elcome to the July issue.

I’m writing this early (trying to be organised!) on the 21st June, the Summer Solstice. This is the day that the Earth leans furthest towards the Sun, meaning that people around the world enjoy the longest period of sunshine - if they’re lucky! Hopefully it will definately be sunny when you read this in July. Lots inside this month, I’ve two great competitions for you to enter. For those of you, like me, who were lucky enough (some may say that’s debatable) to witness the start of punk rock and all that followed, then go to page 20 as there is the opportunity to win tickets to see Buzzcocks at Chester Live Rooms. Also Louise at Jacksons Fencing is offering readers the chance to win £300 of Jacksons vouchers so have a look at pages 10 and 11 if gardening is more your thing. Thanks and appreciation go to Polly the Boxer who keeps us updated on the doggy world. Janet Heath our gardener, David Parry-Jones our driver, Geoff Chamberlain who guides us through the stars, Huw the Farmer, Tracey the travel guide and everyone else who very kindly contributes to the magazine.. I hope you enjoy it! High Summer - July gardening

J

uly is a month when the classic English herbaceous border is seen at its best. The gardens mentioned below have lovely borders and will give you ideas of plants to grow in your own garden. I love the herbaceous borders filled with perennials that pop up year after year. Agapanthus with its large heads of deep blue or white flowers and green strap like leaves it is an architectural plant for a hot sunny border and grows best in well drained soil and moisture at the roots. Another good plant for a sunny site is Lychnis coronaria also known as Bridget–in–her-bravery according to the RHS website. If you have a sandy well drained soil in baking sun then this will be an asset to any border. It has grey/silvery soft leaves with magenta pink or white flowers. It does not last long but it will seed happily about your garden. Lavenders are also a lovely small shrub for a sunny border. If you want the classic lavender scent then go for English Lavender Lavendula angustifolia. With many different varieties of English Lavender to choose from (over 250 apparently) there will be one for a pot or a gravelly soil and baking hot sunny border. Compact varieties like Hidcote or Munstead are better for smaller areas. In July cut back flowering shrubs such as Lilac, Weigela, Cistus and Philadelphus, just after they finish flowering, if you want to reduce them in size. Cut off dead flowers from Roses, Penstemons, Delphiniums, Centaurea, Nepeta and Lupins and you may well get a second flush of flowers in late summer – always a bonus! Dead heading annuals in pots will keep them flowering and do remember to keep pots well watered in dry weather. Sow salad seeds of radishes, rocket, lambs lettuce and lettuce for autumn cropping. If you would like to visit gardens for ideas and a lovely afternoon tea, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. In Chester, on 4th and 5th July, 150 Barrell Well Hill gardens are open. On a series of terraces going down to the River Dee you can see perennials and shrubs for sun, a stream and bog garden. The Rowans at Threapwood near Malpas is open on 11th and 12th July has an Italianate theme. With formal and natural areas including ponds it is a fascinating garden to visit. Jacksons Woven Retreat garden shelter

After showing you some of our very lovely customer projects over the last few months, to help inspire you with your own garden projects, I thought it was high time I showed you something tempting from the Jacksons range. Something suitably summery, that may capture your imagination and make you keen to have something like it in your own outdoor space. I think this may be it; we created the Retreat shelter a couple of years ago, it was inspired by a structure in one of our Jacksons show gardens 10

(The Sanctuary Garden by Joanne Winn). It was a simple garden shelter with a back, one side and a roof, that had the option of having a polycarbonate covering to make it a bit more showerproof – pretty handy with our typical British summers. One of the bonuses with this standard, single unit Retreat, is the size; it’s not massive with a modest footprint of roughly 3.3m wide by 1.9m, but as you can see that’s plenty big enough to accommodate a four piece garden seating set, including a table. So it’s the sort of size that can nestle easily into a corner of a small courtyard or garden. However if you wanted to be more ambitious you can add to this standard Retreat by adding panels or doubling depth etc. so if you wanted something bigger have a chat to Jackson’s sales team. The original Retreat was designed with Venetian panels (simple horizontal slats) which looked great, this new version Retreat has our new Woven panels which I think looks even better and creates wonderful light and shade effects when the sun shines through * the panels.

