CRABBY OLD MAN When an old man died in the geriatric ward of a nursing home in North Platte, Nebraska, he left this Poem behind which the nurses found and are sharing with the world. What do you see nurses? …. What do you see? What are you thinking … when you’re looking at me? A crabby old man … not very wise, Uncertain of habit … with faraway eyes? Who dribbles his food … and makes no reply. When you say in a loud voice … ‘I do wish you’d try!’ Who seems not to notice … the things that you do. And forever is losing … A sock or shoe? Who, resisting or not … lets you do as you will, With bathing and feeding … The long day to fill? Is that what you’re thinking? … Is that what you see? Then open your eyes, nurse … you’re not looking at me. I’ll tell you who I am … As I sit here so still, As I do at you bidding … as I eat at your will. I’m a small child of Ten … with a father and mother, Brothers and sisters … who love one another. A young boy of Sixteen … with wings on his feet. Dreaming that soon now … a lover he’ll meet. A groom soon at Twenty … my heart gives a leap. Remembering, the vows … that I promised to keep. At Twenty-Five, now … I have young of my own. Who need me to guide … And a secure happy home. A man of Thirty … My young now grown fast, Bound to each other … With ties that should last. At Forty, my young sons … have grown and are gone, By my woman’s beside me … to see I don’t mourn. At Fifty, once more, babies play ‘round my knee, Again, we know children … My loved one and me. Dark days are upon me … my wife is now dead. I look at the future … shudder with dread. For my young are all rearing … young of their own. And I think of the years … and the love that I’ve known. I’m now an old man … and nature is cruel. Tis jest to make old age … look like a fool. The body, it crumbles … grace and vigor, depart. There is now a stone … where I once had a heart.

Number 229

But inside this old carcass … a young guy still dwells, And now and again … my battered heart swells. I remember the joys … I remember the pain. And I’m loving and living … life over again. I think of the years, all too few … gone too fast. And accept the stark fact … that nothing can last. So open your eyes, people … open and see. Not a crabby old man … Look closer ... see ME!!! When you next met an older person, do not brush them aside, look at the young soul within. With God’s Grace we will all be their one day too! The best and most beautiful things of this world can’t be seen or touched. They must be felt by the heart.

The Master’s Letter

Dear Brothers: Well, we did it; the transition has been made and our installation of the 2010 officers was accomplished with a fun evening. Needless to say, our new officers have some big shoes to fill. Last year, under the direction of the now junior Past Master Tommy Hyatt, was an amazing year for Saline Lodge with many new members (nine to be exact and one transfer). Our MICHIP program saw more interest from our community with a successful initial run at the Kindergarten School in Saline followed by j.k a great one day event at the local Recreation Center. Both of these have led to follow up bookings at both locations for this year. We will be at the Houghton School on Jan. 20-22 and back at the Saline Rec. Center in February on the 21st. This program has been skillfully coordinated in our area by the hardworking (and no longer junior PM!) Chuck Webster. If not for his diligence, this program would still be looking for support in our area – Thanks Chuck. Further thanks go to our junior PM Tommy Hyatt. Brother Tommy guided this Lodge through a remarkable year. We had so many new members our rituals were smoking from use! Not to mention the fact that he provided for such a harmonious and energy filled Lodge that a large portion of the new members sought out and gained chairs as officers in our 2010 line-up! Thank you Tommy for a great year! One last, but not least, heartfelt thanks goes out to Rick Vitale, our Master Mason of the Year! If not for his ability to foster a great reputation as a Mason, we would not have had as many applicants. Rick brought us good men by being a good man and a Mason – Thank you Rick! Hoping to see each of you up to the Lodge on several occasions this year.

