Early Spring Colour - March gardening
affodils, properly known as Narcissus, have flowers from late winter through to spring depending on the variety. The variety February Gold is, as its name suggests, a tall, yellow early flowering variety. I love the sweet scented varieties usually known as Narcissus. For fragrance, grow Cheerfulness, a variety with 3 or more double scented flowers in a creamy white colour. This will flower in Late March to April. Another scented variety that will flower April to May is Narcissus Pheasant Eye. If you like colour contrasts plant the blue flowered Chinadoxa with your daffodils. Only small but with sky blue starry flowers and will self seed happily. Shrubs start flowering in spring so if you want some yellow colour go for Forsythias. Untidy tall growing shrubs but they do flower very early with bright yellow flowers. If you have room for a spring area in the garden, plant a Forsythia, a pink flowering currant, Ribes Pulborough Scarlet alongside and finally a Japanese Quince or Chaenomoles. This last shrub has flowers in either pink, scarlet red or white on bare, spiny twiggy branches. Once all these have finished flowering you can give them a good pruning the get new stems to grow and flower next year. Underplant these shrubs with Snowdrops, mini Daffodils, Chinodoxa, autumn flowering Cyclamen and the flowering perennial Pulmonaria for a year long season of colour. I would also plant a honeysuckle and a summer flowering clematis through the shrubs for summer colour. Jobs to do in the garden include deadheading daffodils once they have finished flowering. This helps the plant to put its energy into flowers for next year rather than setting seed. Any plants in pots do give a feed to them. Re-pot in new soil based compost such as John Innes No3 mixed with horticultural grit for drainage. If the plant is too heavy, at least remove the top few centimetres of old compost and replace with new. In late March, start planting annuals such as Marigolds, Poppies and Cornflowers outside in seed beds. Finish pruning roses. Give all your plants a feed with a slow release, general purpose fertilizer such as Growmore to give them a boost for spring growth. Night Sky in March 2015 Get ready for a spectacular partial eclipse of the sun on March 20! In the Chester area the sun’s disk will be 90% obscured by the moon. The eclipse begins at around 8.30 am with maximum obscuration at 9.30 am and ends at around 10.40 am. The eclipse is total in the North Atlantic passing over the Faroe Islands.
Be careful to use appropriate eye protection when viewing this event. It goes without saying that extreme caution should be taken when attempting to look at the sun. You should never under any circumstances look directly at the sun without the appropriate protective eyewear. Eclipse shades will no doubt become a popular choice when viewing the partial eclipse, and we will no doubt hear more about these nearer the time. These are safe as long as they are used properly. Be sure to look away from the direction of the sun before putting eclipse shades on or taking them off. Any damage to the protective film will render them useless against the sun’s damaging rays. Even the slightest amount of sunlight escaping through the film could damage your eyes. Remember, your eyes do not have nerves capable of warning you of any damage being done to your retina. The pinhole projection method is a much safer way to observe the eclipse. This is shown above. A similar method can also be used by projecting the sun’s image through a telescope. Mercury is not visible this month as it is too near the sun. Venus will be briefly visible in the evening twilight, near to Mars which rises and sets at a similar time to Venus. Jupiter will be visible all night, high in the southern sky at midnight and easily outshining all the surrounding stars. You can’t miss it! Saturn is a morning object in the constellation of Scorpio close to the bright red star Antares, and so will be low down in the south a few hours before dawn. The moon will be very close on March 12. Holly House, Village Road, Christleton Getting to know you.... we chat to Hayley Lavender-Thomas the new village barber and hairdresser in Christleton.
Tell us a little bit about yourself? My name is Hayley and
I have been working in the hair and beauty industry for many years. Hairdressing and barbering is my passion, I am a competition winner and have worked throughout the NorthWest, most recently managing Number 47 in Hoole.
What was it about Christleton village that made you want to run Drakes?
