AAAA NEWS

MOVING FORWARD TOGETHER It has been an exceptionally busy period of late for the AAAA as we continue to fight for our industry Since the last edition of Australian Automotive Aftermarket Magazine, it has certainly been a busy time for everyone in our industry and the AAAA as we work together to keep moving forward despite the uncertain times. Following is a quick summary of just some of the key headlines from this work undertaken over the past month.

The confidential Check helps workshops better understand how they are tracking in relation to other workshops across the country. After completion, a report is sent to you that includes your results and preliminary insights into what you can do to achieve your goals and realise your potential.

JobKeeper extended

Importantly your comparative performance is measured against three years’ worth of real-world data at a state and national level. We are finding that just taking the step of completing the Check can inspire thoughts on business improvement. You can take the free Workshop Health Check at survey.aaaa.com.au

At the time of writing, the Federal Government has just announced an extension to the JobKeeper and JobSeeker programs until 28th March 2021. The extension of JobKeeper in particular is a decision the AAAA welcomes and we know will make an enormous difference to our industry and our employees. Although the scheme will see reduced payment rates from the 28th of September 2020, the extension provides further stability for the industry through these challenging times. For the full breakdown on the JobKeeper extension, please review our news story posted on the 21st of July at www.aaaa.com.au.

Lobbying for change In the current economic climate, it is imperative that our automotive manufacturing base and Australian aftermarket companies are supported at all levels. Currently vehicles purchased or leased by government departments and authorities are imported and some government entities are ordering vehicles with pre-installed accessories and upgrades. This means that optional extras such as roof racks, bull bars, ute canopies and trays and tow bars are often imported products. This is despite having Australian product equivalents that are both cost competitive and generally superior to imported accessories. This practice is costing the local automotive industry millions of dollars. We are urging the Federal and State Governments to introduce a policy stating that options added to the vehicle should be purchased from Australian producers, where these exist. We are worldclass manufacturers of automotive aftermarket products, but the current government practices are shutting us out. Rest assured we are campaigning to change this.

Workshop Health Check As part of our commitment to the automotive repairers we have produced a Workshop Health Check and this free to industry initiative is already proving popular for the auto service and repair workshop sector.

Mandatory Data Sharing Although industry issues around COVID-19 have been a focus for the AAAA in the last few months, we certainly haven’t taken our foot off the pedal when it comes to the mandatory data sharing law. We recently wrote to the Assistant Treasurer, Michael Sukkar, in relation to several industry issues and asked for an update on mandatory data sharing. It was great to receive a response from him reaffirming that the mandatory scheme is still a priority for him and the government – particularly now with the heightened impact of the pandemic on small businesses. The Minister also encouraged us to continue working with Treasury to ensure the scheme is fitfor-purpose. Our work on this law will continue as we champion this issue on behalf of the industry and we will share further updates as they come to hand.

Mental health webinar The mental health of our employees is another critical issue impacting on our industry. The statistics on mental health are hard to ignore and there are significant benefits to be gained from creating a mentally healthy workplace. Open and constructive dialogue about the issue will also help break down barriers and the stigma that has in the past surrounded mental health. Mental health is always important, but in the current climate we need to remain ever vigilante to look out for each other and educate ourselves about how we can help those who may be struggling. With this in mind, we were pleased that our most recent webinar on supporting your employees’ mental health was well attended by our industry. The information provided was both educational and practical and we hope will make a tangible difference for workplaces and individuals. We

have made this webinar publicly available on the AAAA YouTube Channel and our Facebook page so please take the time to share this with your work colleagues.

Membership rate freeze Our membership rate freeze has received positive feedback, and we want to thank those who have already renewed their membership – your continued support drives us forward. We have also extended the membership payment date until the 30th of September, and we also encourage any members to reach out to us confidentially if you would like to discuss your personal situation around membership renewal.

We are here for you As always, we are here for you, so please contact us if you have any issues or suggestions that we can address. You can contact our team directly at info@aaaa.com.au For members, our Employer Assist HR/IR and Legal Hotlines continue to field enquiries and provide advice for employers on a range of issues. To contact them, call 1300 735 306 for Employer Assist or 1300 369 703 for the Industry Legal Hotline. Although it appears we are now facing a protracted period of COVID-19 related impacts, let’s keep pushing forward, stay positive and keep supporting each other.

For this reason, I am very pleased to announce an unprecedented dividend and rebate payment to all Capricorn Members. In total, AUD 24.1 million* will be redistributed to Members by way of dividend payments and a special COVID-19 rebate. The record payment is AUD 3.5 million more than rebates and dividend payments returned to Members last financial year and are a direct response to the COVID-19 pandemic which caused significant disruption to the industry. Capricorn has a long history of generating wealth for its Members via reward points, rebates and dividend payments. We are proud that we can continue to provide this to Members. In fact, shares in Capricorn have consistently returned distributions to Members over the years, including in periods of uncertainty and market instability such as the global financial crisis and the current COVID-19 crisis, which is a claim not many organisations can make. These dividends have been strong when measured against returns from other investments, which provides a further compelling reason for being a Capricorn Member. In addition to the dividend, Members receive a further return with the rebate based on their trade throughout the year. Truly, it pays to be a Capricorn Member. PASSING THE BATON AT DBA Phillip Joseph Snr has retired from the business he started nearly 40 years ago Tuesday the 30th of June 2020 marked the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter at Disc Brakes Australia (DBA). On that day Phillip Joseph Snr, known by many of his peers and colleagues as PJ, retired from the business that he started, shaped and grew for more than 40 years. Phillip started his automotive career in 1973 with his father Oscar at Sydney Clutch and Brake Exchange in Waterloo. One day around 1980, he found himself confronted with a request for a replacement brake rotor for a 1967 HD/ HR Holden, and so Phillip offered the owner a rotor, custom made by his father. While the castings had to be produced under difficult circumstances on general machinery in the automotive workshop, Phillip persisted and eventually made and sold his first aftermarket brake rotor in Australia. Although Oscar had the foresight to register the ‘Disc Brakes’ name as early as 1963, it was not until the 1980s that ‘Australia’ was added, as disc rotors became more commonplace and demand for replacement rotors started. Since those days, DBA has been a family owned company with its head office, engineering and production facilities based in Sydney. Under Phillip’s leadership, DBA has consistently focused on staying at the forefront of innovation and product design by introducing patented technology, including the Kangaroo Paw ventilation design, DBA’s T2 and T3 slotted rotor design, En-shield coating, and DBA’s 4000 Series and 5000 Series two-piece rotors for high-performance applications. Throughout his career, Phillip has led DBA to winning over 22 industry awards from the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA), including excellence in manufacturing and in export. In recognition of his services to the industry, Phillip was inducted into the AAAA’s Hall of Fame in 2011. Phillip has led numerous campaigns to improve safety standards and passionately supported the education of generations of mechanics through his work with the Institute of Automotive Mechanical Engineers (IAME) and TAFE. A true car man, Phillip has also worked closely with many motorsport outfits, whilst DBA ran its own Holden in the V8 Ute Racing Series. Phillip’s passion as of late has been growing DBA’s exports to over 30 countries in America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, focusing on a high-quality performance offering. Phillip is retiring from DBA, which was acquired by Australian ASX-listed GUD Holdings in 2018, with a well-deserved sense of pride shared by his team of loyal staff, many of whom have accompanied him on the journey for many years. It is now upon the new team, including his son, Phillip Jnr, who assumed the Position of General Manager Operations with the business a few years ago, to honour his legacy and lead DBA to reach new heights. Phillip says he is thankful for the lifelong friends he has made in the Automotive industry, not only in Australia but also around the world. For further information, contact DBA on 1800 730 039 or marketing@dba.com.au or visit www.dba.com.au

VICTORIAN WORK PERMITS REQUIRED Under the Stage Four Lockdown, workers of continuing businesses will be required to have a permit to travel for work For automotive businesses able to continue work through the Victorian Stage Four lockdown, there is a form which must be completed by both employer and employee and carried with the employee as they travel. To download the form, please visit www.dhhs.vic. gov.au/permitted-worker-permit-covid-19-doc The employer is required to state the permitted industry/activity on the form. Following are the required statements for each sector, taken from the Victorian Department’s list of permitted onsite industries:

Motor Vehicle Service and Repair • Vehicle repair, servicing and maintenance. • Automotive, machinery and equipment repair and maintenance are permitted to operate where providing support to a permitted service or industry or where required to maintain the health and safety of Victorians at home or at work.

Retail • Retailers work onsite for the purposes of fulfilling online orders. • Vehicle repair, servicing and maintenance. • Transport support services.

Vehicle Modifications • Vehicle repair, servicing and maintenance. • Automotive, machinery and equipment repair and maintenance are permitted to operate where providing support to a permitted service or industry or where required to maintain the health and safety of Victorians at home or at work.

Parts supply • Retailers work onsite for the purposes of fulfilling online orders. • Transport support services. • Vehicle repair, servicing and maintenance.

Manufacturing • Transport support services. • Vehicle repair, servicing and maintenance. “I know that AAAA members are all looking to respect the spirit of the new restrictions by ensuring we are all playing our part and doing the right thing to stop the spread of this highly transmissible disease. I have been deeply heartened by the number of members that are calling to make sure that they are doing the right thing,” AAAA Chief Executive Officer, Stuart Charity, said.

“There will be mixed experiences for our Victorian businesses and business owners. While many of our member businesses can continue to operate, the community-wide impact of the Stage Four restrictions is designed to dramatically reduce activity and movement which will impact demand for services. “We want all members to emerge from this pandemic in good physical and mental health, so do not hesitate to ask for help from experts who are well trained to support you or someone you care about. Now is the time to show high levels of care and compassion for others, and to look after yourself. “Remember, the AAAA team is here to support you. If you need any more information or clarification, please do not hesitate to contact us.” For more information, contact advocacy@aaaa.com.au To download the work permit form, visit www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/permitted-worker-permit-covid-19-doc

MESSE FRANKFURT DEFERS TWO VIETNAM TRADE FAIRS Automechanika Ho Chi Minh City has been rescheduled As a result of flight restrictions impeding business travel to Vietnam, Messe Frankfurt New Era Business Media Ltd has announced the postponement of two of its trade fairs in the country. With a respective focus on automotive services and the safety and security industry, Automechanika Ho Chi Minh City and Secutech Vietnam were originally scheduled to take place concurrently at the Saigon Convention and Exhibition Centre from 20 – 22 August. The shows will now be rescheduled to 2021. Restrictions that came into force in March to prevent the spread of COVID-19 continue to effect international travel to Vietnam. Logistical uncertainty has therefore hampered planning for the diverse international contingent of both events, with less than two months remaining before the trade fairs were scheduled to open. “As a responsible trade fair organiser, we hold a commitment to our participants that extends beyond the fairground to also include safe and

practical travel to the venue,” Messe Frankfurt Group Member of the Board of Management, Stephan Buurma, said. “Given that this cannot be guaranteed, we have decided that deferring both events to 2021 is the logical course of action. “Supporting government authorities, associations and industry players have shown great enthusiasm for both trade fairs to return stronger in 2021, when exhibitors will have more time to plan their travel arrangements, and the business circumstances will be more stable.” Sharing a common focus on technological innovations related to Industry 4.0, the IoT, and automation, Automechanika Ho Chi Minh City and Secutech Vietnam provide a gateway for both local and international suppliers to establish themselves in Vietnam. At its previous edition, Automechanika Ho Chi Minh City welcomed 359 exhibitors from 18 countries and regions, as well as over 8,900 trade visitors from the automotive service industry. The

fair has been gaining influence in the region since it was established in 2017 thanks to its extensive coverage of motorcycles, the commercial and passenger vehicle segments as well as automotive manufacturing and automation. The 2021 fair will take place from 30 June to 2 July at the Saigon Convention and Exhibition Centre. COOLDRIVE EXPANSION With move into Alice Springs CoolDrive’s national footprint of branches continues to expand, with the opening of the brand’s 33rd store. Joining the expanded Darwin branch, which opened in 2017, CoolDrive says the new Alice Springs outlet ensures comprehensive coverage for the entire Northern Territory. CoolDrive is represented in all states and territories, and also has three branches in New Zealand. Australian family owned and operated, CoolDrive’s presence in the Northern Territory services some very specific requirements demanded by the local area, such as heavy duty and 4WD. “Our growth and expansion in the NT is all a part of our long term strategy; we’re not being reactive with current circumstances, but staying on our own path as much as possible,” CoolDrive Auto Parts Chief Executive Officer, John Blanchard, said.

“The Northern Territory is unique within Australia for the range of applications serviced, with CoolDrive having developed a very thorough understanding of the local conditions over many years. “Backed up by our significant warehouse facility in Darwin, as well as our nationwide network, we can now service our customers in Alice Springs and Central Australia better than ever before.” Set to find favour with locals will be the Hulk 4x4 range, from air, wheel and tyre accessories, to caravan and trailer equipment, cargo management, electrical, lighting, recovery equipment and more, which for the first time will be available in an Alice Springs outlet. The branch is supervised by Bramwell Bronson, who brings a host of experience to the business with his expansive knowledge at the service of the local auto trade. CoolDrive Alice Springs is located at 9 Dalgety Road, Alice Springs, and is contactable via 08 7913 7122 or alicesprings@cooldrive.com.au For more information, visit www.cooldrive.com.au 8

TOOLS.COM ACQUIRES AUTOELEC.COM.AU The acquisition was completed in March this year While Tools.com plans to launch an industrial B2B global eCommerce platform in early 2021 for tools and safety products, the AutoElec component of the business focuses on the automotive, 4WD and outdoor leisure categories. AutoElec.com.au, traditionally a family-run operation, is said to be one of Australia’s most trusted Automotive Retailers with over 43 years in the industry. This year the business celebrates its tenth year and boasts 200,000 website customers, with eCommerce sales exceeding $170 million. Initially based in Bairnsdale (Victoria) the business’ head office is now joining the Tools.com office in Kew, Melbourne. “The addition of Autoelec.com.au to the Tools. com group is a strategic decision that will enable us to effectively and efficiently operate within the digital space for the benefit of our customers and supply partners in the years to come,” Tools.com Digital General Manager, Lee Blackmore, said. “The synergies with this acquisition will position AutoElec as a modern digital retailer and provide our suppliers with multiple ways of doing business with us. Including the ability to merchandise and promote their range directly to our audience.” That audience reach is reportedly around 15 million+ Australian customers which includes the standalone eCommerce website Autoelec.com.au, and its storefront on eBay, Amazon, Catch and Kogan marketplaces with more in channels added all the time. Recent stats in the Australia Post 2020 eCommerce industry report show that the number of people shopping online has grown by 31 percent this year when compared to the average in 2019. AutoElec.com.au has also seen its share of this growth as people stuck at home worked on their vehicles or planned caravan and camping getaways for once restrictions are lifted. “If there was ever a time to start implementing

an online strategy, now is it. Many manufacturers and distributors have been thinking about selling online for years now, but always get stuck on where to start. By partnering with us, we can help them start selling through multiple eCommerce channels without having to invest in additional staff or expensive software,” Lee said. “We also speak to a lot of vendors who are tired of traditional retailers either pricing their ranges noncompetitively or marketing them the wrong way. We give this power back to the brands themselves and let them be in charge of their destiny all via the one platform. “Currently, we have many vendors up and selling on our platform with more in the onboarding process. We will also be launching a full worldclass eCommerce marketplace dashboard in the coming months, where vendors will be able to upload inventory, process sales and receive indepth analytics”. “We invite any Automotive suppliers that are interested in fast-tracking their online strategy or expanding their online channels to get in contact with us to discuss an immediate onboarding strategy.” For more information, visit www.tools.com

GAINS PLUS EXPANDS NATIONALLY Its Buy Now Pay Later programs can help your customers beat the expense Gains Plus was established when its founders recognised capturing all available sales is getting harder and harder for automotive businesses to do. It says one of the key drivers in today’s market for this to occur is for automotive businesses to have a well serviced Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) program at their disposal. After doing some research, Gains Plus says it noted that although there are other BNPL programs in the market space, “there were none that would guide your business through all the processes while also having exceptional rates like Gains Plus.” Due to the success of Gains Plus within the industry in South Australia, it is now currently undergoing a national expansion. Gains Plus says this means it will be now able to support the automotive industry nationwide to provide independent businesses a new and innovative way of converting every quote to a sale and helping automotive businesses capture every lead. The company explains that its BNPL initiative has been built specifically for the automotive industry,

allowing consumers the option to spread their spend over three, six, nine or 12 months, with up to $2,000 available for them to access with no interest ever. Gains Plus says COVID-19 is highlighting the need for consumers to be able to “Beat the Expense with Common Sense” by using programs such as its offering to help balance their weekly budgeting. According to Gains Plus, today eight percent of all customer to business transactions are going through a BNPL platform. Further, it says that in two years’ time this figure is projected to be over 22 percent. As such, Gains Plus urges you to not miss out, stating that businesses which have a program like what it offers on average increase transaction value by 30 percent. The Gains Plus team says its BNPL platform is a great way to ensure every upsell is captured, and states that almost every automotive business it speaks with have been either losing revenue, holding back revenue, or reducing revenue due to customers not having the means to fund their purchase or repairs.

The Gains Plus BNPL program is aimed to assist businesses to increase quote to job conversions, provide a new avenue to direct more customers through the doors, and provide the opportunity to upsell at a low weekly cost to the consumer – plus your business is paid the very next business day directly into your bank account. Gains Plus says it offers an exclusive support program offering full training, full marketing and full customer support, with all support offered free of charge. GET GARRETT ADVANCING MOTION CERTIFIED Garrett Advancing Motion invites you to gain technical knowledge with Installer Connect With turbochargers becoming the norm on most vehicles, now is the time to be trained on the correct procedures for turbo diagnostics and replacement. The path to gaining recognition as a Garrett Turbo Installer starts on Garrett’s free training website, ‘Installer Connect.’ The tips from Garrett’s experts will get you on track to achieving the Garrett Advancing Motion recognition. Currently there are four levels of certification with a bonus racing level and a further fifth level to be added. Each level will give you more in-depth expertise about turbos, from what is a turbo to internal parts and functions and various troubleshooting conditions. You can proceed to the next level after you pass an exam to test your knowledge.

Turbo failure diagnostics you can learn from Installer Connect Before replacing a turbocharger, it is important to conduct a thorough diagnostic check of the engine systems and find the root cause of the vehicle’s problems. A lack of power, noisy operation, excessive smoke or oil consumption could result from a faulty fuel injection system, restricted or blocked air filter, a

damaged exhaust system or a lubrication problem. Also, check the engine crankcase pressure – a higher than normal reading can be caused by piston bypass or blocked breather system, and this requires your immediate attention. The preliminary steps before replacing a turbo are as follows: A. Question the customer on failure symptoms; B. Check the vehicle intervention and repair history; C. Run the vehicle to reproduce claim; and D. Run the diagnostic equipment as recommended by the car manufacturer; this will allow to read the error codes of the Engine Control Unit and indicate in which direction to look for the problem. If the diagnostic check does not uncover any obvious cause, make sure that an extensive trouble shooting analysis is completed on key areas such as foreign objects, lack of lubrication, oil contamination, over-speeding of the turbo and excessive temperature. This is important because turbo damage can often be a symptom of an underlying problem rather than the cause itself.

