// AISHA ABUBAKAR interview by AMINA ALHASSAN & PRISCA EKOKUJE-EMADU

Aisha Abubakar:

On finding contentment in fashion

Aisha Abubakar is the brain behind the brand, Falke by Aisha. Born to the family of Alhaji Yusha’u Falke and Hajiya Jummai Abubakar in the 1980s, she hails from Kano State in northern Nigeria. She speaks on her passion for fashion and overcoming challenges.

Bukuru low-cost where life was simple and everyone was his brother’s keeper. We had an Islamiya in our house, so our house was always full in the afternoon. I can vividly remember our Malam’s cane, which he freely unleashed on us when we got carried away. That cane had three heads, and every head had a mind of its own. My mother raised us well. I and my two siblings, Zainab and Abubakar, are very close in age; we grew up together. We fought a lot like cats and dogs. I remember when my mum, while going out, would sit us down and say, “You see, if you fight I’ll know because I have a third eye at the back of my head that sees everything.’’ And we totally believed her. I and my siblings would gather around a lantern when NEPA took light, and my mum would read gizo da koki stories, maganajari, amongst others. We would all sleep around the lantern and she would carry us one by one to our beds. I remember how my dad took us to the racecourse to exercise on Sundays, and we all ran faster than my mum. I would give anything to go back to those days. Life was simple.

I CAN VIVIDLY REMEMBER OUR MALAM’S CANE, WHICH HE FREELY UNLEASHED ON US WHEN WE GOT CARRIED AWAY. THAT CANE HAD THREE HEADS, AND EVERY HEAD HAD A MIND OF ITS OWN Challenges faced First of all, fashion designing is a very big capital intensive business. You have to put a lot of things in place - salaries, rent, deco. and more. The second challenge is getting the right staff, especially tailors that can translate your designs. Finally, sometimes there are difficult customers, especially when you offer bespoke services. You consult a customer and she agrees on a design, but when it’s time for fitting, it’s another story, such as: “This is not what I chose.” And the list goes on and on. Challenges are bound to happen but with God on our side, we are bound to overcome them.

I

Educational background grew up in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, where I went to one of the best schools then, Corona Primary School, Bukuru. I later moved to Kano to stay with my grandparents. There, I also went to one of the best schools, Prime College, Kano. I was one of their first students. I remember when we were only six students in the whole school. I finished in 2001 and proceeded to Usman Danfodio University, where I got a BSc in Applied Chemistry. I and the sciences have never blended. We never saw eye-to-eye. My mother wanted me to study Medicine, but I ended up studying Applied Chemistry. My first love has always been art. I can use my hands very well. I could plait hair when I was 8; I could knit as well. I knitted caps and socks to give to relatives when they gave birth. My mum would

always say, “If academics fails, at least you wouldn’t go hungry. Passion for fashion I was in Danfodio in my third year when my best friend, Asmau Chiso was getting married. I asked her to let me do her dinner dress. Surprisingly, she agreed. She gave me some money and I got the fabric designed. I took the dress to a tailor, and that was how it started. We have not gone international yet, but we are working on making a mark here in Nigeria. We have over 100 million Nigerians. If we succeed in getting even 0.5% of the population then we are good. The average northern Nigerian woman who is big on modesty and doesn’t want to break the bank is my target audience. Growing up I grew up in Jos in the suburbs of

Life’s lessons You have to plan, no matter what. I am the worse person when it comes to planning; I just feel like I have it all in my head. But when you don’t plan you find everything falling apart. Another thing I have learnt over the years is that people will criticise you, and it’s okay. Negative criticism has never killed anyone. It is hard, but the bottom line is how you pick yourself up. I have learnt to block all of that by gathering positive energy and moving on. That is what has been keeping me going. Most cherished gift I had a major inferiority complex when I was growing up. I was a people’s pleaser. The gift my husband gave me was bringing me out of that. That is the best gift anybody can give me. He made me see the world in a new light. He made me have the capability to say no and be comfortable with it.

AISHA ABUBAKAR // My husband and I We were match-made by his brother. And the rest is history. I am married to the most amazing human being, so it is really easy. He gives me room to breathe. He gives me all the support I need in the world, be it moral or financial. He is my pillar of strength. Motherhood experience I don’t have children of my own, but I adopted a two-week-old baby last year. He just turned one this may. He is the love of my life. Favourite fashion items I can’t do without I love abbayas because you can grow fat in them. I have tons of them. Five things always in my bag My phone because I do business with it. My ATM card because anything can happen. You will see one or two stones and accessories. I also keep one or two earrings, just in case I want to switch. You will also see my laptop even though it doesn’t always fit into my bag. First app checked in the morning and at bedtime Instagram, I live on that app. I maximise it to the core. Then of course I get my news from Linda Ikeji, I can’t do without Linda Ikeji. Then I visit bellanaija’s blog as well, to keep up with fashion trends. Beauty routine I just take a bath and rub whatever is available and move. I am not really a girly girl. I don’t have any beauty routine. Favourite sport I was a sports person while growing up. I used to be the best runner in Prime College. Favourite exercise I love taking long walks. My kind of music always on replay I am not a music person, but if I must listen, I go for the ones that have meaning - that would calm my soul. How do you relax? I sleep. I also relax with movies. I don’t need to think much. I love comedy because I laugh a lot it; calms me. Other profession I would have excelled in I think I would have been good at mentoring people. I would have been good as a psychologist. I have a gift of bringing people out. I have mentored a lot of entrepreneurs who want to go into fashion. What I won’t you be caught wearing I am very comfortable with flowing things. I am a northerner and a Muslim, so I won’t be caught wearing anything short or too tight. I can wear them in my house, but not outside. I won’t wear bodyhugging cloths. Favourite day of the week I love Sundays because I relax. I don’t go to work and I won’t receive calls. I could sleep all day if I want to.

