years and are into other businesses as partners. Halima is an indigene of Borno state while Hajara hails from Kaduna. They gave us an insight into having a business together, being a team, the challenges they face as business women, fashion, leisure and more.

Halima with Hajara’s son, and Hajara The journey of the food business I and my friend have been in business together before going into the restaurant business. We both realized at some point that we both have more ideas than we were doing, and we felt if we do business together it would be stronger and bigger. So we decided to come up with a business and that was how the restaurant idea came about. Running a restaurant is something we have not done before. Career background We started this business three years ago in food city, Wuse 2. We ran the business from there before we decided on getting a bigger place with a better environment. When we saw the property we occupy today, we both decided that instead of building just one restaurant, we could build a food court, so that there will be other businesses thriving here too. We are also into property development, finishing and other side businesses. The restaurant is not our main business but part of our business chain. Being partners Most of the time we agreed on a lot of things. Whatever idea she brings I see the reason and light in it, and vice versa. We realised that and have worked together before the restaurant business which we both succeeded in. We knew that working together was not going to be a problem. More so there is trust between us 100%; which is an major ingredient in any relationship in life. The trust between us is the base modulation of our business. Challenges We have been in business together for about nine years and we have been friends for 15 years. bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bv bvThere are challenges in running every business but when you give it your all, have passion

WE BOTH HAVE UNDERSTANDING HUSBANDS WHO HAVE ALWAYS SUPPORTED US ALL THROUGH THE JOURNEY. AND WE APPRECIATE THEM FOR THAT. for it and focus on what you are doing, then that is the pathway to success. We have challenges of staff, we don’t really have management issues because we manage our business ourselves, even though we have a very good manager, we are still very much involved in the management of the business. We give our staff training and have direct contact with them, so that we would be able to handle some of their challenges. Dealing with humans is a basic challenge in life, but aside that challenge, we are recently facing issues in running the business as a result of the dollar hike. Aspirations growing up Hajara: I wanted to be a banker but when I grew up I found out it was a bit challenging. But I have always wanted to be a business woman because my mum was a business woman and she persuaded me to have a business of my own. I also wanted to be a property developer. Halima: I wanted to be a lawyer but fate changed that. I studied economics, apparently that would make me a business woman. I touched a bit of other things but I knew I wasn’t doing what I wanted to do; there are times you want to do something but you don’t know what it is. When we met, we started talking about ideas and I realised I have found what I was looking for. I just needed someone that we could rub minds together, and I realized I was a good business woman. She always says I am a good negotiator; we are good business people. What is your typical day like? First of all we are mothers, married and have

homes. We take care of the home first before coming out; we make sure everything is in order. We check all our sites that we are working on. We do all our rounds at home and then come to the restaurant, which we run as well. Our office is here in the restaurant; we run other businesses from here, when we are done for the day we go back home. We both have understanding husbands who have always supported us all through the journey. And we appreciate them for that. Favourite fashion designer We have a young lady coming up in Kano. Her name is Amama, she is the owner of ‘Moon by me’. She is really good and we think she can do better. Favourite sport Halima: I love watching basketball and I used to play it in school. Also as a child I loved football. When there is basketball match on television, I still stop to see what is going on. I also love long walks in the evenings. Favourite colour We love red; our logo has red in it. Favourite weather We love the rainy season, and December season because then the weather is fair, not too hot or cold. Best food Halima: I love sweet things, so I prefer desserts to food, I love cake. I also love lamb chops and mashed potatoes and Chinese foods.

Halima

Hajara Three must have fashion accessories Make up, jewelries and handbags. How do you relax? We only relax when we travel. We try to have fun and immediately we get to the airport, it is back to work. Life’s lessons Life has thought me a lot. We have been in business for a long time, and if there is one thing we have learnt, it is to be patient with people, and to be focused on what you are doing, which is the most important thing. When you are focused you know where you are going to, your aim, don’t allow anyone distract you. Another thing is having a good management team and to be strict on it. One has to be hardworking and keep pushing on. Best travel destination Hajara: I love Dubai because they have almost everything we need. I also love the United States of America. Halima: I love beaches, so anywhere that has water I can visit there, be it Dubai or Senegal. Style definition Hajara: I believe style is about being yourself. A lot of people may try to be you but can’t be you because they don’t have it in them, and I don’t struggle to look good. Halima: I am more of the simple one, I define style as comfort. I like to

I GO ON DIET BUT SOMETIMES I BREAK THE ROUTINE. I DON’T EAT CARBOHYDRATE AT NIGHT. be comfortable and don’t like tight clothes. I also love my long gowns because they make me comfortable and happy. Favourite day of the week Halima: I love Mondays because they are a new beginning and I look forward to what the day holds because it is the beginning of the week and the brain never stops working. Hajara: I love Fridays. Beauty routine Hajara: Beauty is from the inside, I love make up a lot, when I attend weddings and I see someone looking pale, I don’t mind offering to give the person make up. I love to pamper myself so I visit the spa a lot. We were in Kano recently and we drove from there straight to a massage house in Abuja.

