Who was Hayim Solomon? On the rear of the One Dollar bill, are two circles.. Together, they comprise the Great Seal of the United States . The First Continental Congress requested that Benjamin Franklin and a group of men come up with a Seal. It took them four years to accomplish this task and another two years to get it approved. Look at the left-hand circle, you see a Pyramid. Notice the face is lighted, and the western side is dark. This country was just beginning. We had not begun to explore the west or decided what we could do for Western Civilization. The Pyramid is uncapped, again signifying that we were not even close to being finished. Inside the capstone you have the allseeing eye, an ancient symbol for divinity. It was Franklin's belief that one man couldn't do it alone, but a group of men, with the help of God, could do anything. 'IN GOD WE TRUST' is on this currency. The Latin above the pyramid, ANNUIT COEPTIS, means, 'God has favored our undertaking.' The Latin below the pyramid, NOVUS ORDO SECLORUM, means, 'a new order has begun.' At the base of the pyramid is the Roman Numeral for 1776. (MDCCLXXVI) Look at the right-hand circle, and check it carefully, you will learn that it is on every National Cemetery in the United States. It is also on the Parade of Flags Walkway at the Bushnell, Florida National Cemetery , and is the centerpiece of most hero's monuments. Slightly modified, it is the seal of the President of the United States , and always visible whenever he speaks, yet few know what the symbols mean. The Bald Eagle was selected as a symbol for victory for two reasons: First, he is not afraid of a storm; he is strong, and smart enough to soar above it. Secondly, he wears no material crown. We had just broken from the King of England. Also, the shield is unsupported, this country can now stand on its own. At the top of that shield you have a white bar signifying congress, a unifying factor. We were coming together as one nation. In the Eagle's beak you will read, ' E PLURIBUS UNUM' meaning, 'one from many.' Above the Eagle, are thirteen stars, representing the thirteen original colonies, and any clouds of misunderstanding rolling away. Again, we were coming together as one. The Eagle holds in his talons an olive branch and arrows. This country wants peace, but we will never be afraid to fight to preserve peace. The Eagle always wants to face the olive branch, but in time of war, his gaze turns toward the arrows.
NUMBER 215
They say the number 13 is an unlucky number. This is almost a worldwide belief. But think about this: 13 original colonies, 13 signers of the Declaration of Independence, 13 stripes on our flag, 13 steps on the Pyramid, 13 letters in, 'Annuit Coeptis,' 13 letters in 'E Pluribus Unum,' 13 stars above the Eagle, 13 bars on that shield, 13 leaves on the olive branch, 13 fruits, and if you look closely, 13 arrows. Finally, notice the arrangement of the 13 stars in the righthand circle. They are arranged as a Star of David. This was ordered by George Washington who, asked Hayim Solomon, a wealthy Philadelphia Jew, what he would like as a personal reward for his services to the Continental Army, Solomon said he wanted nothing for himself but that he would like something for his people. The Star of David was the result. It was Solomon who saved the Army through his financial contributions but died a pauper. I always ask people, 'Why don't you know this?' Your children don't know this, and their history teachers don't know this. Too many veterans have given up too much to ever let the meaning fade. Many veterans remember coming home to an America that didn't care. Too many veterans never came home at all. I am sharing this with you, learn what is on the back of the United States one dollar bill -- and what it stands for!

The Master’s Letter Saline held their Installation of Officers on Saturday evening, December 20th. The Ceremony was conducted by Paul Howell (262), Tommy Short (13), Allen Christ (159), Fred Schneider (13) and Carl Rufus (133) and we appreciate their excellent work and dedication to Masonry and the Masonic Fraternity. I am so pleased to state that when looking over the line of Officers for the coming year that we have NO Past Masters in the moving line. The only Past Masters serving in an office are those as Treasurer, Chaplain and j.kMarshal. We know that the other Past Masters will be coming up often to watch and appreciate our work and to encourage us to bigger and better things. It has taken a good number of years and many starts that became derailed for various reasons for Tom Hyatt to become your Worshipful Master. He is excited beyond belief. You need to come out and be in attendance and grasp some of his excitement and enthusiasm. We can do the work of the Lodge without you being in attendance, however, it is so much better to have you there, giving advice, encouraging and supporting your officers and members. Looking forward to seeing everyone in Lodge. Manchester continued. Guy Gilbert by January 1st. If anyone has any unforeseen circumstances or hardships, please make contact him as soon as possible. Just keep him informed please. As a final farewell, I want to thank everyone once again for an experience and honor that my brothers have provided to me for the 2008 year. It would not have been possible without each and every one of you. Fraternally Eric T. Fields Past Master Manchester Lodge #148

