May Blossoms - May gardening
L
ate spring is the perfect time of year for delicate flowers that contrast with fresh new foliage.
In the garden you can look forward to the delicate blooms of Aquilegia or Granny’s Bonnet. This loves sun or a slightly shady area and has small rounded, ferny leaves with tall stems of elegant flowers in white, pinks to deep blue. They will self seed easily if you leave the seeds heads on and pop up in unexpected places. For a change to the native Elderflower shrub there are other varieties about some with golden leaves and others with dark plum coloured foliage. My favourite is Sambucus nigra Black Beauty with dark leaves and pink flowerheads. Sambucus racemosa Plumosa Aurea is a golden cut leaved elderflower with white flowers. They will grow in sun and almost any soil but don’t like light sandy soils. Foliage is at its best in spring so how about a climber with what looks like paint splashed leaves – the Actinidia kolomikta. You may have never heard of it but it’s a lovely climber with green leaves splashed with pink and white. If you have a sunny sheltered place then it will give a splash of colour. May is the time to finish planting out tender vegetables like tomatoes and beans grown indoors. You can also plant beans, courgettes and more salad seeds outdoors. Cabbages and broccoli for winter can be sow in modules or seed trays then grown on and planted out ready for winter and spring next year. Potatoes should be earthed up by raking the soil up around the shoots to prevent potatoes from going green. If you would like to visit gardens for ideas, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. On 2nd & 3rd May, Hannets Cottage near Malpas is open with a half acre cottage garden with water features, unusual plants and cosy seating areas. Tattenhall Hall, Tattenhall is open on 17th May with 4.5 acres of gardens including a walled garden, pond and stream.

National Flower Arranging Day (see Front Cover) This is now an annual event which this year takes place on May 1st. The event was originated by the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies (NAFAS) which is an Educational Charity. Flower Clubs across the UK will provide flower arrangements to give pleasure in their local communities and to increase public awareness of flower arranging as an art form. Rural Chester Flower Club which meets in Waverton and has members from several of the surrounding villages has provided displays in Waverton, Christleton, Guilden Sutton, Vicars Cross and Tattenhall. Look out for their designs! The club meets on 2nd Tuesday of the month (except August) at 7.30pm in the Burley Memorial Hall, Waverton, CH3 7QN, usually for professional Flower Demonstrations and will welcome any visitors (£5) and potential new members. The club also holds Workshops, Garden Visits and Social Events.

But there are ways to help manage the condition and ease the pain. There are two main types of Arthritis, namely inflammatory such as rheumatoid arthritis and non-inflamatory such as Osteoarthritis. Arthritis can cause discomfort, pain and stiffness in one or more joint and can be diagnosed by your Doctor, who may send you for an X-ray or blood test. However, there are lifestyle choices you can make to prevent the onset and manage the pain. Gary Sharp, Christleton Osteopath, shares his top tips: 1. Healthy exercise - Around 2 to 3 hours a week is recommended to keep joints healthy and muscles strong. Walking is great and doesn’t have to be a chore. A few rounds of golf or walking the dog regularly can help achieve this. Low impact exercise such as swimming and cycling is also good for the joints. 2. Glucosamine Chondroitin - Glucosamine occurs naturally in the body and keeps joints flexible by repairing the cartilage around them. Taking a daily glucosamine chondroitin supplement could help ease aching joints. 3. Healthy weight - Keeping your weight to the correct level is also good as it can put less stress on joints, particularly knee and hip joints. Try to eat a balanced diet with lots of fresh vegetables and fruit. Use olive oil where possible and try to include a couple of meals a week that contain oily fish such as salmon, mackerel or fresh tuna. 4. Get a check-up - If you are getting a few twinges of joint pain or stiffness, get it checked out with your Osteopath. If you are showing signs of osteoarthritis, you can still do a lot to help keep those joints from deteriorating. 5. Ultimately Prevention is better than a cure – If you play sports, or if your occupation is quite physically demanding and heavily impacts on your joints – then ensure that you keep your posture correct, muscles strengthened and learn the correct handling techniques to keep ligaments free from damage and lessen the chances of developing arthritis later in life.

