The Promise of Spring - February gardening
ate winter can often bring a blast of cold weather but it does not stop plants from starting to grow and flower. Bulbs start the year with crocuses and snowdrops out first. Crocuses do best in sun as the flowers will open wide in the sun, then close as the sun leaves them. Crocus tommasinianus has pale mauve flowers with golden stamens in the middle and the birds do not damage the blooms. Birds seem to like the larger flowers especially yellow ones, so I now avoid growing these!
A shady site with well drained soil under deciduous trees suits the snowdrops better. They will gradually carpet the ground under trees and shrubs. I would also add Iris reticulata to my early flowering bulbs. These small but exotic blue, white or creamy coloured flowers will enjoy a sunny or lightly shaded spot in any well drained soil. Plant all these bulbs in groups close together for best effect. An early flowering climber is Clematis cirrhosa Wisley Cream. This is an evergreen climber that will do well in a sheltered sunny position and give you white, slightly scented flowers in late winter. Ensure the roots are kept cool with the growth in the sun. Prune to shape after flowering but this variety only needs pruning if it becomes too large and to remove dead stems. Witch hazel or Hamamelis is another early flowering shrub although be warned, the flowers are small so don’t expect a showy plant. However they do look good in light woodland with tiny spidery yellow, red or orange flowers, often slightly scented. In autumn the leaves turn red or yellow. Underplant with snowdrops and crocuses and plant next to a Cornus alba sibirica with red stems for a colourful display in February. Mulch those perennials whose buds are just below the surface of the soil with a layer of well rotted manure. Paeonies have big fat buds at soil level, rodgersias and heleniums sit just below the surface and all would have new shoots protected from freezing by a cosy layer of mulch. Also mulch fruit trees and shrubs with a layer of manure and complete pruning of apples and pears before buds start to grow. THE MOOS OF THE WORLD News from The Grange Farm, Mickle Trafford RED POLL CATTLE ~ The lack of daylight in the middle of Winter restricts the amount of
outside work which can take place, and the daily routine involves several hours of work cleaning the cattle housing and feeding the animals which spend the Winter housed in the buildings and yards at the farm. Most of the cattle have free access to silage (made from grass mowed the previous yea)r, and they are bedded on straw which they also eat, and at this time of year they devour mineral licks from buckets in the same way that children chomp through lollipops given the opportunity. February is the time when the herd is vaccinated against diseases which are cattle specific, and this will involve several days work with a needle and a lot of patience. Twenty three younger Red Polls remain out in the fields eating what is left of last year’s grass, and can be seen from Picton Lane, and they will then graze the barley stubble in late February before it is ploughed into the ground to make way for this year’s crop. In March it is planned that most of them will move to Lunt (near Maghull) to graze a wetland area adjoining the River Alt managed by Lancashire Wildlife Trust, but this is subject to them passing a pre-movement Tuberculosis (TB) test. Red Poll heifers Winter grazing.
THE REST OF THE FARM
Winter is the time of year for ditch, hedge and fence work to take place. This month Trevor from Ardens has done a great job restoring a ditch which can be seen next to the end of the green lane, and which has had to remain shallower than we would have liked since it crosses both an oil and a gas pipeline. He has also restored the ditch on the perimeter of our orchard. Cheshire Wildlife Trsut and Wild Areas volunteers can now press ahead with replanting and restoring two sections of hedge in time for the Spring. Andrew Woodcock will be trimming of the hedges in February. They are left through the Winter to allow them to provide food for birds and cut before the nesting season begins.
RED POLL BEEF ~ It’s not just the big stores having sales at this time of year. We are offering frozen Red Poll beef at a discount to allow us to empty and clean all the freezers, so feel free to come to the farm at any time and bag a tasty bargain. And don’t forget our local produce fair on Saturdays from 09:00 to 4:00 when all sorts of delicious goodies are on offer. You can keep up to date with what is going on by following us on Twitter, where there is a daily dose of conservation and controversy, and the hashtag #SpotTheRedpoll is becoming popular, complete with pictures amended by Tim Shuttleworth. The New Year is a good time to reflect on last year and consider what we want to achieve in 2015, how we can be better people and what we will do differently this year. With the New Year well underway have you given thought to your New Years Resolution? Healthy eating, learn a new skill, get fit, make more time for yourself/ your family………. The festive period is a time spent with family friends and loved ones and we realise that we are a year older. The people that we have looked after, our children, grandchildren, nephew and nieces, we now need their help to look after and care for us. Have you considered planning for your family’s future and getting your affairs in order in 2015? Have you considered planning who you want to be in control of your affairs during your lifetime if you are unable to deal with them, and who will deal with matters after your gone?

