anoply of manufactured technological items, crude they may be, announces 16-year-old Olatimilehin Daomi’s inventive flair. There are, among others, a power bank produced from a mathematical set case tested to charge mobile phones, toilet tissue dispenser produced from a plastic can and wood, mini water pumping machine, a small speed boat, a rat catcher, a small motorcycle that actually moves, a fumigator and what the young creative mind calls an oil exploration machine. Daomi is a second-year senior secondary two (SS2) student of Doobar College, Ikorodu in Lagos state. Interestingly, he is an Art, rather than a Science student. Olatimilehin Daomi, 16, an SS2 student, has produced products and technological items including a power bank and toilet tissue dispenser. Daomi in this interview said with the right exposure and support, he could tell the world what young Nigerians can do. From Dotun Omisakin, Lagos

creative art faculty to a rather scientific ingenuity to produce many items that are in the realm of technology. At his residence in Maya, Ikorodu, where Daily Trust YOUTHVILLE observed his works, Daomi said he produces his “inventions” from local materials he scavenges from waste dumps. He said that besides some bits of knowledge he gathers from science books he reads on inventions and his practical study of how technological products work, he has noted he possesses an uncanny wave of creative ingenuity that he puts to use. “I started working on creating scientific and technological products that actually work through my observation of things around me,”Daomi said. Stressing that producing many technological products in Nigeria does not require importation of the required raw materials, Daomi said Nigeria boasts of things like iron and aluminium materials, wood and plastic waste that can be recycled to produce what the country needs. The young student said he desires to see his brainwave develop into concrete realities. “In developed economies like Japan, the government assists crude talents like mine to blossom. Many of their electronics and car designers come

up through brainwaves like mine and are then polished through the right trainings. “There are many young Nigerians who are creatively gifted to be geniuses in scientific and technological production but, unfortunately, they are not pulled up because of the dislocations in our system,” Daomi lamented. “I need more exposure and enlightenment for the world to see what a Nigerian can do,” he declared. If Daomi is not taking Art subjects in his senior secondary class despite his seeming science bent, it’s because he is, he said, heeding the direction of his barrister father who craves that his children – two sons and a girl follow his law footsteps. That does not deter him, though, from developing his technological instincts, especially if the right encouragement comes, which is what he wishes to do. Daomi’s school proprietor, Pastor Omojola Olujide, said the school was setting the pace for Daomi to come into the limelight by emphasising on entrepreneurial engagements. Mr Olujide stated there is a change in education in Nigeria now which focuses on entrepreneurship, in the face of scarcity of white-collar jobs. Young creative minds like Daomi, he added, should be encouraged to actualise their practical talents so Nigeria can grow technologically.

his debut album “Revival” in Abuja recently, condemned the action of many youths that venture into music in a bid to make money or fame. “Music is naturally to glorify God, if the aim of music is centralised in putting God first then our mentality towards music will change for better,” he

said. Simon said music is also prophetic to him as he was not only gifted but also called into the music ministry by God. “Music is also prophetic and people need to understand that prophecy flows music,” he said. He said the musical album was geared

in Information Communication Technology (ICT) because of its prospects. He noted that he was able to record the feat by studying and playing so many games, saying he is grateful to his parents for the push. Principal of the school, Mr. Rowland Eno said the impact of the award begins to put not only Premiere Academy on the mart in terms of technological development but also Nigeria. ICT according to him is critical in everything as this is the age of technology, saying, these are the initial stages and it can be built on. The school’s Head of Learning and Studies, Mr John Ogungbenro said, “Most of the things we used today, computers mobile phones are done through coding so for a child of premiere to come first in such activities is very important to us as a school and a nation.”

The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) said it will train 9,500 youth in 18 states and Abuja in its fifth phase of the National Industrial Skills Development Programme (NISDP). The agency estimated that 500 youth between age 18 and 35 years would be trained in the selected states. Speaking at briefing, the Acting Director-General, Mr.

Dickson Chinedum said the training is in 38 select trade and craft areas and based on projected values to the states. Skills mismatch hinders youthful enterprise — Expert Text by Abubakar Haruna Skills mismatch has hindered youth from developing entrepreneurial mindset in the country, an expert has said. The Administrative Manager of a NonGovernmental Organisation (NGO), Skills Outside School Foundation, Victor Ogbonnaya, who spoke in an interview in Abuja said proactive measures should be taken to address this challenge. “We discovered that there is skills mismatch with what is being taught in schools

and what is obtainable in the labour market. This is a factor that prevents youth to develop their enterprise skills to achieve their goals.” He explained that young people with professional degrees need to develop an entrepreneurial mindset to enable them apply their knowledge to solve problems peculiar to Nigeria in line with their field. Ogbonnaya said up to 20% youth unemployment constitute graduates of tertiary institutions and that a significant number of them remained unemployed for upward of 5 years.
