ne of the treats you can give yourself from time to time is a detox bath. A detox bath is one of the easiest healing therapies we can do to facilitate our body’s natural detoxification. It’s a way to cleanse the body, relax the mind and provide extra support to various systems of the body. And the truth is that you don’t have to always go to the spa to do this. You can turn a bath into a sensory sensation, just by adding some essential oils to it. The great part is that you can be very strategic with this and include oils based on what your problem is. Let’s say you had a long day and you feel totally fagged out, there is an essential oil for that, and you would want to choose peppermint oil for that bath. They have ha it all

mapped out for you and have you covered, whether you are feeling stressed, worn out, or if you are having a headache. There are detoxifying oils you can get from the supermarket. Similarly, do you want to keep tabs of your heartbeat rate, how long you have walked, and even how many calories you burn per day, then get a wearable technology. Wearable technologies are the biggest new innovation in technology since the smart phones. Their possibilities are endless. The technologies are laden with smart sensors, and make use of a web connection, usually using the Bluetooth to connect wirelessly to your smartphone. They use these sensors to connect to you as a person, and they help you to achieve goals such as staying fit, active, losing weight or being more organised by giving you the information you need.
Most wearables are wristworn, but some can be clipped to the body and hung around the neck. And guess what, wearable technologies are quickly blending with jewellery and are worn in the same way. Watches, rings, pendants – you name it, there’s a wearable that does it. The newest bands are adding continuous heart rate monitoring, for even more accurate data on how much of your calories you burn and how much you exercise. Though a little expensive, you can get one to help track vital information about your body that can forestall a breakdown. Our cover personality is the president of the National Council of Women Societies. Find out how she hopes to achieve gender equity for women. Enjoyy our package!

interview by MALIKATU MUKAILA Mrs. Gloria Laraba Shoda is the current National President of the National Council for Women Societies (NCWS). An indigene of Kaduna state and Anambra state, she holds a degree in Adult Education Community Development from the University of Benin Edo state and also a masters degree in Community Development from the University of Ibadan. She is married and blessed with 3 children. In this interview with Tambari magazine, she tells her story and how she is pushing for gender equity. Educational background I attended the St. Peters Demonstration School, Kawo, Kaduna State. It was an Anglican school. After that, I proceeded to St. Faith College, now Government Girls’ Secondary School, Kawo. I left in Form Four and got married. I later went back to school to complete my O’ levels at the United Missionary College, Ibadan. I did my teachers training in 1975. Thereafter, I went to the Ogun State College of Education in 1978, where I obtained my National Certificate in Education (NCE) and continued having children. I went to the University of Benin for my first degree in Adult Education and Community Development. After some years, I decided to go to the University of Ibadan for my master’s degree in Community Development. That was in 2002. I also did an online PhD in Peace and Conflict Resolution at the Seminary College, Ibadan, after which I attended a Senior Executive Course at the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) Kuru, Jos in 2014. Growing up Growing up was very interesting. I grew up in Kaduna under the watch of my step-father because of what we call inter-marriage. My parents got separated while I was still a child and my mother had to marry another man who trained me. He was very nice to me. I didn’t even know he wasn’t my father until I grew up because I was still a baby when my father left. In those days, I remember we used to walk to school on Bata shoes. It was quite a distance. We would take the shortcuts. It was interesting. Our uniforms were nice. And we happened to be in the middle class family. Also, in school I was lucky to be on the bright side. Usually, on the day of vacation, when results would be announced, the boys would be ready to beat you up if you beat them in class. So we were always ready in case we took the first position. To avoid trouble, we would run away as soon as we collected our results. Another interesting thing is that we were given food in school. It was a missionary school, so we had white teachers. We called them Peace Corps because they would teach as volunteers. They used to give us oat with milk everyday; and you know how children would like that. Those moments were interesting. Career Before my National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme in Maiduguri, I worked as a clerical officer in the Ministry of Health, after which I went back to school and taught at the Command Children School, Ikeja Cantonment. I also taught in Kaduna when I did my youth service at the Government Day Secondary School, Jaji. Afterwards, I taught in Kawo Government Day Secondary School. I was very happy to teach there because that was the community I grew up in and everybody there knew me. When my husband felt that the children were not speaking his language, we decided to go back to the South-West; so I was transferred to Shagamu. There, I taught at the Ikenne
Gloria Laraba Shoda: Making case for gender equity
Community High School and was later transferred to Remo Secondary School, which is my husband’s alma-mater. I was very happy to be a teacher in my husband’s former school. In 1991, my daughter developed a kidney problem and I took her to the United Kingdom for surgery. She had a kidney transplant, so I donated one of my kidneys to her, which kept her for 17 years before she passed away. I am very happy she lived for that long and had a child. When I returned to Nigeria, I resigned and started my own business. I opened a boutique and my own school called Great Scholars International School. It is about 23 years old now. It consists of nursery, primary and secondary sessions. I have also held many appointments. When I went into business I joined the Chamber of Commerce and became the president of my City Chamber for two terms. I also became the president of the Ogun State Chamber of Commerce. I am still a member of the NACIMA. As the president of the Chamber of Commerce I was also given political appointments. I was made a member of the Governing Council of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic. I became the first female chairman of that Governing Council. I was also the chairman of their micro finance bank and other business outfits. Those were some of the appointments I held, apart from being the president of so many non-governmental organisations, including the popular National Grassroots Association of Mama
Jumai Aduda. Role models Stories about people like Olufunmilayo Ransome Kuti, the Tinubus, Margret Thatcher and Mahatma Gandhi inspire me a lot. They did what they had to do without thinking of the consequences; so they are my role models.
WOMEN ARE BUILDERS OF THE NATION. WITHOUT THE WOMAN, THERE CAN NEVER BE A NATION. THE MAN CAN’T BE COMPLETE WITHOUT THE WOMAN
Combining the home front and career I have held so many public positions, so I am used to people. Also, my husband once contested for governorship of his state, so I know how to handle that aspect as well. I got married at a very young age and my children are all grown up. I don’t really have young kids that I would look after, except my grandchildren; the only baby I have is my husband. Definition of style I like cloths a lot. I love to wear fashionable cloths, but well covered. If I see beautiful cloths I would buy and sew, even if I would take them to the church and give to people.
Three fashion accessories I always have on me I might forget my wristwatch, but I must have my jewellery, shoes and bags on. Advice from my mother When I was getting married, my mum told me that my husband was my first child; hence I should take care of him like his mother. She said I should

