Superfast fibre broadband arrives in Christleton, Waverton and Tattenhall
T
he £28.5m Connecting Cheshire Partnership has announced that its new fibre-optic network - bringing speeds of up to 80 megabits per second (Mbps) - is now available along the A41 villages as part of its roll-out to more than 80,000 homes and businesses across Cheshire. Fibre broadband will have a big impact at home and for businesses. It’s not just about a faster internet experience or doing one thing quicker, it’s about everyone being able to do their own thing online, all at the same time. You can work or play - smarter, faster, better – whether from your smartphone, tablet or computer. Check the Connecting Cheshire website to see if your home or business can be upgraded and then contact your Internet Service Provider or shop around for the best deal and order a fibre broadband service - it doesn’t happen automatically! Connecting Cheshire, a partnership between BT and Cheshire West and Chester, Cheshire East, Halton and Warrington Councils, aims to reach an additional 80,000 mainly rural homes and businesses with fibre broadband. This is in addition to BT’s commercial investment in fibre across Cheshire, Halton and Warrington so that by the end of 2015 a total of 400,000 premises (around 96%) will have access to high-speed broadband. A free business support programme is also available to help small businesses exploit the benefits of fast broadband, see our website for more details. Night Sky in August 2014 The major focus for August is the Perseid Meteor Shower of the 12th and 13th August – one of the best meteor showers of the year. The prospects for viewing this shower are not as good as last year because the waning full moon will rise just after 9 pm and its light will swamp out the lesser meteors. Nevertheless, there should be a good opportunity to observe this shower in the late evening. Expect about 20 to 30 shooting stars per hour at any place over the sky. Venus continues to be visible as a brilliant morning star low above the north-eastern horizon before sunrise. On August 18th Venus will pass very close to Jupiter, but will appear about 5 times brighter. The thin waning crescent moon will appear above and to the right of Jupiter with Venus below on the morning of 23 August. Mars sets about 2 hours after sunset towards the end of the month. On August 27th it will pass just south of the planet Saturn, the two planets being about equal brightness but with contrasting colours. Mars – orange/red, Saturn – yellowish. The first quarter moon will pass between the two planets on August 3rd and the waxing crescent moon will be just south of Saturn on the evening of August 31st. Geoff Chamberlain

Cattle Moos
All the cattle are out in the fields and the yard and buildings seem strangely empty. The three bulls (Ernie, Frodo and Twoby ) are with their respective groups of cows and can be seen from the permissive footpath network around the farm. Most of the cows have now given birth to calves which will remain with them for the rest of the year. The warm, damp weather is ideal for flies which are bothering the Red Polls. In this hot weather they tend to do most of their grazing early and late and lie still in the heat in the middle of the day. Now that the herd is officially free of Tuberculosis, we are hoping to sell some heifers (young females) to other breeders before the winter. Whilst we have plenty of grass for the animals to eat, we are hampered by a lack of suitable winter housing for the cattle. Lots of the Red Polls are partial to apples which are costing a fortune, so the windfall apple season is eagerly anticipated, although they now have serious competition as will be revealed below. The Picture shows Pint Pot, our ox, with other Red Polls and lots of grass in Red Poll paradise.
Cider with Rowlands
Cheshire Cider is a community cider project coming to the farm in September. A press is to be set up in one of the farm buildings to make cider which will be sold locally. Please bring your surplus and damaged windfall apples to the farm where they will be used, and you will get some cider in return once it is ready. Some of the profits from this scheme will go to local charities (and some the apples may end up being eaten by the Red Polls). Cider will be bottled for retail sales and stored in barrels for sale in local pubs.
The Food Assembly
The Food Assembly is a new idea which has come to Chester. It is a co-operative supplying food from local producers and includes our own LEAF Marque Red Poll beef. You order online and then collect your food from Telford’s Warehouse, Tower Wharf CH1 4EZ on a Monday evening. The Food Assembly goes live in September and is a fantastic alternative to to the galloping Tescoisation of the Chester area. For more information please go to www.foodassembly.com
For more information about anything to do with the farm please email huw.rowlands145@btinternet.com or call 07950 963526. If you like Twitter please follow @redpollbeef for a daily dose of cattle and controversy. Huw Rowlands

