CO V E R // RABI SALISU IBRAHIM Educational Background I attended St Anna’s Nursery and Primary school and also Aminci Model School Kakuri Kaduna . I later proceeded to Challenge International College in Sabon Tasha Kaduna where I graduated in 2000. I enrolled into Kaduna Polytechnic where I bagged my National Diploma in Business Studies and the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Marketing in 2006. Presently, I am undergoing my Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Peace and Conflict Strategic Studies at Kaduna State University (KASU). I am also into Humanitarian services and have an NGO which cater for the need of children, women and orphans. Growing up Growing up was kind of a pathetic because I am from a broken home. I grew up with my mum since I was two years and I am the only child of my mum, but for my dad, we are eight-four boys and four girls. I am the first born of the family. My mom was a caterer; I lived with her in Sabon Tasha while my dad is in Tudun-Wada Kaduna. She was my caretaker right from the age of two till 2002, when I got married. So from childhood, I was a business woman because after school, I went to her restaurant to help her. From the age of six I started working in her restaurants. On a particular day, I may be in one shop and the next I would be in another. When I come back from school with my uniform, I go straight to her restaurant (Dadin Kowa restaurant). I was going to school and combining it with the business. Challenges I faced You know any house that is broken there is psychological trauma and other things. When I was growing up, I saw people living with their parent, I imagined the home being a complete one and always wished and hoped my parents were still together. I always got disturbed when I saw other families, until my mom got married to one Alhaji Ade Suleiman, a Yoruba man. He always represented my dad during PTAs. I was just like his adopted child because he married my mom that is in 1990. He died in 2006. My mum was not educated in the western way but she made sure that I went to school and anytime somebody came to ask for marriage, my y hand in marriag ge, she stood her ground because my father wanted to marry me off after I finished my primary school. He collected my dowry in 1994 and wanted me to marry at the age of 12. But my mum stood for me she said she would not agree

Rabi Salisu Ibrahim is the Chief Executive of Arrida Relief Foundation of Nigeria (ARFON) which provides for widows, orphans and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP’s). Born on 24th March 1982, the energetic wife and mother of four has achieved great heights by simply following the footsteps of her mum. She opened up to Tambari on her personal life and other interesting issues. because I am her only child. My mum was from Tambuwal in Sokoto state, she said she wanted me to have a degree so she will not allow me to get married at the age of 12, so she had to take me out. She took me out of Nigeria just because of that issue. We went to Saudi where we spent three years and by the time we came back the issue of marriage was forgotten. My mum is my backbone I always emulate her in anything I am doing. I attended a missionary school, so I grew up in an enlightened environment where Christians and Muslims live together happily, so going to school was not an option, it was a must. I was taught that even if your husband is doing business, you should not rely on his own; you also have something to cater for your children. I grew up tto o see that h if not for the business my mom was doing, she wouldn’t have the money to send me to school even if she had the ambition. NO MATTER YOUR FAMILY BACKGROUND, GROUND, THAT SHOULD NOT DETER YOU, MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF YOUR LIFE Best gift I have received from him The best gift I received from him is a car on my birthday; it was a green CRV Jeep that was in 2010, two years after we got married. Three fashion accessories I can’t do without Perfume, rings and gowns. My best perfume is End of discussion, it is an Arabian product. I like Gucci, it is an old brand but I like all their product up to now. Best travel destination My best travel destination is Madina because I want to be visiting Prophet (S.W.A), anytime I am there .I have purification of my soul and I feel contented with God and I ask Allah to forgive me and Muslim ummah in our generation and I have rest of mind anytime I’m in Madina. How I relax That is a very difficult question because I do not relax that is why I have constant headache, but I am trying to adjust my program. Now, as you can see I have started relaxing today. I over work myself because of all the jobs I do and the taking care of all the orphans, school and other things. If I have more income I would have taken more staff to be doing somethings. I am doing things that ten people are supposed to do. I am doing my small business aside my motherly duty and my role as a wife. It’s very hectic . Mum’s advice that stuck She advised me to be patient. She said if you patient, you can live with your enemy in peace and with your loved ones too. When you are living close to your enemy, you can change them to be your friend by being good to them. So I ways think about that even if someone is hurting me, I am patient with him m because of that advice she gave me. Best sport My best sport is basketball. Even when I was in secondary school I was in basketball team. Best weather I like cold weather. Preferred car choice I want anything jeep, because of the rural areas I go to. The roads to many places in this country are bad. So, the higher the car, the better. Best colour and why I love green colour because the Prophet (S.W.A) best colour is green and white.

Role models in life I have only one role model in life, which is my mother. Some people saw me as stubborn and they say because of how my mum pampered me I wouldn’t be able to live without her. But she always has it in mind that I can live and even do more than what she did. Because even then she knew what I was going to be, but people did not see it like that. Life’s Lessons Everybody you see in life has talent, it is just that the way you use your talent or the way the talent has used you, in the sense that who is your emulator, who is bringing you up, who is there to bring that talent out for you. So the lesson I have learned is that one should strive to achieve greater heights. No matter your family background, that should not deter you, make something out of your life - just like my mother struggled to make me the woman I am today. So if you don’t have hope, you don’t have future ambition that is what I see that everybody should have a future ambition not only for himself but for his children and generation at large.

