VOLUME NO. XLXV

Serving the Masonic Fraternity of Washtenaw County USPS 595-570 July 2009

A WORD TO THE CANDIDATE You are about to undergo a new experience in life – your initiation into the mysteries of Freemasonry. Life is but an experience, and your entrance into our fraternity will mark a mile-post in your life, rich as it may be with other accomplishments and associations. In the first place you will revel in a glorious association of friends; that you are regarded as a friend is evidenced by your unanimous election to receive the degrees of freemasonry. Not a dissenting vote was cast against you, otherwise you could not have been elected. Our fraternity believes that it would be better to keep without, two or more worthy men, than admit one who is unworthy. When you petitioned the fraternity, your petition was recommended by two of our members who believed you were such a man as they might wish to take within their own homes. This petition was read in open lodge and referred to a committee of three of our brethren charged with the making of an investigation as to your former life and character. The probabilities are, that had you lived at any time in your life in another city, these brethren addressed letters to lodges located in those cities in an endeavor to find out your reputation while among them. When this committee reported, you were unanimously elected and each member present was satisfied with the report of the committee as to your past history and character. In making application you stated on the petition that you were “unbiased by the improper solicitation of friends” – meaning that no member of the fraternity solicited you; that what you were doing was the result of cool and deliberate thought, since Freemasonry does not seek “classes”, resort to “drives’, or endeavor to influence its prospective petitioners through their emotions. You also stated that you were not influenced by “mercenary motives”, meaning that you did not petition with the desire of helping make your business more profitable by reason of your membership; that you came freely and voluntarily, filled with a love for your fellow man and a desire to be of service to others. Continued page 3 line 3.

NUMBER 222

MASONIC ORIGINS The precise origins of Freemasonry are unknown, and may perhaps remain so. However, despite – or perhaps because of – this, there has never been any lack of theories put forward to explain the genesis and original purpose of Masonry. Examined objectively, some explanations are less fanciful than others; indeed, the balance of probability tips decidedly in favour of one theory in particular, and as more evidence is accumulated the likelihood is that investigations into Masonic origins will truly, as Bacon put it, ‘end in certainties’. The one fixed point in the early history of Freemasonry is 24 June (the Feast of St John the Baptist) 1717, when four previously-established London lodges met together to constitute the Grand Lodge of England – the premier Grand Lodge for Masons all over the world. Before this date there are only scattered references to Freemasonry in printed literature, supplemented by occasional entries in diaries and other private papers and by the records of a small number of lodges of working stonemasons in Scotland. Beyond this are the earliest extant records of all: the documents known as the Old Charges. These manuscripts – some dating from the end of the fourteenth century, though the majority are dated after 1600 – set out a series of regulations, or Charges, for the social behaviour of Masons, both within their Craft and in society at large, together with a largely legendary history of geometry, architecture, and the craft of Masonry and a description of the Seven Liberal Arts and Sciences. The ‘Traditional’ History It is from the historical account enshrined in the Old Charges that the ‘official’ or ‘traditional’ history of Freemasonry, set out in the printed Constitutions of the eighteenth century, is derived. Romantic and wholly fictitious though it is, the traditional theory of Masonic origin long held sway. … Excerpted from: Freemasonry: A Celebration of the CRAFT MACKENZIE Press John Hamill, Robert Gilbert – General Editors

1st TUESDAY OF THE MONTH, 7:30 PM

The Master’s Letter Dear Brothers: Happy 4th of July. Hope you are able to enjoy the fireworks celebration on a beautiful summer evening. We will be having a Business Meeting on Tuesday the 7th of July. If nothing else we have several candidates who are excited about the fraternity and have submitted their petitions. The Investigating Committees have been diligent and hard at work and will have their j.kreports in to us. The reports need to be read and then we will need to vote upon the petitions. After the Business Meeting we will be having an Officer’s Meeting. This will be to discuss who will be doing work in the near future and how we may be projecting the Officer Line to look in the upcoming future. It is great that we have several young Masons that want to advance and lead you and your Lodge. It is my hope and belief that these members who are volunteering and officers are studying hard to learn all of the parts so that we can do all the work, letter perfect. That takes a lot of hard work and dedication. It is also my wish that each of you have a very enjoyable vacation this summer. Let’s hope that the weather cooperates with you. Looking forward to seeing you up to Lodge. Stay well. Tom Hyatt, WM

Greetings Brothers: Brother Scott and Thane have gone to the Chelsea Library about the Summer Reading Program and found that it was to late for a bike donation, but the Library still needs some I-tunes Gift Cards for the Reading Program. We will buy a Gift Card this year so that we can get on the mailing list for next year and receive info early. The Library was also in need of I-pod Shuffle and I-pod Touch Screen and this may be a doable thing next year. We have another petition that was read and the Investigation Committee will be reporting back soon. The Charity Poker Weekend date is July 16, 17 18 & 19 and we could use some help during the 4 evenings that we have it. Brother Richard has a sign up list and it is split up into 2 shifts, each evening. This is a good money maker. All of the Lodges that could use a little extra money to help with the winter bills. Call Brother Richard for more information if you would like to help. Chelsea is celebrating its 175th Anniversary June 25 – June 28, 2009. Lots of activities for the family. We are not going dark this year because of the many activities that we have this summer. If anyone needs petitions please call. I will be glade to help. We need to reach out to those qualified men to join our fraternity. Our email list is growing, if you have an email and you can be added by contacting The Secretary at (olivelodge156@yahoo.com). Please keep up informed of all changes in your mailing and phone address. We cannot keep in touch with you if you do not keep in touch with us. Master’s Letter Greetings, Brethren and Friends,