Night Sky in July 2015 On July 1 the two brightest planets, Venus and Jupiter, come together in the evening sky. Venus will pass less than ½ a degree i.e. less than one Moon’s size, below the slightly dimmer Jupiter. It should make for a spectacular sight especially when the crescent moon joins the pair on 18th July. The bright star Regulus in Leo is also near the pair. Saturn is at its brightest as it is almost opposite the Sun. Its rings and moons look impressive through a small/medium telescope. It rises during the evening on the borders of Libra and Scorpio, and is significantly brighter than the nearby red star Antares. Unfortunately it will be rather low in the southern sky. The moon will be close by on July 26. Mars and Mercury are not visible this month. Geoff Chamberlain

VW BEETLE 1.4 TSI SPORT

Driving with David Parry-Jones

This is the replacement of the modern looking Beetle, which in turn replaced the rear-engined original Beetle - and its a gem to drive. MODEL: VW Beetle TSI Sport ENGINE: 1,390cc 4-cyl petrol PRICE: £22,525 (from 16,180) POWER: 150PS @ 5,000rpm TORQUE: 250Nm@1,500rpm

EMISSIONS: 134g/km 0-62: In 8.7 seconds FUEL: 48.7mpg average OUT OF 100: 89

IT TOOK a pretty remarkable car to replace VW’s first , muchloved, air-cooled, rear-engined Beetle. But VW pulled it off with panach - and sold millions of them! As an owner of one of those freshly-shaped, front wheel drive ones, for 10 years, believe me it took an even more remarkable car to succeed that. But yet again VW managed it again - beautifully! SMARTER AND SHARPER ~ It is smarter, sharper, more suited to 21st century driving, with its outstanding road holding, far more modern DAB radio and accessory slots, plus parking sensors and now built-in comfort. Anyone testing the current Beetle will be immediately bowled over by its combined suspension and roadholding and the silkiest of gear changes on the manual model. POWERFUL FROM 3,000RPM ~ I was driving the £22,525 1.4 petrol ‘Sport’ which I could have sworn had a 1.6-litre engine, at least, with its 0-62mph in an impressive 8.7 seconds while delivering 48.7mpg, even in petrol form. The hard-working but near silent 1,390cc, 16-valve petrol engine had 250Nm of torque output and, although VW said it reached its maximum 150bhp at 5,000rpm, I found plenty of reserve power from 3,000rpm onwards. NOW MORE MASCULINE ~ And new Beetle is much comfier and quieter than my old model - and even sleeker when you look at it head-on. It’s gone from being a very female Beetle to a more masculine one, possibly to attract a wider audience. SPORT LOOKING SPORTY ~ The ‘Sport’ version on test had a bulge on top of its dash for oil temperature, stop watch cum clock and turbo pressure dials, reminiscent of earlier sporty cars. Below the true dash boasts a lovely piano black surface. NICE LITTLE ADDITIONS ~ Interestingly, this model comes with a real handbrake and not the snap-off electronic one, for better hill starts no doubt, and also had elasticated front door ‘pockets’ that stretched to take any sized bottle or article. AND PLENTY OF SPACE ~ And unlike old Beetle, new Beetle sports a sunroof with a dense, pullacross sunshade. Boot space on this slightly wider current model, is really good and allows a full-size dog cage or two large suitcases under its vast hatchback, which feels like it’s half of the car’s body! DOG FRIENDLY TRANSPORT ~ As with the previous Beetle, a small switch on the pillar behind the driver, cuts off the volumetric alarm for leaving beastie aboard without setting it off. And, as with previous Beetle, the snap forward front seats and wide doors allow easy access to the two rear seats. CAR YOU CAN CHAT TO ~ With the current Beetle, you get a steering wheel switch controlled voice control which can give you hours of conversation if you utter a phrase ‘she’ doesn’t know, but is oh so useful if you confirm with known phrases like ‘switch to DAB radio’. ALL AT YOUR FINGERTIPS ~ As well as the voice control switch, on the smaller than normal leather steering wheel, are controls for a linked mobile phone, radio volume and station and the on-board computer, while levers behind operate the cruise control, headlights and autowipe. ALTOGETHER NEATER ~ It’s altogether a neater, slap up to date package, that starts as low as £16,180 in this shape, for the 1.2-litre TSI manual, and 48 models later (honest) rises to £22,340 for the Sport 1.4 manual ‘S’. And what a belter of a car it now is, compared to those 70-years-ago rear engined noisy devils! ANY BAD POINTS? ~ The model I owned boasted a completely flat floor by the rear seats tipping forward and the seat-backs lying on top of them. The current Beetle sees the ‘flattened’ floor at a more awkward 15-degrees! 18

Win tickets to see Buzzcocks

here are hardly any bands performing today that genuinely deserve the adjective ‘legendary’. Buzzcocks are one of those very few.

