A personality with a purpose Educational background I attended Adrawo International School, Lagos for my nursery education and proceeded to Kiddy Joy Primary School, Jos, Plateau State. From there Imoved to Federal Government College, Jos, after which I got admission into the University of Jos for a diploma in Law. I later got a direct entry admission to read Law in the University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt. Career When I graduated from the university I started with my facility management company, where I offered services to individuals, top government and media parastatals and banks. I did that for about five years and made up my mind to go after my dream and aspiration, which is to be a media personality (television production, presenting, directing, etc). Growing up Growing up was fun. I have wonderful and fond memories of my childhood. I grew up in Jos, Plateau State and PortHarcourt, Rivers State. My parents are late. May God bless their souls. They gave us the best. My passion for the television and how I overcame the challenges I faced My passion for television started when I was 9 years old. The first time I saw Femi Oke on the CNN reporting the weather, my late dad said to me, ‘That’s Femi Oke, she is a Nigerian woman like you.’ I fell in love with her and told my dad that I was going to be like her when I grew up. After that day, every time Femi Oke came on air, my dad would call my attention. That was how the passion started. When it was time for me to pick a course in the university, my parents didn’t let me read Mass

I was shocked when my dad said I was never going be on television; so I read Law. And for years I just focused on being a good business woman. As we all know, northern parents are very hard to convince when it has to do with the media. I lost my parents when I was 18.My dad

Funmi Iyanda, Mo Abudu, Christine Amanpour. These are women in the media I looked up to. I started in 2011 and did two pilots of the Salma Show but was turned down by the DSTV. I went back in 2012 and was rejected again. I was down and disappointed for a short while, but I still did another pilot for them. This time I shot six episodes. This was in 2014. And you know what? I was still rejected, so I decided to take a break and go back to my facility management company. Eventually, my husband was able to convince me to try for the last time. He suggested that I go to the BBC Academy and study media/broadcast, after which I would come back and give it a shot. That was exactly what I did. And guess what? I came back and shot 13 episodes. I was confident that they wouldn’t say no. And the rest is history. They loved it. Lessons of life I learnt to believe in myself. If you do not believe in yourself, no one will. I also learnt not to trust people in this industry easily; it’s all smoke and mirrors. It should be more action and less talk. Aspirations I wanted to have my own talk show as a media personality, and I think I have achieved that. SALLAH SPECIAL

Tasty treats for the family SALLAH FRUIT CAKE

by AMINA ALHASSAN

CHINESE Rice with grilled chicken liver INGREDIENTS Four cups of long grain rice(soaked for 15 to 20 minutes), 3 tablespoons of oil, 2 tablespoons of chopped spring onions, 1 tablespoon each of ginger/ garlic paste, 1cubed capsicum(or you can chop a little from each colour), 2grated carrots, 2 tablespoons of sweet corn,

salt to taste, soya sauce and 5 cups of hot water.

INSTRUCTION Heat the oil in a deep pan. Add onions, followed by ginger garlic, then the carrots. Stir-fry for a while, then add the capsicum and the sweet corn. Add the drained rice and stir-fry for a couple of minutes, then

add the hot water and salt. Let it cook on medium heat until rice is almost cooked and not much water left. Splash some soya sauce, cover and put in oven for about 10 minutes. Serve with soup or sauce of your choice This rice dish also complements greatly with pepper steak.

Grilled CHICKEN LIVER Ingredients

5

00 grams of chicken liver (cleaned and kept on a sieve to drain any excess water), ½ tablespoon of salt, 1 tablespoon of black pepper powder, ½ tablespoon of garlic paste, 1/2 tablespoon of ginger paste, ½ tablespoon of red chilli powder, 1 tablespoon of ground cumin powder, juice of half a lemon.

IINSTRUCTION Marinate chicken livers for 2 hours with all the ingredients. Skewer the chicken liver and grill or fry on all sides on a thick grill-pan with fr a couple of tablespoons of oil until done and aromatic. an Once done, light a coal and place it in i the middle of all the skewers, then drop some oil on it and cover the dish d ffor a minute so that the smoke released can be enveloped in the grilled liver. Uncover and discard the coal. Squeeze a bit of lemon juice over the grilled liver, sprinkle a dash of black pepper powder and serve with sliced onions and tomatoes.

