Olubunmi Uwazironye Usim-Wilson I have a passion for leadership 04

TAMBARI JANUARY 31, 2016

Background My name is Olubunmi Uwazironye Usim -Wilson, I hail from a kingdom called Abriba ‘Small London’ which is Ohafia LGA in Abia State. People used to address my late dad as Baba Eko, and my father called all of us with all Nigerian names. I am Igbo by tribe but I bear Olubunmi and my brother bears Hassan. Also in those days, after the war, every Abriba person that passed through Lagos stopped at my father’s house and through my parents, I have learnt how to give to people; I make sure that any community that I am, I ensure that they engage in skill acquisition. We go to villages and turn villages into urban area. I attended Anglican primary school in Lagos and proceeded to Aunty Ayo Comprehensive Secondary School Keffi Street, Obalende also in Lagos State after which I went to the United States of America Bunker Hills Community College in Boston, Massachusetts. From there, I went to Roxbury Community College also in Boston, USA to study Hospitality Management and then to Florida International University, Tamiami, USA where I obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree. I also attended the American College of Metaphysical Theology in Minneapolis, Minnesota where I did my Master’s degree programme in Art, and then Ph.D also at the American College of Metaphysical Theology in Minnesota. After that I started work at Sheraton Lagos Hotel as Credit Controller. I came to Abuja in 1986 and worked as Sales and Marketing Manager at the former Nicon Noga Hilton now Transcorp Hilton Hotel Abuja and we sold Abuja to the world. I later went back to the United States and from there, I came up with the Miss Big World Competition. I conceived that idea when Agbani Darego was made World. I think I was somewhere in New York when I conceived the idea that plus size people should also be celebrated. So after I had contested for House of Representatives in Abuja, that was 2003, under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and they did what they know how best to do, I went to NDP just because I wanted to make a difference. After my foray into politics, I asked myself what was there to do, and I picked up My Miss Big dream and it was successful. I have now done about nine editions.

I HAVE ALWAYS SEEN MYSELF AS A COURAGEOUS PERSON. IN FACT ONE OF MY FRIENDS IN THE UK RECENTLY SAID TO ME THAT AT MY CHILDHOOD, I ALWAYS SAID THAT I WOULD ONE DAY BECOME THE PRESIDENT OF NIGERIA, AND I AM STILL AT IT

Career background I started off when I left high school and got a job as a cargo clerk in the Nigerian Airways in 1977. I wanted to become an air hostess but my mother kicked against that. From there I went abroad and worked in international hotels as soon as I got a degree in hospitality management and then I came back to Nigeria and started work in Sheraton Lagos and I later moved to Abuja and worked in Sheraton and Towers as a guest relations hostess and later the hotel was closed down. I then got a job with Julius Berger and later moved to Nicon Hilton as Public Relations Manager, then Sales and Marketing, Front Office. I worked around and from there I left and started the Abuja Weekend Magazines, and I also write books. I am never idle, I am not the type that will be seen doing nothing. Growing up It was a happy home; my parents loved all of us and the atmosphere re was so free - you don’t see it like that anymore. We had peace of mind. In my home they will let you know that you need to work hard to makee it in life and they will also let you know that you cannot seat idle in the house. I cooked when hen I was young and there was no where theyy sent me that I didn’t go. I was living off Ojuelegba uelegba Western Avenue. Our house is on Clerk lerk Street and from there my mother will send nd me to Karimu to visit my grandmother. But whenever I was going there, some boys would be there waiting to beat me up because, according g to them, I was too proud, that I didn’t give them attention tention and all that. The worst time of my life was when I had just finished secondary ry school and my mother regularly sent mee to my grandmother to take food her. I wass on my way, minding my business when all of a sudden, something happened. It happened appened in Surelere, about four boys caught ught up with me on the road, close to a place an elderly woman was frying ng akara (bean cake); they had come to beat me up. I always had ad the strength to fight the boyss but on that particular day theyy had the upper hand; as they pushed hed me around I almost fell into the woman’s boiling frying oil. They then n all of a sudden ran and jumped into to a moving bus and I was left alone. ne. But as they pushed me, a small all boy close to me fell into the hot oil and I was arrested for something omething I didn’t do. My mother ther had to come and get et me from the police station. tion. She also paid for the boy’s treatment. But ut from then on, I wass always eager and stronger such that when anything is about to happen to me, I know that I have survived the harassment and bullying nt of those boys and d that had made me stronger in life. I have ve had that belief that nothing can stop me from getting where I am going to in life. e.

