CHRISTLETON HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS VISITING BORNEO IN 2016
I
n the summer of 2016, 32 Christleton High School Students have taken the opportunity given to them to travel to Borneo. The trip will involve primarily, living and working in the villages, helping local people with new projects or to continue the work of projects already in progress, which will help improve living conditions. The students will take part in a Conservation Awareness Programme, be involved in building a Single Mother Centre, continue the work on a School Library, improving Sanitary Systems and be involved in a General Learning Teaching Program. The students have to raise, individually, £3980 to fund their trip and have shown determination, commitment and the ability to work as a team in their fundraising efforts. These range from students finding themselves part time jobs, selling cakes, organising discos, sponsored t shirts, babysitting, car boot sales and much more. They would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to everyone who has contributed, helped fundraise or attended events. We wish all the students well with their expedition and know that this will be an experience that they will carry forward with them knowing that that they have contributed to helping this country and the people in it. Any fundraising ideas are welcome or donations of raffle prizes that can be used in future events. Please email: sullivanc@christletonhigh.co.uk
Summer Delights - June gardening
J
une is a month when there is so much on flower so here are a few of my favourites to plant in your garden.
For those with free draining soil in sun then the fleeting heads of Alliums are worth growing. They come in small and large heads of mainly pink and purple flowers. I suggest you plant in groups amongst low growing perennials such as Nepeta or Catmint, for best effect. For ground cover I would choose the low growing Osteospermums such as Whirligig which is covered in pink flowers over a long period in summer. It can die back in severe winters but if you have a well drained soil in sun and want a plant to cover a large area by its creeping stems then this is one for you. Grow it alongside the silvery leaved, low growing evergreen shrub Convolvulus cneorum with white flowers in summer. However, it is tender and will die off in cold winters in an exposed position so grow it somewhere sheltered. June is a good month for other shrubs so look out for Spirea Golden Princess with its gorgeous orangey leaves and flashy cerise pink flower heads in June. It will grow in most soils provided it is in a sunny position. If it’s scent you want then Philadelphus Belle Etoile will fill a small garden with a lovely fragrance. It will grow on light or heavy soils and if it becomes too large then cut it back hard after flowering. Clip back Cytisus or Brooms, Aubretia and spring flowering heathers with shears after flowering. Plant out small plants of cabbages, broccoli and leeks to grow on for winter. Make extra plantings of French Beans, and even courgettes to prolong the season. Don’t forget to earth up your potatoes. If you would like to visit gardens, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Go to www.ngs.org.uk for full details of opening. Visit Bowmere Cottage in Tarporley on Sunday 21st June to see roses and clematis growing in this beautiful English country garden with courtyards, pergola and abundant herbaceous borders. Also open on 6th and 7th June is Bank House in Bickerton. This has terraces with borders stocked with shrubs, trees and herbaceous plants plus ponds and a wild garden. SUZUKI VITARA 1.6 DDIS ALLGRIP Driving with David Parry-Jones From a front or side view, Suzuki’s new ‘from £13,999’ spacious Vitara - that can top 70mpg and be as clean as 111g/km - looks quite delicious, and drives that way too. MODEL: New Suzuki Vitara ‘All-Grip’ ENGINE: 1,598cc 16v diesel PRICE: £19,799 (starts £13,999) POWER: 120PS @ 3,750rpm TORQUE: 320Nm@1,750rpm
EMISSIONS: 111g/km 0-62: In 11.4 seconds FUEL: 67.2 mpg combined OUT OF 100: 95
A BRIGHT and very tempting new mid-sized Suzuki hits our showrooms in a few weeks, from a company bursting with innovation and realistically priced cars. It’s a new Vitara - that can top 70mpg as a diesel and be as clean as 111g/km - but can cost under £14,000! READY FOR A FIGHT ~ Suzuki is bursting for its new Vitara to take on Nissan’s Juke, Renault’s Captur, Skoda’s Yeti and Fiat’s 500X. And out of all four, it is the only one currently offering DAB radio as standard, while only the Juke offers a smartphone link like the Vitara and only the Yeti has roof rails, like it does. IT’S a LITTLE SPARKLER ~ Highlights of this delightful 5-door sparkling and compact SUV, that goes on sale here mid April, are that its 1.6-litre petrol or 1.6-litre DDiS engines, both have 120PS of