NGOZI CHIANAKWALAM // Choosing a profession As a child, because my father was a lawyer who later became a judge of the high court and my mum was a fashion designer, I wanted to be a fashion designer or lawyer when I grew up. Eventually, I chose to be a lawyer. I am also a fashion designer as well because all of us in the house, including the boys, knew how to sew. We were seven children, four boys and three girls. I was the first in the family. I liked to play a lot and also liked to study fashion designing because my mum had a fashion school with a lot of students. So after school, I used to carry my kit and joined them and far better than the students. My mum used to tell them, ‘my daughter is doing better than you all.’ I loved to watch my dad doing his work as well. I watched him reading and preparing his cases. I also loved to read a lot, the library was quite functional, unlike nowadays. Role model as a child If I tell you who my role models were, you will laugh. The film stars. I love performing arts. So, I used to admire most of them. But then, you dare not mention it to your parents that you wanted to be one. So even if you had the talent, you suppress it. First day in court On my first day in court I was quite nervous. I started my NYSC in the ministry of justice and my boss gave me a file to go to a court and argue a motion. I was so nervous. And he aked, ‘is it not the same law books I read in school that you read’? So, I went to court. When they hit the board that the judge was coming, I was jittery, but when I watched what they were doing, I became more relaxed and carried on with the job. Climbing through the ladder It is memorable and significant. I started in the Imo State Ministry of Justice in 1979. I rose through the ranks, mostly in prosecution. I was in prosecution at the early stages of my career. When Abia State was created in 1991, I was already a deputy director. When we went to Abia State I became the pioneer director of public prosecution of the state from 1991 to 1999. Then, in 1999, I was appointed the solicitorgeneral of Abia State. In 2001, I left the state’s service and joined the federal service, precisely the Cooperate Affairs Commission (CAC). I was the director of registry there for about six years and I voluntarily left the service because I needed to do something different. I got this appointment in 2013. It is quite challenging, we face the challenges one after the other. The

CO V E R I N T E R V I E W

cases are quite intricate. One of the main challenges we had is funding. When I assumed office, we virtually had nothing to run the organisation with. The government’s fund wasn’t adequate and there has been a call for more funding from the capital market, just like the Security Exchange Commission (SEC). Our mandate Our mandate is to adjudicate in capital market cases. These cases include those that arise from the capital market, like issues of stocks and shares, S E C, e.t.c. Any dispute that arises from the operations of the capital market is what we handle. It is a specialised court. Matters concerning the capital market need to be settled in a timely manner because of the volatile nature of the

market. In the regular court, your case can linger for years. But we have a mandate to deliver judgment in our cases within 90 days i.e. three months. We cannot adjourn within that period. Combining job and family matters Right now, I can say I have overcome that stage of my life. During the years when I was in the ministry of justice, that was when I had to juggle with the home runs. But now, all my children are grown up. But even then, I always made sure I had time with my children and even if I had house-helps, once I’m home, I take over and do most of the things myself. I always advice working mothers to make sure your children are close to you, make sure you supervise them and pay attention to them, especially in the evening. I keep telling people, before a child is five years old is when the character of that child is formed. So, do whatever you have to do and make sure the first five years you mould their character and give them the proper foundation they need in life. That is my philosophy. I think my greatest achievement in life is having God’s blessings. How I relax I like gardening and I am also a member of the IBB Golf Club. I play golf when time permits and I also like to go out to watch some movies over the weekend. I go to the cinema to watch shows. Grooming tips kept over time I think the most fundamental thing is the state of your mind. Once you create a peaceful environment around you, it permeates you and fills you. Then, having a youthful disposition, drinking a lot of water, healthy food, exercising helps you a lot. Don’t allow things to worry you so much. Fashion icon My fashion icons are Angelina Jolie and Omotola Jolade. I like modest but tasteful dressing. My designer in Abuja is Atampa. Other passions I love the entertainment world. I also have the passion to groom youths who have the talents. I like to nurture our youth and, if possible, sponsor them. Some parents don’t know this but if it is in abroad, if you notice your child’s talent at a very young age, you encourage the child. But here we tend to be ignorant sometimes. Happiest moment My happiest moment was when I had my first baby. I have three girls and none of them is taking after me in the

I love women who are versatile and knowledgeable. I love women with strength of character. Develop yourself by reading and the more you read, it shows in your presentation. And I like women who are not petty. Favourite books I don’t have favourite books. I read any books. National development books, historical books, philosophical books, biography and biographies books. Definition of success I believe success is mainly derived from contentment. If you feel content with the way you are, what you have, that is the highest success. But if you continue to feel that, maybe, you are not rich enough, not this, not that, you will stress yourself. But when you are content with the way you are, It’s the highest achievement. Traits women should have to be successful Study always because every day you will learn something new. And I think they should attend workshops and seminars, whether they are relevant to what they are doing or not, such workshops could impact on what you are doing.