Finding the best products for your skin

K

nowing what type of skin you have is simple but very important when figuring out what products you should use to treat and take care of your skin. Knowing your skin type and conditions lets you to develop a routine strictly based on your skin’s preferences and needs. Skin changes with different conditions such as the seasons, the weather and other things of the like. There are four different skin types respectively; normal, oily, dry and combination skin. When you determine the type of skin you have, you can easily choose what products will suit your skin accordingly to keep it smooth, supple and radiant. For oily skin: Use a face wash or cleanser that contains an AHA such as glycolic or salicylic acid to prevent breakouts, or use a gel moisturizer. For very oily skin, stay away from moisturizers and focus on a face wash with salicylic acid. The oil that the skin produces is the best natural moisturizer for your

skin. For dry skin: Dry skin can become very irritated during harmattan. Exfoliation can strip tive. the skin and make it more sensitive. It is best to see a dermatologist to suggest the best products for ar you. Also go for a scrub with sugar crystals and moisturizers with natural oils are best. For normal skin: Use product containing a mild concentration of benzoyl peroxide and a creamy scrub with soft, synthetic beads for exfoliation. A low-strength glycolic wash with a higher PH will also be a good choice. For combination skin: Bearing in mind that most parts of your face are dry, exfoliation is still key as it manages oil production and removes any flaky skin. Another way to balance the oil is to use a face oil. Well-moisturized skin will in turn produce less oil, preventing future breakouts.

ANY ALTERNATIVE TO IVF? I have been married for five years without getting pregnant even once. I have visited hospitals. I did HSG twice when I was told that my tubes were blocked. The last doctor I met took me to the theatre for what he called Laparoscopy, and I was still told the same thing that the two tubes were blocked. I was informed that the only option available is IVF. But the cost mentioned is beyond my reach. Is there no other alternative? Amina, Kaduna Laparoscopy and dye test popularly called Lap & Dye is used to confirm whether tubes were blocked as seen in HSG or not. Also it helps to assess other reproductive organs and look for adhesions. During laparoscopy, in case of bilateral tubal blockage, the tubes will also be assessed to know the possibility of tubal surgery. In time past, prior to the onset of in vitro fertilization, IVF, tubal surgery was the mainstay of managing tubal factor infertility. In well

selected cases, success rate varies from 10 to 25 percent. But with the advent of IVF, the role of tubal surgery is minimal now. Salpingostomy, tubal anastomoses are possible tubal surgeries. These are done better under microscopic view by well experienced tubal surgeons. Despite the advent of IVF, tubal surgery still has a role in our own environment like in this case of yours because of the exorbitant cost of the procedure which makes it difficult to assess

by the average Nigerian. You may need to see a gynaecologist who is versed in tubal surgery. You will need to be assessed to know whether surgical intervention will be feasible or not. It is important to collect the Lap & Dye report. Let me use this opportunity to appeal to the federal government to make the IVF available at Federal Teaching and Specialist Hospitals at affordable cost. This will help put smile on the faces of a lot of couples in this country.

FIBROID OPERATION THE THIRD TIME? I am 42 years old and I have had fibroid operations twice now. Thirteen and four years ago. I had heavy menstrual bleeding last week and I was told I will need another operation. I don’t want another operation. What can I do? Ngozi, Minna How many children do you have? Do you want to have more children? If you have completed your family size, the best would have been Total Abdominal Hysterectomy - TAH. This will solve the problem permanently. But if you are still desirous of more children then you will benefit from Gonadotropin Releasing hormone analogue injection or similar medication. It is a once monthly injection. Take it for three to five months, the fibroid will have reduced

significantly in size and also the menses will ceased during the period and in most cases after stopping when the menses returns, the flow may not be excessive again. But if you are intending to get pregnant soon you may need to remove the fibroids especially since the fibroids are likely to be sub mucous which resulted in the menorrhagia i.e excessive menses. Discuss further with your gynaecologist on other options.

WHICH METHOD OF FAMILY PLANNING? I have five children and carrying the sixth now. I want family planning. Which one will you recommend for me please? Zainab, Jalingo If you have completed your family size, I will recommend postpartum BTL. That is bilateral tubal ligation within 20hours after delivery. You would have discussed with your spouse and the next day after delivery while the uterus (the womb) will still be big and high in the stomach, BTL can be done under local anaesthesia with mild sedation. A very small incision is made

around the umbilicus and with special instrument the tube are accessed and tied. You can go home the same day. Other methods available after delivery include: IUD - intrauterine devices, implanon, the injectables among others but unlike the first that can be done on anybody, these ones require proper assessment of the woman to look at the most suitable.

Please, we encourge all who send questions or contributions to include at least their first name and town or city. Readers are also advised to copy the Tambari email address above while writing in. Thank you - Editor TAMBARI SUNDAY, S E P T E M B E R 11, 2016