I had been looking to buy a business for a while, it’s a big step and a lot of thought has gone into it. It had to be the right business, in the right location and with parking. Ultimately I wanted a salon I would be proud of and Christleton is perfect! What sort of cuts do you offer? I offer a wide range of barbering and haridressing techniques. I am a perfectionist, my blending is finely graded, I offer up to date styling, traditional haircuts. I can also offer a close nought graded blend and create fabulous restyles. Is Drakes for all the family? I want to give the villages a community barber and hairdresser that all the family, boys and girls, mum and dad can use. One that won’t let them down and will go the extra mile. I will be open so you can pop in on the way home from work or school for that last minute haircut. No problem struggling with traffic and the chaos of tring to park. A local salon where you can get a good quality haircut at an affordable cost. Why not pop in to Drakes to meet Hayley at her newly refurbished unisex salon, even if it’s just to say hello., you’re assured of a friendly welcome! 15
Award Winning mine host ‘returns home’ Award winning restauranteur, Martin Cocking, reflects on his ‘return home’ as he revels in the thought of taking charge at the recently refurbished Royal Oak Hotel and Restaurant in Kelsall. “My wife and I left Tattenhall in 2013 having won several awards with Mitchells Wine Bar and Brasserie that included ‘Les Routier Wine Bar of the Year’ in 2011. Sunny North Wales saw us at the helm of The Hayloft Restaurant at Bodnant and we were happy to settle in one of the most beautiful parts of the world. Originally from North Wales, we first moved to Cheshire in 1990 when we took over the Golden Lion in Ashton. There we built up a great business, and won many awards in the ‘old Greenall Brewery days’. ‘The Lion’ became a busy and popular village pub, as well as attracting both locals and people from farther afield on the strength of the range of traditional pub food that was on offer. It was a family business in every sense of the word; in 1990 whilst at the Lion our son Martin was born, and his brother and sister, Paul and Clair, did their bit to help as best a 6 year old and a 10 year old could!! Eventually we moved to the Fox 16
and Barrel in Cotebrook. Again, we built up a great reputation for excellent food, quality ales and affordable wines. It was here that we achieved our greatest accolade when we won ‘Best Pub of the Year 2000’, a National award from the Morning Advertiser trade paper. Our good friend Eric O’Connor then approached us and when we saw the fantastic décor and the truly amazing rooms at The Royal Oak Hotel and Restaurant, combined with a great menu and Chef, suddenly the ‘coming home’ meant coming home to Cheshire and seeing faces old and new after an offer was made to join the team by Eric. Now we look forward to continuing the fabulous job that has already been done here, and seeing it grow from strength to strength, sending a warm welcome to all our old friends and customers alike to come and see us.” Martin

John’s garden with the Tongue and Groove effect panels with Premier Trellis topper panels
! "
Here’s a great project that was inspired by the need to make better use of the garden space, after extending the house. It looks amazing, and the sensitive approach to the use of materials has made it even more successful. By choosing Tongue and Groove effect panels, with the boards running horizontally to match the timber cladding on the house, this encourages a feeling of cohesion to the look of the whole outdoor space, it blurs the lines between house and garden, and brings the outside inside, and viceversa. John Horswill sent these lovely photos of the completed project (thanks very much John) and here’s what he told us about it: The project was initiated by our need to provide more living space on the ground floor of our town house. The garden area is very small - only 50 square metres, so ! we were limited in the size of extension that the available space could support. Our solution was to build a very simple fully glazed bay window extension, at the same time redesigning the garden to complement the additional area created within the house. We raised the terrace up to ground floor level, providing more apparent space, particularly when the bi-fold doors are fully open. Most of the existing shrubs were retained and new raised beds added. John’s extension and terrace with bi-folding doors creating the longed for extra space
20
