Was noch kein Geometrielehrer geschafft hat, liefert der Gebrauchsgrafiker serienweise: die Quadratur des Kreises. Die hier gezeigten Entwürfe haben nicht nur runde Platten quadratisch zu verhüllen, sie sind auch selber, ihrem Format zum Trotz, eine runde Sache.

Nichts wäre einfacher gewesen, als den Sound berühmter Jazzbands mit den wohlerworbenen Kunstmitteln von heute so aktiv-abstrakt, informell und fluktuierend wie möglich darzustellen, also: Schlagbesen = Pollock, gestopfte Trompete = Bissier, Tenorsaxophon = Poliakoff, Bass = Soulages, und Ragtime = Vedova. Darüber hätten vielleicht die documenta-Leute glänzende Augen bekommen, aber die Philips-Leute lange Nasen, denn: die Platten sollen ja nicht nur gelobt, sondern auch gekauft werden. Es galt, das differenzierte Jazz-Feeling der modernen Kunst zwar an-, aber nicht auszuspielen – es also in einen tonangebenden Realismus zu übertragen. Eine ins Unkontrollierbare schweifende Freiheit (die übrigens gern von Subventionen zehrt) wird hier in Konsumform gebracht und fast bis zum Signet gebändigt. Im Gegensatz zu dem vielen Gerahmten und Ungereimten einer Kunstausstellung tragen diese Quadratbilder eine Prüfungsinstanz in sich: die Musik. Jeder Plattenkramer ist zu Hause ein kleiner Galeriedirektor, der Cool und Hot auf den ersten Blick etwa wie Kubismus und Aktion-Painting unterscheidet und genau weiss, wie ein Country-Blues aussieht, ein Jauleffekt mit Silbenhack oder irgendein heilbringerisches Edelgeplärre. Von Max Bills Integration von 4 Systemen bis zur faschingsmässig herausgeputzten Sphinx von Heinz Edelmann ist den Grafikern jeder klare Strich recht, um das optische Repertoire dem Plattenschrank anzupassen.

Die Zeitschrift twen (als Programmgestalter) zielt dabei nicht, wie der Titel irrtümlich vermuten lässt, auf die Zwanzigjährigen, sondern – ähnlich dem Text- und Bildarrangement ihrer Hefte – auf einen Impuls quer durch die Generationen. Die Serie ist so bedachtsam angelegt, dass ein paar Gegenproben (welche Platte zu welcher Hülle?) zum vergnüglichen Rückratespiel werden. Kinderleicht: von den sieben Klarinetten auf Benny Goodman oder vom Mississippidampfer auf New Orleans und auf den High-Society-Chorus zu schliessen; für Fortgeschrittene: an Hals und Schnecke eines Streichinstruments jenes Cello zu erkennen, das Oscar Pettiford vor 14 Jahren für den Cool-Jazz entdeckt hat; und nur für Snobs schliesslich: unterschiedlich rot getönte Eiswürfel zum Klavier von Thelonious Monk, des Bebop-Hohepriesters mit dem asymmetrischen Humor. Angesichts einer solchen Musterserie der Gebrauchsgrafik könnten die attraktiv verhüllten Musiker sogar noch Shakespeare mit einem Dirty Tone verfremden und frech behaupten: bei Philips sehen wir uns wieder.

Squaring the circle is a feat which has always eluded the geometricians, but graphic designers do it every day: the square sleeves shown here do not only have to protect round discs, they are also—in spite of their shape—a well-rounded achievement. Nothing would have been simpler than to portray the sound of famous jazz bands with the welltested artistic media of today in as active, abstract, informal and fluctuating a manner as possible. Something like this: a whisk = Pollock, a muted trumpet = Bissier, a tenor saxophone = Poliakoff, a bass = Soulages and ragtime Vedova. This sort of thing would have enthused the editors of documenta but bitterly disappointed the Philips people.

For the records are after all not only to be praised but also to be sold.

The highly differentiated relations between jazz and modern art had to be alluded to without being too elusive, in other words, realism was the score. An otherwise uncontrolled artistic freedom (mainly kept alive by subsidies) is here tamed for everyday consumption and almost reduced to a signet. In contrast to the framed product displayed in an art exhibition, these quadrangular pictures bear the test of their quality within themselves: the music. Every discjockey is a sort of little gallery director at home, and at first glance distinguishes cool and hot as easily as if the one were Cubism and the other Action painting. He knows exactly what country-blues looks like, and is familiar with the appearance of a howling effect, combined with hacked syllables, or that of some highfalutin spiritual yowl. From Max Bills Integration of 4 Systems to the carnival-like Sphynx by Heinz Edelmann, graphic artists use every clear line that comes their way to adapt the visual repertoire to that offered by the records. The magazine twen (in the capacity of program designer) does not, as the title might falsely suggest, aim at the twenty-year-olds but—just like its layout—wants to spread its impulse through all the generations. The series is so carefully thought out that it is fun to make the test of which record belongs to which sleeve. lt’s as easy as ABC: the seven clarinets suggest Benny Goodman, the Mississippi Steamer hints at New Orleans, and the high-society chorus is immediately evident. The advanced will easily recognize by scroll and neck that cello which Oscar Pettiford had discovered fourteen years earlier for cool jazz. And here is a puzzler for snobs: ice cubes tinted in various reds suggest the piano of Thelonious Monk, the high priest of bebop with his asymmetrical humor. In view of such a model series of commercial art, the attractively disguised musicians might even play a dirty tone on Shakespeare and audaciously proclaim: at Philips we shall meet again.