Eight studio albums, over twenty singles and EPs, a constellation of compilations, covers by other bands and songs on film soundtracks and advertisements have put Buzzcocks among the top echelons of British recording artists. A Mojo Inspiration award in 2006 is just one of the many accolades they have received for their work. Buzzcocks have been thrilling audiences for over thirty years. Once called ‘the Beatles of punk’, their music blends high-octane guitar, bass and drum power with heartrending personal statements of love won and lost or dismay at the modern world to create a unique catalogue of unforgettable and immortal music – music they continue to deliver to fans old and new around the world with undiminished passion and energy.

Osteopathy and Back Pain It is estimated that one in five people will visit their GP in any given year because of back pain. And 80% of adults will experience at least one episode of back pain at some point in their life. In England, chronic back pain is the second most common cause of long-term disability (after arthritis). After stress, it is the leading cause of long-term work-related absence. The rates of reported cases of back pain have doubled over the past 40 years – a trend that is seen in almost all Western nations. One theory is that the rates of obesity, depression and stress are now higher than they were in the past. These conditions are all risk factors for chronic back pain. Treatment options for back pain include painkillers, Osteopathy, acupuncture and exercise classes. The best treatment however is prevention. Here are a few suggestions on how you can keep back pain from ruining your quality of life: 1. Lose weight: being overweight is a major cause of back pain. 2. Be mobile: activity can help to cure and prevent chronic back pain. Experts no longer recommend bed rest for back pain. 3. Whenever possible, avoid lifting and carrying heavy objects. If you do have to lift, bend your knees, not your back. Keep your feet wide apart to help you to feel more stable. Lifting in this way will encourage the muscles in the legs to take the weight rather than placing the load on the delicate vertebrae. 4. Sit comfortably: sitting on a badly designed chair can play havoc with your back. If you have any questions regarding back pain or your musculoskeletal healthcare, Gary Sharp (Registered Osteopath)is based in Christleton Village and can be contacted on 07824832120. 22

The first thing a buyer sees is the outside of your home. If looks untidy they will automatically assume that the inside is the same. and fresh, with no water marks or lime scale encrusted taps. Replacing a window blind or shower head & hose can have a huge impact. The suite should be well sealed and the tiles clean and grouted. Clear away the toiletries, fold the towels and put the loo seat down!

De-clutter! It’s the phrase most sellers dread, but it doesn’t have to be painful! A large proportion of buyers are moving to gain more ‘space’, so show it off to them, don’t hide it! Make sure smaller or narrower areas such as the hallway, stairs and landing are free from clutter,  especially at floor and eye level. A tidy room presents much better than an untidy one so clear away the kids’ toys, put the dog basket in the garage, take down the birthday cards (temporarily) and put the dishes away.

The standard of decoration is always a consideration so walk through your property with a critical eye. Over time paint work becomes marked especially around light switches and on stairs with no wall rail. Check that all lights have working bulbs, the windows are clean both inside and out, there’s no dripping tap or broken fencing and that the curtains are put up properly.

Polly - The Blogging Boxer ........ You Just Don’t Expect Sam and I went for a stroll the other morning with Him-indoors, to take something up to the Primary School. It was quite warm so a gentle meander was called for, not an energetic, cold morning walk. All the gates seemed in good order scent wise, as did the various corners and bushes. I suppose you would call it comforting normality, although some might think it boring. Now I don’t mind boring, perhaps it’s because I’m getting on a bit although I’m still happy to exchange pleasantries with any dog that might think I’m a push over just because my face is quite grey now. Anyway, it wasn’t a dog which caused the trouble. As usual I was walking on the outside with Sam close to the hedges and walls, it’s easier that way as he can cock his leg when he wants too without tying us up in knots. I didn’t see anything but suddenly Sam stopped dead in his tracks, his back went up – most unusual for Sam that – and he started his really frightening growling and backing away. Well, I thought we were in for a really good fight with something really scary and then I saw it! Him-indoors was laughing and making Sam come past whatever it was and I’ve certainly never seen anything like it before. Sam did as he was told and then walked the next fifty yards to school looking backwards and growling. When we came out he started again and this time wouldn’t walk past the thing without some kind words from Him-indoors. Danger past, we resumed out meander back home. So not a boring walk after all, but Sam had to go for a lie down to get over it. I mean, in Saighton you just don’t expect to come across one of these do you? Love Polly xxx

The end of January 2004 Nicola and I drove to Adler Hey for her scan.