Garrett recommends you do not diagnose turbocharger failure by turbo replacement as this can be very costly as the replacement turbocharger could be destroyed in seconds if the root cause is not found and rectified. It says the number one cause of turbo failure on a new or worn turbo is oil contamination. EXCITING NEW BAPCOR CHALLENGE FOR MARTIN FARRELL Martin has been living and breathing automotive since he was a child After a remarkable 17 years occupying the Burson Auto Parts Product Manager role, Martin Farrell has recently taken an exciting new step in his automotive aftermarket industry career with Bapcor Limited. Martin has taken on the role of National Sales and Marketing Manager with Bearing Wholesalers, a leading automotive bearing re-seller. A part of the ever growing Bapcor Group of automotive aftermarket companies, Bearing Wholesalers reportedly provides a vast range of the world’s top brands alongside the company’s own in-house kitting program that includes premium quality replacement wheel bearing kits, gearbox kits, differential kits and timing belt kits.

Andrew Schram looking after the company’s entire product management. It has been a long and rewarding career and the growth that has taken place over this period has been incredible,” Martin said.

As Martin explains, this move represents a significant milestone change for his career, albeit one that sees him remain within Australia’s largest automotive aftermarket specialised company.

It is fair to say that Martin has been living and breathing automotive since he was a child, being fascinated with cars while growing up with three older brothers and becoming a mechanic as his first job. He has worked with HM Gem Engines, spent five years assisting in running the Burson Auto Parts Dandenong (VIC) store, was a store manager with Speed Pro Performance Parts and

LIQUI MOLY INVESTS IN AN AUSTRALIAN SUBSIDIARY The oil and additive specialist is set to re-organise its Australian business to enable growth plans A fundamental change to Liqui Moly’s sales and distribution strategy for Australia has been announced. The oil and additive specialist from Germany will take over the importation of all its products into Australia, with its newly established company Liqui Moly Australia Pty Ltd, with headquarters in Sydney. “This allows us to enter further into the market, offer better service and tackle new market segments,” Liqui Moly Director of Exports, Salvatore Coniglio, said. Liqui Moly has been a brand in Australia for more than 10 years and is currently being supplied to workshops through automotive parts retailers. Motorsport fans know the brand as the sponsor of the Liqui Moly Bathurst 12 Hour along with

other key branding investments across MotoGP and Formula 1. The company normally distributes its range of products through independent importers and distributors, with this being how it operates in well over 100 countries with its own subsidiaries in only five countries. Now Australia will become the sixth. “A subsidiary gives us more freedom to operate and opens up new opportunities,” Salvatore said. Liqui Moly says this starts with extensive in-house warehousing, which increases product availability and reduces delivery times. Connected to this is an expansion of the product range. “We are known mostly for our oils and additives, but we have around 4,000 products with all kinds of automotive chemicals. We want customers here in Australia to benefit even more from this wide range,” Salvatore said. Liqui Moly says it also has its sights set on new markets, such as commercial vehicles, motorcycles and boats. The aim is to reach more markets and more buyers with Liqui Moly products. Liqui Moly Australia will be headed up by Mark Johnson, who previously worked for Liqui Moly. Mark has a long history within the Australian

automotive aftermarket and more recently in e-commerce. “It was important for us that an Australian runs the business here,” Salvatore said. “We started supplying Liqui Moly to the Australian market back in 2008 by offering a small selection of additives and oils. “Re-organising our Australian operations will only strengthen our local brand experience, allow us to partner directly with our resellers, better support our core fan base and ensure continuity of supply.” “A subsidiary also enables efficiencies in our supply chain and a doubling down on our customer service promise,” Mark said. RECYCLING MATTERS Cradle to the grave initiatives keep Century Batteries focused on recycling Century Batteries says you don’t become Australia’s oldest and most recognised battery manufacturer without understanding responsible stewardship has to be part of your work ethic. The company explains it has a sustainable policy in that it uses as many recycled products in the making of its batteries (here in Australia) as it can. Century Batteries National Marketing Manager (Automotive), Andrew Bottoms, said there was still no Government legislation forcing manufacturers and retailers to participate in the responsible disposal of batteries. Andrew said there was also no significant funding or incentive for manufacturers or retailers to recycle. “Lead-based batteries are one of the world’s most recyclable products,” Andrew said. “Our commitment to environmental sustainability through our Used Lead Acid Battery (ULAB) program has seen Century achieve the prestigious, SAI Global ISO14001 environmental accreditation, an international standard outlining

the requirements for a structured approach to environmental protection and responsibility.” Century Batteries says its manufacturing process ensures all lead waste is recycled. The waste lead along with ULABs is recycled into lead alloys which Century then buys back from the recycler and is used in new products. “We use more than 60 tonnes of lead per day,” Andrew said. “30 percent of that lead used is recycled lead. Our recycling program boasts over 1100 registered Battery Recycling Centre’s around Australia.” Century Batteries says its green initiatives don’t stop there, explaining that in 2017 Century Yuasa partnered with Lite Group to develop recyclable packaging to move away from polystyrene. As a result, Century now uses almost 100 percent recycled packaging material in its battery distribution throughout the Century Batteries network. Century Batteries says its continued efforts towards sustainability include the instigation of a Water Efficiency Management Plan (WEMP), through

which the company has been capturing and reusing waste water from battery and equipment wash-down procedures for sulphuric acid dilution and other activities; the recycling and re-use of various waste streams (including plastic wrap, cardboard and wooden pallets); and the recycling of batteries through the Century Yuasa Battery Recycling program. Century Batteries is also a founding member of the Australian Battery Recycling Initiative, an alliance formed by battery manufacturers, recyclers, retailers, government bodies and environmental groups to promote the collection, recycling and safe disposal of batteries. EVUP ASKS: WHY TRANSITION TO LOW-EMISSION TRANSPORT? The cars we drive everyday contribute to half of Australia’s transport emissions and are a major contributor to outdoor air pollution EVUp explains that transport emissions are linked to 1,715 Australian and 399 New Zealand premature deaths each year; more than the annual accident road toll but without any of the prevention campaigns. These deaths are due to particulate matter released from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, including tiny airborne particles which get into lungs and the bloodstream and cause health issues like asthma and lung cancer. For our children in particular, EVUp – which is the proud co-founder of the Idle Off Project, (idleoff.com.au) a free online resource for school students to identify and mitigate the effect of idling vehicles on their health – says the health impacts of transport emissions rank higher as a risk factor for disease than exposure to passive smoking.

Are electric vehicles the answer? While there’s no such thing as a zero-emission vehicle, EVUp says EVs present a significant opportunity to reduce both tailpipe and fuel supply chain emissions when powered by renewable energy.

It is estimated that the manufacture of an EV produces around 10 percent more emissions than an ICE vehicle, however this carbon cost is more than offset over the course of the EV lifespan. Given the health risks, the greatest benefit of EVs is the removal of tailpipe emissions on our roads, around our schools, parks, playgrounds and communities. To illustrate this, recent images of cleaner air over our cities due to the pandemic lockdown has given us a glimpse into what an electrified transport future could look like.

EVs: one part of an overall solution Despite the benefits of electric vehicles, EVUp says the real solution is to reduce the number of vehicles on the road overall. The electrification of buses and the uptake of personalised electric transport such as scooters or bikes – and the infrastructure required to safely travel on and charge up at – is key to this. A full electric bus can take 40 cars off the road and EVUp says the efficacy of electric public

transport has been demonstrated in the Chinese city of Shenzhen which has a fleet of 16,000 electric buses to help move 12 million people.

An autonomous vehicle future? Imagine a household of four people who each need a car to get around. A single autonomous vehicle has the ability to ‘taxi’ each person to their destination before returning home to collect the next member of the household. While this might seem like a distant pipedream, autonomous passenger EVs should reduce the number of vehicles on our roads. EV disruptor Tesla has already enabled early adopter autonomous driving technology in some vehicles, however legal and regulatory frameworks will be the bottleneck to fully developing this technology. Overall, EVUp says rapidly evolving and innovative EV technology being developed worldwide will gradually decarbonise both passenger and commercial transport. Combined with charging infrastructure that’s powered by renewable energy, EVUp says our electric transport future will help us achieve cleaner cities and a brighter, healthier future. For more information about EV charging infrastructure and e-fleet consulting, EVUp invites you to contact its Project Lead, Jack Shaddock, at jack@evup.com.au

ALL HANDS ON DECK AT DAYCO AUSTRALIA Customer demand has required all of the company’s senior management executives to work on the warehouse floor While recent months have seen unprecedented disruption of Australian businesses across several industries, Dayco’s Australian and New Zealand automotive aftermarket business continues to defy the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The company reports that its Australian and New Zealand sales have increased year on year, which has seen Dayco Australia’s recently extended and modernised distribution centre located in Hallam (Victoria) operate at full capacity, literally requiring all hands on deck. Dayco Managing Director and Vice President Aftermarket Asia Pacific, Arnold Mouw; Sales and Marketing Director, David McClurg; Business Development Manager, James Barrett; Product Engineering Manager, Dom Adrien and Product Application Coordinators, Luke Sword and Jorg Kempka have left their offices and joined the warehouse and distribution centre team to

ensure Dayco customer orders are being speedily processed and delivered. During the past six months, despite the COVID19 disruptions, Dayco Australia explains it has maintained an impressive 97 percent plus order fill rate, as its valued team of hard-working distributors ensure busy Australian and New Zealand automotive repairers are promptly serviced. “Demand for our premium quality replacement engine belt, water pump and timing chain kits, pulleys, high performance harmonic balancers, moulded hoses and thermal management products to our aftermarket customers is at an all-time high,” Arnold said. “This is good news for the automotive aftermarket, as Australian automotive repairers are gaining more business as people use these periods of lockdown to repair and maintain their vehicles. The softening in new car sales also supports this increase in repair and maintenance-based services.” Customer demand of the Dayco range of premium quality automotive aftermarket products required all of the company’s senior management executives to work on the warehouse floor, assisting the hard-working distribution centre team. This has ensured prompt order processing and correct stock holding levels to meet this unprecedented demand. “It has been a very rewarding experience for the management team, as we have made several integral improvements by being on the floor and taking a much closer look at how to improve our warehousing operations,” Arnold said. Dayco’s Australian and New Zealand distributor

partners have been integral to this business growth and the company has placed total priority in supporting them by ensuring highly efficient and responsive distribution services, adhering to strict COVID-19 personal distancing and hygiene guidelines. In line with this growth, Dayco Australia has opportunities for people to join the company, particularly for experienced forklift drivers and warehouse personnel who have found themselves out of work due to the COVID-19 pandemic. GOVERNMENT PUTS INDUSTRY IDENTITY BRUCE PARKER HONOURED THE BRAKES ON received an OAM as part of the 2020 HOLDEN’S FINANCIAL Bruce Queen’s Birthday Honours SUPPORT GM Holden has been deregistered from the Australian Government’s Automotive Transformation Scheme Decisive action has been taken to ensure General Motors doesn’t see another cent in taxpayer support, after its decision to wind up the Holden brand in Australia. Minister for Industry, Science and Technology, Karen Andrews, said in a recent announcement that more than a million dollars in payments have been stopped, after GM Holden was deregistered from the Australian Government’s Automotive Transformation Scheme (ATS). “I, like most Australians, was extremely disappointed at GM Holden’s decision to walk away from our country, their local workers and loyal dealers,” Minister Andrews said. “Australian taxpayers have given this multinational company more than $2 billion in financial assistance over recent years, and it still decided without consultation to wind up the Holden brand in Australia.

“I think you’d be hard-pressed to find a single Australian who thinks GM Holden should receive financial support from the Federal Government in the same year they announced they’re leaving our shores.” The ATS reimburses eligible investment in research and development, and plants and equipment. Payments are made in arrears. The announcement from Minister Andrews explained the decision to deregister was made on the basis that GM Holden’s activities will no longer encourage competitive investment and innovation in the Australian automotive industry and place the industry on a sustainable footing. It reflects the loss to automotive research and development in Australia, including GM Design Australia and GM Holden Engineering teams, and the closure of GM Holden’s Lang Lang Proving Ground and Port Melbourne design studio. 14

CAR USAGE IN A COVID-19 WORLD In this article ACA Research, our partner in the AAAA Aftermarket Dashboard, takes a look at how vehicle usage is evolving in 2020 COVID-19 has changed the way we live, forcing us to re-evaluate behaviours we once took for granted. In Australia, this saw us locked down through April, gradually re-opening in May and June, and then reimplementing restrictions off the back of a second wave of infections through July. These experiences have fundamentally changed our movement patterns, with working from home becoming a ‘new normal.’ This leaves us however with a number of questions for the automotive sector. Australians might not be travelling to work, but in many cases, these were mass transit journeys, so what impact is that having on personal vehicle usage? Also, are we now more likely to use cars for local (or longer distance) trips, whether that be recreation, retail, or other forms of relaxation? To unpack these questions, we have taken a deeper look into Google’s COVID-19 Community Mobility Report. Using location data covering the period Feb – July ‘20, we get a longitudinal view of movement through the pandemic. At an overall level (Figure One), we can see the impact of nationwide lockdowns. Public transport usage is well down, with time spent at the workplace, at public places and at retail and recreational locations also experiencing substantial declines.

Figure One. Source: Google COVID-19 Community Mobility Report - Australia

Looking at overall numbers does not however tell the full story. Instead, we need to focus in on a more granular level. Firstly, we can see that time spent in the workplace (Figure Two), unsurprisingly dropped off during lockdown. While some states saw a level of recovery in May, we then however see that the recovery flattened out in June, with most normalising at reduced levels. Victoria is clearly the outlier here, Percentage change in time spent at the workplace

with a lower level of recovery in May and June (as they more slowly re-opened), followed by another dip in July off the back of the current outbreak. This will decline further in August, given the stricter restrictions now in force. Regardless, we can comfortably say that travel to work will stay at lower levels for the foreseeable future. Given this, it is no surprise that time spent at transport hubs has dropped off around the country (Figure Three). What is important to note here though is that while some Australians did start coming back to the office in May and June, usage of public transport stayed lower. Encouragingly for workshops, this means that where Australians are commuting, they are more likely to use personal vehicles. This is again a trend that’s likely to remain in place over the short to medium term. Beyond changes in workplace activity, March also saw Australians begin to tail off their visitation to parks and beaches (Figure Four). As we take this forward over time, we can see varying levels of recovery. Increased freedoms play a big role, but also the impact of closed borders on interstate movements. In particular here, Tasmania has struggled to regain lost ground given its heavy reliance on tourist trade. Queensland and the Northern Territory however saw the strongest rebound off the back of borders reopening in time for school holidays (which has turned out to be good timing with borders now closed again). This is again however largely promising for the automotive trade, with consumers likely to ensure they fix any niggling issues before embarking on a road trip North. Finally, let’s look at one of the most significantly impacted areas of the economy – retail (Figure Five). The Victorian data isn’t pretty, and is again likely to fall further in August. Despite this, July numbers were more promising for other states, with many consumers returning to shops, restaurants, and cafes at (or close to) pre-pandemic levels. Anecdotally however, this is again now slowing down, so this will be one area to monitor further in the August data. Taking the current behaviours forward, it is safe to assume that apart from Victoria, what we are seeing now will be the norm for the rest of 2020. Flexible working arrangements will stick around, but Australians will use cars for short (and longer) trips. Beyond that, it will depend to a great extent on the spread of the virus, but if current levels are maintained (and Victoria returns to a more manageable position), we can expect the status quo to continue into 2021, and potentially until we have a vaccine. Workshops around the country can therefore safely plan for this, assuming a level of demand going forward. Key however will be ensuring service delivery is catering to the greater level of caution we are seeing across the population. While EV sales have been rising steadily, mainstream adoption still remains a long way off: just one in 50 new cars sold globally is an EV. AUTOMECHANIKA DUBAI MOVES TO JUNE 2021 The show will now be held across 7-9 June, 2021 New dates have been announced for Automechanika Dubai, with the Middle East and Africa’s largest trade fair for the automotive service industry now scheduled for June 2021. Organiser Messe Frankfurt Middle East confirmed Automechanika Dubai’s 18th edition, which was originally postponed to October 2020, will now instead take place from 7-9 June 2021 at the Dubai World Trade Centre. The three-day event in 2019 featured 1,880 exhibitors from 63 countries, while drawing in 32,750 trade visitors from 146 countries, underlining its international scope; with more than 90 percent of exhibitors and 50 percent of visitors coming from outside of the UAE.

“We did our very best to hold Automechanika Dubai in October, however we now have our sights set on 2021, when the show will take place just a few months ahead of the Dubai Expo,” Automechanika Dubai Show Director, Mahmut Gazi Bilikozen, said. “We’ve been in regular contact with our customers, partners and supporting associations, and given the current situation, moving Automechanika Dubai to June 2021 is the logical decision. NEWS

2020 SEMA CANCELLED Show organisers are now looking ahead to 2021 The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) has announced that due to COVID-19 and concerns that event facilities and services will be unavailable, the SEMA Show will not be taking place in 2020. While both event organisers and industry members have been working tirelessly to deliver an outstanding SEMA Show in November, SEMA stated that mounting uncertainty has rendered continuing with the event inadvisable. SEMA said it expects the decision will bring much needed clarity to an uncertain picture and will help exhibitors, attendees and partners plan accordingly. Recent SEMA Show survey results indicated interest in a possible virtual tradeshow with related live elements. SEMA says it will be working with industry members to determine interest levels on specific alternatives.

SIR JACKIE STEWART OBE DRIVES NEW DEMENTIA RESEARCH An Australian research fellowship fuelled by the racing legend is set to kick dementia research into gear Sir Jackie Stewart OBE’s Race Against Dementia charity and the Dementia Australia Research Foundation have announced the launch of a new Australian dementia research fellowship. The ‘Race Against Dementia – Dementia Australia Research Foundation Post-doctoral Fellowship’ programme will support two early career researchers in the field of dementia prevention or treatment. Sir Jackie was named as an Honorary International Dementia Australia Ambassador earlier this year, and said he was delighted to be in partnership with the Dementia Australia Research Foundation to demonstrate Race Against Dementia’s global commitment to moving forward with funding dementia research. “My wife, Helen, was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in 2014, and ever since then I have devoted my efforts globally to raise funds and stimulate breakthroughs and innovations in dementia research,” Sir Jackie said. “Race Against Dementia’s vision is to apply a ‘Formula 1 attitude’ to work faster and smarter in order to achieve a breakthrough in the prevention or treatment of dementia. Formula 1 has the fastest problem-solving capability in the world, faster than aerospace, and it is this capacity that we need to build in dementia research.

