Welcome
to the June issue,
It has been a bit traumatic getting this month’s issue out as my pc was infected with a virus on deadline day, hopefully there’ll be no glaring errors and it makes it to your letterboxes in time! If you spot anything wrong - sorry! Enjoy the world cup if you like football and thanks to Liam Walsh for sending this gorgeous photo in! See you next month, Julie
Please recycle me!
The A41 is delivered free each month to homes and businesses in Littleton, Waverton, Rowton, Christleton, Aldford, Saighton along the A41 and distributed in Huxley and Tattenhall. Summer Roses in The Garden l
J
une is a wonderful month for roses which are superb for both their colour and scent. If you want flowers for cutting then the hybrid tea roses with long stems are best. If you want a shrub rose that looks good in a border then I recommend the English Roses from David Austin. These roses are bred especially for their scent and the difference in fragrance is quite surprising. These roses have multiple blooms on stems and usually repeat flowering. Resistance to disease is also a priority with English Roses and I look for good glossy leaves too.
Or does it?
Underplant roses with low growing perennial geraniums such as Geranium Wargrave Pink which will flower twice in a year if you cut off the flowering stems after the first flush of flowers. Other scent comes from Dianthus known as Carnations or Pinks and some of these can have a strong heady fragrance so put them somewhere you can smell them! They like an alkaline, well drained soil and do well in pots in the sun. Another beautiful smell comes from the Philadelphus shrub especially the varieties Belle Etoile or Philadelphus coronaries. One shrub will give fragrance to an enclosed space so plant next to a seating area. Maintenance tasks to do include cutting back brooms or Cytisus, aubretia and spring flowering heathers after flowering. In the vegetable garden plant more fast growing crops like spinach and salad leaves choosing types that are resistant to bolting. Hot dry weather causes plants to bolt such as Chinese leaves and beetroot. Make sure your strawberries are mulched with straw and netted to protect from birds. If you would like to visit gardens for ideas, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. On Sunday 22nd June visit Bowmere Cottage in Tarporley to see an English country garden with scented roses, herbaceous borders and two courtyard gardens. Also open is 150 Barrell Well Hill in Chester, a garden on a slope overlooking the Dee with free draining soil and a stream running down. There are terraces containing a wide variety of shrubs, unusual flowers and a bog garden.

Night Sky in June 2014
Venus is visible as a brilliant “star” in the early mornings E-SCAPE low in the eastern sky. The waning crescent moon will be close by in the twilight dawn of the 24th.
UK
Mars is still a bright evening object in the constellation of Virgo, but is fading as its distance from Earth increases through the month. Mars will set around midnight by month’s end. The moon will be close on 7th June. Jupiter is visible as a bright “star” after sunset but now sets before midnight. It is in the constellation of Gemini and by the end of the month will have moved south of the two main stars, Castor and Pollux, in Gemini. Saturn is visible in the south-south-east as the sun sets and is visible for most of the night. The rings of Saturn are “open” and make a marvellous sight in a small telescope. The planet is further to the east and not as bright as Mars, and can be found very close to the moon on the 10th June. Mercury is too faint to be seen this month. Summer solstice occurs on June 21 when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky and daylight has its longest duration of the year. Geoff Chamberlain

Wildlife Watch with David Cummings
Wildflowers of the Countryside
W
ildflowers growing in the countryside this spring seem to have had a head start after the very wet but warm winter. They, like the wonderful blossom on trees in the gardens have been early and profuse. They first to appear on the meadow were the lady smock, sometimes called cuckoo pint or May flower, which this year appeared well before May, in fact early April. These delicate pink or light lilac flowers are the food plant of the first butterfly to appear, the orange tip, which also feeds on nearby ragged robin. These rather strange plants, beautiful pink flowers with fifteen points on their flowering heads, can often be found together with the smaller pink but more rounded flowers of red/pink campion. The bright yellow marsh marigold is another profuse and early flowering plant, and is soon joined by delicate yellow cowslips with their tiny bell like flowers on dropped heads. Later in nearby ponds and ditches, the larger vivid and striking flowers of yellow flag iris can be seen. Meanwhile along the margins of woodland or lanes are the pretty white flowers of stitchwort, lesser stitchwort and wood anemone, which will soon be joined by the spiky white flowers of the aromatic wild garlic and in many places by colourful beds of bluebells. All these flowers are special and make our wildlife areas come alive each spring. As mentioned earlier, some are food plants for butterflies and other insects, and this is particularly true of the May or hawthorn blossom. In spring the beautiful white blossom attracts holly blue, red admiral and tortoishell butterflies, to be replaced in autumn when the flowers have been transformed into bright red berries, providing food for hundreds of hungry redwing and fieldfare, migratory thrushes, that come to these shores from Scandinavia, for our “warmer winters. 20