THE MASONIC WAY Georgia dedicated a marker to Samuel Elbert, who made a valiant stand, March 3, 1779, at he Battle of Brier Creek. In command of 60 Continental and 160 Militia, surrounded on three sides by the British, he directed one of the most valiant stands in military history. He was about to be killed by the Redcoats when his life was saved by a British officer who was a Mason and who recognized Gen. Elbert as the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Georgia. He was later exchanged for a British officer and was with Washington at Yorktown at the surrender of Cornwallis. Tied to Masonic Apron Strings By Stewart M. L. Pollard

THE UNIVERSALITY OF MASONRY Past Eminent Commander Ryoji Beutner, who is of Japanese and German ancestry, in conferring the Order of Templary to a class of candidates in Heidelberg Commandery No. 2 (Germany) gave the obligations flawlessly in English, German, Italian and French. Needless to say, he is an expert linguist – speaking some 13 different languages. Tied to Masonic Apron Strings

Master’s Letter Brethren: The year is half over (or is there half left?). Grand Lodge is behind us (thanks to SW Bob Blackburn for attending), and we will be going dark soon. So far this year, we have Raised many fine Brethren and had to say goodbye to a few, maintained a healthy backlog, and increased fellowship opportunities. Best of all, I see more faces on a regular basis at our meetings and degrees. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the officers and members for all of their hard work this year. I am lucky and spoiled to have such a supportive officer line. In June we will have our last degree, an EA, before going dark. We will be having our Annual Family Picnic (more to come on this later) this summer. In August we are planning a special event. We are planning to conduct all three degrees in one day. Mind you, this is not an "All Degree Day" in which the candidate is Initiated, Passed, and Raised, but a day in which the Lodge conducts all three degrees. No one Candidate / Brother will receive more than one degree that day, but we have many Candidates, EA's, and FC's who have been waiting patiently to receive additional light. There will be a gathering at the end of the day to relax and reflect. This event will present ample opportunities for participation in the degrees, so please study the ritual and let me know if you are interested in helping. The exact date and time will be announced in a future letter, but we are targeting mid-August. Location will be Hathaway's Hideaway (310 S. Ashley, Ann Arbor). Please look for upcoming opportunities to support charity and fundraising events. Please also remember to bring donations of books, magazines, toiletries, and clothes for our veterans at ………………………………………………

Candidate – Continued from Page 1. If you have any other such desire, ask for the return of your petition. Freemasonry offers itself only as a field for your service to humanity. Naturally, the friendships formed with the society, if true and sincere, will lead to the promotion of business connections and friendships; it could not do otherwise, but such a matter is of secondary consideration, and the good Freemason looks askance at the brother who would level the fraternity to naught but a business getting institution. High Priest Address

Greetings Friends & Companions, Time changes things. Change takes time. Time is of the essence. When I have time. What time is it? Are we there yet? All these statements reflect our preoccupation with … time. Time is something we never seem to have enough of. There are many demands for what little we have. Work, family, friends, sports, church, chores, reading a book, school, and yes, Lodge. Some years ago I was told that studies show that men nowadays have only 5 hours per month that they can share. 5 hours per month. A couple of hours a night, a couple of times a month. It’s pretty hard to get something done in that timeframe. Can you imagine undertaking a project with that level of commitment? If our kids only had school a couple of times a month for a couple of hours, what would/could we expect them to learn? Not much, and not very quickly. What can we, the Craft, learn or teach within that constraint. Almost the same answer, much but not very quickly. Masonry teaches by a method called inculcation. (through repetition) Why do you think we have a ritual for opening & closing? So it’s the same, every time. When asked what is 3 times 5, you don’t need more than a moment to tell me the answer is 15. Why? Because you learned it by inculcation. (repetition) When asked are you a Fellowcraft, how do you respond? Exactly right, repetition at work once again. The only way to learn through repetition is to practice. There is no better way to practice than to spend time with others more knowledgeable than yourself and BE THERE! Talk to each other, ask questions, LISTEN. Choose a part of any degree and make it your own. It matters not whether it is a “lesson”, the working tools, history or charge. Pick one, learn it, give it, give it again. Learn it well. Teach it to someone else. Learn another part.

Washtenaw Chapter – continued. Masonry is a quest for light. Light is another way of saying … knowledge. We, as Masons, are striving to build a house, not made with hands. How can we build without a firm understanding of the principles? What tools do we have and how do we use them? Do we have a plan? Can we read it? These questions can be answered readily, YES! Our forefathers created a system to preserve this knowledge, and a means to teach it! Come to our meetings and relearn what they taught. By participating, YOU make it live and breathe. You learn the lessons, grasp the meaning within the meaning, and TEACH them to those that follow! A lesson learned but not taught is lost. Don’t let time slip through your fingers. Don’t let our lessons be lost. Come to the meetings & learn! Spread the word, Masonry is alive and well. Fortunately for those of you NOT jumping out of your chairs to come to Chapter, July does not have a great deal of work for us as a Chapter. This will give us all a chance to catch our breath & renew ourselves. August will find us in the Grand Chapter in Flint. It will also find us meeting in our new location: 1415 Miller Ave, Ann Arbor MI 48103 at 7:00 pm on the THIRD Monday. (the 17th) We hope & believe this day & time will allow many of you to come out & sit in Chapter with us. This is the Calvary United Methodist Church at the intersection of Newport & Miller. (a few blocks west of Seventh) We look forward to seeing you! S&F, Allen Christ
