 71% for the Pass sold by the tourist office, and the region is N° 1 on Twitter in France (@visiteztoulouse). The airport has broken records with a 24% increase in passengers and the occupancy rate for accommodations has climbed to 70% (up 6%).

A new auditorium has just opened in Cornebarrieu, north of Toulouse. With a capacity of 380 to 1,500 attendees (seated or standing), it will host in particular, singers, musicians and humorists from around the world. This wood-framed, 3,000 m² cultural complex in the eco-district of ZAC Monges, features an innovative raw earth bearing wall and has earned its architect, Philippe Madec, the Prix National de la Construction Bois.

Nina Goern et Yohan Hennequin, nous racontent, pour la première fois, la genèse et la création de ce disque déjà très attendu !

Ce premier album, « Cats On Trees », avait déjà tout : l’image forte d’un duo très complice, des tubes imparables... Nina : Et pourtant, le single qui a le mieux marché est celui que l’on a mis sur l’album en dernier ! C’était un disque de présentation, on disait : on est un garçon et une fille, on fait de jolies chansons, douces et mélancoliques... Yohan : On a été les premiers surpris par ce succès ! Ça signifiait que l’on pourrait continuer à faire de la musique, en vivre et prendre le temps, surtout, pour pouvoir faire un deuxième album. Rien n’était calculé. Nous voulions juste faire quelque chose qui nous ressemble. Vos clips, superbes, ont tourné en boucle. C’est important, ces vidéos, pour affirmer une image, un propos ? Yohan : Ce qui est important, c’est l’échange avec les gens avec lesquels on travaille, qui ont de belles idées, qui sont à l’écoute. Le clip de « Sirens Call » était lunaire, mais ce n’est pas nous qui avons demandé à tourner en Bolivie, dans le désert : on est parti à l’aventure ! On aime ces rencontres humaines qui enrichissent notre univers et permettent une lecture différente de qui nous sommes. Nina : Anna Bloom, qui a fait la pochette de l’album et les photos de presse, avait une vision très humaine, naturelle, organique et bienveillante. Elle a tout de suite cerné le projet et su l’illustrer. Elle est arrivée le premier jour avec plein de fleurs et a fait un truc très nature, simple. Nous voulions qu’il se dégage de la bienveillance, de la sympathie, qui illustre l’amitié que l’on a l’un pour l’autre.

"Something that reflects who we are" Four years after their first album sold 200,000 copies with the great songs Sirens Call and Jimmy, the Toulouse duo Cats On Trees is back with a new album, directed again by Pierre Rougean. Nina Goern and Yohan Hennequin tell us for the first time about the inspiration and creation of long-awaited album!

The first album, Cats On Trees, already had everything: the strong image of a very harmonized duo, and incomparable songs. Nina: And yet, the single which worked best is one that was added to the album last! It was a presentation disc, so to speak a boy and a girl doing pretty songs, kind of soft and melancholy... Yohan: We were as surprised by this success as anyone! It meant that we could continue to make music, live and take the time, above all, to be able to do a second album. Nothing was planned. We just wanted to do something that reflected who we are.

Your great clips have played over and over again. Are these videos important to impose an image, or make a statement? Yohan: The important thing is connecting with the people we work with, who have great ideas, who are listening. The clip of Sirens Call was kind of spacy, but it wasn’t our idea to film it in Bolivia, in the desert: we just went along for the adventure! We love these encounters that enrich our universe and give a different feeling for who we are. Nina: Anna Bloom, who made the cover of the album and press photos, had a very generous, natural, organic and benevolent vision. She immediately created a framework for