The Master’s Letter Greetings from the East, Our first month of the new year has already been a busy one. By the time this hits the press we will have already brought a new Brother into the fold. We also have several Brothers who have petitioned for transfer into the lodge. Once again, thank you to all who have helped with the raising of our new Brothers in the last several months. It is our hopes that many more will follow. I know for myself, have really come to enjoy the fraternal bond that I now share with you all For all the area lodges, I am planning and looking forward to doing some traveling and hope to see many of you soon. I also would like to encourage any members from our lodge to join me in some travels. Brothers lets please do our part in getting our dues paid for the year. I know that our Secretary has been working hard to keep the books balanced. All of continued support would make it an easier task for brother Guy Gilbert. Also, thank you to the many who have already sent in their dues. Your continued support will always be appreciated. .Our pictures from the installation are in and if anyone would like some you can contact either Guy Gilbert or myself. We have several projects slated for the coming months and we would encourage our members to come out and support your brothers in their endeavors and also know that we sure would enjoy your company. Any area Lodges needing help in degree work or special projects can call on us. We do have many officers and brothers who are willing to help. Yours Fraternally, Guy Cole WM Manchester Lodge 148 P.S.: "Oh for some sausage gravy."

Greetings Brothers: As we start out a new year, we are interviewing a new potential candidate and have another petition to read next month. Monday evening practices have started, come and enjoy the fellowship for an hour or so. Practice starts around 7:00 PM. We are trying to set up a date to do another Charity Poker, this time it will be in Ann Arbor at the Heidelberg (215 N. Main) on the 2nd floor. New place and new people managing the Charity Poker. This a great fund raiser that is much needed for improvements for the Lodge. More information to come next month after we have got a date set. Looks like we need some roof repairs to fix a couple of leaks, but we may need to wait till spring to properly repair them. If anyone needs petitions please call I will be glade to help. We need to reach out to those qualified men to join our fraternity. We are trying to grow our email list, so you brothers that have an email address drop us an email. Also, keep us up dated if you change your phone number or get a cell phone. Please make sure that you can get us the information to keep you informed. We are always updating roster. If you receive the Masonic News via email instead of snail mail you will be saving yourself money not spent on printing and postage. If you have any suggestions or comments please contact me I would love to hear from you. Our next regular meeting will February 8, 2010 at 7:30pm, Brothers please attend if you are able. We need your support and would like to see your smiling faces. Monday’s 2009 Practice and Education @ 7:00PM-8:00PM February 8, 2010 Regular, Pizza, 6:30PM February 22, 2010 EA Degree, Tentative

“From the beginning, members of the order have given literally millions of hours of untiring service. They have devoted their time and energy to the welfare and happiness of their communities and to those needing assistance allover the world. They respond generously to every call for philanthropy, and the General Grand Chapter’s financial record reflects this generosity year after year. The principal General Grand Chapter national charity supported by all members of the order is the Eastern Star Training Awards for Religious Leadership (ESTARL) program. The awards are given to those who are making religious work their career. … since the project began, many millions of dollars have given to qualified students. Other charities that are funded through the General Grand Chapter include medical research, children’s hospitals, educational scholarships, Eastern Star and Masonic Homes and Hospitals, youth organizations, and an International Peace Garden in North Dakota. For more than 130 years, members of the Order of the Eastern Star have dedicated themselves to the loving care and service of others. Many acts of kindness on a one-to-one basis are never recorded – nor would they wish them to be. Their efforts enrich their own lives immeasurably, and the spiritual and moral ideals that prompt their service are quietly passed on to their fellow men.” Taken from: “Masonic Charities” Published by – The Supreme Council, 33 deg, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, U.S.A. 1987

