TAMBARI MARCH 27, 2016

CATHY ALLARA AMATO // Introduction I’m Cathy Allara Latiwa Amato, from CongoCentral Africa. I’m of Swahili and Indian Arab descent. My middle name Latiwa is translated as a wise and visionary daughter from the ancestry of great achievers. My mixed heritage of Congolese mother and Arab father, Italian Husband and Belgian upbringing formed the bases for what I represent today. I will simply call myself a global citizen with multicultural links to Africa, Europe and Asia. Educational background I have a Master’s Degree in International Law, a post graduated diploma in Business and Project Management fromBelgium and anotherMaster’s in International Politics. I have these masters from prestigious institutions in Belgium and Congo. I also have a degree in entreprenuership. Career Currently, I’m in the oil and gas sector and involved in governmental relations – which is totally different from fashion. LAF is basically passion driven.

CO V E R

Passion for Art Growing up in Congo, I travelled a lot... I was raised in a typical African and Arab style of moonlight folklore, basket weaving, and pottery making as well as painting. I will say my love for fine art stemmed from my upbringing.

What growing up like Life in Congo (DRCongo) is similar to that in Nigeria and other African nations; growing WE WERE NOT up was more about family EXPOSED TO THE inculcating the right values on children- the value of DIGITAL WORLD hard work, respect and neighbourliness as well as OF CHILDREN OF tactics. It was fun TODAY, THERE WERE survival times especially as children, NO INTERNET, GSM we were oblivious of the challenges happening PHONES AND SOCIAL around the world. We were not exposed to the digital MEDIA AMONG world of children of today, OTHERS. WE HAD OUR there were no internet, GSM phones and social UNIQUE WAYS OF media among others. We ENTERTAINMENT AND had our unique ways of entertainment and makings MAKINGS FRIENDS friends from other countries via the pen pals initiative. I FROM OTHER kind of miss those days but COUNTRIES VIA THE quite appreciative of today’s world.

PEN PALS INITIATIVE. I KIND OF MISS THOSE DAYS BUT QUITE APPRECIATIVE OF TODAY’S WORLD.

Law to Arts, the journey There are two different things here, my love for arts and craft is purely borne from passion while law is my profession. There wasn wasn’tt a switch or diversion from one to the other. I’m only using art and fashion to raise money and support for IDPs and other vulnerable groups in the society. My background in international law - especially in international development and human rights formed the bases for my love for humanitarian Work.

Aspirations growing up Coming from a francophone country, I knew it was important to learn English language in order to operate outside my comfort zone. I also knew from an early age that I wanted to be involved in internationall development and humanitarian service – and as such English language would be an added advantage. To

achieve this I enrolled into a language school and took self-taught tutorials. It wasn’t easy as I was mostly in French speaking environment but today I’m glad that my dreams and aspirations are a reality. Through LAF I’m able to support causes that put smiles on the faces of people.

My definition of style My definition of style is being comfortable in whatever outfit with the confidence, personality and seduction that can drive home the message of simplicity.

Fond child memories Listening to African folktales from my grandmother and basket weaving.

My stay in Nigeria I have been in Nigeria since September 2013 when my husband who works for the EU delegation was transferred from Brussels.Though it’s my first time in West Africa, it feels like home as everything here reminds me of Congo. You can understand where the passion for philanthropic work stemmed from. As an African, I am proud to say Nigeria, which is the most populous black nation in the world, is a wonderful country. It is a continent on its own given its huge population and ethnic diversity. The rich culture, resilience of the people and of course abundant natural resources. I agree with those who say Nigerians are the happiest people on earth in spite of their challenges- these challenges are not peculiar to Nigeria but the ability to resolve problems in a unique way without disintegrating is a plus for Nigeria and a model for other nations to emulate.