“A key priority for Race Against Dementia is to form strong alliances with research centres of excellence globally and by establishing this fellowship we recognise Australia among this group and hope to attract the best and brightest researchers in this field.” Sir Jackie had planned to announce this news in March during the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne at a gala event that had been the inspiration of Melbourne based property investor, Craig Joel, who has thrown his passionate commitment behind the cause in honour of the long standing friendship between his late father Jack and Sir Jackie. The Chair of the Dementia Australia Research Foundation, Professor Graeme Samuel AC, said despite COVID-19 causing the event cancellation, Sir Jackie wished to honour his pledge and in so doing, acknowledge Craig for his commitment to supporting Australian dementia researchers.

“We too acknowledge Mr Joel for his enthusiasm and generosity of time and spirit to help to make this programme a reality,” Professor Samuel said. “And we are absolutely delighted to launch the fellowship powered by Sir Jackie’s vision and commitment to dementia research. “With the number of Australians living with dementia expected to increase to almost 1.1 million by 2058, research into dementia is now more urgent than ever. “By supporting up-and-coming researchers, we will be able to target the brightest new minds whilst at a critical crossroads for choosing a research path. “This means that we are not only supporting them to solve another piece of the dementia puzzle now, but hopefully cementing their career-long focus on dementia research. “These fellowships form part of the Dementia Australia Research Foundation’s 2020 grant round, with over $1.7 million in funding on offer for early-career researchers. “This is a fantastic initiative and successful applicants will have extended opportunity to develop global networks and collaborate through the Race Against Dementia network.” The Post-doctoral Fellowships in Australia will become the third major Race Against Dementia fellowship programme alongside Alzheimer’s Research UK and The Mayo Clinic, USA. Two, three-year dementia research fellowships of $405,000 will be awarded, in biomedical, clinical or psychosocial areas of dementia research. Fellowships include a generous salary as well as funding for project expenses. Fellowship applications close on 21 August 2020 with the grant recipients to be announced in January 2021. MONROE LAUNCHES NEXT EVOLUTION SUSPENSION TECHNOLOGY Monroe says it continues to lead the industry in Original Equipment and aftermarket suspension technology, ensuring general automotive repairers and suspension specialists have access to the same suspension technology as the world’s leading vehicle manufacturers Along with providing the nation’s most durable and advanced replacement ride performance products, Monroe Australia says it is also committed to assisting the trade in supporting their business growth during the unprecedented disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Testament to this commitment is the 2020 launch of Monroe Intelligent Suspension - RideSense. This premium replacement electronic shock absorber range offers Australian automotive service workshops and suspension specialists with 23 direct-fit part numbers for popular modern makes and models. These new shock absorbers reportedly provide workshops with the most advanced replacement shock absorbers that are completely compatible with Monroe manufactured Original Equipment electronic suspension systems. Once a concept of futuristic automotive wishful thinking, Monroe’s world leading research and development has taken the concept of constant

compression and rebound force adaptability for different driving conditions to reality for leading vehicle manufacturers. Monroe explains it then ensured these technologically unparalleled ride performance products were promptly made available to the automotive aftermarket. Unlike traditional passive suspension systems that use mechanical shock absorbers and springs to control suspension movement, intelligent suspensions feature electronic dampers that adjust a vehicle’s ride and handling characteristics based on driver preference and changes in the driving environment. Many vehicle brands including Audi, BMW, Ford, Infiniti, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Peugeot, Renault, Seat, Skoda, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Volvo offer models equipped with adaptive suspensions from the Monroe Intelligent Suspension product portfolio. Monroe Intelligent Suspension - RideSense shock absorbers connect directly to a vehicle’s Electronic Control Unit (ECU). The ECU sends the shock absorbers vehicle performance data, including acceleration, body displacement and steering angle. Each RideSense shock absorber then uses this data to adapt its compression and rebound force settings within ten milliseconds to provide superior handling, comfort and vehicle safety by ensuring constant tyre to road contact. Featuring a host of Monroe leading-edge technologies including highly advanced valving, Monroe says these new shock absorbers ensure the continuation of an “as new” driving experience for motorists driving vehicles fitted with Monroe developed Original Equipment electronic suspension systems. Monroe also provides its industry leading fiveyear product warranty on all RideSense shock absorbers. This along with the vast Monroe OE Spectrum shock absorber range, remain the only ride performance products with a five-year warranty, says Monroe.

Monroe helps to grow businesses out of COVID-19 Monroe says it is committed to ensuring your business can service and repair the very broad variety of makes and models on Australia’s roads by providing the latest in ride performance technology, while also providing this country’s largest range of general passenger, commercial/ 20

heavy duty, 4WD and SUV model ride performance replacement products. This has never been more important than right now. Just like most Australian consumer service businesses, 2020 has exposed unprecedented financial and operational challenges for automotive repairers and suspension specialists alike. As more vehicles are returning to our roads and with new car sales softening, more people are electing to retain and maintain their cars. Both of these factors provide business growth opportunities for automotive repairers and specialists. An important vehicle safety factor that tends to be overlooked is the checking of worn shock

COVER STORY absorbers. According to independently sourced market statistics, the current Australian industry standard for shock absorber replacement is eight out of every 100 vehicles serviced or inspected. Based on known shock absorber wear rates for urban driving kilometres travelled, it is clear from these suspension replacement statistics that not enough vehicles are being checked for shock absorber wear. If your workshop’s shock absorber replacement rate is low, Monroe conservatively estimates you are missing out on approximately $44,000 of revenue per year. To assist automotive repairers and suspension specialists to grow their business as more vehicles return to our roads, Monroe has produced a sixminute video explaining how to improve your business’ shock absorber replacement rate. By providing your details and watching this video, you could win $100 Monroe Money cards or a set of Monroe OE Spectrum shock absorbers for the vehicle of your choice, drawn each month until November 2020. Monroe invites you to visit the Monroe Australia website at www.monroe.com.au/workshop All too often, many customers only learn their shock absorbers need replacement when something has gone terribly or tragically wrong. By informing your customers of the increased emergency stopping distances, reduction of steering response and excessive tyre wear effects of worn shock absorbers, you are assisting them to make sensible and highly responsible vehicle maintenance decisions. Further, Monroe says that by selecting its products, you are providing your customers with quality direct-fit shock absorbers for their cars, designed and manufactured to meet or exceed Original Equipment specifications. The Monroe Win and Watch business growth initiative joins Australia’s leading aftermarket ride performance product manufacturer’s popular and well-established workshop customer support program, the Monroe Safety Specialist program. This localised marketing and promotional program

has reportedly assisted to significantly increase automotive workshop shock absorber inspection and replacement enquiries and subsequent shock absorber replacement business for more than a decade. Monroe explains that its Safety Specialist Program enables any automotive workshop no matter what size, to become a direct part of Monroe’s national marketing strategy. Monroe Safety Specialists are listed on the Monroe Dealer Locator page located at www.monroe.com.au which is used by more than 20,000 consumers per month to locate their local suspension checking and replacement expert. Your own business is also featured as a Monroe Safety Specialist on the Monroe website complete with a photo and contact details while a toll-free national hotline number ensures you capture car owners seeking suspension checking and replacement in your area. Monroe says this along with its major national advertising and consumer communications efforts, generates repeat customer leads from motorists in your local area. An affordable $75 investment provides every Monroe Safety Specialist with point of sale marketing collateral including a framed certificate, one counter mat, note pads and pens, 25 seat protectors, a tyre pressure gauge, product information and brochures. This ensures your customers can easily identify your business as a Monroe approved and supported shock absorber inspection and replacement workshop that genuinely cares about road safety. In addition, every member of this exclusive program also gains unlimited access to Monroe’s detailed technical database of application information, fitment tips and advice thanks to free membership to Australia’s largest automotive technician online community, www.mechanic.com.au (valued at $195). This access can assist with locating new technicians and gaining advice on improving workshop operating practices, while also offering additional promotion for your business. In addition to this, Monroe says it also supports suspension replacement business growth through equipment that increases productivity and assists technicians in testing worn shock absorbers. Monroe explains that the Monroe Shock Absorber Tester is an easy to use handheld high-tech tool that enables automotive technicians to test shock absorber wear on passenger and light commercial vehicles within seven minutes. The tool reportedly makes it easier to clearly identify an otherwise invisible danger to vehicles that you are servicing using rebound and damper ratio methodology. Technicians can also Bluetooth-link the tester to print reports for their customers. Monroe also exclusively provides another important tool to assist workshops in increasing their suspension business, productivity rates and workplace safety: the Branick 7600 Strut Spring Compressor.

This complete metal spring compressor is suitable for use across a vast range of simple and more difficult coil configurations, featuring a long handle that provides extra torque to make compression both easier and safer to use. It can be wall or trolley mounted and can safely handle the entire spring exchange requirements for most Australian workshops including Heavy Duty, Ford F-150, Toyota Hilux and FG Falcon models without the need for additional adaptors. “By offering the latest suspension technology to the aftermarket and supporting our trade customers, we are assisting their business growth with our Watch and Win video along with our well established and successful Monroe Safety Specialist program,” Monroe Marketing Manager, Brydon Tweddell, said. “We are also ensuring that independent repairers can meet aftermarket demand while helping to increase general shock absorber replacement business during this challenging time. “More importantly, our support measures and specialised tools are also designed to set the foundations in place for suspension business growth well into the future.” Monroe invites you to become a Monroe Safety Specialist or find out more about Monroe’s workshop tools by contacting your Monroe Territory Manager or calling Monroe Australia’s customer service team on 1800 088 205. LIGHTING UP THE NIGHT AEI is celebrating a 20-year global partnership Auto Electrical Imports (AEI) says the release of its new Scorpius PRO 445 combines Aussie resilience with European ingenuity in a true global partnership.

Safe lighting solutions built tough to save time and money The changing nature of the build process creates a challenge for contractors trying to provide adequate lighting. The ability to access power, being able to safely evacuate in emergencies and night-time operation of heavy vehicles are just the beginning. AEI and Nordic say they have worked to bring products to Australia which stand up to the effects of vibration, shock and dust without compromising the light needed to keep worksites safe. “The products we bring to market from Nordic provide essential safety and uptime benefits,” AEI Managing Director, Norman Haupt, said.

Scorpius PRO 445 AEI says the Scorpius PRO 445 is a brand-new heavy-duty work lamp offering unparalleled performance in a compact body size. “Going back to the drawing board Nordic has incorporated cutting-edge materials and components in the design and manufacture of the Scorpius Pro,” Norman said. “In product development for over three years, engineers brought the Scorpius Pro 445’s weight down to only 1kg, so it is smaller, lighter and has a more compact design.

A lens with exceptional heat tolerance “Nordic have used Grilamed, a new material in the manufacture of the Scorpius pro lens. Grilamed is a high-performance polyamide developed and manufactured in Switzerland,” Norman said. “It is resilient to impact, fatigue and atmospheric conditions; and has high transparency and superior electromagnetic capability. “The use of Grilamed has allowed us to produce a Work lamp range with not only exceptional physical performance but also exceptional light output and patterns.” With high operational light output of 4400lm and low power consumption, AEI says the durable Scorpius PRO 445 can stand up to demanding environments. The Scorpius Pro has a five-year warranty and IP68 and IP6K9K and SAE J1455 ratings. AEI says it has the expertise to help companies design and build customised lighting systems to include the work lamp.

Best LED Work Light in Trailer Magazine In March 2020, an independent European test was conducted by Trailer Magazine with 13 different work lamp models on the market, with the Scorpius PRO 445 emerging victorious over the competition. The jury concluded the Scorpius PRO 445 incorporated very efficient physical design allowing exceptional dissipation of heat. This enabled the light to perform consistently with high levels of output for long working periods even in hot environments.

“They said it was the best balance between size and light output and quality for anyone who wants a light that illuminates a broad area,” Norman said. Norman believes design and a superior quality of components used in the Scorpius PRO 445 ranked it ahead of the competition, stating that Nordic has sourced the quality products from around the world to manufacture this nextgeneration work lamp.

A long standing partnership Norman explains that AEI has been working with Nordic Lights for more than 20 years. “From major roadworks to the transport of goods using heavy vehicles – while most of the country sleeps – huge infrastructure projects are delivered across the country,” Norman said. “In today’s 24/7 economy, civil and construction works simply can’t allow for darkness 50 percent of the time. “AEI and Nordic Lights create products that are built for industries where safety is paramount. “AEI has worked with Nordic Lights to create an international partnership that has seen us first to market with innovative lighting systems and over the last 20 years AEI and Nordic have created, tested and proven safety lighting systems. “Our products are often tried and tested at mine sites. They are developed for tough environments and crossover to withstand the demands of civil construction sites.” Nordic Lights Business Director, Lena SmedsFuru, said working with AEI had seen strength and growth in the market through teamwork and continuous effort.

“We could never have been successful without the work and contribution of great, loyal partners like IONNIC,” Lena said. “We value the long-term partnership with IONNIC during the last 20 years and look forward to many more years of continued distribution and partnership.” AEI provides specialist lighting, safety and electrical solutions for mobile plant and equipment in the automotive, mining, OEM, transport and construction industry worldwide. filter bank 1 malfunction ECM – ECM; and P242F (9263) - Particle filter maximum load exceeded ECM – ECM.

Cause: High soot loading in the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). The Fix: 1. Read the fault memory of engine ECM. 2. If no fault is logged and only the DPF light is on, then the vehicle needs DPF regeneration. a. The DPF light does not signify a fault with the vehicle but means the vehicle has not managed to regenerate the DPF due to frequent short journeys, stop/start trips or insufficient exhaust gas flow. b. To regenerate the DPF, change to a driving profile as described in the owner’s manual. 3. If a fault has been logged in the ECU, action the fault, and carry out an emergency DPF regeneration

4. Inspect the intake and boost system for leaks (including all the hoses and pipe work). 5. Read out the live data for the DPF pressure and temperatures with the ignition on and at idle, the engine must be above 80°C. DPF pressure should read: • Ignition on – 0 mbar +/- 1.5 mbar (if outside these specs, then the fault should be a defective pressure sensor or wiring defect). • Engine idling – 10 mbar +/- 5 mbar (below would require checking the DPF is intact; over would suggest a partially blocked DPF). 6. Check if all the warning lights for DPF, preglow and engine management are on. If they are all on, possible reasons include: the soot loading is over 45mg and the vehicle is running in emergency operation; the regeneration cut-off time of 4500 seconds has been exceeded; or the soot loading may not be above 45mg to carry out an emergency regeneration. In any of these cases, an emergency DPF regeneration would be required. Please note – the engine control module will not allow a regeneration if the soot loading is over 45mg. However, a professional clean and resetting of the DPF learnt values may suffice. 7. Inspect other components in the exhaust system before you replace the DPF as it may not be necessary to do this. Inspection of the following components would be required: • G450 - Exhaust gas pressure sensor • G506 / G448 - Temperature sensor before DPF • G507 / G235 - Temperature sensor before the turbocharger • G527 - Temperature sensor after the FPF • G70 - Air Mass meter • G39 - Lambda Probe 8. If you cannot find a fault with any of the above exhaust components, rectify the DPF fault before you re-assess the soot loading of the DPF through the measuring groups. JENOK WIPER BLADES Trusted by more than 1,100 workshops across Australia

Jenok explains it specialises in the design and development of aero wiper blades for passenger vehicles and has been supplying automotive workshops for many years. John Warne, who established the business in 2011, says that to meet the growing demands of customers for a better product the decision was made to produce locally. “This was easier said than done, with many teething problems and quite a few upset customers which thankfully stuck by us and we now can say we are mostly there,” John said. “Manufacturing in Australia makes it easier for us to meet the growing demands of our customers and we continue to invest and keep ahead of the market with an ever-growing list of new wiper blade types and attachments for our customers to keep on hand. “At Jenok we are passionate and focused on quality and committed to making constant improvements to our products. “We have invested in the latest pressure mapping systems from the USA to make sure our wiper blades have an exact distribution of pressure along the length of the wiper blade which aids us to create a longer lasting product. In addition, we are constantly undertaking research and development so we can make design and material improvements. “Over the last few years we have introduced a unique design which makes our wiper blade refillable. This means it easy to replace just the wiper rubber in seconds with no need to replace the whole assembly at every service which customers really appreciate. “We also always ensure all of the components we use in the manufacturing process are of the highest quality – this is critical in our pursuit of offering the best wiper blades on the market. “For example, our cold rolled flat wire from Europe with a zinc aluminium coating provides good corrosion resistance and keeps its tension over time, which makes for a longer lasting wiper blade and is the choice of car manufacturers the world over.” As well as its wiper blades, Jenok also offers adapter kits which include nine different adapters. “By providing an adapter kit instead of providing all adapters in our packaging, we are seeing one used per wiper which saves eight going to landfill – that’s 8,000 adapters saved for every thousand wipers sold,” John said. “Thanks to our unique refillable design and separate adapter kit, we hope to tread a little lighter when it comes to our impacts on the environment. “With the ever-changing models and adapter types, our range of wiper blades are a must for any busy service centre and we offer them at a trade price that simply makes sense. “We have enjoyed some really great support from our customers over the years and this has only driven us to be better.” Jenok says its website allows for easy online ordering and features aero blades in all sizes from 14 inch to 28 inch as well as a full range of metal frame wiper blades and wiper blade refills. NEW FROM MILWAUKEE TOOL New cordless impact wrenches pack a punch Milwaukee Tool says it is proud to introduce its powerful new M12 FUEL Right Angle Impact Wrenches. “When completing applications that allow limited access, professionals are limited to using pneumatic or brushed-motor right angle impacts. However, the limited portability and torque associated with these solutions has been a frustration for these users,” Milwaukee Tool Product Manager, Michael Di Lorio, said. “Due to our extensive research with users on the jobsite and in workshops, we saw an opportunity to create a cordless solution that not only boasts the benefits of no compressors, hoses, and routine maintenance, but is also equipped with a lowprofile design and higher torque to tackle these types of applications.” Available in 3/8” and 1/2” sizes, the new M12 FUEL Right Angle Impact Wrenches are equipped with a long body profile, providing more access and ultimate control in hard to reach applications.

The low-profile head of only 71mm for the 3/8” and 75mm for the 1/2” easily fits into tight spaces and allows users to be more productive, decreasing the need for socket extensions commonly used with pistol-grip impact tools. “With over 90 solutions, M12 FUEL power tools are designed, engineered, and built to deliver extreme performance and productivity,” Michael said. The M12 FUEL Right Angle Impacts’ POWERSTATE Brushless Motor delivers up to 300Nm of nut-busting torque, removing stubborn bolts and fasteners; while its REDLINK PLUS Intelligence ensures you achieve maximum performance and protection against overloads, over-heating, and over-discharge. When paired with the Milwaukee M12 REDLITHIUM Battery Packs (not included), Milwaukee says the Right Angle Impact Wrenches have the power and speed to tackle various applications without dips in performance.