The Master’s Letter Greeting Brothers and Friends: Well my time in the East has finally come to an end. We held our annual installation dinner on December 8th with PGM Richard Sands residing over the installation. New Master Gill Porterfield showed up, so we knew our year would be off to a good start. I would like to thank everybody for their help in the cleaning of the lodge and helping prepare the dinner. Gill was installed along with all of the remaining officers. I would like to thank al of the brothers for the wonderful Past Masters apron. I will wear it proudly for the years to come. Paul Howell was on hand to present Gill with his Masters pin for the year 2009. It was a great honor to have him and all of our visiting guest and brothers. Since 1862, we have finally reached just over the 700 member mark. My year as Master in the lodge, we were able to raise or transfer twelve brothers into our lodge this year. It was a great success due to all of the hard work of our active members. Five brothers including myself were able to visit a brother at home to present him with his lifetime member plaque, pin, and membership card. It was an honor and a great experience for me to listen to this brother describe the history of our town and how things were back then. He had since retired from the railroad in 1962 and was raised to the sublime degree in 1967. On behalf of the Manchester lodge I want to Congratulate Del on his achievement. Congratulations to Senior Deacon Guy Cole who has been named Mason of the year in our lodge for the 2008 year. Bother Guy provided us with on outstanding assortment of food for our meetings and degree nights. Thank you for the extra pounds that you added to all of us. I want to remind everyone that the lodge dues should be turned into Secretary Continued previous column any unforeseen circumstances or

Our new brothers are already taking some stations and ready to help. We have a new EA degree coming up. The Entered Apprentice Degree will be in Chelsea with Stockbridge, Saturday, Jan 10th at 9:00AM. Please come and support both Lodges and their new brothers as they receive the 1st degree in Masonry. Brothers, please send in your dues if you have not done so already. We would like to have this completed by the end of January 2009. One of our newly made MM’s has asked for a petition for someone that had asked him about the Masons. This will be a great start for Masonry in 2009 in Chelsea. If anyone needs petitions please call I will be glade to help. We need to reach out to those qualified men to join our fraternity. We are trying to grow our email list, so you brothers that have email drop a note to the Secretary David Redding at (olivelodge156@yahoo.com). Master’s Letter
Master’s Letter Greetings, Brethren and Friends, This month (December) seems like a whirl of activity—several Golden Rule functions plus attendance at several installation ceremonies at other lodges— and the month is only half over as I write this! Many thanks to MW Brother Dick Sands for presiding at our installation this month, ably assisted by W. Brothers Bob Murphy, Paul Howell (Ann ArborFraternity No. 262) and John Snider (Zion No. 1). It was very gratifying to have W. Brothers Lloyd Kuhn, Phil Kuspa and Dave Higgs, my brothers from Union Lodge of Strict Observance No. 3 (in Detroit), in attendance. I joined Union No. 3 as a plural member several years ago, when I was living in Detroit, and entered the officer line there, advancing to Junior Warden for 2008. After both of our Wardens at Golden Rule decided (for perfectly valid reasons concerning family and professional obligations) that they could not continue as officers, I was asked if I would take the Oriental Chair this year. It was a difficult decision for me to leave the officer line at Union Lodge, but since I had, in the meantime, moved back to Ann Arbor, and believing that I could make a greater contribution to the well-being of my Mother Lodge, all things considered, than I could make to Union Lodge, I accepted. It is an honor and a privilege to serve Golden Rule Lodge as Master, and with the support of the Brethren, I will do all in my power to serve the Lodge well. Joining me as officers for the coming year are: Paul Bunten ,PM, Senior Warden Dan White, Junior Warden Henry Alvarez, Treasurer Bob Murphy, PM, Secretary Dick Sands, PGM, Chaplain Jim Lakin, Senior Deacon Matt Eberle, Junior Deacon Continued Column 3