High Priest Address

Greetings Friends & Companions, This year just keeps getting shorter. It seems just a month or so ago I was installed as High Priest, and now in a couple of months I will be replaced. So many things yet to do, so little time… We need to confer the Royal Arch on Peter Cole. As this is a bit longer than some of our degrees, I would like to devote an entire evening to this work. Let’s look forward to conferring this degree on the 4th Monday in February (the 22nd). If this date turns out to be unfavorable, we will book the 22nd of March. We have big news. We have gotten the NEW websites (sponsored by the Harry Klitzner Company) for both our Chapter & Commandery. We have just begun to “flesh out the details” and could use your input. The website is http://lodgepoint.com/WashtenawCh apterNo6/ We invite you to look around & HOPEFULLY someone that knows about these things can help us put this together! I know that all of this information boils down to ones and zeroes, but HOW?!?!? We are looking forward to the day when we can just look in the internet to find out when our next function is. Was that at 6 or 7pm? Does anyone else have something going on xx date? Hopefully we can make use of the internet to avoid schedule conflicts. Please contact me if you know how to program these things!! Please visit our website and let us know what you like or don’t like, if you have something to share with the Craft, this could be a good place! I am looking forward to seeing some of the newer members take their …………………………………………

ANNthat ARBOR COUNCIL NO. 86Sir candidates come in & become new

TIM’s Thoughts Companions and Friends: We are finally starting to settle into our new location. PTIM Paul Howell was kind enough to bring chili for our refreshment before the Regular Assembly in January. Mmm Mmm Good! Thank you Paul for all you do for us!! We opened & closed after the Joint meeting per our by-laws. Thank you to everyone that pulled out their rituals & studied. This simple act made the process go from a struggle to a breeze. I apologize for not attending our rehearsal for the Super Excellent Master degree on 21 JAN 10. I was in Florida on business, pleasant business, but business nonetheless. A vendor from work held a major seminar in Orlando & I was cordially invited to attend. I trust YOU helped with the rehearsal. We are really excited about working jointly with Ypsilanti’s Union Council to put this degree on LOCALLY. This has not been done for many years. Many Councils attend festivals where the Grand Council puts on an all degree day for candidates from Councils around the state. This works, but in my humble opinion, it does not FEEL the same as receiving the degrees in your own Council. Part of the appeal of the York Rite is BEING the candidate during the degrees. This continues the experience from our Symbolic or Blue Lodge. It is much more personal to me when done at or near home. The new rituals are available from Grand Council for $10. What a bargain, we finally have the work presented in a convenient, easy to carry, and easy to read format. Just one little book that contains so many BIG lessons. I will wager that if you got your ritual book out & read it, picking any of the three degrees, you would find an important life lesson. More than a few in a single degree. Sometimes they are the major lesson, sometimes they just hit you. Let them hit you, you’ll be a better person for it. School of Instruction vs. Inspection this month on the 3rd Monday (the 15th) during our Regular Meeting. Thanks to Arch Deputy Instructor Bob Powers for taking the time to travel all the way up here & make sure we are doing things properly. Make sure you are getting your daily dose of Masonry. Get your books out, read them – even if only a few pages here and there – talk to your Companions, SHARE the work – have FUN! S&F,

Greetings Sir Knights and Ladies! It was good to see so many York Rite Masons out for the meeting in January. It was begun with a Chili Dinner and great conversation. We then put on the Most Excellent Masters’ Degree of Chapter and went into our Regular Business Meeting. We concluded with the Council opening and closing as prescribed in their By-Laws. Next month we will be having a winter cookout prior to the meeting and will conclude with the Commandery conducting their opening and closing. Sir Knights, make sure that you bring you Swords and also your Chapeau. We have several All-Order Days coming up in the Spring. For you Christian Companions of the Royal Arch this might be a great time for you to improve and strengthen yourself in your Religious and Masonic beliefs. The 3rd Saturday of February in Saginaw and the 3rd Saturday of March in Battle Creek. If you have never been before, these are great days. Besides the education you also get to meet and make many new friends from around the State. The interest of the young men from around the State in the York Rite is fantastic. We need the new young Masons and the old Masons that are young at heart from Washtenaw County to join the York Rite. You will never regret your decision to do so. Although we had such a great turnout for the meeting we are looking forward to an even better one in February when hopefully some of you who were unable to join in the pleasure will be able to come out and join with us again. Ron, Rich, Dan just to mention a few. We are having a transfer into Ann Arbor which should take place in February. Besides those of us who have been enjoying the fellowship and the ritual together we need the influx of new blood to keep us young and vibrant. Wishing each of you in sickness and or distress the speediest and most complete recovery to happy and healthy spirits both mentally and physically. May prosperity reign for you and yours. Remember my Fraters to support each other in you Lives, your Masonry and in your Religious Teachings. “Every Christian Mason should be a Knight Templar.” Keep a smile on your face, Love in your heart and a chuckle in your voice.