power, at £13,999 for the 1.6 petrol SZ4 with two wheel drive up to £21,299 for the top model 1.6 DDiS SZ5 4WD ‘All-Grip’. AND ON THE ROAD? ~ The suspension on the 1.6 diesel, that I tried over the mountains on the west coast of Portugal, was just perfect. There was plenty of give, but equally good feedback for the driver. It didn’t lean on corners, was always positive, and driving felt effortless. GOOD INTERIOR SPACE ~ The Vitara feels a lot bigger inside than the outgoing model and is extremely comfy and glamorous inside, with its seven-inch screen and ‘new to Vitara’ excellent sounding DAB radio, the centre of attention. Even with the rear seats up, you can access a whopping 375-litres of luggage space. BIGGEST GLASS ROOF ~ The new 14-colour combination range comprises the SZ4 introduction car complete with fog-lamps, air-con, bluetooth plus DAB radio; the SZ-T mid range which adds 17-inch alloys, privacy glass, phone linkage and SatNav, and finally the top of the range SZ5 with its LED projector headlights, leather/suede seating, adaptive cruise control, radar brake support and a ‘bigger than the competition’ panoramic roof. ADD A PACK OR TWO ~ To confuse you further, there are two optional £500 packs, an urban one with rear spoiler, chrome fog-lamp nozzle and side mouldings with chrome - or a ‘rugged’ one that adds side mouldings, fog-lamp, a rear skid plate and a loading protection strip on the hatch base. IT CAN TOP 70MPG ~ But the greatest news with new Vitara, is it can now claim 70.6mpg as a 1.6 six-speed manual diesel with 2WD, and an equally healthy 67.2mpg on its ‘All-Grip’ version. As a 1.6 petrol, in five speed manual form, expect 50 to 53mpg and on a six speed auto from 49 to 51mpg. THE BEST SELLER ~ Probably the best seller will be the 1.6 DDiS SZ5 diesel packed with everything you could possibly need at £19,499 or the £16,999 1.6 DDiS SZ-T diesel. Both represent excellent 4x4 value and economy at under £20,000. PERSONALISE IT ALL ~ And, you’ll have great fun choosing from a wide selection of accessories, to personalise it, from coloured gear shift inserts, to embroidered carpets and front dash strips. And remember this is a darned good looking replacement without any additions, to adorn your drive! ANY BAD POINTS? ~ Suzuki still insists on using what sound like ‘codes’ to differentiate between variants. It would be so much easier to remember the Suzuki Peach, Apricot or Plum, than letters and figures like SZ4, SZ-T and SZ5. And I’m hoping a stiff second gear, on a brand new car, will ease as it ages. Otherwise do test a Vitara, you’re in for a treat particularly at the start price of £13,999. 12

Night Sky in June 2015
This full moon of June 2 was known by early Native American tribes as the Full Strawberry Moon because it signalled the time of year to gather ripening fruit. It also coincides with the peak of the strawberry harvesting season. This moon has also been known as the Full Rose Moon and the Full Honey Moon. On June 6 the planet Venus reaches greatest eastern elongation of 45.4 degrees from the Sun. This is the best time to view Venus since it will be at its highest point above the horizon in the evening sky. Look for the bright planet in the western sky after sunset. Look a bit further to the east to see the bright planet Jupiter just after sunset. The two planets are closing fast due to their line of sight from the Earth. The crescent moon will join the pair on 19th and 20th June. On June 24 the planet Mercury reaches greatest western elongation of 22.5 degrees from the Sun. This is the best time to view Mercury since it will be at its highest point above the horizon low in the eastern sky before sunrise. Saturn is at its brightest as it is almost opposite the Sun and nearest the Earth. Its rings and moons look impressive through a small/medium telescope. It rises during the evening in Scorpio, and is significantly brighter than the nearby red star Antares. Unfortunately it will be rather low in the southern sky. The moon will be close by on June 28. Mars is not visible this month. The June solstice occurs on June 21. The North Pole of the earth will be tilted toward the Sun, which will have reached its northernmost position in the sky and will be directly over the Tropic of Cancer at 23.44 degrees north latitude. This is the first day of summer (summer solstice) in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of winter (winter solstice) in the Southern Hemisphere. Geoff Chamberlain

