Lagarde’s visit makes wave...>

V

isiting Nigeria for the second time, the nation’s media has been hit with tales about the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Christine Lagarde, especially after spending four days in the country this week. Lagarde was received by the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun and the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele at the Nnamdi Azikiwe airport in Abuja last Monday. The visit as spread by major news media has generated varied comments across social media platforms. One Munguci Denis Etriga posted: “Hope President Buhari is not that frustrated already to keep relevance in the face of the hardship

of failing to meet his election promises. We know things may be hard at the moment for Nigeria but the country is definitely on the right path, alone without the IMF.” Another netizen, Abunyo who reacted to her advice to the legislators on raising Value Added Tax (VAT) of luxury goods wrote: “Nice one madam Lagarde. I don’t know your motive in Nigeria. But from what you have said, if really that is your motive of being here, then I applaud it.” In suspicious tones, netizen Opara posted: “I hope the nation has not gone back to economic slavery,” as another Gabriel Martines said: “May God save Nigeria from neo-colonialism. Chaii! Another slave trade.”

Kannywood:

I sang over 3,000 songs in 12yrs, Sardaunan Mawaka says Abdul’aziz Dahiru also called ‘Sardaunan Mawaka’ and ‘Garkuwan Matasa,’ from Katsina state is a popular Kannywood singer. In an interview with YOUTHVILLE, the 29 year old spoke on what inspired him to be a singer, the challenges he faces in Kannywood and what he has achieved. Text from Bashir Liman, Jos

W

hat inspired you to join the Kannywood industry? As a teenager I liked to entertain, educate and inform people. Growing up, I kept thinking about the suitable avenue that will make me to reach people swiftly and easily, and then Kannywood showed up. For choosing music, I can remember I attended an event and saw a singer. How he sang and his message was magnificent and amazing to me. From that day, I told myself I will contribute my quota in educating people through music. How did you get the nickname ‘Mai Abokan Juna’ and ‘Garkuwan Matasan Arewa’? I got it as a result of Hausa novel I wrote in 2000. The title of the book is ‘Abokan Juna’. I got ‘Garkuwan Matasa’ when a renowned business woman, Hajiya Zulai listened to one of my songs. The theme is on how northern youth could be more productive. After listening to my song, she told me the song will serve as a catalyst to stimulate youth to be more productive, and therefore, there is need for me to get recognition. She organized special occasion and crowned me ‘Garkuwan Matasan Arewa’. Musicians from my home state, Katsina crowned me with the title, ‘Sardaunan Mawaka’, and then, I named my production company ‘Mai Abokan Juna Entertainment’. I named it after my first novel and album that shot to be stardom. How long have you been in the Kannywood scene? I have been in Kannywood since 2002. I lost count of my songs in 2011, but I sang about 3000 songs. My best song is gospel song; I sang it for the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) titled ‘Mai Girman Daraja’. I praised him by highlighting his good qualities that his followers must emulate. The song that gave me sleepless nights was a wedding song, for the daughter of a former Deputy Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria. I sang the song three times but like magic; I couldn’t find it in my computer for processing. It was after I sang it the fourth time that I could write it on the disc.

It was rumoured that you are related to the late actor, Ahmad S Nuhu. What will you say? I heard about that too. At a concert in Kano last year, many people asked me whether I had blood relation with the late Ahmad S Nuhu because we look alike. I am using this medium to clear the air that, I don’t have blood relation with the late actor, but he was my mentor. What achievements have you recorded ed so far in music? My best achievement was having teeming ming fans across Hausa speaking countries in West Africa. ca. I built four bedrooms flat, went to Hajj, and have visited many countries to attend concerts. There are so many more to mention. As a musician I am privileged ed to see many top shots in Nigeria, Niger Republic and Chad Republic. I derive pride in music and I am proud to be a musician.

Are you planning to release any song or album this year? I am working on a special album, it consists of gospel songs. I shot two of the album’s song in Dubai, the songs have Arabian rhythm. I shot the third one in Saudi Arabia, and I shot the remaining ones in Nigeria precisely in Abuja, Kano and Kaduna. My plan is to release the album early in January, J y, 2016. I am also set to start shooting my film, ‘Abokan Juna’ early this year. Aside that, I am working on thematic songs for agriculture of which I will feature up to 20 Kannywood singers like Sadi Sidi Sharifai, Nazifi Asnanic, Adam A Zango, among others.

What are the challenges you face andd how are you overcoming them? I faced stiff competition from some colleagues; olleagues; they tried many times to draw me back, butt I refused to succumb to their pressure. I remained ned focus, undaunted and strong to face the hooks they threw at me, and God be the glory I am going higher day by day. Many singers say they do face stigma in the north. Have you experienced such? There are different categories in music; ic; my style is unique. I don’t sing a song that will not pass ass a message. When you listen to my song you must att least get one message that will make you better in life. fe. There is no way in my songs you will come across a foul oul language. If you can remember, I was crowned ‘Garkuwan uwan Matasa’ as a result of my song. If I am not doing what at is good I can’t be crowned. Who among of your colleagues do you enjoy working with? I enjoy working with all of my colleagues. ues. They are everything to me; they made my work lookk easier, and without them I wouldn’t have gone far. I am m thanking them for the chance they gave me to work with them.

