Hello and welcome

We are now entering the month of May, where hopefully the weather heats up and we have more days of sunshine and less downpours of rain. I hope you had a lovely Easter break, this month we also have two Bank Holidays one at the beginning of the month and Spring Bank holiday at the end, which can’t be a bad thing! In 1834 there were just four “festivals or religious days” - 1 May, 1 November, Good Friday, and Christmas Day. The Bank Holidays Act of 1871 introduced additional days because Liberal Politician and Banker, Sir John Lubbock, was an enthusiastic supporter of cricket and was firmly of the belief that bank employees should have the opportunity to participate in and attend matches when they were scheduled and so the act was passed. At least we have something to thank the banks for! Let’s hope the weather keeps warm and sunny, Julie

Please recycle me! ROWTON PARISH COUNCIL PARISH COUNCILLOR VACANCY Are you a Rowton resident and care about the village’s appearance and quality of life? If so, have you considered being a Parish Councillor, as there is a vacancy on Rowton Parish Council? We are only a small (but important!) Council – the work is not onerous and wouldn’t take up too much of your time. If you would like further information please email the Parish Clerk, Christine Davies at rowtonclerk@hotmail.co.uk or telephone 01244 335996.

The Studio Tattenhall raised £120 for the WWF Earth Hour on 29th March with a candle lit Nia class to Medicine Woman. Many thanks to everyone who donated.

May Blossom

ay brings out the myriad of varieties of Rhododendrons

which can range in size from large shrubs to smaller compact shrubs suitable for smaller gardens. If you have an acidic soil that is well drained yet moisture retentive and can give partial shade then smaller rhododendrons will provide a splash of colour and have evergreen foliage. The Rhododendron yakushimanum varieties will fit most gardens and look out for other smaller growing varieties to fit that shady spot.

Or

Another shrub that will flower reliably in late spring are Deutzias. These easy to grow shrubs are deciduous and have white or pink flowers. A tall variety is Pride of Rochester or for a smaller spot go for Rosalind. They do well in sun and a reasonably well drained soil but are generally not too fussy. Hostas come to their best in May when the foliage is still fresh and undamaged by slugs. You can have huge leaved Hostas like Big Daddy, or more delicate varieties like the one pictured named Sand Dune. I grow them in pots where they come back each year and every three years I tip them out, cut them up, replant and give pieces to friends. Irises are gorgeous with exotic delicate flowers. If you have moist soil, grow Iris sibirica with tall stems of white to blue flowers. In hot sun try Bearded Irises with Home and garden shop large blowsy flowers.

nettle

Jobs to get on with include pruning early flowered shrubs such as forsythia, Chaenomeles or Japanese quince and early flowering clematis. They will put on new growth for flowering next year. With the danger of frost being over, plant out Dahlia tubers and get your summer bedding plants in. Plant out tomatoes and courgettes, put in beans seeds and more salads. If you would like to visit gardens for ideas, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Tattenhall Hall has over 4 acres of gardens open on 25th May. For Rhododendrons go to Tirley Garth near Tarporley on 11th and 18th May for over 3000 rhododendrons.

Jacksons Fencing

- news, topical treats and more ...

Hooray - It’s May! As far as I’m concerned, May is the loveliest month of the year. The burgeoning buds burst into leaf and suddenly everything goes from looking like an old black and white movie to a Technicolor treat that is a feast for the eyes. It’s also one of the busiest months for us as everyone suddenly has the same idea at once and leaps out into their garden with renewed vigour to tackle their spring projects, like creating a new deck or pergola, or replacing the rickety fencing. Every year we try different ways to encourage people to think ahead, by making special offers of free delivery to beat the spring rush, but it still is a shock to the system when we hit record demands, yet again. This year has E-SCAPE been even crazier than usual with the added rush for panels after all the UK wicked winter storms. We’ve heard some amazing tales of panel shortages in the press. Like this in the Telegraph (24.3.14) “Gardeners have been hit by a national shortage of fences at the height of the DIY season – with panels changing hands for up to four times their usual price on the black market... Many DIY chains and hardware stores have run out of traditional lap fencing, which is being offered for up to £80 a panel to panic buyers…” obviously these are sensationalised stories, it’s crazy stuff if ever I heard it! Well I can say definitely that there’s no need for buying on the black market (wherever that is!). We are very pleased to report that there is no such shortage at Jacksons at present and stocks of all our very popular panels are abundant and available at their usual prices, not inflated ones! It is interesting to note that the stories mention panels being sold at four times their usual price of £80, seems steep indeed when you consider the inferior quality of fencing supplied by many DIY chains. Featherboard or closeboard is a bestseller - Jacksons featherboard 1.83m panels currently sell at £41.90 (exc VAT & delivery). A little pricier than the usual DIY chain price, but when

you consider Jacksons panels are very high quality, made from the best material, kiln dried and pressure treated softwood to give them a 25-year guarantee - which means a very low lifetime cost, it seems a no-brainer…

