Spring in full swing - April gardening

M

id spring is a wonderful explosion of colour and scent. If you want rainbow colours, tulips will provide that wow factor. Tulips will often come up each year provided they have fertile well drained soil and a sunny position. Most tulips dislike heavy wet soil and you will need to replant with new each year in these conditions. Planting in pots gives a stunning display and you can select different types to give flowers over a period of weeks. For something more delicate in a woodland spot you can plant Epimediums with their tiny pale yellow or pink blooms in early spring. You will only see the flowers and the new leaves if you cut off last year’s foliage. It will cover the ground under trees and gradually spreads. Another good woodland edge plant is the Brunnera with green, cream and silvery foliage. However at this time of year they also have bright blue forget me not flowers. If it is scent that you are looking for then I would plant Osmanthus delavayi or Osmanthus burkwoodii in your garden – maybe next to the Winter Box (Sarcococca) that I recommend for winter scent. The former is a smaller shrub and the latter larger but both have glossy green leaves with white scented flowers in mid spring. April is a good month to sow seeds or hardy annuals such as Marigolds, Stock, Nasturtiums and Clary. On the vegetable front you should be planting out your chitted potatoes in trenches with lots of compost or well rotted manure in the base to give a good crop. Salad seeds can be sown and Runner beans and French beans. If you want to grow lilies then plant in April in well drained fertile soil or John Innes No3 compost with added grit in pots. Lilies will come back each year if grown in the garden, unless we have a really severe winter, so don’t think of them as tender plants, they are tougher then you think! I also give all my plants a feed with a slow release balanced fertilizer such as Growmore in March or April. Roses need more regular feeding throughout the season so use a specific Rose fertilizer for healthy plants. Janet Heath Garden Mentor 01244 318258/07984 627270

ACUPUNCTURE AND THE TREATMENT OF ALLERGIC RHINITIS Allergic rhinitis affects about 10-40% of the population, and can have a substantial health and economic impact on the community. The condition can affect several organ systems, and cause many symptoms, typically: sneezing, nasal itching, nasal blockage and watery nasal discharge. Other symptoms include, red eyes, itchy eyes, tearing, coughing and wheezing. Allergic rhinitis, may impair quality of life, interfering with work, sleep and recreational activities. How can Acupuncture help? Evidence from systematic reviews suggests that Acupuncture can be a safe and effective treatment for Allergic rhinitis. Acupuncture can help to relive pain and congestion in people with allergic rhinitis by: ● Stimulationg nerves located in muscles and other tissues, which lead to the release of endorphins and other neurohumoral factors, and changes the process of pain in the brain and spinal cord. ● Reducing the inflammation. ● Increasing local circulation, which aids the dispersal of local swelling. Night Sky in April 2015 Venus shines brilliantly in the western evening sky for about 1 hour after twilight. Mars will be visible low in the west after sunset. The Moon will appear close to Mars on the 19th. Jupiter will be well placed for observation as it will be almost due south once the sky gets dark after sunset. It is the constellation of Cancer close to a naked eye star cluster called the Beehive. The Moon will be close by on 25th and 26th April. Saturn is a morning object low down in the south. The Moon is close by on the 8th April. The meteor shower known as the Lyrids will be active between the 16th and 22nd of April. The Moon is almost new and sets quite soon on these dates so there is a fair chance to see this minor shower. On the 20th April the Moon will set by 22.30 so the meteors are viewed best after midnight. Expect about 20 shooting stars per hour – based on the past 10 years of observation. Mercury is almost in line with the Sun and so is unsuitably placed for observers in the UK this month Geoff Chamberlain

A quick, easy recipe for Easter, courtesy of Philip Martin of Cheshire Cooks

Sizzling Prawns,

With Garlic, Chilli and Olive Oil Ingredients 750g Raw Unpeeled Prawns 8 Garlic Cloves 5g Flat-Leaf Parsley Leaves 300ml Olive Oil 2 Teaspoon Crushed Dried Chilli Flakes or 4 Small Dried Piri-piri Chillies Salt Crusty Fresh Bread

Method Peel the prawns, leaving the last tail segment in place. Put the garlic and parsley leaves onto a chopping board, sprinkle with ½ teaspoon of salt and chop together into a coarse mixture. Pour the oil into a large, deep frying pan and place over a low heat. As soon as it is hot, add the chilli flakes or whole dried chillies and the garlic and parsley mixture and cook gently, stirring for 2-3 minutes until the garlic is sizzling and fragrant. Increase the heat to medium, add the prawns and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring until just cooked through. Season with a little more salt to taste and serve with slices of crusty bread.

