The A41 January 2015
Happy New Year!!
Hello and welcome to the first issue of 2015. Due to the logistics of getting the magazines out over the Christmas/New Year break, you should find this dropping through your post box sometime between 29th December and 4th January, so I hope you are enjoying your break and that you’ve had a good Christmas. I had a good response to my request for help delivering The A41s and thankfully I have some new distributors to help me out, so they will be getting to grips with where all our letter boxes are as some are hard to find! Welcome to Ben (Bridge Drive, Haslin Crescent and Toll Bar estate in Christleton) LLoyd in Littleton, Isobel in Waverton and Rowton and Jane who will help me pretty much everywhere!
Best wishes for a Happy and prosperous New Year, Julie

Plants to cheer the bleak midwinter - January gardening he new year is a challenging time if you want flowers in your garden. Here are some ideas of plants that will brighten your day in winter.
I love Hellebore orientalis which will really give you large colourful flowers in white, pink and velvet dark purple. They are easy to grow and are better suited to slightly shady spots where the soil does not dry out. I always warn my clients that the sap is poisonous and could cause vomiting if ingested or irritation to the skin. So always wear gloves when touching the plants and wash your hands thoroughly after handling. Alnwick Castle Gardens has these plants in their poison garden for good reason! Iris unguicularis is a winter flowering iris which will open flowers in milder spells. The thin strappy foliage is not attractive but the flowers are beautiful, as you can see from the photograph. Another favourite of mine is the winter flowering cherry, Prunus sibhirtella Autumnalis. This is a small tree which has flowers on and off all winter in milder temperatures. The branches are covered in pink flowers on leafless stems and look very attractive against a dark fence or hedge. Sarococca or Winter Box is another good plant for winter. It has tiny white flowers giving off a heady scent. It is evergreen, will get to about 1m tall in time and will also tolerate lower light levels. For flowers from December to March plant a winter cherry, a couple of Sarcococca, underplanted with hellebores, Iris unguicularis, snowdrops, small daffodils and chinodoxa and you will have flowers from December to March, year after year. There is some work to do in your garden in January starting with pruning fruit trees and bushes except plums and cherries. Grape vines should be pruned before mid January. After this time the sap begins to rise and the cuts will bleed. Order your first early seed potatoes and set them on a windowsill in a cool place to chit ready to plant out early varieties in March. Plant bare rooted fruit trees and shrubs if the soil is not frozen. Mulch the plants with manure around the roots to protect from freezing. The photo at the top of the page was sent to me by a customer, who I met at a show, a year or so ago. A very nice man, who was admiring the Retreat shelter we had on our stand. Brian took a leaflet, saying he was very impressed with the Retreat, and said he was going to have one in his own garden, and that he may adapt it to make it a bit larger, as he had the room for probably ‘one and a half Retreats’. He promised me photos of the finished installation.
This autumn I was at the same show, when Brian visited our stand again, “I’m nearly finished, I will send you those photos soon,” he told me. Well they were definitely worth waiting for. I think you’ll agree? I certainly wouldn’t mind this as my garden. Thanks Brian, for showing us what you can achieve with a Retreat – and a half – and a lot of design genius. Hopefully that will give us all some inspiration to do something lovely to our own gardens in this new year.

Ever thought about fostering as an alternative career?
Make a real difference: by using your parenting skills and experience by offering a young person a home We offer amazing rewards and benefits to our professional foster carers; • We provide first class Training and 24 hour social work support • Earning potential of between 26k - 52k (depending whether you are approved to foster either 1 or 2 children) • 14 days paid respite / holiday per year • Healthcare plan To find out more about becoming a professional foster carer, either call Alison Gregory on 01978 313777 or
e.mail: alison.gregory @ prospectscare.co.uk
A perspective from Prospects foster carers – Cathy and Calvin If you had told us 8 years ago that we would become foster carers we would have said ‘no way’ as it wasn’t something we had ever considered. . We worked hard and had always had a busy life style with 3 teenage children and we longed for a bit of peace. If only had we known then what path our lives were going to take. A Family member became a carer and was a frequent visitor with their children to our house. All our preconceived ideas about fostering went out the window and we realised that it was something we could do. We made the initial enquiry and set the ball rolling, with our children fully supporting us. The assessment was extremely thorough as our childhood background and our parenting skills were discussed, but it wasn’t anywhere near as daunting as we were expecting because we were supported all the time by our assessor. No two children are the same as their difficult life experiences have a massive impact on their behaviour. We never take it personally because we feel that often an outburst is just an outward demonstration of an inward pain. With lots of commitment, love, and consistent boundaries we have seen children really come into their own. Our hope is that we give all our children the best opportunities to reach their full potential. We are delighted to be part of Prospects Fostering agency in Wrexham. The support and training has been second to none and we even have access to clinical psychologists who really help us to support our children. All the carers are fabulous and really support each other and we have made some life long friends who really understand some of the challenges that we live with. We would encourage anyone who would love to make a difference in a child’s life to make an initial enquiry for an informal chat. We can honestly say that it has been one of the best decisions we have ever made. Is it hard? .... most certainly. Will there be tears? .....yes sometimes. Do you need to be resilient? ........definately. Does a sense of humour help? ....without doubt! Is it worth it? ....absolutely 100%!!

