Western Rural Police Team Local Priorities for November 2014 BURGLARIES
Local weekly newsletters have identified to residents where there is an increased incidence of burglaries. Specialist and local officers are targeting these areas and appealing to residents to report any suspicious activity with as much detail as can be gathered to police as soon as possible. ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOUR Local officers are already planning for the forthcoming Bonfire night. Officers are working with local shops and schools to prevent irresponsible sales to youngsters. ROAD SAFETY Motorists have become accustomed to dry roads and long hours of daylight. Local officers are taking the speed gun out with increased regularity to those areas where motorists are ignoring deteriorating driving conditions and speed limits. There has been a lot of ‘educational’ police activity over recent months in relation to excessive speed. A greater use will be made of enforcement, where appropriate, against those motorists who continue to put other road users at risk.
Local news
Sadly, I have to start this section with the news of a fatal collision that occurred on the A534 near Broxton, where a motorcyclist was killed. The windy nature of rural roads can sometimes tempt motorists into exceeding the speed limits, which can prove disastrous particularly if the driver is unfamiliar with the roads. Please take care and pay attention to the road at all times. We have received calls of suspected stolen goods being sold over various Social Media pages. Whilst such websites can be handy for finding various bits and bobs sold by people in your area, please be wary about what you purchase. If the bargain sounds too good to be true, it probably is! Contact us if anything raises your concerns. September saw a large increase in burglaries and thefts from vehicles, notably in the Christleton area. Two gardens were entered on Haslin Crescent in the early hours of the 1st September and a bike was stolen. Various items were also stolen from 3 vehicles on Village Road and Church Walks early on in the month. A resident of Little Heath Road later reported witnessing a male climbing over fences. He is believed to have been disturbed before he committed any offences. Local officers have significantly increased their level of patrolling in the area in response to this, which appears to have halted such activity. Please continue to remain vigilant however and report any sightings of potential offenders immediately to 101, or 999 if it is an emergency. The progressively shorter daylight hours can make it easier for burglars to enter a property undetected. Consider the installation of security lighting to deter any potential offenders if you do not have it already. Several cannabis plants were found in a field on Whitchurch Road near Tattenhall early in the month. The plants were promptly collected by local officers for destruction. The local officers from Dragon Hall Police Station attended ‘Tattenhall Remembers’: an event aimed to remember those who fought in World War 1. It was a hugely successful day - the two officers thoroughly enjoyed it, especially dressing up in the costumes!

You said, we did
You said: “We are concerned about parking in the village of Tattenhall.” We did: Parking continues to be monitored continuously by local officers. Advice is often given to those observed parking in inappropriate locations, including the bus stop and methods of enforcement are used when they are deemed necessary.

Wildlife Watch - Small birds in your garden with David Cummings
N
ovember is a great time to see some of our more familiar bird species in your garden and on country walks. The partial migration of our native species in summer is well and truly over, and as food becomes scarcer in the countryside they come into gardens for additional comforts. It is possible for many fortunate families perhaps to see as many as a dozen species daily, with others coming on a more infrequent basis. I’ve recorded house sparrow, dunnock, robin, wren, blackbird, starling, magpie, chaffinch, great, blue and long tail tits this morning and friends tell me they have also seen goldcrest, greenfinch, siskin, greater spotted and green woodpeckers, jay, jackdaw, little owl and even a mute swan in the last day or so. I find it amazing that some of these species have become so friendly that they seem almost tame, and some people can identify birds that come back day after day for the titbits that we provide. Some of our species have amusing food fads, and find that whereas peanuts go stale and uneaten in our garden, they are happily
scoffed somewhere else nearby. Crushed sunflower seeds seem to be the favourite here, together with dried mealworms. Sadly our song thrush seems to have deserted us these last few months, and as a consequence the number of slugs and snails, have increased dramatically. Please remember that birds also need water to drink, and benefit from a daily bath, so it’s really helpful to provide a small dish or container or larger area of water for them. You might also then get the benefit of some really good close up views.