Colour their lives forever
Late Summer - Gardening in August August can be a difficult month to have flowers at their best as borders tend to be tired as the spring and early summer flowers fade. The secret is to buy plants at regular intervals from spring to autumn when nurseries put out plants that are in flower or about to flower. A tall elegant perennial that will put on 1.5m of growth in a year is Veronicastrum virginicum. These perennials love a sunny position and will grow upright, taking up little space in the soil and giving masses of long spires of flowers in pink, white or lavender. For those with a damper soil try Monarda or Bergamot, a clump forming perennial with pink, red or lavender blue flowers and aromatic leaves that will grow up to 90cm tall. Climbers that look good in late summer include Solanum crispum or Potato tree. The flowers are Lavender blue or white and the plant will flower for a long period. A climber for those with a sheltered garden is Tropaeolum speciosum or the Scottish flame flower. This is an herbaceous climber so it dies down in winter then in summer climbs through hedges and has scarlet flowers over a long period. The red flowers stand out against a clipped hedge or climbing through a shrub with yellow foliage. Hedges such as yew and box can have their last cut of the year in August. Cutting back later will encourage new growth that may well be killed in early frosts so allow any new growth to ripen by trimming in August. Seeds of winter salads such as land cress, rocket, spinach and winter lettuces can be sown in August. Pinch out the tops of runner beans before they disappear too high to reach as this will encourage more side shoots and flowers to form. If you would like to visit gardens for ideas, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Hannets Cottage garden Kidnal near Malpas is open on 16th and 17th August and has herbaceous borders, ponds and a plant stall. Yew Tree House Garden Hankelow near Audlem open on 9th and 10th August has some of the plants mentioned above. This garden has a wealth of summer flowering perennials, no lawns just plants! Both gardens will give plenty of ideas for late summer.

Cranial Osteopathy for Babies and Children
t is believed that babies and children, should not have any stresses or strains in their bodies, because they are ‘so young’. However, this is not true. Birth is one of the most stressful events of our lives. A baby is subjected to massive forces, as the uterus pushes to expel the baby against the natural resistance of the birth canal. A baby has to twist and turn as it squeezes through the bony pelvis, on its short but highly demanding journey. The baby’s head has the exraordinary ability to absorb these stresses and strains. In order to reduce the size of the head, the soft bones overlap, bend and warp as the baby descends down the birth canal. The baby’s chin is normally well tucked in towards its chest to reduce the presenting diameter of the head. Many babies are born with odd shaped ‘cone-heads’ as a result. In the first few days, the head can usually be seen to gradually lose this moulded shape, as they adjust to their new environment. However, this unmoulding process is often incomplete, especially if it was a difficult birth or if it was an assisted delivery where forceps or ventouse were used. As a result, the baby may have to live with some very uncomfortable stresses within its head and body. Some babies cope very well with even quite severe retained moulding and compression, and are contented and happy. For others it is a different story, and quite often the result is an unsettled baby that won’t sleep and is in obvious discomfort. The baby could be quite windy, suffer from reflux or be colicky. Osteopathic treatment using the cranial approach is gentle, safe and effective for babies and children. Very specific, skilled, light pressure is applied where necessary to assist the natural ability of the body to release stresses and tensions. Gary Sharp, a well known Osteopath who practices cranial and has treated many babies and toddlers is now based in Christleton village. If you would like to book an initial consultation or if you would just like to know more about how cranial might be able to help your child; contact Gary on 078 248 32120. 20