One of the most important aspects of the design was the fencing and we were attracted to the simple lines of Jacksons’ products. We faced the external walls of the house with cladding to match the upper floors, and needed to extend that theme into the boundary treatment. We are very pleased with the results, in particular the balance between trellis and panelling. And as a bonus, we had ordered enough components to build a new shed and garden gate, integrated into the fencing. The contractor made an excellent job of it and used more or less all the components. Note the shed, which was built into the fencing and works really well - I’m hoping to add a ‘green’ roof at a later date. All in all, I am really pleased, it’s a very successful project - John Horswill. You can find out more about the Tongue and Groove effect panels and the square Premier Trellis topper panels used in this project by going to your local page. There’s also a link there to the customer project story with more photos of this lovely garden and many others. THE MOOS OF THE WORLD News from The Grange Farm, Mickle Trafford RED POLL CATTLE ~ Late January and early February seem to be a time of waiting for the daylight to return and for Spring to awaken the land. With most of the Red Poll cattle housed for the Winter, we will soon be testing them for various diseases as part of our Herd health Plan. This document is produced by final year veterinary students at Liverpool University and is reviewed and updated annually. It helps us to keep disease to a minimum and is also important in enabling us to prevent disease rather than waiting for it to happen and then attempting to cure it. The Red Polls are due to be vaccinated against infections which the Herd health Plan has identified as a major threat to the health and fertility of the herd. We immunise the animals against Leptospirosis since they drink from watercourses for most of the year, and against the glamorously named Irritable Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR) which is an illness specific to cattle and can cause poor thrift and infertility. Financially, each cow needs to have a calf each year to pay her way, and I do tell the animals that they are supposed to keep me and not me to keep them! FARM ASSURANCE ~ Each year the farm goes through a rigorous inspection taking a full day and ensuring that it complies with the requirements for the Red Tractor Scheme and for LEAF Marque. Red Tractor is the basic farm assurance and the logo can be seen on most British produce found in supermarkets. LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) is a whole farm environmental approach and takes into account soil management, wildlife and habitats, water use, carbon emissions and public access to farms. Currently our farm is one of only three in the United Kingdom producing beef to the LEAF Marque standard. This month therefore sees me spending many hours poring over, reviewing and updating a plethora of documents to ensure that we comply with the standards set by these schemes and emerging into the daylight at about the same time as the first daffodil of the year. RED POLL BEEF ~ We are trying to empty our freezers, so do come along to the farm and stock up on some ridiculously cheap and extremely tasty Red Poll beef. Beef is available each week through the Chester Food Assembly and at the following Farmers Markets: West Kirby (4th Saturday each month)/Oswestry (last Friday each month)Tarporley (first Saturday each month) Abbey Leys, High Legh (first Sunday each month) If you want any beef cutting to order, please ask and we will be happy to arrange it for you. FREE FARM VISITS ~ As part of our Natural England funded stewardship scheme we continue to be able to offer free farm visits for groups of six or more people and lasting a minimum of two hours. It is a great morning or afternoon out and a good way to meet the Red Poll cattle and find out about we manage the land for the cattle and for wildlife. Each visit is tailored to meet your own requirements and the walk can be as long or as short as you wish. Please get in touch by any of the methods below to find out more. Bring a taste of spring into your home this March courtesy of Philip Martin from Cheshire Cooks
Pannacotta Ingredients
3 gelatine leaves 10 fl oz milk 10 fl oz double cream 1 vanilla pod, split lengthways, seeds scraped out Three tablespoons caster sugar
Method
Soak the gelatine leaves in a little cold water until soft. Infuse the milk, cream and vanilla pod. Add to pan and bring to a gentle boil. Remove the vanilla pod and discard. Simmer for five minutes then sprinkle in sugar Squeeze the water out of the gelatine leaves, then add to the pan and take off the heat. Stir until the gelatine has dissolved. Whisk and leave to cool. Pour into moulds, bring down to room temperature before putting in fridge to set. To serve, turn each panna cotta out onto a serving plate. Garnish with a sprig of mint. Serve with seasonal fruit or a suce of your choice. The above is for plain pannacotta, add fruit puree or liquer such as Limoncello to add a twist!
