FATIMA TOGBE // Who is Fatima Togbe? I am Nigerian, Beninese, French and American by birth. My father is french/ Beninese and my mother is Nigerian. I was born on August 5, so I will be expecting a birthday gift from Tambari for asking me about my birthday.

CO V E R

What growing up was like Growing up was amazing. I had the opportunity to travel a lot, experience different cultures, explore my growing passions. All of these gave me a greater appreciation and respect for cultures and ideologies different from mine.

Educational background I studied Business at the University of Maryland. An insight into your career background Well, with regards to fashion and publishing business, I started off as a model. While modeling, I worked for Estee Lauder and Clinique. I also own a graphic design and media publishing company called Kimera Media. These experiences definitely gave me all the tools I needed to start Hayati. Why a Muslim magazine, tell us about it? Reading Harpers Bazaar was really frustrating because I would see a D&G dress and think, ‘Wow! I love that, but it’s too short.’ I thought it was time to have something that I could identify with. The magazine is aimed at female Muslims between the ages of 21 and 35: modern, educated, fashion-forward and trendy, with a sound foundation in their love and dedication to Islam. I really was not hoping for much because I was mainly trying to fill a void. Initially, Hayati started as a basic blog, then turned into a predominantly Instagram page, and before I knew it, I was publishing full-blown magazines. The feedback has been amazing, masha’Allah. I am always shocked when I meet people who read or follow Hayati, and I thank Allah (SWT) for giving me the strength and patience to continue pushing Hayati every day

Lessons life has taught me The major and somewhat reoccurring lesson life has thought me is that everything has its time. Rushing will not make it come any sooner and delaying will not avoid it. My aspirations growing up Growing up, I wanted to be a doctor, architect, singer, fashion designer, actress, lawyer, model, writer and so much more.

I LOVE DRINKING TEA AND WATCHING SERIES ON MY COMPUTER. IT’S A LIFE OF BLISS. Fond childhood memories I miss I miss going to the beach every weekend with my family and friends. Life challenges Too many to count, but just the right amount to be thankful for, Alhamdulillah. What my typical day is like The moment I wake up I am on my phone checking my emails, messages, social media accounts and website statistics. Once I am done with breakfast, I am in front of my computer working till about midnight or 2am like I am right now. I take breaks to eat snack and run errands, but generally, I spend my days in front of my computer. Most cherished gift My formidable life, which I would love to thank Allah (SWT) for, and my parents of course. Three fashion accessories I always have on me I always have a ring on, earrings and my purse.

Best travel destination I think I will say Santorini. Best mode of relaxation I love drinking tea and watching series on my computer. It’s a life of bliss.

I DON’T BELIEVE I AM ANYTHING TO ASPIRE TO YET. I AM STILL A WORK IN PROGRESS AND I HAVE SO MUCH MORE I WANT TO ACCOMPLISH IN LIFE. HOWEVER, I DO WANT TO LET WOMEN KNOW THAT THE ONLY DISTANCE BETWEEN THEM AND THEIR DREAMS IS THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS IT.

Last good book read and how it impacted on me The last book that impacted on me was about five years ago. It is called Confessions of an Economic Hitman. Lately, I have been reading more books for pleasure, so they have not had much impact on me. However, ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ was a nice read. It was interesting to know that Asians live very similar lives to us with regards to pressures of marriage and childbearing. I just started reading ‘Nice Is Just A Place In France’ and anticipate it to be an average read for the most part. My best food I love amala and ogbono soup made with seafood. My definition of style and type of style I am comfortable in Style is very unique and it’s ultimately an expression of how you feel in your own skin and how you want others to perceive you. Favourite fashion designer Definitely, Dolce and Gabbana

Favourite perfume, designer bag and shoes Perfume (Chanel No5), Bag (anything Versace), Shoes (Louboutin and Ferragamo) Mum’s advice that stuck with me. Life will keep teaching you lessons until you learn them Advice for ladies who aspire to be like me I don’t believe I am anything to aspire to yet. I am still a work in progress and I have so much more I want to accomplish in life. However, I do want to let women know that the only distance between them and their dreams is the first step towards it. My favourite sport, colour and weather I have never been much of a sports fan. I am too much of a creative fan. My favouritecolour is red because it is a dominating colour. I love hot and dry weather because I get easily cold. My favourite day of the week and why I work online, and weekends are just like any other because the website still needs to run. So I don’t really have a favourite day. However, if I were to choose, I would say Wednesday because I was born on one.

Keeping fit I actually do nothing to keep fit. Life achievements I started, own and run an international magazine.

