CO V E R // BINTA SULEIMAN

Legally luxurious interview byy HAFSAH ABUBAKAR ABUB MATAZU

Binta Suleiman is an int interior brain behind designer. She is the bra Albedo Interior Décor and Design School, Abuja. Born in on July 26, the United Kingdom o 1977, to the family of EEngineer Suleiman Muhammad, Binta hails from Safa, Jigawa State. Among other othe things, she shee spoke spokee on how she deve developed a curriculum to curricu train on train people pe interior interio design.

Education I started my primary education in Mogwon Primary School from Primary 2. I was homeschooled by my father during my early education. He taught me everything, from reading to writing. From there, I moved to Girls’ Arabic School, Danbatta in Kano State, where I did my Junior Secondary School. Then in 1991, I went to Science Secondary School, Taura in Jigawa State, where I completed my secondary education in 1994. After that, went to the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria to study Law in 1996. I was meant to study Medicine, but unfortunately, I did not have Mathematics and Physics, so I was given Law as my course of study instead. It was a complete departure from

what I intended to study. I wanted to change my course to Medicine during my first year, so I wrote WAEC again, just so I could correct my result and pursue that dream. But by the end of my first year, I made up my mind to continue studying Law. I made peace with it and I told myself that it was what God intended for me. I graduated in 2001 and went to Law School in 2002. I got married in that same year and was called to the Bar in 2003.

BUT BY THE END OF MY FIRST YEAR, I MADE UP MY MIND TO CONTINUE STUDYING LAW. I MADE PEACE WITH IT AND I TOLD MYSELF THAT IT WAS WHAT GOD INTENDED FOR ME

Career I did my National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme in a law firm, Abdullahi Ibrahim and Co. We then moved to Katsina, where I taught at the Hassan Katsina Polytechnic as a parttime lecturer for about a year and a half. From there, we

moved to Abuja, where I worked at the FCT High Court as a legal research assistant to a judge for about three years until we moved to Lagos, so I had to quit my job. I got bored in Lagos because I had nothing to do but read newspapers and books. So I went to the Chartered Institute of Arbitration, where I am now an associate member, but I was still bored. So I used my last allowance from the High Court to buy bed-sheets and send to Abuja for people to buy. It started going well, but people started buying them on credit, so my money wasn’t coming out of the business. My sister then suggested an idea to open a shop in Kano, which I did. I renovated the place and put my bed- sheets there and added other decorative items. After I did the renovations, I realised that I was actually very good at it because it came out beautifully. So I considered looking at it as a career option since I was jobless at the time. I searched for some interior design schools in Lagos and went in 2011. I later got the certificate course and the business started running. In Lagos I was doing renovation jobs from home. We later moved back to Abuja in 2014 and a friend of mine said we should open an office. We thought of Purple Ambiance, my shop in Kano, but then I wanted something more professional because I realised that being an interior designer is much more than

WE WERE HOMESCHOOLED IN OUR EARLY YEARS, SO THERE WAS A LOT OF PLAYING WITH MY SIBLINGS. WE USED TO GO OUT EVERY WEEKEND TO THE DAM TO BUY FISH AND GO TO BAGAUDA AND ANADARIYA TO PLAY WITH THE CHICKENS AND HORSES selling decorative items. So we incorporated a company that included a little bit of everything - renovations and architectural services. So we registered Albedo Designs Limited, and here we are today, building it with a design school which started in November 2015. We are currently in the process of getting certification from the National Board of Technical Education (NBTE) so we can start giving National Diplomas in Nigeria, with a curriculum developed in Nigeria. Growing up I remember my early years being a lot of fun. I grew up in Tiga. My dad was the manager at Tiga Dam when it was being built and our house was there. It was very peaceful, green and very playful. We were homeschooled in our early years, so there was a lot of playing with my siblings. We used to go out every weekend to the dam to buy fish and go to Bagauda and Anadariya to play with the chickens and horses. Challenges Part of my personal challenges in life is finding out the person I am and who I am becoming. Most of my personal challenges are within me and managing people,