Favourite travel destination I love Dubai, I get relaxed there. I also get to shop and go to their native market. I love their art and culture. Grandmum’s attribute that shaped me One thing I learnt from my grandmother is contentment. She is the most contented person in the world. I grew up being contented with what I have. What my two mothers taught me has built and shaped me. I can flow in whatever atever situation I find myself. Favourite colour Red is my favourite. e. When I was getting married I told my husband red. sban sb and d I loved love lo ved d re red d. He took it to heart and nd bought everything in red. When I say everything, erything, I mean everything was red orr had a touch of red. Favourite car I am not a car person, son, but let it have an air conditioning ditioning device and we are good od to go. Favourite food Tuwo shinkafa and d miyan kuka. Also, I can an take masa every day of the week.

I don’t have e a lot of regrets, I would tell myself not to study Chemistry. I would end up being an entrepreneur. epreneur. Role models I adore my grandfather. ather. Preventing Facial Acne

F

acial acnes are common skin problems that most people have to deal with at some point in their lives. Luckily, there are many options when it comes to getting those pesky pimples under control, from rigorous skin care regimens, to medications and creams, to innovative home remedies.

1. Wash your face twice a day. It is very important to keep your face clean when trying to prevent pimples. 2. Avoid touching your face or popping pimples. Hands come into contact with more dirt and bacteria throughout the day than any other part of the body, which is why you should avoid touching your face at

all cost. 3. Choose the right moisturizer. Depending on your skin type, you may want to choose a different moisturizer. 4. Exfoliate once a week. Exfoliating means gently wiping off the outer layer of the skin in order to help slough off dead skin and unclog pores. 5. Remove all traces of makeup before going to bed. Never go to sleep with makeup on. 6. Avoid sharing facial application with anyone who have acne. These include, face towels, make-up brushes or kits. 7. Wash your pillow cases frequently. The oils on your pillowcases can cause acne by spreading dirt, grime, and dead skin.

A

t some point, many people start to worry about what they eat and how well they eat, hence causing many to diet. What we eat not only keeps us fit but also healthy. Many people are of the conception that when you are on diet, most meals you eat are less tasty, but that perception is wrong. You can have a tasty meal while dieting. DRUG FOR LOW SPERM COUNT Good day, please which drug can someone with low sperm use? Olasunbo Well there are drugs that can be used to improve sperm count. Unfortunately most come in trade names which may not be ethical to use here. More importantly it is best to see a urologist or gynecologist with result is f the seminalysis for advise. For example a person with severe oligospermia like 1million per ml is better advised to go for assisted conception therapy. I will also advise that those who have been treated with “sperm boosters” for two or three times are better off with in vitro fertilization (IVF) rather than wasting more time or medications. Kindly see a urologist with the result.

DOES TOILET INFECTION STOP PREGNANCY? Does toilet infection stop a woman from getting pregnant? Shade from Kano State It depends on what you mean by toilet infection. Some have described the recurrent whitish discharge as toilet disease this does not affect the reproductive system in a long term. But when it comes in form of yellowish or brownish discharge, the organisms involve like chlamydial trachomatis, affect the upper genital tract in long term leading to tubal blockage and pelvic adhesions. This can result in the woman not being able to get pregnant naturally especially if it has affected both tubes. Let me sound a note of warning that what is usually described as toilet infection are actually sexually transmitted infections. So depending the ‘toilet infection’ may or may not cause inability to get pregnant.

Persistent Back Pains I am always having back and waist pain especially when I am about to see my period. The pain is usually unbearable. Please advice me on what to do? Ada From the explanation the pains do occur even when you are not on your period. How old are you? Any previous history of fall or accident that affected your back before?. Have you done X-ray? Back ache is not an uncommon complain but if it becomes recurrent and severe then steps must be quickly taken. One common cause is spondylosis of the lower vertebrae especially the lumbo-sacral ones. You will need to do Lumbo- sacral X-ray among other investigations. Seeing an Othopaedic Surgeon or Spine Surgeon is imperative. Meanwhile you will need strong analgesics for the pains.

Any food to increase sexual interest? What kind of food can increase sexual intrest and production of sperm in a male? Abdulmumuni I am not aware of any special food to increase sexual interest and sperm production. Balance diet, adequate consumption of fresh vegetables and fruits are advice for healthy lifestyle. One should avoid over dependence on junk food, refined food and supplements. There is a new dependence on “natural food supplements” in tablet forms been sold at expensive prices. Do not be deceived, natural is natural. How can it be natural when they have to convert it to tablets? How were they preserved for months and years? Imported under varying whether conditions and still “natural”. I agree they are supplements but people should not substitute it for fresh vegetables, carrot, oranges, pineapple cucumber among hundreds we are endowed it with in Africa. If only we can spend one third of the money we spend on the so called ‘natural supplements’ on the real natural fresh vegetables and fresh fruits then our body system will be better off.

Please, kindly include your full name and where you are writing from when sending your questions. Thank you.