Since last month almost all of the Red Polls have been brought in to the yards and buildings for the Winter, and become acustomed to their Winter diet of silage (made from grass) and straw. To great relief the whole herd tested clear of Bovine Tuberculosis (BTb) in late November, but under new rules will have to be tested again in another six months. In what seems to be a futile attempt to contain the disease, the entire county has been placed under a six-monthly testing regime which will be costly, stressful and disruptive. However, the vaccination of badgers on the farm by Cheshire Wildlife Trust for a second year must be reducing our herd’s exposure to this pernicious bacterium. LOCAL PRODUCE FAIR - All are welcome at our local produce fair which takes place every Saturday from 09:00 to 16:00. As well as our own Red Poll beef, there are free range organic eggs, jams and preserves from Find Inspiration In Food, honey produced on the farm, Jane’s Cakestand (specialising in gluten free cakes and fantastic fudge), Jane’s Handmade Bread, Chorlton Cheese, and produce from Trafford Mill Kitchen Garden. We are happy to take orders and deliver free of charge locally. You can also order online through the Food Assembly at www.thefoodassembly.com to collect your purchases from Telfords Warehouse in Chester on a Monday evening. We will be open as usual throughout the Christmas period. HEDGEROW & WATERCOURSE RESTORATION - With help from Cheshire Wildlife Trust a further programme of watercourse fencing and protection is being undertaken this Winter. You can see the new fences erected by Richard Johnson and Andrew Woodcock by walking the permissive footpath from the green lane to the River Gowy. The fences prevent cattle from eroding the banks and from grazing them, allowing vegetation to grow and provide better habitat for small mammals such as water voles which are believed to buscking the national trend and increasing in numbers in this area. Hedgerow restoration is also visible from this footpath, and is being undertaken by Cheshire Wildlife Trust and Wild Areas & Friends of Trafford Mill volunteers. A further short section of hedge is then due to be replanted behind the farm, and fenced to prevent the Red Polls from eating it in the Spring, before the ditches running parallel to these hedges are re-excavated. FREE FARM VISITS - We still offer free farm visits for groups of six or more people and lasting around two hours. They are funded by Natural England and can be tailored to your interests, and include the us of our meeting room. So if you would like a visit with a difference to find out about food, farming, conservation and the environment, please get in touch.
Wishing every reader a Happy New Year, Huw Rowlands Visit us at www.rowlandsredpolls.co.nr 16

