Enyeama whose brilliant saves saw Nigeria winning the AFCON nations cup in 2013 made his decision to retire known on his instagram page. Yakzoolo Ramadan posted a question: “Was he playing because of the captainship or out of patriotism?” The netizen bade him farewell in his words: “We wish him all the best and pray for his better replacement for Super Eagle.” A netizen, Jovial Abraham simply posted: “Bye bye” on Facebook just another, Jacob Anthony said its an “Old story.” In what seem not to clearly express his thoughts,

Nigera @55: Time for us to grow patriotism, revere unity symbols? Text by Eseohe Ebhota @sleek_ diva88, Simon E. Sunday @ SimonEchewofun, Ibrahim K. Sule @ikabirsule & Latifat Opoola @LAtifatOpoola

ifty five years ago, our dear country Nigeria gained her Independence from her colonial masters, Britain. We were told that that day was a remarkable time in the history of this country. The independence also gave way to the birth of our own national symbols: The flag, coat of arms, Anthem and National pledge. After Independence, Nigeria had new national symbols: the flag, coat of arms, National Anthem and pledge. Hence this week, as part of our celebration of Nigeria’s 55th independence anniversary, we decided to bring some additional information about our national symbols. Facts about the National Symbols The Flag: Prior to its invention, what we used then was “The Union Jack”. The presentday Nigerian flag was designed in 1959 and officially hoisted on October 1, 1960. The flag is a vertical bicolour of green and white. The two green stripes represent Nigeria’s natural wealth, while the white band represents peace. The flag, an adoption of the winning entry from Michael Taiwo Akinkumi in a competition held in 1959 had an original submission of a red radiating sun badge in the centre of one white vertical with a green vertical on each side. After the badge was removed by the judges, the flag has remained unchanged. Like other countries, Nigeria has special symbols for civil and naval vessels. Some of its states also have flags. Akinkumi who was a 23 year-old student then, was studying at the Norwich Technical College, England when he saw an advert calling for the design entries. Coat-of-Arms: The Nigerian coat-ofarms feature an eagle mounted on a black shield, which is trisected, by two wavy silver bands. Two white chargers support the shield, and at its base is a wreath (coctus spectabilis flowers, cast in the national colours of white and green). The Anthem/Pledge: The National Anthem used at independence in 1960, titled “Nigeria, we hail thee” was written by a Briton, Miss Williams. It was replaced in 1 October 1978, by a new anthem. The Nigerian National Anthem was replaced on October 1, 1978 by a new anthem. Mr. Ben Odiase, Director of Music of the Nigerian Police Band, composed the music. Nigerians React YOUTHVILLE spoke to a cross section of Nigerians about the significance of our national symbols and if they kept to its meanings. One of them a journalist based in Abuja, Dyep Shibayan said Nigerians no longer respect the Independence Day, as the importance attached to them continues to erode by the year. He said the kind of fanfare that used to greet the anniversary of Nigeria’s independence is no longer there, since the day would come and pass without one noticing

visible manifestation of the celebration from m Nigerians. “There has not been much meaningg attached to the Independence Day lately. If you put it on a scale of 1 - 10, I think I willll give it 4, that is less than half. “In the past, you see citizens expressingg their happiness on the day, which is no longer er there now. In the past, you see some peoplee dress white or green attires, to symbolize thee Nigeria’s independence. It not like that now, w,” he said. Speaking on the respect for the national al anthem by Nigerians, he said the retrogression n has not isolated that respect. “What I will sayy about that is simple: patriotism is actually on n the decline in Nigeria.” On his part, Mohammed Mustaphaa Malumfashi gave a contrary view, sayingg that although he acknowledges that thee g, importance of Independence Day is waning, yet Nigerians still celebrate the day. u He said during each anniversary, “You will see Nigerian flags along the roads or at traffic intersections being sold. And you seee some people putting such flags either insidee their cars or, like taxi drivers, on top of thee car. I noticed that even during last week’s’ celebration.” Some younger Nigerians believe that the patriotic hearts typical of citizens in the past is waxing cold. One Ibrahim Bako at Mararaba, Nasarawa state gave an instance “when you see Nigerians walking at public functions

disregarding a stand-still symbol when the national anthem is being recited. “Patriots are expected to stand at attention when the anthem is sung but it is no more the case. They will tell you that it is not compulsory when you confront them,” the university student said. Fatima Bello, a nursing intern around Nyanya, a suburb near Abuja lamented the eroding maintenance culture in the country. She described a typical situation where the Nigerian flag a N fl is lleft f to tear away without h replacement at a federal hospital in Asokoro, Abuja. There were more reactions as to the fate that lies ahead for younger generations. Okon Peters, an educationist at Abuja Central Area urged parents, teachers and educators to

revive the patriotism instilling strategies of primary and high schools. “Pupils and students must be compelled to recite the pledge and anthem at school assembly grounds. They should also be thought whatt patriotism is despite the stories off corruption and wrong doings they mustt have been exposed to in the presentt Nigeria,” he said. In his words, an elder Mallam m Mohammed Soba in Kaduna statee believes the new government will restoree good governance as it is the panacea forr patriotism. “If the leaders do the right thing, they will be a great role model for Nigerian to emulate and be more patriotic. The leaders must go back to the principle of nationalism which our forefathers preached,” Mallam Soba said.