Tongue and Groove effect panels (horizontal) with premier square trellis topper panels

If you are in a position to spend more, look at what you could get for £80 - Jacksons premiumpanels - Tongue and Groove effect 1.83m are £84.45 (exc. VAT & delivery). These are beautifully designed with a morticed and tenoned frame for extra strength, the timber is planed all round and assembled with non-rust stainless steel fixings, not to mention the outstanding Jacksons 25 year Jakcure guarantee, why would you want to waste your money buying anything less? This isn’t just fencing – this is Jacksons Fencing! Louise For more info visit your local page:www.jacksons-fencing.co.uk/chesterlocal louise@jacksons-fencing.co.uk

Night Sky in May 2014

Mercury becomes visible this month in the north western sky just after sunset. This elusive planet is always difficult to spot but this month will be the most favourable time this year. Venus is visible as a brilliant star in the early mornings low in the south-eastern sky. The waning crescent moon will be close by in the twilight dawn of the 25th. Mars will be visible from sunset to dawn and south at midnight. It is unmistakable because of its bright red colour. Mars can be found in the constellation of Virgo west of the bright star Spica. The moon will be close to Mars on 11th May. As the month progresses and the distance of the planet from the Earth increases, Mars fades noticeably. Jupiter is still the brightest object apart from the moon in the night sky. It is in the constellation of Gemini and sets around midnight by the end of the month. The moon will be close to Jupiter on 4th May. Saturn reaches opposition to the sun on May 10th. This means that it rises as the suns sets and is therefore visible all night, in the constellation of Libra. The rings of Saturn are favourably placed, at an angle of 22o, and make a marvellous sight in a small telescope. The planet is further to the east and not as bright as Mars, and can be found very close to the full moon on the 14th May. Geoff Chamberlain

ell, we’ve been to the Vets again. Now don’t you worry, neither Sam nor I was ill. No needles for a change just those drops up our noses. So, that can only mean one thing – we’ve off to prison again. Can’t go to Auntie Sophie’s to stay the night as – and would you believe this – someone is staying with her THAT DOESN’T LIKE DOGS! At least this time I’ll have company as Sam and I are sharing a cell. Last time I was all by myself. Still there is a bright side to this you know. Him-indoors will feel guilty about it and as such he’s exploitable! Just think, all those biscuits coming our way when we get released! Now some gossip, Sam has a girlfriend! She’s called ‘Chloe’ and has come to live next door. She can’t take her eyes off him! Mind you I think we’ll have to re-christen her as ‘Chlodini,’ as she’s a right little escape artist, (‘spose she could come to jail with us and help us break out). Fortunately she comes into our garden and can’t get out, just rolls over in a swoon as Sam goes up to her. Honestly, I’ll have to have a word with her when she’s a bit older and remind her that us girls rule, boys do as we tell them, when we tell them! Finally, how about this for a picture, Sam’s opinion of football! Love Polly xxx

irds are probably most active in our gardens in April and May. Nest sites are being established and constructed, and territorial disputes settled. We currently have both house and hedge sparrows making nests in our hedge and roof, blue tits and wrens disputing a nest box, three robins fighting each other over territory, and long tailed tits making the occasional visit to the feeders. Blue tits are really clever in planning their breeding, as they seem to time the moment for their young to be born, with the emergence of tiny green caterpillars on nearby oak trees. It was once estimated that adult blue tits flew hundreds of miles, flying from nest box to food sources whilst bringing up a clutch of up of youngsters. Numbers of clutch size can vary, but I’ve seen as many as thirteen baby blue tits leave a nest box within a short period, only to see the last two stragglers emerge slowly and unsteadily and be predated by a sparrowhawk and a cat. One year we had blue tits and wrens fighting over the ownership of a nest box. It really was a ferocious fight, claw to claw with both pairs involved. Eventually the blue tits won, and the wrens later nested in the hedge. Starlings are also very active at present, not only feeding on a fat tower, but on crushed Chester RSPB Group 8am Saturday 17th May: Field trip to Great Orme, Llandudno. sunflower seeds. They also busy themselves around the garden, probing for grubs and worms, and often sit preening and singing from the top of our hedge. I love watching their shimmering colours as they preen. If they were less common we would probably think of them as being a very attractive bird. Robins can become very friendly when not disputing territory with each other, and will often come down to feed close by, if you are working in the garden. They also have a lovely song, but will be drowned out by the shrill call of a wren, which for its size, is probably the noisiest bird you will hear. However if you are lucky enough to have a pair of blackbirds or song thrushes nearby, you will be able to hear both species singing their beautiful melodious songs throughout the day.