Carry your work plumb, and Mark Well! The first impression is the strongest and longest lasting of all that a person has of another person. Make sure that your first impression is the best possible impression that you can make. Always carry yourself and your work plumb. Walk straight and upright. Carry yourself straight and upright. Be yourself. Show compassion, sympathy, love and affection. Treat others as you would want to be treated. When others watch you they are watching Masonry in action and at work. Make sure that you carry yourself and your work plumb so that you do not present a bad or incorrect opinion of Freemasonry. Never have to retract and try to make up for an error in judgment. Do it right the first time, in what you say and do. They remember longer what you have said and did than what you meant to say or should have done. Do and say it right the first time. By always presenting yourself upright then you have marked well your actions and consequently Freemasonry. Freemasonry is often misunderstood. Let us not be the reason for any more of that misunderstanding. Let us not be the reason

reason for others to be able to speak and write falsely about Freemasonry. Let each of us live by the lessons taught to us in the degrees of Masonry. By living by those lessons we will, and cannot help but carry our work plumb and Mark Well for Masonry and for all mankind. Paul Howell

Morning Prayer Joyful God; Creator of laughter and beauty, pleasure and joy, we confess our need of your delight and insight. We see longer lists and fewer days harried clerks and impatient customers, busy schedules and hurried conversations, fewer dollars and greater needs. It is easy to slip under a gloomy cloud of night. O dayspring, come and cheer; restore a childlike wonder and a shepherd’s sense of excitement. Open our ears to angel choruses and fill our hearts with joy. Put our lists in proper order and our days in service for you, joyous Creator, loving God. AMEN More Useful Trivia? If you sneeze too hard, you can fracture a rib. If you try to suppress a sneeze, you can rupture a blood vessel in your head or neck and die. If you keep you eyes open by force, they can pop out. On average 100 people choke to death on ballpoint pens every year. Only one person in two billion will live to be 116 or older. It’s physically impossible for you to lick your elbows. Women blink nearly twice as much as men.

First Operative To

Speculative Freemasons First Operative to Speculative in Scotland – 1600: As early as 1600, the Lode of Edinburgh began to admit nonoperative Freemasons. In June, 1600, the Laird of Auchinleck was made a speculative member, the first authentic record of the making of such a member. The famous Dr. Desaguliers visited the Lodge of Edinburg on August 24, 1721. He had served as Grand Master of England and was referred to as “General Master Desaguliers”. On the next day, while he was present, the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, the Treasurer, the Deacon Convener of the Trades and the Clerk to the Dean of the Guild Court were admitted as members. This date is thought to mark the change over from operative to speculative Freemasonry in Scotland. Inception of Grand Lodge of Scotland – 1736: When the Grand Lodge of Scotland was established on November 30, 1736, Lodge of Edinburgh took an active part. Thirty-three lodges were represented at the meeting which was held in the lodge room of Edinburgh Lodge. Because the oldest minute of a lodge was that of Edinburgh Lodge, it was placed first on the roll of the Grand Lodge. Lodge Kilwinning – 1642: Lodge Kilwinning was the second oldest Masonic lodge because of its records dating to December 20, 1642. Considerable friction developed in 1807 when the Grand Lodge of Scotland permitted Kilwinning to prefix the word “Mother” to its name. Published on mi-masonsannounce@yahoogroups.com “Did you Know?”