Photo: Imagio Photography Photo: TCD Images

Beauty routine I go through phases, depending on the way I feel, the amount of time I have on my hand and whether my skin needs tender love and care. However, on a good day, I use a sugar face scrub, wash with Clinique blemish solution face wash, clean with boots face toner, add a moisture surge serum and seal it with Vitamin E oil or any other face lotion.

Awards I have won several academic awards and was listed in the Forbes Afrique (French) rising business owners. Role models in life My mom What I would tell a younger me Growing up isn’t a race, take your time and save as much as you can. One fashion accessory I cherish till date I am really bad in keeping jewellery, so I don’t have anything that dates back longer than three to four years, if not two.

aist belts are stylish accessories that add up to various outfits. And they can be an easy way to make that simple outfit look stunning. A waist belt doesn’t just hold the shirt or trousers; it also gives shape and beauty to it. The waist belt can be worn on gowns, skirts, pants bea and lots more. In accessorising with belts, some facts are to be considered. con • Wear a belt that goes with your body shape. If your waist is short, go for thin belts • Match your waist belt with a touch of the colour of your outfit. • Simply wrap a skinny belt around an open cardigan or a slightly big shirt. Use it to give some shape to your dress.

Excessive menstrual flow I am thirty years old with four kids, I have been having irregular bleeding for the last four months. I was given primolut and it will stop then start again. Can you recommend any drug for me? Zainab, Katsina

W O M E N’ S H E A LT H Dr Nathaniel Adewole Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada - FCT. MOBILE: 0803 803 9182 EMAIL: nadewole2013@gmail.com

Have you seen a Gynaecologist? Have you been tested to know the cause? Menorrhagia oe excessive menstruation is common among women of reproductive years. Possible causes include: submucous fibroid or endometrial polyps; endometrial hyperplasia, hormone secreting tumours of the ovary. Pregnancy test must be done too because of abortive process and the possibility of Gestational Trophoblastic Disease ( GTD ). Other possibilities include cacinomatous changes like endometrial cancer. When all tests couldn’t reveal the cause it is called dysfunctional uterine bleeding ( DUB ). I will suggest you see a Gynaecologist for proper history taken, physical examination and tests. Sometimes treatment with combined oral contraceptive pills may surfice.

Two months pregnant with appendicitis I am two months pregnant and the doctor says I have appendicitis. He wants to operate it, is it safe? Ayo In as much as we try to avoid operation in early pregnancy as much as possible, sometimes it becomes necessary. If the acute appendicitis responds to conservative management with antibiotics then operation can be delayed till after the pregnancy is more than thirteen weeks or three months. But if the pains persists then it is better to operate to avoid ruptured appendicitis which could be a catastrophic event. Please discuss further with your physician, if it is compulsory the operation could be done. I am sure with proper management including good hydration and tocolytic, there will be no problem and pregnancy can continue.

NO MENSTRUATION AT SIXTEEN I am sixteen and yet to start menstruating. What is wrong with me? Please doctor advise me on what to do. Aisha, Minna

H

ave you started having development of secondary sexual characteristics like breast changes and development, axillary and pubic hair changes. Most youg girls start menstruating before sixteen-years. If a girl has not start menstruating nor have secondary sexual characteristics by fourteen years then she should be tested. But if the secondary sexual characteristics is present one should wait till the girl is sixteen years. At this time the diagnosis is primary amenorrhea. Causes include genital tract obstruction in which case she has started menstruating but because of the obstruction like imperforate hymen, the menstrum could not flow outside. In this case usually there could be cyclical abdominal pains which is an indication there was shedding of the endometrium but could not be seen. There could also be abdominal swelling due to enlarge uterus from accumulated blood. In case of cases like imperforate hymen especially if low will be obvious with the bulging hymen. Simple cruciate incision will solve the problem. But as

the obstruction become higher up the more difficult to diagnose and the more complex the operation to correct it. Other causes include chromosomal abnormality like Turner’s syndrome which might have resulted in things like premature ovarian failure. In cases like this continuous hormone replacement therapy might be the solution to sustain monthly menstruation. Other case in which the person is phenotypically female but genetically male might be revealed during tests for primary amenorrhea. This means that though in physical structure appear to be female but the genes are male XY. That is why buccal smear is relevant in investigating primary amenorrhea. Laparoscopy is also necessary to look for presence or absence of ovaries and uterus. Occasional undecended testis has been identified in the cause of laparoscope. I will recommend that your parents take you to consult a Gynaecologist.

Please, kindly include your full name and where you are writing from when sending your questions. Thank you.