Pour ce deuxième album, avez-vous eu peur de ne pas retrouver la magie, la baraka mélodique du premier ? Nina : Non, car pas mal de chansons avaient été composées pendant le premier album. On ne s’est jamais arrêté. Ce qui est étrange, c’est que, comme une feuille qui change de couleur au gré des saisons, les morceaux ont changé. Il y a douze chansons sur l’album, et elles ont toutes eu des vies différentes. Le plus dur était de figer un morceau, se dire : « bon maintenant on arrête de le remanier », ça, on n’y arrivait pas ! Il ressemble à quoi, ce nouvel album ? Nina : Il est tout ce qu’il ne devait pas être au début ! Il partait pour être très électro, et finalement non ! Yohan : Il est très pop, très mélodique. C’est en essayant plein de choses que l’on a fini par retrouver qui on était vraiment. Il est assez acoustique, c’est vrai, mais avec de la modernité, pour compléter notre univers, le sublimer un peu. Il est assez riche, avec une énergie supplémentaire, et toujours cette mélancolie heureuse. Et des cordes... ça, on ne peut pas s’en empêcher ! Nina, en quoi est-il agréable de travailler avecYohan ? Nina : Je ne sais pas si c’est agréable de travailler avecYohan ! Yohan : Ah ben, merci ! [rires] Nina : C’est super de travailler avec une personne que tu connais par cœur. Il n’y a pas de barrière, et un immense respect mutuel. Je sais comment le blesser, donc je ne le ferai jamais et je sais que c’est pareil pour lui. Généralement on dit que les gens ne vous appartiennent pas, qu’ils ont leur vie... Mais de Yohan, qui n’est pas mon amoureux, je peux dire qu’il est la seule personne, avec mon fils et ma mère, avec qui je vais faire ma vie. Yohan, qu’apportez-vous à Nina ? Yohan : Je sers de catalyseur. En étant là, à l’écoute et bienveillant, j’aide à faire éclore un truc sublime. C’est cela qui m’a plu dès le début, en plus de sa gentillesse et sa générosité. Elle a un talent inné, une voix extraordinaire. Nina : Mais si je ne l’avais pas rencontré, jamais je n’aurais posé une seule note !

Vous avez participé à l’album hommage à Daniel Balavoine alors que votre nom est anglais, votre musique d’inspiration anglo-saxonne : était-ce un moyen d’affirmer un attachement à la chanson française ? Nina : La chanson de Balavoine, la première que nous chantions en français, nous l’avons faite à notre manière, à l’anglosaxonne. Il n’y a pas de barrière. Yohan : On chante en anglais parce que c’est ce qui vient naturellement quand on compose les mélodies. On reste ouvert au monde et à tout ce qui se fait en art en général, mais on est attaché et ancré dans notre pays, notre ville. On aime plein de choses en France, de Dominique A àVincent Delerm...

We wanted it to radiate kindness, and appeal, illustrating the friendship that we have for each other. You participated in the tribute album to Daniel Balavoine, but your name is English and your music has Anglo-Saxon inspiration – how was this a way to assert an attachment to French chanson? Nina: For Balavoine’s song, the first one we sang in French, we had our own approach, an Anglo-Saxon one. There’s no barrier. Yohan: We sing in English because that’s what comes naturally when we compose the melodies. We stay open to the world and everything happening in art in general, but it’s anchored in our country, our city. Like many things in France, from Dominique A to Vincent Delerm... For the second album, were you concerned about not finding the magic, the baraka melody of the first one?

Nina: No, because some songs were composed during the first album. We never stopped. The strange thing is that, like a leaf that changes color with the seasons, the songs have changed. There are twelve songs on the album, and they all had different lives. The hardest was to freeze a song, saying "Good, now we can stop revising" we couldn’t do that! What does this new album look like? Nina: It’s everything that it wasn’t supposed to be at the beginning! It was going to be very electro, but in the end, it wasn’t! Yohan: It’s very pop, very melodic. By trying lots of things we finally found who we really were. It is quite acoustic, really, but with modernity that completes our universe, enhances it a bit. It’s pretty rich, with extra energy, and always this kind of pleasant melancholy. And strings... that we can’t stop! Nina, In what way is it nice working with Yohan? Nina: I don’t know if it’s nice working with Yohan! Yohan: Hey, thanks a lot! [laughter]

There’s no barrier, real mutual respect. I know what would hurt him, so I would never do that, and I know it’s the same for him. Usually you say that people don’t belong to you, that they have their own lives... But, with Yohan, who is not my lover, I can say that he is the only person, in addition to my son and my mother, that I can build my life around. Yohan, what do you bring to Nina? Yohan: I’m a catalyst. By being there, listening and caring, I help something transcendent to blossom. That’s what appealed to me from the beginning, in addition to her kindness and generosity. She has an innate talent, an extraordinary voice. Nina: But if I hadn’t met him, I would never have produced a single note! Your photos and concerts demonstrate understanding, tenderness. Do you ever argue? Nina: It’s never long, but it does hurt a lot. I hate it, but it’s also good, because sometimes it has to come out, since we’re together all the time, it’s healthy.

