CO V E R // FATIMA ABDULRAHMAN DULRAHMAN
Educational Background I attended my primary school in Lagos at St. Andrew’s Anglican school and from there I proceeded to Government Girls Secondary School in Kontagora, Niger State. After my secondary education, I proceeded to College of Education, Minna also in Niger State, where I did my NCE and after that I joined the Federal Capital Territory Education Department. In 1992, I attended the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria to acquire a B.Ed., which qualified me to become a graduate teacher. After spending some years in my career, I proceeded again to the University of Abuja where I did my master’s degree in Educational Administration and Planning. Just this year again, I have enrolled again and I am currently pursuing my PhD in the University of Abuja. I also have an honourary degree from Cornerstone University, Jerusalem. Career background I am an educationist. I rose through the ranks here in the FCT. I have been a teacher since 1981 till date and once a teacher, always a teacher although now I think it is safer to say that I am a school administrator. I rose from a classroom teacher to a form teacher, senior mistress, special duties, senior boarding house mistress, vice principal before becoming a principal. My first appointment as a principal was in 2004, where I was posted to Government Girls Secondary School, Abaji here in Abuja. Then in 2008, I was transferred here to Government Secondary School, Kuje. In 2008, I became the ANCOPSS president of the FCT. After serving my term of four years, I became the national president of ANCOPSS and the first female elected national president. I am the 28th president. In the roll call of presidents of ANCOPSS since its inception in 1957, I am the first woman. As the president of ANCOPSS, I was a member on the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) board, National Examinations Council (NECO) and Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) and also, the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council. The board is responsible for drafting the national curriculum. I have also been a member of the committee of WAEC International Administration and Planning for four years. That is a summary of the journey so far from my early days. The aspiration of every teacher is to become a head teacher which I have been, and also opportune to lead the association of head teachers both at the state level, that is the federal capital territory, and at the national level and that being the first woman to do so. What was growing up like? We grew up with the guidance of almighty Allah and my parents. My father was the late Alhaji Musa Muhammad and my mother was Hajiya Rukayya Jummai Musa. I was born into a nuclear family of six. My father did not get western education but was very educated in Islamic education. He always said that he would train us to any level with his last resources. He did not want any of my children to be illiterate and he really worked towards achieving that. He was enlightened in politics and history of the country even though he did not attend western school system. He was a scholar in Islamic education. My mother wasn’t educated either and she was a full-time housewife. My father was a businessman. My family was an elite family. Challenges faced It has been very tasking but I want to give thanks to Allah for seeing me through all these years. Being a girl child,we were more vulnerable to overcoming that. My father was a disciplinarian and every time I moved out, that

Fatima Abdulrahman is the past national president of the All Nigerian Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) and presently the principal of Government Secondary School, Kuje, Abuja. The 51-year-old,who was born in the metropolitan city of Lagos, hails from Abaji Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). She is married and hasfive children. always guided me. If I misbehaved, what will I tell my father, that always guided me. I would rather die than to disobey my father. That fear was always there. Also, for somebody from the North and a woman, a woman tends to face partiality from the males and in the North there is this belief that women cannot attain leadership positions maybe because of cultural or religious beliefs. I faced that from my male counterparts. But thank God, they all understood and came back and gave their support and allowed me to excel and win the election for ANCOPSS president, among
others. Life lessons I have learnt in life that first of all, you must put the fear of God in your way of life. Then you must be focused and hardworking because hard work pays. So fear God, be focused and be hardworking. Aspirations growing up Growing up I never dreamt of becoming a teacher but man proposes and God disposes, as the saying goes. When I was in Form 3, my