ycling is no doubt experiencing quite a revival in the past few years, no doubt stemming from the fantastic successes of Bradley, Mark and Victoria. Many have been inspired to take to two wheels, returning to a sport or just mode of transport long forgotten after learning to drive. But you do not have to drive to Manchester to go on the track to experience the wealth that cycling has to offer. In Chester we are blessed with some fabulous lanes and tracks, with a few hills offering superb views across fields. Without riding on main roads, you can travel to Frodsham, Beeston, Malpas; there is an off road option to the Wirral now across the RSPB Marshes and in the other direction you are soon climbing into the Halkyns or Clwyds. There are many cycling clubs around Chester, all willing to welcome new riders to their groups. I write representing the social and leisure side; no chain gangs or shreds. Just gentle meanderings among the leafy lanes and byways, stopping to admire views, take photos or enjoy local cafes and pubs. The best introduction to group riding is on a Wednesday evening from now until the end of August. Meeting on Wednesday nights at 7pm at Chester Town Hall, we set off to explore and share some of our favourite places – the horseshoe tower, elephant and castle, pirates grave, deep sandstone cuttings; forest, lakes, rivers, canals. Fraser Coast, Australia
Looking out of my window to the cold blustery weather it’s hard to believe that this time three weeks ago I was in Queensland, Australia, where I was lucky enough to have visited Hervey Bay, Fraser Island and the Sunshine Coast. Hervey Bay is one of Queensland's best natural holiday destinations and it offers the world's closest whale watching encounters with humpback whales as well as easy access to World Heritage Listed Fraser Island; the world's largest sand island. Its safe sheltered waters make it an aquatic paradise perfect for all year round for swimming, diving, sailing, water sports and fishing. Along the Hervey Bay promenade are cosmopolitan and alfresco cafes, shops, picnic areas, playgrounds and a marina. Not forgetting the historic Urangan Pier - it's one of the longest in Australia and stretches for almost one kilometre into the ocean. Enjoy a bike ride along the foreshore, visit places such as the Orchid House within the beautiful Botanical Gardens, the Marina area or one of the many restaurants and cafes. Hervey Bay is often called the ‘Whale Watching Capital of the World’ and has now been recognised as the only genuine stop-over on the humpback whales' southern migration along Australia's East coast. The calm safe waters have become known worldwide as a prime whale watching area. There are many operators who offer whale watching tours, all vessels leaving from the Urangan Boat Harbour. As the years have gone by, the whales seem increasingly comfortable with the vessels and often come so close you can almost reach out and touch them. I have promised myself I will return here one day in the whaling season and hopefully I will be lucky enough to experience this myself. A short ferry ride from Hervey Bay you will find Fraser Island, the world's largest sand island. Fraser Island's World Heritage listing ranks it with Australia's Uluru, Kakadu and the Great Barrier Reef. Fraser Island is a precious part of Australia's natural and cultural heritage. Fraser Island is extremely beautiful, with its long white beaches edged by coloured sand cliffs and over 100 freshwater lakes, clear and blue all ringed by white sandy beaches. Fraser Island is the only place in the world where tall rainforests are found growing on sand dunes. I was very lucky to visit this incredible island, experience a 4WD tour and drive along 75 mile beach. The highlight was a scenic aerial flight over the island, the flight was amazing taking off and landing along the beautiful beach. All this and a trek through the tropical rainforest was something I will never forget and I have made myself a promise to visit again soon, hopefully in the not too distant future! www.travelcounsellors.co.uk/tracey.tweedle tracey.tweedle@travelcounsellors.com

Queen’s Young Voices on song for the final The Queen’s School Young Voices Choir competed in the Songs of Praise Junior School Choir of the Year competition at the weekend It was the second year in a row that the choir has competed in the BBC televised competition. Last year they lost out to Ysgol lol Morganwg school after a superb performance of ‘Make me a Channel of your Peace’ This year the televised performances took place at the Albert Hall, Nottingham and they were just pipped to the top spot by another Welsh choir, the very talented Ysgol Llangennech. The choir sang ‘I’ve got a Home in Gloryland’ and judges praised their beautiful sound and said they enjoyed the addition of ‘choralography’ - the dance moves that Choirmaster Mrs Corlett had choreographed especially for their performance. Headmistress of Queen’s Lower School Mrs Rachel Cookson said: “The girls had a fabulous time at the recording and just loved the drama and excitement of the whole thing. It was a truly rewarding experience for all of the girls who took part and we are extremely proud of them. They truly were worthy finalists.”