he fine weather we’ve experienced this summer has brought a most welcome change in the breeding success of many bird species. The most remarkable recovery has been that of the barn owl. Last year was a disastrous time for them with only a tiny proportion of birds producing young. This year has been the complete reverse. The relatively warm winter, with sunny spring and early summer has seen vegetation grow at enormous rates. This in turn has encouraged the breeding population of small mammals of mice, voles and shrews, leading to an increased food supply for all species of owl. Tawny and Little Owls have been seen and heard more regularly than usual, but the most dramatic success has been the increase in numbers of barn owls. Nest boxes locally have contained four, five and six young owlets, and the sight of seeing them all learning to fly has been thrilling. At dusk on several occasions I’ve watched as they’ve ventured onto the ledge of their nest box, shuffled around for ten minutes or so, with much twisting and turning of heads, before trying to launch themselves into space. One, perhaps the larger of the three, flapped with great energy and managed to get up to the ridge of the box. The second managed to glide down to a nearby branch, and the third flapped frantically, launched itself into space and flopped straight to the ground! This smaller pure white faced owlet, then tried wing flapping for many minutes to gain enough lift to get back to the safety of the box. Meanwhile one of the adults had been searching the meadows for food and brought an instant meal to the owlets sitting, listening, with much head turning on the bare branch. This pattern of behaviour happened for several nights before they all became 24

proficient fliers, and could then be seen hunting for themselves. Flying and gliding with a ghost like appearance, silently across the wide expanse of the big meadow before coming to a sudden halt, hovering for a short while then diving onto an unsuspecting prey below. A magical and wonderful sight to see, even for the experienced observer. Let’s hope the recovery in owl numbers continues. Little Owl/Tawny Owlet/Barn Owl top - bottom

Sun kissed skin for Summer! Top tips from Tropic Skincare Ambassador Marie-Claire.
S
ummer is a time when we want our skin to look its best. We don’t want to hide under heavy make up and we’re looking for a more fresh faced sun kissed look. So what are the tricks to achieving that healthy natural glow?
•Use natural skincare products that will feed your skin. (Did you know that a skin care product can call itself natural with only 3% natural ingredients so its worth checking the small print!) •Remember to cleanse tone and moisturise religiously every night for clear skin! •Use a mineral powder foundation with a full Kabuki brush so that it is perfectly blended, and gives great coverage but with a really natural look •Use a mineral bronzing powder to add that sun-kissed glow •Don’t forget to define your eyebrows with a natural powder (foundation, blush and eyebrow definition adds a natural lift to any face without looking too heavy) •Keep your mascara and eyeliner light for a natural daytime look If you can, its always best to try out any new make up first, especially when you’re looking for a new summer foundation colour.
That’s why this month we re giving away a total of ten free at home facial and make–overs with Tropic Skincare Ambassador Marie-Claire!
All you need to do is email your name, email address and phone number to westviewpublications@gmail.com. In the meantime you can find out more about Tropic Skincare Pure Plant Beauty at www.marieclairecarlyle.com/Tropic

ometimes, you just know you’re going to do something you shouldn’t and will regret it afterwards, but you still do it anyway don’t you?
Well that happened to me in the Vets the other day. Sam and I had been taken for our annual MOT’s and I can report we are both in good health and neither of us had to go through the indignity of that thingy up the bum. Naturally, as the senior dog, I had been taken in first, while Sam fretted in the car. Don’t get me wrong he’d be fretting in case I was having something to eat and he wasn’t, not because we were at the Vets. Anyway, when Tony the Vet had finished with me, Him-indoors took me back into the waiting room on his way to fetch Sammy from the car. And that’s where it happened and I’m ashamed to say I once did something similar to two dogs in Pets at Home only to find out that they were collecting money to train more dogs for blind people. Some of us never learn. You see, I’ve always been wary of strange dogs after I was mugged when I was a pup. So I get my retaliation in first these days. Fortunately, Him-indoors knows me well and was able to stop me having a go at a very sick poorly dog lying on the floor. Oh the humiliation I felt when I realised what I’d done. And Him and Her-indoors weren’t very pleased either. Sammy of course was the perfect gentleman and just walked past the poorly dog. Grrrrr! Love,
Polly xxx