Nicola was always so good about her scans. She never seemed over concerned by the experience. After, we made our way to the Oncologist’s waiting room....the sense of nervousness. A nurse invited Nicola to go into the play room. Alarm bells went off, why take Nicola out of the way. Her Oncologist opened the conversation ....the Cancer had returned down her spine. Steve and I burst into tears..at this point there was nothing they could do. It was a difficult journey home, Nicola knew something was wrong...we made up some story about scar tissue showing on the scan. I felt defeated and helpless. We were due to go on holiday to Florida, the Oncologist told us to go and enjoy our time together. It was there that Nic swam with Dolphins. As it happens, for the time we were there, we did manage to put our painful thoughts behind us and we enjoyed the time together. We laughed, held on to each other and told Nicola how much we loved her. We needed that time, it gave us some lovely memories of Nicola swimming, laughing and enjoying everything she did. We laughed and had a great time with her. Knowing what we knew we captured every memory in our minds like a photograph. I remember we were talking and Nic asked Steve “what happens to the children who cannot travel and have their wishes granted?” Steve explained that maybe they had a wish that meant they didn’t have to travel. I remember the look on her face as she said “we must do something for these children, let’s set up a charity to help them. When I grow up that’s what I will do”. Sadly, she never grew up, but we have set up her Charity to help create fun and memories for these families. In 9 years we have helped over 500 families for Nicola. WHY WE AREN’T ORGANIC….

Although the farm is pretty much run on organic principles, it is not registered as organic with the Soil Association. The chief reason for this is that we would have to use an organically certified abattoir, which would mean transporting cattle further for slaughter. Apart form the extra time and costs involved, the result would be more stress for the cattle which would have the effect of reducing the quality of their meat. It would also lead to higher carbon emissions. This is why we are LEAF Marque assured instead, and ours is one of only three farms in Britain producing beef to the LEAF Marque standard. You can book a free farm tour for a group of six or more and come and find out all about what we do and why we do it.

BARROW BOWLING CLUB There have been some 17 matches since we last reported; 7 in the Norley League, 8 in the Frodsham League and 2 Cup matches. Far too many to report in detail, but we are holding our own in the Leagues with 8 wins and 7 losses. However, this hides one of the truisms of Crown Green Bowls, that it is a lot easier to win on your own Green than when playing away. Only one home game was lost, and that was to high flyers Winnington Park in the Norley League. However despite some tight contests, only one away game was won, at Egerton in the Frodsham League. This year has been a learning experience with several new Greens to play due to a promotion and some restructuring, and we are hopeful of being a bit more consistent as the season progresses. A particular success however has been the Fred Rogers Cup, which is played on a handicap basis on neutral greens across all three divisions of the Frodsham League. We have won the first two rounds, and now find ourselves in the last 16, albeit drawn against Red Lion A, the top team in division 1! We can hope. There is still room for new talent, so please contact either Steve Huddlestone (Secretary) on 01829 741133 or David Crossley dmc@ gtbarrow.eclipse.co.uk if you would like to play.