GLORIA LARABA SHODA // always feed him, no matter the kind of problem I had with him. That advice has been with me till date. And I keep telling my children the same thing. Maybe that is the reason I have spent 40 years in my husband’s house. Mode of relaxation I love to watch movies. I also love music. I love the likes of Ebenezer Obey and sometimes, Sunny Ade. Generally, I like different kinds of music. Beauty routine I don’t think I have any; I don’t visit the spa. I just use what sooths my skin and that’s all. I know that I always have the shea butter and coconut oil, which I use in the evenings. Keeping fit Honestly, I don’t do routine exercise. Although I have all the equipment at home, I hardly use them. But I am thinking about that now. However, I walk around a lot.
when he married me but he couldn’t afford it. Joy of motherhood The joy of being a mother her surpasses all because it is like you are looking at yourself ourself being recreated. I had my kids when I was still ill much younger. I grew up with them, hem, so my first daughter was like a friend to me although she later passed away. The second daughter was 15 months older than her brother. er. We are like friends. We discuss a lot. To me, the joy being a mother is indescribable. ibable. When I had my first rst child, I would say ay I didn’t even know w what I was doing. g. I had a premature e birth. Wheneverr she started crying ying at night and nd I couldn’t stop top her, I would uld just jus ustt start crying. ng. So, all of us would start rt crying. My y husband was also young, so we would pass the baby to each other. er. That experience was very strange but nice. At a point, my mother had to come down to assist and I was so relieved.
WE ALSO WANT TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE OF GENDER EQUITY. A LOT OF TIMES, MEN DON’T WANT THAT ISSUE TO BE ADDRESSED
Favourite holiday spots Wherever I go, I still visit London because I love the city. Maybe because my children grew up there and went to school there. I visit London a lot, so it became like home to me. Favourite fashion designer I don’t have any. If I see something on you and I like it, I will approach you so you link me up with the tailor that made it. I am not regimental. What I would tell a younger me I would tell a younger me to still be me because I decided that this is what I was going to be. When I am determined to do something, I just do it. I am very happy that my husband supports me all the way because we talk all the time and he encourages me. Best day of the week I love Wednesday because that’s the day I was born Favourite dish I love eba and bitter leaf soup. Legacies I want to be known for that village girl that grew up from a middle class family and made her mark in the society. I want to be known as that woman who wanted to achieve and did achieve. I was nobody but grew up to become somebody. Caring for others My mother was a business woman and sometimes it took her away from home. I grew up seeing so many people in our house because my mother was a kind of community leader. Having attended school to Standard Four, she could read and write. That made her very popular. We had to cook all the time. My elder sister was much older than me, so I was the one doing most of the house chores. Apart from that, it was just a happy time for me. How I met my husband I met him in Mubi, Adamawa State, where I went to visit my cousin, who was a soldier. In those days, the army used to inspect their houses to make sure they were neat. I think he saw my picture when he came to my cousin’s house and told him that he wanted to see me whenever I visited. So when I visited, I was supposed to go and see his boss, who also happened to be a family friend. He was not around and they asked me to wait. It was actually the plan for us to meet. That was how we met and later got married. We were blessed with four children, but one passed away. Most cherished gift from him There are so many special gifts from him. There was a time he wanted to buy me a car and I told him I wanted a particular one. But he said he would rather buy me a BMW because that was the car I wanted

