How to a Gentleman Statement Earrings

‘My greatest joy is derived from a very strong family union’
Hello Readers,
F
ashion is an umbrella for many looks, but people’s choices and preferences make outstanding statements. People have their preferences when it comes to fashion and personal style which influences fashion scenes. Guess what we have back on trend? The multi-layer neckpiece mixed with stones and metals. When wearing jewellery, one is always conscious not to mix metals and stones, but this season brings a new style that is very cool. Mixing and matching these two is “in” and the rave of the moment. Long neck pieces made of metal and beads or stones are the perfect fit right now. There can’t be a more exciting mix than this lovely combination of jewellery. But if you intend to invest in this you must keep your outfit simple so that you don’t look too clustered with the baubles. Talk about jewellery, you can also find a pair of nice earrings to play a complimentary role. Earrings are not just a pair of addition to a great finish; they add instant glamour that brightens the face.

ashion these days requires more knowledge. Even the designer needs a good measure of creativity to come up with well designed regalia. Choosing one colour all through is not a bad idea as you don’t need to combine them. You can as well choose a colour that can go down well with your skin, making you look bold and superb. Also, designs have different perspectives as the fabric can be toned down with beads. There can also be a tangle of ruffle ball dress concept as it has the power of attraction.

ayo Keshi was born into the family of the late Claudius and Cecilia Jones in Lagos State. She started her early education at the St. Agnes Primary School, Maryland, Lagos and went to Our Lady of Apostles in Ibadan for her secondary education. She also attended the St. Theresa College, also in Ibadan, before she was admitted into the University of Ibadan where she read Linguistics. She graduated in 1976, after which she went for the compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme. Interestingly, even before she graduated, she was offered a job in the Federal Ministry of Education in Lagos. But she could not
take it as she left with her husband who was a Foreign Service officer. Years later, she joined the Culture Department of the Ministry of Arts and Culture and rose to become a director in the Department of Cultural Industries and Heritage, from where she retired 33 years later. In September 2014, she was appointed the Director-General, National Council for Arts and Culture. Mrs. Keshi, who is a proud mother of three and happily married to Ambassador Joe Keshi, spoke with Tambari on the contributions of cultural industries to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and other important issues

The best part of my childhood A number of things happened while I was growing up. When I was a child, we used to walk to school for several miles. And we found it interesting because we were in company of other students. In fact, my father was one of the few people that had a car, so each time he was taking us to school, the other children would laugh and even make mockery of us, saying we couldn’t even walk to school. It got to a point where my dad would have to drop us a few kilometres before our school so that we could join other children and walk to school. The interesting part of it was that we didn’t wear our shoes; we would remove it and walk barefeet to school because we wouldn’t want our shoes to get dirty. When we got to school we would rinse off the dirt from our feet, put on our shoes and go into the classroom. Also, we didn’t have a television set, so we didn’t see all the movies we now see. I am not saying it is better because information is power. But it forced us to do other things that really helped us. We were able to read. In fact, our leisure time was for reading. We were either playing outside with friends
or reading novels. So it made most of us avid readers, enabled us to speak good English and helped our thinking process too.
My dreams That’s interesting. As a child I didn’t have a dream like most people who would say they wanted to be doctors, lawyers and all that. I always felt I should do one thing at a time. I lost my mother at the age of 10, and I was the oldest among my siblings, so I had the responsibility to take care of the home. That is why I cook very well. I started cooking for everybody and taking care of the house at a very tender age. I have always been the leader of the house. My father would always say that the best

leadership is by example. So I will say my leadership position today is God’s destiny.
think I also transferred that aspect into my own relationship with my husband.
What I miss most about my mother
Motherhood experience
Like I said, I was about 10 years old when she passed on. I think I was the only one that really knew her. My mother was a very determined woman. I will even say that she was the backbone of the family. She would always say, “Once you are married, your priority becomes how to give and do the best for your husband and children. That is why I will need you as the eldest to always lead by example.” I also remember that she had a lot of love and respect for my father. I
With the first child, I didn’t have an idea of what to expect. All I knew was that I was pregnant and had plenty of pains. In those days, they would tell you not to scream or cry during childbirth. You were expected to just endure the pains. All the same, I enjoyed motherhood to the best because I didn’t get to work for about seven years. And I was able to build a bond with my children. I was even their lesson teacher after school, an action that made me supervise their works at