Night Sky in May 2015 enus shines brilliantly in the western evening sky. The moon passes south of it on 21 May.
On 7 May Mercury reaches 21°E of the sun in the evening sky and then is a good chance to see this elusive inner planet. Look to the WNW soon after sunset. The bright Venus will be the first to appear. As the sky darkens, look for Mercury between Venus and the sunset. Further round, away from the sunset, is the bright Jupiter, between the stars of Leo and Gemini. It sets soon after midnight. The two bright planets - Jupiter and Venus - are a lovely sight in the evening sky. Watch for them coming closer over the next couple of months. The moon is close to Jupiter on May 24th. Saturn is brightening as it approaches opposition (opposite the Sun and nearest the Earth) early in May. Its rings and moons look impressive through a small/medium telescope. It rises during the evening in Scorpio, and is significantly brighter than the nearby red star Antares. The moon will be close by on May 5th and 31st. Mars is now a difficult object to spot as it is approaching line of sight with the sun. The major meteor shower this month is known as the Eta Aquarids. There can be about 30 meteors per hour. It is produced by dust particles left behind by comet Halley, which has been known and observed since ancient times. The shower runs annually from April 19 to May 28. It peaks this year on the night of May 5 and the morning of the May 6. The nearly full moon will be a big problem this year blocking out all but the brightest meteors. If you are patient, you should still be able to catch a few good ones. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Aquarius (low to the north), but can appear anywhere in the sky. Geoff Chamberlain

Raised beds form the base for planting climbers that will grow up the tensioned wires strung across the pergola
Try this idea for creating a green screen in your garden An established customer of Jacksons, Nick Arrowsmith sent these photos in so we could see what good use he has put our raised beds with a single pergola to. I think it is a brilliant idea, and must admit it had not occurred to me, to use these in this particular way. You can see from the images that the two raised beds form the base for the single pergola above. By using tensioned wire as supports for the Clematis and Wisteria, he has planted in the raised beds, he will eventually end up with a totally green screen, which will enhance the privacy for the dining area he has created in this part of his garden. Here’s what he told me about the project: Hi Louise, I promised you images of our pergola and raised beds - some time ago I know, and here they are. I used tensioned stainless steel wires in between the upright posts to allow the plants to climb. These are available to buy online. The one I used was a surface mounted balustrade wire kit. It’s great that it’s made from stainless steel - so no rusting, and it should last ages, just like your products. I think it finished the pergola off really well and they are a more discreet finish than wooden trellis panels. We’ve planted
one Wisteria in each planter and then filled each one with 2 different varieties of Clematis. I really can’t wait until we get the green screen we’re hoping for. Your products are lovely and of such good quality - we’re really pleased with the overall look. Please let me know what you think! Kind regards, Nick Arrowsmith, Radcliffe on Trent.
Well it gets the thumbs up from me Nick, thanks very much for sending those through and sharing your idea with us. If you want to see more of Nick’s photos you can go to his customer project story by visiting your dedicated web page where there’s a link to his and other customer project stories, with handy links to the products as well, including where you can get the tensioned stainless steel wire he used. On the subject of garden projects and makeovers, have you ever wished you could find a trustworthy and talented garden designer to come up with some exciting design ideas for your own patch? We’ve been working closely with the Society of Garden Designers on our RHS Hampton design competition and we’ve discovered a page on their web site that helps you find a Garden designer in your area, that is a member of the SGD - find a link to this on your dedicated page as well.

Agricultural Property Relief from Inheritance Tax: “Get your ducks in a row and reap what you sow!” Although very specific and only applicable in particular circumstances, Agricultural Property Relief (APR) is one of the biggest reliefs from Inheritance Tax. This is because certain agricultural assets may be eligible for 100% relief from IHT, which could create a significant planning opportunity to reduce a family’s exposure to tax. APR is available on the agricultural value of agricultural property if owned and occupied by the deceased for the purposes of agriculture for 2 years before death. NB If agricultural property is let for the purposes of agriculture, it must have been owned for 7 years before death. Agricultural property that qualifies for Agricultural Relief is land or pasture that is used to grow crops or to rear animals intensively but can also include farm buildings, farm cottages and farmhouses. When considering farm buildings, farm cottages and farmhouses it is important to note that these are only eligible if they are of a character appropriate to the agricultural land:-
farm buildings and also in relation to the agricultural activities being conducted. The test also looks at whether a reasonable person would consider the property as a house with land or as a farmhouse. • Farm buildings may include those used in connection with the intensive rearing of livestock if the building is occupied within agricultural land and the occupation is ancillary to that of the agricultural land. APR is denied where buildings are used for intensive farming and there is little or no other agricultural land. APR is also denied for derelict buildings not capable of use. • Relief is primarily for farm cottages occupied by persons employed solely for agricultural purposes in connection with the agricultural property concerned. There must be a connection between the residential use of the cottage and the agricultural purpose. • To determine if a farmhouse is of a character appropriate or not, various factors are taken into consideration such as (but not limited to) the size of the farmhouse in relation to agricultural land and other
The need to plan It is essential for farming families to begin planning at an early stage. However, whilst lifetime planning is essential, this may be adversely affected by a nontax efficient Will, or worse still no Will at all.