Greatest lesson I have learnt in life My greatest lesson is to love every being around me. Show love to every being created by God. Once you have a pure mind, you will accept God’s creation. Legacy At the end of my tenure as the chief judge of the Investments and Securities Tribunal, I want to be remembered for one thing: I came, I improved on what I saw on the ground and I left the place far better than I met it. That will be my greatest achievement. Lessons for younger generation should learn In our society now, one great problem I see is the loss of values. If the youth of tomorrow are able to imbibe good values, I believe the country will grow into a better place. And those good

values start from the home. That is why I always talk to the youth and also the parents. Parents should teach their children good values. You need to learn to caution your children. Children should learn to say thank you, great, show gratitude and respect to elders. So, I will like to tell the youth to practice those things. If they don’t learn them at home, they should in school. Try and learn good things on your own and imbibe them. Advice for younger women Make sure you cook for your children, family and do the house’s chores so that your daughters will learn from you. Being fulfilled I am fulfilled because I am always grateful to God.

I ADMIRE WOMEN WHO ARE HARD WORKING, WHO DON’T SHY AWAY FROM RESPONSIBILITIES. I LOVE WOMEN WHO ARE VERSATILE AND KNOWLEDGEABLE. I LOVE WOMEN WITH STRENGTH OF CHARACTER. DEVELOP YOURSELF BY READING AND THE MORE YOU READ, IT SHOWS IN YOUR PRESENTATION. AND I LIKE WOMEN WHO W ARE NOT PETTY.

THE BEAUTY OF DURBAR CELEBRATION

(Hawan sallah) by IBRAHIM MUSA GIGINYU

S

allah Durbar has been one of the most cherished traditions in Kano State. As an annual celebration, it is an event that showcases the rich cultural heritage of the people of Kano State. It is usually a season of displaying affluence and adorable royal regalia of different colours. For the citizens of Kano, Sallah Durbar Festival is seen as a period of showing love and loyalty to their traditional leaders. They usually come out, in thousands, to pay homage to the custodians of their rich heritage. Sallah Durbar is a practice that dates back to over 6oo years. For decades, the event is celebrated in several

cities of the North and other sub-Sahara African countries. In most cases, the festival is celebrated after the Muslim fasting period which usually lasts for 29 or 30 days. Natives of the area living far and beyond the shores of Nigeria usually come home to witness the durbar every year as a way of connecting to their roots. However, for four years now, the people of Kano State have been robbed of the pleasure of witnessing Sallah durbar celebrations due to the security challenges experienced in the ancient city. It is widely expected that next week the people of Kano State will witness the great Sallah durbar celebrations.

P I C S BY: S A N I M A I K ATA N G A

RECURRENT STOMACH PAINS

Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada - FCT. MOBILE: 0803 803 9182 EMAIL: nadewole2013@gmail.com

My stomach aches me alot by the right side, I have taken several medications and done a radiological test(scanning) yet the pain persists. Please can you give me some advice? Fatyma, Kano state.

I

s it at the upper part on the right side or the lower part. In case it is on the right lower side, it could be recurrent subacute appendicitis. If it is on the upper part on the right side, peptic ulcer disease is a possibility. Unfortunately the basis of diagnosis of these is more of clinical diagnosis. Scanning does not help much except in case of acutely inflamed appendix in an experienced hand. It is unfortunate what we have now, where people do tests and scanning without proper assessment. Once scan says there is nothing seen a number of people took this as sacrosanct which has led to delayed diagnosis with sometimes dire

complications. Quite a number of patients with subacute appendicitis who did scan mostly with inexperienced “scanners” or even quacks have led to ruptured appendix later because it has been missed several times earlier and suppressed with analgesics. You must also note that there are several other possibility apart from the above. Endometriosis has to be ruled out, though this is associated with pains during menstruation. I will advise you to see a consultant surgeon or physician for proper assessment. Since you are in Kano, Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital is an option.

IRREGULAR MENSES AT FIFTY SIX? I am fifty six year old and still seeing my menses though irregular, is it normal? Aisha Bauchi.

