Sustained knowledge keeps you ahead of the game interview by MULIKATU MUKAILA
H
ajiya Zara Ibrahim Musa is a banker. She was born in Kano on Tuesday, September 26, 1967, to the family of the late Alhaji Ibrahim Musa and Hajiya Bintu Ibrahim Musa, former minister of state for education (2003-2005). The first out of 11 children is one of the pioneer members of staff of Jaiz Bank. Hajiya Zara, who has held several positions in the bank, is currently its area manager, business development. She hails from Kumshe town in the Woloji district of Bama Local Government Area of Borno State, and is of the Shuwa Arab descent. She spoke with Tambari about her journey so far.
AS A FIRST CHILD WHO LOST A FATHER AT AN EARLY AGE, I GREW UP SEEING MY MOTHER PLAY THE ROLE OF A MOTHER AND FATHER Abuja area in Jaiz Bank. I am one of the pioneer members of staff who joined the bank when it was a project in 2006. What you aspired to be as a child As a child I just wanted to be a nurse. Seeing the likes of Sister Hamza Zayyad and others in their beautiful and neatly adorned uniforms was an inspiration for me. However, in my final year at the secondary school, during one of our career guidance and counselling sessions, a lady pilot came to speak to us. There and then, I said to myself that I wanted to be a pilot. I am not sure if it was her uniform or the eloquence and confidence she exuded, but she left a lasting impression on me as a teenager to aim higher. Challenges in life As a first child who lost a father at an early age, I grew up seeing my mother play the role of a mother and father. As soon as I graduated from the university, I wasted no time in supporting my mother to ease some of the burdens. However, for me, life was not completely a bed of roses. I have witnessed the deaths of several of my siblings, most especially on February 18, 2014 when eight members of my family died in an inferno. I escaped alive, but my sisters, my nieces and nephews perished in that single incidence. I think part of me also died on that fateful night. I understand that death is inevitable, however, coping with it is difficult. This has made me use every second in my life to be thankful to Allah, by way of striving to be a better citizen, a better human being, and most of all, learning to be a better Muslim.
Educational background I attended the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Staff School, Zaria, from 1973 to 1979, and Shehu Garbai Primary School, Maiduguri in 1979. Before then, I had very brief stints in Magwan Primary School, Kano, where my mum taught and at the Bayero University, Kano (BUK), Staff School, just before my father was transferred from the then Abdullahi Bayero College of Education, Kano (now BUK, to ABU, Zaria in 1973. I am an alumnus of the Federal Government Girls’ College, Bakori, Katsina State, Class of 1984. I read Biological Sciences at the University of Maiduguri, where I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1989. I also attended the Aston Business School (Centre for Executive Programme) Leadership programme. I recently enrolled for the EMSEL Programme at the Harvard University Division of Continuing Education, which I have almost completed. Apart from this, I have attended over 25 other courses at home and abroad, ranging from conventional and Islamic banking to
leadership courses. I am also a member of a few professional bodies, within and outside the country. Career background I have been in the banking sector all of my professional life. I have served and handled different roles in different capacities in a number of banks, including the defunct Premier Commercial Bank Plc and the FSB International Bank Plc (now Fidelity Bank Plc). I am currently the Area Manager, Business Development,
Best part of your job There is no job that doesn’t have its own brand of challenges that will sometimes favour you or even frustrate you. What is important is for you to stay focused on your career goals and the goals of your organisation. As bankers, our responsibility is more about providing excellent customer service. For me, the best part is ensuring that the customer leaves highly satisfied. So far, I have tried to be a good employee and offer great service to my clients. Fond memories There are so many fond memories. There were so many fun times; it is difficult to pick any out. However, seeing my siblings, particularly the young ones growing up to live their dreams has been one of my fondest memories.