Beat the winter blues and grab some sunshine Summer is over, the nights are drawing in. If the prospect of getting up and coming home in the dark makes you feel gloomy, you are not alone. Seasonal Affective Disorder which causes depression is believed to strike one in five Britons in the winter months due to less daylight and the end of summer. The winter blues are caused by both the lack of sunshine and knowing the summer has gone for another year. Sufferers often feel lethargic and miserable. Exposure to sunlight boosts our levels of serotonin, the chemical that makes us feel happy, so during the winter months our bodies produce less of it, which can then lead to depression. Get out as much as possible, make sure that instead of sitting at your desk during your lunch break; take a walk in the fresh air instead. Following the sun by swapping hemispheres every six months or moving to the Tropics full time, would be even better. These options do not suit the majority of us; however, there is a middle way. Plan a winter sun holiday…. Your week or two soaking up the sun will boost your serotonin levels and just the thought of looking forward to a relaxing, warm holiday will boost your morale. Now is the time to book a winter sun holiday, but where are the hot spots this winter? Here are some of my favourite destinations. Madeira – sitting in the Atlantic, there is no time change at all travelling from the UK, so not a moment of your holiday is wasted getting over the jet lag. It’s a great destination if you prefer warm rather than really hot weather. The mild winter weather is perfect for walking and exploring. Egypt – The Red Sea has a great choice of resorts and hotels on sandy beaches lapped by warm blue waters - a fabulous winter destination for sun and water sports. Or why not consider a cruise on the Nile, a relaxing way to see the rich heritage of the Ancient Egyptians. Mauritius – with a coastline fringed by coral reefs, this island in the Indian Ocean is a great destination for divers. Snorkelling is possible straight from beachfront hotels. The Caribbean – The Caribbean – whichever island you choose, the tropical waters of the Caribbean provide the perfect haven for beach goers looking for their little slice of paradise. From beach resorts in Jamaica to the secluded coves of Antigua, each island boasts a wealth of beaches, perfect for that dream holiday. If you are looking for tropical beaches, adventure and exciting water sports, look no further than the Caribbean. South Africa – offering a rich variety of holiday styles with some of the best safaris in Africa, quaint harbour front restaurants in Cape Town, vineyards and sweeping sandy beaches, also the lagoons and walking trails of the Garden Route. Despite the long flight, the time change is only a couple of hours in our winter months to arrive in their summer. If the thought of a little winter sunshine appeals to you or if you would just like a little more info on these fantastic destinations, please get in touch. www.travelcounsellors.co.uk/tracey.tweedle 01244 459720 tracey.tweedle@travelcounsellors.com

Fading Autumn Colour, Gardening with Janet Heath
N
ovember colour comes from fruit, berries, foliage and bark and we need to look more closely at individual plants to appreciate their beauty. Fragrance is provided by one of my favourite shrubs, Viburnum bodnantense Dawn which will flower on and off until March. How many plants can you think of that will give such a long period of interest? The honeyed scent greets me every time I leave or arrive at the house. Bark comes into its own in winter with the white bark of Betula utilis jacquemontii, the greenand white striated bark of Acer grosseri which will be complimented by the copper bark of Prunus serrula. If you have room for any of these trees ensure they are planted well away from buildings to prevent root damage to property. Underplant with Cornus alba Elegantissima with red stems in winter and green and cream foliage in summer. Some grasses still look great in late autumn especially in the early morning light. Miscanthus sinensis grasses have red bronze or silvery tassels depending on variety.
autumn before the leaves fall. The red leaves contrast well with variegated ivy. Late autumn is the time to prepare your garden for winter. Tender plants such as salvias, fuschias and agapanthus need mulch around the roots with a layer of well rotted manure or compost to protect from freezing. Acers that need pruning should be pruned in winter rather than spring as they can bleed from cuts in spring. Other overgrown shrubs can be cut back after leaves have fallen so you can see the structure clearly. Prunus species are best pruned in late spring and early summer as they are less likely to get silver leaf disease. Wrap planted pots in bubble wrap to help prevent the plant roots freezing. Cut back unsightly foliage and dig out annuals then if you have the inclination, mulch all your borders with a layer of compost or manure to rot down over winter.
This year deciduous trees and shrubs have been showing autumn tints earlier due to a mild winter and plants coming into leaf early. Parthenocissus is a very vigorous climber and needs keeping under control but if you have Janet Heath, Garden Mentor a blank wall it will give a green wall in spring 01244 318258/07984 627270 and summer then colour in shades of red in janet@gardenmentor.co.uk Enjoy your Fireworks but remember your Dog