From your Personal Travel Counsellor TRACEY TWEEDLE From skyscrapers to museums and department stores, New York is the city that does it bigger, louder and faster than any other. It can overwhelm even the most experienced traveller. But coming down to earth to New York is easy. Just hop on a bus on Broadway and sit alongside the native New Yorkers and watch as, block by block, the bus turns from leafy Central Park, through the neon-lit theatre district to the heart of downtown trendiness. There are few better ways of finding out how compact and user-friendly Manhattan is. New York is a city best experienced at ground level where you can balance museums and sight-seeing with visits to pretzel carts and watching a neighbourhood basketball game. At the other end of Manhattan, but still only half an hour by subway, is the Lower East Side. This was where most European immigrants ended up living. Across the water from Brooklyn, it nurtured such talents as the Marx Brothers and the Gershwins in its slum tenement housing. Today, it is home to one of New York's most enjoyable museums, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, where the history of those who lived in the apartments has been researched and recreated. You'll have to book ahead but it's an unforgettable visit. Sightseeing - If you are planning major sightseeing, think about buying a CityPass. It costs a fair amount but offers savings and minimises queuing at the American Museum of Natural History, the Museum of Modern Art, the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum, the Empire State Building and the Guggenheim. Free on Friday - If you want to gain entry to New York's pricier museums without paying an entrance fee, keep Friday evening clear. Both the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney offer free entry on Friday evenings. Tipping - Tipping is a way of life. Double the tax part of your restaurant bill to know the amount you ought to leave. Tip a dollar a drink in a bar. Have a stash of dollar bills at hand to tip doormen, taxi drivers and chambermaids.

Scary But True....... The Cupboard
Shortly after opening our family business THOMAS PROPERTY GROUP 10 years ago, we were asked to sell an old hotel on the outskirts of Chester. Now this hotel was rather run down and not been in use for 2 years. The owner sent us keys so that we could do our measure, professional photos and floorplans etc. I remember as if only it was yesterday the murky dark weather, black thundering clouds and an eerie howling wind. Pulling up to the front of the hotel I thought I saw a figure in the window, obviously it was just the trick of the light and a vivid imagination! Walking up to the front entrance I was surrounded by overgrown weeds and ivy. At only 5ft 2 myself these nearly matched me in height!, it was like they had swallowed me up, I couldn’t even see the driveway anymore. Turning the key in the lock, the door groaned eerily. Starting from the ground floor I began our usual process. Occasionally I would hear the sound of footsteps which I dismissed as probably part of the noises old properties make. On descending the staircase, the floorboards creaked on every step, as I looked up I again thought I saw a shadow at the end of the landing but quickly realised it was just from the mop and bucket that had been left by the cleaners that morning. The hotel had many bedrooms and one in the attic! On ascending the metal staircase into this last room, my heels clanged against the hard cold metal. Entering this room a strong overpowering smell of jasmine enveloped me. I looked around for any candles or air freshener that the cleaners may have left. There was nothing. I quickly took the pictures and details needed, suddenly there was a loud thud. I must have jumped half way across the room but what happened next was even more shocking..................
A lady crawled out of the cupboard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! With my heart racing, I was rooted to the spot. That was until she walked over to me dressed in black with her hand extended, a wide smile on her face. Apparently she had been living there for the previous 5 months!. The touch of her hand convinced me she was not an apparition-or was she? Peering into the cupboard I could see she had made a bed for herself, taking one of the remaining duvets left behind at the hotel. The smell of Jasmine was her body spray that lay at the side of her pillow. I called the owner to inform him and he very kindly spoke to the homeless shelter in Chester for the lady and promptly changed all his locks on his windows for in case she returned. A happy ending for the mystery of the Lady In The Cupboard!

