EKAETTE UMOH // Educational background I had my first degree in Chemistry Education from the then University of Cross River State in 1992. When I was in school I thought Chemistry was the most interesting subject, followed by Geography. This made me to read Chemistry Education in the university, although many people would have preferred I read Medicine. When I was in secondary school I used to read the National Geographic magazine. I was fascinated by the magazine. I thought it would be fun to be a science teacher; hence I wanted to be a science teacher. I am also a chartered accountant. Career Shortly after school, I got married. My husband was in the banking sector and we had so many books on banking, business and economics. I started looking at his books and listened to him talk about the sector, and I got interested. So I got into banking, had my National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme in a branch of the Union Bank, Victoria Island, Lagos. After my NYSC I went to work in the then Meridian Equity Bank, Lagos. Subsequently, one of my bosses told me that if I wanted to be relevant in the industry I should attend the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) or the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), which is the body for professional accountants in Nigeria. Because I was very far from what banking was about, I went for ICAN. I started working in 1993. Shortly after then, my husband was transferred to Abuja. I moved with him and stayed a while before getting a job in the then Oceanic Bank. When I left the Oceanic Bank I was at home for a while. During that time I tried my hands on so many businesses. I made and sold soya milk, moringa products, coconut oil and body care products. And the microfinance bank offer came up. I was appointed to manage this

WE WERE SO NOISY IN MY HOUSE THAT PEOPLE WONDERED HOW MY MUM COPED WITH US. WE WERE NOT THE RICHEST OF PEOPLE, BUT MY HOUSE WAS FUN microfinance bank in 2009. Challenges I don’t know anybody who doesn’t have challenges; everyone’s life is peculiar. When you know my challenges you may not want to have my life. Having children in the middle of work was very challenging. There were times I had to go home during breaks to breastfeed my child. I was doing my ICAN and working. That meant that after work I won’t go straight home because I attended lectures. I also had the challenge of trying to meet target and attend to other

responsibilities. Lessons of life Life has taught me so many lessons, but I think that silence is one of the things we have underestimated. I have found out that if you are quiet, the answers to all the problems you have been fretting about come to you. Sometimes we talk too much and put ourselves in trouble. There are so many times we could have avoided trouble if we had not said anything. I think silence has been overlooked so much that we even forget that the wind has a sound but we don’t hear it because we are not silent. I have also learnt that one should look after oneself because after achieving so much and you are not healthy enough to enjoy the money, then what was all the hustling for? You need to be healthy and strong. That is why I am a strong advocate of physical activities. I get involved in all kinds of physical activities. I remember that when my kids were still in school, we would go out hiking in some places in Abuja. Life has also taught me that we shouldn’t bend too far backwards for our children because they also als have to grow up. Aspiration as a a child I wanted to be a newscaster because they were really fantastic. They looked prim and fanta spoke very good English, so I thought it would be nice to be one on of them. But you know, when you are very good goo in the sciences you can’t go anywhere near the t arts. But I don’t think it is late to be on the television. tele The teaching thing is still in me. I facilitate classes, I teach financial management to young entrepreneurs and people starting up entrepren businesses. I also consult in that area. I speak to people on certain certa areas of life, and I share these things through diff d erent forums. Teaching is something I really real love to do. Managing the th home and profession One of my blessings is the man I married. He ble supports me in everything I do. Those periods I e experimented on o different things, he supported me. My husband’s husband support enabled me to do all I wanted to t do. I also got help from my mother, cousins and other siblings. I have a very supportive family. fami Childhood memories m It was much fun. f I am the first of seven children. We were we so noisy in my house that people wondered wonder how my mum coped with us. We were not no the richest of people, but my house was fun; fu it was interesting. We were comfortable comfortab and went to good schools. Then, pub public schools were very good, so one didn’t lose anything by going to d a public school. My parents’ relatives visited often. We also visited the village a lot. My dad made us go to the farm in the village during holidays. And An we would go to the farm. I also a remember storytelling in the t village. It was so much fun. That is why I like good stories T till date. It was interesting to play outside with other children. These days, children watch a lot of television. I loved the way we w all played outside. I grew up with many other children and we played diff d erent games. When we went

I also remember going to far places with my cousins on foot. How I met my husband I met my husband when I was in school. One of his cousins had spoken to me about him. When he came home from Lagos, his cousin asked me to join them for a lunch in an expensive restaurant. I refused because I didn’t know the person with her and I wanted to go out with my friends. Subsequently, he came to my hostel and invited me out to dinner. That was how a relationship started and led to marriage eventually. woman; I love her carriage. Mum’s advice that stuck It has to do with food. My mum would tell you not to be greedy because when you eat it would soon digest and you start looking for another one. As a result of this training, gluttony is not in my family. My mum warned us against it and it has stuck with me. Advice for women I tell single ladies to marry the right person because that would make life easier. God is also very important because the decision to get married is very spiritual. Again, as a woman you need to have a vision for your life. What is your purpose in life? Find out what it is and work towards it. Before you go to sleep each time, ask yourself if you have achieved the purpose for which God created you. When you do this, you won’t be distracted. Advice to a younger you At 17, I would have told myself not to bother about perming my hair. After secondary school I wanted to perm my hair, but my mum advised that I w aited till I was 18. However, I convinced her because it was a big deal.

I LOVE TO GO HIKING. ABUJA HAS A BEAUTIFUL SCENERY FOR HIKING. THERE ARE SO MANY PLACES TO VISIT FOR HIKING.