What is Osteopathy? By Gary Sharp Bsc (Hons) Ost Med.
steopathy is a primary care profession, focusing on the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disorders, and the effects of these conditions on patients’ general health. Using many of the diagnostic procedures applied in conventional medical assessment, osteopaths seek to restore the optimal functioning of the body, where possible without the use of drugs or surgery. Osteopathy is based on the principle that the body has the ability to heal, and osteopathic care focuses on strengthening the musculoskeletal systems to treat existing conditions and to prevent illness. Osteopaths’ patient-centred approach to health and well-being means they consider symptoms in the context of the patient’s full medical history, as well as their lifestyle and personal circumstances. This holistic approach ensures that all treatment is tailored to the individual patient. What do Osteopaths treat? -Osteopathy focuses on the diagnosis, management, treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal and other related disorders. Osteopaths treat the person rather than specific conditions - for example, an injury to your knee might also affect the foot, hip and spine. Osteopathy can help relieve the symptoms of a range of conditions, including: back and neck pain, postural problems, sporting injuries, muscle and joint deterioration (arthritic pain), headaches (arising from the neck), shoulder and elbow pain, knee and hip pain, sciatica, muscle spasms and tensions, restricted mobility and occupational ill-health. What can I expect on my first visit to an osteopath? -At the first consultation, the osteopath will compile a full case history of your symptoms, as well as asking for information about your lifestyle and diet. The osteopath may also observe you making some simple movements and run some diagnostic tests to help them make a diagnosis. Osteopaths are trained to examine areas of the body using a highly-developed sense of touch, known as palpation, to determine conditions and identify the body’s points of weakness or excessive strain. Osteopathy is a ‘package’ of care that includes skilled mobilisation and manipulative techniques, reinforced by guidance on lifestyle and exercise.

Hooray for Hollywood
A
ctors from several local communities including Tattenhall, Waverton, Guilden Sutton, Mickle Trafford, Barrow and Chester will be turning disaster into triumph in November.
Guilden Sutton Players were busy rehearsing Shakespeare’s ‘The Merry Wives of Windsor’ when director Gail Young fell and ended up requiring an emergency hip replacement operation. With plans in tatters, the Players managed to find a replacement play as well as a replacement director in Anna Morris and co-director, Rob Jones. The result is ‘Shakespeare in Hollywood’, a genuinely funny play, set in 1930’s America, where the making of a film version of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ is interrupted by the unexpected appearance of the real Oberon and Puck of Shakespeare’s play. The real Oberon and Puck are ushered onto the silver screen to play who else but themselves. Mayhem ensues, with a magical flower causing loopy love triangles between movie moguls, blonde bombshells and arrogant asses! The Wall Street Journal said that the play “will charm your socks off” and NBC called it “fast, funny” and “entertaining”. The play runs from November 19th – 22nd at Guilden Sutton Village Hall. Tickets cost £10 (concessions £8) and are available online at: www.guildensuttonplayers.ticketsource.co.uk or by phoning 0333 666 3366.