Not only does it stop the panel being removed, but it will also stop the annoying rattle that sometimes occurs when panels move in the post slot in strong wind. This is a nice neat and tidy solution, that only takes minutes, but can save a lot of grief. What if you have concrete posts? These are obviously a bit more problematic as it’s not easy to secure the panels, unless the posts have holes that allow bolts or screws to go through to hold the panels in place.
Screwing a torx head rust resistant screw through the fence post into the rail
Other options will not look overly attractive and are a little ‘bodged’, but it’s better than someone being able to lift your panels out and steal them! The most popular option is to screw a metal bracket or mending plate into the panel across the post and then into the next panel. Another option is to screw into the panel as close to the posts as possible, so that the screws are against the post. This will make it difficult to lift the panels. As before, make sure all fixings are rust resistant and secure from the inner side of the fence.

SEAT LEON ST FR 2.0 TDI... IN BRIEF: MODEL: SEAT Leon ST FR ENGINE: 1,968cc TDI diesel PRICE: £23,380 (+ £27,325) POWER: 181bhp@4,000rpm New SEAT Leon, here as a top of the range 2.0 TDI ST FR, with its sharp edges on body design, mirrors and YOU should always listen to motoring colleagues when they tell you what last impressed them. So when a second one stressed I should try SEAT’s new Leon ST in FR trim, that was all it was needed for me to pick up the phone. RACES UP TO 62MPH And boy I am mighty glad I did. This innovative model, with attitude, races to 62mph in only 7.4 seconds, is the latest in 21st century style, manages to average 67.3mpg while emitting only 109g/km, and must be the height of efficiency. SO LIGHT TO DRIVE Not only is it possibly the lightest car to drive, but those mean and green figures are stunning and this is one fun car to pilot. It is the epitomy of good design, is comfy and a delight to be in and, surely, getting nearly 70mpg from a speedster is unique. AND STARTS AT £15,850 The popular Leon range, in this same shape, starts as low as £15,850 for the S1.2 103bhp TSI, while the sporty ST starts at £16,675. Not only was the ST FS test car a bit pricey at £23,380 but it was fitted with £3,945 worth of extras, like £1,195 leather sports seats, £700 18-inch alloys, a £250 SET sound system with huge speakers and £295 high beam and lane assist, among others. SPECTACULAR SOUND That sound system is worthy of special mention with its 10 speakers and sub woofer in the boot, as it has a 135 watt, six channel amplifier that can wake up the neighbourhood. WAKE YOU UP SPEED If you have the courage to test this 181bhp beast, then expect some pretty outrageous mid-range acceleration. Slap your foot down and there’s an instant bang in your back as Leon ST FS obeys. Swop your foot to the brake and it stops just as impressively. LOADS OF FR EXTRAS If you upgrade to FR trim you get electrically folding door mirrors, tinted rear windows, twin chrome exhausts, leather steering wheel with red stitching, dual zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors, eight speakers and sports suspension for more assured cornering. WHEELS TO MATCH Also you need to know the ST FR’s alloys are ‘Performance’ machined and take 225/40 tyres and that you get titanium coloured folding door mirrors. DO ADD THE LEATHER The test car was fitted with £1,195 worth of perforated leather seating and steering wheel and the reasonably priced convenience pack, at £150, included rain sensing wipers plus auto dimming inside mirror. FOR POWER ADDICTS It is a true performance car, for those who thrive on power and quite deceitful to other drivers who might think it is the same shaped 1.2 model. So keep your eye out for the rear badge as this car reaches 60mph in seven seconds. ANY BAD POINTS? Only possibly the price, but you are getting a performance model with sports seats and plenty of attitude! 28