In addition, the wrenches have been designed with a four-mode DRIVE CONTROL feature, providing users “unmatched control” and the versatility to switch between modes to match the power and speed necessary for the application at hand. Modes one to three provide RPM and IPM adjustments for maximum precision, and Mode four is equipped with Auto Shut-off in forward and Bolt Removal Mode in reverse. The Auto Shut-off Mode will prevent over-tightening of bolts by applying no more than 20Nm of torque while the Bolt Removal Mode provides more control by drastically slowing down RPMs once the bolt is loosened. LED AUTOLAMPS RELEASES AUSTRALIA-FIRST SYSTEM LED Autolamps says this new approach could result in safer road travel for all A cutting-edge new design from LED Autolamps will see all the markers down the side of large trailers act as side direction indicators. LED Autolamps says the extra volume of light provided by this design will give other vehicles plenty of warning about the intention of larger vehicles as they look to merge into traffic. The lamp has a standard function Red/Amber side marker with an overriding function of Side Direction Indicator. So when the indicator is active, the marker is disabled, explained LED Autolamps. The new system utilises LED Autolamps’ all-new 97 series side marker/indicator combination lamp, which is Australian road approved for Category five side direction indicator as well as an amber/red side marker. The lamps are large trailer plugin harness compatible, enabling them to be easily daisy-chained down the length of the vehicle or incorporated into an existing LED Autolamps harness setup. It is available as standard Three-Core with bare wires or Three-Core with plug for the harness system and is also compatible with LED’s standard markers. This adaptability allows you to add any combination of marker lamps or marker/indicator lamps and LED Autolamps says you can also add a licence plate lamp to the Three-Core harness system. LED Autolamps explains this innovative new

product features a surface mounted base that enables both the lens and bezel to clip neatly into place and conveniently conceals the mounting hardware with no visible screws. And to finish, LED Autolamps has also made available a front and rear end outline marker version that not only functions as a road approved marker but also acts like an indicator that is supplementary to the existing indicator functions. “This new concept in truck and trailer lighting will make our roads safer,” LED Autolamps Managing Director, Tony Ottobre, said. “The original all in one Side Marker/Indicator lamp will revolutionise road safety, helping to save lives. Incorporating this into your trailer lighting will not only give you the confidence when indicating to merge but also make you the first with this technology in Australia!

“This new system involves an enhanced lens design with powerful LEDs to operate in a dual function purpose with Amber/Red side markers and category 5/6 side direction indicators. “Currently, there is only need for one category five or six side direction indicator to be used on each side of a semi-trailer 7.5m or longer. However, we believe that by having effectively the entire trailer indicating the direction of the vehicle it will have a significant effect on the reduction of articulated and heavy truck road fatalities across Australia.” LED Autolamps offers a peace of mind five-year warranty. Supplied in a single retail blister pack or in bulk for original equipment manufacturers, LED Autolamps says these lamps are guaranteed to give you years of trouble-free service. ACS LAUNCHES DCT TOOL HIRE PROGRAM The only cost associated with the hire program is a small handling fee and the tools come sealed from ACS Australian Clutch Services has introduced a DualClutch Transmission (DCT) tool hire program to support this growing market in Australia. This program has been specifically developed to support workshops looking to expand their income stream and take on DCT clutch assembly replacement jobs but have been put-off by the high cost of specialised tools required for the removal and installation process. For several years, ACS has been growing its range of both wet and dry DCT replacement clutch components under its ClutchPro brand and now offers an extensive range of replacement clutch assembly units, gearbox repair kits, flywheels and specialised removal and installation tools.

The tool hire program includes some of the most common vehicle specific and universal DCT clutch installation and removal tools and is available with the purchase of any applicable DCT clutch kit through ACS’ nationwide distribution network. The only cost associated with the hire program is a small handling fee and the tools come sealed from ACS, ready to be used by the workshop. “We have been working on our DCT range for a number of years now and can supply both wet and dry style replacement clutch kits and components for these transmissions,” ACS Managing Director, Brenton Jordan, said. “We have also been working hard to deliver technical support information for these applications and have several videos available on YouTube that step through the installation process for many common applications. “The addition of the tool hire program allows workshops that may have been put-off by the cost and complexity of these jobs, to introduce this service into their businesses without incurring the significant cost of the vehicle specific tools. “We hope this will help to open up this market to a range of workshops throughout the country.

With these transmissions quickly becoming more and more common throughout the Australian car parc, it is a great area for workshops to look at for service expansion.” ACS offers replacement kits and tools for vehicles such as VW, Ford, Audi, Renault and Hyundai to name a few. Despite the significant range already on offer, ACS says it is working to further develop its offering with the introduction of mechatronics units and transmission service components. “We are still developing our DCT offering for the Australasian market,” Brenton said. “We have several exciting new additions coming to the range very shortly and we continue to invest in this product line to support our distribution network around the world.” For more information on the DCT range of products from Australian Clutch Services, please visit www.australianclutch.com.au

BRIDGESTONE LAUNCHES STREET LEGAL, TRACK WARRIOR Introducing the Potenza RE-71RS Bridgestone says it has upped the ante on the ‘street to track’ concept with the introduction of the RE-71RS. The new street legal semi slick promises increased grip levels, improved handling and better wear life over its predecessor, the RE-71R, while retaining practicality for everyday use. The Potenza RE-71RS is Bridgestone’s entry-level motorsport product, positioned above the road focused RE003 and S007A in terms of outright dry grip, and as a street legal alternative to the track only RE-11S product. “Semi-slick tyres are often a misunderstood segment of the market, with many enthusiasts mistaking them as only for track use. In the development of the Potenza RE-71RS, Bridgestone was careful to ensure it delivered the performance track days demand, while also being suitable for day-to-day driving,” Bridgestone Australia Sales Director, Heath Barclay, said. “As a result, the RE-71RS removes the need to have separate tyres for track use as well as a more comfortable set for the rest of the week. Track day enthusiasts will be drawn to the performance 32

of the RE-71RS, while the improvements to grip levels, wear life and everyday noise levels will make it a prime choice for this segment of the market due to its versatility.” Bridgestone says the RE-71RS’ tread pattern design boasts an 11 percent larger contact area than its predecessor through the use of a high-grip polymer compound for exceptional grip levels in dry conditions. At the same time, the slick outer shoulder allows for maximum contact, increasing the tyre’s cornering capabilities, while two deep grooves provide high levels of water drainage to deliver strong wet performance characteristics. Driver feedback is also reportedly direct because of the tyre’s rigidity, improved by the low angled grooves along the tyre face. Tyre life is also improved, with a five percent increase in wear life over the predecessor due to the asymmetric tread design and uniform contact pressure reported by Bridgestone, which states the benefit extends to the road, with greater wear life and lower noise than conventional semi-slick tyres. Bridgestone says Potenza RE-71RS has been tested extensively by Bridgestone’s R&D department

in Japan, demonstrating an improvement to the average lap time of 1.1 percent, with a peak lap time improvement of two percent. A further 8,000km of durability testing was conducted, with tyre rotations conducted at every 2,000km to validate the five percent wear life improvement in extreme conditions. Bridgestone is launching the RE-71RS in 27 sizes ranging from 15 – 20 inch options, all warehoused locally. “The Potenza RE-71RS is a step up for practical, entry-level motorsport performance, and with a wide range of sizes and good availability, we’re confident customers will reap the benefits of this new tyre,” Heath said. EFFICIENT SOLAR SETUPS FOR AUTOMOTIVE TOURING REDARC offers a range of products to help you complete your setup The importance of solar power in automotive touring setups has never been more popular as travellers endeavour to extract as much power from solar as possible to charge up their batteries to run all those camping essentials and luxuries.

DC-DC Battery Chargers and Battery Management Systems with in-built MPPT An MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) regulator is integral to efficiently generating solar power. The output from a MPPT solar regulator is optimised by using the maximum current possible at the required voltage, to continuously extract all the power available from the panel. REDARC says it is particularly useful in varying and low light level situations, such as cloud cover or dusk/dawn, as it will automatically adjust and find the new point at which the solar cell delivers its maximum power output. MPPT converts the panel voltage to the required output voltage, allowing maximum power to be generated by the panel even if the battery being charged is severely discharged. The result of this is more charge going into the batteries and increased free camping capabilities. REDARC explains that its BCDC Dual in-vehicle DC-DC chargers and its Manager30 Battery Management System have in-built MPPT solar regulators to deliver the maximum amount of power from the solar panels, even during low light conditions. They are also equipped with Green Priority Power, so when 12-volt solar power is available, solar power will be used before topping up the output charging current from another source such as mains power or DC vehicle power when on the move. The Manager30 is a 30A complete Battery Management System that charges and maintains the auxiliary batteries and incorporates AC, DC and

solar inputs to achieve the best charge. It is now available with a choice of a standard monitoring screen (BMS1230S3) or a full colour screen with app (BMS1230S3R) displaying the charge status and critical system information. The in-vehicle BCDC Dual Battery Chargers are compatible with 12V or 24V vehicle systems, standard or variable/smart alternators, and have patented charging profiles for all battery types. There are BCDC Mounting Brackets available to aid installation and designed to suit most popular 4WD vehicles.

Solar panels and blankets To complete a vehicle integrated set up, REDARC says its Fixed Glass Solar Panels feature a double channel aluminium frame that creates a strong setting for the solar panels, and the tempered glass coating provides extra protection from the elements. With the right mounting kits the user can even adjust the angle to better capture the sunlight. Alternatively, REDARC says its non-fixed Portable Folding Solar Panels feature A grade Monocrystalline cell technology and adjustable lightweight legs to be angled towards the sun and be moved around as required. It explains the Amorphous and SunPower Cell Solar Blankets are highly portable and lightweight, so they can be easily moved around to capture the maximum amount of sunshine. NEW CARBON HIDDEN WINCH MOUNTS Retaining your factory 4WD look while being conscious about accessory weight Weight in 4WDs is a huge consideration when equipping them with 4WD accessories. Excess weight on a 4WD can have many adverse effects on your wallet thanks to fines from being over GVM, added fuel costs from heavy accessories, additional wear and tear on vehicle components, and diminished off-road ability. Carbon Off Road says its philosophy of offering light weight accessory options to 4WDers has shown that big and heavy is not always the way to go. New to the Carbon range is the in bumper winch cradle, which allows you to mount a winch to your 4WD without having a heavy bullbar mounted to the vehicle. The cradles generally mount behind the bumper, retaining the OE look of your vehicle. With an average weight of 10-15kgs dependent on the application, the cradles come complete with vehicle specific instructions and have an RRP of $895.00.

Carbon Off Road says that when paired with a Carbon 12k Winch – which only weighs 23.45kgs fitted (which Carbon Off Road says makes it one of the lightest winches on the market made from high quality aluminium) – you can have yourself a lightweight winch combo under 40kgs. Carbon Off Road says it has a range to suit Toyotas, Fords, Mitsubishis, Volkswagens and Isuzus with more to come depending on industry demand. PAT EXPANDS EMISSION SENSOR RANGE The growing selection now covers more than 658 vehicle applications To keep up with the increasingly strict Euro 5 emissions regulations, where Diesel vehicles are required to meet a particle number limit, a developing variety of vehicle management sensors are becoming increasingly popular in modern vehicles. The Euro 6 standard, already in place in Europe and the USA and on its way to Australia, imposes even tighter limits on oxides of nitrogen for Diesel vehicles and requires Direct Injection Petrol vehicles to meet a particle number limit as well, creating even more demand for these specialised sensors. To satisfy this growing market demand Premier Auto Trade says it has announced the expansion of its Sensors range. Currently for Diesel powered vehicles to meet these Emission Standards, they are generally fitted with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Monitoring the levels of restriction in the DPF required by the in-use monitoring (OBD) can be provided by evaluating the pressure difference across the filter by the Exhaust Pressure Sensor (EPS), to ensure the efficiency of a DPF through a regeneration process. Exhaust Pressure Sensors in modern diesel vehicles monitor the exhaust gas pressure either side of the particulate filter, between the intake and exit of the DPF, and allow the emission control system to ascertain whether a DPF regeneration is required. Premier Auto Trade says its growing selection of Exhaust Pressure Sensors now covers more than 658 vehicle applications for over a million vehicles on road. With the continuing tightening of emission regulations, a more direct measurement of particulate matter is required that provides

sufficient accuracy and sensitivity with stable long-life operation, whilst dealing with extreme exhaust gas conditions. The Particulate Matter Sensor (PMS) is used for this application. The Particulate Matter Sensor can assist in the estimation of the amount of soot accumulation in the DPF for a more accurate DPF regeneration, and DPF failure detection to log an OBD fault signal. The Particulate Matter Sensor is generally installed downstream of the DPF and combined with an adapted Sensor Control Unit (SCU). The Premier Auto Trade Sensor range now includes Particulate Matter Sensors (PMS) covering almost 75,000 vehicle applications in Australia and NZ. Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensors (EGT) are also used in modern vehicles, both Petrol and Diesel, because they protect components that are in the flow of hot exhaust gas from critical overheating. These sensors measure temperatures up to 900 degrees Celsius in the exhaust system of the vehicle. The sensing element of an Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor changes in resistance with temperature allowing the engine computer to calculate the temperature. Depending on the vehicle, multiple Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensors are often used for monitoring accuracy. The computer uses this information to control a variety of processes. These include particulate filter regeneration, selective catalytic reduction, exhaust gas

recirculation, turbo boost and overall engine combustion, to effectively reduce emissions and to protect components from overheating. In this event the ECU responds with suitable measures to reduce the temperature, through reduced performance like the limp home function. Depending on the location of the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor the computer uses the information to control a variety of processes. These include particulate filter regeneration, selective catalytic reduction, exhaust gas recirculation, turbo boost and overall engine combustion, to effectively reduce emissions and to protect components from overheating. In this event the ECU responds with suitable measures to reduce the temperature, through reduced performance like the limp home function. Premier Auto Trade has increased the number of Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensors available to over 100 parts, covering almost 700 vehicle applications for over 1.5 million vehicles on road. Premier Auto Trade says its sensors range is sourced from the world’s leading manufacturers and delivers OE form, fit and function, with all products now listed in the OSCAR electronic aftermarket parts catalogue system from AutoInfo. The full range of Premier Auto Trade products are now available in the aftermarket via a network of specialised resellers and leading automotive groups. REPLACEMENT FLOORINGS Tru-Fit Carpets knows a thing or two about what you expect for your restoration Tru-Fit Carpets has been manufacturing aftermarket moulded replacement floorings for vehicles since the 1970s. It says its team of long-time car enthusiasts have been perfecting the process of creating press moulds to manufacture replacement floorings as well as other insulations products. At the same time, Tru-Fit Carpets says its tooling department are experts in taking the pattern/ moulds from the actual vehicle’s floor pan, not the factory carpet flooring.

“Living in Australia, we’re a hard-working country that are used to a vast array of harsh conditions and terrains,” Tru-Fit Carpets Managing Director, Neville Ploeg, said. “To help cope with this, Aussies are opting for our replacement Vinyl Floorings to replace their carpet original flooring. “Whether you’re jumping into your Ute with your steel-cap work boots or driving off to that 4WD trip down Fraser Island, you know you’re protected with a hardwearing floor under foot.” Tru-Fit Carpets says it is dedicated to manufacturing long lasting, custom moulded Vinyl Floorings for a large range of vehicles. “Carrying a five-year wear through warranty, our Vinyl Floorings will handle anything you throw at it,” Neville said. Available for most vehicles, including most Sedans, Wagons, Utes and SUVs, and a select truck model range, custom flooring can be selected in your choice of either Black, Grey or Brown in colour.

“Our Vinyl Floorings are not an exact replica of the factory supplied flooring. What they are is a durable, heat-pressed Flooring moulded to each vehicle’s individual floor pan shape,” Neville said. “They do require some installation trimming and hole cutting. This is beneficial for vehicles that have had modifications, or different thicknesses in underlay. “If you are looking for a flooring option that will give you peace of mind from mud, dirt, water, spills entering your vehicle, our Vinyl Flooring is the way to go! “Going on a 4WD trip with mates this weekend through some river crossings? No worries! Our Vinyl Flooring has got you covered.” For more information, visit www.trufitcarpets.com.au Australian Automotive Aftermarket Magazine August 2020

REPLACE HEAT WITH HORSEPOWER Air cooler for 2011-2019 Ford Everest, Ranger PXI, PXII and Mazda BT50 3.2L, 2.2L Garrett Advancing Motion says it is excited to release the new Powermax direct fit performance charge air cooler for the Ford Ranger and Mazda BT50.

RPM REPAIRS ON FLEX 23 Titan GT1 Flex 23 SAE 5W-30 is Fuchs’ premium engine oil for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles The global car parc has seen a great deal of change in recent years with an acceleration of oil specifications driven by OEM vehicle manufacturers requiring higher levels of performance. Fuchs explains its engine oil solution to this requirement is simple: stock and use Titan GT1 Flex 23 SAE 5W-30. With its combination of ACEA C2 and C3 and corresponding approvals, Fuchs says its Titan GT1 Flex 23 SAE 5W-30 is a premium engine oil for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles which offers a wide range of harmonisation opportunities across several European and Asian manufacturers.

Garrett Advancing Motion says it boasts a 218 percent larger core, which helps reduce intake manifold temperatures by an average of 32°C based on test data. Optimised end tanks improve air flow through the core and Garrettt Advancing Motion says this direct fit performance intercooler installs in 2.0 hours and reuses the stock bolts, hoses, and clamps. Due to the modern ECU torque controlled modern turbo diesel engines, you will not gain power and torque by fitting an intercooler on a dyno without a ECU remap to take advantages of the cooler air inlet temperatures, says the company. It says where you will gain power with the standard ECU settings is when the turbo is under load four wheel driving or towing with a compressor outlet air temperature at 135oC. It says the Garrett Powermax Intercooler comes into a world of its own, lowering the inlet temperatures further by an average of 30oC to OE, giving the driver the constant power band right through their driving experience. Key features: • • • • • •

Titan GT1 Flex 23 SAE 5W-30 is also suitable for vehicles running on petrol, diesel or gas (LPG, CNG) and also in combination with up-to-date exhaust gas after treatment systems. Fuchs says it can also allow for more than double the fuel reduction compared to conventional ACEA C3products of the same SAE-class. Ray Peruzzi has been using this product in his regional NSW business, RPM Repairs, which services all kinds of light vehicles from vintage to current cars as well as commercial and many makes of European vehicles. Before stocking Fuchs’ Titan GT1 Flex 23 SAE 5W-30, Ray says RPM Repairs would have had to stock up multiple different types of engine oils in order to cover all the vehicles being serviced by his business. “Titan GT1 Flex 23 SAE 5W-30 has been a revelation as it has reduced us stocking at least four or five engine oils,” Ray said. “We now have three 205 litre drums of engine oils which cover most of the vehicles being serviced and a couple of 20 litre drums of different oils. This has made a big difference to our stock value and profit.

“In particular, this saves us time and money because our three drums are pumped straight into digital measuring guns at the hoists.” According to Fuchs, Titan GT1 Flex 23 SAE 5W-30 is miscible and compatible with conventional branded engine oils. However, Fuchs says mixing with other engine oils should be avoided to fully utilise the product’s benefits. Along with its strong list of Approvals and Recommendations, Titan Flex 23 SAE 5W-30 is available in a variety of key pack sizes, including 5L bottles and 205L drums.