Where women should be e placed in the society Women are builders of the nation. Without the woman there can never be a nation. The man can’t be complete without the woman; that’s why God didn’t create them at the same time. I think a woman’s place should be put on the e topmost priority. Women are ar e very strong creatures, both h physically and in mind. We can be emotional, onal, but we are stronger because a woman n can do so many things at the same time. My goals as the new NCWS WS president Well, in the first place, we have to restructure the NCWS. We are going to make sure that women are e well taken care of. Women’s education, health, alth, and even positions, should be put on n the priority list. We also want to address the issue of gender equity. A lot of times, es, men don’t want that issue to be addressed. essed. We are not saying that we want to become heads of the family; we are just saying aying that there should be equity. Just as we e are taught the same subjects in the classrooms; rooms; it should be like that when it comes to governance, positions, political appointments tments and elective positions. The women men should be given a chance. It shouldn’t ’t be men with big pockets. Because women men don’t have big pockets, that is why we are e asking g for for 35 35 per cent action plan to be passed into law. Under normal circumstances, ces, we are not supposed to ask for it, we are supposed to be equal in every aspect. t. But now in Nigeria, politics is all about ut money, and we know that women don’tt have that kind of money. It doesn’t mean that women are not qualified to become me governors, presidents or anything they ey want to be, but it is very expensive to run the elections. That is the reason we are asking for the percentage to be put aside e for women so that the best can contest and win.

Treat yourself to a Detox bath
H
aving a detox bath at home can be as relaxing and beautifying as a day spent somewhere expensive. Pick a day when you won’t have any interruptions, turn off your cell and light some candles to set the scene. Then take a long, hot bath, give yourself a facial, body and feet treatments.
Take a hot bath. Fill your bath tub with water at just the right temperature, whether you like it piping hot or just this side of warm. While the tub is filling, dim the lights and light some candles. Beyond that, you can help yourself relax further by doing a few of your favourite things. Add bath salts, essential oils and other ingredients to the water. This is a great way to enhance your bath and give you the benefits of aromatherapy as well. You don’t have to limit yourself to bath salts. Feel free to add bubble bath, bath oils, bath beads, bath bombs, and anything else that helps you relax. Try a skin mask. At a spa you might be offered a choice between a seaweed mask and a mud mask. The former isn’t easy to do at home, but you can easily make yourself a mask using

Use a body scrub to completely exfoliate your arms, legs and torso. Your skin will feel soft, smooth and healthy when you get out of the tub. Dry your skin and apply a nourishing lotion. Use a towel to pat your skin dry, and then seal in the moisture by applying a lotion or body cream to your arms, legs and torso. After your body is covered in lotion, put on your bathrobe to give it time to absorb into your skin before you get dressed. Trim and file your nails. Use fingernail clippers or scissors to shape each of your nails into crescent shapes, rounding off the edges. Use a nail file to smooth rough spots and even out the shapes so that all of your nails look professionally trimmed.