Nok village: A tourist site to preserve R by PRISCA EMADU

A sculpture dug from the ground

ight from our days in history class, one name or location that was on the lips of our teachers was the Nok sculpture. Nok is the name of a village in Kaduna State, and is located 160 kilometers northeast of Baro. The Nok village is known significantly for its sculptures, which were found by archeologists a long time ago. The village used to be inhabited by people before their mysterious disappearance in 200 AD. The inhabitants of the village made some of the oldest and culturally interesting sculptures found in Africa. The archeologists who surfed the area discovered stone tools, rock paintings, human skeletons and other sculptures. The discoveries of

this ancient art made researchers believe that the Nok culture has been in existence for 2500 years. People can’t give details on why these sculptures were made, but theories have proved that they were made as charms to prevent crop failure, illness and infertility. A visit to this remarkable cultural site will give you a view of the ancient times and an insight to the historical values of our forefathers. It gives you a good understanding of the olden times and serves as a tourist site. It is preserved and maintained to further tell its story to children yet unborn. This is one tourist site to be preserved by its habitats and government.

House of Deola launches first fashion series

T

he House of Deola is presenting the first of its Komole Kandids fashion series. Analysts say it is simply stunning and taking the world of fashion into a different dimension. The latest collection in the Komole range is an assemblage of designs for bridal wears, evoked by bits of royalty and royal weddings through the ages. Through many years of research and development, the House of Deola has gained stand in the Komole range. The result gave a new life to the aso-oke and the look of the modern bride. The original collection was launched in 2012. Speaking on the inspiration behind the collection, Deola Ade Ojo,

the name behind the brand said,” There is no need any more to have aso-oke and a lace outfit as two answers to an occasion’s fashion demands. We have combined both into one, and by so doing, transcended, making the new creation even better. The new fabric motifs and the fashions we have formed them into elevate the wearer to a princess level while still keeping her culturally grounded. I believe that this is what true class and elegance is about - shining in the form of a glow rather than a tinselly shine.” The House of Deola is promising a second series of KomoleKandids to be launched this season.

Prawns GARLICKY

“Sh ll are ffor b “Shallots babies; bi O Onions i are ffor men; G Garlic li iis ffor h heroes. – U Unknown. k The word “prawns” alone brings a higher level of class to this dish. This is one for the fish lovers who can tolerate the over-powering after taste of garlic. Garlic is for heroes – oh yeah! This is one harmonious dish for those who like to step up to a challenge in style. “Challenge” and “Style” – Need I say more?

INGREDIENTS PRAWNS: First of all let’s take this moment to say a little prayer for all the prawns that have gone to fish heaven. This beauty is a major ingredient used in different cultures. The Chinese could be said to over-indulge in consumption of prawns as this is a very common ingredient in their delicacies. In Nigeria, prawns are often substituted for periwinkle in some Nigerian dishes. The selenium found in prawns help to prevent the growth of cancers in the body. If you didn’t know, prawns fall in to the fish/seafood category (we just blew your mind)! This makes it a rich source of protein and omega 3 fatty acids. Did you know prawns are a rich source of calcium (next time you want to have a glass of milk, have a bowl of prawns instead) making it beneficial for strong teeth and bones. At Wakkis, this is one of many dainty platters which have prawns included in them.

SOYA SAUCE: This is made from a fermented paste of boiled soybeans, roasted grain, brine, and Aspergillus sojae molds. After fermentation, the paste is pressed, producing a liquid, which is the soy sauce, and a solid by-product, which is often used as animal feed. Due to the sodium content in this, some countries use this as a healthier alternative to processed salt. Be warned that over – consumption as with any other can cause problems. People with complains of high blood pressure should avoid soy sauce, for its high content of sodium. Moderation is key – Except ice-cream! Hint - use this to sauté your vegetables to give it a bit of flavour. WHITE PEPPER POWDER: White pepper is the ripe fruit of pepper wine which is dark red in colour when on the wine. It is soaked in water for nearly 15 days, after which it sheds its skin leaving the white seed inside the pepper fruit. This is dried and used as white pepper

whole or powder. This can be used as a home remedy for tooth aches in conjunction with clove oil or table salt. Because of its carminative properties it boosts the secretion of hydrochloric acid and assists in carrying out digestion more effectively. We could tell you how good it tastes or show you. The beauty of this dish is not only visual; it goes further to tickle your taste buds. Having this with some pilau rice and gravy keeps your lunch sorted for typical Monday Rush or Friday Ginger. No matter the day, we aim to deliver, “Ask and You Shall receive” – Matthew 7:7.
