Huda Fadoul Abacha on turning her passion into reality interview by PRISCA EKOKUJE-EMADU& HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU
Huda Fadoul Abacha is from Borno State. She has four sisters and two brothers. Her father is Dr. Fadoul Khaloud and my mother is Hajiya Fatima. She is the second child and is married to Sadik Abacha. She is the CEO of Huda Couture. She shares her story with Tambari.
Educational background I went to the University of Abuja where I studied Biology. I then served at the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) here in Maitama, Abuja. How did you get to where you are? Well, I would say that it is definitely God’s help that has allowed me get here, and also hard work and determination and of course a passion for what I do. I would never have thought that I would be a fashion designer. What started as a hobby is now a niche I have created for myself. It started with people coming to me for fashion advice because of my style and the way I design what I wear. I was flattered when my sister took a risk by allowing me to style her and her bridesmaids for her wedding. Luckily, I didn’t disappoint them. Let’s just say I aimed higher from there and the rest is history. Challenges I think running a business in Nigeria comes with its own challenges because the business environment is very uncertain. But there are also human capital challenges that can affect customer satisfaction and relations. So, finding a balance between profitability and meeting ends smoothly matters, because production is affected by lack of electricity and the increase in dollar rate is not in our favour. Best part of my job The best part of my job is being able to imagine a beautiful piece of art in a form of a dress and watch it come to life. Seeing a smile on a satisfied client’s face. I am also grateful to be able to do what I love. Aspirations growing up Well, I will love to say a fashion designer but unfortunately not at the beginning. Being a designer was a hobby, I always thought I would be a civil engineer but instead got a degree in Biology. Anyway I still ended up being a fashion designer. I think it is safe to say that fashion has always been second nature to me. How I met my husband I’ve always known him because we have been family friends for a long time so we’ve met a couple of times since I was 13 or 14 years old. Finally in 2008, I met him again and from there we became friends, from friends we got engaged and now we’re married and the rest is history. Most cherished attribute of his His honesty. He is honest to a fault. Sometimes he even tells me things that I don’t even want to know. But I appreciate it because with him, I know I will always get the truth and I feel that it is a quality that is very rare to find. He is also very caring and very generous and, all in all, he is a hands on dad now and a hands on husband. He is very understanding and he supports my career and he encourages me to do more and aim higher. He encouraged me to expand my business and make it what it is today. Motherhood experience I have always dreamt of the day I would become a mother. It was very glamorous in my mind but I’ve come to learn that my entire life will be dedicated to my baby. Being a mother is the most rewarding and greatest gift I have ever been given. No matter how much you read and educate yourself on how to be a great mother, there is no magical formula to it and you learn as you go. You have to give up something else apart from your sanity. So expect to give up a few hours of sleep, but it’s all so worth it. It’s very tough at first, but I am eventually finding my balance, and it gets easier with time, so I’m staying focused. Seeing my son is enough joy for me. It makes my day. Seeing him laughing and jumping when he sees me lights me up inside.

HUDA FADOUL ABACHA // I LOVE THE RAINY SEASON. THE WEATHER IS COOL. I SLEEP BETTER BECAUSE THE SOUND OF RAIN IS VERY SOOTHING AND EVERYWHERE LOOKS GREENER AND BEAUTIFUL
Things on my wish list The first thing is that I want to get away because I am so tired. You know when you travel all you want to do is come back and when you’re back it gets so stressful and you want to get away again. So I wish I can travel right now to somewhere very quiet where there is no phone or internet. Just relaxing and doing nothing. Then I wish I could get someone exactly like me, a clone so that she can do half of my work because sometimes it gets so hectic and busy. I wish there were 48 hours in a day and not 24 so that I’ll have more time to do what I need to do and meet up with all my demands; be there for my family and for work too. I also don’t like to dwell on material things so I can’t say shoes and bags are on my wish list. I also wish for a complete make up box with all the makeup products I want because I love make up. Favourite fashion items I love veils. I have veils in all colours. I can’t do without them. And earrings too.
TAMBARI SUNDAY, AU G U S T 28, 2016
Favourite fashion designers Zuhair Murad, Elie Saab, Sadek Majed and Michael Cinco. They are my fashion icons. They inspire me. I want to be like them. Favourite designer shoes and bags I love all shoes and bags. From Gucci, Nine West to Aldo. Favourite perfume Tobacco Vanilla and Amber by Tom Ford.
Favourite holiday spot Dubai. I love Dubai. I feel at home there. I find everything that I’m looking for. It is like a one stop place to buy everything I need for my shop. For me, when I travel I like to have fun, shop for myself and also shop for my shop.
Beauty routine I wash my face as much as I can and I moisturise. I never sleep with make up on and I only wear it when I need to so that my face can breathe. I mostly use eye pencil, lipgloss and I’m good. I also stick to one product that works for me.
Favourite weather I love the rainy season. The weather is cool. I sleep better because the sound of rain is very soothing and everywhere looks ner and beautiful. greener
First app I check in the morning and at bedtime Well it used to be Instagram but now it is Snapchat.
Definition of style Style is personal. That is how I see it. Personal in the sense that it defines you. What you are made of by how you put yourself together. Simple.
Mum’s advice that stuck with you What is meant for you will always find you. If you don’t get it then it was never meant for you. It is advice that I will definitely pass onto my own children
Favourite colour My favourite colour is black.
Favourite music that is always on replay Pick Up by Adekunle Gold and Mama by Kiss Daniel. They are constantly on repeat in my car, house, office, everywhere.