school. That bond has remained till today. I am their confidant; there’s nothing they cannot talk to me about. We are more or less like friends. Two are presently married. I have four grandchildren whose company I enjoy.
Balancing career with motherhood I was lucky enough to start well as I didn’t work for about seven years. I just engaged in motherhood duties. That helped me to lay a strong foundation. Presently, there is no problem with balancing because they are all grown up. Generally, you have to give everything equity. For me, family comes first.
Mode of relaxation Back then, Monday to Friday was busy for everyone in the house, but at weekends we would have something to do as a family. Actually, when we were much younger (my husband and I), we would go out every Saturday with friends and have our fun, but now, if we are both in town, we just go out to some place to relax. And if the whole family is in town, we use that opportunity to have breakfast every Sunday.
My greatest joy My greatest joy derives from a very strong family union. I have known my
husband for many years now, and my children are all doing well. The grandchildren, in particular, are the ones I find most interesting. This is because I marvel at God’s work when I watch my granddaughter exhibit some of my characteristics and my grandson behave like his uncle. I just say that God is wonderful. Blood is very strong. I just take delight in having a peaceful home.
How I support my husband I have spent most of my life supporting him. I didn’t work for some years. While he was working I was taking care of the home. My husband and I are more of friends, and I think that is what makes my marriage strong.
How I met him We both went to a Catholic school. I was at the girls’ section while he was at the boys’. We had activities together, but as time went on we started seeing that some were more of your friends than others. And we just found ourselves going to the same university. We picked up from there.
Most precious gift from him The children and the fact that he is a father are wonderful gifts. My husband is a friend, confidant and companion;
TAMBARI APRIL 5, 2015
name it all. He is also someone who loves to care for people.
Role models In the Catholic school we had reverend sisters. The only time my father took me to school was to hand me over to the sisters so they could take good care of me and help me in acquiring the skills a child would get from her mother. And they did that. They taught me many aspects of life: how to cook, how to bake, clean, do my homework, and even how to live a proper life. So I will say that Sisters Ailbe and Karmel are my role models. They were from Ireland. Aunty Kunle, who lived in Ibadan, was also my role model.
Definition of fashion style I love to wear things that will make me comfortable, as well as fit into an occasion. So I find it hard to wear an evening gown during the day even though people do it, or wear it to church. Also, for me it’s not about being overdressed but dressing in a tasteful manner.
Secret behind my youthful look Well, I really don’t know because I don’t
“The grandchildren, in particular, are the ones I find most interesting. Sometimes when I get home and I am very tired, I just wash off my make-up and off to bed. I think it could be genetic because until my father died he never had one wrinkle, and he was 74 years old. I think it’s inherited. It is also my lifestyle.
Legacy I want to be known as a woman who contributed to the culture sector at the time when there was little attention. I added my voice to say that Nigeria should pay attention to this sector, which can increase the country’s GDP and create employment.

ho would think our earrings could impact the way we look; or more importantly, how our faces look? The wrong earrings can make you look older, outdated or stunning. Which would you prefer? Earrings will bring attention to your face, which can be good or bad. To make sure the earrings you wear are flattering, here are a few points to consider. Your face shape matters when it comes to wearing the right earring. Colour: If you look best in cool colours, wear silver jewellery. If you look best in warm colours, wear gold jewellery. Keep fashionable earrings for party and relaxed events. Your earrings should also rhyme with the style of cloths you are wearing. Casual cloths go with small, plain earrings while formal cloths attract classic, understated earrings, just as glamorous cloths go with dazzling earrings. Also, make sure the style you wear is current. Simple designs will always look good.

How to be a
gentleman BY Pupwaya Timothy Dibal
T
here is a saying that a title does not make a gentleman, his manners do. Good manners are therefore very important. Acting appropriate in a way that is socially acceptable and respectful, try and show some respect and consideration for others. Excellent manners can help you to have better relationships with people you know and those you will meet. There are things you should avoid in public as a gentleman. Speak politely: While speaking to people, keep your voice as low as possible. Don’t discuss rude topics in public, and never use harsh words on people. Do not interrupt or override another person when he or she is speaking. Do not smoke in the presence of people or in a social gathering. Smoking in front of people will portray you as man with no manners. Try as much as possible not to do that because some people might be allergic to the smoke. Do not answer a call or make a call when you

are in a meeting. Observe office ethics, and even if you want to answer a call in the office, do not shout. Always excuse yourself when you are leaving the dining table. As a gentleman you should observe table manners while eating. Do not rest your elbow on the table, and don’t talk while eating. As a gentleman, you should never be late to an appointment. Being late means showing lack of seriousness and people will not trust you. Always stick to the right time, let your 8am be 8am. Watch your language: Swearing indicates a lack of self-control, and at worst, a lack of good manners. So keep your mouth clean and let your yes be yes and no be no. Do not dress shabbily and go to a business meeting. Try as much as possible to dress nice and look neat. Wear the appropriate outfit to the right occasion.

