COVER Why piloting Flying has been my dream since when I was a little girl. When most girls were playing with dolls I was toying with toy planes and helicopters; you name it, I had it. At the time, I felt boarding the plane as a passenger was not enough an experience of the machine. I always wanted to be in the cockpit handling the controls myself, making this huge machine do what I wanted it to do. I have always been ecstatic about flying.
What it was about an aircraft and flying that triggered my interest The mechanics of flying in high altitude got me hooked. I must say it is a great human achievement.
First studying Geography and how it has helped Studying Geography was an introduction to exploring the world and experiencing it in an entirely different perspective. It was one step towards fulfilling my dream of flying as it gave me an upper hand in realising it.
Discouraging comments or reactions at the beginning None whatsoever!
Times during training when thoughts to quit emerged There was never such a moment because flying has always been my passion.
Age when I flew my first plane and what that experience was like It was in 2013 and I was 24 then. I flew in a PA-28 Warrior and it was the first time I flew a plane. My instructor spoke on the radio in fast few words that I did not understand. He played around with the instruments and before I knew it, we were leaving the ground. Everything looked much more beautiful. After that first flight, there was no turning back.
What the life of a female pilot is like Initially it was a men’s world. Notwithstanding, I decided to venture into it and I believe I’m equal to the task.
Any military training prior to piloting No, none at all.
Obstacles encountered while trying to get my pilot’s licence Being the only female out of a hundred students was a challenge on its own. However, I tried very hard to stand out and I dare say that I have definitely succeeded at it. I also had the obligation to make my Governor and Kano State proud for the scholarship opportunity they gave me to study this course abroad.
Educational background I attended the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and graduated in 2011 with a B. Sc in Geography.
“We all know that the aircraft itself does not know or understand gender; it’s just a piece of metal. Flying is all about the result of actions imposed by the pilot and the responses returned by the aircraft.”
Feeling when heading to the cockpit as a licensed pilot and perception by passengers I just got my licence. I hope to fly commercial very soon. But I am sure passengers will feel safe knowing there is a female in the cockpit.
Most unusual reaction I have gotten from a passenger Most passengers prefer a male pilot. Well, that said, we all know that the aircraft itself does not know or understand gender; it’s just a piece of metal. Flying is all about the result of actions imposed by the pilot and the responses returned by the aircraft.
Any difficulty commanding the respect of my male counterparts I am treated as an equal. My gender has never been an issue.
Thoughts on changes I would like to see in the industry that would allow more

COVER women to become pilots The ratio of female pilot is slowly increasing, but I don’t think the industry is to blame. I feel that we could accelerate this by promoting flying as a career option to young girls.
How it feels to be one of the few female pilots flying a commercial jet I have always felt a unique sense of freedom. Graduating as a commercial pilot was a great confidence boost; passing my instrument rating and flight checks was extremely rewarding, I will never forget the immense sense of achievement.
Jealousy being a major problem between male and female pilots Surprisingly no! That is not an issue at all.
Difference being a female pilot and a male one Flying is not about whether the pilot is a male or a female. Both men and women receive the same training. You don’t need big muscles to carry the plane on your head. If you are qualified and can fly the aircraft up to a standard, it doesn’t matter whether you are a man or a woman.
Women better pilots than men (Laughter) I think women, by our nature, have better abilities to be delicate and have more graceful control touch. A light touch is essential to flying and gives women a greater advantage over the male pilots.
What my parents think of my chosen profession They are happy with me, because I have achieved what I had wanted to achieve.
especially my mother who is also my friend and confidant. We have really interesting discussions as most of them are intellectuals. My friends are fun to be with as well; we always get to catch up every now and again.
Three fashion items I always have on me A good timepiece, a beautiful silk scarf and a good handbag.
Ways my experience has changed me It has changed me immensely in several ways so much so that I now have an ‘aerial’ view of life.
My favourite destination to fly to and why
My beauty routine It is nothing complicated at all. I eat healthy and rest well.
My favourite designer
Unusual as this might sound, I love to fly to the most challenging airports. These include the ice runway in the Antarctica, which is a stretch of snow and ice; or the Congohas Airport, Sao Paulo, Brazil. This second airport is only five miles from the city centre. These destinations are such pleasurable encounters for me.
Hmmm... I think my favourite designers are Armani and Chanel. I love their products.
My dream aircraft to fly
What next for me from here
The Boeing 777-300ER! It is the world’s longest twin jet with a range of 5,235 to 9,380 nautical miles (9,695 to 17,372 km). Wow, exciting!
To obtain my type rating for the Boeing 777300ER. I am also looking forward to settling down and starting a family.
Time for fashion (Laughter) Oh yes. Absolutely! It is a basic instinct in women to want to dress stylish, although I prefer a sophisticated, casual and serene look.
Motivation for my choice of fashion items The colour has to be right and I am particular about quality and the brand.
Combining work with some social life
My favourite fashion piece
I enjoy being in the company of my family,
You have got to have a good

timepiece. It says a lot about you. This one, I do not joke with.
What my typical day looks like It all depends on my flight schedule and mood. It is either I am flying, enjoying the company of friends or family or just having a good rest.