Halima: I go on diet but sometimes I break the routine. I don’t eat carbohydrate at night. Life achievements We believe that you are not successful until you help others and that is our greatest achievement. As we grow we try to help others, it isn’t something that should be said to the world, but that should be between yourself and God. Whatever we have and do comes down to helping people. Role models A role model is every woman that gets up to make something out of her life because we are in a man’s world, so for you to get up and make a difference you are a role model to every other woman. At times we look at each other and we serve as role models for each other, because there are times one of us is down and the other will push on with encouragement. I would tell a younger me Looking at us when we were younger, I would say everything in life is a lesson; every step or milestone is a lesson. I don’t believe there is anything we could have changed; maybe we could have started earlier but maybe it is just our destiny and everything happens for a reason. There are no regrets. Advice for women who want to go into the food industry The advice for women generally

is for them not to give up. Get up no matter what. We are in a society where the women like to lean on the men, but even the men need our support. Get up and do something; take care of yourself and let him take care of the family. Taking care of your own needs is something and in the process you will see he is growing higher. Women should be independent and get up doing something, no matter how little. For women who want to go into the food industry, it is a very good business yet very challenging; people think it is a money making business. Yes it is, but you have to give it your all and don’t compromise the success of the business at all. One important point to note which is a general advice for all businesses is; pay your staff on time because it is their sweat; they worked for you and need to be paid. Another secret to business success is try to give, share, no matter how little. Mum’s advice that stuck To always have faith, believe in God and know that whatever happens to you is destined by God. To be prayerful, be mindful of others, and work hard and to be fair in whatever you are doing. We think basically that is what every mother will tell her child.

uring hot or rainy days, it can be quite challenging to keep cool outside, before deciding to head back indoors. With your backyard or garden equipped with an umbrella or gazebo which gives little shade during the hottest days and also drizzling days, these help keep you staying out there for a long period of time and enjoying the serenity of the space. Having them at your garden not only provides shade from the warm sun but also help in keeping your outdoor space cool and comfortable. With these your compound also gets to be inviting. You will be amazed at the glamour a simple umbrella and gazebo can add to your outdoor space.

ne core rule every styles concerns man should put into consideration before wearing an outfit is physique. The statures of Mr A and Mr B differ, hence what would look fab on Mr A may look dap on Mr B. hen Just as a woman would consider her body size and stature before wearing a fish tail gown, a man also must put into befo consideration some things before wearing an outfit. con - If you are a man endowed with a pot belly, it is best to stay clear of clothes that are fitted. Wearing fitted clothes will protrude your stomach, making the outfit lose shape and an d style. No man wants his protruding stomach to be the first thing anyone notice. - A man with a small stature should be mindful of free clothes, like a big shirt. This kind of outfit would just make you look like someone lost in an island. - Mind your stature, like your shoulder, waist and chest, before you sew some styles. A fitted suit or shirt would look good on a man with broad chest and shoulders. A tucked in shirt would look glam on a man with a small waist. - Skinny trousers are a big NO for a man who is too big or too small. The aim of the outfit would be defeated if the thighs are like they want to burst out, and the thin thighs would be unattractive to the sight too. It is best to look good and comfortable in what you wear because looking good is good business. So take the pledge today to dress in accordance to your physique.

CAN I TAKE MEDICATION IN PREGNANCY? I am three months pregnant and my doctor prescribed Augmentin for me. Is it safe in pregnancy? Should I take it? Will it affect my baby? Shade, Abuja Augmentin is an antibiotic containing amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. It is safe in pregnancy. There must be a good reason for your doctor have to prescribed it for you. I will advise you to follow your doctor’s advise and recommendations.

WHAT IS FOLLICULAR TRACKING Please what is follicular tracking? My doctor asked I do it. Amina, Lokoja Follicular tracking is done to monitor the growth of the follicles. It is the follicles that contains the egg. After preliminary scan, the flollicular tracking could be started on day 8 of the menstrual cycle. It could be varried based on menstrual cycle length. The next one could be on day ten to twelve while the last one could be after ovulation time like twentieth to twenty second day to verify whether there were ovulation or not. This ultrasound could be abdominal or tranvagina. But the transvaginal could give better assessment. Flollicular tracking is done in normal cycle to find out whether there is spontaneous ovulation or not. Also it is used to monitor follicular development during fertility treatment either with tablet or injections. I will suggest you go ahead and do it.

