The Masonic Apron

The Length of My Cabletow

Connecticut lecture on the presentation of the Apron to the newly made Mason. The first portion of the address is very similar to the one used in Michigan. They have added to it the following three paragraphs which thought you might enjoy.

As to the meaning of the expression, "the length of my cable tow," it is somewhat difficult to speak, owing to the great variety of interpretations that have been offered, a few of the more typical examples of which may be here given. Pike sees in it "the scope and intent and spirit of one's pledge." Brother Rev. F. de P. Castello says, "The cable's length has always been understood to be one of 720 feet, which is twice 360, the measure of the circle"; making one circle to stand for the spiritual in man, and the other for the material. He believes it to mean that "I will go as far in assisting my brethren as my moral principles and my material condition will permit." Traditionally English Masonic scholars have accepted, or promoted, the theory that modem Freemasonry evolved from guilds or associations of operative Masons consequent upon the acceptance into such organizations in the 17th and 18th-centuries of nonoperatives or speculative Masons. John J. Robinson in his book "Born in Blood", sets out to demonstrate how any terms used in the craft and the clothing worn by its members, otherwise difficult to comprehend, are explicable if one considers them in relation to the language, dress and customs of the Knights Templar.Robinson views the charges as a set of instructions for a secret society created to assist and protect fraternal Brothers on the run and in hiding from the church [Roman Catholic Church as this period of history is hundreds of years before the Protestant Reformation - 16th century]. The fugitive Templars would have needed a code such as the old charges of Masonry, but the working stone Masons clearly did not. The need for signs of recognition is even more obvious.

“The shape of our Apron is that of a square to teach you to finish your Masonic life upon the square of Virtue. Standing boldly before the world inviting the security of all; from the North, the South, the West and the East. A true Mason lives and dies upon the square. “The flap is triangular to teach you the Triple duty of an upright Mason. First: Duty to God and acknowledge Him to be your God; Second: Duty to your Neighbor by practicing the golden rule; Third: Duty to yourself by establishing the noble self respect of one made in the image of his God. The bordr of Blue is the color of Heaven to teach you that the Mason with his triple duty done, will see and salute the Grand Master of us all. “The White surface symbolizes purity. Human nature is weak my brother and life is full of mistakes, but a true Mason should always bear in mind that the violation of his Obligation is an indelible stain never to be effaced by time. The cord that encircles your body will teach you that the truths of Free Masonry encircles your daily llife, and may that apron be laid upon your dead body as clean Masonically as I have given it in your keeping.”

Most lodges usual custom is to invest a newly obligated brother with his apron. Remember that the apron is but a symbol which we should not place within a closet. Symbolically wear that apron every day in all of your actions, keeping is as an emblem of innocence, unspotted by the world. Prove by your actions that you are a Master Mason, for actions truly do speak louder than words. Wrap the ties of that symbol around your waist each day to remind you of the ties that bind us to our God, our Family, or neighbor, and ourselves.

26 THE NORTHERN LIGHT/ AUGUST 2001

In Mackey's Encyclopedia we read: "The old writers define the length of a cable tow, which they sometimes called a 'cable's length,' to be three miles for an Entered Apprentice. But the expression is really symbolic, and as defined by the Baltimore convention in 1842 (a notable Masonic gathering), means the scope of a man's reasonable ability." The Master’s Letter

Dear Brothers:

This coming month of March our Lodge in Saline will be busy! We hopefully have an EA degree to do, probably the third Friday of the month, the 19th. We also have two other great events; 1. a MICHIP at the Saline Rec. Center on Sunday the 21st, from noon to 6 PM and 2. a Lodge of Instruction j.kgiven by VP of Board of General Purposes, Brother Jack Woodyard. It will be an honor to have it at Saline Lodge, and I have heard great things about this lecture, it is entitled the “21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership”. It will be held over two Wednesday’s – March 10th and 24th, and will start promptly at 6:30PM. All officers are encouraged to come but we would like an RSVP for a head count, please, as we are putting together some grub to keep our brains fueled. Come out for two great nights of fellowship and learning! May this letter find all in good health, mentally and physically. Until we meet again, or perhaps for the first time. The Master’s Letter Greetings from the East, And thus the great sausage gravy caper was born. Was it the misguided steps of the Worshipful Master? Sausage, gravy everywhere, tux, shirt, shoes, wall, and floor. Was it the feeble attempt to heat what was left? Once again, sausage gravy everywhere. The crock had broken on a previous obstacle. Or maybe it was the empty, growling stomachs of the 20 or so brothers who showed up on a cold and early Saturday morning to welcome a new brother into the lodge. No, I believe it was the many and continuing kind hearted ribbing of the Worshipful Master on his busiest day of his very first month. Anyways, guaranteed remembrance is most undoubtedly assured. Thanks to all who helped on this special day for our new brother. A special congratulations is in order for our Secretary, Brother Guy Gilbert. He is our Lodge Mason of the Year and he has been selected as the District Mason of the Year also. It seems that our little secret has slipped out and now everyone knows of his hard work and dedication to our craft. Great job Guy! Brothers, if you haven’t sent in your dues, please do so. It helps to keep our costs low. Come one, come all. Many of us are doing some traveling to local lodges. All are invited. Fairfield Lodge hosted a Fellowcraft Degree for three brothers and several of us went to help. It was a great time, and no gravy was spilled. We will be going back on the 13th of February for three Master Mason Degrees. Help out if you can. Fraternally yours, Guy A Cole Jr. Worshipful Master Manchester Lodge 148

Greetings Brothers: The committee has interviewed a new potential candidate and was voted on at the regular meeting. We have a tentative date of Saturday, February 27th or as a back up March 6th. At this time of writing this news letter the candidate has not confirmed the date. Monday evening practices have started, come and enjoy the fellowship for an hour or so. Practice starts around 7:00PM. We have set up a date to do another Charity Poker, this time it will be in Ann Arbor at the Heidelberg (215 N. Main) on the 2nd floor. New place and new people managing the Charity Poker. This a great fund raiser that is much needed for improvements for the Lodge. May 13, 14 & 15, this is a Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We need brothers to help take money and hand out chips. Real easy job working the charity poker. Looks like we need some roof repairs to fix a couple of leaks, but we may need to wait till spring to properly repair them. If anyone needs petitions please call I will be glad to help. We need to reach out to those qualified men to join our fraternity. Make sure that you keep us informed of any changes in your address, phone numbers or email information. If you have any suggestions or comments please contact me I would love to hear from you. Our next regular meeting will March 8, 2010 at 7:30pm, Brothers please attend if you are able, and we need your support and would like to see your smiling faces. Will also be leading a new, quarterly Masonic study club at Hathaway’s Hideaway on March 24. As Albert Mackey once noted: “The brother who…supposes that the only requisite of a skillful Mason consists in repeating with fluency the ordinary lectures, or correctly opening and closing the lodge, or in giving with sufficient accuracy the modes of recognition… has scarcely advanced beyond the rudiments of our science. There is a far nobler series of doctrines with which Freemasonry is connected, and which no student ever began to investigate who did not find himself insensibly led on, from step to step in his researches, love and admiration of the order... It is this which constitutes the science of Freemasonry, and it is this alone which will return the scholar who devotes himself to the task a sevenfold reward for his labor.” Please give due consideration to this important education opportunity and join W.Bro. Seymour in exploring the deeper layers of Masonry. Below are some other upcoming events. As always brothers, I hope to see you in lodge. High Priest Address

Greetings Friends & Companions, It is with a heavy heart I pen this message. I am moving to North Carolina. As a matter of fact, I will very likely BE in North Carolina by the time you read this letter. My employer (FCR – a division of Casella Waste) has aprox 30 recycling plants over the eastern half of the United States. Ann Arbor is one, Charlotte is another. Both of these plants are soon to undergo a major renovation or retrofit to accommodate changing material streams. Many of you are familiar with what goes to the curb for recycling. All of this material will still be recycled, but will not need to be sorted by the day to day citizen before or as it goes to the curb. New machinery will process this “commingled material” (otherwise known as singestream) and make it much easier for more people to recycle. The plant in Charlotte is already in the process of these renovations & will be operational in May of this year. Ann Arbor will begin renovations in May & be operational on July first. The Maintenance Manager in Charlotte is retiring & they need someone there NOW to manage the installation & learn the new system as well as how best to care for it. After careful consideration and much prayer, Deb & I decided to apply for this position. This will offer a little more money, warmer climate, new challenges, and proximity to our children & grandchildren. When we applied for this position we thought we would have some time for wrapping things up here & getting things put together there. Boy, were we surprised when they flew me down for a tour of the facility, an interview, made me an offer on the spot, and told me they want me to start on March first. Talk about a head spin! Companions, the York Rite in Ann Arbor needs YOUR help. I need your help! We need a few Companions to step forward & help steer our York Rite into the future.