One way among many that col has been proven to prevent the chilly ha weather is wearing black outfits. w Black is a colour that is known to absorb a person’s own heat, hence making you warm when cold. It also absorbs the heat coming from the sun, which can also make you warm. Besides Besid its ability to keep the body warm, there are other o reasons why people wear black. A lady who simply gave her name as Comfort told YOUTH YOUTHVILLE “I love wearing black of its ability to ‘go’ with w any other colour. And being a light-skinned person, p black wears look good on me. Concurring w with her, Grace Audu self-employed, said she loves w wearing black because of its unique ability of fitting any a other colour. “Black outfits look good on me. Young Nigerian using Instagram to provide relationship advice Text by Latifat Opoola @LatifatOpoola

iving relationship advice to young couples isn’t usually an easy task but 27 year old Ziya’atulhaqq Usman Tahir, says it is her calling. Her instagram page has provided her followers with a platform to air their troubles and her advice has taken social media especially in the north by storm, amassing over 48,000 followers. Ziya’atulhaqq who works as a caterer for weddings told Dailymail online during a recent interview that she started after offering advice to her female friend. “She was having a problem

with her boyfriend. I explained things to her, but she didn’t want to believe me. So I asked her if I could post her story on my Instagram page and people will advise her. She agreed and that’s how it started” she told the magazine. The self acclaimed Agony Aunt who lives in Bauchi believes part of her success comes from the tech-loving Nigerian culture, where social media is exceedingly well used, according to the report. ‘Nigerians, we are iPhone fanatics, everybody wants to have an iPhone. Our network is very good,We like new things. If something new comes out, we want to use it” she said.

Longer tweets coming to Twitter soon? Text by Victoria Bamas @sinach360 witter is reported to be building a new feature that will allow users to tweet things longer than the traditional 140-character limit. It is reported to be considering increasing its per-tweet character count from 140 to 10,000 a potential move that instantly sent the hashtag #twitter10k to trend after the initial story by re/code.net. CEO of Twitter Jack Dorsey took to twitter on Tuesday after the alleged increase in characters generated controversy among users.

T

Dorsey did not confirm nor deny the upcoming 10,000-character limit in the block of screenshot of text he twitted but he did write that lifting the character limit is not without it merits. “We’ve spent a lot of time observing what people are doing on Twitter, and we see them taking screenshots of text and tweeting it,” Dorsey wrote. He continued “Instead, what if that text... was actually text? Text that could be searched. Text that could be highlighted. That’s more utility and power”

Reacting to the report twitter user Anshul Saxena @ AskAnshul calls for an edit button “Sir @twitter 10,000 characters limit not a good idea, 140 represents Creativity, don’t ruin it, instead #Twitter10k make our tweets editable.” While annie @googlenjh is not against lifting the limit but not 10,000 characters “Can u twitter just expand the characters limit up to 200 or a little more?? it would be way better #Twitter10k” and Ann T Bush @AnnTBush tweeted “If I wanted #Twitter10k, I’d be on Facebook right now.”

hree major characteristics of a successful entrepreneur are creativity, productivity and patience says Ahmed Umara, the CEO of AandAFootwares. He also said an entrepreneur’s success is also measured by certain skills and accommodations they possess that make them stand out in their everyday life. These include being fearless, persistent and innovative. During a visit to Daily Trust, Umara told YOUTHVILLE he started A and A Footwears in March last year with a close friend in Abuja.

Their love for quality shoes was what inspired the start of the business said the indigene of Yobe State. “When the idea came at first, we wanted to make office shoes, but we couldn’t find someone around here that could make them, and so we settled for the slippers. But we are still working on expanding and including office shoes to our products” he said. Umara, who holds masters degree in Information system management from Sheffield University, United Kingdom said they started the business with about half a million gotten from both his and

YOUTHVILLE

his partners personal savings. “We started very small. When we did our survey, we saw that a lot of people were making shoes but not everyone can afford to buy them and so we decided to make quality shoes for our target customers who are the middle and lower income earners, one they can easily afford” he said. He also said the business is a very lucrative one like any other business, it only depends on if one has the determination and drive to see it succeed. Umara boasted that the quality of his product is what gives his customers the confidence to remain loyal but was quick to state that it hasn’t always been this way. “When we first started, the sole of our slippers wasn’t too good and our customers would

complain about them but now the quality and finish is much better” he said with pride. The young employer of labour complained about selling on credit adding that some close relatives tend forget it actually costs a lot in the production and would buy the product on credit for months before paying. Umara acknowledges that viral impact always helps in building any brand and confessed he gets his orders mostly from social media but noted that his company isn’t too viral on social media because he want to take it slow and make sure the company can handle the pressure that comes with the demand. He advises youths to always find what they are good at and start something no matter how small it is. “The Nigerian environment doesn’t help start ups but we are advising people to go for it no matter how small it is. Criticism will always come but it should be a motivation for you” he warned.

Director-General of Industrial Training Fund(ITF), Mrs. Juliet Chukkas Onaeko, who disclosed this recently while commissioning the mobile training units and unveiling training programmes for Internally Displaced Persons(IDPs) in Abuja, said the initiative will save the federal government about N180billion annually. She said in a statement that the Fund will continue to promote and encourage acquisition of skills in industry and commerce with a view to generating pool

of indigenous trained manpower adequate to meet the needs of private and public sectors of the economy. Minister of State for Industry, Hajia Aisha Abubakar assured that the federal government will work through the ITF to promote job creation and youth empowerment programmes. She said President Buhari’s directive that all internally displaced persons be returned to their communities will be successfully executed next year given the fact that the mobile training units acquired and commissioned by the ITF is capable of penetrating all parts of the country. She said with the mobile training units capable of providing skills acquisition in various trade areas, it was only a matter of time before all internally displaced persons start rebuilding their lives with the skills acquired.