Dr. Nathaniel Adewole Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada - FCT. MOBILE: 0803 803 9182 EMAIL: nadewole2013@gmail.com
For the past five months I have not seen my ovulation discharge signs; but I get severe constant lower abdominal pain that lasts till my next period. Mammeeer
“For a more objective way of testing for ovulation, there are ovulation test kits that can be used at home, which are sold in key pharmacy shops.”
How old are you? Are you trying to get pregnant? For a more objective way of testing for ovulation, there are ovulation test kits that can be used at home, which are sold in key pharmacy shops. Another way to test for ovulation is by follicular tracking and doing hormonal assay. You can meet your gynaecologist for the latter ones. Concerning the pains, see your doctor. Possible causes include pelvic inflammatory diseases and endometriosis. Kindly see your family physician.
UNUSUAL MOVEMENT IN SEVERAL PARTS OF MY BODY I am 23 years and gave birth to a baby. After six months I started experiencing movement in several parts of my body. Please, what is the cause? It is a psychosomatic disorder. Most likely, there is nothing physical moving in your body. It is a sensation. I will advise you to see your family physician, and if necessary, mental health physician.
THE SEMEN DOESN’T STAY INSIDE HER After meeting my wife the sperm comes out instead of staying inside her. What is the cause of this? What is the medical solution to it? I went for a test and my doctor said my sperm was okay. As I mentioned in some of my previous write-ups, it is a common complaint among couples with the problem of infertility. The sperms are invisible to the eyes and are carried in the semen. As soon as the semen is deposited, the active sperms swim towards the cervical canal to the fallopian tubes to meet the ovum or eggs. The semen is a medium and does not enter into the cervical canal and uterus. If it does, most women would be coming down with serious infections. Since your semen analysis is okay, let your wife go for the necessary checkup.

WHAT IS PROLACTIN? What is prolactin in a woman? What is the cause of high prolactin? Can it cause damage to a woman’s body? David, Jos Prolactin is the hormone responsible for lactation in a woman. It is usually high during breastfeeding. The cause of high prolactin may be due to excessive production in the pituitary. In quite a number of cases, one may not know the cause of high prolactin. High prolactin could be associated with abnormal hormones in the body like in polycystic ovaries and can produce masculine changes in a woman. But in most cases, apart from galactorrhea, other changes are noted. Let her see a gynaecologist.
CAN I GO FOR FLUSHING? As a woman of 40 years, can I still go for the flushing of fallopian tubes and the womb? Advise me. I had tubal blockage after two kids. Nneka, Lagos. I am a little bit skeptical about the use of the word, flushing. How was the tubal blockage diagnosed? Was it by HSG? Have you done laparoscopy and dye tests? This will help to confirm the diagnosis and help to identify those that may benefit from surgery. Before any advice could be given, one also has to know your spouse’s seminal fluid analysis result. If your last child birth is a long time and the tubes are confirmed blocked at laparoscopy and dye test; also, provided there is financial capability, the best option is invitro fertilisation (IVF). In case there is no financial capability, then in well selected cases, surgery to ‘open’ the tubes can be done, though the success rate is much lower when compared with IVF. Take note, flushing and repeated flushing are of doubtful benefit.