RENAULT CAPTUR DYNAMIQUE Driving with David Parry-Jones Chunky and attractive as a Nissan Juke, this 1.5 diesel Renault Captur returns an amazing 76.4mpg and crazily low 95g/km CO2. MODEL: Renault Captur Dynamique ENGINE: 1,461cc 8v diesel PRICE: £16,595 POWER: 90bhp @ 4,000rpm TORQUE: 220Nm@1,750rpm
EMISSIONS: Lowly 95g/km 0-62: In 13.1 seconds FUEL: 76.4mpg combined OUT OF 100: 88
I WAS on the launch of Renault’s chunky Captur a few years ago, so it was fascinating to meet up with it again, to see how it has fared over the years. CLEAN AND GREEN ~ The answer is pretty good and I don’t remember the 1.5 diesel being so green as 95g/km so Renault has obviously kept its nose to the economy grindstone. How can manufacturers make these 2015 figures so good that we could only dream of them five to 10 years ago! CAN MANAGE 76MPG ~ It was late on the crossover scene but that has meant its Juke-like shape remains futuristic and its 90bhp diesel version, managing 0-62 in 13.1 seconds, can return an amazing 76.4mpg combined fuel figure, while emitting that 95g/km of emissions sales winner. ZIP-ON SEAT LINERS ~ The Dynamique ‘Nav Energy’ variant I tried this time, came complete with nafty orange and black seat liners, costing just £150 extra, but which transformed the interior. They simply slipped over the charcoal original seats and zipped up tight. HOLDS YOU ON A HILL ~ This 0.79 CdA model, was wonderfully provided with hill start assist as standard. This is the clever system that prevents you rolling backwards and should be on all cars. You also get auto lights and wipers, another add-on making life easier. BUT NO REVERSING HELP ~ This now being 2015, a CD player, aux and USB socket, plus bluetooth, come as standard, but amazingly my Dynamique had neither a parking camera or reversing detectors which most drivers now have come to expect as standard. LOTS FOR £16,595 ~ The Dynamique level test car was a full five door car costing £16,595, with five seatbelts. It boasts a removeable boot floor, front fogs, climate control, black gloss armrests and silver 17” alloys, all included in the price. GOOD ALL-ROUND BUY ~ If you like its chunky looks, which are its making, it is a great family car to plump for, with its four-cylinder, eight-valve direct common rail injection diesel engine producing 220Nm of torque from 1,750rpm. EASE OFF FOR 83MPG ~ It can top the ton, but if you ease off the accelerator a little you can just nudge this green motor to return 83mpg which is its ‘extra urban’ fuel figure. Now that is something Renault can be proud of with a 1.5-litre, five seater, diesel offering. HUGE LUGGAGE SPACE ~ Flatten the vehicle’s rear seats and Captur provides 1,235-litres of luggage space, all within this compact car’s 4.1m length and 1.8m width. And, with Renault now offering a four-year or 100,000-mile warranty, along with four-years’s roadside cover, it’s well worth a look! LIGHT TO DRIVE CAR ~ You get a fabric roofliner on this model, two interior lights, dash tweeters and speakers in all four doors. One of Captur’s merits is it’s light to drive and park and roadholding is not only more than adequate but good enough to ‘push it’ a bit! EXTRA YEAR’S WARRANTY ~ The test model complete with its SatNav and other little luxuries, plus relatively low price, makes it a tempting proposition for families especially now it has an extra year’s warranty. ANY BAD POINTS? ~ Captur’s chunky front pillars were a bit obstructive, particularly on roundabouts, whereas a curved screen could have solved that. Also you have to go on screen to change the radio, instead of simpler push-buttons. Finally my test car’s washer barely reached halfway up the windscreen, even without wind when stationary.

Polly ~ The Blogging Boxer ... Sneezing Cake
W
ell, the party went ok, thirteen people and us six dogs. There was the usual kerfuffle between the lads at the start about who was top dog, but as Sam is heavier than the other three rolled into one, the outcome wasn’t worth betting on. No one drank too much (worrying that, knowing our lot). Her-indoors made a trifle and I managed a sly lick when no one was looking, those little coloured balls are really quite tasty. Well, whilst no one was sick at the party, that can’t be said of Sam on Tuesday morning. Breakfast as usual then, well, it just came back up, no warning, good job he was on the front lawn at the time. Now, as you know, Sam and food are not easily parted so this was unusual to say the least. He obviously recovered as later in the day Her-indoors was cake baking. Now Sam likes to sit in the kitchen watching, ever hopeful that a taste will come his way. He likes most cakes, but the coffee and walnut one is eaten with a look of distrust on his face. But it’s the lemon drizzle that’s fun to watch as he eats it. There’s a sort of delayed re-action and then the sneezing starts. And he just sneezes and sneezes and sneezes. It’s quite funny really, though I don’t suppose Sam thinks it is! Love Polly xxx