BENDIX 4WD BRAKE UPGRADE KIT Providing increased safety Bendix says that whilst the original braking system on a new 4WD vehicle is more than adequate, it can be a very different story once the vehicle is decked out with a wide range of accessories as the weight of the vehicle overall can be dramatically increased. “Consider the weight of accessories such as a canopy, storage draws, a winch, bullbar, driving lights, a fridge, second spare wheel, larger fuel tank, second battery, roof rack etc, and it is easy to see why the braking system is under greatly increased pressure and safety becomes a real issue,” Bendix Product Manager, Ian Campbell, said. “Then there is an additional factor of the weight of a heavy caravan or outback trailer behind to consider.”

Brake Pads with specially compounded highperformance ceramic material brake pads for increased stopping power plus the latest Bendix Ultimate Rotors. Bendix says the new rotors are manufactured to the highest level of precision engineering based on OEM specifications and incorporate innovative technology such as high carbon metallurgy for increased braking performance plus special diamond tip slots and a special bi-directional pillar design to quickly and efficiently expel gases, water, dust and grit, providing absolute control with instant response and even friction.

Bendix says it has addressed this with its “hugely successful” Ultimate 4WD Brake Upgrade Kit which is providing drivers with improved stopping power in the most demanding emergency situations and general peace of mind with greatly reduced stopping distances overall.

Ultimate 4WD brake pads are manufactured from an advanced ceramic compound with the benefit of low dust and reduced noise whilst providing high temperature stability and excellent fade resistance. AUSTRALIAN MADE DIESEL FUEL CONDITIONER Created by Responsive Engineering Modern Common Rail Diesels do not fare so well sitting around – if there is the slightest bit of moisture in the fuel system, you might have a huge repair bill when you next start up.

diesel systems and formulated for low-sulphur diesel fuel and the product also includes an anti-bacterial biocide but does not contain hygroscopic dispersants.

Responsive Engineering says there is a cheap and simple way to protect your fuel system from moisture and other fuel contaminants. The company says its all Australian fuel additive, Responsive Diesel Fuel Lubricant and Conditioner, can provide protection to your Common Rail Diesel fuel system components and improve the vehicle’s performance and fuel economy.

Some fuel additives contain water-attracting/ retaining dispersants or detergents. These additives claim that they remove water, but in fact the water does not magically disappear, it just becomes emulsified with the fuel and is held in suspension causing the same damage as free water.

Responsive Diesel Fuel Lubricant and Conditioner was developed and manufactured by Diesel Engineer David Webster and his friend, a Queensland chemist, to lubricate all surfaces throughout the diesel fuel system while also providing anti-corrosion protection for diesel fuel pumps and injectors using nanotechnology developed in Europe, allowing the company to create a highly concentrated formula. It has been developed for modern common-rail

The company explains it has added a warning on the label “Do not over treat the fuel”. The Responsive team advises that the formula is very concentrated, so it recommends to only use this fuel additive every second time you refill your tank. It says this makes this product particularly economical. Responsive Engineering explains that the fill ratio is 10ml for every 80 litres of diesel, which means that a 150ml bottle is enough for 15 standard tank fills. Using it every second tank, one bottle of Responsive Diesel Fuel Lubricant

and Conditioner will treat 2,400 litres of fuel, or about 20,000km. At $39.50 for a 150ml bottle, that’s value for money in anyone’s language, says Responsive Engineering. A DPF sensor (Differential Pressure Sensor) is a crucial part of the vehicle’s exhaust system. In most cases if a DPF sensor stops working, a warning light on the dashboard will illuminate and log a diagnostic fault code. The DPF Sensors function is to measure the pressure difference of the exhaust gas before and after the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) or in comparison with the external atmospheric pressure. Another function of the DPF sensor is to monitor the soot loading of a Particulate Filter on a diesel engine. The filtering of exhaust gas is essential not just for the vehicle, but most importantly, for the environment. By filtering the diesel particulates that your car emits, it helps to reduce the black smoke that often comes from the exhaust of older diesel cars or vehicles which have a broken or faulty DPF sensor. A failing DPF sensor can lead to:

• Loss of power • Poor fuel economy • Hard to start or failure to start • A vehicle going into limp mode • Poor throttle response Goss offers an extensive range of DPF sensors to suit many popular makes and models including Audi, BMW, Ford, Holden, Mazda, Mercedes Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Peugeot, Renault, Subaru, Suzuki, Volkswagen and Volvo. For full vehicle details, Goss says you should refer to its online catalogues. Goss says its DPF sensors are backed by a 12month warranty and are sourced from global OEM suppliers, offering a true genuine alternative. For more information, visit www.goss.com.au

FRECIOUSPLUS Protect yourself and your loved ones against allergens, moulds and particulate matters More and more people suffer from allergens, which is said to be the fourth most chronic illness in the world with allergies able to cause serious allergic reactions and asthma attacks. In-car air pollution may be the cause of your allergic reactions, asthma attacks and headaches if your cabin air filters are not doing their job. Almost 540,000 liters per hour of polluted air flows through the car aircon system, and depending on where you are driving, you and your passengers could be exposed to almost five times more exhaust gasses, pollutants and allergens than when standing and breathing the air by the roadside. Cabin filters ensure that drivers and passengers breathe in as few pollutants as possible from the outside air. Conventional cabin filters prevent particles such as dust, pollen and diesel soot from making their way into the car via the ventilation system. MANN-FILTER says the good news is that its FreciousPlus cabin air filters not only remove harmful gasses and block particles, but also

absorb allergens and prevent the spread of bacteria and mould in the cabin. The three-layer FreciousPlus cabin air filters have a particle filter layer which MANN-FILTER says removes up to 100 percent of particulate matters (PM2.5). The premium activated carbon layer is the second layer that blocks unpleasant odors, and the third layer is the innovative bio-functional layer which is antiallergenic and antimicrobial. Allergens can be released from bursting pollens which make their way into the interior of vehicles through the ventilation ducts. The bio-functional layer of FreciousPlus is coated with an innovative polyphenol coating where Polyphenols, commonly found in natural products such as green tea and pomegranates, have antiinflammatory properties that absorb allergens and render them harmless. The additional antimicrobial coating prevents allergenic and sometimes malodorous bacteria and moulds from multiplying, by blocking the source of nutrition of the allergens, bacteria and fungi found in the air that flows through the aircon system.

So, if you are one of those who often drive long distances, suffer from allergies or asthma, and if you often have children and older persons or pregnant passengers travelling with you, you should check or have your cabin air filters checked now. MANN-FILTER says you should change your cabin air filters if they are dirty for optimum filtration and maximum protection and states you should not go for just any cabin air filters, inviting you to instead upgrade yours to MANNFILTER FreciousPlus to “protect yourselves and your loved ones. For more product details, visit www.frecious-plus.com or www.mann-filter.com

PUTTING THE ULTRA IN UUHP TYRES Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport R and RS During 2019 Goodyear successfully launched the Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport into the Ultra High Performance (UHP) tyre category. Now Goodyear says it is proud to announce the latest additions to the ‘Ultra Ultra High Performance’ (UUHP) tyre category. The Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport R caters to both road and track applications, while the Eagle F1 SuperSport RS is Goodyear’s most racefocused tyre, designed to push the limits on track while remaining road legal. The Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport R is designed to allow the driver to have the best of both worlds: drive on the road in complete safety and confidence then entice the maximum grip at the track. This new entry to the UUHP category relies on extensive superior R&D where Goodyear says we now see the following advances in tyre compounding and construction the competition is scrambling to copy: • Bridge Assist technology that sees a rubber bridge in the first groove to increase block

stability while creating improved resistance to tread-bending at high speed, ensuring extended cornering stability. • Impulse Plus Construction technology optimising the tyre’s contour for improved pressure distribution which insures the ultimate steering precision. • Powerline Cover technology which incorporates a tread deformation protector for the high speeds seen with UUHP vehicles. • Advanced Control Compound technology developed using improved resins resulting in a better friction rate therefore delivering exceptional grip. While the Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport R is designed to allow everyday driving, it is a different story with the Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport RS. Goodyear says “this is the tyre embarrassing the competition, taking seconds off lap times, placing it at the very pointy end of overall performance, grip and handling. With rave reviews no matter where it is run, the SuperSport RS resets the bar and then some.”

Incorporating many of the same features as the Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport R with Bridge Assist and Powerline Cover technologies, the Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport RS goes more than one step further with its RacePro Compound. While the two former technologies extend the cornering stability primarily at high speeds, by utilising RacePro Compound technology Goodyear says it has developed a UUHP tyre with massive improvements in grip on both cold and hot surfaces, creating “hyper-grip” on what is seen as the ultimate street legal tyre for track use. Goodyear says both the Eagle F1 SuperSport R and RS tyres put the company “firmly back where it belongs: leading the performance tyre pack.” For more information, visit www.goodyear.com.au

SCANGRIP WORK LIGHTS From Hella Australia Using work lights with energy-saving LEDs compared to traditional fluorescent and halogen work lights have a significant impact on power consumption. In fact, Hella Australia, the exclusive distributor of Scangrip products in the Oceania region says halogen lamps use six times as much power as Scangrip LED products, while fluorescent lamps use twice as much power*. Hella Australia says Scangrip uses the latest LED technology to ensure the highest energy efficiency possible. Whether you compare energy efficiency with traditional technologies or other LED products, Hella Australia says you can save energy by choosing a Scangrip work light and moving towards a greener work environment. “Scangrip is dedicated to the design and feel of its

products and is determined to develop high-quality work lights that are extremely durable and made to do the job again and again,” Scangrip Product Manager, Jigar Patel, said. “Every detail, from the smallest and invisible to the naked eye components inside the work lights to the exterior design, is carefully thought out to ensure the highest possible quality across all product lines. “Scangrip’s LED products, for instance, are highly efficient, properly dimensioned and constructed by high-quality components, and so are the batteries. “Every Scangrip work light is manufactured at our own factories and subject to strict quality controls. Our lights meet the highest quality standards and are built to last and all Scangrip work lights come with a three-year warranty because we stand by our products.” Hella Australia says choosing a Scangrip work light is a choice in a greener direction where energy is saved on an everyday basis through low power consumption. “It is also a choice that puts a stop to the buy-andthrow away mentality, which has been dominant in many industries for a long time,” Jigar said. “Besides energy-saving LEDs and high durability, a number of Scangrip work lights also feature unique

functionalities that can help reduce unnecessary energy consumption in the everyday use. “The stepless dimmer function enables you to adjust the light output to just the amount of light necessary to do the job without compromising the maximum performance when needed. “By using APP control, you can also easily adjust the light output on work lights positioned out of reach via your smartphone, for example on a tripod, and turn off the lights when leaving the work site.” For more information or to find the nearest stockist, please contact Hella Australia’s Customer Service team on 1800 061 729 or email custservice@hella.com *These figures are based on the actual power consumption with typical losses taken into account and are average considerations.

NEW V2 TOWSAFE PORTABLE WHEEL LOAD SCALES From Intertrade Intertrade says its new V2 Towsafe Portable Wheel Lad Scales allow you to have your own “portable weighbridge” to ensure all towing weights are within specified limits. “Gone are the days when you had to travel miles and fork out hard earned money at a weighbridge or use a bathroom scale, planks of wood and bricks to ensure your maximum towing weights were not exceeded,” Intertrade Owner, Steven Nicholson, said. “Now there is a product that is affordable, easy to use, portable and can accurately weigh your towing vehicle and also your towed vehicle.” Intertrade says it was the first to develop a DIY Tow Ball Weight Scale suitable for the Australian market back in 2013. This product was marketed under the Towsafe brand. “We saw the opportunity to develop a low cost weighing scale that could not only weigh the Tow Ball weight, but also the ATM (aggregate trailer mass) of a fully loaded caravan,” Steven said. “After a further two years of R and D, we finally introduced our first low cost portable platform weighing scale. These scales were highly sought after. During the past 12 months we have been developing and testing our new v2 model which has just arrived. “This v2 model comes with front and rear ramps, a longer LCD display time to give you more time to take the measurements and also has four times more load cells which gives improved accuracy. Full scale the accuracy is at 0.5 percent which is attainable when used on a level, flat surface. The Towsafe platform scale uses the Static (Drive onto) weighing principle which has a far greater accuracy than other Dynamic (Drive over) scales on the market.” A two-direction spirit level to assist in ensuring your weighing site is level is included with the scales, which have been tested to conform to the Australian and International standard ISO/IEC 17025:2005. The scale is constructed from aluminium and stainless steel, with an LCD back lit readout. The aluminium platform measures 305mm x 305mm and has a capacity of 1500kg per wheel, allowing you to weigh a single axle van up to 3000kg, or a twin axle van up to 6000kg. With the platform height being only 19mm, even though the scales are low profile it is suggested to use levelling pads to achieve maximum accuracy. To use, switch the scale on and drive the van or vehicle onto the platform. The reading from each wheel is then added together, giving you the vehicle or van’s GTM. To obtain a van’s ATM, simply rest the jockey wheel on the scale and add this reading to the GTM total. This Scale can also be used in the vehicle racing industry to set up the car’s suspension and also for weighing vehicles after a GVM upgrade. MEMBER FEATURE

WALKING THE LINE

Anyone who has had the opportunity to spend time in the company of RPM Automotive Group Ltd Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Clive Finkelstein, will agree his drive and passion for the automotive industry knows no bounds While Clive is responsible for steering the direction of several automotive manufacturing, importing and distribution businesses – including Revolution Racegear, Spider GT, Formula Offroad, Air Anywhere plus Genie and Wildcat Headers – his focus on the growth and evolution of Carline is laser-sharp.

“A substantial number of our current Carline members have been with the group since the early 90s.

Carline has its origins in the USA as part of Tenneco Automotive. Following its success in the States, Carline was launched in Australia in the early 1990s. Over the last 30+ years, those behind Carline say it has endured and grown, cementing its position as one of the bestestablished and most well-respected brands in automotive repairs and maintenance.

Initially, Carline built their reputation as exhaust and muffler replacement, upgrade and repair experts, and the group was initially known by the Carline Mufflers moniker. But as policymakers moved to reduce environmental impacts, Carline focused on emissions reduction and compliance.

“Many consider Carline the largest retail group of performance, emissions, and accessories in Australia,” Clive said. “And it’s hard to argue with that. There are more than 120 Carline service centres spread across Australia, all manned by highly skilled technicians committed to exceeding our customers’ expectations.”

“To their credit, they have adapted, upskilled, and changed the way they behave as cars have just become more complicated to repair and service.”

“Emissions have become an enormous part of the automotive aftermarket in the States and Australia certainly followed suit, but not to the same degree,” said Clive. “And while we are considered amongst the most highly skilled practitioners in this area, we have continued to diversify.

As the rapid rate of change in the automotive servicing environment continues unabated, Clive and his team at Carline say they have stayed ahead of the curve to match the group’s offering with customer expectations.

“Now the lion’s share of our members also offer logbook servicing, supply, and fitment of towing products including tow bars and protection gear, bolt-on accessories, suspension, brakes, batteries, commercial and heavy-duty mufflers, radiators, wheels and tyres, in addition to vehicle modifications and tuning services,” Clive explained.

“Over the journey, Carline has successfully diversified its offering without losing its core competencies in an industry that is experiencing a skills shortage,” Clive explained.

It is certainly exciting to track the evolution of a traditional business like Carline and watch as they pivot and take a new trajectory to ensure they remain relevant and profitable.

As the number of diesel-powered vehicles in the Australian car parc has increased, dealing with the issues surrounding proper maintenance and repair of Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) has become a hot topic that Clive and his team identified as an opportunity for the group. “There so no doubt that consumers feel like they are in the dark when it comes to DPFs,” said Clive. “What tends to happen is that the public goes straight to the manufacturer when the DPF warning light illuminates on their dash and it ends up costing them a lot of money. “We are planning to engage with the team at the AAAA to roll-out a campaign debunking a number of the myths that surround DPFs. “Our goal is to educate motorists about their options when it comes to deciding between DPF repair and replacement, in addition to providing them with tips for DPF maintenance.” Carline says its members have the expertise and

MEMBER FEATURE “Right now, I see the complexity of Australia’s car parc as our biggest challenge,” Clive remarked. “Twenty years ago, Commodore, Falcon and Camry dominated new car sales, but in what is a relatively small market, Australia has what could potentially be the widest range of vehicles available for purchase of any market globally. “That makes it very difficult for workshops and repairers because souring the correct parts and understanding the differences between a French car and an American car and a car made in Thailand is a challenge. “We are lucky to have the AAAA on our side because the success of their choice of repairer campaign has provided our members with access to the data required to service and repair all makes and models that end up in our workshops.” Clive also flagged poor and short-sighted policymaking as an ongoing issue for all players in the automotive aftermarket. experience to accurately diagnose DPF faults and to program the oxygen sensors to avoid premature DPF failure.

with peace-of-mind, knowing that no matter how far from home they venture, there will always be a Carline service centre close at hand.”

Fleet work is also an essential part of Carline’s continued success. The group’s nationwide dealer network, national warranty, and pricing structure, combined with their commitment to repeatable technical expertise and exceptional customer service, make them popular with companies running larger fleet operations.

Of course, this national footprint loses its value quickly if motorists have trouble identifying their closest store, and this is where Carline’s continued investment in brand recognition has built equity for its members.

“Our National infrastructure is such an important part of Carline’s success. Our ability to offer the same quality service, the same-priced service, and a national warranty is a big advantage that will come into focus even more due to the COVID19 pandemic,” Clive said. “We believe that domestic travel will grow exponentially over the next five years, as we all know international travel has been put on hold for the foreseeable future. “Our national dealer network provides customers

“There are several ingredients that, when combined, have helped secure the long-term success of the group,” said Clive. “You need committed, highly skilled people, quality products, and a memorable brand. One that stands above all others, and I think the Carline brand has endured over 30 something years because it has become a household name in the automotive industry.” Of course, navigating the path forward is never without its challenges, and Clive has identified two significant obstacles facing not only Carline but the entire automotive aftermarket.

“I consider the AAAA as our industry watchdog. Stuart and his highly skilled team are our first line of defence against major industry changes brought about by political manipulation,” Clive explained. “The AAAA has positioned itself to effectively collective bargain with legislators and standards initiators to ensure the correct and accurate information is being acted upon and to try and ensure that the correct decisions are made that are not only in the public’s best interest but in the automotive industry’s as well.” Clive provided an example of the successful lobbying that the AAAA has undertaken regarding suspension modifications and upgrades, which represent an essential part of Carline’s business. “Recently there was a concern about the effects aftermarket suspension upgrades have on a vehicle’s performance and safety,” said Clive “Many policymakers were of the view that suspension modifications, of the type which we often complete, reduced the capability of the vehicle. “The AAAA led a charge, assisted by a lot of us in the industry, and in a combined effort, we were able to prove that suspension upgrades, specifically in four-wheel drives, actually improved handling and safety, which was a massive win for the aftermarket. “Without the ongoing support that the AAAA provides, there is no doubt that the challenges facing the automotive aftermarket would be almost insurmountable. “In challenging times like those we face as a result of the current pandemic, the AAAA comes into its own providing invaluable support and resources that make a measurable difference.” To find out more about The Carline Automotive Group, visit www.carline.com.au Australian Automotive Aftermarket Magazine August 2020

DESIGNED TO SUIT COMPLETE SUSPENSION SOLUTIONS 4 Way Suspension Products is proud to THE NEED offer “one stop shopping” Roadsafe takes a look at vehicle ball joints Vehicle ball joints are not all the same. Some are load carrying tension joints where the main force is applied in tension, some are locating, and some are load carrying compression where the joints suffer the majority of the forces in compression. Some then are made in a mechanical (hard to hard) style and some are an encapsulated design. For each ball joint application and vehicle suspension design, a particular type of manufacture is required.

