// DESIGNERS SPEAK

Ade Bakare by PRISCA EMADU

A

de Bakare Couture is a London-based designer who specialises in female outfits and bridal wears. He is also the creator of Breeze perfume. This renowned designer spoke with Tambari about 2015 fashion and gave an insight into the anticipated trend this year.

How did the fashion industry fare in 2015? The fashion industry in Nigeria saw the emergence of new designers. Fashion shows were less in number due to the elections but, generally, the industry is buoyant .In Britain and other western European countries, fashion has continued to see the established brands expanding, bringing in a lot of

revenue. The western economies are out of recession and spending power is enhanced, which the fashion industry has benefitted tremendously from.

What trends (colours, style and more) should we expect in 2016? In 2016 we see the emergence of bright acid colours, oranges and yellows, citrus fruit colours, lots of jackets and coat designs and more individualistic styles, led by celebrities. In Nigeria, our new ankara line has proved very successful, having sold out after our couture show at the Wheatbaker Hotel in Lagos in December. The line is very feminine, with touches of lace and silk organza, short dresses, some sleeveless. A line blouses with long fitted skirts with net shawls. In London, our beaded high neck jackets, inspired by the Maasai tribe, with long eveningwear silk dresses are selling well, alongside our signature perfume, which will also be available at the Lagos boutique in early February for Valentines’ Day.

heriff Oyeleke is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Abuja-based Riff by Sheriff, an urban contemporary men’s wear brand which makes African traditional attires.

How did the Fashion Industry fare in 2015? 2015 was an interesting year for fashion both at home and on the international scene. Internationally, we saw a sharp rise in what industry people call ‘fast fashion’. A phenomenon that has cut down the retail price of clothing and slightly altered what most people know as traditional seasonal fashion. It seemed like suddenly the major industry players woke up and realised that people were insatiable, wanted more variety and better still–cheaper. To me, I think there was no event more significant in fashion business last year than the Balmain for H&M collection. At home, there was an evolution in terms of our mentality towards fashion. More

d i b i vibrant ib b designers became more d daring, but, most importantly, smarter business people. There were small but significant number of usually ‘bespoke’ or ‘couture’ designers or fashion houses adding ready-to-wear collections to their line. Fashion industry has really blossomed in Nigeria. Also, the fashion shows in 2015 were a significant step away from the year before. From the smaller Shows to the bigger ones, the prospects look quite promising for 2016.

What trends, style, colours and theme of fashion are we expecting in 2016? It’s a tough one to speculate because fashion usually has a mind and life of its own. More often than not, trends could literally spawn from somewhere and, just as quickly, disappear into nowhere. However, what I do know is that industry players will continue to find more interesting and unique ways to reel in the crowd, because there are just so many designers and design houses out there-the competition is stiff. Every year we see new, more daring and cheaper retails come out and we see some bow out. It’s the inevitability of the fashion life cycle. I do hope to see men wear more vibrant and exciting design, styles

and colours. I see a few designers have started the trend but I am not sure it has caught on yet, or if it will. Our brand will play with more colours in 2016 for the guys and, hopefully, start a female line and, of course, a very exciting project with an amazing Milan-based fashion house Bendtmark Milano, called: arity. Fashion For Charity.

What are your other utside passions outside signing? fashion designing? I am a teacher at heart and I’ve been that way since I was asters degree little. I have a Masters in I.T. Also, I havee a deep love and regard for art in whatever form. I look for art in everything– because it is there. I guess at the end of the day it isn’t actually surprising seeing fashion as an art.

L

anre Da Silva Ajayi (LDA) is one of the A-List fashion designers in Nigeria. In the last 10 years, her passion for fashion has grown stronger, making her label a favourite for many, both at home and abroad. She spoke with Tambari about where she sees the industry in the next five years. How do you see the fashion industry today and where do you see it in the next five years? I am impressed. I think we are doing a lot in the fashion industry. Everything about fashion is expensive so you have to really invest. A lot has happened in the last five years and I know there is going to be more mo improvement in the next five years. Mo More bold colours, colourful and classy ffabrics, like lace, will keep trending.

What aare your passions? I am pass passionate and interested in fashion. I love lo fashion. After university, I decided to go into the fashion industry and I got a po positive response from people in Nigeria and aabroad. My own passion is in clothes. My h highest point so far is being at Dolce & Gabbana. It’s the highest point fo for me.

Shehu Yakubu (Sabali)

CO V E R

Binta Shuaibu by VICTORIA ONEHI Binta Shuaibu won the MTN/British Council designer of the year award in October 2011. She is the brain behind Vintage Colette based in Kano. She tells us about fashion trends to expect this year.

How did the fashion industry fare in 2015? The fashion industry in Nigeria did tremendously well in 2015 with a lot of trends from across the globe, causing a ripple effect within the country. Every Nigerian woman, inclusive of those in remote locations, is very fashionable and constantly seeks the approval of others around them to appreciate their fashionable effort. Financially, those who ran the business of fashion as well as fashion entrepreneurs experienced marginal market value for their products and services due to the economic realities of the nation.