SEAT IBIZA ST FR ACT
Driving with David Parry-Jones Nice size, lovely shape and what a performer - SEAT’s new Active Cylinder Technology Ibiza, in FR and ST form. MODEL: SEAT Ibiza ST FR EMISSIONS: 109g/km ENGINE: 1,397cc 16v 4-cyl 0-62: In 8.1 seconds PRICE: £16,190 FUEL: 60.1mpg average POWER: 138bhp MARKS OUT OF 100: 89 TORQUE: 250Nm APART from its clever Active Cylinder Technology that alternates, in less than 40 milliseconds, between two and four cylinder modes depending on the power required, there’s a super clever Garmin SatNav included with every new SEAT Ibiza ST FR. TAKE IT WITH YOU ~ Only half an inch thick and detachable, so you can slip it in your pocket to find your way round a new to you city, it does far more than navigate for you in this sporty Ibiza. Custom built for SEAT, when back in its sling, it tells you which door has been let open, what height you are at, what the outside temperature is and what radio programme you are listening to. LOTS MORE INCLUDED ~ It is also a darned good navigation tool, right in front of your eyes, and comes as standard at this £16,570 level of Ibiza. So does power steering, remote locking, stability control, pretty alloys, air conditioning, electric mirrors and windows and cruise control. And that’s a lot of spec for your shillings! TWO OR FOUR CYLINDERS ~ But back to the Active Cylinder Technology on this new variant. As well as alternating between two and four cylinders, it means there’s no compromise on power. Combined with Start Stop and energy recovery systems, the new 1.4 TSI ACT engine is capable of achieving an impressive fuel average of 60.1mpg with prices starting from £15,920. 8.1 SECS TO 62MPH ~ Now that’s the technology dealt with, what performance can you expect from its 1.4-litre petrol engine? Well it reaches 62mph in a sizzling 8.1 seconds, with terrific mid-range acceleration over 1,750rpm. 595 MILES ON FULL TANK ~ With a top speed of 130mph and an impressive full tank range of 595 miles, the car grips the road as well as anything I’ve tested, but with slightly harder suspension than normal to match its sporty image and performance. GOOD LUGGAGE AREA ~ The test car only let itself down by being a three-door model, with large doors to open in tight car parks and that inevitable wriggle to get in the rear. But it had a healthy sized hatch and generous boot and those rear seats flattened easily to enlarge your luggage area. LOW ON EMISSIONS ~ The 1,397cc, four cylinder and 16-valve TFI engine produced 138bhp of power and 250Nm of torque with that low 109g/km of emissions, and sounded so sweet and felt so flexible, after testing a succession of diesel units. NEAT AND TIDY CAB ~ Worthy of separate mention is the incredibly neat and tidy cab on Ibiza ST FR. Look up and be impressed by the shaped, fabric, light coloured roof lining. It brings the cab alive. COMES AS STANDARD ~ Standard equipment on this ACT variant includes a dust and pollen filter; 14-inch steel wheels with Cosovo covers; tinted windows; speed senstive power steering; engine immobiliser; electronic speed control and emergemcy brake assist. FULL OF CHARACTER ~ This is an ultra modern car, oozing with character and a cab like a well finished lounge. Couple to that the 250Nm of torque and superb roadholding and you are getting near to perfection in a medium size family car.
thomaspropertygroup.co.uk
ANY BAD POINTS? ~ Just the access with those three doors. But otherwise this is a sturdy, reliable Volkswagen with a SEAT badge. And, at £16,190, that cannot be bad! 46

Summertime has arrived at Tarporley Hospital. The last few weeks have seen many changes to the War Memorial Hospital, here in Tarporley. With thanks to Okells Garden Centre, who have supported the new patio/vegetable garden for our day care clients. As you can see the Garden area is looking great outside. Patients have been doing exercises outside with the physio team, and our day care have been tending the vegetable raised beds and playing bowls on the lawn. As part of their” Dare to Make a Difference Project” two teams of volunteers from Lloyds Banking Group came to support the hospital by painting and gardening. We really are indebted to all those who gave their time for free and had such an impact on the hospital – thank you. If you feel you may have a few hours to spare each week, and have an interest in gardening, or any other aspect of volunteering, we would love to hear from you, please contact the fundraising team on 01829 732436. Come and see for yourselves – a date for your diary! Vintage Garden Party, here in the hospital grounds Saturday 13th September 2014 1pm till 4pm Hope to see you - look out for the posters COMING SOON!