Polly - The Blogging Boxer ........ We was Robbed!!!! Well, Sam and I thought we had it sussed – you know that eclipse thingy. We thought, from what they were saying on the telly that it would go dark and that can only mean one thing to us dogs – it’s supper time! But what happened? It just went a bit dingy. And that was that, talk about an anticlimax! Sam couldn’t get over it, he walked around huffing and puffing and looking sad as only us Boxers can. Well, I’ve news to cheer him up. It’s Easter soon and all the tribe are coming including Belle, Edward, Max and Alfie. So, thirteen bodies and six dogs! Good job we’ve got a really big field to play in. I thought you might like to see a picture of us, well minus Edward, who’d be in the kitchen going over the floor and empty bowls just in case a smidgen of food had been missed. I tell you what, if that re-incarnation stuff is true, then Edward will come back as a scouring pad. Love Polly xxx

SPRING ACTIVITY: CROPS As soon as the ground is dry enough, compost from the Gowy Landfill site is due to be spread on many of the fields. It provides grass and crops with essential minerals and nutrients and, over time, greatly improves the soil structure and helps to build the humus content of the soil, and helps to provide an increasing worm population which is vital for healthy soils. Gradually this process makes our soils more resistant to extremes of weather. The soil structure improves, encouraging plants to root more deeply thus making them more resistant to drought. The soil also becomes more freely draining, thus making it less likely to become waterlogged during very wet periods. The land next to The Street and Picton Lane which will be used to grow barley is then ploughed and the new crop drilled and rolled. 40

VW’S NEW PASSAT ESTATE

Driving with David Parry-Jones

The new 62mpg VW Passat is European Car of the Year 2015, recognisable as a Passat but now with 2015 mechanics and thinking. MODEL: VW Passat Estate ENGINE: 1,968cc 16v diesel PRICE: £26,735 (starts £23,745) POWER: 150PS @ 3,500rpm TORQUE: 340Nm@1,750rtpm

EMISSIONS: 116g/km 0-62: In 8.9 seconds FUEL: 64.2mpg average OUT OF 100: 95

WE’VE been teased about the new Passat for months and, after being among the very first to test it, I’m delighted to report it’s so 2015 and just gorgeous. So you won’t be surprised it is the ‘2015 European Car of the Year’. CLEAN ‘AND’ GREEN ~ Sleek, powerful, spacious and - in 2.0-litre diesel form - really economic at a claimed 64.2 mpg; ultra clean for a big engine at 116g/km and more than adequate with150bhp of power at 3,500rpm plus a huge 340Nm of torque from 1,750rpm. EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS ~ It’s every bit as good as leaked bits of information claimed it would be, both inside and out. And inside Passat really is very 2015! Its SatNav and information screen sits amid a matt finished aluminium dash, with a minimal number of switches. HOLDS YOU ON HILLS ~ At this £26,735 SE business class level, the 4.76m long and 2.08m wide Passat boasts a leather steering wheel, an electronic ‘hold’ brake, keyless starting, a top speed of 134mph and a richly bass DAB radio. ALL YOU COULD WANT ~ How come when VW replaces a model, does it manage to always set the styandard for the competition? This new Passat estate has everything you could possibly want, all the modern technology and bluetooth-USB connections, the comfiest of seats and when you switch off, it even flashes a message to take your phone with you! 2.0 DIESEL BEST SELLER ~ I was testing what I’m told will be the best selling will be the bestselling 2.0-ltre TDI, but in sensible estate form, as you get 586-litres of boot space even with the rear seats up. Estates average £1,530 more than saloons. MORE VARIANTS COMING ~ Diesel only from launch, a Blue Motion version will be launched this June, an AllTrack estate in July and a GTE plug-in hybrid version, with a 1.4-litre TSI engine plus electric motor, in October. Currfently there are an amazing 24 variants in the new 2015 Passat range. SO QUIET, SO SMOOTH ~ It’s on the road that new Passat will win you over. Travel is so simple, so quiet and so smooth. The suspension is close to perfect and cornering simply brilliant. All controls fall to hand and the radio is as good as you will ever had heard. LUXURIOUS INTERIOR ~ The interior in leather is luxurious and oh so comfortable. You not only feel safe, but are - with curtain airbags front and rear; front and rear seat side impact airbags; outer front seat airbags; driver’s knee airbag, front active head restraints, plus ABS, EBD and ESC. NEW CAR’S 85KG LIGHTER ~ The new 85kg lighter Passat comes in five trim levels, S, SE, SE Business, GT and R-Line. all with post-collision braking and mis-fuelling prevention. On the SE and above all get front assist, adaptive cruise control that works a treat, a passive pre-crash system and clever ‘Discover Navigation’ on the SE Business I tested. FLEETS WILL LOVE IT ~ And new Passat has a proud heritage with 7,695 Passat saloons, 9,441 Passat estates and 5,480 CC models sold during 2013. VW believes four fifths of of the 2.0-litre 150PS Passat will go to fleet buyers and that estates will again outsell saloons. LINKS YOU TO THE WEB ~ Snapping Passat into 2015, is a ‘Car Net’ connection to the internet via a smartphone wi-fi hotspot, giving you traffic data, news and weather on the move via your touchscreen infotainment system. ANY BAD POINTS ~ This is one car in which I completed 420 miles and didn’t come across anything negative. It provided a comfortable, relaxing drive, coupled to speedy acceleration and seriously good space and comfort. 44