The turban can be worn to any occasion over a lovely outfit. Don’t be afraid to play with colours, as having them in different colours can add more glamour to your outfit. Follow these simple tips on how to tie a turban and you are good to go. Step 1: Fold a scarf around the back of your head and tie into a knot at the front. Step 2: Twist both ends of the scarf around until it forms into one large string. Step 3: Loop the fabric around the centre into a large top knot and tuck in the ends.

hat inspires your fashion sense? Affordability. Contrary to popular belief, not many of us writers are independently wealthy. What are the three items you always carry on you? My keys, a clutch, and in it is always a tube of M.A.C Brave Red lipstick. What’s your most interesting subject to write about? Life, in all its manifestations. Lately, I became very much interested in psychology. Are there subjects you would rather not write about? Which ones and why? I think most topics can be written about. It seems to me that the key is to write with honesty and grace. What other arts are you keen on? One day, I hope to paint the world in glowing colours. And, one day, I hope to play beautiful music on a guitar or ukulele, to go along with the beautiful painting. How much do your works reflect you? A lot, and not at all. What I mean by this is simply that, like many writers, there are some autobiographical elements to my stories. Moreover, as the writer, the contents of my stories almost have no choice but to come from a place that is unique to me - unique
to my experiences, or to my observations and my understanding of the world. Yet, my work is, in fact, fiction. So in that sense, many aspects of it do not reflect me at all. What’s a typical day like for you? I spend a lot of

It helps my mind feel safe in the world. I also spend a lot of time just thinking. Maybe I clean so much because it allows me time to think. Who has had the most influence on you? My mom. She has had the greatest and most positive influence on my life. Her sisters (my aunts) also had positive influence on me. Growing up, they were like second and third and fourth and fifth and sixth and seventh and eighth mothers to me. My mom had seven sisters, so I had eight of them strong, intelligent, beautiful women as my guiding lights.

MEN’S FASHION
Q&A Question: How and where do I wear kaftan?
Answer: One can wear a longsleeve kaftan with a pair of pants or office trousers and still look professional. Going by how versatile kaftan is, it can be an appropriate outfit for the office and a night out. It can also be worn on casual or formal occasions, depending on the material used.

ON MEN’S FASHION Lots of men are seeking answers to their fashion world. You will find answers to your questions here.
Question: Should I spray perfume on the skin or when I’m dressed? Answer: The best is to apply the fragrance directly onto unclothed skin. This method creates alchemy between the skin and the perfume, which is going to express the scent in a more personalised way. On the skin, the perfume gets warmer because it rises with your temperature, which isn’t the case for a perfume applied directly on cloths.
Question: Can socks be worn on loafers? Answer: Of course, yes! Wearing socks on loafers is a fashion blender made by many men. The fact that some of these loafers are made to look formal gives one the impression that

one would be okay with socks. Adding socks to loafers will totally bring out the beauty of your outfit. It is believed that, to complete a great look, good shoes are a must-have; and they must be worn appropriately.
Question: What is the proper way to wear a necktie? Answer: Regardless of how you knot it, your tie should hang to the centre of your belt buckle or to the waist band of your trousers. If your tie drapes bellow your belt, your appearance will not be balanced. Ties are not made in standard sizes, they range from 53 to 57 inches long. If your ties tend to be too long, try wearing them inside your trousers, or try wearing loose knots. You can also make sure your trousers are resting high enough.

Dr. Nathaniel Adewole
I HAVE OVARIAN MASS, WHAT DO I DO? I have a problem with my monthly period. I saw it last before I conceived in July 2013. Since then, I have not seen a little of it till date. I have been to a hospital where I had three scans. The first report was left cystic mass measuring 22 x 15mm. Right cystic mass measuring 40mm by 52mm and the comment says right cystic mass, left ovarian mass. The second report comment was left oophoritis while the third report comment was mass measuring 36.3x 45.2mm, the right is free. The gynaecologist gave me treatment for infections. The drug includes some strong antibiotics, please what do I do? The right mass from the first scan was cystic, and it was not too surprising that this was not seen in the second and third scan. Also, the left mass was not cystic and seemed to be increasing in size, still less than 5cm; one has to monitor it. Concerning the menses, it will be difficult to advise you because of lack of adequate information. How old are you? If you conceived in July 2013, what happened to the pregnancy. If you delivered, when? How long did you breastfeed? Have you done hormonal assay? More information will be needed. Meanwhile, see a gynaecologist. Ensure you actually see a gynaecologist, not quacks. He will be able to advise you.
Please, always include name and address when sending your health enquiries to us. Thank you