SUZUKI SWIFT 1.2 DUALJET SZ4 Driving with David Parry-Jones This petrol Suzuki Swift Dualjet goes on sale in January and when it does it will boast an amzing 67mpg and 99g/km emissions. MODEL: Suzuki Swift Dualjet ENGINE: 1,242cc 4-cyl petrol PRICE: Projected as £15,125! POWER: 90PS @ 6,000rpm TORQUE: 120Nm@4,400rpm
EMISSIONS: Low 99g/km 0-62: In 12.3 seconds FUEL: 65.7mpg average MARKS OUT OF 100: 93
I’VE been telling folk wanting a bargain, to focus on Suzuki’s Swift that starts at only £10,799. Well hang fire a while, because a new stablemate arrives in January called the Swift Dualjet which will do 65mpg with only 99g/km emissions. SUCH ECONOMY ~ I’ve been lucky enough to drive it already and, although the price will be nearer £15,125 for the 1.2 SZ4 five-door version, it will not only save a fortune on fuel but will be the amongst the cleanest petrol engines yet, with the least emissions. MID RANGE POWER ~ Keep those revs up as, although this new car takes 12.3 seconds to reach 62mph (you cannot improve mpg without cutting power), it’s mid-range thrust is truly amazing aletting you can overtake easily. INCREDIBLY GREEN ~ In the last two years engines have just got cleaner and cleaner and, with Dualjet, you amazingly get diesel-type low CO2 cleanliness from a petrol engine. THINGS GET BETTER ~ The standard Swift itself is a stunner and now with figures like the ones I witnessed, Dualjet will win thousands of new devotees. Like its stablemates the new cleaner and greener model has phenomenal grip and suspension. AND AS STANDARD ~ Don’t worry you will miss out with this new 3.85m car as, coming as standard, are a driver’s knee airbag plus curtain and side airbags; side impact protection beams, tyre pressure monitors; a get you home spare wheel; cruise control; remote locking with keyless start and loads and loads more. LOTS FOR YOUR CASH ~ For your cash, you get remote fuel opener, high mounted stop light, auto stop start, a good top speed of 102.3mph, outside temperature guage, electric front and rear windows and outside mirrors, automatic air conditioning, and halogen multi-reflector headlamps. UNASHAMEDLY ATTRACTIVE ~ The Swift offers good all round vision, in all variants, and a cheeky external look that makes this compact car look a lot larger than it is and also unashamedly attractive. The bags of space dedicated to its front and rear lights is always a good sign. DUALJET A CAR APART ~ The Dualjet boasts attractive alloys, that futuristic keyless starting, really effective air conditioning, and a good old fashioned parking brake lever! A dash-top twoinch deep lidded locker is ideal for your e-cigs paraphernalia, your mobile phone and charger and any loose change you wish to keep out of sight. FUN COMPARISONS ~ Dualjet, compared with a standard 1.2 manual Swift, produces 90PS of power compared with 94 to boost the fuel economy; is just 0.5 of one mph less than the standard car’s 103mph top speed; and has slightly higher gear ratios to drain that lost drop out of every litre. WHAT ELSE HAS IT? ~ Well, you not only get those halogen headlamps, but have headlamp levelling, heated door mirrors, LED daytime lights, plenty of Isofix child seat anchorages, a front map light, central cabin lights and a light in the luggage area. AND THE CAR’S USP? ~ The unique selling point of Dualjet has to be the phenomenal 65.7mpg per petrol gallon, beating some car’s diesel performance and that 99g/km of clean emissions. But it is also a darned good and fun car to drive and some will buy it for that alone! ANY BAD POINTS? ~ None came to light in a good drive right through Gwynedd. Suzukis are becoming more popular by the day, for being such good value for money. Now with clean Dualjet on its way, they should be irresistible! 18

Discounted Fees for ‘Early Bird’ Properties
A
t Somerville’s Estate Agents we have a fantastic offer running throughout January for any ‘Early Bird Sellers’ in the 2015 housing market. With buyer demand still high and a real shortage of good quality homes available, we are keen to satisfy the needs of our registered buyers and are so confident about selling properties that we are currently offering some huge discounts* for all January instructions:
‘
The sale fee for all properties up to £200,000 is just £999 and for properties between £200,001 and £250,000 the fee is only £1500! Plus we offer a complete No Sale, No Charge Guarantee meaning you only pay for a successful sale! If you would like a free sale appraisal and valuation of your home, please use the contact details on the opposite page to contact us and arrange an appointment. *Discounts are available for properties above £250,000 on an individual basis. All fees are subject to VAT, terms & conditions apply’.
’
Having dealt with Richard Wheeler twice before, we knew the sale of our home was in safe hands with Somerville’s. Thanks to their innovative approach they managed ten viewings for us on the first day to market and by the second day we’d accepted one of two offers from reliable buyers and at the required sale price - all of which was instrumental in enabling us to secure our own purchase. Moving home can be quite complicated but this is as smooth as it gets! Andy & Kim E., Chester

Waverton Pre School “Hello, I have recently started at Waverton Pre School. I am having a brilliant time and have made lots of new friends. My Mummy and Daddy suggested I might like to tell other children what a great place it is! The key carers who look after me at Pre School are kind and help me to learn lots of new things. Today I made a picture just by using my hands, I got quite messy but the end result was really good! I learnt about the different colours of paint and experimented with how to mix them together. I sat with my friends in “Circle Time” and we spoke about our pets. I enjoyed hearing about how to look after an animal. My friends and I are starting to learn our “letter sounds” and to help we enjoy having a sing along to the “jolly phonics” tunes There are toys to play with, both inside and outside. I am learning about my numbers and I plan to count how many toys there are. I’m glad I came to Waverton Pre School, being here will certainly help me to get ready for “big school”. If you would like to arrange a visit to find out more, then please call on 01244 332579 or e mail at wavertonps@yahoo.co.uk.

