State of electricity …>
N
igerian netizens have taken to the social media to speak about the state of electricity in their area. These are what some of them said: On Facebook, Shu’aibu Idris Kofar-fada Bulangu wrote “In my area Bulangu, Jigawa state there is no improvement in electricity; we have spent two years without electricity since the poles broke down after a storm.” Abba Muazu also wrote: “Here in Maiduguri, for about three months now we have been living in darkness.” It is not different in Gombe state as Abdulrahman Haruna wrote: “In my area in Gombe, electricity is very bad because for now we do have power for just two hrs ON and another two hours OFF.” From Sokoto, Engr Nasiru Aliyu Wurno wrote: “In my area Nakasari, Sokoto state, it is business
as usual as there is no any improvement we see electricity after every six hour.” On the contrary, electricity hour in Kaduna seems to have risen. Abu-Rofi’at Moosa posted this: “There is serious improvement in electricity in my area Ungwan Dosa in Kaduna North local government.” Similar story is heard from a part of Jigawa state with Akinbola Abdur’Roqeeb Tunde posting: “My area in Jigawa state as usual we are blessed with 24+ seven days of uninterrupted power supply.” The trend was cut short by reports of blackouts from Benue and Cross River. Daniel Oloche Ngbede from Benue wrote: “There is no light in my village, Obagaji in Agatu LGA of Benue state.” “In Khana LGA of Rivers state, we hardly see light,” reported PrinceLucky Eguru Jr. through a Facebook post.

Yox the Professor as he is called is a young graphic entrepreneur and an Estate Management graduate from Covenant University in Ogun State. He speaks to YOUTHVILLE about his growing career.
Kunle Yoloye, owner of Yox Studios, a growing brand firm in Abuja
Text by Simon E. Sunday @SimonEchewofun, Eseohe Ebhota @sleek_diva88 & Victoria Bamas @Sinach360
W
here did your motivation to be a designer spring from? Well, I was born creative. I’ve been drawing from childhood. I just happen to grow in a family of professors. So in my family,
you must get educated. I decided that this is what I wanted to do as a child, and I asked myself: “why don’t I just continue to do this and be happy at it”? There is nothing like doing a job you love instead of working and complaining.
So how long has “Yox the professor” brand been in existence? Since about 2011, so that’s about four years plus now. I was about 26 years old then. What is your client base?
I work strictly for entrepreneurs. What we do for them is we help them with attracting clients using creative communication so what we do basically is that we help their businesses stand out using creative communications and by creative communications, we use three basic elements: Identity design, web design, print and production. How many people do you have working for you at present? Presently, we have two main staff and we have three or four contract staff. I went to school, I studied estate management. Let your children go to school but also train them along the line where they have talent because in a country where unemployment isn’t so fantastic, talent is what they would feed with tomorrow. Did you master the graphics vocation while in the university? Apparently until I left school, ‘No’. In fact, I had left school for three years before I even decided that I wanted to do branding. Branding for me was an accident so I went to school to study estate management. All I knew from youth and when I was a child was whatever I did, I wanted to have fun doing it no matter how much I made. So when I left school like I explained earlier, someone didn’t allow me use their Display Picture (DP), so I decided to create mine. Creating mine, people wanted to know that I did logos. I almost said no but someone said, why will you say no? Just say yes and I said yes. That is what has brought us to this day. From yes, I decided that okay people pay for this thing, let me develop more and that was how I started. As a self employed
creative expert, would you prefer a white collar job? (Laughs) Truth be told, I still work for someone as an estate person. I still help someone out with his estate firm. So estate cannot leave the body but to say that I would carry my C.V. now and start job hunting in an estate firm, I’m sorry No is the answer, except in the creative capacity. What are your efforts in training more youths in this? What I usually do is every year I put an advert on social media calling for people to submit their stuff. I train for free. And then in training for free, they’ll work for me and that time and get commissions on what I do. For a few years, I have been doing that. One of them is actually one of my staff today. So for a few years, I’ve been doing this but this year I didn’t have the time for that. But I train people once in a while and I never turn down conference avenues. What is the place of graphic designers in the Nigerian market? The good thing right now is that there are firms who understand though not too many yet but at least, firms who are beginning to understand that what you see and what you hear is what would determine who pays for your product. I think right now, firms are gradually
The essence of all beautiful art, all great art is gratitude. – Friedrich Nietzsche
beginning to understand the need for designers so I’m sure with time, more people would see the value of the creative industry. What is your monthly income range in the graphic or branding world? I would have loved to but the problem with Nigerians is that the moment you talk about money, they’ll say this guy is not humble. But it depends really. There are months you can make close to N600,000 depending on the quality of the project and there are months you make a hundred plus depending. So let’s say between the range of N100,000 to N500,000 monthly. What formal training would one need to become a graphic designer? If you’re at a stage where you can still go to school, you could search for good institutions where the course is being studied. But if you are not within that stage but you are interested, there are good schools. One of such is in Lagos known as Orange Academy. They are people who give good courses and practical hands-on experience. Just like you discovered your talent, some youths are yet to do so. What are your words to them? The situation now is that people only employ only those who can actually deliver, those who are skilled so in as much as these days, they require certificates, they still make sure they put you through the drills and in the creative industry, you will find out that most of us these days don’t even have a certificate in creative art. So I’ll advise people without talents especially the parents, if your children have talents let them go to school.