BREAST-MILK IS NOT FLOWING My wife put to bed two months ago, but breast-milk is not flowing and the baby cries too much. What should I do in this situation? Mohammed First, you need to ensure she knows how to position the baby well for breastfeeding. Also, she needs to take a lot of water and fluids and put the baby to the breast as frequently as possible. If despite all, she is not lactating, we will then advise that the baby take supplementary baby food. Please, let her see a paediatrician.
WHAT DO I DO ABOUT THE CERVICAL CERCLAGE? I had cervical cerclage after three months of pregnancy. And since last week, I started seeing water. When I went to the hospital and they admitted me, the doctor wanted to remove it. I have lost three pregnancies. Is there nothing they can do? I don’t want to lose this baby too; please help me. Deborah, Jalingo I empathise with you on this condition; it is not easy to lose three pregnancies in a roll. Most likely, you are having a rupture of the membrane. If I guess correctly, from the information above, the pregnancy is less than 24 weeks. After the rupture of the membrane at this early gestation age, it is difficult to salvage the baby. The major problem or complication feared is chorioamnionitis - onset of infection. If not combated, it could have serious consequences, including both pre-natal mortality and maternal mortality. As a result of this rupture of the membrane at this early gestation age, we normally counsel for termination of pregnancy. Therefore it is advisable that the cerclage be removed. Let me acknowledge that in the developed world, the foetus, between 22 and 28 weeks, can be salvaged, though quite a number of the earlier ones will have nuerological damages. In this situation, things like amnio-infusion can be done to increase survival. Apart from the rupture of the membrane, other indications for early removal of cerclage include ante partum haemorrhage, that is, bleeding in the second half of pregnancy, premature onset of labour, among others. I will encourage you to be strong. Remember that your life is more important in this situation. According to an African proverb, let the calabash be intact even if the water will pour away. Allowing the removal of the cerclage, and if necessary, stimulating labour now, may help prevent sepsis.
DISCHARGE AFTER MENSTRUATION I am 15 years old and I have never met a man, but I am seeing water coming from my private part after my menstruation. Zainab, Jigawa What is the colour? Is it whitish? If it is vaginal candidiasis and it is not related to sexual contact, the causative agent is part of the normal flora of the vagina. Antifungal agent is all you need. I will suggest you let your parent or guardian be aware so that you may visit your family physician.

File photo: Some elders from Yoruba land
The Oro Festival in Yoruba land BY Pupwaya Timothy Dibal
T
he Oro festival in the western region of Nigeria, home of the yoruba tribe is a traditional annual event that is normally observed in July. The word Oro means fierceness, tempest, or provocation, and Oro himself appears to be personified executive power. it is also an ageless traditional culture that is celebrated by many communities in yoruba land. Oro god is an highly revered deity among the yorubas. It’s mystery is concealed among the male folk with the aid of flat stick or iron strung to a long pole. Oro makes his approach known by a strange, whirring, roaring, frighting sound that sends chill down the spine of people. This oro festival is observed for seven days every year and the voice of oro heard from morning to night. In yoruba tradition, we have two types of masquerades, the one that is adorned with clothes, colorful clothing which we see in the day and the one without clothes. Oro is like naked and women are forbidden from seeing it.
A masquerade performing during one of the festivals
“Traditionalists performs some sacrifices to appease the gods and achieve peace within the domain, whenever Oro masquerade festival is arround.” During this period women are not permitted to go out as they were forbidden to see Oro, while Oro himself, in a long robe hung with shells, and a wooden mask painted white, with the lips smeared with blood, parades the town with a numerous following. The proverb, bi obinrin ba fokudi Oro, Oro agbe (if a women disrespect Oro, it is death). At that point in time, a curfew would be declared. The people of Oyo, Ijebu, Ebga, Lagos, Iseyin and Jabata were noted for Oro worship. The Oro worship is most popular
among the yoruba, particularly the Oyo, Egba and Ijebu. In Ibadan, Oyo state, there are certain masquerades that women must not see. like the Oloolu and the Okebadan. During the Oloolu’s outing, women must avoid his route and same thing goes to that of the Okebadan. Traditionalists performs some sacrifices to appease the gods and achieve peace within the domain, whenever Oro masquerade festival is arround.