Rainbows invited to celebrate Girl Power
I
t is not every day that 5 – 7 year olds get to be surgeons, radiographers, nurses, midwives and scientists for the day but that is exactly what 1st Tattenhall Rainbows got to do when they were selected to attend a celebration, going behind the scenes at Liverpool Women’s hospital. From the entire North West region, 3 Rainbow units were selected to attend this very special event with Tattenhall Rainbows being lucky enough to be invited along. The event was held to celebrate United Nations ‘International Day of the girl’ which aimed to promote the message that, in the 21st century, girls could do anything including a huge range of careers as well as have children and raise a family. Exclusive access was given to the Rainbows who took part in such a huge range of activities such as visiting the research lab to be scientists, where they looked though telescopes, carried out experiments and studied how germs were spread. They also got to be nurses and take blood pressure, temperatures and bandage ‘patients’ as well as dressing up as surgeons to carry out an ‘operation’. A visit to the neonatal ward was also on the day’s timetable where the rainbows saw a 3lb baby and learnt all about the incubators and special equipment that help keep babies healthy. However the highlight for many was a visit to Ultrasound where they saw a radiographer carry out a scan on an expectant mummy and actually saw a 28 week old baby wriggling inside her tummy! For the first time ever, the Rainbows were speechless! The day proved extremely inspiring for all with many Rainbows later telling their parents that they wanted to be doctors, nurses, surgeons or midwives when they grew up. There were also a few budding scientists returning to Tattenhall that day, declaring that ‘Scientists are so cool’. The message that ‘girls can do anything’ is definitely being heard loud and clear in Tattenhall!

The Float Garden by David Magner with split level deck and raised bed adds interest to the garden by adding a variety of shapes and heights.
! ! " " # #
Autumn is well and truly here and those mellow, golden days of late September and October, that fool us into thinking the end of the summer isn’t quite as bad as feared, are dwindling. Being such a summer lover can make me a bit gloomy, as the nights draw in and the clocks go back. We’ve been here before of course, I know I’m not alone in turning to “activities as the antidote to the onset of winter blues. It follows quite naturally that as foliage dies down and leaves fall, having a bit of an autumn tidy up strikes you as the sensible thing to do, especially when you realise the temperature is about 10 degrees lower than you’ve been used to and it is more conducive to bursts of activities like scrubbing, jetwashing, raking up leaves etc., than relaxing on the lounger, with your Kindle.

Thanks to David Padgham for this lovely project with raised beds, you can see more on the customer projects pages on the website
Hopefully there is room amongst this cleaning frenzy to actually do a bit of constructive stuff. Take stock, as the garden’s shape and size is revealed, by clearing up the clutter and pruning the old growth. How about getting a project underway like creating some raised beds? These are becoming increasingly popular, with media exposure extolling the virtues of raising the level of your gardening, as seen in many gardening DIY and makeover programmes. It certainly helps to make weeding and harvesting that much easier if you raise the height of the plants you are growing, especially if you have back problems other physical conditions that limit bending.
However there’s a lot more to them than convenience. Raised beds are being used as an integral part of garden design schemes, where they contain veg or flowers and shrubs creating separate growing areas. As shown in the photo at the top of the page, one of our raised bed kits has been incorporated, in the split-level decking next to the Zone shelter. The designer planned this, not just for aesthetic reasons, but to cater for the ericaceous (lime hating) plants he wanted to use in this part of the garden, like the beautiful red Maple (Acer), with the ferns. So raised beds can give you the chance to keep soil types separate. They can also add interesting shape and structure. The other photo bottom left is an impressive example, sent to me by David Padgham for the customer projects section on the website. Rather than using our raised beds kits he has used ungrooved Jakwall timbers in a very clever way, making beds for water features, some are Alpine beds and a nifty bench seat is included too.
$ % !
; 7 ) & ! <4 54 4= ! > Here’s a test for you, look at the picture, then imagine it without the raised beds. It would just be a flower bed, some paving and the fence - pretty boring really! I think I know which I prefer. To find out more go to your local page www.jacksons-fencing.co.uk/chesterlocal or call 0800 408 4754 to talk to your local Jacksons Fencing Centre.