For further information please contact Lynette Viney-Passig on 01829 700 333
When it comes to matters such as these, no one really likes to talk about them. People think planning ahead is an admission of getting older and needing help. It needn’t be that way. It is better to plan what is to happen to us and our finances in the future than leave it to chance, or for our families/ friends to deal with. 13

CAN YOU LOOK BETTER AND FEEL BETTER IN JUST 9 DAYS? YES WITH Forever Living C9 Clean your body over a 9 day period- Even celebrities are talking about this Aloe Vera programme. Let’s face it the chances are most people have eaten more and drank more over the last few months than normal, and looking for a way to shift those extra few pounds, while getting rid of that yuck bloated feeling we all get. A product that would help prepare your body for the winter months ahead and helps to shift a few pounds at the same time. If you are not looking to shift so much weight, then I would suggest increasing the calorie intake but with healthy options. So what is C9? It’s a really simple and easy to follow 9 day nutritional cleansing program, it cleanses your body of all the unnatural chemicals and excellent for kick starting weight loss. It also gives you full nutrition, which means your body doesn’t try and hang on to its fat stores. What I liked about this plan, was that it is suitable for men and women, and it’s covered by a money-back guarantee, that’s got to be a plus. This easy-to follow 9 day programme provides you with all the necessary tools to help you cleanse your system. Let’s face it, most people service their car once a year, spring clean the house, so why not clean your most valuable asset YOUR BODY. Whilst following the C9 programme, it is recommended that you drink plenty of water. Approximately 3 litres a day for men and 2-2.5 litres a day for women. I found this program amazing, a healthy way to cleanse my body, while preparing me for winter. I not only lost inches but LBS. I feel much healthier now, not craving for sweet snacks. The Aloe juice is unusual taste but I soon got used to it. Definitely tastes better from the fridge. My skin and hair look much better from drinking the aloe and I have also noticed my nails feel much stronger, I am sleeping much better, I had a tendency of waking up several times during the night and now I sleep right through. I don’t feel tied all the time, and I have stuck to the healthy food options. I don’t snack on rubbish and don’t feel like I need too anymore. Overall I feel much healthier. I am amazed at the results of this programme. If you want to cleanse your body a healthy way, then I can truly recommend Forever Living C9 The C9 provides the perfect starting point for transforming your diet and fitness habits. Based around Forever’s bestselling Aloe Vera Gel drink, this nutritionally-balanced programme will allow you to see real results in just nine days.

5 Financial Tips when Travelling When you are traveling on either business or pleasure, you do need to be mindful of your money. A common error that many travellers make is they do not take proper care of their finances. As a result, they can run short of money at a very inopportune time. The effects of this can range from embarrassing to seriously troubling. Imagine not having the funds to pay for a taxi if your hire car breaks down. Instead of having to imagine or deal with any serious problems while traveling, here are five financial tips to help you out: 1. Plan out your budget long in advance of the trip. This will definitely be worth the effort. By planning a budget in advance, you will have a plan of good financial sense available at your fingertips for you to follow. Just be sure you stick with it! 2. Do not eat at all the really expensive restaurants, you may need to keep an eye on your food budget when you are traveling as you may well be caught out at the incredible effect that dining out can have on your pot of money. Look towards lower cost alternatives in order to keep your bank accounts in good shape. 3. Make sure to tell your credit card company you are travelling before you leave. Let them know that you will be travelling, to where and how long for. As some companies are more sensitive than others, it could be possible that overseas charges are flagged as possible fraud. In addition, if your mobile phone doesn't work while you're away, you wouldn't be able to tell that your card provider is trying to contact you and nothing would be worse than suddenly finding yourself financially cut off, so plan ahead. 4. Speaking of bank accounts, you need to check your balance regularly. It can be very difficult to properly or effectively budget your travel when you are not keeping a close eye on what’s it in your account. Do not go overboard with buying souvenirs or visiting the hot spots at night. Everyone wants to have fun when they are traveling, but you also have to be aware of how much money being a spendthrift can cost you. Taking a step back and make sure you really think hard before parting with your money and whether it’s really necessary. 5. Protect your money at all times: Never leave money in a back pocket, it may get stolen and pick pocketing is one of the biggest crimes that tourists report to the local authorities. A money belt and a hotel safe are the two best ways to protect money. These five travel tips are fairly simple and they all can take you quite far in terms of your ability to save money while traveling. There is no reason to see your budget go off course when you are travelling. A few simple precautions can almost certainly help you stay on the right track.