Yohan: It hurts because we love each other a lot - it’s very short. So we work it out, we move back towards each other, we go out to a restaurant, we never spend two days in a state of distress, it’s not possible, we couldn’t go on in parallel. What is your favorite song on the new album? Nina: It’s hard... I would say Lion, which was composed a long time ago, which we played on stage in the second part of the tour. It was recorded live but that didn’t work. And finally, from one day to the next, from being a pretty energeticpiece, it turned into a soft ballad... Yohan: I like Black Lips for its freshness. This is an old electro tune that turned into something else, it’s weird... The chorus was created in the middle of the night. It has a soul, a kind of cobbled together aspect which is lovely. It was kind of inspired by Kurosawa’s film Dreams. In one of his dreams, the narrator buries his first love and then there’s a great party in the village. Strangely, this is very positive, a beautiful hymn to life!

Sur les photos, en concert, on voit une complicité, une tendresse.Vous arrive-t-il de vous disputer ? Nina : Ça ne dure jamais longtemps, mais cela fait énormément mal. J’ai horreur de ça, mais ça fait aussi du bien, car il faut parfois que ça sorte, on est tellement tout le temps ensemble, c’est sain. Yohan : Ça fait mal car on s’aime beaucoup, c’est très bref. On s’explique, on va vers l’autre, on se fait un resto, on ne peut pas rester deux jours dans un état de mal-être, c’est pas possible, on ne peut plus vivre à côté. Quelle est votre chanson préférée sur le nouvel album ? Nina : C’est difficile... Je dirais « Lion », qui a été composée il y a longtemps, que l’on a jouée sur scène en deuxième partie de la tournée. On l’a enregistrée en « live » mais ça ne marchait pas. Et finalement, du jour au lendemain, d’un morceau assez énergique, elle est passée à une ballade toute douce... Yohan : J’aime « Black Lips » pour sa fraîcheur. C’est un vieux couplet électro qui s’est transformé en autre chose, c’est bizarre... Le refrain est né en pleine nuit. Il a une âme, un côté bricolé qui est charmant. Il m’a un peu été inspiré par le film « Rêves », de Kurosawa : dans un de ses rêves, le narrateur enterre son premier amour et c’est une belle fête dans le village. Étrangement, c’est très positif, un bel hymne à la vie ! [[

Et ça marche. L’ESS représente plus de 10 % de l’emploi en France, soit 2,37 millions de salariés.Une progression de plus 25 % en 15 ans.L’Occitanie est en pointe avec 211 800 emplois, soit 16 % de l’emploi privé, ce qui place la région au 3e rang national. Les pouvoirs publics ont pris la mesure du phénomène, la Région et les métropoles intègrent l’ESS dans leurs schémas de développement économique et proposent aux porteurs de projets accompagnement, incubateurs et aides financières.

A treasure for Occitanie The social and solidarity economy, long considered to be a fringe phenomenon, is now taking its place in Occitanie, as a vision of a generous, responsible economy expressing solidarity.

I

nitiatives are multiplying to produce, consume, and create wealth by placing people, rather than profit at the core of operations. Companies, associations and cooperatives innovate to mobilize a different vision of the economy which is collaborative, participatory, and civic minded. The project first And it works. This "fourth sector" represents more than 10% of the employment in France, for a total of 2.37 million employees. This is an increase of over 25% in 15 years. Occitanie is at the cutting edge, with 211,800 jobs, or 16 percent of private employment, placing the region in third place nationally. Governments are taking note of the phenomenon, as the Region and cities integrate the fourth sector into their economic development plans and offer project leaders guidance, business incubators and financial aid. "A social economy company is defined first and foremost by its vision of society rather than its legal structure", says Lucie Parnaudeau, of Mouve, a network of a hundred entrepreneurs in the region.

ÂŤ Il n’y avait pas de boulot pour nos jeunes, alors on a dĂŠcidĂŠ d’en crĂŠer Âť, raconte le père Bernard Berthuit, l’un des fondateurs. L’entreprise a connu une ĂŠclatante rĂŠussite : elle est devenue la première SCOP de France, avec 3 200 salariĂŠs rĂŠpartis sur 80 sites ! Scopelec, qui rĂŠalise des rĂŠseaux tĂŠlĂŠcommunication, a multipliĂŠ son chiffre d’affaires par dix, en dix ans (400 mâ‚Ź).