uwal Zubair Adam is a member of the Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (MOPAN) and chairman, Capital Vision Media and Marketing Service. He is also a movie producer and marketer. Among other things, he spoke to Tambari on the current federal government’s intervention in the entertainment industry. Recently, there was a workshop for over 200 movie practitioners in Kano; what was it all about? The workshop was in line with the federal government initiative of Project Act Nollywood, through which it allocates grants to production companies and independent producers for commercially viable films. The programme was categorised into three segments: capacity building, production funds, and distribution funds as the last category, which is an ongoing project. What actually happened was that the National Video Censorship Board organised a workshop on how to obtain a license as a prerequisite for accessing the distribution funds. After the workshop, the authorities at the Project Act Nollywood also came to Kano to educate potential beneficiaries on what was required to successfully access the funds set aside by the project. They said the requirement included a Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration, license from the National Censorship Board, membership affiliation certification, business strategy/plan, among others. However, what actually necessitated the recent workshop was the inability of most of our members to effectively present a well defined business strategy/plan when they applied for the fund. And that aspect is very crucial to accessing the fund. Project Act Nollywood found it very important to sensitise us on the processes and procedures of developing a valid business plan/strategy. That was why they organised the recently concluded workshop. Some are saying the criteria outlined for accessing the funds are very difficult to fulfill; is that true? In the first place, we have to thank the federal government for setting aside these funds
in assisting the entertainment industry in the nation. However, it is apparent that we in the core North lack the exposure attached to modern business processes. These requirements needed by Project Act Nolywood ought to have been met by practitioners, but due to our attitude and lack of exposure we were very reluctant. We felt it was too much. Perhaps I can say that the issue of business plan/strategy is alien to us. This is because people believe that if you can speak English, you can as well as develop a business plan. Most of us do not really know that there is a technical know-how attached to the whole issue. That was why our business plan was rejected when we applied. In reality, the criteria are not too strict, the problem is our conservative nature in approaching issues.
TAMBARI APRIL 5, 2015
There is nothing wrong with Project Act Nollywood - Auwal Adam
As a potential beneficiary, are you satisfied with the criteria? To us, nothing is strict there as far as accessing funds is concerned. You don’t expect to be given a huge amount of money without some conditions. As far as our company is concerned, the criteria are in order, and adhering to them is necessary. Project Act Nollywood is being accused of tilting more to Nollywood than Kannywood; is that true? Actually, I don’t buy the idea of basing issues on ethnic differences. This is because in most cases they are all speculations, not facts. The fact here is that people at the Nollywood axis of the entertainment industry are more exposed to modern business procedures than us here. Basically, you can see why they stand a better chance than us in accessing these funds. They are more committed and organised than we are. They can endure all the barriers and challenges to achieve their target. Maybe it is the upper hand which Nollywood has over Kannywood that made people to look at access to the funds as being tilted towards one side. This is my understanding of the issue; anybody can have a contrary understanding. Recently, some producers defied a six-month ban on one of the actresses; what do you have to say about this? I regard this issue as a personal one because the genesis was a misunderstanding between two artistes. The issue here is, if leaders can make an injunction on an issue and members would defy such injunction, then there is a question mark on the integrity and quality of the leadership in place.

Idoma traditional marriage BY Pupwaya Timothy Dibal
I
n Idoma land, marriage is considered a lifelong union between a man and a woman. The Idoma people are from Benue State. When an Idoma man is about 25 years old and has the financial and physical capability to maintain a wife and children, he searches for a woman of his choice, who must be at least 18 years old. He informs his family of his desire and they will in turn choose a go-between (a person who is familiar with the girl’s family). The go-between investigates the family of the prospective bride to ascertain that the family has no history of specific ailment or any other problem. If the result of this investigation is positive, the prospective groom’s family visits the woman’s family with gifts of kolanut and hot drinks, during which they state their reason for coming. Before the payment of the bride price, there is the initial stage of the proper introduction. During the initial introduction, the date for the wedding ceremony is set by the husbandto-be and his family. And if the date is not accepted by either family, there might be some deliberations which will lead to an acceptable date. On the same day, a list of required traditional items to be brought to the girl’s family on the day of the engagement is given to the man. Basic among these items are walking stick, cap and cloths for the father and mother of the girl, some tubers of yam, bag of salt, a shegoat, some bottles of palm oil, hot drinks and suitcase for the wife-to-be. These items (which are more than those listed in the list above) are brought to the family of the girl on the engagement day, signifying that the husband-to-be can take care of his wife. Before
the bride is handed over to her husband, her age group will pose as a mock barrier to those who want to take her and extort money from the anxious groom’s family. On the engagement day, and in addition to the bride price, the groom must pay a dowry first to the bride’s mother and another dowry to the father. This involves a significant amount of bargaining. Also, every member of the bride’s mother’s family must be given money, with the groom’s family determining the amount. The bride’s age group and her more distant relatives also are given money, with the amount varying with the level of the bride’s education and productivity. Then the groom’s family gives the bride a rooster and some money. If she accepts these gifts and gives them to her mother, she indicates her acceptance of the groom and is showered with gifts and money, but if she refuses to marry the man after these gifts have been provided, the bride’s family will return everything. At the end of the eating and drinking, the wife is finally handed over to her husband’s family. The mother of the bride is also expected to buy her daughter kitchen utensils because the new bride is not expected to go to the market after five days of being married. Ideally, the bride is expected to be a virgin as it is a source of pride and joy to her family. If she is found not to be a virgin she is taken to the husband’s family’s ancestral shrine for cleansing.