Some aftermarket manufacturers employ a ‘one size fits all’ rule but Roadsafe says it examines carefully the loads and forces applied for each ball joint to ensure the best type and style of manufacture is utilised. Hard to hard ball joints are effectively a metal to metal design relying on grease as a lubricant between the hardened surface of the ball stud and the housing. These also usually have some type of spring in them so are often erroneously condemned for having vertical movement, says Roadsafe. It explains that in this style ball joint, depending on manufacture style, a small amount of vertical movement in an unloaded condition is acceptable. There should be no discernible movement in an encapsulated design ball joint. Then there are tie rod ends where again one size does not fit all. Road going cars need quiet, maintenance free tie rod ends with good side load strength, so encapsulated is the best here, says Roadsafe. 4WD tie rod ends however have additional loads and sometimes impact loads so an extended wall greasable tie rod end is best for 4WD applications. Roadsafe says it continually strives to deliver the best quality product at an affordable price in addition to manufacturing in a style that best suits the vehicle needs. The decision to modify and upgrade a motor vehicle is a significant financial commitment for many buyers. Securing that custom for your Automotive business is a careful mix of having the right products and offering genuine advice to today’s switched on and educated customer. Retaining those hard-won customers long term though, relies on your business having recommended products that are reliable, and work consistently. Saved costs in warranty support as well as increased revenue through referrals is the name of the game here. 4 Way Suspension Products, the manufacturer of the Tough Dog Range, says its mission in the off-road suspension sector is to provide just that. “Our complete range of products comes with a three-year unlimited kilometre warranty which means you can have peace of mind that what you’re selling will go the distance,” 4 Way Suspension Products Sales Manager, David Cook, said. “The complete range of suspension offered by Tough Dog covers an almost unparalleled range of model selection, and a depth in product variety that means there is an option for every customer – no matter how they use their 4WD.” Modern vehicles require specific solutions to be developed, meaning more time and energy committed to R&D in order to maintain the high level of quality that users expect from the brand. In 2018 Tough Dog built a new, purpose-built facility in Marsden Park, featuring nearly 200 square metres of dedicated R&D Space. “2020 has seen the introduction of the new Upper Control arm range for modern IFS vehicles, complementing the extensive existing range and perfecting handling characteristics as well as maximising tyre life through accurate wheel alignment capability,” David said.

“Tough Dog has also introduced its range of Air Assist bellows style and coil insert style airbags, to level out vehicles with widely varying loads or heavy towing demands. “With the new GVM upgrade program, Tough Dog’s ever-increasing range of covered vehicles means customers who need to have an option to carry more in their 4WD can do so safely and legally. “As a Federally certified second stage manufacturer, you can be confident that engineer certification on post registration applications will not be hampered by the suspension system. “All of this is backed up by Tough Dog’s signature Foam Cell and Foam Cell Adjustable shock absorber technology, which has been recognised as an award-winning all-round performer in comparison with its peers.” 4 Way Suspension says it is always looking for quality reseller partners and invites you to get in contact with its sales team if you are looking for a “one stop” 4WD suspension supplier for your business. TRANSGOLD RUBBER SUSPENSION KITS Transgold has 2000 rubber suspension kits for 31 major brands Transgold says that according to current estimates on the world’s car park, rubber suspension can be found as original equipment on around 1.4 billion cars, around 350 million of which are commercial vehicles. It says this means that there are over a billion passenger vehicles utilising rubber suspension as original equipment and states that ‘Live Counter’ states the world’s manufacturers are adding to that total by 3.1 automobiles per second, and that number will rise significantly through the next decades. In Australia, the ABS put the number of registered motor vehicles at 19.8 million back on 31 January 2020. Transgold says that even with the current COVID-19 crisis slowing down imports it looks like we will soon top the 20 million mark. Transgold states rubber suspension has long been the preferred choice of car designers and automotive engineers all over the world and that it is original equipment on virtually every model. It all goes back to Chrysler’s first chief engineer,

Frederick Zeder, a legendary figure in the auto industry. Among several innovations – including curved windshields, hydraulic brakes, air filters and oil filters – Transgold explains Frederick is credited by fellow industry legend Lee Iacocca as the first to mount engines on a rubber base in an effort to absorb vibration. From that point on, all the leading vehicle producers throughout the world have reportedly specified rubber suspension. Transgold says three key factors have shaped their choice: • Firstly, they like to make sure it is quiet in the cabin. Rubber suspensions dampen the road noise which is pretty important in our busy lives as we make the most of our in-car entertainment and communication options. • Secondly, it maintains the feel of the drive

that owners have come to know and love and in many cases paid quite a bit for. • Thirdly, for the reason it was originally invented: to eliminate vibrations so drivers can enjoy a ride that is both smooth and responsive. Transgold explains it has now hit the milestone of 2000 rubber suspension kits for 31 major brands from Audi to VW, covering 85 percent of the models on Australian roads. Easy to fit and with no need to grease, Transgold says its bushes come in kits to make the mechanic’s life easy – one kit per car. All of the kits are said to be manufactured to a high quality OEM standard and are backed by the standard Transgold 12-month, 20,000km warranty. As a development partner of leading automotive manufacturers, Schaeffler says it works to develop technical innovations that keep vehicles safe on the road and help to improve fuel consumption and reduce exhaust emissions. The chassis is constantly subjected to strong dynamic forces and different road conditions. Other factors also influence the chassis like ozone, dirt, water, salt, and gravel which can accelerate the wear of parts and reduce their durability. For these reasons, Schaeffler says it considers the whole chassis system during product development, focusing on quality in both the design and production of components. Whether individual components or complete repair solutions, Schaeffler says FAG products deliver high quality and performance necessary for steering parts, driveshaft components, vehicle damping and wheel bearings to improve driving safety and driving dynamics.

Schaeffler states FAG offers a wide range of chassis products made with the latest materials and with market leading manufacturing technology. Modern sealing concepts and coating processes protect components from corrosion increasing their performance, durability and efficiency.

High-quality chassis components and repair solutions The FAG range also includes steering and suspension parts, drive shafts and strut mountings for chassis repairs. Products include control arms, tie rods, stabilisers, supporting and guide joints, and axial joint kits. Every part is developed, tested and approved by Schaeffler engineers in line with Schaeffler quality standards. To ensure driving safety, chassis repairs must be carried out correctly with high quality parts. To make repair work easier and to save time for mechanics in sourcing and ordering quality parts, FAG repair solutions contain all the necessary components as well as all required accessories, such as nuts and bolts – all in the same Schaeffler quality. Repair solutions also include any information required about special tools that may be needed for the specific repair work.

SUPERPRO POLY BUSHINGS SuperPro says it is one of the largest polyurethane bushing manufacturers in the world SuperPro says choosing the right polyurethane bushing brand is key as although poly bushings are reportedly perceived as superior over rubber bushings, it says each brand is different. SuperPro explains its poly bushings are specifically designed for each application and include proprietary design and material features, unique only to SuperPro. According to SuperPro, no polyurethane bushing is made equally and all of the normal design flaws generalised and associated with poly bushings are non-existent in SuperPro bushings.

Polyurethane Bushing Overview Poly bushings are the relatively new kid on the block in comparison to the broader history of the automotive aftermarket industry. Traditionally polyurethane has been associated with being a hard material, giving excessive NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness). SuperPro says that while the cost of buying some brands of poly bushes may be significantly more than an OEM rubber bush, if designed correctly

64

for its application they can save you money in the long run with a long service life and performance that doesn’t degrade over time. According to SuperPro there are very few poly bushing manufacturers that create a decent bushing using material, engineering and manufacturing to create the perfect suspension bushing. That is why it says it is so important you find a suspension manufacturer that knows what they are doing.

Ride Quality SuperPro says its poly bushings offer a firm ride, yet still supply a comfortable driving experience through a responsive drive. Due to SuperPro bushing design features, the company says there will be no increased noise, vibration or harshness (NVH). As such, it says if you’re looking for better driving performance, direct steering, long service life, sharper and more responsive handling, then SuperPro poly bushings are the best solution.

goes into a polyurethane bushing, especially a SuperPro poly bushing, due to the complexity of material and also manufacturing process behind a SuperPro Poly bushing. The material design has to be perfect in order to supply a bushing which will perform in all conditions and SuperPro bushes are reportedly designed to fit an exact parameter of housing dimensions.

Engineering and Manufacturing

SuperPro poly bushes are designed and manufactured in Australia and SuperPro says it basically takes an OE bushing and analyses it completely to see what it can do to make it the best possible suspension bushing. This includes adding design features for fitment, long service life and correct alignment issues not addressed by rubber bushings.

SuperPro says a lot of time, effort and thinking

MILD TO WILD RAW 4x4 tackles Australia’s harshest conditions head on Powerdown says its RAW 4x4 brand understands Australia’s terrain is some of the most diverse and demanding in the world. Having built a long standing reputation for excellence in performance, safety and value within the demanding heavy commercial vehicle industry over 37 years, Powerdown says its RAW 4x4 suspension range follows the same design principles that are applied to Powerdown ride control components. The RAW 4x4 engineers, based in Beresfield, New South Wales, are dedicated to researching and developing shock absorbers and suspension components; using some of the most advanced testing facilities in Australia; including one of the largest dynamometers in the country to accurately measure the dampening capabilities of a shock absorber. This performance and durability testing is followed by tests performed on Australia’s diversified road and climatic conditions; all carried out to achieve optimum comfort and control. Powerdown says RAW 4x4 doesn’t stand for a

“one size fits all” approach. Instead, recognising that every 4WDriver has a unique purpose for their vehicle, RAW reportedly offers tailor made solutions in addition to its standard product range, with three different levels of design.

Heavy Duty Range: RAW Nitro A gas shock absorber that will improve ride quality through reducing body roll and increasing vehicle stability; it combines an expanded body for extra oil capacity and nitrogen gas for additional cooling purposes. Recommended for the recreational 4WDriver looking to lift their vehicle and improve overall suspension performance.

Extra Heavy Duty Range: RAW Nitro Max Specifically designed for heavy coil sprung and torsion bar vehicles, the Nitro Max uses a proven truck shock absorber design with highly tuned valving for 4x4 applications; and carrying heavy loads on demanding terrain. Best suited for vehicles used for long distance touring, stacked with a heavy load; and heavy duty applications such as utes on trade and mining sites.

Performance Range: RAW Predator A fast acting monotube design; bringing together an on-road prowess with an off-road durability. Designed to give consistent performance on and off road, its single wall construction makes the Predator the most efficient heat dissipating shock absorber design; resulting in sharper steering response, less body roll and improved traction. Designed specifically for 4x4 owners looking for that, sometimes elusive, combination of comfort and control. RAW 4x4 has an online kit builder specifically designed to ensure the correct combination of suspension components are chosen, based on the weight bearing accessories fitted to a vehicle; resulting in a tailored suspension solution. BORGESON STEERING COMPONENTS Available from Rocket Industries Borgeson says it is one of the industry’s most trusted sources for steering components with its products including single and double U-joints, vibration reducers and rag joints, steering shafts, support bearings, couplers and adapters, pin and block racing u-joints, column drops and floor mounts and power steering components.

Borgeson Needle Bearing U-Joints Needle bearing u-joints have the distinct advantage of lasting much longer than nonneedle bearing u-joints. Borgeson recommends only needle bearing u-joints for use on street vehicles, stating its u-joints are made of specially selected steel and stainless steel for strength and longevity. It says the sealed precision needle bearings never need maintenance and states its needle bearing joints have zero backlash (radial play) for more precise steering and a better feel for the road. Borgeson u-joints are machined on state-of-the-art CNC equipment from solid billet steel or stainless steel. Ongoing engineering and testing ensure the components meet or exceed current automotive production vehicle requirements. The company says any of its four Double D sizes, 14 different spline size yokes, and the ‘94 and later Mustang V style can be combined to mate components 66

Australian Automotive Aftermarket Magazine August 2020

from many different manufacturers. They operate at angles up to 35°. Similar to OEM u-joints, the staked needle bearing caps prevent loosening and adjustment malfunction.

Double needle bearing universal joints Angles over 35° can be negotiated by using a Borgeson double universal joint. These double universal joints can accommodate angles up to 70°. Double universal joints are available in steel, stainless steel and polished stainless steel. Borgeson double universal joints are available in all of its popular spline and DD configurations.

Vibration reducers Using urethane to isolate all of the metal components, Borgeson has developed vibration reducers to diminish annoying vibrations transmitted through the steering system. As an added benefit, the resulting reduction in vibration has been shown to increase the overall life of the steering components, including the steering column and box.

Splined and Double D Shafting Splined or double D steering shafts are a simple and safe method of attaching your steering components. Borgeson offers 3/4” double D shafts in steel and stainless steel. Splined shafts

are available in steel, stainless steel and polished stainless steel.

Telescoping Shaft Borgeson offers two telescoping shaft assemblies in 24” and 36” overall lengths. These shafts can be used in a variety of applications and make installation and removal of steering system components simple and easy. By pulling or pushing on the assembly, the overall length can be shortened or lengthened. This telescopic shaft also meets NHTSA guidelines for collapsibility in passenger cars and adds a measure of safety. BLACKHAWK4X4 UPPER CONTROL ARMS Available from Roadsafe – a division of Specialist Wholesalers Roadsafe 4WD Product Development Manager, Troy Schipper, says the trend in new vehicles has considerably moved towards 4WDs complete with Independent Front Suspension (IFS) for good road handling and car-like comfort. “When we start modifying and raising the factory suspension system for whatever reason, a large proportion of people don’t fully appreciate what happens to the kinematics of the front suspension and what effect this new-found superior look and height can have on tyre wear, steering effort and handling qualities; which in turn affects control of your vehicle,” Troy warns. “While all vehicles are supplied from their manufacturer with a wheel alignment specification, this is very generalised. The manufacturer’s intention is to simply keep the vehicle travelling down the road in what is hopefully a straight line. So, when suspension is raised on an IFS vehicle, it moves the scope of this adjustment.” Troy explains there are three key elements to consider in a wheel alignment: Camber; Caster and Toe.

“All three need to work together because if you take more from one, you have less of the other and changing suspension lift eats up some of the available settings,” Troy said. “The amount of adjustment available is quite minimal and needs to work in harmony. Depending on the vehicle’s design and suspension component limitations, you may not have enough adjustment in the factory components to perform an alignment to meet the factory specifications or better yet, exceed the factory specifications for superior handling, tyre wear and control.” Roadsafe says this is where an aftermarket product like Blackhawk4x4 Upper Control Arms can transform your vehicle. “Blackhawk4x4’s Upper Control Arms offer a variety of cost-effective features and benefits that are difficult to fully grasp until you have driven the transformation – a quality wheel alignment is also paramount if you want to unlock the full potential,” Troy said. “Blackhawk4x4 Upper Control Arms pick up the goal posts and move them, so the factory

adjustment is in the right range to offer the adjustment required for a range of suspension lift between 30-70mm. We also add an extra goal post by physically putting more caster into the Upper Control Arm and a small amount of Camber change is also made to bring this closer to a desired specification. This allows the factory adjusters to become fine-tuning tools, rather than bulk adjusters which they cannot do to the correct standard with raised suspension.” Blackhawk4x4’s Upper Control Arms feature genuine sized rubber bushings; genuine sized reengineered Heavy Duty greaseable ball joint with increased angle; rotated ball joint cup to follow large suspension travel; re-engineered profile to maximise clearances; and two stage coating with E-Coat then hi-gloss powder coat. They are also ADR Compliable for road use with all GVM upgrades. For more information, visit www.roadsafe.com.au

Bilstein says it is known for its high-quality shock absorbers and suspension solutions, supplying performance products for the aftermarket as well as series replacement parts in OE quality or better. As an original equipment manufacturer, the renowned German manufacturer has also been at the forefront of the development of new shock absorber technologies since the 1950s. In the future, the company says it is certain that suspension systems will continue to gain in intelligence, stating that some of the most modern systems are already reacting to the respective road conditions with foresight and in line with requirements. This enables the suspension to provide the optimum spring and damping force in advance. To do this, it is necessary to collect a wide range of information via sensors. Bilstein says its E-Active Body Control and DampTronic X reflect the latest developments for standard equipment. The first has recently been introduced in the Mercedes GLE. The ‘Road Surface Scan’ is said to be just one of several innovative features: the suspension reacts to bumps detected by a camera, controls the active suspension struts and largely compensates for unevenness when driving over them. Another highlight is the ‘Curve’ driving mode, in which the GLE actively tilts in three stages, similar to a motorcycle. DampTronic X, on the other hand, is used in the new Porsche 911 of the 992 series and enables what Bilstein calls an unbelievably large damping force spread. This has been increased by up to 40 percent compared to the predecessor in order to balance driving comfort and agility even better. The DampTronic X damper is also equipped with a very fast-switching adjustment valve that allows the required damping forces to be adjusted in milliseconds. The requirements are determined by a central control unit. In addition to active systems based on conventional gas pressure shock absorbers, air suspension systems are also relatively common today. Bilstein says the breakthrough came in the late 1990s with the Mercedes S-Class W220 series, with Bilstein’s involvement, while the new Land Rover Defender is a very recent application example. In this case, the suspension manufacturer supplies the semi-active DampTronic technology with air suspension module, which Bilstein says enables an unimagined range between off-road performance and road comfort. The electronic

damping force adjustment is performed by a setup that adjusts itself automatically and continuously to the respective requirements: with the aid of additional sensors, the driving situation and vehicle status are recorded in a central control unit. In general, however, active shock absorbers and air suspension systems are becoming increasingly common, even in older vehicles. A good example of this is the Mercedes E-Class S211 estate car with air-sprung rear axle, for which Bilstein has been supplying OE-quality replacement parts as standard for some time now. Due to its widespread use, it offers motor vehicle workshops a particularly high potential for repairs. As an option, the W211/S211 series was also available with AIRMATIC full air suspension. Bilstein therefore also offers B4 air suspension modules for the front axle. In contrast to many competitors, only brand-new components are reportedly used, so that functionality and quality are 100 percent at OE level. Bilstein warns that for reconditioned old parts however, used shock absorbers with uncertain mileage are often used, which can have a negative effect on the performance and durability of the entire unit. In some cases, some integrated functions are simply shut down: for example, the solenoid valves. A formerly active suspension thus becomes a passive one and this results in a significant quality defect that is not in keeping with Bilstein’s high standards and is therefore a no-go for the company, it says. STABILISER LINK REPLACEMENT WORKSHOP TIPS From LEMFÖRDER LEMFÖRDER says it is one of the world’s leading brands in steering and suspension technology in the automotive sector. Part of ZF’s global portfolio of premium brands, LEMFÖRDER products are fitted as original equipment and available to the aftermarket for passenger cars, light trucks and larger commercial vehicles. ZF’s experts have shared the following useful tips on diagnosing and replacing suspension stabiliser links. A broken stabiliser link can be recognised while driving by rattling and thumping noises on rough roads; imprecise vehicle handling; and heightened roll of the vehicle during cornering. If, upon inspection, the stabiliser link is found to be defective, ZF’s experts detail the following steps on how to replace it with a new unit: 1. Raise the vehicle and remove the front wheels. 2. Spray the fastening nuts of the stabiliser link with rust remover and let it penetrate for a few minutes. 3. Loosen the lower fastening nut of the stabiliser link at the stabiliser and remove. If the ball stud also starts to turn, hold it with a suitable tool. 4. Press the stabiliser link out of the torsion bar. 5. Loosen the upper fastening nut of the

stabiliser link at the suspension strut and remove it. If the ball stud also starts to turn, hold it with a suitable tool. 6. Press the stabiliser link at the suspension strut out of the bracket. 7. Insert new stabiliser link at the suspension strut. 8. Tighten the stabiliser link at the suspension strut to the tightening torque specified by the vehicle manufacturer. TIP: Secure the ball stud against twisting with a suitable tool. 9. Insert the new stabiliser link at the stabiliser. 10. Tighten the stabiliser link at the stabiliser to the tightening torque specified by the vehicle manufacturer. TIP: Secure the ball stud against twisting with a suitable tool. 11. Remount the front wheels. Lower the vehicle and tighten the wheel studs to the tightening torque specified by the vehicle manufacturer. TIP: Even if replacing the stabiliser link does not directly affect the chassis setting, LEMFÖRDER recommends checking the axle setting and adjusting if necessary, after working on the suspension. 12. Conclude with a test drive Before commencing the work, make sure to check both stabiliser links and replace them in pairs if necessary.