Night Sky in November 2014 Early risers might catch a glimpse of Mercury low down in the ESE, altitude about 10 degrees 40 minutes before dawn from November 1 to 6. After that Mercury is still quite bright but starts to travel back towards the Sun and will not be visible at month’s end. Venus remains too close to the Sun to be visible this month. Mars is fading but still resembles a bright red star low down in the SW. It sets about two and a half hours after sunset. Jupiter rises around midnight and is visible until dawn. It is in the constellation of Leo and the last quarter moon and will be close by in the early morning sky on 14th and 5th November. Saturn will not be visible this month as it is in line with the Sun. Look out this month for the Great Square of Pegasus (in mythology, the Flying Horse). This constellation dominates the high southern part of the sky during these autumn months. The ‘W’ of Cassiopeia lies almost overhead and an imaginary line passing through the 3rd and 4th stars makes a useful pointer. Now find the upper left star in the Square and move 2 stars along to the left. You should see a short line of two stars above the leftmost star. And there very near that star is the Great Andromeda Galaxy also known as M31. This is the furthest object that can be seen easily with the naked eye (the fainter M33 galaxy is even further away but difficult to see), at around two and a half million light years, or about 15 million million million miles give or take a few miles! The Leonid meteor shower occurs this month from 15 to 20 November. The maximum is on the 18th, and the sky will be free of interfering light from the moon. Every 33 years this shower produces a spectacular number of meteors (thousands!) but this year is not one of them. Nevertheless it is worthwhile looking for these meteors which appear to radiate from the constellation of Leo. Geoff Chamberlain

Lasting Powers of Attorney: The Power of Positive Planning Lynette Viney-Passig is a Solicitor & Director with Swayne Johnson Solicitors. She is experienced in dealing with matters for Private Clients including, Wills, Powers of Attorney, Estate Administration, Care Home Fees, and Court of Protection Matters. The approach of Christmas usually brings with it hectic times; visiting family and friends, shopping, and preparations at home for the festive period. One generally finds time, amongst an otherwise busy schedule, to fit in all of the planning and preparation that Christmas brings. However, when it comes to planning positively for the future (such as the preparation or review of one’s Will or the preparation of Lasting Powers of Attorney), it is often the case that such activities are ‘put off’ for another day. Lasting Powers of Attorney replaced Enduring Powers of Attorney when they came into force in October 2007. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney, one for property and financial affairs and one for health and welfare. You can prepare both types of Lasting Power of Attorney or just one.
and the chosen attorneys are still capable and/or willing to act for you. It is important to note that Enduring Powers of Attorney only cover decisions regarding property and financial affairs. Enduring Powers of Attorney do not cover decisions regarding your health and welfare. The Lasting Power of Attorney for property and financial affairs can be useful, for example, if you need help buying and/or selling property, managing your savings and/or investments, dealing with tax affairs and claiming benefits. The Lasting Power of Attorney for health and welfare authorises your attorney to make decisions about, for example, your diet, dress, daily routine and the medical treatment that you receive.
In keeping with the festive spirit, our Tattenhall office will be offering a discount of 20% from our legal fees for individuals wishing to prepare Lasting Powers of Attorney throughout December 2014. Simply telephone our Tattenhall office on 01829 700333 to arrange an appointment with Mrs Lynette Viney-Passig. Please note that the initial appointment must take place before or during December 2014.
If you prepared an Enduring Power of Attorney before October 2007 it will still be valid but it is important that the document is reviewed to ensure that it continues to accurately reflect your wishes 35