I told him that “life is difficult,” and he replied by saying that “life is supposed to be difficult. It is not supposed to be easy.” So from then on, I recalibrated my mind and told myself that this is how it is and I have to face the challenges as they come. It allowed me to separate and handle the parts of my life from my life at home, work and my friends. Life lessons To always be positive and strong, work hard, keep pushing and never give up. Things will always work out. Aspirations I wanted to be a doctor. I also wanted to be someone who is successful and whose life is in order. Childhood memories I miss playing always. Life was very easy and uncomplicated. We used to wake up in the morning and feed the chickens and animals in our petting zoo - the rabbits, tortoise and cows. How I met my husband I met him in the university: the ABU, Zaria, during my first year. He had left school but we had a friend. That’s how we met. Most cherished gift My most cherished gift was from my husband. When I wanted to open a shop in Kano, I did not have money because I was jobless at the time. My husband gave me 2 pieces of land and told me to sell them and put the proceeds into my business. I cherish that because it came at a time when I needed it the most. Most cherished attribute of his ture. He is selfless to His generous nature. d gives i and gives. He a fault. He gives and tive. Kusugu: Daura’s ancient well by MULIKATU MUKAILA

D

The Kusugu well used to be the only source of water for the people in Daura during the reign of Daurama, a female queen. In those days, people were only allowed to fetch water on Fridays only because of a strange snake that lived inside the well. The snake was known as Sarki. This continued until a prince from Bagdad, Abu Yazid, came to their rescue. Bayajida, as he was later called, killed the snake in the 10th century after a big fight and married the queen. The sword that was used in killing the dangerous snake is still in Daura as an evidence for tourists. With additional information from the internet

Although the well, which is over 100 years, has been renovated and well taken care of by the people of that town, the story behind its existence is always fresh when told to tourists from within and outside the country.

Foods that enhance your beauty as a woman by HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU

H

aving a good diet and the right types of food is very important to your health and beauty. Not only will it visibly show on your skin, it will make you healthier on the inside too. Food contains the most essential building blocks for staying youthful and beautiful. It is not all about exercise, your health is mirrored in your skin. These foods are what every woman should make sure she eats to look healthy, ageless and flawless. The changes you will see will be worth it. Fish – Fishes are very important because they are rich in Omega-3 fatty acid. It is one of the best sources of natural oil for your skin. Most women believe that fat is bad for you because it causes obesity, but the fat in fish is very healthy. Without it, your skin can become dull and dry. Wheat - Wheat and other whole grain products are a healthy alternative to the refined carbohydrates in pasta and white bread, which are converted into sugar. It can also become a contributing factor for diabetes. Wheat is packed with fibre, which promotes digestion and flushes out what isn’t good for your body.

Water – The benefits of water can never be emphasized enough. It keeps your skin hydrated, soft and supple. Water should be a major part of your diet. It is also a great alternative to fizzy

and sugary drinks that can affect your skin negatively by causing bloating and breakouts. Green tea – Green tea contains antioxidants which fight the effects of aging. It is excellent for women who want to lose weight. It is healthy, so drink it regularly. Sweet potatoes - Sweet potatoes are full of Vitamin A, which also reduces wrinkles and signs of aging. There are many creams in stores that contain Vitamin A, but using too much of them can also be bad for you. Eating natural foods that contain them is a better option. Avocado - Avocados are rich in healthy fats, Vitamins A and C, and fiber. It is the perfect food for enhancing your complexion. Avocados are also a common ingredient in making skin masks. But eating them is much more beneficial. Also, avoid applying it to your face if your skin is prone to acne.

the heart. They also protect the skin against aging. It is also very beneficial for the eyes. Cheese - The calcium found in cheese is just as important for your teeth as it is for your bones. The combination of casein (a protein found in cheese), phosphorus and calcium helps replace lost minerals in your teeth. Also, eating a small amount of cheese after a meal can help to neutralise the build-up of acid left in your mouth after eating, as well as stimulating the production of saliva, which can help to reduce dental issues, helping you achieve a brilliant smile with stunning teeth. Apricots - Apricots are rich in the carotenoids and xanthophylls, nutrients that help protect eyesight from aging-related damage, especially the retina from damage caused by blue light. Eating apricots regularly is definitely of great benefit as it may prevent you from using glasses in life.