Recently Australian Automotive Parts (AAP) has been investing heavily in its front end components range. Its Selby range has expanded past 2,000 part numbers and now includes more than 400 part numbers in control arms alone. One of the first symptoms of a worn control arm is steering wheel vibrations leading to the steering wandering. Replacing worn ball joints or control arm bushes can be a timely and costly exercise. AAP says the Selby range of complete new control arms is the cost effective alternative. It explains the bushes in the Selby range of control arms are made of high quality bonded rubber and perform like original equipment. Soon to be included in the Selby steering program will be a range of Australian made polyurethane bushes to suit most makes and models of 4x4 vehicles.

“Ready availability and service is paramount to our overall offering,” Redranger Group Marketing Manager, Andrew Nolan, said. “Range and diversity of carpark means brands must offer a wider range of product available within hours to the trade. “This Preston location can offer that to the greater Melbourne aftermarket.” Redranger says the benefits of ‘Nolathane now’ include: • Bushings, links and control arms when you need it; • Melbourne and greater metro availability thanks to the Preston location; • More than 1,800 part numbers in stock; and • Same day metro delivery. IFS FROM SUPERFORMANCE Superformance says it builds premium high-end Independent Front Suspension solutions in-house Suspension is a critical safety component and the better the suspension, the better the ride for the occupants, says Superformance. The company says Independent Front Suspension, otherwise known as IFS, offers many key benefits over earlier front suspension designs. It explains that in older designs when one wheel hits a bump, it affects both wheels, compromising the quality of the ride and possibly causing traction loss which is exaggerated at higher speeds. As such, it is clear that vehicle stability is affected by design. With an Independent Front Suspension, each wheel moves independent of the other, which

Superformance says reduces the amount of traction loss and greatly improves the quality of the ride. An IFS typically has lower unsprung weight than earlier designs and Superformance says a quality IFS unit like the ones it offers requires considerable research and development of the engineering mechanisms at play in the movement of suspension. Caster, Camber and Anti Dive are all factored in at the time of manufacture, it explains, stating that simple adjustment with premium shim adjustable control arm shafts means any competent Wheel Align shop understands how to set them up. Indeed, Superformance says the alignment industry has spoken at length about what is available, and its team has listened. Superformance has in-house built IFS systems for the Holden Torana 1974-1980 range LH, LX, UC; Ford Pickup 1948-1952; Ford F100 1953-1956; Ford F100 1973-1979; Chevrolet C10 19631972; Chevrolet 1973-1987 and also has more

SPARKS FLY WHEN THE OLD GRENADES GO Bilstein shocks are playing an important role in an impressive Group 2 BMW 320 build When Helmut Kelleners won the European Touring Car Championship ETCC together with his teammate Siegfried Müller Jr in 1980, Michael Meyer was just a tender youngster at three years old. A few years later Michael, now 42 and the owner of a master car mechanic’s workshop in the Erzgebirge, got a model of the victorious BMW 320 from Eggenberger Motorsport. “The car was always omnipresent. You keep thinking about it and your interest grows. You research the history of the car – and then something is created,” Michael said. Over the years a plan took shape to put a true-tooriginal replica of the 1980 master car on wheels. In doing so, Michael could not only rely on his own motorsport experience with old BMWs, which included Michael and his team having

built a replica of an absolute cult BMW model from Eggenberger Motorsport in 1.5 years of construction time: the ‘Jägermeister’ BMW that a certain Helmut Kelleners drove in the ETCC in 1979. In 2019, the bright orange Group 2 BMW 320 thrilled spectators at various races throughout Germany. “We didn’t expect the car to hit the ground like that,” Michael said. “We got a tremendous response and we were flabbergasted. A certain Helmut Kelleners was also appreciative of the car. “He couldn’t believe that 40 years after his great success some folks could be so crazy to copy his car models.” Michael and his team found the perfect base for the new project in a barn in Switzerland, an old BMW E21 with good bodywork. Preparations are currently underway for the car to race for the first time at Circuit Zolder. “After stripping the paint, we professionally repaired and powder-coated the bodywork,” said Michael. “We actually put in more effort than necessary for a racing car.” Where possible, Michael and his fellows used original parts. However, in order to adapt the vehicle to today’s safety regulations, new solutions were sometimes implemented.

In terms of suspension, Michael had only one partner in mind: Bilstein. After all, Kelleners and Müller also won the 1980 European Championship using the “superior” shock absorbers from Ennepetal, Germany. It is precisely there that new shock absorbers are currently being manufactured on the basis of the old data, tailor-made for the fast classic car. Thus equipped, Bilstein says the cult BMW 2020 is sure to capture the hearts of fans and Helmut Kelleners will probably take a closer look at the Jägermeister BMW again. AUTO INDUSTRY HARD CHARGER

Century’s Stu Stanners has been entrenched in the Automotive Aftermarket for more than 40 years and he’s still energised to face new challenges The first thing you notice when Century’s General Manager of Automotive Sales enters the room is his positive energy and passion for life.

“I think I was very similar to a lot of young people. I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted to do for a job, but I knew I enjoyed working with my hands.

Born and raised in New Zealand, Stu Stanners discovered a passion for all things automotive early in life.

“So many people were surprised when I landed my first job as an advertising sales cadet for the Auckland Star.”

“There’s no doubt I was born a rev-head,” Stu remarked. “As far back as I can remember, everything revolved around cars. I’ve owned hot-rods, raced go-karts and HQs and piloted a seven-second drag car.

At the time, the Auckland Star was a large national newspaper. While Stu very much enjoyed his time there, the prospect of sitting in an office all day lost its appeal, so he changed lanes and became a fitter and turner, quickly securing a role as machine shop foreman.

“You might even get me to admit that I have a small addiction for anything fast, and maybe a little dangerous,” he quipped. Stu’s drag car was a beast, and anyone lucky enough to see it cut a lap will agree it took a heap of skill to get it down the quarter-mile. “The drag car had in excess of 1,000 horsepower, but only weighed 850kg, so you might say it was a bit of a handful,” Stu explained. “In the deep end it was running 180mph, so pulling it up was always an eyewatering experience.” Just like his motorsport exploits, Stu’s enviable career in the automotive aftermarket has had a few shifts in gear. Still, the one constant is his commitment to hard work and a positive attitude. “I’m the first to admit that I wasn’t the sharpest knife in the draw at school,” Stu reminisced. “But I worked out pretty quickly that if you worked hard, the results would follow.

“I really enjoyed my time on the tools, but when FRAM Filters came knocking, the opportunity was too good to pass up, so I jumped at it,” Stu said.

Stu Stanners FRAM sales and marketing department for many years before being transferred to Melbourne, armed with the task of launching FRAM Filters in Australia.

Stu joined FRAM Filters in a sales and marketing role when he was about 20 years old. At the time, it was privately owned by the Taylor family, who had the license to sell FRAM filtration products throughout New Zealand. Stu was hooked from day one.

“Lucas Australia decided they wanted to put FRAM Filtration into the stocking list, so I took the opportunity and headed across the ditch and helped them launch the brand,” Stu explained.

“I was already a petrol head, the manager there drove a rally car, and we went and did trade shows throughout the country with other like-minded car nuts and automotive industry members,” Stu said.

“For a Kiwi working in a family-owned operation in New Zealand, jumping ship into the massive giant that was Lucas Australia was quite daunting. But gee it was rewarding, and the learnings I took away were invaluable.”

“I thought to myself, this is me, and these are my people; so at that point I knew I was going to focus on growing my career in the automotive industry.”

During this period, JRA acquired the Lucas business, opening the next chapter in Stu’s career. After being part of the team who successfully launched FRAM in Australia, he returned home to a new challenge.

Stu grabbed the opportunity, working in the

“I ended up staying there for over five and a half years and had a fantastic experience.

TRADE TALK we discovered that Stu values attitude over and above skill and experience. “Attitude counts for so much. I look for team members who have removed the words can’t and won’t from their vocabulary,” he said. “These people always go the extra mile and help build a culture of success and support. “University degrees may be important for some roles, but if you don’t have a good attitude, no degree will help you. Skill will come with training and experience. You can train people to learn a new skill, but its damn hard to train a good attitude into someone who doesn’t have one.” Stu provided some sound advice for people considering a career in the automotive aftermarket. “Listen. Twice as much as you talk. Understand that many years of experience have gone before you,” Stu advises. “I headed home to New Zealand in 1991, invested in Appco Auto Parts, and took on the role of Sales and Marketing Manager,” said Stu.

ranks. For the last seven years, he has cemented himself in the role of General Manager of Automotive for Australia and New Zealand.

Under his guiding hand, the business snowballed and in 1998 it was acquired by Repco. Stu transitioned with the business to the new owners, working with industry icon Bob Wyeth for several years and assisting with numerous acquisitions during his tenure. Next, Stu spent two years as General Manager of the Auto One franchise before joining Century Yuasa Batteries in Sales and Marketing.

“I’m a team builder. As the General Manager, I have a broad range of responsibilities, mainly based around sales but work closely with finance, warehousing, and so on,” Stu explained.

“I still can’t believe that I’ve been with Century for more than 17 years,” Stu commented. “It’s been an amazing ride, and I still have the same level of passion for the brand that I enjoyed when I walked through the front door on the first day.”

“A cumulative approach to strategy is critical. It ensures everyone believes in and understands the roadmap to drive the business forward. If your staff feel that they have personally contributed to the strategy, they will make it happen and it embeds them as an integral part of the business.”

Stu’s tenacity, work ethic, and extensive experience saw him quickly rise through the

Digging deeper into Stu’s leadership styles and expertise in building high-performance teams,

“You simply can’t be good at everything, so it’s my job to employ people that are the best in their roles. I build teams of people that are experts in their field and engage every manager as a part of the decision-making process.

“Walk the trail of people you find successful before you veer off in your own direction, so when it’s your turn to lead, people will follow, and you will expect the same from them as you gave others. “Understand people’s personalities and human nature as this will be one of the most important tools you will need to use regularly. Look for opportunities and take them. How you treat people is your brand, and leadership is a privilege, not a right. People buy off people.” Stu considers Century’s competitive advantage to be built on a combination of their people, their history, and the fact that they still manufacture in Australia but have the depth of resources that come with strategic alliances around the world. “Our staff is our core, and several have been with Century for more than 40 years,” Stu said proudly. “Teamwork and succession planning are critical to success, and it has built tremendous depth in the company. It works for us as the majority of our management have risen through the ranks before securing senior positions.” Responding to the value Century enjoy as active AAAA Members, Stu said the AAAA is “so essential.” “The AAAA provides a forum that the industry needs to stay connected; and they have successfully lobbied the Government on numerous issues, including the highly contentious choice of repairer campaign with success,” Stu said. “In addition, the Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo is massive for us and allows us to get in front of our customers, both Australian and New Zealand. It’s that big the Kiwis come over in droves.” To find out more about Century Yuasa, visit www.centurybatteries.com.au Australian Automotive Aftermarket Magazine August 2020

MILESTONES

MESSE FRANKFURT MARKS 780TH ANNIVERSARY Messe Frankfurt says it is celebrating by getting back to business On 11 July 1240, Emperor Frederick II granted trade fair rights to Frankfurt am Main, marking the birth of Messe Frankfurt. Now, 780 years later, Messe Frankfurt is the world’s largest trade fair, congress and event organiser with its own exhibition grounds and is responsible for (amongst many other shows) the extremely popular Automechanika trade fairs. The company can look back on an eventful history in which the Frankfurt trade fair developed from a medieval marketplace into a global player – experiencing many successes and mastering various crises. “Trade fairs have driven our city’s development,” Peter Feldmann, Mayor of Frankfurt am Main and Chairman of the Messe Frankfurt Supervisory Board, said. “Nowhere else are trade fairs such an integral part of a city’s history as they are in Frankfurt. Emperor Frederick II’s official grant of trade fair rights marks the historical origin of a success story that started around Frankfurt’s City Hall (Römer) 780 years ago and continues to this day. “From these beginnings, Messe Frankfurt evolved over the centuries into the world’s largest operating trade fair company. Yet even after 780 successful years, it remains true to the tradition of trade and internationality that is firmly rooted in its home city of Frankfurt.” As soon as Messe Frankfurt celebrated its 780-year anniversary, it was getting straight back to business: following a global lockdown lasting multiple months, Messe Frankfurt was once again holding trade fairs, kicking off with Intertextile Shenzhen Apparel Fabrics on 15 July 2020 in China. That trade fair is part of a network of some 50 international textile events in Messe Frankfurt’s portfolio, which has included Frankfurt Fashion Week since June.

Trade fairs are also resuming business in Germany – in strict compliance with an extensive protection and hygiene concepts. Smaller events are already underway on the Frankfurt exhibition grounds, and trade fairs will be joining them soon: Nordstil will be leading the way in Hamburg in September, followed by the Frankfurt Book Fair in October. Replacement dates have also been planned in 2020 and 2021 for many of the Group’s postponed events worldwide, including for the popular Automechanika shows. “We are delighted that our events will once again be serving as platforms for personal interaction,” Messe Frankfurt President and Chief Executive Officer, Wolfgang Marzin, said. “Our resumption of event operations worldwide demonstrates Messe Frankfurt’s flexibility in responding to challenges. We are able to offer our customers around the world the platforms they need – regionally, nationally, at a European level and globally – while satisfying today’s new local regulations and requirements. “The past 780 years have demonstrated time and again just how important trade fairs are for promoting economic recovery in times of crisis,

and our customers have been making it clear to us that face-to-face encounters and dialogue are irreplaceable.” A look at history shows that trade fairs, as mirrors of the economy, are repeatedly confronted with crises. Even back in 1635, for example, Frankfurt’s Spring Fair had to be cancelled on account of fallout from the Thirty Years’ War and an outbreak of the bubonic plague in Frankfurt. Already, the measures taken to help thwart the spread of disease included border closures, health certificates, passport systems, entry and exit checks and quarantines. Trade fairs’ central role in economic development was clear even then, says Messe Frankfurt, stating that no sooner had the First World War ended than plans began for the International Import Fair in October 1919 and the Spring Fair in 1920. With 95 percent of the exhibition grounds destroyed during the Second World War, their immediate reconstruction sent a clear signal about Frankfurt’s importance as a trade fair centre and trade fair operations resumed with the Frankfurt Fair in October 1948, relying in part on provisional lightweight constructions, tents and open-air spaces. Seventy-two years later, the global coronavirus pandemic has been challenging the event industry since the start of 2020. “The trade fair landscape will change as a result of the coronavirus crisis, and topics such as digitalisation, safety and security will have a key role to play,” Wolfgang said. “Yet the trade fair industry’s most important success factor remains personal encounters – something that Messe Frankfurt’s platforms have been making possible for 780 years now. Because the demand for face-to-face encounters is even greater today than it was before.” For more information, visit www.messefrankfurt.com

IN THE WORKSHOP

MEETING WITH FEDERAL MP PUTS SPOTLIGHT ON AUTO SKILLS SHORTAGES In this article, ARCA’s Mike Smith provides an update on recent discussions with Federal Member of Parliament Vince Connelly I was recently pleased to meet with Federal Member for Stirling (WA), Vince Connelly MP, alongside AAAA’s Director of Government Relations and Advocacy, Lesley Yates; Capricorn Society Area Manager, Sue Walker; Australian Automotive Services Dealer Network WA (AASDN WA) Vice Chairman, Nigel Oborne; and AASDN WA members, Dave Durrant and Ken Ringrose.

• The industry is engaging with career counsellors to promote auto trades.

Mr Connelly has an excellent relationship with auto workshops in WA and in his electorate particularly. He has taken an interest in several issues that affect this industry and I am pleased to report he has agreed to host a visit to two workshops in his electorate.

One particular area in which we are seeking government dialogue is regarding mature-age apprentices and ‘second chance’ employment.

One of the core issues we discussed with Mr Connelly was the fact that skill shortages within the automotive industry are currently at their highest proportions ever recorded. In 2017 the national shortage was reported at 27,377 skilled positions and was forecast to rise to over 35,000 positions over the following years. These skill shortages are constraining business productivity, planning, investment, and growth. We discussed with him the key reasons for skill shortages, include declining levels of new entrants into automotive trades, the poor quality of available labour, and problems with attraction and retention of labour, as well as suggestions for tackling these problems. As part of this meeting, we were able to present to him the findings of our 2020 survey into Australian auto repair and service workshops, which revealed that staffing challenges remain as the single most consistent issue across all workshops. Key takeaways from that research included: • Mechanics aged 50+ make up an average of 41 percent of a workshop’s qualified mechanics. • 30 percent of auto service and repair workshops are turning away customers because “we don’t have enough staff.” • 46 percent of our high performing workshops offer ‘second chance’ jobs (for example to exoffenders/prisoners). • The industry is working hard to enhance both the image and the understanding of auto trades as high tech, computer driven trades with a strong future in new technology applications. • Workshops are also actively involved in offering incentives to improve recruitment and retention rates.

It was discussed and agreed that while the industry is making important strides forward to address the skill shortages with retention programs and cooperative and innovative recruitment initiatives, more could be achieved with government cooperation.