An "old model" that’s very modern! Following this type of roadmap in 1973, Scopelec, a SCOP (workers’ production cooperative) in Revel, Haute-Garonne, was created. "There were no jobs for our young people, so we decided to create some", says Father Bernard Berthuit, one of the founders. The company has achieved resounding success, becoming the largest SCOP in France, with 3,200 employees at 80 sites! Scopelec, which builds telecommunication networks, has increased its revenues tenfold in ten years (₏400 M). "The cooperative project that we promote is still the same, based on a point of view and societal values that have not changed, i.e. people are always at the center of the system", says Pierre-Yves Fargeas, member of the Executive Board. Lauréate d’un appel d’offres de la Région, elle a bénéficié de 100 000 €, l’équivalent de la collecte auprès de 93 sociétaires. « On se charge des installations et du suivi, explique BenjaminToullec. Quatre toitures vont être équipées en panneaux solaires, 15 sont prévues en 2018. C’est une façon pour les citoyens de se réapproprier le système énergétique et de créer de l’emploi via des fournisseurs locaux. » Autre initiative originale, la création d’habitats en bois, modulables, démontables, transportables. Depuis deux ans, l’associationToi et Compagnie travaille sur la R & D et entre maintenant en phase de commercialisation, après avoir levé 265 000 €. « Nous allons passer en SCIC dès 2018 et structurer l’atelier de production pour lancer ce produit innovant, qui allie technologie et social, précise CloéVienot, responsable du projet. La fabrication est réalisée par un chantier d’insertion et nous sommes en lien avec des bailleurs sociaux très intéressés par ce concept écologique et bioclimatique. Combining technology and social action "The movement is progress and the momentum is strong", says Bérénice Dondeyme, Co-Chair of ADEPES, the agency for development and promotion of the solidarity economy in Occitanie. "It is supported by many young people who want to live and work in a different way, as well as by those over 50 who have lost their jobs or are in retraining. The public tools exist and even the banking system is rather supportive." And innovation is at work, as illustrated by Benjamin Toullec, who has just created Citoy’Enr, a cooperative enterprise (SCIC), which collects citizens’ savings to finance the production of renewable energy. The company won a Regional Council tender and has benefited from €100,000, matching the funds of its 93 members. "We are in charge of installation and follow-up," says Benjamin Toullec. "Four roofs will be equipped with solar panels, with fifteen scheduled for 2018. It’s a way for citizens to reclaim the energy system and to create employment through local suppliers." Another original initiative is the creation of portable, modular, wooden housing units that are easily assembled and dismantled. For two years, the association Toi et Compagnie has been working on R&D and is now entering the marketing phase, after having raised €265,000. "We will transform into an SCIC in 2018 and organize our production workshop to launch this innovative product which combines technology and social action", says Cloé Viennot, project manager. "Production takes place through a re-training program and we are in discussions with social investors interested in this ecological, bioclimatic concept. Later, we will explore a range suitable for guest houses or campsites." A promising ecosystem Examples of the diversity and inventiveness of the social and solidarity economy in the region include an eco-designed, durable and repairable umbrella in Ariège (Artibatem), a garden center that offers a range of 100% natural, organic products in HauteGaronne (Terralba), repair of used appliance and professional rehabilitation (Envie Midi-Pyrénées), places to welcome and assist seniors in the Gers, employee acquisition of an artisanal ice cream factory in the Aude (La Fabrique du Sud, Belle Aude brand), and an equitation-therapy institute for people with disabilities in the Gard. The social and solidarity economy can rely on a growing number of local currencies that have flourished in the area over the past decade. This trend results from the need to re-localize trade and not feed global speculative tendencies, by purchasing and consuming locally. The Sol Violette offers an example in Toulouse. This was a pioneer currency in France, launched in 2011 and used today by more than 2,400 people, known as «soloists» and 225 suppliers of food, commerce, culture, transport, and housing. After paying a fee of €15 to the Sol Violette association, users can convert euros into Sols through Crédit Coopératif, or Crédit Municipal, or use them to recharge a payment card. With the support of City Hall, Sol Violette hopes to gain new followers, especially among the young.