RASHES ON MY BODY I noticed some rashes on my body and around my private part. What do I do? Aliyu, Kano Are rashes all over your body? How do they look like? Do you have history of allergy? Any associated itching? Usually it is better to have a direct assessment of rashes which will help one to make diagnosis. Since it appears to be generalized then it is likely due to an allergic reaction or systemic cause. If there is associated itching then the use of calamine lotion at night may be necessary. In case of rashes limited to the private part may signify sexually transmitted disease. In that case you and your spouse must be treated Meanwhile go and see your family physician for assessment and treatment.

ANY ALTERNATIVE TO HSG What other options are available for me instead of HSG. I learnt that it is painful and I can’t not bear pains. Ngozi, Ilorin Hysterosalpingograph known as HSG, is a common investigation for infertility to determine the tubal patency. Other indication include cases of Asherman’s syndromes in which case the woman may be having reduced menstrual flow. It is also useful in diagnosing abnormalities of the uterus among other uses. It is true that it could be painful but analgesics are available. Alternative to this could be hysterosalpingograph. In this case the dye passage through the tubes is monitored on ultrasound. Another option is Laporoscopy and dye test which is actually complimentary but in some cases one could go staring for Lap and Dye. I will suggest you psychologically prepare your mind to do it. I have seen several women who were initially so scared like you but after making up their mind came back to tell that it wasn’t as terrible as they were made to believe. Some do not even take any analgesics after the test. So many are doing it daily so why can’t you? Of can you can.

Please, kindly include your full name and where you are writing from when sending your questions. Thank you.

Johnson Johnson unveils ‘The Legacy’ Maki Oh releases 2016 fall collection tagged ‘Ehn’

B

rand name Maki Oh showcases a new and classic look for the 2016 fall. The collection was made with the Nigerian traditional adire and designed into a modern, geometric design. The theme for the collection is ‘Ehn’ (Do you understand?) and expresses a whole different design on the traditional adire sewn into classic pieces. Some of the styles unveiled by the brand are, shoulder dresses, tulle details, lush fabric mix and studded camo. Other designs are ruffles as peplum on blouses paired with flared pants that are studded with flare hem and more. The brand through an Instagram post wrote, “‘Ehn’ — ‘Do you understand?’ Maki Oh’sfall 2016 collection is a foray into womanism through the linguistic variations of the Nigerian word ‘ehn’. A simple expression that carries a multitude of meanings depending on intonation, ‘ehn’ contains several dimensions that are not immediately obvious in its three letters. The complexity of this word is mirrored in the complexity of being a black African woman in the world today. Despite selfimposed affirmations of being queens and being ‘magic’, when a black woman wakes up in the

morning and draws breath, what immediately ensues is the daily fight against the external push to limit her dimensions. Maki Oh created the fall 2016 collection with this resistance in mind, culminating in a celebratory acceptance of this existence, with all its denied but intrinsic beauty and nuance.”

BODY HAIR SKIN

Caring for your hair this season by PRISCA EKOKUJE -EMADU

T

he hair is every woman’s glory, hence should be given much attention as any other part of the body. Variety, they say, is the spice of life, just as people are unique and different, so are their choices of hair style. There are different ways to styling the hair, some go for low cut or add hair attachments, extensions like weave-ons, and others choose to braid or simply tie their hair. But even amidst these many choices, caring for the hair is very vital. Here are tips on how to care for your hair: - Be it low cut or full hair, the hair must be washed often, a smelling hair can turn off any individual just as mouth odour will. So use good hair shampoo to wash your hair and style as desired. - Carrying braids can be very dicey, especially when you sweat on the scalp. There are times when you have just made the hair but not having a favourable weather, causes the hair to smell. That is not a

problem; you can wash your braids too, or simply use cotton wool and spirit to clean the scalp. - When you add hair extensions, don’t carry them for too long, because your own hair will accumulate dirt that could lead to your scalp itching. If you have hair extensions on, ensure you comb, oil and style, so that you have a tangle-free and attractive hair. - Mind hair products; not all chemicals go well with your hair. Know your type off hair and choose the right hair product. - If you tie or wrap your hair with a head cover, when you get the chance to, free your hair because the hair needs air to look fresh ause and healthy. Wash your hair often because tying of the hair can easily accumulate sweat. - Eat right; every part of the body will function well with the right diet. This can also be attributed to the hair. - Drink lots of water. - Visit the saloon, to get pro professional care to your hair.

DO YOU KNOW... .. THAT BRUSHING YOUR HAIR STIMULATES THE FOLLICLES WHICH PROMOTE GROWTH, BUT BRUSHING TOO MUCH AND TOO OFTEN, WILL CAUSE DAMAGE TO YOUR HAIR STRANDS THAT RESULTS IN FRIZZ AND SPLIT ENDS?