What my typical day is like I wake up at 5a.m., do my morning devotion, light weight exercise, shower and off to work. While at work I organise meetings, do presentations on our projects and other stuff. I really don’t know how I manage to do all these as it is quite tiring but, above all, I enjoyed being a mum and a wife. Most cherished gift My most cherished gift is my daughter, Valentina Latiwa, she’s indeed God’s gift to us. How I met my husband I met him at a lawyers’ party in Brussels, as two of us are lawyers. Husband’s support I wouldn’t have accomplished all this without the support of my husband. He gave me both moral and financial support when I ventured into this and has remained my biggest motivator. He is also an artist and most of his works have raised funds for some of our projects. I’m completely smitten by him and grateful to have a wonderful spouse and caring dad to our daughter. Three fashion accessories you would always have on Sunglasses, Handbag and a scarf Best travel destination New York;it’s one of the fashion capitals of the world.Aside that, I like the diversity of the people and their energy, and generally the buzz of the city. I got married there. Best mode of relaxation Watching movies with my family or swimming family time. Best food Plantain banana, pondu (Congolese vegetables and grilled fish)

hospitable, unique and very fashionable- this is evident in the fashion sense of the food vendors, church goers and party guests you see daily.

MY DEFINITION OF STYLE IS BEING COMFORTABLE IN WHATEVER OUTFIT WITH THE CONFIDENCE, PERSONALITY AND SEDUCTION THAT CAN DRIVE HOME THE MESSAGE OF SIMPLICITY.

My love for Nigeria As a Congolese, I feel quite at home in Nigeria and can easily relate to situations as its pretty much the same in the continent. Nigerians are

All about LAF The Latiwa Art and Fashion (LAF) show is a fashion for relief initiative that promotes charitable causes with no thought for recompense. LAF’s first edition, Charity One, is partnering with nonprofit organisations such as Like Minds projects and Christ Treasure orphanage to raise money and awareness on the plights of the less privileged in the society. The two projects are based in Abuja, Maiduguri, Borno State, working with IDPs for Like Minds and Orphans for Christ Treasure. Since 2015, LAF has been working with these foundations to support causes like the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) groups, orphanages, literacy development and learning disabilities as well as women empowerment initiatives. In a country with a huge percentage of vulnerable people, it is quite a challenge to pick and support two charity projects. However LAF, through its maiden fashion show and concert in Abuja, is synergising with these foundations after due consideration of what they both truly represent -especially their widely spread humanitarian services which cut across many areas. The fashion for relief show will feature designers from over 10countries with unique presentations of ethnic fabrics and contemporary styles. There will also be a presentation of arts and crafts from Nigerian designers and the expat community. The overall target is to raise as much funds as possible to provide relief materials for IDP groups and orphans. For LAF, true charity is the desire to be useful to others with no thought of compensation.

LUXURY LIVING

Styling with different couloured couches by JAMILA ILILYASU PARAGALDA

A

rranging two different colours and types of couches in one living room is normally entertaining and also attractive. The combinations will actually transform your living room to something extraordinary. Couches that are identical, or which differ in colour and style, can be arranged several ways. A sitting room with colourful couches played around will give the home the personality it deserves. However, while choosing the variety of colours for your couches, it is necessary for you not to choose colours that go out of line with the colour of your wall, rug and other decorative pieces so as not to end up creating a shabby room.

SHED MORE LIGHT ON MISSED MISCARRIAGE Can you shed more light on missed abortion? Uju, Jos Missed abortion occur when the pregnancy stopps developing in the womb before the age of viability and there is no process of expulsion like bleeding. A lot of times the symptoms if it occurs in the first trimester is that the woman will notice the symptoms of pregnancy suddenly disappeared. At later gestation during the second trimester, absence of increase abdominal girth or even reduction in size. In those whose pregnancy is already around eighteen weeks or more, the absence of fetal kicks may be the pointer. Examination of the patient may reveal a uterine size that is far less than the expected gestational age. On digital examination, there is usually closed Ultrasound scan usually pick the intrauterine pregnancy with a non viable foetus that is a fortis without cardiac activity, At the early gestation one has to be careful not to misdiagnose an early pregnancy with missed abortion especially in cases of unsure date and women with oligomenorrhea. The treatment is either medical or using manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) especially in early pregnancy.