Brethren, I hope you are all enjoying this Holiday season. In December we held our Annual Installation of officers, which was quite a memorable event. I would like to thank WB Lowell Easton, WB Rich Wilcox, and Bob Blackburn for organizing and catering the event, Joel Kimball for the beautiful bagpipe music, and everyone else who worked to make the installation such a wonderful evening. Also, thanks again to WB Paul Howell and his installation team. I am humbled and excited to take my turn in the East, and I am looking forward to serving our Lodge and working with the other officers, who are all great Brothers. Your officers for 2009 are as follows: Worshipful Master: Chris Fultz Senior Warden: Bob Blackburn Junior Warden: Bob Hotter III Treasurer: Art Davidge, PM Secretary: Seymour Greenstone, PM Chaplain: Tom Hathaway IV Senior Deacon: Brian Cors Junior Deacon: George Lucero Tiler: Rich Wilcox, PM Marshal: Scott Graf Senior Steward: Brandon Houser Stewards: Carl Breed & Clinton Bartholomew Musician: Justin Krasnoff, PM The Installation was our last formal event at the Liberty St. Masonic Temple and in January we will move to our new location, Hathaway’s Hideaway at 310 South Ashley Street in downtown Ann Arbor. This is a wonderful old building and will suit our needs well. There is plenty of parking on the surface lot right across the road. Besides moving to a new location, we will also be changing our meeting nights for both the Regular Communications and for Degrees. Beginning in January, Regular Communications and Degrees will now occur on the Second and Fourth Wednesday of each month, respectively (all begin at 7:00pm). This month’s regular is scheduled for January 14th and our first degree of the year (EA) Continued Page 8, col. 1

Ted Prentice, Steward Tom Gomez, PM, Marshal Jim Richardson, PM, Tiler Justin Krasnoff, PM, Musician. We held our Awards Dinner at Weber’s Restaurant on December 11th. MWB Dick Sands presented the 60-year pin to Brother Ross Campbell and the 50year pin to Brother Walter Aupperle. W. Brother Clarence Dukes, PM, who received his 50-year pin three years ago, shared some of his memories of the lodge from an earlier era, as well as some thoughts on Masonry that are highly relevant today. After the Awards Dinner, we retired to the Temple for our Annual Memorial Service for our Brethren who have departed to the Celestial Lodge during the previous year. It was with a combination of regret and warm remembrance that we noted the passing of Brothers Arthur T. Hughes, J. F. Vincent and Jimmie G. Wade. We presently have two Entered Apprentices, who we expect will advance to the Fellow Craft and Master Mason degrees in the coming months. Brother Secretary informs me that we’ve received a new petition and have a likelihood of receiving one or two additional petitions for consideration next month. Please note that our regular communication for January will be held on Thursday, Jan. 8, since the first Thursday will fall on New Year’s Day. Have a pleasant holiday season and a happy new year! Oh, by the way, see you in lodge! Fraternal regards, Bill Krebaum

Ann Arbor-Fraternity Lodge No. 262 has decided to leave the Temple for quarters in downtown Ann Arbor and Ann Arbor’s three York Rite Bodies have decided to relocate tot eh Ypsilanti Masonic Temple. In lowering the rental rates the Board is in hopes that these bodies will consider coming back at some future time. The Temple property is listed for sale, but it is impossible to know how long it may take for it to sell, especially in view of the present economic conditions. The Temple Board has decided to keep the building open for the time being. I think it’s fair to say that most members of the board would like to keep the Temple open indefinitely (until it is sold, at the very least). At that point the AAMT Corporation would be in a position to either liquidate itself, distributing the assets among the stockholders on a prorated basis, or using its assets to provide a suitable (smaller, with significantly lower operating costs) replacement facility for the use of Masonic Lodges and Appendant Bodies. AAMT Corporation’s Annual Stockholders Meeting will be held on Monday, January 26, 2009 at 7:30 PM at the Temple, at which time the stockholders will elect a new Board of Directors and conduct such other business as may come before them. The new Board of Directors will then convene immediately afterward to elect officers and conduct other business. The following entities are stockholders in the AAMT Corporation: Golden Rule Lodge No. 159, F & AM Ann Arbor-Fraternity Lodge No. 262, F & AM Washtenaw Chapter No. 6, RAM Ann Arbor Council No. 86, R & SM Ann Arbor Commandery No. 13, KT Ypsilanti Chapter No. 119, OES Zal Gaz Grotto No. 34, MOVPER The officers and directors of the AAMT welcome your comments and suggestions. The biggest question facing us is: “Should the Temple Corporation continue its existence in order to provide facilities for lodges and Masonic-related organizations, or should it dissolve itself with each group left to arrange for its own meeting facilities?” What do YOU think” Stay tuned for more news in the coming months. Monarch’s Letter Greetings Prophets and Brothers, This is my final letter as Monarch. The year has really flown by. I want to thank all the fellow Prophets, the past Monarchs, the various volunteers, my officers, Hilary, and Pat Tessmer without your help it would have not been as successful as it turned out. I believe we brought in a good number of new Prophets and kept the club running with a profit during these trying economic times. “Turk”, Jim Turkington, will be leading the Grotto for the next year and I wish him the best. I will do my best to support him and be available to him to answer questions he may have. Prophets please support and help him during the coming year. The kids Christmas Party was on December 20th. Here’s to hoping that all of the children, young and old had a great time.. The Tom & Jerry Party is on New Years Day starting at 8:00 a.m. Breakfast will be served until 10:30 a.m. If the weather is better than last year I may make a Three Bean Chili and we can have that and Hot Dogs if people want to stay. Installation of the new officers will be January 3rd at the Temple with the Monarch’s Ball to follow at the club. I hope to see all you there. Traditional Friday Fry’s will be on the 9th and 23rd of January. That great Sunday morning All You Can Eat, Breakfast Buffet will be held on the 18th of January. 9 am till 1 pm. Prophets come out and make light work for all by volunteering. Sincerely, Rick Wresche Monarch 2008

