Monthly Newsletter Western Rural Police Team Email western.rural.npu@cheshire.pnn.police.uk Twitter @WesternRuralNPU www.cheshire.police.uk Keep informed about what is happening in your local area by signing up to Cheshire Police Alert on www.cheshirepolicealert.co.uk. Message from Inspector Keith Curbishley “The school holidays are now over and the holiday tans will probably be fading already! I do hope that you took on board some of the security advice that I have been encouraging and that you returned from your holidays to find your homes secure and intact. Please remember to check your credit card and bank card statements carefully – retailers in some parts of the world may be prepared to take advantage of foreign visitors. Please also check your email and post to make sure that there are no unauthorised purchases or credit applications by anyone trying to use your identity while you have been away. Over the summer, local officers have assisted in the development of several community schemes for young people, such as the sports and crafts event at Tattenhall. Events such as this are created not only to divert young people away from becoming involved in antisocial behaviour, but to also give local officers the opportunity to engage and interact with them to develop positive relationships. If you are aware of any other initiatives in your area which you believe may benefit from the attendance of a local officer, please contact your local police station. It is a sad fact that fatalities on our roads are too regular an occurrence. Local officers are out as much as possible, carrying out proactive road safety work. This work is about trying to reduce the heartache caused to friends and family of these victims as well as reducing the financial and time disruption to other road users that such incidents create. Please focus on your own driving characteristics when you see officers carrying out such work. Officers are not there to persecute innocent motorists!” Local priorities Burglaries; Despite the fact that police have arrested offenders following a couple of spates of burglaries in the area, there are still other burglars out there! Whilst officers are working hard to identify and detain them, we are very reliant on you, members of the public taking effective security measures and also reporting any suspicious activity as soon as possible and obtaining as much information about the suspicious people as possible. Road Safety; Local PCSO’s and officers are tasked with identifying and targeting those areas subject to most speeding and incidents of dangerous driving. Please contact your local officer and let them know of any concerns. ASB; The school holidays are now over and the kids have returned to school. There have been relatively few reported incidents of antisocial behaviour over the holiday period. Please continue to notify your local officer of any emerging problems, so that they can be tackled before they escalate. Local news for your area 1. A burglary has occurred in a property on Rowton lane, Rowton. It is believed that a purse was stolen. 2. There has been a significant increase in the number of reported burglaries from properties and thefts from motor vehicles in Christleton over recent weeks. Police officers have increased their high-visibility patrolling as response to this. Please take a degree of responsibility for your personal security by remaining vigilant and reporting any suspicious behaviour to 101, or 999 if it is an emergency. 3. A suspicious male was reported on Brown Heath Lane, Waverton after he was spotted ‘prowling’ up and down residents’ driveways. When local patrols arrived there was no trace of the male. It is believed that he was spooked when a security light was activated. 4. In the early hours of 27th August, a property on Mount Way, Waverton was broken into. A vehicle and a purse were stolen in the process. PC 4441 Aled Pugh & PCSO 20398 Jon Hurst Dragon Hall Police Station 01606 362694

Autumn Fungi with David Cummings
L
ate September and October is a really good time for family walks in the woodlands we have in this area. Apart from the colour of the trees, and the sightings of animals, birds and insects, we have a variety of fungi to enjoy. Some grow in very obvious places eg bracket fungi on tree trunks, others on open ground or slightly hidden in undergrowth, such as the inkcaps, puffballs, parasols, honey fungus or the highly coloured, attractive but very poisonous fly agaric. Delamere Forest, Frodsham, Helsby, Peckforton or Bickerton Hills are all good sites to see a huge variety of the fruiting bodies of these species, which can best be identified using field guides. The world of fungi is astonishing in its variety, some can be eaten safely, but many varieties are poisonous, so my advice would be if you are not sure, DON’T. Unlike plants fungi do not contain chlorophyll, so cannot live by photosynthesis. Instead they live by breaking down organic matter in the environment, and reintroduce life giving nutrients into the ecosystem. Most fungi that we might find on a walk will be growing in soil on rotting wood or on a tree trunk. The many bracket species are probably the easiest to spot and examine. My favourite is the bright yellow “chicken in the wood” variety. The most spectacular and memorable fungi for children, the fly agaric /amanita variety that usually illustrate fairy stories, should be seen and not touched! They are the