mateurs de jonglage, magie, jeux équilibristes et acrobaties en tous genres, bienvenue en Occitanie ! La région compte plus de 200 compagnies de cirque professionnel en activité, sur les 600 à 700 compagnies installées en France. Sachant que l’Hexagone est leader en matière de développement du cirque contemporain, on serait même tenté de dire que l’Occitanie est la région n° 1 en Europe en la matière. Mais d’où vient cette histoire d’amour entre notre région et les arts du cirque ? Une « révolution » appuyée dès ses origines

Les raisons sont multiples. La première est liée à une volonté politique : en 1979, le cirque passe de la compétence du ministère de l’Agriculture (pour le contrôle vétérinaire des animaux « sauvages ») au ministère de la Culture. Le but est alors de venir appuyer des entreprises de cirque traditionnel en proie à des difficultés économiques. Mais les pouvoirs publics mettent également en place des formations pour une génération d’artistes et de créateurs tournés vers le « Nouveau Cirque », plutôt sans animaux. Durant cette époque de renouveau, la région compte déjà deux écoles à la renommée nationale, voire au-delà… Le Pop Circus, à Auch, qui a fêté ses 40 ans en 2015, est une école « amateurs » dont beaucoup ont fait carrière par la suite. Quant au Lido, àToulouse, son histoire, débutée en 1983, fut marquée par le volontarisme et la vision de son directeur, Henri Guichard, disparu en 2009.Vingt ans plus tard, le Lido, qui abrite deux filières (amateur et pro), a pris ses quartiers sous un chapiteau en dur

The extended Occitanie region has two national centers of the circus arts (in Auch and Ales), and this has long been a land hospitable to the creation and performance of circus acts. In Toulouse meets with regional players who promote the circus cause.

ans of juggling, magic, balancing acts and acrobatics of all kinds, welcome to Occitanie! The region has more than 200 active, professional circus troupes out of 600 to 700 in France. And since France is a leader in the development of contemporary circus arts, it is tempting to say that Occitania is the N° 1 region in Europe in this discipline. But where did this love story between our region and the circus begin? A «Revolution» that got support from the start There are many reasons. The first is related to political determination: in 1979, the responsibility for circuses was transferred from the Ministry of Agriculture (for veterinary control of «wild» animals) to the Ministry of

Culture. The goal was to support traditional circus professions, which were plagued by economic difficulties. But the government also established training programs for a generation of artists and creators turned towards the «new circus» which tended to have no animals. During this period of renewal, the region already had two schools with national reputations, and even beyond... The Pop Circus in Auch, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2015, is an «amateur» school from which many graduates have gone on to develop professional careers. As for the Lido, in Toulouse, its history, starting in 1983, has been marked by determination and the vision of its director, Henri Guichard (who passed away in 2009). dans l’est toulousain. Il abrite une salle de spectacles de plus de 300 places et des salles d’entraînement aux diverses disciplines : fil, acrobatie, jonglerie… Des « ports d’attache » aux quatre coins de la région

« Beaucoup d’artistes qui n’étaient pas de la région sont venus s’y former et, contrairement à d’autres endroits, ils y sont restés. Un professionnel de cirque est itinérant, mais il aime également avoir un camp de base en basse saison, avec des espaces pour pratiquer, rencontrer et échanger avec des artistes. Le climat aidant, cela crée un vivier constamment renouvelé », explique Marc Fouilland, directeur du CIRCa (Auch). Le CIRCa est l’un des deux Pôles nationaux Cirque de la région Occitanie avec laVerrerie d’Alès.Ces deux structures ont pour mission d’accompagner au sens large (coproductions, aide à la diffusion, accueil en résidences…) des compagnies et artistes.Au CIRCa, une quarantaine d’entre elles est accueillie sur place durant la saison.A chaque rentrée, la capitale gasconne – où la troupe d’Achille Zavatta a longtemps posé ses valises et répété ses spectacles – accueille aussi le ‘Festival du Cirque Actuel’qui réunit les écoles de cirque locales et des artistes du monde entier. Bref, l’histoire et le maillage territorial favorisent un ancrage régional fort pour une pratique à vocation internationale. « La spécificité de la région est d’avoir développé un modèle d’artisteauteur, et pas seulement interprète, qui a essaimé par la suite et a surtout attiré des élèves venus de toute la planète. "Mar a Mar" is a Franco-Spanich cross-border project supported by the European Union. Coordinated by the La Grainerie, in Toulouse, it brings together 14 partners - municipalities, theatres, and training establishments, on both sides of the Pyrenees: the Basque Country, Aragón, and Catalonia (another great region for circus traditions). Its purpose is to support performers, including those striving to emerge, and help them find opportunities beyond the Pyrenees and the borders of their countries.