The beautiful and colourful light fruit cake is perfect for any occasion. INGREDIENTS One and half cups of plain/all-purpose flour(180gm), 1/2 cup of powdered almonds, 170gm of butter or margarine (or a combination of the two, softenedapprox 3/4 cup), 1/2 cup of sugar(grinded to a powder), 4eggs at room temperature, 1 cup of dried fruits and candied peel(if you are not using candied peel, add the zest of 1 lemon), 1/2 cup of chopped cherries (it could be a combination of red and green), 2 tablespoons of vanilla essence, 1 and 1/2 tablespoons of baking powder, 1/4 cup of milk, 1/4 tablespoon of salt, almond flakes for decorating the top. INSTRUCTION Make sure all the ingredients are at room temperature before you begin. Preheat oven at 170c. Grease the line of the loaf pan, then dust it with flour. Recommended size is a 9x5x3 inch pan. Remove 1 tablespoon from the flour and sprinkle it over the dried fruits and mix. This will help ensure that they do not sink to the bottom of the pan during baking. Set aside. Add the vanilla essence in the milk. Set aside. Sieve/sift the rest of the flour with the baking powder and salt. Then add the powdered almonds and stir well. Set aside. Beat the butter/ margarine with the powdered sugar in a big bowl until light and fluffy. Be sure to beat them well because this cake requires very little baking powder. This stage is crucial in ensuring you have a light and fluffy cake. Once the butter and sugar are light and creamy, add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition and scraping down the sides of the bowl occasionally. Add the flour and milk/vanilla in three instalments, combining gently between each addition, starting with the flour, then the milk and ending with the flour again. Make sure not to over-mix the batter at this stage. Finally, add the dried fruits and chopped cherries and gently stir with a spatula. Pour this batter into your prepared loaf pan. Sprinkle the almond flakes over the cake and bake in the preheated oven at 170c for about 45 minutes to an hour, or until skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean. During baking, if you find that the top is colouring too quickly, you can cover the cake lightly with a piece of foil midway through baking. Place the loaf pan on a wire to cool slightly, then turn the cake out of the pan and allow it to cool completely before slicing. The loaf will keep well in an airtight container for up to 3 days, and longer if refrigerated.

CHANGED DIAGNOSIS FOURTEEN YEARS NO CHILD AFTER OPERATION I have been married for 14yrs now without a child. Lately, I have been experiencing scanty menstrual flow. I’m 40 years old. I am worried about this because I still look forward to getting pregnant. Efe Abuja At the age of forty and having tried to be pregnant for fourteen years of marriage I would advise you to go for assisted reproductive therapy most likely invitro fertilization – IVF. In case of financial challenge then you may think of complete infertility work up for you and your spouse under the supervision of a gynaecologist Depending on what the investigations says, the other options available include: stimulation like ovulation induction with timed intercourse; and intrauterine insemination - IUI. In case of serious male factor like azoospermia that is complete absence of sperm during seminalysis then IUI with donor sperm is an option. Do not forget at this stage the best is IVF as soon as possible, this is important because after certain age the IVF may have to be done with donor eggs.

I was operated for fibroid on the 1st of June and I collected the result of the histology from the lab and it was adenomyosis. I am confused can I still concieve? Aisha Kano First and foremost, relax your mind and recover fully from the operation. Of course you can conceive. In some cases of adenomyosis there is reduced chance of conception but not that they cannot conceive. You have to discuss with your doctor to know whether the adenomyosis is localised or not and the extent. Advise will depend on his findings during the operation.

NO MENSES FOR ONE YEAR Please my menses ceased for a year now what do I do? Zainab Bauchi How old are you? This is critical to determine the possible diagnosis. If you are around fifty years of age then this is most likely menopause since menstruation have ceased for a year. For those around forty or below the possible diagnosis include secondary amenorrhea or premature ovarian failure. The latter occurred when women enter menopause at an earlier age. Among the test done will be pregnancy test which will be negative and if hormonal assay is done the FSH especially will be very high for the age usually in the menopausal range. In case of secondary amenorrhea cause include hormonal imbalance, PCOS, among others. Doing what we called progesterone challenge test will be one of the early steps in the management. I will advise you see a gynaecologist for proper assessment.

PREGNANCY TEST POSITIVE AND NO ABDONMINAL PROTUSION I am married woman with two kids. My problem is concerning my third pregnancy. I was tested positive for pregnancy and I have stopped menstruating for Once a woman did not menstruate for six months a diagnosis of secondary amenorrhea can be made. You have to repeat the pregnancy test if it is positive and the stomach is not protruding yet the possibility of wrong date could be entertained. Pelvic scan will help to confirm pregnancy and the date. In case there is

six months now, but my abdomen is yet to protrude. Please help me what is the problem? Mutiyat, Oyo State

no intrauterine pregnancy then other possibility could be ectopic pregnancy but at this stage it would have ruptured except it is intraabdominal pregnancy but then abdominopelvic ultrasound will diagnose this and it is usually associated abdominal pains. Another possibility is Gestational Trophoblastic Disease

especially choriocarcinoma in which case the abdominal swelling may not be there. Doing a quantitative serum beta chorionic gonadotrophin is diagnostic. We should not forget the pregnancy test could be false positive so repeating it is very important. I will suggest you see a gynaecologist for proper assessment.