What style, colours and trends should we expect to see in 2016? Trends: the trends and fabrics to look out for are the tie and dye, black and white stripes, pleats, oriental art patterns, stylish wraps, matching sets, sophisticated waist belt, bags and half moon bags, chantilly lace, mixing and matching textures and patterns and more. Others are relaxed denim and tailored blazers, basics from a capsule wardrobe, a lot of shiny fabrics, sequined leggings, wrapped up skirts as well as colourful reflective eyewear, fringed belts and statement necklaces and more. Colours: For colours, the dusty pink, lilac grey, peach and peach echo, sea green or limpet shell, classic blue with muted finish, snorkel blue and bright and bold red, fiesta, and also burgundy and maroon for men’s wear. Style: Wedding dresses would come in styles of high-low, illusion bottoms, and pearls in different sizes, fringe, floral prints, plunging necklines and soft sleeves. Other styles for an everyday look would be inclusive of hoop earrings, lace camisoles, and V-neck silk dresses. My clients should be looking out for affordable fashion apparel with selection of minimum of three pieces monthly that are fashionable, fresh, exciting and functional and totally worth the investment.

What are your other passions outside fashion design? I read books that are totally unrelated to my profession, raising awareness on girl-child education in Northern Nigeria and contributing to nation building.

Shehu Yakubu is the brain behind Sabali Fashion, based in Abuja by MULIKATU MUKAILA

How did the fashion industry fare in 2015? It did well, but 2014 was better. There were some challenges due to our recent economic difficulties in Nigeria but we hope for better patronage in the second quarter of 2016 and beyond. What trends, style, colours and theme of fashion are we expecting in 2016? People are warming up to take risk with brighter colours, so expect more people to

pull-off bright colours in beautiful ways. The age of free-loose clothes is coming to an end as everyone is jumping on the wagon of fitted kaftans, shirts, gowns. Gyms are getting full as no one wants to be left behind in the trim and smart trend. The fashion theme for 2016 is most likely going to look like ‘ I’m taking good care of my body and wearing the best clothes in small sizes.’ My clients should expect more unique designs, higher quality fabrics and quicker delivery with the recent improvement in my production line.

What are your other passion(s) outside fashion designing? I’m also in love with creative marketing and construction. I’ve always loved the idea of bringing something to life, bringing many things together to make one beautiful thing by Allah’s grace.

Ogwa Iweze of DZYN by PRISCA EMADU

O Ruqayat Giwa (Covered and Chic) by MULIKATU MUKAILA

C

overed and Chic is a women’s wear label that specialises in making ready-to-wear, bespoke tailoring and bridals that are covered, stylish and fashionable.

How did the fashion industry fare in 2015? The year was good for the fashion industry. It did, however, dipped for us at the end of the year, compared to 2014.

What trends, styles, colours and theme of fashion should we expect in 2015?

In 2015, we saw simpleclassic designs. This year we would see more bold colours with details like ruffles, pleats and bold prints. We would see redder colour and a little suede details, here and there, to replace leather. Although, I think classic colour, like white, used in a crisp way always transcends seasons and would probably stay on. From our brand, you would see tunics that can also be worn as cardigans, dresses with detachable details like ruffles etc.

gwa Iweze is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of DZYN. Her brand makes ready-to-wear couture dresses, tops and trendy attire for the modern city lady. DZYN also makes dresses for bridesmaid, amongst others. She is the daughter of Chief Audu Ogbeh, Nigeria’s minister of agriculture.

How did the fashion industry fare in 2015? The fashion industry witnessed a huge change last year as many designers encouraged people to step out of their comfort zone and

experiment a little more.

What trends are we expecting to see in 2016? Capes will be big in 2016 as seen towards the end of last year, different styles of capes. Colour predictions will be faint greys, monochrome also made a big return last year and we’ll be seeing a lot more this year, burnt orange and different shades of midnight blues to mention a few. Our clients should look out for super chic and feminine pieces, be it girlnext-door, stay-at-home mum, working class. There’ll be a piece every woman will love.

What other passion do you have asides fashion designing? Besides fashion, I enjoy travelling a lot.

What are your other passion(s) outside fashion designing? I had a background in consulting for SMEs. That’s something I still have passion for.

dedoyin Balogun’s love for fashion made him established Baldon Clothiers years ago. The men’s wear brand specialises in making bespoke tailoring shirts, trousers, kaftan, suits, and jacket. How did the fashion industry fare in 2015? Despite the myriad of challenges in the economy in 2015, in my estimation, the fashion industry in Nigeria didn’t do badly, and I foresee this trend continuing in 2016. This is largely because imports may not be sustainable in this present dispensation. Secondly,

because according to the Law of Maslow, clothing forms one of the three core necessities of the very existence of man. Thirdly, the average Nigerian looks for individuality amongst the crowd, hence, an almost insatiable appetite for bespoke pieces.