& salesmanship) Each of these LITTLE things add up together to make a big difference! And the best part is they only take a LITTLE time! An hour here, a few minutes there, they all add up. They teach us to trust ourselves & our companions. We learn to rely on each other. i.e. John is really good at xyz, Frank is really good at zxw, I can do wcj, etc. Individually we may not have the answers, but COLLECTIVELY we do! If you have ANY desire to be more comfortable speaking in a group, learning to plan, planning to work, spending time in fellowship, you really can’t ask for a better opportunity! Where else can one strive to do their best & know they will receive aid, support, and brotherly love from everyone else? You may not be ready to take the part of High Priest this year, but you want to join the line. GREAT! Greetings Sir Knights and Ladies! Happy St. Patty’s Day to each of you. Palm Sunday will be observed this year on the 28th with Passover beginning at sundown on the 29th. The 29th. Yes that is the same day as when the Joint Association for Southeastern Michigan will be having their dinner and meeting. This time we will be meeting in Samaria at 6:15 for dinner at Mt. Vernon Chapter. Hope we have a good turnout from the Ann Arbor YR Bodies. We were pleased to learn that Corey Curtiss was transferring into Ann Arbor Commandery, because of a change in his work schedule and is desirous of assuming the position of Commander. We have seen him work in Ypsilanti and have been impressed with all that he has performed. And it just so happens that we do need to have another take over as Commander. It will be great to have him as a gain to our Commandery, but, we are saddened that because of the same reason, work, we will be loosing one of our most faithful Fraters, Allen Christ. He must leave us sometime during the month of March. This is a sudden turn of events for him. You have to be were your work is and they have asked, encouraged him to transfer. This is a great loss personally and also for all of the York Rite Bodies. Sir Knight Allen has been one of the most faithful, dedicated and proficient members of the Commandery that we have had in many years. He will not be easily replaced. It will take more than one person to do so. We need YOU to step forward and assist in keeping this Commandery afloat and stable. We have members, we need workers in the quarries. Can you become on of those workers? Attend and find out what you would have to do. As we must all move on, we say “Good bye and God Speed” to Allen and Deb. You will both be sorely missed. Always remember: “Keep a smile on your face and a chuckle in your voice.

Further, if a Mason read the initiation ceremony of a candidate for membership in the Order of the Temple, preserved in the records of the Templar's trial, he would easily convince himself he was reading the ceremony of a degree he had not yet obtained. Joseph Fort Newton notes that while, at a distance in time, the middle ages wear an aspect of smooth uniformity of Faith and Opinion, in reality what looks like uniformity was only conformity and underneath its surface were many secret societies keeping their beliefs alive. While various solutions might be found, many Templars may have done what their preceptor in Lorraine reputedly advised them to do, shave their beards, don secular garb, and assimilate themselves into the local populace. - From a message by Canadian Sovereign Grand Commander John V. Lawer at Moore Sovereign Consistory, Hamilton, Ontario, 1992.

Stone Square & Compasses Brothers, There is a masonary mortared in Square and Compasses in the brick wall next to the main doors at the old Liberty Road AA Masonic Temple that needs to be perserved. Bro. Karl Grube has examined this Masonic work and believes the job can be done. He has spoken with the Secretary of the AAMTA and they don't want the old relic in any form. The owner of a masonry company from Jackson says that it can be removed without too much difficulty and it should be saved. It was fitted in seven pieces and can be taken out the same way. He is willing to have his man and their special cutting tool work with us. 1-2 hrs. of work and this will make a great artifact for the library. The Bonisteel Masonic Library has a prime display area in Detroit for this 1925 masonry and mortar work. But to do the job The Bonisteel Masonic Library needs your support. any donation can help. Your generosity makes it possible for the Library to continue its work. Please go to BML website and click on PAYPAL It's only a "point & click" away!