Editor’s note - the photo top right, is the pannacotta I made when attending one of Philip’s courses, and if I can do it, so can you, give it a try! Alternatively why not treat yourself and book a days cookery course with Philip himself! Julie 32

Migraine Headache and Cranial Osteopathy What is a migraine headache? - A migraine headache is a special kind of headache that can last for hours to days. It can cause intense pain as well as other symptoms, such as feeling sick to your stomach or having changes in your vision. How does it occur? - The exact cause of migraines is not known. Migraines may be related to a problem with the blood flow in your brain or they may happen when brain chemicals don’t stay balanced. Migraine headaches tend to run in families and often are triggered by specific things. Common migraine triggers include: stress, tiredness, changes in the weather, certain foods (such as wine, cheese, or chocolate), MSG or food preservatives, such as nitrates, red wine, bright lights. They affect women 3 times more often than men. Cranial Therapy and Migraine Cranial Therapy has been used successfully to relieve a variety of sensory and/or motor neurological dysfunctions. In addition to headaches, neck and back pain, it’s been used effectively on jaw dysfunction, chronic fatigue, muscle coordination difficulties, depression, eye problems, hyperactivity, central nervous system disorders and many other conditions. With migraines, of course, there can be multiple causes. Virtually anything that interferes with the autonomic nervous control of the blood vessels in the head can result in migraine. In general, Cranial Therapy does a very good job of normalizing autonomic nervous activity. It effectively mobilizes the membrane system within the head to take pressure off either the nerve that is controlling the blood vessel, or the blood vessel that may be causing the headache. It is also an effective stress reducer, which makes it particularly effective with migraines since they’re often precipitated or triggered by stress. Gary Sharp trained under the Upledger Cranial institute and is a CST1 & 2 practitioner. If you are suffering from migraine or have any further questions, he can be contacted on 07824832120.

SUZUKI NEW CELERIO
Driving with David Parry-Jones
This good looking and very green small car from Suzuki is going to be called the Celerio. A hUmDINgER of a new Suzuki City car is now on sale, which not only tops its class in interior space but is very green with emissions at 99g/km while boasting 65.7mpg. TO VIE WITh DUALJET ~ Suzuki is simply flying at the moment - just look at the number of cars on the road from this former motor-cycle supremo - and still has to see its DualJet SZ4 go on sale next year, doing 67mpg and also only emitting 99g/km. AND WITh DAB RADIO ~ New Celerio has six airbags and ESP fitted as standard safety equipment on all UK models, as well as air conditioning and slap up to date DAB radio. BIg BOOTED CELERIO ~ Suzuki in the UK is particularly delighted that new Celerio can claim class-leading luggage capacity of 254 litres, for this impressive City car that will hit showrooms very early next year. A TRUE CITY CAR ~ Following its European debut at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, Celerio, Suzuki’s all new global compact City car, should make a huge impression on buyers who will have seen Suzukis getting greener and meaner while still at budget prices. SmALL CAR EXPERTS ~ Suzuki is gaining a UK reputation as the small car expert. Celerio will boost that considerably as it retains Suzuki’s trademark compact car ease of drive, while providing an elevated driving position, interior space that surpasses most conventional small cars - and has that class leading luggage capacity of 254-litres. DILEmmA OVERCOmE ~ During design, Suzuki aimed for a resolution of the contradictory elements of retaining interior space within a compact body. And their designers have overcome that magic trick successfully. BACK TO BASICS TImE ~ By going back to basics in development and reviewing the body structure, Suzuki has succeeded in delivering a roomy and comfortable interior within a compact body of just 3.6m and width of 1.6m. All these elements have been packed into a dynamically-styled package. CAN EVEN TAKE FIVE ~ A height of 1.53m and a non-slanting roofline allows greater headroom for occupants. The 2.42m long wheelbase provides a tandem distance of 743mm which gives plenty of space in the cabin for five occupants. WhAT’S INCLUDED ~ Standard specification highlights for the range will include six airbags that cover driver, passenger, side and curtain, as well as ESP, air conditioning, alloy wheels, CD Tuner, USB and Bluetooth connectivity. Full details including grading structure will be announced by the end of the year. AND LOW EmISSIONS ~ And the icing on the cake is Celerio offering low CO2 emissions of 99g/km and fuel consumption of 65.7mpg on the EC combined cycle. In the Summer of 2015 a new engine