What trends, (style colours and more) are we expecting to see in 2016? As regards men’s fashion, the kaftan is back and better! This is due to political influences, so we expect to see a lot of that, not leaving out the agbada and dashikis. But this time around they’ll come smarter and more tapered to the body and not as long as in times past. The senator suit, South-south,

Helween by Helwa is a brand that is specialised in making dresses and other exotic styles from soft and silky fabrics. How did fashion fare in 2015? 2015 was good for me. It really favoured my brand. I came up with two collections and it all sold out pretty well. I also launched the Ashoebi collection and Helwa’s bridesmaid’s collection last summer and the bridesmaid’s collection was a huge success. This year we plan to introduce something very colourful and trendy for the young ladies as well as a collection which is very comfortable and classy for mothers. Helween is an epitome of trend and class. We strongly believe in the transformative power of fashion. Our focus remains on simplicity and style.

resource control and etiboh’s which held sway in the last six years will take the back seat. Concerning formal western wear, the traditional suits will remain slim and body fitting worn alongside tapered and slightly ‘jumpy’ trousers. The waistcoat will also feature prominently this year. The colours for men are basic: black, navy blue, grey and brown. But the men are stepping out of the norm and doing bolder colours like red, orange and yellow. For the Baldon brand, we are looking at creating a totally new experience for the client in our soon-to-be opened showroom.

What other passion(s) do you have asides fashion designing? Outside fashion designing

I love motivating younger people and traveling.

I

K-PEN Fashion is based in Abuja. It specialises in making dresses in African fabrics such as aso-oke and Ghana’s kente.

How did the fashion industry fare in 2015?

In 2015, the fashion industry recorded tremendous growth in terms of size and value chain. Before 2015, all we had was a fully developed clothmaking and marketing fashion industry with little happening in the support services. Today, we have fashion photographers, models, dedicated fashion media outlets and, indeed, more fashion schools that are training fashion professionals. This is phenomenal development that has made the fashion industry a major contributor to Nigeria’s GDP.

What trends should we hope to see in 2016? In 2016 we should see colours like yellow, green en which is said to be the new black, iced coffee and king red taking the centre-stage. We would be working creatively with our indigenous African cultural a, fabrics like the aso-oke, Ghana kente, akwa ocha, ign tie and dye, indigo fabric. We are going to design dal and tailor contemporary designs including bridal dresses with these fabrics.

What are your other passions? My other passions outside fashion designing are travelling and collecting unique inexpensive works of art.

CAN SHE BE PREGNANT AT FIFTY? I married my third wife in March last year. She is fifty years old and have her regular period. I will like her to be pregnant, through IVF. What should I do? At fifty, despite the regular menses, natural conception is difficult. I am happy you have already provided the solution in your question. Let her go for IVF.

Irregular periods with candidiasis I had problems with my period recently. It started with irregular period. I’ve done some test and they said its heavy growth of candidiasis. Now, my period has bad smell and it lasts up to a week. After the test I was asked to use vagina tablet but it did not work for me. What do I do next? Sis R.I Candidiasis does not affect menses. Also, it does not affect fertility. Since the menses lasts only seven days, provided you are not changing your pads frequently, it is still normal. Candidiasis is usually a recurrent infection in women but does not affect fertility. See your family physician for proper counselling and treatment.

CAN I SEE MY PERIOD THIS MONTH? I am a young girl married with two kids. My last baby is eight months old. I saw my menses last on the thirteenth of September. I did a pregnancy test and it was positive. Evacuation was done on the thirteenth of October. By the eighteenth of November I had some stains on my underwear till the eight of December. My question is: can I still see my menses normally? You may see it and you may not. I hope when you were spotting you rescan to ensure complete evacuation. But you must bear in mind that sometimes it takes up to four months before menses returns after miscarriage or evacuation. Please, I advise you to go for planning.

Yet I have been unable to get pregnant. Please, help me. Sarah, Benin. It is two ways. It is possible that what caused the damage in the first tube also affected the second tube. Fashion rules to break in 2016 by MULIKATU MUKAILA

W

elcome to 2016! It is expected that this year fashion icons will stand out and be counted with their creative styles. With so many trends emerging every season, it is easy to think that the fashion standards and rules will not be static. If you want to standout in your styles in 2016, here are some rules to follow: 1. When mixing prints, make sure you combine large prints with a smaller or a plain designed fabric. 2. Your handbag should always compliment your outfits as it allows you to create an avenue for playing around with colours. This will add a modern twist to your style as well as an eye-catching appeal. 3. Your fashion accessories such as jewellery should be as simple as it can. If at all it has to be loud, make sure your outfits tones it down. 4. Fabrics that will make you look too loud such as sequin should be for special occasions. 5. Combine bright and dull colours together as well as use one colour all through that will suit your complexion.