tracks, set up its big top and headquarters in the eastern section of Toulouse. It has a theatre with over 300 seats and training rooms for the various disciplines, including highwire walking, acrobatics and juggling. From base camps to the four corners of the region «A lot of performers from elsewhere have come to train here and many have stayed. A professional circus is itinerant, but also needs to have a base camp during the low season to practice, meet other performers and exchange ideas. The mild climate here has helped to create a constantly renewed talent pool,« says Marc Fouilland, Director of CIRCa in Auch, one of the two national circus complexes of the Occitanie region with the La Verrière in Alès. These two organizations are designed to support troupes and performers in the broadest sense (co-productions, help with programming, in-house residence programs, etc.). At CIRCa, some forty performers are welcomed at the site during the season. Each fall, the city of Auch – where Achille Zavatta’s troupe has spent many seasons and rehearses their shows – also welcomes the Festival du Cirque Actuel, which brings together local circus schools and performers from around the world. In short, history and the territorial network promote strong regional roots for an international calling. "The region’s originality results from having developed a model of performer-

authors, and not just interpreters. The model has subsequently spread and attracted students from all over the world. Our establishments provide a home base for many performers," points out Serge Borras, Director of the La Grainerie theatre in Toulouse which houses a gym and workshop areas. Each year, 450 circus people spend some time in its facilities. Half of them are from this region and a quarter are international. The nearby Lido school welcomed 350 amateur performers and 42 professionals continuously in 2016 – 2017, and the international proportion is even higher, accounting for nearly twothirds of the residents. Creating a complete sector To encourage creation, training and to find performance opportunities, all of these large organizations (CIRCa, Grainerie, Lido, Verrière d’Alès) work together. n garçon de 10 ans s’élance sur le trampoline.Sourire radieux, le bambin enchaîne les saltos avant. « Je viens au Trampoline Park tous les mercredis », se justifie t-il. Il n’est pas le seul à avoir pris ses habitudes ici. Un groupe de quarantenaires en tenues de basket se dirige vers la Hoops Factory toute proche,alors que deux jeunes femmes pénètrent dans la salle d’escalade Block Out. En quelques années, c’est tout un pôle sportif indoor qui s’est développé sur la ZAC Garonne, aux Sept-Deniers.Venu des États-Unis,le sport en salle est particulièrement en pointe dans l’agglomération où certaines disciplines, inédites en France, sont apparues récemment.

A group of forty-somethings in basketball uniforms head for the Hoops Factory nearby, while two young women enter the Block Out climbing gym. Over the past few years, an entire indoor-sports cluster has developed at ZAC Garonne in the Sept Deniers neighborhood. Indoor sports, originally a US trend, has become particularly popular here, where some disciplines, previously unknown in France, have recently sprung up. Baby indoor sports Invitations for birthdays at UrbanSoccer and Laser Game are a new trend! Children are the main users of these new rooms. With 3,000 m2, lots of trampolines and a pit with 16,000 foam cubes, Trampoline Park is a favorite destination for young athletes. We have a room to celebrate birthday parties, and children are very enthusiastic users, but adults come too, especially in the evening, says manager Julien Samana. Kids from the age of 5, supervised by monitors, really go for it. And their parents can also join in if they wish. At Solo Escalade, parents and children can also come together during courses on the climbing wall. Youngsters love indoor soccer and the crazy experience of bubble soccer. Even the little ones are welcome in these indoor spaces. At C l’Aventure, babies just a year old can take advantage of a mega play area with a rubber ball pit, rope tunnels and a track for fun races on balance bikes without pedals. Sports for everyone Many people want the pleasures of sports without the constraints of enrolling in a club, or diligent, regular training sessions. To meet such demands, the Beach Park in Tournefeuille, France’s leading sand sports complex, opened a few months ago. We started with the