Polly ~ The Blogging Boxer
I
Sussed!
’m not admitting to anything else mind. Ok, so I was caught bang to rights on Sunday morning but that’s all I’ll admit to. Trouble is, in being caught out on Sunday another myth this miss had successfully perpetuated might also have gone by the board. Let me explain. When I was young not much more than a pup, I used to jump into the back of Him-indoors car. One day I miss-judged it, over confidence I suppose, and banged my back leg so hard it made me yelp. Him-indoors, being kind was very sympathetic. Seeing my hesitancy at jumping in next time he assumed that it was because I was frightened of hurting my leg again, (actually I was trying to work out just what sort of bird it was sitting on the wall), so he lifted me in and has done so ever since and I’ve let him do it. Now then, when Sam came to live with us he would just jump in the back of the car no problem. I of course was lifted in having carefully nurtured the belief that I can’t jump, even to the extent of climbing onto the sofa in a rather laborious manner. Sam insisting it wasn’t him sleeping on the bed..... So, who do you think was getting the blame for sleeping on Him and Herindoors bed when we were left alone in the house? It could only be Sam as I couldn’t possible jump up that high could I? And it could only be Sam who was big enough and strong enough to barge his way through the shut door. But all good things must come to an end. There was I so fast asleep last Sunday morning that I didn’t hear Him-indoors coming upstairs. Bit sneaky that don’t you think? Love Polly xxx 32

Somerville’s are Bringing Art to the Street Spotted: A Klimt in Boughton, a Renoir in Upton and a Constable in Hoole! Somerville’s estate Agents are bringing well known works of art to the street with their arty ‘For Sale’ boards. The unique boards feature paintings from well-known artists and sellers are able to choose the masterpiece they want displayed outside their home. Richard Wheeler, one of the directors of Somerville’s said “We’re really pleased with how our ‘For Sale’ boards look. They’re a welcome and eye catching change from the normal run-of-the-mill boards that are out there.” He added “We like to stand out from the crowd and we want our properties to stand out too. We’ve had a lot of compliments about our art boards. People love them!” Mr Pugh from Handbridge said “We chose Van Gogh’s Irises for our board. It’s one of my favourite paintings. It’s such a clever idea to put these works of art on the ‘For Sale’ boards. It certainly makes a change from some of the ugly boards you see and brings some added interest to the street!”
BRAZIL….World Cup Fever
From your Personal Travel Counsellor TRACEY TWEEDLE World Cup fever is nearly upon us! The signs are starting to appear – football ads on TV, deals on beer and barbecue food, and even Licensing laws will be relaxed during the World Cup to allow pubs to stay open late during some England matches, the Home Office has said. But why make do with watching it on screen when the action is taking place half a world away in Brazil? Of course, it’s expensive and most tickets have already been allocated, and you would need to be extremely lucky to secure flights and accommodation – but for serious fans, there’s no better place to soak up the atmosphere. Once Brazil screens this summer and the excitement is over and the final whistle blows, Brazil will be well and truly in everyone’s mind and would be visitors will be itching to tick this country off their bucket list! From the Amazon to the curves of Copacabana’s crowds, Brazil is a celebration of the big, the bold and the beautiful. Brazil’s vast coastline is fringed with sandy beaches and island getaways, not to mention buzzing Rio de Janeiro with nightlife and culture galore – as well as an annual Carnival fever. You could spend months hopping from one sunbaked beach to the next, offshore islands add further temptation. It may be hard to drag yourself away from the coast, but this enormous country also offers many inland attractions. Not least the Amazon Basin, here you can lie in a hammock as you drift downstream on a steamboat, looking out for the occasional macaw. You could take a wildlife safari down a side-creek in a dugout canoe, or simply wonder at the luxurious Manaus Opera House, clad in Italian marble and sparkling with crystal chandeliers. The Iguaçu Falls, spanning the Argentinean border, is one of the natural wonders of the world. Some 275 waterfalls cascade from the tropical forest, as dazzling blue butterflies flit through the spray. Preparing to host the World Cup in 2014 and the 2016 Olympics coming to Rio, the largest country in South America is gearing up to take centre stage. Whether you’re strolling down orderly São Paulo avenues, or kicking back in chic coastal resorts, you’ll discover Brazil that is confidently rising to the challenge. www.travelcounsellors.co.uk/tracey.tweedle tracey.tweedle@travelcounsellors.com

thomas talk
Now everyone is flocking to us!!!
Most of us dislike Monday mornings, but this week I came into the office to a nice surprise. I had been emailed photographs of a beautiful Kingfisher happily sitting on our THOMAS PROPERTY sign. We were delighted to receive the stunning pictures from Eric and Linda Lucas who managed to take the incredible shots and very thoughtfully sent us them to enjoy. Kingfishers are one of Britain’s most interesting birds. A flash of blue, gone in a second, that’s the usual view of these fantastic little birds. With beautiful blues, turquoise and greens they even match our company colours! They are usually found around water – canals, streams, rivers and ponds. MAYBE WE SHOULD CHANGE OUR FOR SALE BOARDS TO INCLUDE THIS BEAUTIFUL LITTLE VISITOR ~ WHAT DO YOU THINK? Best Wishes, Rachel Thomas