As a fashion designer, what I wouldn’t be caught wearing A crop top and palazzo pants with slits in the front. Being a fashion designer, there are certain stuff that you cannot wear and you also cannot afford to be caught wearing the wrong thing anywhere. I have certain standards to live up to.
How I relax I read books, watch movies and drink tea.
Balancing work and home Balancing family and work is never easy. However, I set my priorities and if I had to choose, family always comes first to me. I make sure that when I’m home with my family, I am present at that moment and spend quality time with them. That’s the key to everything, being able to separate work and personal life but still able to do both without dropping one for the other. Also, I’m lucky being the CEO of my own company, it gives me the flexibility with time and I have a great support system around me - my family who are constantly there for me and a hands on dad.

GOING OUTSIDE THE BOX WHEN DECORATING YOUR BEDROOM by HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU
Y
our bedroom is the one room in your home that you can be selfish with when it comes to decorating. It’s your sanctuary, your private space, it’s where you can relax and do whatever you please. And if your personal style happens to be unique, then the best place that you can portray that uniqueness and that side of you is in your bedroom. So why limit yourself to the conventional style of decorating when you can go outside the box? From low and layered beds to towering, perfectly pulledtogether looks, your bed not only anchors the room, it anchors the overall look and feel. A stately canopy bed with coordinated linens may be perfect for someone
who has a more strict choice. The headboard alone can make a big difference if it stands out. You can also switch up your bedroom with diverse lighting and mixing different materials and textures when it comes to the curtains, rugs and the bedding. Look for different colours, patterns and materials or anything that reflects your style. Mixing and matching sizes of pillows, shams, and duvet covers with elegant throws give you endless options to customize your bedroom how you choose and overall giving your bedroom that unconventional style you love. Sungbo Eredo; Nigeria’s Hidden Wonder by HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU
B
uilt over 1000 years ago and taking two centuries to complete, Sungbo Eredo is the lost gem of a city with a system of walls and ditches that surround the Yoruba town of Ijebu-Ode in Ogun state. It is said to have been built in honour of the Ijebu noblewoman, Bilikisu Sungbo. It is also believed that it was built by thousands who were most likely slaves with the use of only basic tools and education The Eredo is linked to the Queen of Sheba, a story retold in both the Bible and the Qur’an. The Old Testament version recounts the Queen of Sheba sending a caravan of gold, ivory and other goods from her kingdom to King Soloman while the Qur’an tells of an Ethiopian incense trader and sun worshiper named Bilqis who converts to Islam. According to local legend, the Eredo is a monument to a wealthy, childless widow named Bilikisu Sungbo. Sungbo’s grave is located near the sight of the Eredo, inspiring pilgrimages by locals to the site each year. Other shrines have also been erected near the Eredo and locals often visit them to leave offerings. Women are also known to visit the ruins to pray that they will have an easy time conceiving children and that their children will be protected. Muslims and Christians too have also
been known to visit the site. During construction, it required more earth to be moved than the Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. It is more than 160 km in circumference with certain sections reaching 20 meters in height. It encloses an area of around 40 km north to south and 35 km east to west. The Eredo is said to have been built as a defense mechanism. The structure coincides with legends of the Queen of Sheba and it was thought to have been built as a personal memorial to her. It now however stands, slowly crumbling in its ancient beauty, overtaken by the forest which has grown to overlay the cracks, crevasses and ditches. It is reputed to be the largest single pre-colonial monument in Africa although now it is mostly hidden by rainforest and covered by trees and creepers making it look as if you have stumbled on an unknown treasure. Part of what has been uncovered by archeologists so far is a three-story structure that has been identified as a type of palace that once held royalty. Inside were found the remains of living quarters, courtyards and shrines. It is still not completely certain, but there are theories that there are other important buildings and parts of the structure hidden around the dense forest within the area.