Childhood aspirations I have always seen myself as a courageous person. In fact one of my friends in the UK recently said to me that at my childh childhood, I always said that I would one day become the preside president of Nigeria, and I am still at it. I didn’t even know that w when I was growing up I kept telling people that I would rule this country but it is not surprising that I ran fo for the House of Representatives and this year, I ran for a senatorial position. So I have always said I am going to be a leader in this nation, not because beca of the power involved in it but because I believe what we are lacking in Nigeria today, w we need God fearing people to attain them. My aspiration is to be in a position where I could be able to help the citizenry. This is why when I ran for the House of Representatives, I later felt some regret - that I should have spent the mone mo money neyy trying tryi tr ying ng to to be a lawmaker, la instead trying to help in another way. But, o of course when you have that zeal just like our Pre President Muhammadu Buhari, even after the cry, he still struggled and got there because it was on his mind to be president someday so he can correct the wrongful acts in this country. So my aspiration is to be a leader and nothing can kill it. I want a n situat situation where I would be able to assist the needy, my ex-husband assis Nassarawa Eggon. I am is from fr not a tribalistic person, I am Igbo and my ex-husband was from an Nassarawa Eggon, so there’s Na nothing to it because all of us no have the same blood. I have h ssome of my family members who are Muslims and I am a w Christian and we don’t lord on C eeach other, instead we live in peace and harmony. But now p tthey want to use politics to se separate us and we cannot afford to allow a it. Everybody should use the o opportunity to say we are one becau because if anything happens to this country, no nation can take us. So countr we be better start telling ourselves the truth and love ourselves. Life’s lessons You have to have reasons to give testimony. Life has taught m me that nothing in this world is permanent; perma you could be very rich today and an something happens, and yourself a failure because the consider yo money is no longer there?

// OLUBUNMI UWAZIRONYE USIM-WILSON

No, you have to continue the struggle and push on because nothing in this world is permanent. To be down today and someone gives you a car, it is God that did it for you, so don’t ever think life is finished. Life has taught me to be strong irrespective of anything that is happening and when somebody offends you, the only thing you have to do to that person is to forgive the person and move on because if you hold that person in mind, you are putting petrol inside your own soul. As for me I don’t ever keep anything in mind that disturbs me. If you offend me, I will tell you straight away and that is all, and that doesn’t mean I won’t talk to you when next I see you. But if you persist, I eat with you but with a long spoon. To have constant communication with you is not it. So life has taught me to be bold, as it says in the word of God, if you know God, life would be very smooth and sweet for you.

Multitasking home and career I have always been a career woman and fortunately for me I have one child, Princess Lola. She is a musician and actress, I am so contented with her and I am grateful to God that he gave her to me. I dedicated my life and everything to her. Home front and career can be joggled, it is just management, know what your priorities are; and I was able at an early age to know all my priorities, I do my just with all my best abilities and I go home to take care of my child and it is easy when you plan yourself. My husband and I I am not ashamed off my n’t husband. That it didn’t work does not mean hee is my enemy; he is my friend. We met when Nicon Hilton sent me to the head office as sales and marketing manager in Lagos. It was then that I started going to Bethel Ministry. Really I was going to church but I didn’t know God becausee you can be going to church ch but you don’t have a personal onal relationship with God. So o when ple praising I got there I saw big people God so I started coming ng early so that I could get the front row seat. They always called him out (my husband) to preach the word of God and that was how we became close and he proposed to me. If I was angry that I was doing so well in Abuja and they sent me to Lagos, but maybe I wouldn’t have met my husband. This is also why I encourage the youth that they should always stay back and serve wherever they are posted to for the NYSC. So at the end of the day, we battled a lot of battles because of our background and at the end we got married and we had a lovely moment before issues came up and we had to go our separate ways: he is where he is and I am where I am today. I am grateful to God that our paths crossed.