YOUR PEREGRINES NEED YOU

In 2008 three peregrine chicks were stolen from their nest at Beeston Castle. Since then a 24/7 watch has been mounted during their breeding season (which is usually April/May/June) when they successfully raised four chicks in 2014. We are looking for volunteers in order that we can maintain our 24 hour coverage which generally involves four hour shifts. California Dreaming From towering redwood forests in Northern California to the sun-kissed surf beaches in Southern California, this Golden State has lots to offer. California is older than it seems after unchecked 19th-century mining, logging and oil-drilling threatened to undermine the state’s natural splendours, environmentalists rescued old-growth trees and spurred the creation of national and state parks that still amaze visitors today. Make your escape from the hustle and bustle and cruise the coast in the slow lane. California’s coastal highways wind past sea cliffs and dozens of beach towns. Pacific Coast Highway as it is known connects the between major coastal cities: San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco. In between, you’ll uncover hidden beaches and surf breaks, rustic seafood shacks dishing up the day’s freshest catch and wooden seaside piers for catching sunsets over boundless Pacific horizons. Fabulous Food & Drink - California produces most of the fresh produce in the US, every time they sit down to eat, Californians take in organic, spray-free, farm-to-table and garden-grown. But no matter what you order, it’s likely to be local and creative, in addition California produces over 90% of the nation’s wine-making grapes, and has twice as many breweries as any other state. Redwood Forests – Some of the world’s tallest trees, California’s towering Redwood giants grow along much of the coast, from Big Sur north to the state’s border, nothing compares to the feeling of walking underneath these ancient trees. Sonoma Valley, California Wine Country – I was lucky enough to experience a visit to Sonoma on my California adventure and it is definitely an experience I won’t forget. Sonoma’s vineyards are surrounded by ranchlands. Unique and valued down-to-earth wine countries, enjoy the new vintages straight from the barrel, relax and enjoy your late-harvest zinfandel. This is Sonoma.. Disneyland Resort – not just in Florida, orange groves once grew where Walt Disney built his dream, opening the doors to Disneyland Park in 1955. Disneyland is South California’s most-visited tourist attraction. Yosemite National Park - meander through wildflower meadows and valleys carved by glaciers, avalanches and earthquakes. Waterfalls, groves of giant sequoias, the planet’s biggest trees. For the best views, perch at Glacier Point. San Francisco’s Golden Gates – walk the iconic bridge to spy on ships or the far-off downtown skyscrapers and of course the infamous that is Alcatraz Island. Across town, you could spend days getting lost in Golden Gate Park, uncovering secret haunts like the paddleboat pond and Japanese teahouse. Ferry Building Marketplace - San Francisco’s obsession with food is displayed at the Ferry Building. The building’s 240ft trademark clock tower has greeted millions of passengers since it opened in 1898. Artisan cheeses, wine-country olive oil, organic veg and even wild game all turn up at the 3 times-weekly farmers market. Santa Monica & Venice - Learn to surf, ride a Ferris wheel, and walk on an old-fashioned pier. Not forgetting muscled bodybuilders, Goth punks and hippie drummers at nearby Venice Beach, where everyone hangs out. Hollywood – No trip to California would be complete without a visit to Hollywood and its Walk of Fame and the iconic Hollywood sign backdrop. Santa Barbara – a personal favourite of mine. The ‘American Riviera,’ is so idyllic with waving palm trees, sugar-sand beaches, boats by the harbour . Downtown are the red-roofed, whitewashed buildings all rebuilt in historical style after a devastating 1925 earthquake. If the truth be known I could talk forever about California and all it has to offer, there is so much to see, do and discover. Perfect for family trips, couples or groups. If you would like to learn more about the ‘Gold Country’ please let me know and I would be happy to tell you more.