Tips and tricks for fuller lips by HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU
A
pair of fuller and plumper lips is something that some of us wish we had so that our lipstick will pop when we apply it. While true lip size is determined by genetic factors, there are actually many trick that can give you fuller and lustrous lips. We have picked a few make up tricks that you can use to get instantaneous more gorgeous and radiant set of lips. Brush off flakes: Because flaky lips reflect less light, dry lips could be making your lips look smaller. To get rid of flakes, brush them lightly with a toothbrush. This also boosts circulation, giving your lips a boost of colour making them much pinker. Use a concealer: Pat some concealer on your lips and spread it a little over your lip line. This will make your lipstick go on closer to the colour in the tube, and make your lips look larger. Dab lip gloss in the middle of your lips: Use clear lip gloss or a shade close to your lipstick colour. Apply some lip gloss in the middle of both of your lips. The shimmery
product picks up light, making your pout look fuller. Use lip liner outside your natural lip line: Lip liner works miracles when it comes to making lips appear bigger. Use a lip liner that matches your lipstick, and trace just slightly outside your natural lip line. Fill your lips in with lipstick, or just use the liner for your whole pout. Use concealer to hide your lip line for an even bolder look. Avoid dark lipsticks: Rocking nude lipsticks or pale pink pout isn’t just trendy, it will make your lips look naturally larger. Dark colours flatten the appearance of your mouth. Use two different nude lip colours: Apply one shade all over your mouth, and the lighter colour (or even a white lip crayon) in the middle of your lips. If you have a full top lip but a smaller bottom lip (or vice versa), only apply the lighter shade to the opposite lip. It will even your lips out, and make them both look fuller.

TINY HOLES ON MY CHEEK I have some tiny holes on my cheek, I’m confused whether the pimples on my face is responsible or is it an infection. Some part of my lips have started having colour patch, I have pink lips, is this normal sir? Chioma Have you been expressing the pimples out frequently? If so, then the holes in the cheek may be what is called ice-pick scar from that. The possibility of it been as a result of infection is low. One can only talk authoritatively after proper history and examination. I will suggest you see a dermatologist for both the holes on the cheek and the colour patches on the lips. We normally discouraged pressing out pimples with hand, it can leave dark spots and holes too.
CAN I HAVE UNPROTECTED INTERCOURSE NOW? My wife had Hepatitis B but received one vaccination against it I did not complete it. Can I meet with her or I should wait to complete it first? Anonymous It is better you wait and complete the vaccination before you start unprotected sexual intercourse. If you have to then use mechanical barrier like condom for now.
SEVERE MENSTRUAL CRAMPS I have been having menstrual pains for a day or two. What drug can I take to reduce menstrual pains. I am 15 years. Faiza, Kaduna This is what is called primary dysmenorrhea. That is menstrual pain that start with menarche or around the period. Most of the time the cause of this is unknown unlike the secondary amenorrhea which start in later years of reproductive life or after giving births to kids. The secondary dysmenorrhea usually have an underlying cause like adenomyosis and uterine polyps. Any of the analgesics or pain killers will do. It could be the piroxicam, diclofenac group or any other suitable analgesics. You can see your family physician.
IS THE DELAY AGE RELATED? I removed my IUD that is family planning since May and I have been trying for a baby since then but no pregnancy yet. What could be the reason? Is it due to my age? I am thirty-seven years old. I have three kids already and the youngest will be three by September. May till August is just about three months, this is too short to worry. There is no delay yet. And at this time, it cannot be age. I will advise to be a little be more patient, ensure regular sexual intercourse and all will be well. Since you are thirty-seven, if after six months to one year, there is no conception then see your gynaecologist for investigations.
CAN SURGERY DELAY MENSTRUATION? I gave birth last year through CS till now I have not seen my menstruation. I just stopped breast-feeding last month. This is my first baby. Please I need your advice. Mrs Canus, Lagos
When last year did you give birth? How old is the baby now? But generally it is not unusual for women not to menstruate during the period of breast-feeding. What you are having is likely a case of Lactational amenorrhea that is not seeing menses due to breast-feeding. Relax watch for the next two months. If no menses then you can see your family physician or gynaecologist. You should also watch out if despite stopping breast-feeding milk still comes out from your breast.