Fashion accessories always on me I always have my necklace, my earrings and a ring on my hand and I love to wear jackets, skirts and any outfit that would cover my legs. Best travel destination In those days I used to prefer America. Last time, I went to Dubai and I loved it; I like Dubai but there is another place I want to visit now which is Italy. But, I also like going to African nations and some parts of Nigeria, but tourism here is lagging behind. I look forward to when our country will value tourism so that when I go to a place like Ibadan and eat with tourists. I will eat the local TAMBARI JANUARY 31, 2016

Life’s philosophy Do unto others what you would like others to do to you; don’t ever colonize anybody. Best mode of relaxation I play games game - I play chess, I read my Bib Bible, I go out once in a while w with friends. I used to enjoy enjo going out with my daughter d to watch movies whenever mo sh she is around until sh she got married, b but most of the ttime, I love myself ttoo much that I eenjoy myself by m myself and that is my own form of rela relaxation.

I ALWAYS HAVE MY NECKLACE, MY EARRINGS AND A RING ON MY HAND AND I LOVE TO WEAR JACKETS, SKIRTS AND ANY OUTFIT THAT WOULD COVER MY LEGS

Best gift from him The best gift is for him to have married me because it is not all men that end up marrying a girl they come across. Any man that can marry you, that is a wonderful gift except any other thing, you are on your own. It is not easy, a lot of people die without even getting married and to God be the glory for I am grateful and contented with life.

amala. But we are focusing more on the outside world while we have everything here in Nigeria. So if the government of the day can help us and make it exciting to go to, maybe Nasarawa State and relax there, that would be my best holiday spot.

Be sport Best I love to play golf and I do exercise exercise; I do a lot of video exercise too. Favourite dish I have so many because I love all Nigerian dishes. I have a book called Best Nigerian Dishes. My favourite dish, I would say, is Ekpan-Kuku, it is an Akwa- Ibom delicacy and it is made of cocoyam and leaf. Role models I would say my mother because for her to have brought up someone like me, giving me all the confidence, she is my role model number one; then Hillary Clinton and Barbara Walters. Women and the society Why should anyone place you as a woman? Nigeria is our collective country, we own it together, it is just because of our mindset, we shouldn’t allow someone to place us somewhere, we are the women who give birth to the men, we are good as sisters, mothers and so on but we are not good as leaders? Until we start realizing that we are all equal, we cannot move. Germany is a world powerful country and yet a woman is ruling it. So why is it in our own Nigeria that we want the men to give to us a position in the society? I don’t want to be placed; I want to make an impact in the society. I am not being a feminist but a realist that believes I should not be given what belongs to me. What a man can do, a woman can do far better, I am not the one that made that quotation but I am using it to buttress the fact that we can’t continue to wait for a man to give to us. Nigerian women should know that that these men are our sons, brothers, uncles and partners, we shouldn’t be relegated when it comes to our heritage. Advice from my mum that stuck That I can be whatever I so much desire. I believe and still concur with my mother that anything you set your mind that you want to do, you would definitely achieve your goal unless it is not really in your mind to do it. Style I love to dress simple, in a way I would be very comfortable and also descent. For you to progress in life, you have to take life simple as it comes; try not to give your husband too much work by collecting aso-ebi of N90,000 when you haven’t eaten enough or there are people around you that need help. There are times that you just want to appear simple and feel free with yourself because simplicity is the best.

FEATURES TO MAKE YOUR KITCHEN LOOK SPLENDID by JAMILA ILIYASU PARAGALDA

I

f there is one room in the house that serves as a magnet for the entire family, it is the kitchen. Part diner, part craft room, part laboratory, part meeting space. Creating the kitchen that serves all of these functions and still reflects your personal style is quite easy. Here are some tips: 1. Hide small appliances. This is a no cost trick. Nothing brings down a space more than messy counter. Keep your counter space clear of small appliances like toasters, blenders as they are easy enough to take out when you want to use them. 2. Use Art work. Artwork is a great way to elevate any room and it will do the same in your kitchen. Don’t be afraid to go big and bold as this will give the illusion of a bigger space. 3. Lighting. Chandelier is the perfect accessory to not only brighten your kitchen 1DPHG <HVWHUGD\ :HOFRPH WR WKH :RUOG