OPEN FARM SUNDAY AND MORE ~ Open Farm Sunday is on 7th June, and is farming’s national open day administered by LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming). All are welcome at the farm and Trafford Mill from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Join us for farm and mill tours, rural crafts and activities in Trafford Mill Kitchen Garden, a much enlarged local produce fair, beekeeping demonstrations, a barbecue and more. If you fancy a day at the Nantwich Show on 29th July, we are running a coach to the show leaving at 09:00 a.m. and returning from Nantwich at 5:00 p.m. Fares include a substantial discount on admission to the show and full details will be published next month. Our Local Produce Fair continues each Saturday from 09:00 to 18:00. Cooling off.
RED POLL CATTLE ~ The whole herd has gone through another TB test and has happily been found to remain free of the disease. This means that sixteen of our animals are now going on loan to Lancashire Wildlife Trust to help them with conservation grazing at Lunt on Merseyside, and a further three will travel to Bryn near Wigan in June. All of them will be back in the autumn together with the eight animals already with LWT at Golbourne near Wigan. Around half of the cows have now given birth to their calves this year, which leaves thirty more calves still to appear, and all of the cattle are out at grass with the exception of the three bulls (Ernie, Frodo and Twoby) who will join their herds of cows in July. TRAFFORD MILL ~ Mickle Trafford Water Mill, or Trafford Mill, is the large red brick building visible from the Chester Fields and the Shrewsbury Arms, and stands at the end of a private lane leading from the A56 Warrington Road. The current mill dates from 1768 and is Grade II listed, but written records exist giving evidence of a mill on this site as far back as 1303. The building is owned by United Utilities, and is managed by a company called Trafford Mill Limited (TML). It is thanks to this company and the Cheshire branch of The Conservation Volunteers (which occupied the building for several decades) that the building is still standing. However, there is mounting concern about the condition of the building, and TML has just 40
authorised emergency repairs to protect the mill from the worst of the weather. Ato save and restore the mill and secure its long term future. (Perhaps a better name is wanted for the trust?) In parallel with the Friends of Trafford Mill and Wild Areas Community Interest Company (Pete Attwood, Steve Yandell and Ceris Timms) have done sterling work at the mill over the last twelve months, including the restoration of the forge which is now in use for metal working under the supervision of Chris Coe. Kate Spencer has worked tirelessly in liaison with United Utilities and Cheshire West & Chester Council regarding the future of the mill. We plan to install a reed bed to filter dirty water running into the Mill Stream from the A56. This will be of huge benefit to the River Gowy, and will be the first stage in turning the Mill Stream into a fish bypass for Trafford Mill Sluice on the main river. The next step involves increasing the flow of water through the mill with the aim of restoring to working order the main mill wheel. This would also allow a small scale hydro-electric power generator to be installed on the sluice itself. But now, Trafford Mill and the new building preservation trust need your help, support and ideas. The building needs to be listed as an Asset of Community Value (ACV) for which 21 signatories are required who must reside in our borough. Whilst grant funding may be available to help with the mill’s restoration, it needs to generate an income to pay for its upkeep and maintenance. How does it do this? What would be the best use of the building both in terms of income generation Red Pollto cowthe and new calf. Courtesy of Ray Woodward. and of benefit community? Would you like to be involved with the new building preservation trust as a member or by giving practical help?