TWO MONTHS PREGNANCY WITH HEARTBURNS I am two months pregnant and I have been having heart burns. When I eat it doesn’t digest. What do I do? Ummi, Lokoja It is not unusual to have heart burns in pregnancy. It is due to reflux esophagitis in pregnancy. The relaxation of the lower esophageal during pregnancy due to hormones released especially progesterone has been implicated. Take antacids either the suspension or the chewable Orals. Also feeling of fullness, indigestion and reduce appetite is not uncommon in early pregnancy

Smelly discharge Sometimes smelly discharge comes out of my private part. Please, which drug do you recommend? Zainab What is the colour of the discharge? Is it yellowish, creamy, whitish or brownish? Any associated lower abdominal pains or pruritus vulvae (itching of the vulva)? I will suggest you do endocervical and high vaginal swabs for microscopy culture and sensitivity. You may need antibiotics and/or anti fungal. If the discharge is yellowish or brownish then antibiotics must be included.

LOW LIBIDO AT FORTY I am having similar problem like you treated recently - weak erection, low libido and premature ejaculation. The problem started six years ago, when I contacted STI. At forty, I ca hardly last long during sexual intercourse. I went to a physician who diagnosed me and gave me some injection and medication. I am not yet married. My fear is how to make love to my wife and bear children. Can weak erection and low libido impregnate a woman? Noticed that my sperm is watery. What do I do? I am depressed. Mohammed, Bida. First, getting depressed will not solve the problem rather it will aggravate it. Also reduced libido and premature ejaculation does not mean a man cannot impregnate his wife. I will advise you to take the bull by the horn, make up your mind about marriage. Remember an understanding wife can even help to overcome the psychological cause of reduced libido. You can not accurately use the appearance of the semen to Jugde the ability of it to fertilize the egg or not, you can do seminal fluid analysis. Also make out time to see the urologist.

Tesslo Concepts Unveils ‘Lagos Island’ for men

Women’s wear brand, Mae launches its latest collection Emerging African fashion brand, Mae Otti is out with its debut collection as it presented elegant ladies wear ranging from casual, official to evening outfits. The designer played with checks, bold, whites and neutrals colours to create the pieces, striking a perfect balance between androgynous and chic.

Tesslo concept Best Fashion Designer Award winner at the Nigeria Fashion Show in Paris in 2006 has unveiled a new collection for men tagged Lagos Island. “The Lagos Island collection is a rare definition of high fashion, class and elegance from Tesslo Concepts,” explained creative director Tessy Oliseh-Amaize. Modeled by her husband Ohimai Godwin Amaize, popularly known as Mr. Fix Nigeria, the much-hyped Lagos Island collection was inspired by the concept of taking Nigeria global. According to Tessy, “I was at Isale Eko market in Lagos Island when I stumbled on these set of plaid fabrics that caught my attention. It was like that moment when your eyes open up to something you never knew existed before. The more I stared at the fabrics, the more it dawned on me that everything we need to give Versace, Armani, Gucci, D&G and the rest a run for their money is right here. I just felt this rush of anger and excitement at the same time and promised myself I was going to make a collection out of these fabrics that will make Nigerians really proud. That’s how the Lagos Island collection was born.” The Lagos Island suits as well as the native and casual attires are 100% made in Nigeria by Tesslo Concepts. “I think we really need to start looking inwards. When you look at the rust and dirt of the IsaleEko market, it is easy to be dismissive and say, can anything good come out of this place? But the truly creative economies of the world are driven by the philosophy that there’s gold in the garbage. Nigeria has some of the best and most talented fashion designers in the world. Tesslo Concepts is one of them. So let’s dispel this fiction that Nigerians must shop abroad before they are guaranteed of quality and class. You can look rich, fly and classy without shopping on Oxford Street or Melrose. This is the predominant idea of the Lagos Island collection by Tesslo Concepts”, Ohimai Godwin Amaize, Brand Spokesperson and Creative Adviser at Tesslo Concepts said. Speaking about the challenges of the fashion industry in Nigeria, the UK-trained and award-winning fashion designer called on the Federal Government to work closely with private sector investors to create a fashion plant where creative concepts by Nigerian fashion designers can be mass-produced.