Recurrent toothache in pregnancy I am seven months pregnant; and this is the second time I will be having severe toothache. It is usually very painful. I eat with difficulty. I was given drugs the first time and it stopped. Please what do I do? Will it affect my baby? Rose, Kontongora Toothache is not uncommon in pregnancy. Its cause includes hormonal changes with increased blood flow activities and subsequent congestion. Also, gingivitis, that is infection of the gum, can occur during pregnancy. Sometimes a pre-existing dental disease is aggravated in pregnancy.

Take basics steps like gatling with warm water, using softer tooth brush, avoiding food that aggravates the pains, and the use of analgesics or pain killers. Most importantly, your family physician or obstetrician should refer you to the dentist for proper assessment and management.

TRYING TO GET PREGNANT SINCE LAST MISCARRIAGE I took a six-month family planning injection. After that, I got pregnant after two months. I had a miscarriage in September 2015, since then I have been trying to get pregnant, but nothing has happened. Is there anything wrong with me? This is my first time of doing family planning. Tayo, Lagos

Let me first debunk something I got from the last part of your question. Since you got pregnant within two months of stopping family planning, it has not affected your fertility at all. Actually, family planning hardly affects fertility. You had miscarriage in September; let’s say one month for menses to return, it means you have only attempted for four months. Medically, it is too early to worry. Remember, medically, we advise couples to try unprotected, regular intercourse for one year before thinking of investigations. The exceptions to this include advance of more than 35 and pre-existing fertility problem. I will suggest you relax, have regular intercourse with your spouse, and most likely, you will conceive soon.

Alhassa, Kano How old is your baby? Was it from birth or after? Was there any history of injury or infection? Could it be congenital or acquired? The information available are scanty. The medical development in orthopaedics is far gone. This may need only a corrective surgery. Kindly take the child to see a consultant orthopaedic surgeon for assessment and management. Since you are in Kano, options available are the Orthopaedic Hospital, Dalla, the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano, or any other orthopaedic hospital. Let me also advise that the earlier, the better.

Medication to increase testosterone level What medication can I take to increase my testosterone level? Can a wound in the genital area make it weak? And what is the solution? Gabriel, Kano From the above, you are most likely suffering from erectile dysfunction, popularly known as ED. This is not an unusual complaint from men, especially as they grow older. Have you gone for investigations? There are several causes of weak erection. Since you have a wound in your genital area, this must be addressed. You have to be treated, together with your spouse since it may be sexually transmissible. You also need full assessment by a urologist for proper counselling and treatment. Also, avoid self medication because quite a number of drugs should be taken with caution. Proper assessment of other systems like the cardiovascular system is critical to avoid catastrophic side effects.

Please, kindly include your full name and where you are writing from when sending your questions. Thank you.

The Mbari cultural centre is an open air museum that houses superb arts monuments that you will surely love. It is found in Ikenegbu layout, Owerri and at EkeNguru in Aboh Mbaise. It is an open museum that houses monumental arts that depict peace, prosperity and social life in Igbo land. This centre is equipped with beautiful scriptures that represent their deities. It boasts of various artifacts that depict the cultural heritage of the people. The amphi-theater is another gigantic work of art in the state. This theater is a promotion of the national objectives on culture, as well as modern efforts to preserve the heritage of the people. In this centre, a number of symbolic models were sculptured or painted. And they reflect the aesthetics of the Igbo nation. In the Mbari tradition, the act of creation is more important than the finished object. The function of the building is to honour the goddess of creation and ensure the productivity of the earth and the survival

of the community. The very short lifespan of Mbari houses allows every age group in the village to participate in this eternal cycle. The Mbari house is not a shrine; rather, it is a pointer to the rich history and culture of the people as it houses their cultural heritage. This centre is mostly patronised by academics.

BODY HAIR SKIN

B E AU T Y Skin care rules to remember in dry season by PRISCA EMADU

Our beauty routine is always evolving. However, there are certain beauty tips we have picked up, which we plan to use for several years. These tricks have helped us look put-together in the face of many stressful beauty situations; and we are forever indebted to them. Here are some beauty tips every woman, no matter your age, status or beauty style, should know.

1.

Clear skin diet:

What you eat ultimately reflects on your face. Your diet provides nutrients to your body to repair the damaged tissues, mend collagen, build new cells and bones, produce enzymes and proteins, etc. Go for diets that contain fruits and vegetables, fiber, lean protein, and complex carbohydrates, which are less in saturated fat. Consume berries, best food for clear skin since they contain antioxidants that work as anti-aging.

2. Keep your skin hydrated: One of the key functions of the skin is to detox your body; hence keeping your skin hydrated is a natural tip on “how to clear it naturally. If your body contains a lot of junk, your skin will neither be clear nor glow. To flush out the toxins and waste, drink a lot of water.

3. Exercising and washing your face:

keeping your weight under control, it also stimulates blood circulation throughout your body, including the face. Sweating during exercise results to opening up of the pores of your body, including the face. After exercising, take a shower and wash your face to get rid of sweat and toxins. This will help in getting a clear skin.

4. Remove makeup before going to bed: Your skin also needs breathing. If you sleep with makeup on your face, your pores remain clogged throughout the night, and with clogged pores, you cannot have a clear skin.

12: 23(1

5. Sleep smart: It is not only that you require adequate sleep to get a clear skin and fix the damaged tissues, you also need to sleep properly to minimise the risk of getting dirt and oil onto your face. This is the main cause of acne outbreak.

Toxins and excessive secretion of oil by skin glands are the prime causes of skin problems. Exercising regularly does not only help in