Cooling off.

Polly - The Blogging Boxer ........ Fishy Business!
Y
ou lot are really strange at times. I don’t seem to have heard anything on the TV recently other than people talking about something called, ‘Ukippers.’ Now obviously I’m a reasonably bright dog as are most Boxers, but ‘Ukippers?’
I’m familiar with sardines, pilchards and that yellow fish Him-indoors is persuaded to eat, I think it’s called, ‘Or else.’ I like salmon, ‘specially when it’s been cooked in butter and the battered stuff from the Fish and Chip shop. Shrimps, prawns (but not with that chilli stuff on them, although Sam will eat them), go down well, but ‘Ukippers?’ I’ve also had fresh fried Whitebait that was left over when we were in Scotland and real smoked kippers that had fallen on the floor. But ‘Ukippers?’ Perhaps one day I’ll understand, but then again as the TV seems to have moved on from ‘Ukippers,’ and is now preoccupied with Sturgeons, perhaps I won’t. Love Polly xxx

Monthly Newsletter Western Rural Police Team
Message from Inspector Keith Curbishley Your local officers are engaged this month on an operation to target wildlife crime. Such activity is very varied and attracts people from out of the area who will often have a much wider criminal background and commit other crimes whilst in the area. Offences such as digging badger sets, collecting birds eggs, fishing without the correct permissions and licenses, shooting or ‘lamping’ without the landowners permission, allowing pet dogs to run free amongst livestock and worry sheep are just some examples of illegal activities which occur in the countryside, 24 hours a day. Please support your local officers by reporting issues straight away. I would like to take this opportunity to again promote the ‘Cheshire Alert’ website, which you will already be signed up to if you are receiving this newsletter. Being able to tell people about local crimes trends and pass on crime prevention advice, is one of the best ways of encouraging people to improve their security and get the right information to the police so that criminals can be caught! If you have any friends or families who are not yet signed up, please take the time to sit down with them and help them to sign up – it may just prevent one of your loved ones from becoming a victim of crime themselves. www.cheshirepolicealert.co.uk Local priorities for June 2015 1. Wildlife Crime – Operation Debug is targeting those areas where crimes against wildlife are taking place. If you know of locations where wildlife offences are committed, please contact your local officer. 2. Burglaries – Both commercial burglaries and house burglaries. Times of day and methods of committing offences vary over the course of the year. Local officers regularly put out crime prevention advice, designed to reduce the risk at any particular time of year. At the moment, leaving doors and windows open during warm weather is a major risk. 3. Road safety – Social drinking during sunny summer evenings, increased numbers of motorcycles and cyclists on the roads and overgrown hedgerows which obscure vision are all increased risks on the roads at this time of year. Officers are targeting those drivers who choose to ignore the risks and drive in a manner which puts other road users in danger. Ken Griffin Flute Scholarship 2015 The final concert of the season is the ‘Ken Griffin Flute Scholarship’ on Sunday June 21st at 6.30pm at St. Alban’s Parish Church, Tattenhall. The biennial competition is open to the flautists of the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester and it returns to St. Alban’s for the second time, after a really successful event in 2013. Ken Griffin was the founder member of TMS in 2004 and the Flute Scholarship was inaugurated in his memory. It is a wonderful opportunity to hear each of the flute students play a short piece and the audience has the opportunity to vote for their favourite. It will be especially good to have a summertime event and let’s hope for a beautiful evening. Tickets are £8 for non-members and £6 for members and are on sale from Tattenhall News, Tattenhall Post Office or you can just pay on the door.