Local Produce Fair & Open Farm Sunday ~ Come along to our local produce fair on Saturday each week between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Where you can buy lots of great local food and garden plants as part of your weekly shop. By popular demand we have changed the times on Fridays and our local produce fair takes place from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. so you can call in on your way home from work and stock up for the weekend. We now have honey so local that some of the bees which produce it for the Chester Honey Company live in hives within 500 metres of the farm. There will be an additional local produce fair on 8th June from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. as part of Open Farm Sunday, when other activities will include rural and garden crafts in Trafford Mill Kitchen Garden, tours of Mickle Trafford Water Mill and guided farm tours. You can find full details by visiting www.farmsunday.org You can also book a free farm visit for six or more people at any time. These visits are funded by Natural England. Cattle Moos ~ Cows are now calving with 15 born to date and another 35 due over the next month or so. All the Red Polls are out in the fields enjoying fresh grass and warm weather and can be seen from the permissive and public footpath network. The heifers (young females) are due to be vaccinated against another cattle specific disease this week, and all the cows to be treated in another month before the bulls join them for breeding in July. For Ernie, Frodo and Twoby this is the highlight of their year! The frustration and standstill because of Bovine Tuberculosis continues, and the whole herd is now due to be tested again at the end of May. If this test is clear we will be able to sell some animals to other Red Poll breeders; if not they will continue to eat grass intended for mowing as silage with the risk that we will be short of feed in the coming Winter as well as lacking sufficient housing for them. Signs ~ Thanks are due to Cheshire Wildlife Trust and to Country Living Magazine for new signs which will soon be prominent by the farm entrance, replacing the existing signs which have become something of an eyesore and are overdue retirement, and making the farm easier to find. Modern sat-nav systems believe that the farm is actually at Plemstall Church and continue to mislead despite efforts to persuade their manufacturers and programmers otherwise. For more information about anything to do with the farm please email huw.rowlands145@btinternet.com or call 07950 963526. If you like Twitter please follow @redpollbeef for a daily dose of cattle and controversy.

Waverton Village Fete 2014 – Saturday July 5 on the Village Playing Field The Rose Queen Procession will assemble at the top end of Ringway at 12.45pm with the Fete opening at 1.30pm on the field. Entrance £1.00 for adults and £0.50 pence for children. We were blessed with a lovely day last year and are hoping for fabulous sunshine again this year! The Fete Procession will be led by the Sambadouro Band and the theme this year will be The World Cup. We’d like to invite children (and adults) to dress in something that reflects that; perhaps in the costume or colours of a country taking part or in their football kit…the sky’s the limit! The organisations in the village are busy working on their stalls and sideshows and there will be a baking competition (full details on village notice boards)music, drama, a fairground, climbing wall, children’s sports, tombola, beer and wine, afternoon tea, burgers & hot dogs, ice-creams…..in fact everything that makes for a fantastic English summer event. Come along and share in the fun! Last year following the success of the Fete, a donation was given to all the uniformed organisations and to the Friday Club. A donation of £1,000 has also been agreed to support the new Play Park initiative (information about the proposals for the Play Park will be available at the Fete). We continue to welcome applications for funding support from village organisations.

Did you know THOMAS PROPERTY GROUP are the busiest Letting Agents in Chester! Thomas Property Group is a family run Estate and Letting Agency with offices
based in Chester City Centre and Waverton. Having let the most properties in the area it’s fair to say we know a thing or two about letting houses and we can happily say that the market is more buoyant than ever! A recent study from the Intermediary Mortgage Lenders Association (IMLA) has predicted that over half of UK homes will be rented by 2032 based upon the current market growth so now is a fantastic time to invest in a buy to let property. Thomas’s are personally seeing a huge demand for rental homes, and with hundreds of active applicants on our books we are always looking for new landlords and new properties. We are currently number one for new listings, available stock and time for properties to be let on Rightmove as shown in the figures below. Our expert team of Sales and Lettings staff would be happy to provide more information on our services so to find out more about buy-to-let properties or to book a free rental valuation on your current property please contact us on 01244 311119 (Option 2) or email lettings@thomaspropertygroup. co.uk and quote ‘A41’.