A Final Thought … one too many beers in the afternoon!
I
t’s becoming a bit of a local institution, the third Saturday in July is now the regular slot for the West Cheshire Beer Festival, held at the Spitting Feathers brewery in Waverton. Just back from another enjoyable afternoon, and a few (still slightly oiled) lessons to pass on from this year’s edition; • Don’t let the weather deter you – despite a previous week of glorious weather, the forecast for this Saturday was not promising, steady rain and indeed thunderstorms were forecast. The event organisers made the necessary arrangements, moving as much as possible into barns, or under tents, but in the end the weather was relatively kind • Don’t worry how far you have to travel – we might have got there by a simple walk along the canal from Christleton, but clearly a longer journey didn’t deter many of the other revellers. In particular a group of four guys in Lederhosen who’d made it all the way from Austria (pictorial evidence provided) • Don’t underestimate the popularity of a canine companion – for the second year running Oscar was a major hit with a huge proportion of the beer festival audience. Sorry to those whose burgers or ribs he sniffed out too enthusiastically, but a big thank you to the many who not only fussed him but willingly provided him with a sample of said culinary delights • Don’t buy too many beer vouchers – with a huge selection of real ales available, from right across Cheshire, and a number of “foreign” beers from further afar, it’s very easy to keep trying “just another half”. This year’s personal favourite (I think!) was the Great Heck Blond from North Yorkshire, one of the interlopers (sorry Cheshire), and finally • Don’t miss the entertainment – accompanying the beer and food there’s always great music. This year (again!) we enjoyed The Reads, playing songs from their recently released album Lost at Sea (see iTunes or Spotify). They always play the afternoon slot, to make sure they can partake fully of the beer in the evening, which I’m confident they’re doing as I write! A final thought ... while glad we haven’t got tickets for the evening session as well (which could get really messy!) this was another great event, and it’s already going on the calendar again for next year.

ADVICE ON WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR WITH ESTATE AGENTS
Beware of; Promising to sell in a certain time frame
Any agent that tells you they can sell your property within a certain time frame They are simply telling you what they know you want to hear to gain the instruction. No agent can possibly know this, it is a sales technique that dishonest agents use to get you onto their books. Watch out especially for any business cards and flyers put through your door which states they can sell your house within a short period or sell in your area when they have not. This also shows they aren’t busy with their own properties to sell and are focussing on someone else’s instead.
Targeting other agents
Some agents are known for targeting other agents properties. Be very careful of these. If they have time to be researching the competitions properties then they are either not focusing enough on their own stock to sell (POSSIBLY YOUR PROPERTY) or they simply aren’t busy selling or in demand. When targeting other agents properties it involves alot of research, including locating the other agent’s brochures, printing these and marking throughout them what they think they could do better. Don’t be fooled, remember it is very easy to proofread anyone work but to actually create these brochures is another matter altogether and you may want to check there standard of usual brochures first. Some of them even use photographs done by other agents and in breach of copyright.
Over Valuing
Certain agents have become known for over-valuing; you only need to look in your village to see which agents these are. You will see them straight away, they are the ones with the For Sale signs up with no solds and for long periods of time. Agents know that the most important thing for any client is to achieve as much money from their sale as possible. And therefore many agents use this knowledge as a way of manipulating you into selling your property with them. Be very careful of these, you will most likely not achieve the figure they quote you and we usually see these properties stay on the market with those agents for sometimes 1-3 years resulting in a sale agreed far less than what the realistic agent quoted you. Over-valuing causes a lot of damage and unnecessary loss to the sellers so make sure you choose an agent known for selling reasonably quickly in your area or neighbouring locations at good prices. If you have anything you would like to read about in our articles please email me on rachel@thomaspropertygroup.co.uk or simply drop in to our Rural or City showroom. Best Wishes, Rachel Thomas