will be available offering even higher fuel economy and CO2 emissions that fall to a crazy 84g/km thanks to Suzuki’s planned Dualjet engine technology. AUTO gEAR COmINg ~ As if that’s not enough, also available next summer will be Suzuki’s newly developed Auto Gear Shift. This system features an Intelligent Shift Control Actuator positioned at the top of the transmission that operates the gearshift and clutch automatically. gREAT PROgRESS ~ With this, the driver enjoys the effortless driving of an automatic, but without any loss in fuel efficiency or increase in CO2 emissions. LOW SPEED CREEP ~ A unique feature of the Auto Gear Shift, is a low speed ‘creep’ facility which allows the car to move in gear without the accelerator being applied, ideal in slow traffic and when parking. ALL IN SIX COLOURS ~ Suzuki’s fun new Celerio will be available in six colours of which five are optional metallic finish and one solid. We hacks will not be able to test it till the new year, but the advance press information already makes it sound like waiting for! 40

Polly, the blogging boxer - Food Glorious Food According to Him-indoors, I’ve always been a bit difficult to feed. I prefer to think that I’m simply discerning. Herindoors often says that she might as well cook for four, which I agree with as your food is much better than ours. One does get rather fed up of tinned meat and a bit of dry food every day, but to be fair Sam and I do get biscuits and a couple of snacks to keep us going between our breakfast and supper. However, roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, gravy, nice juicy pork, turkey, chicken, bacon, chips and wedges, plus a bit of yoghurt in the mornings, what’s not to like? Smelly cheese hmm! Low fat cheese Uggh! I don’t like anything green, or those carrots, although that can pose a problem if one wants to be sick. As for broccoli, well I’m with that American bloke that announced to the world that he didn’t like it. So perhaps Him-indoors is right, I am a bit difficult to feed on dog food only. As for Sam, I’ve done a list of things Sam won’t eat: lettuce without sauce on it. Love Polly xxx

Cruising tips for the Single Traveller Going on a cruise alone doesn’t mean you have to be alone all the time. Travelling alone also gives you the added advantage of being able to do what you want, when you want. Here are some tips to get the most out of your solo cruising experience. When I speak to my customers the feedback I get is that they feel one of the major drawbacks of going on a cruise alone is the supplement, this is a charge for travelling solo in a multi-occupancy room, which you will find most cabins usually are. Try to be flexible with your choice of cruise itinerary or cruise company as some companies cater for solo travellers or there may be special offers to reduce or waive the supplement if you can be flexible with your travel dates. Booking an inside cabin is cheaper and will usually make a cruise more affordable. You can always venture out on deck when you want a sea view. Sociable or Solitary If you find the supplement makes your chosen cruise too expensive, an idea that some people find acceptable would be to share a cabin, find someone else to travel with and avoid the extra charge altogether. There are some social-networking sites dedicated to pairing up solo cruisers and some cruise lines will arrange to find you a roommate if you ask them beforehand. You can be as sociable or as solitary as you like on a cruise, there are many types of cruise to cater for different needs, including themed cruises designed to appeal to holidaymakers with particular hobbies and interests and they will ensure you will be travelling with like-minded people. If you are the sociable type and want to meet new people and make new friends, there is nowhere better to do it than on a cruise. You will be meeting people from all over the world. Mealtimes are usually the most daunting for the solo traveller but you can ask the Maître’d to seat you at a table with other solo travellers as dining companions; this is an excellent way to meet new people. However, if you prefer not to socialise at mealtimes, you can always order room service in your cabin. Some cruise companies have welcoming parties for single guests, where you can take the opportunity to get to know other like-minded passengers Shared Experiences Keep an eye on the ship notice board and join in with ship’s arranged events whenever you can. There are usually theme nights, activities, classes and events on board that you can join to break the ice with your fellow cruisers and learn a new skill or two at the same time. Join in on the group shore excursions that interest you, they give you a shared experience with fellow travellers and are yet another good way to meet new people. www.travelcounsellors.co.uk/tracey.tweedle tracey.tweedle@travelcounsellors.com 01244 459720 If I can help with any holiday or travel plans, please contact me and I will be more than happy to help.