ON FEBRUARY 18, 2014 WHEN EIGHT MEMBERS OF MY FAMILY DIED IN AN INFERNO. I ESCAPED ALIVE, BUT MY SISTERS, MY NIECES AND NEPHEWS PERISHED IN THAT SINGLE INCIDENCE. TAMBARI SUNDAY, O C TO B E R 16, 2016
ZARA IBRAHIM MUSA // Joys of motherhood As a single mother, a biological mother to one and adoptive to two (left behind by my late sister), or as my relatives will say, to so many children, nothing compares to it. I see myself assuming the role of both a mother, and to some extent, that of a father. Can men assume these two roles in parenting, like most women do nowadays? I doubt. Balancing career and the home front Being a banker, it is not easy to balance career and the home front. You can, however, use certain approaches you use at work to help ease some of the challenges. Some of them include planning, setting limits, communicating, delegating and building a support network. My mother, siblings and a few other close relatives have been a strong support system for me. They have assisted me tremendously. Role models They are many. I might disappoint you in this case because you will not hear names of prominent personalities. My number one role models are my parents. Up till now, I am trying to fit into their very large shoes. Next on line are the women in my family. My paternal and maternal aunties, including our family friends, have been, and are still providing me with plenty to emulate, shaping me to what I am today. Their strength and comportment, and the way they handle situations, never cease to amaze me. The women of Borno (current Borno and Yobe states) are a phenomenal breed. Despite the struggles and difficulties they go through, they don’t allow the impact to dictate for them. These are my models. Mode of relaxation I think I have a reputation for being quiet, reserved and strictly private. Most times I am in my room, which is where I set aside some “me time” daily to relax and reflect. Favourite holiday spots Real holiday? My room, my home; with my family. Definition of style Mix

A chat with fragrance professional Habiba Sanusi by HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU
Habiba Sanusi is the young lady behind BeeLoved Fragrances; Bespoke Perfumery. The entrepreneur talked about how her business made it this far and what inspired her to start her own perfume line. Educational Background
I
attended American InterContinental University, London Alumni where I studied Communications and Media, Walden University where I studied Leadership and Entrepreneurship and The Cotsworld Perfumery where I got my Perfumery Certification. Difference brand has made to the industry BeeLoved Fragrances was established on ethos such as ideas, dream, self-reliance and development. These are of-course examples of business foundations where one infuses their knowledge and expertise to develop and establish. Perfumery is a long established industry from the Egyptians and Greeks, to the French
Luxurious 19th Century and Coco Chanel, till date, however, it is one niche not many have realised although many nurse the idea of having a perfume made specifically for them but, many scented options exists on the market to please the various olfactories. Through my work, I have had the pleasure of designing fragrances per tastes and styles and also acquired a mission; highlighting Sickle Cell Anemia/ Disease in our society and health awareness. Through my work, I am able to segment a social commitment towards this cause with support to the Samira Sanusi Sickle Cell Foundation. Challenges They exist on every plain without which there won’t be growth. Challenges come in the forms of
resource reach, management, unstable economy and what have we, but we plough through by being consistent to maintain sustainability of the brand and its values. Establishment of Beeloved fragrances BeeLoved Fragrances was established in 2009 slowly developing its concepts through the years but has officially launched a store in the past year. Why this business? I have always been into perfumery from a young age and I grew up in a culture rich in perfume use; body and home, turarenwuta (traditional incense) and humrah (traditional body cologne). I like scents and I quickly realised that my olfactory sense is super sensitive; which
is what a perfumer needs to understand foremost. Business in the next 5 years Where we are right now, but bigger and better in all our functions. Expansion plan Yes. Our webstore has just been launched this past weekend; www.beelovedfragrances.com to expand our reach to the digital market. In the nearest future, multi-product lines will go beyond fragrances, we will have various perfumery products ranging from body to home and spaces. Anyone aspiring to start a business like mine, or any other can begin with one solid idea; work on it, take time to develop and materialize with a humble start. Have faith.

CAN I FREQUENT STOP THE ASTHMATIC DRUG? ATTACK I was having excessive menstrual flow and was given family planning pills seven months ago. The menstruation is normal now. Can I stop it? Amina, Kaduna
CAN A CERVICAL CANCER PATIENT BE OPERATED AT 75 YEARS?
The family planning pills - combine oral contraceptive pills (COCP) is not only used for family planning but also for conditions like excessive menstrual period and dysfunctional uterine bleeding (DUB). Since the menses is normal now you can stop it. But if you are still using it as a form of contraception you may continue the medication. Let me use this opportunity to implore Nigerians who don’t always go for follow up. It’s most likely if you had gone for follow up clinic the doctor might have asked you to stop it. The culture of getting better and not going for follow up could be detrimental.
My mother is seventy five years old and diagnosed with early stage of cervical cancer. The doctor recommended her for operation but we (family members) are skeptical. Can she withstand a major surgery at that age? Please advise us what do we do? Madam Tinuke, Ilorin Let me state clearly that the best person to recommend the appropriate treatment is the expert who not only made the diagnosis but has the benefit of physical assessment of the patient. For early stage cervical cancer, the treatment options available are surgical and radiotherapy. Either method has good prognosis. The choice of treatment depend on several factors, though experts oncology surgeons are readily available than radiotherapy centers in Nigeria. Where financial constraints and distance to nearest radiotherapy centre is far then surgery might be preferable especially for early cancer. Another favored is the state of health of the patient. Can the patient condition withstand radical hysterectomy needed in
early stage cervical cancer? Concerning Your mum, who is seventy five years old, sometimes a person of that age may be in better state of health than a fifty-five-year old. So if the doctor who assessed is a Gynaecologist, and feels she can withstand the operation then let him go ahead. In case you are still not comfortable you may ask for referral to a centre that can offer radiotherapy. There are teaching hospitals with good radiotherapy centre in the southwest and middle belt region which are not too far from Ilorin. What I will not advise is for you to just take her home because if it becomes an advanced stage of cervical cancer the effects could be unbearable and then difficult to manage.