MARTIN and LESLEY send a BIG THANK YOU, to all of our loyal and supportive customers for helping in its design and ideas to make it professional and friendly. It has a great position in Grosvenor St. Chester with a very good display area and window profile. Revamping our rural office comes next in our exciting development plans to give the very best service and value. The service will complement our new property portal ON THE MARKET with THOMAS PROPERTY GROUP as a founder Member. It has exciting potential and is currently advertised on TV and in the Daily papers. Quite an achievement and an outstanding new opportunity, to sell or let your property. We are still committed to the powerful market leader RIGHTMOVE and of course the ever important CHESTER CHRONICLE where we have 3 of the top 6 pages every week. The Chester and North Wales property market is moving nicely with numerous sales and lettings across the price ranges and a noticeable increase in interest for property over £500k to £1m plus. Our growth, sales and letting success, is down to us as a hard working family agent and consumer confidence in interest rates. So far the election has not had any adverse market effect and our many new instructions are holding their prices. Investor buyers are back and we have sold some property where interest from more than one buyer has chased the price up. So even without the magic of spring, the outlook is fine and certainly no full or partial eclipse -good to watch wasn’t it. Let’s hope it brings continuing good luck for your sale or let with THOMAS PROPERTY GROUP. Market forces often change so if you want to take advantage of the stable market just now, contact THOMAS PROPERTY GROUP sales and lettings teams to get on the market or transfer to us quickly with no fuss. Western Rural Police Team

Message from Inspector Keith Curbishley

It is amazing how much the nature of policing has changed even during the span of my own service. Improved technology and regulation has greatly reduced many of the crimes that were prevalent only a few years ago – for example thefts of vehicles and of mobile phones, both of which have become far more difficult and less profitable to the offenders. However, changes in society have brought other offences to the forefront. Last month, I talked about Child Sexual exploitation which is now widely recognised. Domestic abuse has also become less tolerated – all reports are taken seriously which means that far more victims are willing to come forward. Drug crime and the associated mental health issues and violence offences are also more prominent and having an increasing impact on public services. Whilst is will always be necessary for people to remain vigilant against opportunistic theft, people can utilize technology themselves to protect their own property and families. It is also necessary to remain vigilant to learn what new emerging threats and crime trends are coming to the fore. If you have not already done so, please register with Cheshire Alert, to receive up to date information and advice. Local priorities for April 2015 1. Burglaries – Shed and garage burglaries across the area have a notable incidence of high value pedal cycles being stolen. Police are currently trying to identify if cyclists are being followed home from rides out, or if offenders are looking at social media and activity sites to identify people who own expensive bikes, and also use the sites to identify their addresses. Cyclists are encouraged to check their security settings on social media sites and also to be wary about being followed, if they have an expensive bike mounted on the back of their car after a ride. 2. Road Safety – Vehicle tax, MOT’s and Insurance are all managed electronically these days. As such, it can be easy to overlook renewing these important documents. Detection is a simple matter of a roadside check. These checks can be as a result of speed enforcement work, which local officers are doing on a regular basis or as a result of a moving traffic offence, which will be far more likely if the driver is drunk or under the influence of drugs. 3. ASB – many people enjoy a Friday or Saturday night out in town, socializing with friends. Unfortunately, some people act in an antisocial manner if they have too much to drink and spoil the environment for the majority. Local officers are aware of those areas where such behavior is most prevalent and will look to act and take positive action against those who have overstepped the mark. Local news

There has been a spate of thefts from motor vehicles in the Christleton and Waverton area. In some cases loose change has been taken but in other cases it is valuable items such as IPods. Please be vigilant and make sure you lock your vehicle.