ITS OFFICIAL. We are 1st out of 58 selling agents in CH3, 5 - 9 postcodes over the last 12 months ---- thanks to you ---- our supportive customers. Thank you for your continued support and loyalty which it is really appreciated as a local business. In addition to our position as the most letting agent, this is great news and very exciting to be told by RIGHTMOVE that we are the top selling agent in these postcodes. Even better that it is from the Industry leading and independent property portal just at a time when the Competitions Authority has decided to investigate unscrupulous agents who invent their performance figures. We always say at appraisal that it does not matter how many signs an agent has in an area----what matters is how many have SOLD on them. The market is a sellers’ market once again and some property is going under offer within days. It has taken time for the market to reverse the trend but the confidence from the Election and continuing low interest rates are key features together with demand starting to exceed supply. Investors are back and many of these have withdrawn pension funds for buy to let so enjoying rental income and just as importantly and hopefully----capital growth. Families want to get into their new home ready for the September school intake so take advantage of that if you are minded to enter the market. I do try to guide sellers against the bad practices of rogue agents. This month my advice is don’t fall for the door knockers and leaflet drops claiming to have sold in your area and with ready buyers. One national chain that does this has put 4 local sellers at risk of 2 selling fees and litigation. Why deal with an agent who has to drum up business like this and put sellers in that position? They make impressive but false promises and are your best friend but turn aggressive when the seller realises they are not what they seem and want to move away from them. They do it because the Area and Branch Managers get a bonus for the amount of new instructions they get. After that----not a lot happens to sell your home. Choose a reputable agent who has sold signs in your area and a local showroom as well as a City showroom. You know where we are, Duncan

GUILDEN SUTTON VILLAGE FETE ON SCHOOL PLAYING FIELD ARROWCROFT ROAD – SAT 11TH JULY 2015 – 1.PM TO 5PM This year’s celebration is with St John’s Church’s and the 200 years they have been in this building. There has been a church here since the 12th or 13th centuries, and so the fete’s theme is medieval. The arena events will include, amongst others, demonstrations of medieval fighting, and crime and punishment. Attractions will include Spacehopper jousting, Fairground Rides, Bouncy Castle and Trampolines. There will be stalls for books, tombola, raffle, cakes, coconut shy, and many more. Historical information researched by our Local History group will be displayed in the refreshment stall, and a display featuring St John’s Church will be in their marquee. There is a Hog Roast and Beer Tent. See more on our Facebook page https://m.facebook.com/profile.php?id=365099204731

The Poppy Appeal Cheshire Our vital welfare work is entirely dependent on the public's generous support. But there are still many areas across the county where money for the Poppy Appeal is not collected simply because of a lack of volunteers.

Could you spare a few hours to help? Being on the front line of the appeal, you will be representing Britain’s Favourite Charity Appeal and meet interesting people with stories to tell. If you have skills in management & organisation, finance or just like socialising, we have a place for you. So contact us now to discuss how you can help us this year. Monthly Newsletter Western Rural Police Team Message from Inspector Keith Curbishley My update this month is focused on updating you about some changes to the way in which Cheshire Constabulary will be structured and to reassure you about our continued commitment to deliver the best possible service to the public of Cheshire. It is no secret that the government continues to require police forces across the country to make financial savings. In order to deliver these savings, without cutting front line police officers, the existing Neighbourhood Policing Units (NPU’s), of which ‘Western Rural’ is one, are being restructured into Local Policing Units, (LPU’s) covering different geographical areas. The majority of the Western Rural NPU will be encompassed into the new Chester LPU. The only Western Rural beat which is not joining Chester LPU is Tarporley, which will be covered by the new Northwich LPU. Officers will continue to respond to and deal with incidents in exactly the same way. The majority of these organizational changes are taking place during early July. I will be taking up a new post in Force Headquarters. This change will mean that my Western Rural Monthly and Weekly Newsletters will cease to exist in their current guise. Let me reassure you that the newsletters will continue, possibly seeing some new content and format, under a new Inspector. Thank you for the support and constructive comments that you have made about the evolving communication formats that have been introduced. I hope that you have found them beneficial and informative. Local priorities for July 2015 1. Road Safety – Parking issues around local schools and shops and speeding through villages are both topics which generate a great deal of communication to the police from the public. Local PCSO’s and Beat managers refer to proven data in order to effectively target those areas which are proven to have genuine problems. 2. Theft and Burglary – Many of these offences occur in spates within defined areas, often committed by an individual. Local officers constantly monitor all such crimes in order to identify the most effective ways of targeting and catching the offender, preventing further offences and keeping the public informed with information and advice. 3. Events and ASB – A great many events and shows are organized in our area over the summer months, attracting large crowds. Whilst most people who attend do so with the intention of enjoying a pleasant day out, there are some who seem to want to cause disruption and disturbance. Local officers work closely with event organisers to deter and restrict those who may spoil the event for the majority. Email Twitter Website
