What you need to know about diamonds by PRISCA EKOKUJE-EMADU & HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU

A

s the popular saying goes, “diamond is a woman’s best friend.’’ One thing that comes to mind when trying to buy diamonds or any other kind of ornament is quality. Not everybody can identify original diamonds; hence some need some form of assistance when trying to purchase one. In getting diamond accessories, here are four rules to bear in mind. - Colour: Diamonds are known to be colourless. Even when placed on a white background, the stone is still loose and colourless. However, diamonds can be seen in other colours. - Clarity: This refers to the visual characteristics of a diamond, which comprises of both the internal and external parts of

the piece. These are called inclusions and blemishes. - Cut: The diamond cut is the most d important. This gives it a glittering sparkle and prismatic colour. In a well-cut diamond, light d enters the top as if it were absorbing light and spitting it out in fireworks. - Carat: Carat weight is a widely mistaken it component of diamond buying. Carat is a unit ne of weight measurement. It does not determine how dazzling or scintillating the diamond is. It only determines the weight and cost of the d diamond. However, the carat of your diamond does determine how attractive it is. When next you want to buy a diamond nd accessory, bear these four simple rules in mind and you are sure to get a priceless piece.

MARIYA AMINU TAMBUWAL // My philosophy My philosophy of life is simple - One has to stay low and be humble, keep it simple and don’t expect too much from people. Also, enjoy what you have, no matter how little. In life, everything should be appreciated. A simple life is a beautiful life. Best holiday destination My favourite holiday destination is London. It is a diverse and exciting city with some of the world’s best sight-seeing attractions and activities. I also love all the Arab countries, especially Saudi Arabia. How I relax Well, l relax by retiring to bed early. For me, going to bed to rest at night after the stress of the day is the best form of relaxation anyone can ask for. Best sports Interestingly, I love football. I enjoy watching it with the kids. Favourite colour, weather and car Green is my best colour. I enjoy the rainy season. As for cars, I don’t have any favourite as long as it takes me from one place to another. My Favourite meal I love all the traditional delicacies, but moi-moi is my best. I wouldn’t mind eating it all the time. Oh, I also love watermelon; its one fruit I can’t do without. My definition of style As far as I am concerned, style is putting on what fits you perfectly. Style should be what makes you look good and at the same time comfortable. I love the abaya. I feel fully covered wearing the abaya or the Moroccan gown. These two fashion pieces can never let me down when it comes to style. Favourite designer I have so many fashion designers, but Hanayen Abaya in Dubai is one designer I really cherish because of the concepts he gives his abaya. Back here in Nigeria, the Afrik Abaya is one designer I’m beginning to like because of their creativity. Favourite perfume, shoes and bags I love Oud collections. They are my best perfumes, be it Arabian, French or any other. As long as its Oud, you can be sure I will love it. I love Salvatore Ferragamo bags. For shoes, Giuseppe Zanotti is classy and simple for my liking.

Hajiya Mariya with husband and children

Words from mum that stuck My mum taught me to have trust in myself, be selfconfident and always down-to-earth. And that has really helped shape who I am today. Favourite day of the week Friday is a very short day, and as a Muslim I have so much respect for the day. Beauty routine I don’t have any beauty routine in particular, but I exfoliate my face with honey, milk and lemon once in a week. Staying fit Well, I don’t have any secret to staying fit, but I maintain a healthy diet by drinking a lot of water and taking a lot of fruits. Role of women in the society Psychologically, women are not equal to men, but women have a better role to play in the society as they are the bedrock of the society. As the saying goes, “To educate a woman is to educate the nation.” Achievements as a wife and mother My achievements in life are numerous to mention. However, my best achievement so far is raising my kids to the admiration of the society. My first child, who takes after his father, will soon graduate as a lawyer. Very soon, my second daughter will be getting married, which is the joy of every mother. I have also impacted the lives of many women in my locality and the state in general.

INTERESTINGLY, I LOVE FOOTBALL. I ENJOY WATCHING IT WITH THE KIDS.. TAMBARI SUNDAY, AU G U S T 7, 2016

Lapel; the art of manliness by PRISCA EKOKUJE-EMADU

E

veryday fashion is re-evolving and new ways of remaining on the fashion radar emanates. Women are known to adorn their attire with brooches, today men have also found a means of doing the same, only that this time it is done with lapels. The male folk now rock this accessory on both formal and traditional outfits. Some wear it as a replacement for where the tie or bow tie is worn, while others just place it on their chest. This is one accessory that we must confess looks great when worn by men. If you are yet to join this new style of dressing, then the time is now. Lapels are the new way to show manliness.

ouscous is a tiny grain that looks like acha (fonio). There are different ways of preparing it, including steaming. When cooked, it becomes lighter in nature. This delicacy is commonly found in northern Nigeria. Couscous is very easy to prepare. It is a good source of vitamins, and it contains low fat, complex carbohydrate and protein. Couscous can be served at breakfast, lunch and dinner. INGREDIENTS - Tomatoes - Couscous - Seasoning - Meat, liver or smoked fish - Green beans, peas, pepper, carrots or spring onions - Grounded crayfish - Chilli pepper - Onions - Salt to taste

PROCEDURE 1. Wash and cook meat and liver, then set aside. 2. Heat up a little amount of water and pour into a bowl containing the couscous; allow it to soak up the water. 3. Drain out any remaining water with

a sieve (remember, you are not to allow it become too soft such that it turns into a paste). 4. Chop all your vegetables and keep them aside. 5. Heat up vegetable oil and fry the tomatoes together with onions. 6. Add the chopped vegetables, crayfish, pepper, salt and seasoning cubes and stir (if you have dry or Mackerel fish, you can break it into tiny pieces and add to the content so that when you finally pour the couscous and stir, the fish will be spread to every part of the pot). 7. You can also add the meat stock if the content is too dry. 8. Add the couscous and stir round the pot, then allow the remaining liquid to dry up completely and serve.