t’s that time of year when we need to start looking after our skin and protecting it from the cold. Particuliar areas to pay attention to include our lips, elbows and feet. Your skin is your biggest detox organ and looking after it does much more than simply make you look gorgeous. Did you know that what you put on to your skin goes directly into your bloodstream within as little as 26 seconds? Just think of how the nicotine patch works! Think about it - what are you putting on your skin? Is it natural? Have you actually read the ingredients? Is it full of long chemical sounding names that you don’t understand ? Did you know that a beauty product or even a shampoo or soap can call itself natural with just 3% natural ingredients? For too long we have been trusting the advertising of big beauty companies and jeopardising our health and more and more we are starting to see people with sensitive skin and skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, rosacea and acne. Its time to start loving your skin and treating it to 100% natural beauty care. As well as looking after yourself, why not treat a loved one to some natural gorgeous smelling skincare that they won’t find in the shops? WHAT YOU THINK OF THOMAS PROPERTY GROUP We have dealt with Thomas Property Group over several years both for letting and buying/selling and found their service to be of a very high standard. All the staff are friendly and efficient, especially Michael, Rachel and Paul and they always keep you up to date with any new developments. We would never have any hesitation whatsoever in recommending Thomas’ Property Group. THEIR FEES ARE ALSO EXCELLENT COMPARED TO MOST ESTATE AGENTS. Mrs. Whiteside. I had three estate agents value my home. I decided on Thomas as they were the most enthusiastic about the sale of my home. Customer service throughout was exceptional and they went above and beyond to deliver fantastic communication to both myself and the buyer. Selling your home can at times be very stressful however Thomas really did help to relieve any additional stress and were always available, friendly and nothing was ever too much trouble. A huge Thankyou to everyone at Thomas I will definitely be recommending you! Mrs. Cleave What a fantastic company! As first time buyers, we needed our hands held right the way through the process and Thomas Property didn’t disappoint. Michael, our contact was so patient and took our calls no matter what he was doing (Even if it was just a quick bit of jargon busting) When our solicitors weren’t doing their jobs properly, he helped us compose emails with the wording to get them moving. Overall, I cannot recommend them enough. Thanks Guys! Mr. Wood

Christleton Village Fete 2014 The rain tried very hard to dampen our carnival spirit but an amazing day was had by all at our ‘Brazilian’ Village Fete, we even saw some sunshine!! The procession was led by The Wirral Pipe Band and the fete was officially declared open by the lovely Margaret Croston BEM and her husband Alf who went on to choose the fancy dress winners. David Cummings compered throughout the day introducing Terry Large and his brilliant birds, singer ‘Natasha Peto’ and the fabulous ‘Kings of Wervin’. A record number of stalls meant that we were borrowing gazebos left right and centre but it all made for a huge choice of things to do and buy including Bottle Lamps from Lumen8, Balloons, Glitter Tattoos, Handmade Bags, Swanbola, Popcorn, Burgers and Beer!! The fetes crowning glory was the 5 brand new games, designed, made and very generously donated to the fete by the lovely Paula and Sean Hemens of Bedtime Bedz. This donation has helped the Fete tremendously to ensure its survival, without local support, sponsorship and a good voluntary committee, the fete would not happen each year. As some of you will have noticed our well used gazebos are looking a little worse for wear so we are very pleased to announce that Councillors Parker and Parker have kindly donated £2000 for us to put towards the cost of buying some new double gazebos!!!!!! Finally, this year we will be donating £2586.16, to 17 different causes. Please take a look at our website for a full list of donations. www.christletonfete.org.uk Thanks again for all your continued support, The Fete Committee

Polly - The Blogging Boxer ..... Bowls
W
ell, not much has been happening in my world. It’ been nice enough to sit outside under my favourite tree as well as on one very cold day, being able to stretch out in front of the fire. For once Sam didn’t try to muscle his way in. I did wonder if he was ok, perhaps not feeling quite right, but when his supper dish was put down, any such concerns I might have had, vanished, along with his food. Talking of dishes - these are very important things to us dogs you know, we’ve been bought brand new ones. Big they are and heavy and deep. Him-indoors doesn’t put any more food in them though, they just stop me and Sam from making a mess on the floor, you know those little bits that splash no matter how slowly you eat. And because they’re so heavy they don’t slide over the tiles like our old ones did. You could get a lot of exercise chasing your dish around! Well, next month I should be able to tell you about Sam and his Ice Bucket Challenge - hehehe! Love Polly, xxx Picture ‘Me pondering my next blog’