A

t fifty six you should have reached your menopause. There are conditions that may make you have irregular bleeding at this age these include: cervical cancer, cervical polyps, endometrial hyperplasia, endometrial cancer, hormone producing ovarian tumours among others. You need to see a gynaecologist for examination and investigations. Speculum examination can reveal a lot, also papsmear for cytological studies and if necessary endometrial

biopsy. We had a case last year in which a fifty four year old had similar symptoms, she was taken to theatre for examination under anaesthesia where endometrial biopsy was taken and after histology she was discovered to have endometrial cancer for which she was appropriately treated and stable now. I will advise you see a gynaecologist as soon as possible.

GROWTH BETWEEN MY PRIVATE PART AND ANUS

There is something growing between the space of my private area and anus. It started last year and I didn’t take it serious but is seriously increasing in size. I don’t know what to do. Anonymous One has to see it before one can make a reasonable diagnosis. But from your description, genital warts is a possibility. It is a viral infection caused by human papilloma virus. It is sexually transmitted infection. Application for things like podophylline will take care of it but it should be done with care because it can burn normal skin. I will suggest you see a gynaecologist.

PEPPERISH FEELING AFTER URINATION Good evening sir, thanks for your advices on your column. Help me out. I feel pepperish around my private area after I urinate. What could that be? Anonymous female reader Urinary tract infection is a possibility. Go and see your family physician. He may ask you to do midstream urine for microscopy, culture and sensitivity after which antibiotics will be given as appropriate.

Garlicky PRAWNS

“Shallots are for babies; Onions are for men; Garlic is for heroes. – Unknown. The word “prawns” alone brings a higher level of class to this dish. This is one for the fish lovers who can tolerate the over-powering after taste of garlic. Garlic is for heroes – oh yeah! This is one harmonious dish for those who like to step up to a challenge in style. “Challenge” and “Style” – Need I say more?

INGREDIENTS USED IN THE GARLICKY PRAWNS PRAWNS: First of all let’s take this moment to say a little prayer for all the prawns that have gone to fish heaven. This beauty is a major ingredient used in different cultures. The Chinese could be said to over-indulge in consumption of prawns as this is a very common ingredient in their delicacies. In Nigeria, prawns are often substituted for periwinkle in some Nigerian dishes. The selenium found in prawns help to prevent the growth of cancers in the body. If you didn’t know, prawns fall in to the fish/seafood category (we just blew your mind)! This makes it a rich source of protein and omega 3 fatty

12

TAMBARI JULY 5, 2015

acids. Did you know prawns are a rich source of calcium (next time you want to have a glass of milk, have a bowl of prawns instead) making it beneficial for strong teeth and bones. At Wakkis, this is one of many dainty platters which have prawns included in them. SOYA SAUCE: This is made from a fermented paste of boiled soybeans, roasted grain, brine, and Aspergillus sojae molds. After fermentation, the paste is pressed, producing a liquid, which is the soy sauce, and a solid by-product, which is often used as animal feed. Due to the sodium content in this, some countries use this as a healthier alternative to processed salt. Be warned that over – consumption as with any other can cause problems. People with complains of high

blood pressure should avoid soy sauce, for its high content of sodium. Moderation is key – Except ice-cream! Hint - use this to sauté your vegetables to give it a bit of flavour. WHITE PEPPER POWDER: White pepper is the ripe fruit of pepper wine which is dark red in colour when on the wine. It is soaked in water for nearly 15 days, after which it sheds its skin leaving the white seed inside the pepper fruit. This is dried and used as white pepper whole or powder. This can be used as a home remedy for tooth aches in conjunction with clove oil or table salt. Because of its carminative properties it boosts the secretion of hydrochloric acid and assists in carrying out digestion more effectively. We could tell you how good it tastes or show you. The beauty of this dish is not only visual; it goes further to tickle your taste buds. Having this with some pilau rice and gravy keeps your lunch sorted for typical Monday Rush or Friday Ginger. No matter the day, we aim to deliver, “Ask and You Shall receive” – Matthew 7:7.

Curl your lashes: Curl your eye lashes with brush for about 15 seconds on each side. You can always use an eyelash extender to make your lashes longer. Apply waterproof mascara: Always wait for each coat of mascara to dry up before applying another to avoid clumps. Apply eyeliner: Liquid or pencil,

eyeliner can be applied in many ways and depending on the eye shape, color, and sizes. Color and highlight your brows: You don’t have to trim your eyebrow; all you need to do is to brush up the brow, use your eye pencil to paint the brow and highlight using concealer that is a little lighter than your skin so that your brow appears bold and neat.