Adding fruits and vegetables to your meals BY Victoria Onehi
S
tart small:
If you are not used to eating much fruits and vegetables, it takes starting small, maybe going for one serving a day at first and staying the path till you get to five servings.
Say yes to salads: Salads have the potential to be a healthy habit gold mine. They are rich in fruits, vegetables and nutritional value. Alternate your greens and fruits to make it spicy. Not everyone gets excited when they look at a plate of raw vegetables. But pair them with nuts, creamy avocado and healthy salad dressings.
HEALTH TIP OF THE WEEK
Eat breakfast
An early start on eating also keeps your metabolism more active throughout the day, so eat breakfast.
Mix vegetables: Top proteins with sautéed vegetables:
Desserts tend to be regarded as a sweet treat for special occasions only. But a fruit-based dessert has the ability to offer a light, refreshing, naturally sweet ending to a satisfying meal, with the added bonus of an extra fruit serving.
Instead of topping cooked fish or meat with a sauce, use sautéed vegetables such as peppers, onions, tomatoes and spinach. They will add plenty of flavour and nutrients, as well as boost portion size without adding a lot of calories.
Mix vegetables such as sautéed onions, tomatoes, any green leafy vegetables into your favourite dish for that extra flavour. You can include raw, cooked, fresh vegetables in your meals. Choose whichever type based on your personal tastes, the meal you are making, how you prepare it, your budget, and what is in season.
Be creative when making smoothies /fruit juices:
Replace carbohydrate with vegetables:
Eat salad for lunch or dinner:
The great thing about a smoothie is the open invitation to creativity. Try something new, like mango, pawpaw or even cucumber. When you make your own, you are the artist in control of the colour palette of fresh fruits.
Lighten carbohydrate with lowcalorie vegetable. If you love mashed potatoes, replace some of the potatoes with vegetables like tomatoes and pumpkin leaves or any vegetable of your choice. Also, you can fill your sandwich with vegetables like lettuce, tomatoes and avocados. They have fewer calories and will help fight diseases.
Don’t skip desserts:
Fruits salad
It is no longer news that health experts stress the need to eat more fruits and vegetables every day to stay healthy. Mrs. Sarah Abagai, head of Dietetics Department, National Hospital, Abuja, said, “Let at least 60 per cent of your meals be made up of fruits and vegetables.” The reason for this is not farfetched. Researchers have shown that fruits and vegetable can help reduce the risk of heart diseases, type 2 diabetes, some types of cancer, and high blood pressure. Also, fruits and vegetables can help fight the obesity epidemic which is evident in our society and other climes. The most common reason people give for not eating enough fruits and vegetables is that they are often not convenient. So how do we incorporate fruits and vegetables to our meals every day? Here are some tips.
Snack on fruits: Try to include one or two vegetables in every meal or snack you eat throughout the day.
Eat salad for lunch or dinner. You can also eat salad before lunch or dinner to reduce your appetite for your main dish. Prepare salads in various ways by using various leafy greens, other vegetables, and dressings so you are less likely to get tired of eating the same foods repeatedly. Add proteins to make the salad more filling if you intend to use it as a meal.

BEAUT Y
Beauty habits to avoid
Make-up remover pack
BY Mulikatu Mukaila Even the most experienced beauty experts still make a lot of mistakes when it comes to regular beauty routine. These beauty sins can make our morning routines all the more difficult. To get you back on the right path, here are some simple tips to make sure that you do not commit them again. Set of towels
Pimple popping: While pimple popping might be hard to resist, it is actually quite bad for your skin. Popping a pimple will not only increase the time required to heal, it can also cause an infection which can lead to scarring. Instead of popping it, try using a good quality pimple cream that will help to reduce the inflammation and destroy bacteria.
Not looking after your tools: Did you know that each time you use your make-up brushes and applicators, bacteria, dirt and oil all get trapped in the bristles? Dirty brushes can transfer these impurities to your skin, causing breakouts each time you use them. You can avoid this by regularly washing your brushes to get rid of the buildup. The simplest way to keep them clean is to rinse them in warm water with a little bit of baby shampoo, then lay flat on a towel to dry.
Unless you want to overwhelm people with your scent, there is no reason to spritz beyond your wrists and behind the ears.
Always clean your make-up before sleeping: Avoid sleeping with make-up on your face. This is because, with that you are inviting bacteria on the face, which will cause you acne and pimples. Always remember to wash the face no matter how tired you are. Do not go to bed with you makeup on your face.
“Did you know that each time you use your make-up brushes and applicators, bacteria, dirt and oil all get trapped in the bristles? Dirty brushes can transfer these impurities to your skin, causing breakouts each time you use them.”
Washing your hands: It’s a pretty simple task, but many forget. Not washing your hands before applying your favourite face cream or serum is an open invitation to dirt, germs and bacteria to invade not only your skin but also your jar of cream.