Whole baked sea bass, roasted chilli new potatoes and a coriander salsa (to serve 4 people) Recipe of the month, from Willington Hall Hotel’s Head Chef, Ingredients

Edward Lloyd

4 whole sea bass 300-400g each 100g coriander 100g curly parsley 4 red onions 6 plum tomatoes 1 lemon (juice and zest) 1Kg new potatoes 2 red chillies 200ml olive oil Salt and Pepper

Method

① Remove the heads, gut and cut all fins off the sea bass (or get your local fish monger to do this for you) Score one side of the fish and place on a baking tray lined with grease proof paper. Drizzle the fish well with olive oil and seasoning. Place in the fridge until needed. Always make sure your fish is as fresh as possible. ② T o make the salsa de-seed and dice the tomatoes roughly. Don’t worry about removing the skin. Finely dice four red onions. Two of them are for the roast potatoes so set these aside. Finely chop the coriander with a sharp knife so you don’t bruise the leaf. Next zest the lemon then combined all ingredients in a large bowl including the juice of the lemon and half the olive oil. Season with salt and pepper to taste and cling film tightly and leave to infuse in the fridge. The salsa is always better prepared 24hr earlier as the flavours need time to get to their full potential. ③ Place the new potatoes in a pan adequate for the potatoes to boil. Use jersey royals if in season. When there’re soft drain them off in a colander. Place them in a none stick baking tray. Crush each one with the back of a spoon so that the oil and chillies infuse into the potatoes as they roast. Finely slice the chillies with the seeds and red onions set aside earlier, mix with the partly crushed spuds. Drizzle the remaining olive oil on the potatoes and season well. Mix everything on the tray before placing in a fan oven. Roast for 20min on 180 degrees turning every few minutes so the onion and chillies don’t burn. Finish the potatoes with finely chopped parsley. The sea bass will take between 10-12min at 180 degrees. This is a nice rustic dish. The kick from the potatoes goes well with the sweetness of the salsa. To complement the dish look for a refreshing zesty white wine to balance the delicate fish flavours such as grant burge – pinot grigio south Australia £3.95 125ml- £19.75 a bottle at the hotel.

Try it at home yourself - ‘or go to Willington Hall to taste it prepared freshly for you by Edward!” Willington Hall Hotel, Willington, Tarporley, Chester,CW6 0NB Tel. 01829 752 321/enquiries@willingtonhall.co.uk/www.willingtonhall.co.uk 22

Ring O’ Bells, Christleton The 2014 Pizza Idol winner is announced!

T

he cook off final took place at the Ring O’ Bells on Thursday 27 March with Tamsin O’Keefe taking the top spot. Three pupils from Christleton Primary School and three from Waverton Primary School came along to the Ring O’ Bells to turn their pizza ideas into reality. Together with the pizza chef they created their ideas and experienced what it is like to cook in a professional kitchen. Each pupil created a pizza that was unique and delicious so it proved extremely hard for owner Ian Wade and Head Chef Andy King to choose a winner. However, a winner had to be chosen and eventually it was decided that Tamsin O’Keefe, from Christleton Primary School deserved to be crowned Pizza Idol 2014. Tamsin created a blue cheese, bacon, pepper, spinach, red onion and mozzarella pizza which she has called Chunk of Cheshire and will be featured on the Ring O’ Bells new spring/summer menu. The standard of the finalists was so strong this year that there will also be a “Pizza Idol Pizza” on the new children’s menu created by Joe Tabbener of Waverton Primary School. His creation with a bacon, cheddar, mozzarella and tomato topping was another real hit with our judges. Owner Ian Wade said “Every year the quality of the entries gets stronger & 2014 was another great year Thanks to everyone involved, we can’t wait to get the pizzas on our new menu!” Thanks must go to the team at the Ring O’ Bells for organising the event again, the pupils for their imaginative ideas and a special thanks to David Harker of Christleton Primary & Sue Buckley of Waverton Primary for their support and involvement. LANZAROTE….Holiday like the Cameron’s