When the butter stops foaming, add the honey and

chicken wings and fry until browned on each side, for about 5 minutes. 6. Continue cooking the wings, turning them over, often to coat them as the glaze reduces. Cook until the wings are sticky. 7. Then garnish with sesame seeds and serve.

CAN I STILL HAVE A CHILD AT 46? I am forty-six-year-old with five children. My last child was four years ago the baby died after four days of birth. I missed my period last month. If found to be pregnant, is it safe and can I deliver a child at my present age? Hadiza, Kano

Y

es, you can deliver by yourself since you have delivered five times before. But you have to do your antenatal preferably under an obstetrician and ensure delivery in a hospital with good supervision. The answer would have been no if this is your first baby that is an elderly primigravida. Since you have delivered more than five times you are a grand multiparous woman. One of the challenges faced is the issue of postpartum haemorrhage due to uterine atony that is excessive bleeding after delivery of the baby and placental. Proper steps must be taken in labour and immediately after delivery to prevent this. Let me emphasize that there are other problems that has to be looked out for during pregnancy. Women over forty years and are pregnant are at risk of these conditions. Medical

complications like hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and diabetes mellitus must be look out for. Do not assume that you have no complaints or you have done it several times before you must try and attend antenatal clinic regularly. Your blood pressure will be checked and action taken early if there is any rise in blood pressure. Also the risk of diabetes mellitus in pregnancy increases with age. After this delivery do not make attempt to give birth again, ensure you seek family planning options and adopt one.

Hepatitis carrier; any way out? I am hepatitis B positive carrier. I could not afford medication. Please I will like to be free or have complete treatment of HBV antigen. Is there a way out? Idris Bauchi

I

t is unfortunate that the treatment for Hepatitis B is very expensive. Let me also mention that it is not curative but minimize the chances of complications like liver cirrhosis developing. While looking at possibility of getting for proper treatment, I will encourage you not to panic. Being a carrier of hepatitis B virus does not equate to the complications occurring. If it a place where the NHIS – National Health Insurance Scheme is well developed this would not have been a problem at all. Though we appreciate that it has started in Nigeria but the speed of maturing

to a proper NHIS to all Nigerian is still slow. The bulk of the masses that need it most are yet to be captured. Health is wealth. I will use this medium to implore our erudite minister of health to bring in policy through the legislative and the executive so that our NHIS can go to the next level so that people like Idris could have hope and focus on more productive things. In case any good meaning Nigerian want to support this young student in the treatment you can contact the editor of Tambari please.

BOILS ON SENSITIVE AREAS OF MY BODY My sexual organ is small and I have boils on it. When I meet with my partner I release too quickly. Please what do I do? Mahmood, Okene

C

oncerning the boils you may be having a sexually transmitted infection. You may need to see your family physician but preferably a Urologist for treatment for both you and your partner. The issue of premature ejaculation will also be addressed at the same time. Well the size of the sexual organ is not the most

important thing, as most times the size of manhood does not equate to sexual satisfaction. Though there are cream said to increase the size and also plastic surgery but I will advise that it may not be necessary. Discuss the issue with your family physician and to educate you on how to satisfy your partner sexually rather than focus on size.

When can I get pregnant? How long after miscarriage can I get pregnant? Chichi, Abuja You can get pregnant after three months at least. This would enable you to recover from the last pregnancy and also allow menses to return.

Please, we encourge all who send questions or contributions to include at least their first name and town or city. Readers are also advised to copy the Tambari email address above while writing in. Thank you - Editor TAMBARI SUNDAY, AU G U S T 7, 2016

he Sharo (flogging) festival is held by the Jafur Fulani twice a year - during the dry season and Eid el-Kabir. The festival is a test of bravery in which young men flog each other to the point of utmost endurance. It also shows that a man has come of age and is ready to get married. The Sharo festival begins with bare-chested contestants, usually young, unmarried men, approaching the centre ring, accompanied by an entourage of young girls. Following this, the challenger comes to the centre of the stage brandishing a strong, supple cane to scare his opponent. After a display of intense competition, which attracts excitement at its highest pitch, the flogging begins. The

challenger flogs his opponent without an ounce of sympathy. The opponent withstands the flogging, sometimes drawing blood, without wincing or showing pain. Just like every other contemporary game, the Sharo festival also has referees who are saddled with the responsibility to ensure fair flogging. The opponent is motivated with the support of family members, friends and well-wishers and their readiness to offer gifts and other bounties to him if he was able to withstand the pain till the end. The festival, which is usually accompanied with drumming, singing and dancing, is very lively. With additional information from the internet