poisonous variety. Although the red fly agaric is the most common, the golden yellow variety can also be seen in this area. All these start off as small domes but flatten out as they grow, sometimes growing to as much as 15cm in diameter. Another of my favourites is the sooty or shaggy inkcap, which grows from a small acorn shape to a 10cm flaky white cylindrical body, which then opens out revealing a sooty/inky black substance underneath. Edible field mushrooms are far less common these days, but do suddenly appear for no apparent reason on fields, verges and even graveyards. Night Sky in October 2014 Venus is now lost in the dawn twilight sky before sunrise and is unlikely to be visible this month. Mars is still an evening star setting about two and a half hours after the sun, low in the south-west. Jupiter rises around midnight by month end and moves from Cancer to Leo on October 14th. The moon will be close by on the nights of 17th and 18th October. Saturn is getting more difficult to spot low in the twilight evening sky, but the waxing crescent moon will be very close to Saturn on October 25th. Conditions are looking good for the Orionid meteor shower. The moon will be out of the way making for dark skies. As the name suggests, these meteors appear to radiate from the constellation of Orion. During its peak on 20th-24th October around 20 meteors per hour have been recorded. They are associated with debris left behind from Halley’s comet. Summer time ends on October 26th when the clocks go back 1 hour. Geoff Chamberlain

Mid Autumn Treats - October gardening colour is at a premium in mid autumn this Fofferlowering year after the mild winter but there are many that colour. I have grown Clematis Bill Mackenzie for its wonderful lemon yellow flowers in summer and autumn. They are followed by fluffy seed heads. Once established this climber will cover a large area with its vigorous growth. Cut back to 30cm or 1ft in late winter and it will send up many new stems to flower that year. It will grow on most soils provided the roots are shaded and kept moist.
Another colourful climber is the Boston Creeper or Parthenocissus tricuspidata. It has a 3 lobed leaf that produces glorious red /purple colour in autumn. The photo shows it against the green and cream of ivy leaves. It is vigorous and will colour best in a partially shaded wall in well drained soil. Just make sure it does not cover the house! Nerines are bulbs that flower in autumn with the flowers appearing before the leaf. The photo shows the complex brilliant pink flower in all its glory. So if you have a very sunny spot and well drained soil in a sheltered position, you can grow some of these exquisite flowers. Make sure they are not sheltered by larger plants. An often overlooked shrub is the Winged Spindle or Euonymus alatus. This small shrub has tiny cream flowers in spring which in autumn turn into fingernail sized pink berries. The leaf colour in autumn turns red and would contrast well with a variegated holly. Winter pots should be planted up to give you a lift in the darker months. I plant primulas, cyclamen hederifolium, winter pansies and small daffodils or tulips in pots. Also try a variegated hebe, a spring flowering heather or a pieris with pansies and primulas. Use John Innes No 3 potting compost mixed with grit to improve drainage and enable plants to survive freezing temperatures. In the garden cut back dead stems that look tatty and remove leaves from low plants that could get smothered. Protect your brassicas from those pigeons that like to eat them by covering with netting. Pick your last beans, tomatoes, pumpkins and squashes and remove the old plants. Janet Heath, Garden Mentor : 01244 318258/07984 627270 janet@gardenmentor.co.uk 18

Extend or move?
MANy people love where they live - the house, the neighbours and the location - but when things become a bit cramped they often face a difficult decision: “Do we extend or do we move?” As estate agents we are always being asked for our opinion and predicted end value of a house if extended. Here are a few hints, tips and some questions to get you thinking about whether extending your home is right for you.
creating space for a second staircase? Is there enough head height or will you need to include dormers and a new roof? Will the joists need strengthening to take appropriate loading of a floor rather than a ceiling? Do you need planning permission? All of these things cost money but you won’t necessarily see a great benefit from the expense incurred.