From your Personal Travel Counsellor TRACEY TWEEDLE Lanzarote is more commonly associated with a package holiday and the news that David Cameron had chosen to spend his Easter break here was treated with snooty negativity by some people. But head away from the busy tourist resorts of Playa Blanca and Puerto Del Carmen and the north of the island is practically deserted, a dramatic volcanic landscape dotted with a handful of traditional whitewashed villages. Lanzarote offers some of Europe’s best surfing, with no shortage of places that are willing to hire out boards or even coach you. The Cameron’s holidayed in a villa near the old capital; Teguise.Teguise is a pretty little town, with a good choice of restaurants offering traditional Canarian cuisine. There are many places to explore on the island, the Timanfaya volcano park is a truly amazing sight, it can easily be reached by either car or by one of the many organised coach tours the guided tours take you through this awesome array of petrified laval flows. Despite the Volcanic nature of the island, Lanzarote has several beautiful white beaches such as those at Playa Blanca, Papagayo and Caleton Blanco. If it’s the surf beaches you want then head to the island’s best surf beaches at Famara or Orzola, where the black cliffs provided a spectacular backdrop for watching the surfers tackle the waves. While there are excellent family hotels in Playa Blanca, Puerto Del Carmen and Costa Teguise, away from the resorts there is also a wide range of low-key places to stay. You can choose from boutique hotels, apartments, bungalows built in the traditional style and village houses. Situated just 79 miles off the coast of Africa, Lanzarote is the most easterly of the Canary Islands. The island is 37 miles (60km) long and 12 miles (20 km) wide, making it the fourth largest island in the Canaries. Lanzarote enjoys a mild dry climate with average daytime temperatures ranging from about 21°C in January to 29°C in August . With total annual rainfall at just 140mm (5.5 inches), Lanzarote is the perfect year-round holiday destination. www.travelcounsellors.co.uk/tracey.tweedle / 0845 058 8073 / tracey.tweedle@travelcounsellors.com

The Duchess of Waverton JOY BIGGLESTONE: 17.08.1922 – 16.02.2014

he family moved to the village in 1959 and Joy joined the WI and was president from 1966 to 1968. Joy was a much loved and respected lady within the community and earned the title ‘The Duchess Of Waverton’ by many local people.