CBT discriminatory, anti rural people – Lecturer Text by SIMON E. SUNDAY with agency report @SimonEchewofun
A
University don, Dr James Bature has said it was discriminatory to subject candidates in rural areas to computer-based tests for admission into tertiary institutions in the country. Bature, a lecturer at the University of Jos, made the in Kaduna noting that the computer-based evaluation was not in tune with the realities in the country and would place candidates in rural areas at a very high risk due to their disadvantage. The lecturer stressed that the method did not also take into account the level of poverty and lack of modern communication
facilities in rural areas. Bature believes that the test was introduced by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to scheme out the rural populace from accessing tertiary education. According to him, the development will further push the already disadvantaged rural populace to lose interest in education. “These students tried so hard to get the required number of credits for admission into tertiary institutions, and they are now compelled to write JAMB and post-UTME using computer. “Most of these children never saw a computer throughout their
primary and secondary school education, but they are now subjected to compete with other children that use computers as toys,” he said. Bature, therefore, advocated the adoption of diverse approach to admission process to accommodate the rural people. The don also pointed out that the high cost of processing admission in Nigeria would discourage the poor from access to tertiary education. “What is the point when students buy recharge card to register for JAMB, buy recharge card to check results, buy recharge card to register for post UTME?” Bature raised these questions in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Success Corner! President Buhari to youths: Be the change you wish for Text by SIMON E. SUNDAY @SimonEchewofun, LATIFAT OPOOLA, @LatifatOpoola & SIKIRAT SHEHU, ILORIN President Muhammadu Buhari has enjoined Nigerian youths in an event commemorating the 2015 International Youth Day (IYD) to be the change they wish to see. Speaking at the state banquet hall in Abuja, Wednesday he said, “The youth must therefore be vanguards of this change and at the same time be the change that they wish to see.” The President also applauded the efforts of youths towards the success
of the recent general elections saying they have added to creating a model for democratic governance in Africa. The International Youth Day came up through a United Nations Resolution 54/120 of December 19, 1999 to observe August 12 of every year as a day to celebrate and appreciate the contribution of the youth to their various communities. Buhari said the UN Secretary General has since appointed an Envoy on Youth as a clear

participation of young people is necessary in order to accelerate economic growth and sustainable development. Worried about the rising unemployment
rate which the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) puts at 24.20percent just in the first quarter of 2015, Buhari said the unemployment rate among youth is disturbing as it is over 50percent. While he assured that his administration wail create many avenues of youth employment, he said the entrepreneurial intervention funds from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) among others will be improved. charged youth to steer clear of all acts that can destabilise the peace and unity of Nigeria. Adekanye in a statement expressed concern about the involvement of youth in drug abuse and other illicit acts, hence advising them to concentrate more on what they can contribute positively to the development of the country. He said youth should endeavour to utilise the potentials of the ICT to create jobs for themselves, key into entrepreneurship and vocational training to become skilful and self reliant.