How much will the house be worth if we extend? Generally speaking if your property is already in good condition and you decide to extend into the loft or at the back of the house you should plan to stay for the medium to long term. A good quality extension will usually cost anywhere from £30,000 upwards, but you are not guaranteed that this amount will be transferred straight to the end value of your home.
Extending to the rear or side to create a large kitchen and social space is always popular but consider how much garden area will be used. Family houses with small gardens can sometimes struggle when it comes to resale. Also think about a two storey extension rather than just single. The cost does not double but the space can. Have a look where your drains are. How close to the boundary can you build? Will you need a party wall agreement? Will a neighbour have a right to light issue? Can you build under permitted development or do you need permission? Whatever you decide to do, make sure you get the relevant building regulations approval and we always advise consulting an architect before you approach a builder. If you are facing a decision about whether to extend or move, do contact Somerville’s Estate Agents to discuss things through. We will be able to provide you specific advice about your property and an estimate of the current and post-building work value.
LOFT CONVERSION If you want to extend into the loft we generally advise that you try and incorporate an ensuite as well as another bedroom. This will be more expensive but will certainly help with end value. Think about access into the new loft room. Will you lose a bedroom

FORD TOURNEO CONNECT
Driving with David Parry-Jones A passenger car or van with windows? This is Ford’s popular and practical Tourneo Connect that can be yours for £15,895. MODEL: Ford Tourneo Connect Zetec ENGINE: 998cc petrol EcoBoost PRICE: £15,895 POWER: 99bhp
TORQUE: 170Nm EMISSIONS: 129g/km 0-62: In 14.0 seconds FUEL: 50.4 mpg average
MORE THAN a decade ago, the thought of the motoring public buying ‘vans with windows’ would have been laughed out of court, now thousands of us admit following the French who introduced them like Ford with its late entry of its one-litre Tourneo Connect Zetec. ODD GETS EVEN ~ Suddenly odd looking vehicles like Kia’s Soul and Nissan’s Juke changed the scene by catching the public imagination, while Citroen’s Berlingo, Fiat’s Doblo and Renault’s Kangoo saw sales rocket as we all decided we really do like rough and ready van-like vehicles, for their ruggedness and interior space. TON TOPPER FIVE-DOOR ~ So enter stage left Ford’s Tourneo Connect Zetec It only costs £15,895, seats five with five doors, squeezes 50 miles out of every gallon, has emissions of only 129g/km and will top the ton. EYE OF THE BEHOLDER ~ It’s only pretty in the eye of the beholder, but it sure is functional as you can fold down the rear seats to revert to a van-like vehicle with van-like space. It’s a pleasant drive, giving good roadholding and suspension, if not a bit mundane inside. MUNDANE BUT PRACTICAL ~ But that’s the very reason I suspect drivers are buying these by their thousand, fed-up of the continuous upgrading of the family car. These new breed of mundane but practical vehicles are seen as platforms to take us from A to B and not mimics of the Ritz Hotel foyer. ENGINE TO DRIVE FOR ~ The Tourneo Connect is powered by Ford’s amazing 998cc EcoBoost petrol engine providing bhp of power at. rpm and Nm of torque from. rpm. And that will see the Tourneo reach a103mph top speed and return a 55mpg urban cycle figure. LOTS ARE INCLUDED ~ It comes with 16-inch sturdy steel wheels with full wheel covers, a tyre inflator kit, surprisingly a DAB radio and CD, AirCon, driver’s eight-way adjustable seat! powered one-shot windows, privacy glass, powered and heated mirrors, and daytime running lights. YOU GET TABLE TRAYS ~ You also get foglamps, heated windscreen and washer jets, a front overhead shelf which is particularly useful, 12-volt power point supply front and rear, handy seat-back table trays, adjustable steering column, body coloured front bumpers, steering wheel audio controls and most useful for supermarket parking dual sliding rear doors. WATCH THE EXTRAS ~ The £15,895 test car ended up costing £17,275 as it had £360 of metallic paint extra, along with alloy