Joy made many a contribution to our Village and surrounding areas. Some of which included driving for the ‘Meals on Wheels’ service, performing in PTA amateur dramatic productions with her husband Walter and was even appointed school secretary in the new school in 1966 and served for 21 years until she retired in 1987. Having joined the Parish Council in 1971, she was still a member until her death (43 years in total) whilst serving as a Girl Guide leader and volunteered at the weekly WRVS baby weighing clinic. Joy was instrumental in getting the new village hall built and served on the committee aswell. Joy didn’t stop there either for In collaboration with social services and others she helped to set up and run the Day Centre (still operating today, providing company and a home cooked meal for elderly people once a week). For many years she organised the very popular coach trips to the Philharmonic Hall concerts in Liverpool and you may have seen her at one of our village fetes as she was a regular helper on counting the cash with Alistair Audsley. You will most likely remember her from the Waverton Singers, which she was a foundering member of until she retired only a few years ago. On her retirement Joy was endowed with the honour of having a life-time’s free pass to all concerts. Helping people was such a significant part of Joy’s life, a very selfless lady who used to volunteer as a receptionist at the Hospice for many years. Many will smile when they remember leaving empty jam jars on Joy’s doorstep! Every autumn people would bring fruit instead, so that she could make it into jam and jelly to donate or sell for the benefit of good causes After her retirement she became a school governor and served for 21 years from 1987 until 2008 Joy accomplished so much in her life and so many are grateful for her help, dedication and support over the years. She will be greatly missed. Joy’s family have asked us to share Joy’s life and achievements with you. A special lady. Joy’s pride of joy home, a lovely bungalow on Ringway, Waverton is now for sale, if you would like to view or make an offer please call in either our Waverton or City showroom or call 01244 330033. A Final Thought …. swanning through life! Before moving to Christleton there were only three things (it would be pushing it to call them facts!) that I knew about swans; • What starts life as an “ugly duckling” can often grow up to become a beautiful swan. This started life as a Hans Christian Andersen fable, clearly intended to be a more general metaphor for life, and how people can grow from humble beginnings. If you’re of my generation however, you’ll only really know it as a Danny Kaye song which seemed to be played on almost endless repeat on Ed “Stewpot” Stewart’s Junior Choice show, • Sorry for the metaphorical overload but my second pre-existing swan “fact” is the way it’s often used to illustrate somebody who is, seemingly, calm under pressure. The person’s unflustered persona is likened to a swan gracefully gliding across the water, while the suspicion is that inside they’re really not that calm at all, with all the activity going on inside or, in the case of the swan, all the paddling going on below the waterline, and • My final BC (before Christleton) piece of information (which I guess you could call my swan song!) is that it is illegal to eat swans in Britain, unless you happen to be the Queen. I’ve just Googled this, as I’ve long suspected it’s just some weird urban (or should that be rural) myth. While I came away none the wiser on the regal ownership and culinary habits questions, I did find a rich vein of (UKIP sponsored?) paranoia about Polish people and Albanians roasting them on barbeques! So, having spent the bulk of my life largely swan-free, I then moved to Christleton and suddenly they were everywhere; • They’re depicted on the badges for both the Primary and the High Schools, as well as being used as the title for the latter’s school magazine, • Christleton FC are nicknamed the Swans (and more imaginatively so than Swansea!), • Walking your dog along the canal can be quite hazardous at certain times of the year, as the swans look to protect their cygnets (particularly if you have a dog who thinks they just want to play!), and, •Last, but not least, the A41 magazine has rarely seen a year go by without a new swan story emerging (I seem to remember our editor chasing them through the village one year as they migrated to the canal) or another of David Cumming’s wonderful pictures of our most famous residents gracing the front cover …. …. which I’m afraid takes us to a rather sad final thought this month. It was terrible to hear, recently, that one of the Christleton Swans has been attacked and killed by a mink (which I also didn’t know we had in the area). It just wouldn’t be the same around here without the annual Christleton swan cycle of nest building on the pond followed by child rearing on the canal. So, I’m really hoping there’s a swanlike equivalent of passing on the family property (preferably without any inheritance tax – which would probably just have to go to the Queen!) and that the remaining swan will simply bequeath the family seat/nest, and the traditions we all know, to one of his/her offspring. I guess I just agree with Danny Kaye, our swans really are “the best in town”.

THOMAS PROPERTY GROUP

THE ONLY AGENT THAT ADVERTISES YOUR PROPERTY IN 3 of the TOP FIRST 6 PAGES OF THE CHRONICLE PROPERTY SECTION In last month’s edition of the A41 Magazine & Gowy Gazette we covered the importance of using an Estate Agent that advertises your property on Rightmove, the world’s leading property website. As you are already aware, The Chester Chronicle Newspaper is another main popular source for selling property. Many local people prefer to buy the paper and browse through the property pages, something buyers have done for decades. There are over 96 pages of Cheshire’s estate agencies advertising each week in The Chronicle but every week each agent is alphabetically rotated except ourselves, Thomas Property. We find this immensely helps with selling the properties we have on our books. Many buyers look through the pages when they are on a break or during breakfast and often don’t get to finish the full property supplement due to the amount of agents adverts. With ourselves Thomas Property Group being in the top first 3 pages this secures your property to be seen straight away. The Chronicle is published and available every Thursday, which is another reason we have more sales consultants present every Thursday & Friday. The amount of enquiries and viewings the advertising generates is highly significant and we have found people searching for property start from early Thursday mornings as we receive the interest and calls coming through from the early morning. We also offer features in The Chronicle and half page adverts and with our Premier service your property covers ¼ of a page. This ensures we have enough room to properly show your property at its best with more pictures, detail and features. The ¼ page advert has a strong impact and we have received great feedback from our adverts which have often resulted in viewings and a sale. We recently sold one particular property in Rowton which was one of those properties whereby we advertised an open day in a half page advert which resulted in a viewing and then purchase. The buyers informed us that they wouldn’t have known otherwise as they do not search by internet. Many agents will only advertise your property once a month in the paper due to the high costs involved, however it is one of the main advertising outlets which result in high sales figures so please make sure you are in weekly or fortnightly at the least. No other agent can or does match our marketing profile, so use it to give yourself the best chance of success. Best Wishes Rachel Thomas