Monthly Newsletter - Western Rural Police Team Message from Inspector Keith Curbishley
This month, I would like to concentrate my message on some of the measures you can take to prevent you from becoming a victim of crime. Identity theft sounds innocuous, but can have long term effects on individuals’ ability to obtain future credit. Offenders will use a variety of means to gather basic information about you (name, address, phone number etc) and then use this to try to gather extra information – possibly by phoning you up, pretending to be from a bank or computer company, or going through rubbish in your wheelie bin for un-shredded documentation etc. They will then use this additional information to apply for things such as financial loans or home delivery shopping, which they will intercept before it reaches your door. Please treat your personal information with the same care that you take of your credit cards or cheque books – destroy or shred any paperwork with such details and do not divulge personal information to unsolicited callers. Secondly, social media evolves quickly, with new sites quickly gaining in popularity. However, all sites require a certain amount of personal information about each user upon registration. They will also request additional information which enables additional features of the site to be accessed. Unless each user goes into ‘settings’ for the site to restrict how this information is used, then this information may well be available to all other users of the site! This information may well identify when a user is not at home, such that an offender will know when an address is unoccupied. If you use any social media sites (Facebook / Instagram / Twitter etc), please make sure you adjust your security settings to restrict who has access to your personal information. Please register with the Cheshire Alert website (details above) for other advice and information. NEW VAUXHALL CORSA 1.0T Driving with David Parry-Jones It looks familiar but this is Vauxhall’s redesigned, cleaner, greener Corsa - which amazingly is also cheaper! MODEL: New Vauxhall Corsa ENGINE: 1.4 petrol PRICE: £14,695 (starts £8,995) POWER: 115PS @ 5,000rpm TORQUE: 170Nm@1,800rpm
EMISSIONS: Good 115g/km 0-62: 10.3 fun seconds FUEL: 57.6mpg average OUT OF 100: Wow 93
IT’S UNHEARD of in the British car industry that a major player brings out a new model that is not only cleaner, greener and better than the one it replaces, but will be about £1,000 CHEAPER when it hits showrooms before Christmas! CORSA STARTS £8,995 ~ Vauxhall’s latest generation of its massive selling 4m long Corsa second only in sales to Ford’s Fiesta - now starts at £8,995 in its double parallel line side-on crease fresh design. LOTS COME STANDARD ~ Now in a new marketing rethink, the entire range, from the extras free £8,995 to £14,695 (for the excellent 1.0T’), will get as LED running lights and a £70 heated windscreen as standard, along with the options of hill start, tyre pressure monitoring and advanced park auto parking! LOW LOW EMISSIONS ~ Do take a close look also at Vauxhall’s great 1.4-litre new CDTi variant, turning out 95bhp, that will have the crazily low emission of just 85g/km, while others in the range average 100g/km or just above. The amazing 1.3 CDTi Corsa does 88.3mpg with 85g/km emissions. UK TOP FAVOURITE ~ Corsa stretches back to the 1980s and last year 84,275 folk bought one, which represented a third of all Vauxhall sales. So you can see how it is crucial to GM’s future in the UK. ‘It’s the meat and veg of the range’, PR Denis Chick stressed, sitting next to me at its launch. AN IMPRESSIVE SELLER ~ And he surprised me that Corsa sales alone, beat the total sales of companies like Peugeot, Citroen, SEAT and even Land Rover, in the UK, it was so popular in 2013. PLUMP FOR 1.0T ~ Making a huge impression at the Gwynedd national launch, was the brand new 1.0-litre EcoTec three cylinder engine. It is just amazing, so look at no other, as Vauxhall has unlocked the key to get big engine direct injection performance, out of tiny volumes. THREE OR FIVE DOORS ~ Corsa will be available with three or five doors with the cut-off rear roof three door variants, concentrating on the sportier models. And there will be a whopping 14 colours to choose from, from yellow, red and navy blue to woodpecker green! ONE GREAT NEW CAR ~ On the road new Corsa has been built to impress. Its roadholding is nothing less than spectacular, it is quiet even at speed and the suspension’s so good it mimics a much larger car. PLENTY OF EXTRAS ~ New owners can even order a traffic recognition front camera, a winter pack that heats the steering wheel and seats in 45 seconds, intellilink on a seven-inch screen, with phone book support and bluetooth. And yes, a DAB radio is available! LOADSA TRIM LEVELS ~ Trim levels in the range vary from names likes Sting and Excite to Life and Limited Edition. In fact the only thing wrong with this exciting new car is the confusing mix of engines and trims. AND THOSE SAVINGS ~ Some of the exciting models, like the 1.2i that is currently £11,625, is to be £10,900 and the £14,650 Limited Edition drop[s to £13,805. But go for the SE or SRi and the savings are more spectacular over this year’s ones, at £2,195 and £2,970! ANY BAD POINTS? ~ Just two, the speedo only shows 20, 40, 6,0 80 and 100mph, with not even a red dot in between, to indicate the British love of 30 and 50mph limits! And most models have no SatNav which I would put ahead of a heated screen or park assist! 40