wheels at £480 more, parking aid at £240, and a tow attachment which could tow 900kgs of braked trailer, at £300 more. SLICK SIX SPEED BOX ~ The test car was a six-speed manual with a nice slick gearbox and ESC and ABS plus an immobiliser, all included as standard. There was also remote central and double locking at this price as well as Ford’s easy-fuel cap less refuelling. JUST UNDER A LITRE ~ Driving the car you were totally unaware that the 998cc engine was under the bonnet, that’s the volume of a two-pint milk carton powering you as you go. This petrol EcoBoost unit was the talk of the motoring press when first launched two years ago and is still surprising drivers today! ANY BAD POINTS ~ Only a slight niggle with the price, but otherwise you get a fun and practical vehicle. So the choice is yours, a pretty Astra, funster Juke or Kia cee’d or this more utility looking workhorse. 34

MARBELLA…..The Celebrity Hotspot Situated along the Costa del Sol, Marbella is Spain's answer to St Tropez. This chic holiday resort is a favoured get-away among the rich and famous and it’s not hard to see why. There is an endless supply of world-class restaurants, luxury hotels, spectacular golf courses, fashionable shops, a lovely marina and a vast number of lively bars and clubs to keep you entertained. Marbella may be the most famous place on the Costa del Sol but there are many other areas that are well worth a visit! You can visit the ‘white village’ Mijas and wander the cobbled streets, dine in the mountains at Benhavis or go down to Gibraltar to see the rock and the monkeys that reside there, from my experience it’s definitely worth a visit to see the monkeys roaming around freely.. it’s quite a sight! With the coastal motorway traveling right across the Coast it is extremely easy to navigate your way around. Marbella may have hit the headlines recently and got its ‘Marbs’ nickname from the cast of The Only Way Is Essex but it has in fact been enticing stars and celebrities for many years. Big Hollywood stars like Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant and Grace Kelly were recurring guests to the infamous Marbella Club Hotel back in the day and our very own Princess Diana often frequented a luxurious villa owned by the Goldsmith family. Sean Connery also famously owned a house in San Pedro for over 20 years where he and his wife entertained well known stars including Richard Burton, Michael Caine, George Best and Omar Sharif. Known for its glamour and over the top extravagance, Marbella attracts many stars and you can often walk past a famous face as you stroll through the town. Today’s famous A-listers who frequent Marbella include musicians Sting and Rod Stewart. Many entrepreneurs are often seen in and around the town, including Roman Abramovich who moors his large yacht in Puerto Banus. Alan Sugar and Karen Brady have both been seen at the legendary Marbella restaurant Villa Tiberio. I have also visited here and can definitely recommend it; you can feel like a celebrity even if it is for just one evening! Two years ago, first lady Michelle Obama made a visit to Marbella and stayed at the exclusive and luxurious Hotel Villa Padierna. Whilst visiting, the President’s wife was accompanied by her daughter and 68 secret service agents and her entourage occupied 60 of the 129 rooms at the hotel. If partying the night away is what you’re looking for in Marbella, party venues include Sala Beach and the Sisu Boutique Hotel, Ocean Club and Nikki Beach. As mentioned earlier, the cast of The Only Way is Essex, have also descended en mass in the last few years taking over many party venues. The weather in Marbella is renowned for its fantastic micro climate and in general the Costa del Sol gets 320 days of sunshine a year!! The close proximity to the African Coastline sees summer temperatures soar and in the winter months whilst the rest of Europe are battling off the likes of wind, rain and snow it is often a very different story in Marbella. If the thought of a little winter sunshine appeals to you or if you would just like a little more info on this fantastic destination, please get in touch. www.travelcounsellors.co.uk/tracey.tweedle tracey.tweedle@travelcounsellors.com If I can help with any holiday or travel plans either at home or abroad, please contact me and I will be more than happy to help.