Strawberries - Strawberries protect your body with powerful anti-cancer nutrients known as anthocyans, which play a role in cell repair. Research has shown that anthocyans may decrease the risk of several cancers, such as breast and gastrointestinal cancers. Also, strawberries are brimmed with Vitamin C and folic acid. They offer powerful anti-oxidant which protects

MY CERVIX IS SHORT I had a miscarriage in January, then I was twenty weeks pregnant. The doctor told me my cervix was short then. Now I am two months pregnant what do I do? Usually second trimester miscarriage is common in patients with cervical incompetence. That is when the cervix cannot hold the pregnancy as pregnancy advances which leads to miscarriage. The cervix becomes progressively shortened as pregnancy advances and in such cases, miscarriage occurs usually between thirteen and twenty six weeks. A woman with two recurrent miscarriage within the second trimester is likely to have cervical incompetence. The miscarriage is usually painless and the baby may come together with the sac. But nobody wants to have two miscarriages before taking the necessary steps. Therefore anybody with history of one midtrimeter miscarriage should have serial Transvaginal scan for cervical length assessment. I will suggest you see an obstetrician and Gynaecologist now for assessment. You are likely to benefit from cervical cerclage. This is usually done around the fourteenth week.

What can I use for low FSH? I got married seven months ago and did hormonal test, I was told I have low FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone). My menses has been regular and since I got married I have never been pregnant. Can you prescribe medication for me to correct it? (Amina, Niger State)

How old are you? First, I want to retriate the necessity of patience in management of conception after marriage. We have advised couple not to rush for investigations until after one year of marriage. The exceptions of this rule are things like, a woman above thirty five years or couple with known pathology. If you are seven months old in marriage and less than thirty five years, I will advise you to wait a little bit more. Concerning the low FSH, since you are having regular and normal menses leave this for now. Hormonal test should not be done just anywhere but in a well standardized laboratory. Also the interpretation of hormonal tests are combination of history, clinical findings and the laboratory results. No one should prescribe based only on the result.

Can I deworm again? I deworm myself five months ago. I vomit occasionally and the doctor asked I deworm myself again. Should I? Kashim, Gombe The fact that you took worm medicine five months ago does not mean you cannot have worm infestation now. This could be from reinfection, poorly treated or another strain of helminths. In our environment the issue of fake and substandard drugs is also a problem. What you need to do is to see your family physician and part of what to be done is stool microscopy. This will confirm the presence or absence of ova and the type of worm for appropriate medication. There are some those of helminthiasis that requires more than one dosage of medication which is the usual dose for most worms.

Please, we encourge all who send questions or contributions to include at least their first name and town or city. Readers are also advised to copy the Tambari email address above while writing in. Thank you - Editor TAMBARI SUNDAY, O C TO B E R 9, 2016

A

s part of their corporate social responsibility, manufacturers of food seasoning ONGA participate in wedding ceremonies. Mr. M.B Umar Hankaka along with some management staff of Promasidor, the manufacturers of ONGA and Cowbell at an event last saturday, said “ONGA is accustomed to sponsoring traditional marriage activities in the northern part of the country, as it is doing the same thing in supporting women August gathering in the south east,” he said. The couple testified to the fact that they received cartons of ONGA and some food items. “My bride received cartons of ONGA and food items and representatives of the brand at their wedding. But, however, the Divisional Sales Manager North of Promasidor, Muhammad Ebije, said some wedding ceremonies donot attract huge gathering, and for this reasoning

we often take advantage of wedding ceremonies to showcase our products for the public to judge for themselves. According to him: “Kano is our largest market in the northern part of the country that’s why we often sponsor traditional activities in order to discharge our corporate social responsibility.” The regional sales manager North, Mr. Monday stipulated that ONGA is now a household name, as well as a leading food seasoning in this part of the country. “Many attimes we used to donate the sum of thirty thousand Naira cash, 10 – 15 cartons of ONGA and about 30 – 40 chickens whenever and wherever we deem it fit to support traditional marriage activities. But our priority is the women activites, hence our contribution often go straight to the bride.”