Our industry is seeing an increase in the take-up of older job seekers (aged 19 – 25 years) and is uniquely well placed to mentor and support these employees as on average, independent workshops are comprised of six to eight employees with owners actively working in the business: these experienced and caring individuals can offer supervision, mentoring and pastoral care. In fact, there are very few industries that are better placed as a location for ‘second chance’ gainful employment than ours. While this is true, we are finding the current take-up of these kinds of job seekers is higher in larger workshops because there is a significant cost to the business: older apprentices are likely to be paid at the top of the apprentice salary, despite having little or no industry experience, because salary rates are fixed to the employee’s age and not their years of experience.

the Minister for Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business. It is our hope that we can meet with the Senator on-location at two workshops in Mr Connelly’s electorate, where we hope to join with other representatives of WA’s automotive industry to discuss innovative methods of addressing critical automotive trades skill shortages and demonstrate the success (and potential growth) of ‘second chance’ jobs. Also to be presented in this meeting will be the findings of an Apprenticeships Survey which will soon be released to AAAA members and Capricorn members. I will be sure to keep you up to date with how these discussions unfold.

This means a workshop is paying a third-year apprentice salary to a brand-new employee who is both unlikely to be generating income and requires extensive supervision from the experienced technicians. However that has not prevented a large proportion of our industry trying to make it work because we know offering a second chance to a person who wants to work is an important social and community contribution and we are in a good position to make that contribution. We do not want to pay older apprentices a lower wage, but as an industry we want to be able to do more to provide these job seekers with meaningful and dignified work, so we believe that dialogue with government around how we could make this work for the economy, for the workshop and most importantly the individuals concerned would be highly valuable. Thanks to the success of this meeting, Mr Connelly is now assisting the AAAA in requesting to meet Senator Michaelia Cash,

In this series of articles, Automotive Repairers Council of Australia (ARCA) convener, Mike Smith, will take a look at issues that will affect automotive repairer workshops and topics of interest to the sector including occasional profiles of mechanics and other key personnel. msmith@aaaa.com.au Australian Automotive Aftermarket Magazine August 2020

CONSUMER LAW

SPAM AND ELECTRONIC MESSAGING When promoting your business by way of electronic messages you must ensure the requirements of the SPAM Act 2003(Cth) (Act) are followed If the Act is not complied with your business may incur financial penalties. This article provides a brief overview of how to identify a commercial electronic message and what steps need to be taken to comply with the Act when sending commercial electronic messages.

What is a commercial electronic message? The Act applies to commercial electronic messages with an Australian link. To assist you identify whether the message you are sending is a commercial electronic message consider the following: • the most common electronic messages include messages sent by email, instant messaging, SMS or MMS; • an electronic message has commercial content if it contains a commercial message, for example content that promotes the goods and services offered by the business and/or third parties; and • an Australian link is defined broadly in the Act and includes the circumstance where the business sending the electronic message has central management in Australia, the recipient resides in Australia or the electronic message originates in Australia.

What requirements apply to commercial electronic messages? The three main requirements of the Act for sending commercial electronic messages are: • the recipient consents to receiving the commercial electronic message; • the sender’s information is clearly set out; and • there is a functional unsubscribe facility.

Recipient’s Consent In order to send a commercial electronic message the business must have the consent of the recipient. Consent may be express or inferred. Express consent may be obtained by way of a person ticking a box or completing a form where it is clearly stated the person will receive marketing material by completing the form or ticking the box (pre-ticked boxes are not sufficient for consent). Although written express consent provides stronger evidence of express consent, express consent may also be verbally obtained, for example over the telephone or in person (provided it is clear to the person that they will receive marketing material). If verbal express consent is obtained, we recommend making a written record, including the date the verbal consent was received and who provided the consent. 78

Australian Automotive Aftermarket Magazine August 2020

Consent may be inferred where an electronic address related to work is clearly published by the recipient so the public, or section of the public, can send a message; the commercial message is relevant to the work done by the recipient; and there is no indication that the recipient does not wish to receive commercial electronic messages. Consent may also be inferred where there is a strong existing business or other relationship and the conduct of those concerned do not indicate a commercial electronic message may not be sent.

Consent and ‘refer a friend’ type campaigns These types of campaigns have a person submit the contact information of a ‘friend’ to the business so the business can send a commercial electronic message to the ‘friend’ or have a contractor, such as a mailing house, send the commercial electronic message to the ‘friend’. Such campaigns may also ask the person to forward a commercial electronic message onto a ‘friend’. If it is found that the business sent the commercial electronic message, or caused the commercial electronic message to be sent, without the consent of the ‘friend’, then the business will have contravened the Act. It is important to note that the business may be found to have caused the commercial electronic message to be sent even if the person forwards the message to their ‘friend’ themselves. Whether this is the case is a complex question and caution is required by the business. We recommend obtaining advice if conducting any such a campaign.

Sender’s Information If the business sends a commercial electronic message, clear and accurate information about the business or the person sending the message must be clearly set out in the message, as follows: • the business or person sending the message must be clearly identified; and • details of where the business or person can easily be contacted must be provided. The information provided in the commercial electronic message must be valid for at least 30 days after the message is sent.

Unsubscribe Facility The commercial electronic message must have an unsubscribe facility that is clear and easy to locate together with a statement to the effect that the recipient may unsubscribe from receiving commercial electronic messages by using the electronic address (unsubscribe facility) provided in the commercial electronic message. For example, an email may have an email address

that can be replied to or contain a link to an unsubscribe facility web page, and telephone messages may enable the recipient to reply ‘stop.’ The recipient must not incur a fee for using the unsubscribe facility (other than the usual cost for using the unsubscribe facility, for example the cost of sending an email or SMS message). The unsubscribe facility provided must be capable of receiving the unsubscribe requests from all recipients who may make an unsubscribe request following the receipt of the commercial electronic message and be monitored for at least 30 days after the commercial electronic message is sent. If a person chooses to unsubscribe, the request to unsubscribe must take effect within five business days of receipt of the unsubscribe request.

Takeaways The key takeaways are: • ensure you have consent to send the commercial electronic message; • ensure your information is clearly set out in the commercial electronic message; • ensure your commercial electronic message has an unsubscribe facility that is functional for 30 days; and • if you received an unsubscribe request ensure it takes effect within five business days. HISTORIC SANDOWN 2020 CANCELLED

Event organisers and competitors now look ahead to 2021 In announcing the cancellation of the Historic Sandown 2020, which was to be held in November, event organiser the Victorian Historic Racing Register (VHRR) Committee, explained it has for some time now been in preplanning for the event and incorporating both the Government’s COVID-19 restrictions and Motorsport Australia’s Return To Race strategy into the deliberations. “Our Event Secretary and Clerk of Course have been developing Supplementary Regulations consistent with Government restrictions, which would have required restrictions on the number of persons onsite, including no Spectators, a likely limit on Pit Crew of one or two, no Trade Stands, no displays and no food or beverage sales,” the VHRR said in an update to competitors.

CRAZY CARS RAISING MONEY FOR CANCER RESEARCH Shitbox Rally 2020 Spring will travel from Mackay (QLD) to Darwin (NT) this October Look out Mackay, Darwin and towns in-between – 550 people in crazy cars are headed your way this October for Shitbox Rally 2020 Spring. Shitbox Rally is Cancer Council’s biggest independent fundraiser with the 2020 Spring rally goal set to $2 million with overall funds since the rallies began in 2009 reaching $22 million and funding ground-breaking cancer research projects. It’s not a race and vehicles must be worth less than $1,000. There are plenty of prizes for the biggest fundraiser, best dress up, craziest looking car and more. Teams of two in 275 cars plan to leave Mackay, Queensland on Saturday the 10th of October. After seven days of driving almost 3,500kms on dusty, dirty, mostly unsealed roads with six stopovers in remote locations, they will cross the finish line in Darwin on Friday the 16th of October. James Freeman founded Box Rallies (Shitbox

and Mystery Box Rally) after losing both parents to cancer within 12 months. “The route for the Spring Rally will take us through parts of remote outback Australia, so we can add revenue back into the community,” James said. “We will drive up the middle of the Great Dividing Range and a reasonable way up Cape York Peninsula before heading West. This route will feature a lot of wild, heavily varied terrain, plenty of bull dust, plenty of river crossings and is definitely not for the faint of heart.” Many participants have been affected by cancer in one way or another. The rally not only wants to raise awareness and money for Cancer Council, but also wants to offer support and a friendly ear to those that have suffered or are suffering. START YOUR ENGINES “Whilst it was likely that the event would be conducted at a financial loss, our primary consideration has been the health and safety of Competitors and Crew, and our Officials and strict compliance with the Government restrictions applicable at the time of the event. “Unfortunately the situation in Victoria has continued to worsen with increasing doubt on our ability to conduct the event.” While stating that the decision was reluctantly unanimous, the VHRR hopes its decision is understood. “We trust that you can appreciate our efforts in attempting to run the event and that you understand that we have been left with no choice in reaching this decision,” it said. “We look forward to welcoming you to Historic Sandown 2021 when hopefully this dreadful virus will be under control. In the meantime we trust that you and your families maintain good health in these difficult times.” For more information, visit www.vhrr.com 80

LIQUI MOLY REMAINS IN FORMULA ONE The German oil manufacturer has signed a three-year contract with the racing series Liqui Moly has extended its involvement in Formula One, signing a contract with the racing series until the end of 2022. At half of all races, advertising boards of the German oil and additive manufacturer will be on display. “Never before have we concluded a sponsorship deal with a greater media impact than this one,” Liqui Moly Managing Director, Ernst Prost, said. For three years, until the end of the 2022 season, Liqui Moly will be Official Sponsor of Formula One. “The unique reach of Formula One enables us to increase Liqui Moly’s brand awareness all around the world,” Ernst said. “Formula One is premium in motorsport and Liqui Moly is premium in oils and additives. Advertising in Formula One is a strong signal to both the end users and the trade. This helps us stand out from the ever-increasing background noise of the media.” Liqui Moly entered Formula One in 2019. A medium-sized oil and additive manufacturer in the world’s largest racing series, it says that move really made the industry sit up and take notice. At eleven races, the blue and red logo was prominently displayed along the track.

“In total, a cumulative TV audience of more than 1.9 billion people from almost 200 countries around the world watched these,” Ernst said. That is before you take into account online broadcasts, the viewers on location and the post-event coverage. A total of almost two billion viewers from almost 200 countries watched the races of the 2019 season on screen. On site, there will be an average of 200,000 spectators per race and on social media, Formula One achieves impressions in the billions. “Such a global reach doesn’t exist anywhere else,” Ernst said. “The fact that the partnership is expanding after a successful first year, proves the value that F1 can deliver in terms of brand recognition and preference,” Formula One Chief Executive Officer and Chairman, Chase Carey, said. “We are excited to continue exploring ways to further integrate Liqui Moly into the F1 ecosystem.” Formula One is the largest, but not the only globally relevant sponsorship of the oil brand. Liqui Moly is also represented in MotoGP, is the title sponsor of the Liqui Moly Bathurst 12 Hour endurance race, was present at the European

Handball Championship in January, and also appeared at countless winter sports events. “None of this is an end in itself, but rather they are building blocks of our marketing concept to support retail sales at our partners,” Ernst said. The global impact of these commitments is central to Liqui Moly. The share of its domestic market, Germany, in total sales is steadily declining. “We have such a strong position there that further growth is difficult to achieve,” Ernst said. “And that is why our future lies in international business. There is still enormous potential lying dormant there, which we want to exploit. Formula One is an important instrument for this.” For more information, visit www.liqui-moly.de Australian Automotive Aftermarket Magazine August 2020

GOTREADS AUSTRALIANMADE HIGH FLOW Recovering Traction Since 1975 EXHAUST SYSTEMS A new range has been launched by Terrain Tamer With new ECU and remapping technology, the industry has come a long way to increase power and fuel economy, and better meet the demands of modern 4WD vehicles. To assist with this further, Terrain Tamer has just released the first in its new range of Australianmade High Flow Exhaust Systems, to fit the Toyota Hilux and V8 Landcruiser 79 Series. Constructed from 409 Stainless Steel and coated with black heat-proof thermal paint, Terrain Tamer’s new exhaust systems feature a double braided flex joint and three-inch mandrel bent tube which acts to maximise the gas flow of the engine, leading to better fuel economy and improved performance.

Australian company A247 says Go Treads were designed in 1975 around one word – simple. It stores in small places and can be put into position in a matter of seconds with no tools, no assembly and no attaching to the tyre required. You can even park on top of them for vehicle levellers if you so wish. Go Treads are made of flexible, high strength, high impact polypropylene copolymer with special additives to give this durable plastic even greater toughness. Yet, with all this strength, it weighs only 2.6 kilograms, and it floats. The smooth finish of Go Treads reportedly allows the mud and snow to shake off for easy cleaning. For convenient storage, GoTreads folds to an overall length of twelve inches. A247 says that compared to other traction devices on the market such as Maxtrax and Tred Pro, GoTreads take up little space and can be kept in any handy location such as under the vehicle’s seat. GoTreads are made in Kansas in the United States and are guaranteed for life.

How to use: • Step one: turn off the vehicle and put it in gear. With the tool fully unfolded, lay it out in line with the tyres that are stuck. • Step two: with the smooth surface of the short section down, push it between the tyre and the rut. • Step three: once properly positioned, very slowly accelerate. This allows the tyre to pull the GoTreads into the rut. • Step four: now that the tyre is on a solid gripping surface, you can drive out and to a safe location. BRAND NEW ARB ROOF RACK ARB says there is a new kid in town ARB has long offered a range of tried and tested alloy and steel tubular roof racks; and while this “bulletproof” series of classic racks has undoubtedly secured its place within the range, ARB says there’s now a new kid in town. ARB explains its team of engineers have spent years designing, trialling and testing the all new BASE Rack, which it says is a revolutionary new roof rack that is “sleeker, stronger, smarter and bound to impress.” Featuring a fully welded extruded aluminium design with beams that run the width of the

vehicle, the BASE Rack reportedly has the strength of the steel racks at a fraction of the weight. Due to the strength in the cross beams, ARB says there is no requirement for a sub-frame, getting the rack lower to the roof of the vehicle. The lowprofile design means the roof rack looks sleek and becomes more integrated in the vehicle’s overall appearance. Utilising a dovetail system on both side profiles of the rack’s internal beams and the external side of the perimeter beams means there is more flexibility to attach a wide range of accessories where you need them and without disturbing other cargo. The side mounting profile also provides full use of the beams’ top surface and allows the beams to support cargo without worrying about protruding tie-down points. The BASE Rack allows for quick and simple customisation, with options to keep it as a flat rack with no rails or purchase the kits to transform it into a rack with 1/4 rails, 3/4 rails, trade rails or full rails as you desire.

Fit cargo however you like with a range of accessories making it easier to attach, adjust or remove as you need. A wide array of accessories can be attached via a simple clamp mount and can be added to any point along the internal or perimeter beams. The ARB BASE Rack starts from $1140 and is available in store now in a number of sizes to complement the vast range of 4WDs on the market. Further development is currently underway and will be released in the near future. For further details, visit www.arb.com.au

KEEP THE WATER OUT HSP says its advanced engineering has made the HSP Roll R Cover “the most watertight option on the market” The HSP Electric Roll R cover is a revolutionary retractable cover, says HSP, which explains it is a fully electric unit that allows the user to open, close and pause at the click of a button. It is also watertight, with HSP stating the focus has been on not just keeping water out, but also about creating a safe passage for the water to exit. When there is rain, the water will sit on the unit and run down the interlocking extrusions to the side rails. These side rails have both a Z-seal as well as a gutter and this allows the water to flow towards one of the four drainage points and safely exit your vehicle. While all roll tops require maintenance, HSP says it has made the maintenance super simple and it can be done at your own home in less than five minutes. For more information, visit the HSP 4x4 Accessories You Tube channel. The HSP Roll R Cover is reportedly the only roll top that is 100 percent manufactured and owned by Australians in Australia. INDUSTRY AWARENESS

MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS Melissa Whiteside of AAAA preferred partner Austbrokers ABS and Registered Psychologist Ben Paris from Altius Group, offer the following seven tips to help you manage the mental health impacts of transitioning back to work With the economic repercussions of COVID19 widespread and significant, the importance of returning staff to work in a safe and timely manner has never been greater.

been distanced from and encourage others to do the same. Ask how they have been, be interested in their story and share your own experiences with them.

Fortunately, we have had more time to prepare for returning than we had to prepare for our departure and so while doing so, it is important we factor in the mental wellbeing of employees.

4. Focus on what you can control and accept what you cannot

As such, Austbrokers ABS is pleased to share with you, thanks to PeopleSense by Altius Registered Psychologist Ben Paris, the following seven top tips to help you and your team manage the mental health impacts of transitioning back to work when appropriate post COVID-19.

1. Recognise resistance

Try to maintain an optimistic outlook amongst your team – expecting positive things to come from returning to work. At the same time, try to discourage others from seeing returning to work as being unbearable and permanently stressful. Help employees to take a long-term perspective and remind them they will adjust to the change in routine and assist them to look for opportunities for self-discovery and growth.

Many of us automatically resist change. Change can be associated with fear and a loss of control over our environment, and resistance is a normal human response. In the same way it took employees time to psychologically adjust to being away from the workplace, it may take them time to adjust and re-establish a daily work routine.

5. Keep employees informed

2. Acknowledge emotional responses

6. Encourage employees to keep up their self-care

Many employees may experience feelings of fear, sadness, anxiety, anger and even excitement about returning to work. These are normal, human responses to an unusual situation. Acknowledging feelings can be a helpful step in accepting and adjusting to change.

3. Re-engage with your colleagues Encouraging strong work relationships can promote a sense of confidence, optimism and enjoyment within the workplace. It is important to make efforts to reach out to colleagues you have

Keep providing employees with updated information from appropriate sources within your organisation. Rumours and misinformation can fuel anxiety and negativity within the workplace, making it more difficult for employees to adjust and establish a new work routine.

Examples of self-care you can encourage include: • Exercise: the best exercise for mental health is the one that they can maintain over time (but as a general rule 30 minutes, five times per week, as intense as can be managed is best). • A balanced diet: your brain and gut are connected. Many of the chemicals that balance mood and give you pleasure are dependent on what you eat. Educate your

employees to eat more fresh unprocessed produce, whole grains, fruit and vegetables (replace the biscuit tin with a fruit bowl). Avoiding highly processed foods, those high in fat or sugar, and those with a low nutritional content improves overall wellbeing. • Firm boundaries to protect work/life balance: encourage employees to log off at the end of the day, connect with their friends and family, and set aside time for pleasurable activities and relaxation. • Sleep: this plays a critical role in restoring the brain and body at the end of each day. Educate employees on establishing a bedtime routine and practicing good sleep hygiene.

7. Put mechanisms in place so employees can reach out when they need to Employees having difficulty with psychologically adjusting to returning to work are not alone. Providing your workforce access to an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) enables employees to receive free, confidential and professional psychological support from a PeopleSense By Altius Psychologist for any work or personal issues. We hope these tips are helpful to you in assisting you in providing support to your employees during these challenging times.