Spices and their health benefits BY Victoria Onehi
O
ver time, people have sought out certain spices, not only for culinary purposes but for medicinal uses as well. When cooking, these spices are helpful and handy and give a beautiful aroma, flavour and taste to your meal.
Curry turmeric: Curry turmeric is a very popular spice. The most common and advantageous ingredients of curry powder are turmeric, coriander, sweet basil and red pepper. Mrs. Sarah Abagai, head of Dietetics Department at the National Hospital says curry is a flavour enhancer and serves as a food preservative. Eating a healthy amount of curry powder can increase the health of your digestive system as well.
Black cumin: Sprinkle black cumin seeds on a salad or combine them with lemon for a savoury sauce. Its medicinal values include reducing headache and toothache. Black pepper is a berry that has a distinctive spicy taste. You can add it to nearly any savoury meal for some subtle heat. It stimulates appetite and helps relieve gas.
it should be taken hot. Ginger tea, prepared by adding a few pieces of ginger into boiled water before adding tea leaves, is another effective remedy for frequent colds and associated fevers. Ginger juice is aphrodisiac. For better results, health experts say half a teaspoon of ginger juice honey with half boiled egg taken at night reduces premature ejaculation or involuntary seminal discharge. Mrs. Sarah Abagai says, “Ginger has anticancer and anti-inflammatory properties which help patients with arthritis. It is also rich in antioxidant that helps clear lungs, thereby removing congestion. That is why it helps people with cold and cough.” Ginger is available in two forms - fresh and dried. Both forms are effective. As the taste of ginger is very palatable, it is carefully adopted to the palate by putting it in vegetables. When buying ginger, fresh is best. Be sure to avoid ginger with dry, wrinkled, skin, mold or soft spots.
Chili peppers: Chili peppers contain capsaicin, which is generally stimulating to the body. It increases the sensitivity of nerve endings and increases the heart rate. Eating peppers also releases endorphins in the body.
What makes garlic special Onions: Onions are bulb vegetables that can be sweet or spicy, depending on variety. Very popular in almost every part of the world, it has great medicinal values too. Again, Abagai says onions have antioxidant which helps to lower cholesterol.
Ginger: Ginger is widely used in variety of culinary preparations. Apart from being used for cooking, the benefits of ginger also include serving as an important ingredient in the cure of some ailments. The health benefits of ginger come from chemicals called volatile oils, specifically gingerols and shogaols that also give ginger its spicy, pungent taste. Those oils stimulate your body to produce more digestive juices and help neutralise the stomach acids that cause cramping, nausea and diarrhea. The herb is excellent remedy for coughs and colds. Extracted juice of ginger with honey is taken three of four times a day in case of cough. In case of cold, ginger cut into small pieces is boiled in a cup of water. After straining, with half-teaspoon of sugar,

Allicin, the vital compound in the pod, is known to have great anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-oxidant properties. That is why garlic is best when it’s finely chopped, minced or pureed. Allicin in garlic blocks the activity of angiotensin II (a protein that is responsible for increase in blood pressure) and helps in reducing blood pressure. To help control your blood pressure you could add garlic to your daily meals. Apart from that you could also eat one pod of raw garlic on an empty stomach to keep your blood pressure under control. Mrs. Sarah Abagai says, “Garlic helps remove plaques which allow blood to move freely in the arteries, thereby lowering blood pressure.” Garlic’s aphrodisiac properties are due to its ability to increase circulation and intensify an orgasm.

Detox power of smoothies BY Mulikatu Mukaila
S
moothies, especially of the green kind, are filled with vitamins, minerals and nutrients that are already pre-digested by the act of blending, which will also go a long way in getting a flawless look. Vegetables and fruits are full of fiber that will act in flushing away the toxins that have been released overnight and need to be properly eliminated. Smoothies are also a great bonus to a clearer skin. By replacing your late night meal with a healthy smoothie, your skin can be clearer and more radiant within a short while. If you interrupt the cleaning process with a big morning meal that has to be digested, the cleaning doesn’t finish, and those toxins are left inside to cause trouble like breakouts and dull skin. So try a new recipe added with smoothies and give your skin a great treat.