Please, we encourge all who send questions or contributions to include at least their first name and town or city. Readers are also advised to copy the Tambari email address above while writing in. Thank you - Editor TAMBARI SUNDAY, O C TO B E R 16, 2016
I am twenty five years old and have been on drugs for asthma for the past eight years. In the last three months I have had several attacks and now I am been treated for pneumonia. What can I do to reduce this frequent attacks? Is there no cure for asthma? Roseline, Abuja Asthma is a chronic lung disease resulting from inflammation of the airways that makes breathing difficult. It affects all age groups both female and male. It is allergic and usually starts from childhood. It affects millions of people worldwide and causes death in thousands of people annually. Unfortunately asthma has no cure but it can be managed effectively. Predisposing factors include: airborne substances like dust and smoke, infections like common cold, cold air which explains the increase of incidences you have been having in the last three months. Other factors include emotional stress, drugs like aspirin and beta blockers. There is genetic factors that is it may run in family. Symptoms and signs includes difficulty in breathing, wheezing, cough, breathlessness and chest tightness. Early recognition of symptoms and treatment helps to prevent severe asthma which can be catastrophic if not promptly and well managed. My advice is to avoid the avoidable risk factors like dust smoke or other identifiable risk factors. Also the use of inhaler at onset of symptoms early enough, treatment of infections early enough. You should avoid over exposure to cold and regular attendance of respiratory clinics. Do not wait until asthma attack before going to hospital. Cooperate with your doctor in preventive steps. Do not be afraid. Though asthma is not curable but it is manageable. Some with proper steps has avoided attacks for years. Though it starts in childhood, they do live to old age.

his colourful and delicious meal is something you can eat independently or mix with either rice or pastas. It is also a healthy diet meal any one can hold on to. Ingredients • 225g cleaned squid • 150g raw, peeled prawns • 6 scallops • 150g sliced bamboo shoots • 150g sliced water chestnuts • ½ an egg white • ½ tsp salt • 1 tbsp cornflour paste • 300ml oil • ½ tsp finely chopped fresh
ginger • 2 spring onions cut into short sections • 2 tbsp black bean and garlic sauce • 2 sticks of celery thinly sliced diagonally • 1 carrot thinly sliced diagonally • ½ tsp sugar • 1 tbsp rice wine • ½ tsp sesame oil Method 1. Open up the squid and score the inside of the flesh in a criss-cross pattern, then cut the squid into diamond shaped pieces. Cut the prawns in half lengthways and cut
each scallop into about 3 or 4 slices. 2. Mix the prawns and scallops with a pinch of salt, the egg white and about half the corn flour paste. Heat the oil in a preheated wok until it’s medium hot. Add the seafood for about 30 seconds then remove and drain. 3. Pour out the excess oil, leaving around 2 tablespoons of oil in the wok. Stir fry the ginger and the spring onions with the black bean and garlic sauce over a low heat for about 30 seconds or until
fragrant. 4. Turn the heat up high again and add the vegetables to be stir fried for about 2 minutes. Return the seafood to the wok with the remaining salt, sugar and wine. Blend well and add a little water stirring constantly. 5. When the juices start to bubble, thicken it with the remaining corn flour paste. Sprinkle on sesame oil and serve hot. BODY HAIR SKIN
It’s time to say bye to blackheads by MULIKATU MUKAILA
B
lackheads are small bumps that appear on your skin due to clogged hair follicles. There are also mild types of acne that usually form on the face, but can also appear on the back, chest, neck, arms and shoulders. Blackheads form when a clog or plug develops in the opening of hair follicles in your skin. When the skin over the bump opens, exposure to the air causes it to look black and a blackhead forms. Some factors can also increase your chances of developing acne and blackheads, including: • producing too much body oil • build-up of bacteria on the skin • irritation of the hair follicles when dead skin cells don’t shed on a regular basis. • undergoing hormonal changes that cause an increase in oil production during the teen years, during menstruation, or while taking birth control pills.
• taking certain drugs that could give reaction to the skin. HOW TO PREVENT IT 1. Wash your face when you wake up and before you go o to bed to remove oil buildup that can cause blackheads. Washing more than twice each day can irritate your skin and make your acne worse. 2. Any product that contains oil can contribute to new blackheads. Choose oose oil-free makeup, lotions and sunscreens to avoid making your problem worse. 3. Exfoliating scrubs and masks remove dead skin cells from your face and can help reduce blackheads. Look for products that don’t irritate your skin.

HAIR CARE
with MULIKATU MUKAILA
Natural ways to eliminate blackheads 1. Make exfoliation part of your weekly routine. For example use especially for oily skin and getting rid of blackheads. Nutmeg helps get rid of the oil, offers the scrubby power, and leaves behind really smooth skin. The lactic acid in milk helps break down old skin cells so they disappear when you rinse your face. If you really want to take it up a notch, use buttermilk instead of regular milk. 2. Do a honey pat: Your honey should be very, very sticky if you want this to be as effective as possible. Simply pour a small amount of honey on your fingers and start rapidly patting the areas on
your face where you want to remove blackheads. rti ting g 3. Use egg white: Starting d with a clean face, spread egg white all over using your fingers or a paintbrush. Start first with one thin layer and let it dry briefly. Then spread a second layer over the top and let the whole thing dry completely.