observation that it’s difficult to combine the constraints of working life with playing rugby in a club. So we created this complex where you can come and play as you like, says Mathieu Labat of the Beach Park. Here, there’s no pressure, just game areas with sand, like at the beach, and the opportunity to book a slot with friends to play rugby, soccer, volleyball, tennis or badminton. It gives you sports facilities without restrictions, where the emphasis is on the friendly, fun aspect, and you can have a drink after a game, or play ping-pong, says Mathieu Labat. Whether you book ahead or at the last moment, you can try out a range of sporting activities, even for beginners. In addition to a dozen indoor soccer rooms, Toulouse has many climbing rooms where beginners can have fun thanks to automatic winders. You can also try your hand at original disciplines, such as trampoline fitness, indoor karting or the combined course of biking and yoga. The 30-minute biking session is followed by 40 minutes of dynamic yoga to work on loosening and stretching, says Xavier Verbeke of Happyness Cycling. Stay warmed up For more comfort in winter or for practical reasons, regular athletes also indulge in indoor sports. Many indoor clubs operate on the same principles as outdoor clubs, with competition as a goal in common! As for soccer, some even aim for the big leagues; for example UJS Union des Jeunes Sportifs de Toulouse plays in Futsal League 2! The Classico Foot room offers tournaments and for those who want to maintain a competitive spirit, a Championship which takes place every Monday night, says Paco Lane, the Manager. Pour sa 31e édition qui se déroule jusqu’au 22 octobre, le festival Jazz sur son 31 organise 65 événements avec 317 artistes invités ! [ Joëlle Porcher

omme tous les ans,ce festival offre une programmation éclectique accueillant des artistes confirmés du monde entier et de jeunes espoirs du jazz, notamment le pianiste Fred Nardin, prix Django Reinhardt 2016. Le cœur du festival bat dans la cour du Conseil départemental, àToulouse, sous un chapiteau où de nombreux concerts à petits prix (5 €) se tiennent à partir de 18 h 30. C’est l’occasion de se mettre en appétit en écoutant par exemple Philippe Selam, Julien Alour, Frédéric Monino, Claudia Solal,Wallace Roney… C’est là également que l’on entendra des musiciens venus de La Havane, l’une des thématiques de ce 31e festival : quatre soirées sont dédiées au jazz cubain, avec, entre autres, Harold Lopez-Nussa et Rolando Luna qui incarnent le nouveau son de La Havane. D’autres concerts ont lieu dans divers lieux du département : Contreband revisite Georges Brassens au Burgaud,Wax’In joue à Tournefeuille, Sixtet Jazz à Aucamville. Parmi les têtes d’affiche, on verraYoun Sun Nah. Cette jeune pianiste, coréenne de naissance et française d’adoption, fait son retour sur scène avec « She Moves On ». Elle exploite un répertoire varié avec des reprises folk et rock, mais interprète aussi des compositions originales (16 et 17 octobre à Odyssud, à Blagnac). Kyle Eastwood, le fils de Clint, a enregistré son dernier album près de Paris et entamé une tournée française. Il invite pour son spectacle à Altigone (St-Orens) le contrebassiste Stefano Di Battista (20 octobre). Havana in the spotlight The 31st festival of Jazz sur son 31 presents 65 events with 317 guest performers, through October 22.

s always, this festival offers a wide-ranging program, welcoming worldrenowned performers and young hopefuls of jazz, including the pianist Fred Nardin, winner of the 2016 Django Reinhardt award. The festival, based in a big-top tent in the courtyard of the Departmental Council, in Toulouse, presents a host of concerts at the modest price of €5, starting at 6:30 pm. These excellent warmup acts include Philippe Selam, Julien Alour, Frédéric Monino, Claudia Solal, and Wallace Roney. Musicians from Havana will also play here, expressing one of the themes of this 31st festival, with four evenings dedicated to Cuban jazz, featuring among others, Harold Lopez-Nussa and Rolando Luna who embody the new Havana sound. Other concerts will take place in various venues