but change the mood of the space. 4. Paint a lighter colour. A light colour on the walls and cabinets instantly brightens a space making it look larger. Light colours reflect light and hide a multitude of scratches and dents on your cabinet 5. Update hardware. Hardware can completely change the look of a piece of furniture and it can do the same for your cabinets. Replace drawer and cabinet pulls for a new unique look that instantly updates your home making it look splendid. 6. Kitchen styles are known for their clean lines. To match this look and feel, make sure you have handles installed on the )$7,0$ cabinet doors and walls. Stay away from any intricate designs or patterns as well. SLEEPLESS NIGHTS OVER HEAVY MENSTRUAL FLOW I have a problem which gives me sleepless nights I don’t know if it’s normal. I have been having my menstrual flow for 7 days now and it increases in flow everyday with thick clots. I have to change more than four or five times a day. Please sir tell me if it is normal. Salome It is not normal. You will need to go to hospital And see a Gynaecologist. Are you in reproductive age group? Possible diagnosis include sub mucous fibroid and endometrial hyperplasia. In case you are forty years and above, then apart from investigations like scan you will need to have endometrial sampling for histology.

ARE THESE NIPPLES NORMAL? I am confused and disturbed. I’m 25 years old and since I reached puberty age I realized that my breast seems to grow without a nipple. Nipples are suppose to be seen outer but mine are inside. It’s like it has grown inwards instead of outwards, leaving a hole. But whenever I forcefully bring it out it actually comes out but when I release it, it goes back to its inner position. Kindly help me, please Doctor. Joy, Bauchi. D What you have is called inverted nipples. I must commend you for noticing it early enough. In some cases the women will notice it during breastfeeding after delivery which will then pose a challenge to sucking by the baby. The process you have started is a way of managing it. Continue to try to bring it out with time it will stay in most cases. For those who are married the spouse is usually advise to assist in the process of everting it. There is a improvised way of trying to mechanically everting it. You will

be taught by your obstetrician or the Paediatrician. Another type is flat nipples which also pose a challenge to breastfeeding. Management is the same as above. All women of reproductive age should phase check the nipples to see whether it is exerted, inverted or flat. The ideal is exerted. Women especially if pregnant, with inverted and flat nipples should try to discuss with their obstetrician so that steps could be taken before delivery.

FEELINGS FUNNY AFTER MEDICATION I was given antihypertensive drugs two weeks ago. These include Lisinopril, Vasoprin and another which I can’t recall its name. Since I started taking it I have been feeling funny. I can’t sleep well. I feel dizzy and urinate too often. Should I stop them? Hadiza, Kano The medication that makes you urinate often is likely to be an anti- diuretics which is often used in management of hypertensive diseases. If you stop taking them without replacement it could be dangerous because of complications like stroke, I’ll advice you go back and see your doctor. The antihypertensives may be changed.

Please, kindly include your full name and where you are writing from when sending your questions. Thank you.

FINE COOKING

with

Lasooni Machi “Governing a great nation is like cooking a small fish - too much ch handling m a wise will spoil it”. - Lao Tzu. These are very strong and true words from nown as Nile man. The succulence of each piece of fish (Giwan Ruwa also known Perch) flavoured faultlessly with crushed garlic and fresh cream allows us to satisfy you over and over again. Here at Wakkis, we may not have the power or luxury of governing a whole nation, but we take pride in the governing of your meals to ensure maximum fulfilment to every customer.

INGREDIENTS BONELESS FISH: We love food and healthy living so much it overflows. Wakkis have taken the time to debone each piece of fish so that you don’t have to stress about it. The beauty about fish is it requires minimum effort but goes well with everything. This is a calorie dense protein pack that is recommended when it comes to your health. It’s easier to digest compared to chicken for example, and it’s good for the eyes too. The oil found in the Giwan Ruwa (Nile Perch) is said to boost the cardiovascular health and provides protection from stroke and heart attack simultaneously.

GARLIC POWDER: Did you know that garlic falls under the onion, shallots and leeks family and is a bulbous plant. The pungent smell of this plant which is caused by a compound called allicin like its counterparts is what makes it unique. Over the years the popularity of this plant has grown and is being added to every area of our lives. It has medicinal benefits to the body; in cooking it can emphasize the aroma of a dish. From research high doses of garlic over time improves blood pressure of those with high blood pressure. Another benefit of this bulbous beauty is that the old leftover pieces that have been forgotten in storage may be recycled into powder form hence no excuse for wastage.
