hat inspired you to study medicine? The deep rooted desi to serve humanity and to desire be a worthy ambassador of my com community inspired me to study Me Medicine. W Who were your major in influences in your chosen field? Basically my dear loving p parents, Prof. Adam Ahmad and P Prof. Juwairiyya Badamasiuy. D Despite their heculian task of rraising a family and several o obstacles which they faced, tthey were committed to p pursuing their respective a academic goals. These built iin me the confidence of ccommitting to my dream of sstudying Medicine. How do you view the present h healthcare delivery system? There are certain challenges w which include the inability of go governments to devise proactive m measures in meeting up the de demands of the health sector. Th There is critical inadequacy of
health professionals in Nigeria; for instance, Nigeria has about 35,000 doctors serving a population of about 170million. This means there is just one doctor for 4,000 patients and it is grossly inadequate; the country needs about 273,000 doctors to serve its current population. The inverse nature of the care law is another issue. Despite the overall deficit of health professionals, there is gross disparity in their distribution across regions. For instance the rural population which constitutes about 70 per cent of Nigerians with obviously more health challenges have less number of health professionals and services than their urban counterparts. The other constraint that must be overcome is the lack of harmony amongst health professionals since a house divided within cannot stand firmly. What could be the posers for students in the medicine line? Medicine is such a tough course globally and students studying Medicine spend more time comparing with their colleagues studying other courses. However, in Nigeria, the incessant strikes by the Academic Staff
Union of Universities (ASUU), the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and others make students to spend one to two extra years I the six year course. I believe relevant authorities should exempt medical students from strikes and devise more efficient ways of managing time. This will help reduce the burden of spending extra years. What is your advice for young ones venturing into medicine and surgery? My advice for them is to make the intention to study Medicine for the purpose of serving their God and for humanity sake. No matter the obstacles they encounter, they should always believe in one self, be dedicated and persevere. I have always advised youth to have influential role models that they look up to and possibly seek advice from. Most important of all the advices, is prayers. It is the key to success, provided other advices above are followed. What are your other hobbies? My hobbies include recitation of the Glorious Qur’an, reading, plating hair and chatting with family and friends. I also love traveling a lot with my husband, Dr. Shehu Salihu Umar.

Text from Emma Elekwa, Awka About 124 unemployed youth in Adaziani in Anaocha Local Government of Anambra state have benefited from the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development of the National Youth Service Corps Scheme. The youth were trained on agro-allied ventures, cosmetology, GSM repairs and computer training organised by four corps members as their Community Development Services (CDS). Speaking after the training, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) State Coordinator, Mrs. Robinca Odigwe commended the corpers: Ayibakari Perfect, Uchefe Emmanuel, Anigabor Daves and Abadike Samson for impacting on the lives of other youth. She urged the trainees to take the lessons seriously in view of the present economic hardship and scarcity of job opportunities. She appealed to the council chairman to further assist in providing soft loans to ensure they are properly established. The corpers commended Chief Godwin Okeke, a philanthropist in the community who had supported the project actualisation.

By writing books and organizing free seminars, I know I can attain that and I don’t need to be a governor or a president to render my services in touching lives.” On the key challenges to the success of his book, Bukar said many youth do not read books. “The major challenge is that most youth now are not reading books and then governments are not fully

M
y quest towards becoming a computer programmer, graphic designer One of our church member introduced me to computer programming and graphic designing. I left him and started mine after I had online tutorials from YouTube. I started as a dropout I couldn’t complete my secondary school education because there was no financial support. I taught myself the skills I needed and I was determined, and so I learnt on my own. What I have achieved with my skills I developed a Web application: linkup.com.ng. It is an uncommon application that links skilled
workers in the informal sector with people who need their services. For instance, if you need a painter in Apo-Abuja and you don’t know anyone around you, just go to the site and link up with one. If you have skills, you can go there write everything about yourself so people willing to hire could contact you. It is different from every other job websites where skilled workers are always left out. My reasons for creating the work app It was to help the common man, using his skills to cater to his needs. My targets are electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and so on people offering essential services but are neglected in the society. My second purpose of creating the app is to generate money as time
goes by. I don’t have competitors now in Nigeria because I am yet to see one of its kinds. How I develop the web app I developed the app myself. It took me three months with a lot of data and time before I was able to pay for the domain. The popularity is not much yet but I’m hoping it will grow. When people know about it, they will embrace it because this application helps people to locate any kind of skilled worker. You mustn’t be a graduate to develop apps I don’t think you must have a higher level of education before you can become web designer or graphic designer. What you just need is determination. Just go to YouTube or Google and you will learn everything you need to know.

DON’T’ forget to complete this look with an attractive blazer. You can add a little traditional flavour to your looks by wearing an Ankara jacket. This wouldn’t be a bad idea because it would even bring out that glam look you desire. As ladies, we love to look good no matter how simple we want to be, hence we know that fashion is all about making a statement. Creating a well-defined look with the right accessories will do the trick. So why not get the best out of your jeans this weekend and rock it?