throughout the Department: Contreband revisits Georges Brassens in Burgaud, while Wax’In performs at Tournefeuille, and Sixtet Jazz in Aucamville. This fall a host of comedy stars bring plenty of laughs to theatres throughout Toulouse. On October 21, you’ll have the choice between Pierre Emmanuel Barré at Altigone in St Orens in a ferocious, politically incorrect show, and Christophe Alévêque, who doesn’t handle politicians or the media very gently either, at the 3T in Toulouse. On October 31, the Casino Barrière welcomes Quebec comic Rachid Badouri, all charged up and ready to go. On November 7, the popular Ch’ti Dany Boon will be at the Zenith in a show staged by Isabelle Nanty. How do children develop their senses and learn to understand the real world? The new exhibition at the Quai des Savoirs invites children between the ages of 2 and 7 into a world at their own height, the Mondo Minot. They follow the adventures of Lilian and Capucine who open a magical wardrobe in their room. Through it, the young visitors enter the worlds of Life, Sleep, Light and Virtuality. At each phase, the children mobilize their five senses to grasp the concepts. They travel, experiment, touch, listen and observe. A cozy yurt takes them to the land of Sleep and Dreams. Le miel de l’aéroport

Délice sucré au bord des pistes L’aéroport de Toulouse-Blagnac s’est associé à un apiculteur local pour accueillir 80 ruches sur son territoire dans le cadre de ses actions en matière de Responsabilité sociétale des entreprises (RSE). Les abeilles appréciant le lieu, la commercialisation du miel d’aéroport « Ciel et Miel » sera lancée au printemps prochain.

e projet est le fruit d’une longue réflexion avec un apiculteur et l’école vétérinaire de Purpan,àToulouse,sur la place de l’abeille en milieu aéroportuaire. Nous voulions montrer qu’un aéroport urbain, tel que le nôtre, peut accueillir des abeilles, leur offrir un cadre de vie adapté à la reproduction et produire un miel de qualité », explique Jean-MichelVernhes, président du Directoire de l’aéroport. L’aéroport a donc mis à la disposition de Jean-Claude Chibarie, l’apiculteur partenaire, une zone au bord des pistes pour ses ruches et 30 000 m2 de terrains à ensemencer à proximité.Objectif à l’horizon 2022 :une abeille par passager de l’aéroport.Soit 200 ruches et 9 millions d’abeilles ! En avril dernier, les premières abeilles ont élu domicile à l’aéroport et force est de constater qu’elles s’y plaisent.En effet,malgré sa complexité,l’expérience se révèle concluante avec une forte production du précieux nectar. L’apiculteur peut donc envisager de vendre son « miel aéroport » dans les boutiques de l’aérogare. Les analyses réalisées sur les premières récoltes soulignent la qualité du miel. Des résultats qui confortent les études déjà menées sur les implantations de ruches en aéroports, et dont le miel répond aux exigences de la réglementation européenne.Les passagers de la plateforme pourraient donc bientôt déguster en toute sérénité du miel fabriqué à deux battements d’ailes de leur avion. Airport honey

Sweet treat along the runway The Toulouse-Blagnac Airport has joined forces with a local beekeeper to accommodate 80 hives on its territory, as part of its corporate social responsibility actions. The bees are enjoying the spot and the airport honey will be marketed as Ciel et Miel (sky and honey), starting next spring.

T

his project results from long discussions with a beekeeper and the Purpan veterinary school of Toulouse, concerning the place of bees in the airport environment. "We wanted to show that an urban airport, such as ours, can welcome bees, providing a living environment suitable for reproduction and capable of producing honey of quality", says Jean-Michel Vernhes, Chairman of the Board of the airport. The airport therefore made an area at the edge of the runways available to Jean-Claude Chibarie, the beekeeper partner, for his hives along with 30,000 m2 of nearby land to be planted. The goal for 2022 is to accommodate a number of bees equal to the airport’s yearly passenger traffic, in other words, 9 million bees in 200 hives! Last April, the first bees took up residence at the airport and they clearly thrive there. Despite the complexity, this experiment is proving to be conclusive with a good yield of the precious sweet. The beekeeper can therefore consider selling his "airport honey" in the shops within the air terminal. Analyses of the first harvests have demonstrated the quality of the honey. These results reinforce previous studies of hives located at airports, with honey that meets European regulatory standards. Airport users will soon be able to enjoy honey produced a short beeline away from the wings of their aircraft.