Monthly Newsletter - Western Rural Police Team Message from Inspector Keith Curbishley
“It may be of interest for you to know that various parts of this newsletter are published in a variety of locations. It is now being reproduced in a number of magazines which are distributed free of charge to most households as well as being forwarded to Homewatch coordinators and many Parish councils. It is also circulated via the Alert website (www.cheshirepolicealert.co.uk) which contains a great deal of useful and up to date information about current crime issues and crime prevention advice. This website also contains more local news with details about crimes in your area and what police are doing to tackle it. Predictably, but necessarily, my main theme this month is to urge everyone to be mindful of criminal activity which targets the Christmas and New Year season. Burglars will target addresses which appear empty or which may contain items of value. Please therefore make efforts to make your house appear occupied and keep presents and car keys out of sight. (Register with the Alert website for more security tips.) Also, pay particular attention to your bank statements and credit card / personal identity security, to prevent fraudulent purchases under your name. Most importantly however, please make sure that you enjoy the festive season in a safe and enjoyable manner – if you are having a drink, leave the car at home and pre-arrange your return transportation, to prevent any temptation later on when your judgment may be clouded!”
Local priorities
1. ASB – Drink related antisocial behavior can often be an issue in village centres at this time of year. Additional patrols are being targeted towards these areas during those hours prone to such incidents, to deter and prevent trouble. 2. BURGLARIES – Local officers will be targeting those residential areas which are identified as being vulnerable to seasonal burglaries. Security advise is being promoted via a variety of media formats. 3. ROAD SAFETY – The difficulty in finding a taxi at this time of year may tempt some people to risk getting behind the wheel of their car when they have drunk too much. All officers will be particularly mindful of drink drivers at ALL times of day and will stop any vehicle if drunk driving is suspected Email western.rural.npu@cheshire.pnn.police.uk Twitter @WesternRuralNPU Website www.cheshire.police.uk

Night Sky in January 2015 A happy new year to all sky watchers! All five naked eye planets are visible at various times this month. Mercury and Venus can be seen low down near the south-western horizon just after sunset early in the month. Mars is higher in the sky as shown in the picture. Jupiter is in the east, visible for most of the night, and Saturn in the south before dawn. The biggest challenge is to spot Mercury. Find the brilliant Venus first then use binoculars to find Mercury beneath Venus in the same field of view. The crescent moon joins them on the 21st and 22nd of the month. Mars, the red planet, stays out for about two hours after Venus sets. The crescent moon lies between Mars and Venus on the 22nd. Jupiter can be seen for almost all of the night on the borders of Leo and Cancer, in the southern sky and easily outshining all the other surrounding stars. The moon will be close to Jupiter on January 7th and 8th. Saturn will be a morning object, low down in the southern sky rising several hours before sunrise. The waning crescent moon will be very close on the morning of January 16th. The major meteor shower this month is the Quadrantids on the 4th January. The Quadrantids shower has a very short, sharp peak of very bright and often colourful shooting stars anywhere in the sky. However, on the 4th January the moon is full and so its light will interfere with any observations. Nevertheless if you catch a Quadrantid fireball then it will be worthwhile. Geoff Chamberlain

‘Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend……..’
don’t watch the telly much, not like the Pug Dogs do when they visit. Honestly, the fuss and bother they kick up jumping at the screen when any sort of animal appears. Even that poor pigeon in Corrie Orrie gets barked at. Silly puggers I suppose you might call them! Well, Her-indoors snapped me watching Neil Diamond, isn’t he just gorgeous? Worth watching and listening to. I wonder if there’s a fan club for dogs? Now a sad note. My friend Eileen from just down the road from us has passed away. She always read my blogs and would come over and speak to me when I was in the front garden. Things won’t be quite the same now will they? Love Polly xxx