Fashion trends that never disappear

T

he world of fashion is a dynamic one. Trends rends change and that “in thing” might just go o out of fashion before you can get your hands nds on it. However, if you run out of chasing all the he latest trends, it might be worthwhile to investt in the evergreen wardrobe essentials that never go out of fashion. Each season has its own style which every fashion-conscious lady keeps track of. However it’s not always easy to keep up p with fashion trends. Now ladies, can you afford rd brushing up your entire wardrobe every few months? I bet not all can. To help you keep up with trends in the fashion world, I’ll give you a list of a few fashion items that never go out of style and would also help you cut costs: Floral prints: Floral prints are cute, flirty and feminine hence they are definitely one of those clothes that never go out of style. They can be used to sew gowns, jumpsuits, shirts, trousers, just name it. They can be worn by anyone, anytime and are available in various colours, fabrics, cuts and styles so you really have to look for one that perfectly complements your body and personality type. Scarves: They come in different types: Printed, plain, silk, cotton - you really can’t have enough of these because they can breathe life into the dullest outfits and serve as great utility items when you want to save your hair from the onslaught of a bike ride. They can make you look spunky and somber, depending on how you style them.

S l Sunglasses: They cover most of your face, but you love them. Not only do these oversized sunglasses protect you from the sun but they also hide imperfections on your face like dark circles, awful tans, and breakouts. We can say they are “lifesavers”. Wear them with anything while you look chic and classy. Fitted Jeans: I had to include this because it’s one of my favourite outfits. They’ll never ever go out of style because these trousers can be worn with anything under the sun. Every fashion conscious lady and girl has them in their closet, so there’s no denying that fitted jeans aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Leather Handbags: These are great accessories as well as reliable friends for any busy woman. Leather handbags are valuable fashion items both in point of style and when it comes to the financial side. A high quality leather bag can cost a small fortune, especially if you buy it from a reputable store.

Young entrepreneurs face key challenges he major challenge that young entrepreneurs faced is lack of fund. I believe that the present administration is making effort to do something. We have Small and Medium Scale Enterprise Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) who should render technical assistance; there is also the Abuja Enterprises Agency. With a viable business plan at its competition, they could fund it base on the core value. The essence of this is helping trying to correct the deficiency in funding.

here is issue of government’s policy. The National Agency for Foods, Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has many requirements for starters. Young entrepreneurs who want to set up pure-water company but because of these requirements they cannot. There are other challenges including that of competition. People hardly patronise indigenous products but I believe the present administration is trying to solve this problem. Likely solutions to the challenges he policies are good but the will to execution them is lacking. The government should ensure the policies formulated are executed effectively. The Vice President said recently that SMEDAN will have more support to help young entrepreneurs.

Youngsters unveil smart IT health bracelet in Abuja Text by Judd-Leonard Okafor

T

hink of all the gizmos young people like to tinker with. Then think of them all in single wristsized package. That’s what a group of 20-something-year-olds is hoping to achieve, and they’ve plunged into the market headlong. Orbra is the name behind a smart bracelet which launched last week in Abuja, with promise of spilling beyond the city to capture a mass market beginning with young people. It is unique on the market for gadgets and information technology. It is the only IT startup in Nigeria with each of its entire six-man team aged less than 30. Orbra started out in 2010 with “wanting to put the same technology in people’s hands at a very affordable price,” said founder, Ololade Otayemi. “The smart bracelet attempts to climb into the hearts of Nigerians by incorporating healthful gizmos in a tiny package: it monitors calorie

intake, counts steps when pacing is needed for exercise, alerts the wearer when they’ve sat for too long, and monitors sleep quality by night. On a Bluetooth range, it also synchronises with a mobile phone and reports incoming SMS and calls, displays missed calls, vibrates when a wearer gets too from their phone as to forget it-and can emit a sharp find-me beeps when a phone synced to it goes missing,” he said. Other than hardware sourced overseas, Orbra designs, packages and brands its products domestically, claiming a To buy into the Nigerian market, it has had to battle initial acceptance and scepticism, which have begun to wane in time. The team is still unable to get the credit and investors it needs, and relies on personal savings and borrowings from family to have sustained it this far.

Bauchi govt tasked on youth engagement Text from Balarabe Alkassim, Bauchi coalition of youth organisations in Bauchi state under the aegis of Bauchi Youth Forum (BYF) has called on the state government to engage youth in productive ventures to reduce unemployment rate. Coordinator of the Forum, Jeremiah Panshak Kassem said this at a youth training and event held in commemoration of Nigeria 55th year Independence in Bauchi, weekend. The group said government must show more commitment to improving the lot of the youth, beginning from the budgeting process. Kassem said the aim of the Forum is to raise awareness on the role of youths in development and the need for them to be involved in nation building. He said: “This programme will promote young people’s effective inclusive civic engagement at all levels. It is an established fact. We want more efforts from governments at all levels and other stakeholders to engage youths if not, the resultant effect has been bad. It often resulted in the death of many, just as a good number have taken to cultism, insurgency, and armed robbery. A participant, Maryam Garba said engagement and participation of youth is essential to achieve sustainable human development. “Sadly, opportunities for the youth to engage politically, economically and socially are not available,” she said.