Monthly News - Western Rural Police Team Message from Inspector Keith Curbishley Spring has definitely arrived and many people are spending time tidying their gardens up, which inevitably means opening sheds and garages and dusting off various forms of equipment. In doing so, please be mindful that criminals will use this opportunity to view what you have stored in your garage, whilst the door is open, or even seize the opportunity to take unattended equipment or sneak into a house whilst the occupant is busy in the garden. Please enjoy the nice weather, but do not make yourself vulnerable to becoming a victim of crime. I would also like to reinforce the message about not being tempted to get behind the wheel of your car after you have enjoyed a drink. The warmer evenings and increasing number of events which are held during the summer months may tempt people to have ‘just one more’ drink with friends. Such a decision could violently end a great many friendships in an instant! Please support any friends or family who may be a ‘nominated driver’ and challenge anyone who you hear saying to a friend “You’ll be alright with just one…”
Local priorities for May 2015 1. VEHICLE CRIME – There has been a spate of thefts of tools from vans, but with offences across the Rural policing
area. Local officers are encouraging tradesmen to remove tools and equipment from vans overnight, where possible, or to fit additional locks or security. Also to park vans in locations which make is more difficult for them to be broken into.
2. ROAD SAFETY – Summer events and warmer evenings may tempt some drivers to increase their speed on the dry
roads or to indulge in one too many social drinks. New officers on the Rural NPU are being trained in the use of the speed gun and are instructed to stop and deal robustly with any drivers who choose to put others at risk.
3. ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOUR - It is not unusual for the police to receive an increased number of calls about ASB
during the summer months as new generations of youngsters venture out to meet their friends. Please consider that although the issues may be the same as previous years (kids tend to do the same things any particular age), it may well be a new generation this year who are not aware of the problems they are causing. It may be the case that they just need advising appropriately. Local officers are familiar with the usual locations which attract problem behaviour and will be targeting such areas to deter problems arising.

Thomas Property Group Your Feedback Mrs W from Tattenhall – Just to say a very sincere thank you to you for all the help and guidance you gave us for the sale of our home. Couldn’t have coped without your help, we will never forget your kindness and will certainly recommend you to others. Mr P from Great Boughton – From the beginning the firm was enthusiastic, helpful and proactive to help achieve a sale, they constantly listened to us and were great with the advice given to us, we were regularly kept up to date with all viewing feedback, they were always very professional, polite and understanding of our needs, we received no pressure on accepting offers, only giving advice when needed, we would highly recommend this company and would definitely use them again. Mrs T from Christleton – Thomas Property Group was recommended to me by a friend and I am so pleased to confirm they are as good as reported. Mrs B from Guilden Sutton – We were selling our property from a distance and needed as much assistance as possible and Thomas Property Group came up trumps for us, we received prompt feedback on all viewings that took place, the sales team dealt with the sale in a professional and efficient manner at all times, the sale has now completed and we thank them all for their help. Mrs C from Chester – I had 3 estate agents round to value my home, I chose Thomas as they were by far the most enthusiastic about my sale, throughout the whole sale process the customer service I received was exceptional and they went over and above any expectations I had, Thomas really helped to relive the stress in selling my home, they were friendly, always available and nothing was never too much trouble, a huge thank you to all the team, I will definitely be recommending you. Miss B from Rowton – Just wanted to say a big thank to the lettings team, they helped me through a difficult time and found a perfect home to rent, the service was faultless, I couldn’t have managed without the teams kindness and helpfulness. Mrs G from Upton – I have dealt with the lettings team at Thomas Property Group for several years and always found the service provided by them of the highest standard, all staff are very friendly and efficient, we would never have any hesitation in recommending them to anyone.

BARROW BOWLING CLUB
T
he new season has started in warm sunshine, and we are delighted to welcome a couple of new faces. There is still room for more, so if you have thought about learning to play Crown Green bowls, or if those woods are just waiting to be dusted off, we would love to hear from you. The Tuesday afternoon Norley League is well under way, with three games already played under new Captain John Dutton. The first two were narrowly lost, 125-129 at home to Tarvin Village and 126-140 away at Hazel Pear. However the game against Frodsham Cons. B saw an excellent home victory by 154 to 111. The Frodsham Wednesday evening league has been restructured into three divisions which makes for an exciting challenge for Captain Clive Green and the team. The previous wet weather had made the grass a bit longer than usual for the away match at Runcorn War Memorial, and the home side adapted better to win 157 to 104. Not a bad start to the new season, but if you would like to add to the talent pool (you know you want to!) please contact either:Steve Huddlestone (Secretary) 01829 740886 or David Crossley dmc@gtbarrow.eclipse.co.uk Landscape Design and Build, Complete Landscaping and Maintenance Service J Beattie Building to both private and commercial sector.