Sharm El Sheikh ….year round sunshine From your Travel Counsellor TRACEY TWEEDLE As one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Arab world, Sharm el-Sheikh offers some very convincing reasons to visit even if you are not just the run of the mill beach tourist. Offering some of the finest diving spots in the world, this city is full of delights; from an unforgettable adventure into the desert to exploring ancient ruins. The perfect sun, sea and sand holiday is on offer in Sharm el-Sheikh, if you seek that type of holiday. Sharm el Sheikh has a reputation of being one of the world's most extraordinary diving destinations in the Red Sea. There are many beaches on offer with crystal-clear warm water, outstanding underwater scenery and many brightly coloured fish. Na'ama Bay is worth a visit, this long sandy bay was where the first hotel appeared in the early eighties. It is a particularly appealing spot for tourists and has breath-taking coastal scenery, water sports and extreme natural beauty. Sharm el-Sheikh is the most developed of the Red Sea resorts and has many other attractions for instance exploring Sharm Old Town, a desert tour by camel or a show with belly dancers and tanoura dancing. Sharm el-Sheikh is located on the Sinai Peninsula which is renowned for being the site when God first spoke to Moses. Mount Sinai holds religious significance with biblical origins and along with Ras Muhammad Natural Park it enriches Sharm el-Sheikh with some wonderful natural places to explore. Most of Sharm el-Sheikh’s luxury accommodation and restaurants are situated four miles from the city at Na’ama Bay and it has become a busy holiday resort with plenty of shopping opportunities, late night entertainment and an attractive holiday atmosphere. You will find vibrant nightlife here in the form of casinos, discos and nightclubs and one thing is for certain - you can't complain of boredom. A top tourist destination, attractions here are diverse to say the least, and there is plenty for each member of the family. Most tourists planning a holiday in Sharm el Sheikh will more than likely be looking for the sun, sea and sand but they will be surprised to find so much more…! www.travelcounsellors.co.uk/tracey.tweedle tracey.tweedle@travelcounsellors.com

A Final Thought … what’s in store?
A
s a famous Scouser, with an airport named after him, once famously said it’s “another year over … and a new one just begun”. I know it’s a cliché that the years seem to go by more quickly as you get older but, really, just where on earth did 2014 go to! So what will you remember the last year for? Will it be the downsides of increased political conflict; with Russia’s invasion of Crimea (not that they’d admit it) or the health scare of an Ebola epidemic, or are you someone whose event glass is half full; with a more successful than predicted World Cup in Brazil (although not for England) or another first for space exploration, as we managed to land a space probe, for the first time, on a comet with the (less than!) snappy title of Comet 67p, which sounds more like the sort of celestial body you’d pick up in Poundland! But, probably more interesting to speculate about at this time of year, what are the major events facing us in 2015? Relying on our old friend Wikipedia, the following are some of the highlights we can expect during a year that the United Nations has apparently designated as the International Year of Light; • March 20 will bring a total solar eclipse, although you may need to base yourself in the North Atlantic to achieve the full effect, • May 7 will herald a General Election, following which, it would seem, at the moment, we’re likely to see another coalition Government (with many combinations of parties possible), • July 14 will see a continuation of our Space theme, with NASAs New Horizons spacecraft paying a nearby visit to Pluto as it heads on its way completely out of our solar system, and • On September 20 our Queen, if still reigning, will finally overtake her great great grandmother, Queen Victoria, to become Britain’s longest serving monarch. Those are the predictable predictions though, surely a quick scan of the wider Internet, which we’re always told is the home of unsubstantiated rumour (not like Wikipedia then!) can come up with something a bit more speculative and outlandish. In ten minutes of surfing these are the wildest claims for the coming year I could find (and if all of these happen I’m taking up a new career as a soothsayer); • Oasis are set to reform and headline Glastonbury, • Lionel Messi will leave Barcelona and sign for Man Utd/Arsenal/Chelsea (delete as you prefer), and • From the home of wacky (and almost always incorrect) predictions, Old Moore’s Almanac; Nicole Scherzinger to fall pregnant; President Obama to be “tempted by a pretty lady” (you’ve got to love their language!) and a worldwide grape shortage (as long as it’s not hops I’m fine). A final thought … if we’re into the territory of wild speculation, why not just make one up myself. How about; Chester FC to go on a run of form during the second half of the season, sneak into the play-offs, win a final at Wembley and make it back into the Football League! Improbable? Yes. Impossible? No. If we finish where we started, with Mr Lennon, sometimes all you’ve got to do is imagine!