Sunday, October 12th sees the opening concert of the Tattenhall Music Society for the 2014/2015 Season. We start with the most exciting British pianist on the concert scene at the moment … the internationally renowned Steven Osborne. This will be Steven’s 3rd visit to Tattenhall and anybody who has experienced listening to him performing will be aware of what an electric and outstandingly accomplished pianist he is. He has just completed a tour in Australia and is fitting us in after performing at the Birmingham Symphony Hall and then he is off to Brussels for a concert the following day. We are so lucky to be able to welcome him back and he enjoys playing for us too. The concert will be in St. Alban’s Church, Tattenhall at 6.30pm. Admission for nonmembers is £8 and members £6. The intimacy of the Church is a wonderful experience and is in sharp contrast to the enormity of a City Concert Hall. Any young pianists should take the opportunity to hear Steven in Tattenhall and I can guarantee they will be inspired. Tickets will be on sale from Tattenhall News and the Post Office or you can pay on the door. If you require any more information telephone Anne McGrath …. 01829 770932

thomas talk THE DAY EVERYONE CAME TO THOMAS PROPERTY GROUP! It started off as a warm September morning. The birds were singing, the schools had started and we were working hard negotiating sales and agreeing lets. When all of a sudden, we found our Waverton Rural Office surrounded! “WE’VE DONE IT”, we shouted. “EVERYONE HAS REALISED WE ARE REALLY ARE THE BEST AGENT TO USE”. Excited and very pleased we prepared ourselves ready for the hundreds of people who had decided to visit us that late summer’s morning. However we could only fantasise for so long before we made our way outside and joined everyone to watch the incredible Tour Of Britain! The UK’s biggest professional cycle race going past our showroom door in Waverton. A great experience which we were very lucky to share with our community. But guess what - we had many more enquiries as a result. What a result. Until Next Month, Rachel Thomas

A Final Thought … Literature, but not as you’d know it
I
t could be one of the best pub quiz questions ever! What do Geoffrey Boycott, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Sheila Hancock, Paddy Ashdown and Johnny Rotten have in common? An extraordinary line-up for Celebrity Big Brother maybe, or a pretty controversial new intake for the House of Lords!
Actually they’re all dropping in to town later this month, to take part in the Chester Literature Festival, which runs from the 10th – 26th October. This list does though show how the term “literature” has changed over the years. While these individuals are undoubtedly all eminent in their chosen fields, it’s probably not an unfair criticism to say none of them are likely to be running Dickens close in the literary stakes. The publishing industry is however clearly gearing itself up early for the crucial Christmas market (and yes I am typing this in September!), and when it comes to people buying books as presents the celebrity (auto)biography is king. So what wares will our quintet of famous names (selected from a wider list of 44 events) be “plugging” at this year’s festival; • Geoffrey Boycott will be talking about “The Corridor of Certainty”, which concentrates on his personal life, beyond his cricket career, and in particular his battle against cancer, • Sir Ranulph will be moving beyond adventuring, with “Agincourt”, a new perspective on the famous Battle, in which three of his ancestors fought (one of them for the French!), • Sheila Hancock will be publicising her first novel, “Miss Carter’s War”, a portrait of post-war Britain told through the eyes of an English teacher who was one of the first women to win a Cambridge degree, • Paddy Ashdown weighs in with “The Cruel Victory”, an account of the little known story of the single largest action by the French Resistance during WW2, which was apparently both heroic and doomed from the start, and finally, • John Lydon, to give him his proper post Sex Pistols moniker, will be talking about (or quite possibly ranting about) his new autobiography, “Anger is an Energy”, in which he promises an uncensored version of his life, and when Johnny Rotten promises “uncensored” you can bet you’re in for an interesting ride. So, my rather sniffy comments up front about “Christmas present biographies” are, in retrospect, probably pretty unfair. It turns out that only two of our authors are actually writing about themselves, and each of these books sounds like an interesting read, and certainly not out of place in a Literature Festival. A final thought … in order to explore my theme of populism a bit further though (and somehow rescue my previous snobbishness!) I did take a look at how these five books are performing in the current Amazon bestsellers list. In reverse order, it’s Sheila Hancock (98,902), Ranulph Fiennes (66,607), Paddy Ashdown (22,805), and then the two autobiographies topping the list, with John Lydon (5,572) being outscored by Geoffrey Boycott with a very respectable 171 (another century, probably slowly compiled!) However, it’s Johnny Rotten that we’ll be going to see. Who’s really worried about literary prowess when there’s the promise of more bad language than the Town Hall will have seen in many a year?!