thomas talk
Good news. We are one of the founding agents for ON THE MARKET which is a new national property portal in addition to RIGHTMOVE and THOMAS PROPERTY. Already we have new viewers and properties for sale or let. Look at it on line through THOMAS PROPERTY and see the TV adverts as well. The market is developing very well in response to the stable interest rates and stamp duty changes. In 2 days from entering the market one property has attracted 14 viewers and 3 offers all above the asking price. There are more viewers for expensive property and some which have been on the market a while with other agents have now sold on with THOMAS and at very good prices. Do be very careful of agents doing leaflet drops, overpricing and claiming to have sold in your area when they have not. Often the leaflet is misleading you. Ask where those properties are located and how long on the market. Pin them down. Also be careful of any agent trying to get you to change agents with false promises. Check if the agent has sold in your immediate locality or tried but failed. The real test is whether the agent has sold signs or a showroom in your locality - now To get the best selling price it is so important to use an agent who maximises your exposure to the market. Many of the new agents do not have established showrooms, have the odd page in the media, use gimmicks to get your business and don’t use local outlets like the A41 and Gowy. You get what you pay for so avoid promises of very low fees. Those agents can’t afford to advertise or don’t have the selling power through a data bank of genuine buyers. Don’t let a bad or desperate agent harm your property by their own marketing limitations If THOMAS PROPERTY has given you a sale or letting valuation previously and you are now thinking of selling or letting, get in touch with us and we will update that valuation at no charge. Keep ahead of the market and maximise your asset and lifestyle. You know it makes sense.

Monthly Newsletter March 2015 Western Rural Police Team
Message from Inspector Keith Curbishley It will not have escaped your notice on the national news that Operation Yewtree (investigating the Jimmy Saville abuse offences) keeps on making the headlines. One result of this is that far more historical and current abuse cases are now being reported to the police. All such reports are taken seriously and are fully investigated. Whilst a growing team of specialist officers carry out the main enquiries, it is often the local officers who are the first point of contact for the victims. A great deal of training is given to all police officers in how to recognize and deal with Child Sexual Exploitation and all other forms of related abuse. Not only will the police carry out a thorough and sympathetic investigation, but they will also work with other agencies in order to ensure that victims receive the support that they need, not only through the police investigation, but also to help them get their lives back on track, after their ordeal. It always comes as a surprise when a new location of such abuse is identified. The main thing to learn from this is that abuse can happen anywhere in the country and in any place where young or vulnerable people are present. It is therefore important that everyone is aware of the possibility of offenders trying to take advantage of vulnerable people and not to think ‘it could never happen here’… Local priorities for March 2015 1. Burglaries – Police work hard to identify those locations which appear to being targeted by offenders and then to ensure that those responsible are arrested at the earliest opportunity. Officers will also try to notify those communities at particular risk as soon as possible, offering appropriate security advice. Due to the nature of such offences, targeted locations will often change on a regular basis. 2. ASB – Antisocial Behaviour takes many forms from rowdy youths to cultural discrimination. Where problems are identified, officers will work with the local community to try to identify the problem and then to work with all parties to try to alleviate the issues which cause tension and to encourage those involved to be aware of how their actions can be perceived. 3. Drug abuse – Drug abuse occurs at all levels in our communities, from the individual user who will often commit petty crime to fund their habit, to the street dealer who threatens and intimidates to generate their income, to the producers and main dealers who try to hide their activities behind legitimate businesses. Cheshire police are currently targeting drugs at all levels but are particularly keen to receive information relating to cannabis cultivation or the activities of main dealers.