Pains in the throat What is wrong if someone is feeling a pain in the throat? Aisha
It could be an upper respiratory tract infection or tonsillitis. The throat should be examined for enlarged tonsils. Antibiotics will be necessary, especially if it is the latter. Gaggling with warm water with little salt might be beneficial. In some cases of enlarged tonsils, tonsillectomy might be necessary. It is better to see an ENT surgeon for advice.

CAN I REGAIN MY STRENGTH? I practised masturbation for 10 years, but I decided to stop it. Please, can I regain the strength I have lost throughout that very time? No problem. You can. Actually loss of strength is not medically proven in this circumstance.
RHYTHMIC OR CALENDAR METHOD OF FAMILY PLANNING I am a student who is about to marry. I will like to monitor my menstrual cycle as a means of family planning. How do I go about it? I don’t want to use drug or injection because I heard from women that it affects young girls who never gave birth before.
FIBROID IN PREGNANCY I have fibroid and I am pregnant. Can I still deliver by myself? Bola, Abuja Yes. Most women with fibroid in pregnancy still deliver normally. The one with major challenge is if the fibroid is located in the lower uterine segment or is below the presenting part, in which case it will be difficult for the presenting part to descend into the pelvis for engagement to occur. Another problem that may be associated with fibroid in pregnancy is abnormal lie, in which case the big fibroid prevent normal turning of the baby. These abnormal lie include transverse and oblique. In these situations delivery is usually by caesarean section. Anybody with moderate and big fibroid in pregnancy should deliver under the supervision of an TAMBARI SUNDAY, S E P T E M B E R 18, 2016
obstetrician. One major problem associated with delivery in such condition is postpartum haemorrhage (bleeding after delivery), which results from poor uterine contractions. This could occur, whether delivery is by spontaneous vaginal delivery or by caesarean section. Proper and adequate steps have to be taken to prevent this. One must mention the fact that when it is necessary to go for caesarean section in a woman with fibroid in pregnancy, it is possible to plan to remove the fibroid at the same time. This is described as caesarean myomectomy and must be done by experts, only on well selected cases.
The one you want to practise is natural method of family planning called rhythmic or calendar method. It is not too reliable and is better for those who have constant menstrual cycle length. For example, a woman with a 28-day menstrual cycle length can divide the menstrual cycle in three equal parts of nine days each. The first third will be menstrual flow time and the dry part, which is safe. The second third, 10th to 18th day, would be the fertile period and intercourse to be avoided, while the last third is safe too. One important thing to note is that ovulation occurs 14 days to the next menses. In a woman with a 30-day cycle length, the same arbitrary three-part division could be done. Other forms of natural family planning include cervical mucus, the beads method and temperature method. Let me also debunk the belief that drug or injections used by those who are yet to deliver affect their chances of conception later. It’s a fallacy. It is unfounded and not true. I have seen young women who use pills and injections as family planning methods and have no problem with conception when they decided to. Ironically, those who did not use any method and had unwanted pregnancies has greater tendency for fertility problem due to complications of abortions.

Organise your kitchen with food storage packs
by MULIKATU MUKAILA

ood storage in our home is very important as it helps us safeguard our items, keeping them away from the bacteria that could be harmful to the body. Food storage containers keep everything in your kitchen tidy, well organised and easier to locate. Apart from organising your kitchen, certain food storages add some beauty and unique scene in the kitchen as items are being kept appropriately. You can use see-through containers to let you tell at a glance, when you need to re-stock, or basket- like containers for perishable foods such as potatoes, onions, yam and all that. It is also very important to prepare food safely to help stop harmful bacteria from spreading and growing in your home. Fascinating paintings of Birnin Kudu rocks
by MULIKATU MUKAILA
B
irnin Kudu is an old, historic town located in the southern part of Jigawa State. It was renowned for its rocks and drawings, some of them dating back to 2000 years. There are caves containing Neolithic paintings of cattle, which greatly look like some found in central Sahara. The drawings are said to be amongst the oldest in Nigeria.