STATED CONVOCATION 2nd THURSDAYOF THE MONTH 7:30 PM Joint with Excelsior Chapter
High Priest Address
Greetings Friends & Companions, Where were you on Tuesday evening, December 16th? Were you at your Masonic Temple in Ann Arbor? No! You should have been. If not you missed out on one of the finest evenings in Royal Arch History in Ann Arbor in some time. The only thing better would have been the night that you were Exalted. The Sidelines were packed. Companions from 13 Chapters were represented. We had 10 candidates whom we Exalted from as close as our own new Companion from as far away as Hale, MI up north. The weather outside was frightful but the food, friendship, fellowship and degree work was so delightful. You would have enjoyed everything about the evening, including the visitation with our Companions from Canada who were in attendance. We had Grand Officers and Past Grand Officers from Grand Chapter and Grand Commandery in attendance and taking part. Although this may be the last Degree for the York Rite in Ann Arbor for some time, let me tell you that it was a great evening of unity and strength throughout all of Southeastern Michigan. If you were not in attendance. Shame on you! We did miss you and you missed out on a very special evening. Our next meeting will be in Ypsilanti on January 8th at 7:30 PM. No dinner that evening, at the temple. Looking for a good large turnout of Companions from Ann Arbor to get out work ing relationship with Excelsior Chapter off to a good start. Please stay well. Have a very Happy, Safe, Relaxing and Enjoyable New Year. May 2009 bring to you all that you may ever desire. Paul Howell
STATED CONVOCATION 2nd WEDNESDAY OF THE MONTH 7:30 PM
On November 12th we hosted the first three degrees of the Royal Arch. We of course needed some assistance from the surrounding area, which we received. It was a great evening and degree work. 4 of the 11 candidates were ours. That is and was great news for us. 3 of those who received the Most Excellent Masters’ Degree were able to travel to Ann Arbor and to receive their Royal Arch Degree on Tuesday evening December 16th. Those three new Companions will be at the Chapter at our Stated Convocation on Wednesday, January 14th and will sign the role of membership at that time. Come up and out to greet them. With your support and their support we can get York Chapter on the move again. Happy New Year.

TIM’s Thoughts Greetings Companions, “… let us not forget, amidst the cares and vicissitudes of active life, the bright example of sincere friendship so beautifully illustrated in the lives of the founders of this degree. Let us take the lesson home with us, and may it strengthen the bond of fraternal love between us, unite our hearts to duty and our desires to wisdom. Let us exercise charity, cherish hope and walk in faith.” We have two Companions, for sure, who are ready to learn those lessons that are conveyed to you in the Cryptic Degrees of the Council. We will be making plans to assist them in their advancement in Masonic education, knowledge, understanding and appreciation. As you know, we have been forced into moving to Ypsilanti, for the time being, due to the uncertainties with the Ann Arbor Masonic Temple as to its being a suitable location, permanently for us to meet. It is with sadness in the hearts of all of the Companions that we had to make this decision. There are several reasons for which we had to make this unenviable decision. We are looking forward to meeting in Joint Sessions with our Ypsilanti counterpart, Union Council No. 11. We have been working in harmony with them for the last several years and this will only bring us closer together for the benefit of Cryptic Masonry. One of the first orders of business that we will have is that of setting up dates for those Companions who are ready to join us in the beautiful degrees of the Council. The more members that we get in and actively involved in the Council the better the chance that we will be able to move back into the Ann Arbor Temple, when they can assure us of rental rates that we can afford and that they will be able to provide a Temple creating for us a guaranteed permanent residence in Ann Arbor. The York Rite Bodies are essential to the continued existence of Masonry in the local area. Our dues are reasonable. Our degrees are beautiful. Our fraternal friendship is unequaled. Submit your petition, NOW!!! Companions: See you in Ypsilanti on January 8th at 7:30 PM for our first Joint Council Meeting. Fraternally, Keep a smile on your face and a chuckle in your voice.