Polly - The Blogging Boxer ........ A Joke! Well, I’ve been a bit stuck for something to blog about, mainly I suppose because of the weather. I spend quite a lot of time outside when it’s warm and can watch the world go by our front gate. But it’s not quite the same thing sitting in front of the fire is it? It doesn’t stir one to deep thoughts, in fact it makes me quite lazy, so much so that Him-indoors has been nagging me endlessly to do my blog, but when one’s mind is blank that’s not so easy. But a sparrow came to the rescue! Now, about the sparrow, I’ve called him Rufus. Every night for the past week he’s lodged himself under the roof of our porch, tucked away where he’s quite safe and out of the wind. So, he’s under the roof with us! Get it? Clever for a mere dog don’t you think? But I still can’t do doggerel, much as I try, you know, ‘The cat sat on the mat,’ stuff. I mean, what proper word really rhymes with ‘dog?’ Love Polly xxx

Ever thought about fostering as an alternative career?
Make a real difference: by using your parenting skills and experience by offering a young person a home We offer amazing rewards and benefits to our professional foster carers; • We provide first class Training and 24 hour social work support • Earning potential of between 26k - 52k (depending whether you are approved to foster either 1 or 2 children) • 14 days paid respite / holiday per year • Healthcare plan To find out more about becoming a professional foster carer, either call Alison Gregory on 01978 313777 or
e.mail: alison.gregory @ prospectscare.co.uk
A perspective from Prospects foster carers – Cathy and Calvin If you had told us 8 years ago that we would become foster carers we would have said ‘no way’ as it wasn’t something we had ever considered. . We worked hard and had always had a busy life style with 3 teenage children and we longed for a bit of peace. If only had we known then what path our lives were going to take. A Family member became a carer and was a frequent visitor with their children to our house. All our preconceived ideas about fostering went out the window and we realised that it was something we could do. We made the initial enquiry and set the ball rolling, with our children fully supporting us. The assessment was extremely thorough as our childhood background and our parenting skills were discussed, but it wasn’t anywhere near as daunting as we were expecting because we were supported all the time by our assessor. No two children are the same as their difficult life experiences have a massive impact on their behaviour. We never take it personally because we feel that often an outburst is just an outward demonstration of an inward pain. With lots of commitment, love, and consistent boundaries we have seen children really come into their own. Our hope is that we give all our children the best opportunities to reach their full potential. We are delighted to be part of Prospects Fostering agency in Wrexham. The support and training has been second to none and we even have access to clinical psychologists who really help us to support our children. All the carers are fabulous and really support each other and we have made some life long friends who really understand some of the challenges that we live with. We would encourage anyone who would love to make a difference in a child’s life to make an initial enquiry for an informal chat. We can honestly say that it has been one of the best decisions we have ever made. Is it hard? .... most certainly. Will there be tears? .....yes sometimes. Do you need to be resilient? ........definately. Does a sense of humour help? ....without doubt! Is it worth it? ....absolutely 100%!!

Beavers, Cubs , Scouts , Explorers , Network and Leaders from all over Chester District have been rehearsing since October but we are sure that all the hard work will be worth it !! The show will provide an evening of singing, dancing and laughter suitable for all the family and we also have a matinee performance on the Saturday. For tickets contact: Mel Hall, tel.07544 144445 or alternatively visit:www.chestergangshow.net 45
Night Sky in February 2015 Mercury is now too near the Sun to be visible. Mars however is still briefly visible just after dusk, low in the south west. On February 21 Mars and Venus appear together in the sky. An even more spectacular event occurs the day before when the thin crescent new moon joins the pair on February 20th. Jupiter is still well placed for observing for most of the night. It is on the borders of Cancer and Leo high in the southern sky and easily outshining all the surrounding stars. The moon will be close to Jupiter on February 3rd and 4th. Saturn is a morning object visible in the morning twilight. It is in the constellation of Scorpio close to the bright red star Antares, and so will be low down in the south. Geoff Chamberlain

They are aimed at the public and anyone from the age of ten upwards can attend and learn the complete range of ELS skills. To date2.6 million peoplehave been trained through Heartstart. Being able to do CPR more than doubles their chance of survival. The Heartstart course is designed to follow the current Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines. The course lasts for three hours including a tea break and is delivered by a combination of DVD learning, discussion and practical “hands-on” training. This will involve kneeling and lying and rolling on the floor, so participants are advised to wear appropriate and comfortable clothing. Please also be prepared to work in socks or bare feet as The Studio operates a ‘no outdoor shoes’ policy Cost: This training is provided free of charge – however any donations to Tattenhall First Responders would be gratefully received 50