FATIMA ABDULRAHMAN // dream was to be a pilot. That is why it is always good to always pray to God to choose the best for you because what we are looking at may not always be the best for you. So God chose that education is the best for me and I have risen well through the ranks. Childhood memories My primary school, where we played and every morning at the assembly we would sing the song of praise because like I said, I attended an Anglican school. And also at secondary school, I went to form 1 at the age of 10 and I moved away from Lagos and left my parents. I moved from the Southwest to the North Central. It was an all-girls boarding house so we really had fun. We didn’t have guidance counselors then, we had the school rulesand regulations to guide us. The fact is that school back then and school nowadays are not the same anymore. I miss that a lot. Joys of motherhood I have five children and watching them grow and become educated and achieve more than you have achieved in your life is all the joy a mother can ever wish or ask for. My prayer for my children is that they achieve higher than I have. Most cherished gift The best gift I have received is from my late friend who I lost this year. We attended the same secondary school and we had been together since then. It was a necklace and I will always cherish it very much. Favourite fashion accessories My jewelry. I cannot do without my rings, bangles, bracelets and earrings. My husband and I I didn’t actually meet him. My husband is my second cousin. His father met my dad and told him that they would “like the family ties to be strengthened by his son marrying his daughter”. We accepted each other. It was not a forced marriage. Most cherished attribute of his He is God fearing; he is very supportive and he is a very humble man. Best travel destination Saudi Arabia. It is a holy place and travelling there is an opportunity to become closer to God and ask him for whatever you wish. I have travelled far and wide but there is no place like Makkah and Madinah in Saudi Arabia. Best mode of relaxation I stay at home with my family. We sit together and spend quality time together. Favourite food It has to be tea. I love tea so much I can take so much in a day. People even call me buzuwa (Nigerien) because of how much I love tea. Style defination Anything that I am comfortable in but I love ankara and native fabrics. I love wearing gowns. And I love dressing smartly and decent. Favourite fashion designer I am a fashion designer of myself so I don’t have one. Favourite perfume, designer bag and shoes The Red Door and Provocative Woman by Elizabeth Arden. I love Ceruti bags and shoes. Mum’s advice that stuck TAMBARI SUNDAY, O C TO B E R 23, 2016
IT HAS TO BE TEA. I LOVE TEA SO MUCH I CAN TAKE SO MUCH IN A DAY. PEOPLE EVEN CALL ME BUZUWA (NIGERIEN) BECAUSE OF HOW MUCH I LOVE TEA. I should be God fearing and be contended with what I have and that has been my philosophy of life. Advice for women who aspire to be like you My advice is that they should be focused and hardworking rking like I said before. Hard work always pays off. You cannot be lazy and say you want to enjoy all the pleasures of life. You need to make ke sacrifices in life. As for the young ones, they should be determined. Whatever you ou are pursuing, make sure you aim for success in whatever you are doing. If you try your best and you do not achieve eve it,, God did id not not destine des esti tine ne you for it. Favourite colour, weather, sport and car My favourite rite colour is blue, no matter whatt shade of blue it is. Favourite car ar is Toyota and weather; I enjoy cool weather. As for sport it is badminton. Favourite day of the week and why Saturday because I get to rest and sometimes, ometimes, attend weddings dings and naming ceremonies. emonies. looking youthful and also my diet, I eat a lot of fruits. Role models My mother and then Hajiya Ramatu Awwal Ibrahim, the wife to the Emir of Suleja. She was my boss but she is retired now. I taught under her for nine years and she is like a sister and a mother to me. What I would tell my younger me I have no regrets and I have lived a moderate life and I think my life turned out fine. Legacy The girl child. I am a lover of girl child education. There were vulnerable girls that were taken out of school but who I took back on scholarship and sponsored their education. And in Abaji, I convinced the then chairman of thearea council to award scholarship to girls so they can complete their education. The essence of schooling is for you to have access, to be retained in school and to complete your education. These are the key factors. So now a lot of them have graduated from school with over 200 scholarships awarded to girls in Abaji Area Council.

The two complaints could be of the same aetiology or independent of one another. Any history of delayed period before the heavy
menstrual flow? Have you been examined and scan conducted for possibility of uterine fibroids especially sub mucous that results

need to do hormonal tests especially prolactin assay. Appropriate drug will also be given to stop the breast milk discharge.

PREGNANT BUT NOTHING IS SEEN I have an issue with my health and wish to have your advice. I am 30 years and a mother of 2. After my last pregnancy in 2013 I went for family planning (implanon) for 3 years. Last month I took in but still bleeding. Below is the scan result I did on the 15-10-2016. PELVIC SCAN REPORT: Real time transabdominal scan with additional transvaginal views reveal a normal size uterus. The AP measures 4.8cm. the outline is smooth. There is no focal mass in the myometrium. The endometrial plate is normal size and uniform in echo. It measures about 14mm. The POD is empty. Both ovaries are normal in size. There is no abnormal adnexal mass. Assessments: Normal Scan. I am worried because I don’t know why I should be bleeding. Just scared of losing the pregnancy. Amina, Kaduna I am happy that not only abdominal scan was done but also transvaginal scan. Did you do pregnancy test? Was was the result? If the pregnancy test was negative now, then with this scan you have no problem. Most likely the pregnancy has been aborted as evidenced by the vaginal bleeding. If you are still worried do another pregnancy test now. If it is positive there are likely possibilities. Could it be early pregnancy that could not be picked with scan yet?
In this case repeat scan in a week’s time. Or it can still be complete miscarriage because pregnancy test becomes negative between one to two weeks after miscarriage. Another possibility is ectopic pregnancy. In which case close monitoring is required because of danger of ruptured ectopic which is a life threatening condition if this is suspected you have to be admitted and supervised by a Gynaecologist until the situation is resolved. That is not completely true. Though, we are careful about giving normal saline to hypertensive patients but there are many instances in which normal saline is one of the intravenous fluid of choice. For example in pregnancy with severe preeclampsia or eclampsia though the blood pressure is high or sometimes very high, Ringers lactate or normal saline are still the fluid of choice. You need to maintain the blood volume with isotonic saline. Also in case of diabetic ketoacidosis even though the patient may have high blood pressure normal saline can still be given. There are a lot of wrong advices going on nowadays about medical conditions therefore we need to be careful or better still always seek expert advice. I also observe that some will say they read it online but wrong and sometimes dangerous stamens are taken literally. We should not forget computer is garbage in garbage out. The internet will not distinguish between expert opinion posted to it or half educated advice sent. We should google and read online but expert direct examination and opinions are still penitent and needful.

In places where this is not available urine pregnancy test in neat and serial dilution is diagnostic. I will suggest you see a Gynaecologist for proper assessment