Commander’s Comments Greetings Sir Knights and Ladies! Another New Year is here! Again we are given the chance to spread His word! I trust each and every one of you have been very industrious in spreading His message of love & understanding. When you have something THIS special, it is hard not to! We were and are very pleased with the turnout for our Christmas Observance at the Battalion level. SEVERAL Commanderies were there, Sir Knights and their Ladies made a great event beautiful by their participation. THANK YOU to all of you in attendance, your support helps strengthen YOUR Commandery. Since our last Inspection, we have been blessed with more interest in joining our ranks. Let’s show the other bodies of the York Rite our support of them by helping them bring more light to these brothers. By sharing the work, we share the joy. Commencing this month, we will begin meeting in Ypsilanti for the year. Meetings officially start at 7:30 PM. Meeting dates are the FIRST Thursday of the month (January is the exception, we will meet on the 2nd instead, because of New Years Day.) As a teenager, I remember the “old ladies” show up at church in the fall & winter in shawls. I remember thinking, with a great deal of “superior disdain” (I was after all a teenager), ‘THAT can’t be very warm!?!’ I thought, by NOT wearing their overcoats, they were trying to show off their pretty new dresses, or some such. Boy, was I ever wrong! The beauty of the ladies & their dresses I will not dispute. They were indeed beautiful. What is really impressing me is their shawls these days! These ladies took something, in my opinion, something less than whole, and made something of value! The SCRAP of cloth they wore was nothing! The value was beyond measure. Sometimes, it is not what it IS that matters, sometimes it is what it represents! Have any of you men out there ever tried a shawl? I confess I do not wear one, BUT I have folded a lap blanket & tossed the triangle over my shoulder. WHAT WARMTH! I have found that it was not the shawl that warmed them, tho’ in itself it is quite capable, it was what it meant to them! They came to church with the arms of their saviour wrapped around them in a loving embrace! Who WOULD NOT have been warm in such ………………………………………………co

Conditions? I cannot count the times when I was warmed and comforted by my parents. They held me, comforted me, encouraged me, supported me, and yes, even thwarted me in my less than, ummm, wholesome efforts. Have any of you ever grown up with a single parent? I did, and boy am I proud of both of them! I remember so very many lessons of, well, life. Mom scraping together the “spare change” to make sure I could get the coronet I could never quite figure out how to make sound good. Dad taking the time to TAKE ME WITH HIM when he went into the office on Saturday. I remember going to church, mostly with my Dad, and watching everyone during the service. I remember my eyes were too big for the preacher. One man couldn’t hold MY attention! Ha! I remember the ladies who never seemed to get upset when their “little ones” fidgeted. When they got cranky, or just plain ornery. They simply continued loving & guiding them. Here’s a lesson for the men out there! Take a tablecloth or lap blanket & fold it so it is roughly triangular. Put the long axis across your shoulders & let the point hang over your back. Wrap the points around your shoulders, and SNUGGLE IN! Continued Page 8 Col. 1

Put an "ICE" Entry into Your Phone With Emergency Contact Information
Apparently this is a standard procedure all paramedics follow at the scene of an accident when they come across your cell phone. ICE - In Case of Emergency We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers belong to our closest family or friends. If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know who to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence this 'ICE' (In Case of Emergency) Campaign. The concept of 'ICE' is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As cell(mobile) phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name 'ICE' ( In Case Of Emergency). The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, th ere were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as 'ICE.' For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc. A great idea that will make a difference! Let's spread the concept of ICE by storing an ICE number in our Mobile phones today! ICE will speak for you when you are not able to.
